Whether you are starting out in your career or just want to improve, you need to earn the trust of your bosses and coworkers.

No matter how much workplaces have changed over the years, there are still some basic guidelines to follow that will help you stand out. These are some of the most important lessons I can offer.

• Arrive on time consistently. Yes, sometimes the traffic is bad or the train runs late. Train yourself to arrive at work within a specific window so people don’t have to guess when you’re coming in – or whether you’re coming in at all.

• Dress appropriately. Take note of how your co-workers dress, and follow their lead. You don’t want to be too formal, but sloppy clothes and poor personal hygiene can mark you as unserious or unprofessional.

• Introduce yourself effectively.

Practice a quick introduction – no more than 30 seconds – so you can make a good first impression on the people you meet. Remember to look people in the eye and give a nice warm handshake.

• Remember names. Make an effort to keep people’s names in your mind.

You’ll impress them and show that you’re paying attention. The best way

is to repeat their names a few times when you first meet to lock the name in your head, or write it down at your first opportunity.

• Stay organized. If you’re scrambling to find things on your desk, or always late for meetings, you’ll look scatter-brained and undependable. Set up a system for tracking information and managing your time so you’re always on top of things.

• Use email professionally. Keep in mind that your email at work belongs to your employer, not to you. Write every email as if it might be read aloud in court. You don’t want a flippant remark or a bad joke coming back to haunt you.

• Share the credit generously.

Collaborate with your co-workers as much as possible, and let your boss and other people know they’ve helped you.

No one wants to work with someone who hogs all the accolades, but people are happy to cooperate with a co-worker who’s generous with the credit for a job well done.

• Talk to your boss. Make time to check in with your manager when you don’t have a problem to report or a question to ask. Don’t monopolize their time, but make contact to offer Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Things Not Done Today A reader stopped at the office last week to share some stories about his family.

He was born and spent his early years in Minneapolis.

Life there was different from life in our rural area. Everybody had electricity, running water, sewers and garbage service. This story is about some of the experiences there and how experiences changed when moving to the rural area.

This fellow’s father had several jobs during the 1930’s. He was a school bus driver and the school was financially strapped, similar to schools today. The school offered bus transportation and with the increasing student count, either more buses were needed or changes needed to be made to their current buses.

They made changes. The solution was to put planks on the bus seats, which reached across the isle. By adding this additional seating capacity, the problem was temporarily solved. When loading students, those who got off the last sat in the rear, the first off sat in the front and as the bus unloaded, the first students removed the planks, so the next group could get off. Evidently safety was not a priority.

His father had strict rules regarding student noise and behavior. One afternoon the kids were especially noisy and boisterous. They were warned twice and when the third warning was

administered, the kids were ordered off the bus and left by the side of the road.

The students found themselves in an undeveloped area several miles north of town. Parents complained, but the principal congratulated the bus driver, because when the story spread among the students, they were more careful to follow the bus driver’s rules on all of the buses. Maybe that is why all students today are so well behaved.

Garbage collection in the Minneapolis area was somewhat different from today. First, the garbage was different. Plastic didn’t exist, which makes up a lot of today’s garbage.

Most homes burned the paper products, leaving wet items and “tin cans” as the primary garbage items. The garbage collectors were paid by the pound of delivered garbage at the dump. The loads of garbage were frequently watered down before delivery to the dump, there-by increasing the pounds.

A relative of the reader purchased a small island in north-central Minn.

It was heavily covered with brush and weeds. He decided that if he placed sheep and goats on the island, they would eat the brush and weeds. The animals were taken to the island in spring and removed again in fall. After a couple of years, he decided that making a bridge to the island would be easier than moving the livestock by boat. This idea worked well, except that the animals frequently went across the bridge to the mainland and snacked on garden vegetables and decorative yard plants. It seemed that the mainland treats were better than the island offered, so the animals became a problem. The animals were sold, as was the island, both at a good profit.

After moving to the rural area, one of the reader’s remembrances was seeing his father putting small pigs and calves in the back of the car to take them to and from market. Mother was not happy about the situation and insisted that he go buy another car, which was used only for animal transportation. I guess having kids dressed for Sunday Services and

sitting in the livestock moving area of the car was not acceptable.

a suggestion about a project or ask for feedback. Let the boss know you are interested and eager.

• Volunteer. Don’t wait for your manager to ask you about joining a committee or task force. Jump at the opportunity to be in contact with colleagues outside your department and build your image throughout the organization.

• Go above and beyond. If you really want to impress people, accept responsibility that others might have backed away from or didn’t want.

Never pass up an opportunity to show your willingness to learn and work hard.

There will always be a place for the person who says, “I’ll take care of it.”

And then does it.

• Don’t give up. Stick with your projects and get them finished, preferably on time. Show your managers that they can rely on you to keep your commitments.

• Network. Get to know the most talented people in your organization regardless of their titles. Don’t ask them for help – rather, offer to help them when you can. That builds positive relationships and earns you a reputation as someone who puts the organization’s objectives first.

• Keep learning. I’m an advocate

for lifelong learning, and I strongly encourage people to keep their brains fresh by learning both on and off the job.

Be curious. Delve into subjects that will make you a more valuable employee.

Someone once asked Michelangelo at age 88 when he was going to retire? He answered, “Whenever I stop learning.”

These are habits you will use for life, no matter what job or title you hold.

Good workplace etiquette will never go out of style.

Obituaries Allan Edward Beilke

Allan Edward Beilke, age 77 of Grey Eagle died Monday, January 21, 2019 at the St. Cloud Hospital of heart failure after experiencing numerous health challenges over the past several years. Allan’s wish was that his body be donated to the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program in hopes that his experience with complex medical issues could help aid in research. Allan did not want to have a traditional funeral. In place of this, friends and family will gather informally on Sunday, February 24 from 2:30 p.m.

Audrey L. Benson Allan was born in Bertha, MN to Mabelle (Picker) and Edward Beilke.

Allan is survived by children: Sarah Beilke, Karl Beilke, and Karen Beilke.

Allan is also survived by Sarah’s daughters Ava and Ameile. Allan also leaves behind many special friends who have helped him in so many ways.

Allan enjoyed fishing and he loved going up to the “Sheep Ranch” deer hunting when he was able. Allan was eager to teach his granddaughters how to fish and although it was difficult for him with his health, he managed to get “the girls” as he always called them out fishing a few times.

Our dad also loved to watch drag racing and taking drives in the country on Sunday afternoons. He was an avid motorcycle rider and loved going to Sturgis. Allan enjoyed going to hear live country music, going to the casino, and poking around at auctions to see if he could find any good deals. One of our dad’s proudest accomplishments was building our family’s cabin from the ground up and teaching us how to build alongside him.

Allan honorable served in the U.S. Army. Professionally, Allan’s career focused around banking, business, and finance. He was active in the Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in the Veteran’s memorial integration in Grey Eagle.

Allan will be remembered by those who loved him as a loving father, and adoring grandfather, a good friend, an outdoors man, and as a man who cared a lot about his community.

A u d r e y Louise Benson, age 88 died peacefully on January 31, 2019 surrounded by her family. She is now joined in eternal love with her husband, Gene Benson who died last May. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be held later at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Audrey was born February 10, 1930 to Gladys (Tallman) and Olaf Hippe in Minneapolis, MN. She married her childhood neighbor Gene Benson on July 1, 1949 after he returned from World War II. They settled in Richfield, MN where they lived for 40 years raising their 3 children.

Audrey loved shopping, baking, quilting, gardening and traveling with Gene. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. After raising her

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of James J. Czech, age 90 of Holdingford was held Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at All Saints, St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Holdingford, burial was in the parish cemetery.

Jim died January 30 at the V.A. Medical Center in St Cloud, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born on November 19, 1928

She worked as a counselor in Golden Valley for several years before retiring to their lake home on Mound Lake in Burtrum, MN. She enjoyed the sunshine and winters in Lake Havasu City, AZ with Gene, after they retired.

Audrey will be remembered for her classy sense of style and wit, as well as her baked treats she shared with many in the community, offering cheer and support to those around her.

Audrey was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years David “Gene” Benson, her parents and dear brother Eugene “Hip” Hippe.

She is survived by her 3 children: Michelle (Chip) Cox, Paul (Tammy) Benson, and Missy (Greg) Wokasch. She had seven grandchildren Derek (Kelli) Cox, Jacob Cox, Eric Benson, Angie (Tanner) Ellenberg, Cory Wokasch, Ryan Wokasch and Austin Wokasch. Three greatgrandchildren: Jordan Cox, Kennedy Cox, and Benson Ellenberg. Four nieces and nephew: Nancy (Bill) Noon, Barb (Dan) Opitz, Sarah Larson, Brad Hippe.

The family requests donations to the American Lung Association.

Arrangements are with the Miller Carlin Funeral Home. in rural Holdingford, MN to Peter and Mary (Trutwin) Czech. He lived and farmed in the Holdingford area all his life except when he served in the U.S. Marines from 1951 to 1954. He never married. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwigs and the Holdingford American Legion.

James is survived by two of his sisters: Teckla Scegura of Avon and Marcella (Ed) Hiemenz of St. Augusta; brother-in-laws, Mark Kociemba and Edward Hiemenz, and many nieces and nephews.

Gilbert J. Klaphake

Gilbert J. Klaphake, age 86 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, February 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba, Rev. Ken Thielman, and Rev. Mark Willenbring concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Gilbert Joseph Klaphake was born April 17, 1932 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Alphonse and Rose (Thieschafer) Klaphake. He married Marcella “Sally” Uphoff on September 14, 1954 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. Gilbert farmed all his life. From dairy farming, to turkey farming, to working at the Feed Mill until his retirement. After his retirement, Gilbert would make frequent visits back to the Feed Mill. He loved playing cards, fishing, golfing, going to the cabin, listening to music, and doing puzzles. Gilbert also spent time visiting with people and keeping them company. Above anything else, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids.

Gilbert was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Knights of Columbus, and Minnesota Turkey Growers Association. Over the years he spent a lot of time being a member on numerous boards.

Dolores M. “Lori” Tamm, age 89 of Albany, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

Dolores Monica Van Heel was born October 14, 1929 in Freeport, Minnesota to Peter and Katherine (Notch) Van Heel.

Lori completed school through the eighth grade, electing to stay at home to take care of her ailing mother. On June 10, 1950 she was united in marriage to Ervin Tamm at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony.

The couple moved to the family farm where they raised their family. This is where she honed her skills of cooking, baking, and gardening, and will be remembered for saying, “Just eat what you can!”

While her husband was in the nursing home, Lori earned her G.E.D. which she was very proud of. She worked at the

What is a miracle? And who decides what a miracle is? Is there some special committee that looks at various events in history and classifies them as being a miracle or an ordinary event? Or can two people look at the same event and one say, “This is indeed a miracle!” and the other say, “Nothing amazing here. It just happened to end up this way. That’s the way life works.”

Our Psalmist looked around and said, “You are the God who performs miracles; You display Your powers among the peoples.”

There is a beautiful theme in this Psalm. In the first several verses the writer seems to be having a difficult time seeing God. Then, suddenly, God’s Spirit jarred his thinking and brought God’s grace to his attention. When he finally puts things into context, he recalled that it was God who controls everything and it was his God who was the One who parted the waters and led the Israelites to safety. Those who were drown and destroyed by the “mighty waters” could not see their “misfortune” as God performing a miracle. But those whom He saved did!

And so it is today. Those who have been redeemed by the love, mercy and grace of God see His miracles in their lives every day. When we pray, He answers. If we become sick, He heals.

When we need forgiveness, He alone can remove our guilt. When others abandon us, He is a friend who stands beside us. When we grieve, He comforts us. When we are stressed, He calms our heart. When we have nothing, He meets our needs. Our God performs miracles.

Dear Motor Medics, We have a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe and when it was just a year old, we got a new puppy. The first time we left it alone while we went inside a restaurant to eat, she decided to eat the Tahoe. She chewed the back of the rear seat and the corner off of the plastic trim too. The vehicle is in great shape with 70,000 miles and we want to sell it, but with a large hole in the seat and the damage to the plastic side trim it’s making the sale very difficult. We checked with the dealer and they are telling us they can repair it at a cost of over $3500.00 parts and labor and our insurance will not cover repairs. Can you suggest anything that we can do in the way of a repair to save some money?

What’s wrong with a seat and trim from another Tahoe of the same year that has no damage? Look into certified used parts. Ask your dealer if they can find these parts so you can get a repair that makes more financial sense. With the hundreds of reliable used parts sources in the country they should be able to find a match for a late model vehicle like yours and make the repair affordable. There is always a way.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, We have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe that has been having the check brake light come on periodically. The fluid tank slowly drains so we fill the brake

fluid and it works fine for a while then comes on again. We had a mechanic look at it and tell us we would have to replace the HCU in the brake system and that the part alone is about $1600.00. Is this a common problem and does this sound reasonable? Is there anything else we can do? I’m a little hesitant to spend so much on a repair on a 10-yearold vehicle, when the value is maybe a little more than twice the cost to repair the problem.

-Kay in Nebraska Dear Kay, The HCU is the Hydraulic Control Unit and it’s the main component of the antilock brake system. The units don’t tend to leak fluid but rather fail electrically so I would take a very close look at the lines going to the unit which are more common to fail. Shop around for brakes. A second opinion never hurts if you have any question and by asking us, we assume that you do. When you have an older vehicle or any vehicle for that matter it is important to keep repairs economical but it’s also important to be safe. Brakes are not an area to cut corners on but there are always ways to save money when repairing them.

Upsala City February 4, 2019 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Lana Bartells, and Dennis Westrich, Crystal Benson, and Brian Lange.

People present:vFirst Response Members Garrett Doucette and Seth Strassburg, Reva VanVleet with CEDA, MC Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Public Works Frank Koopmeiners, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from January 7 City Council Meeting, 2nd by westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to approve minutes from January 7 City Special Closed Council Meeting, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Economic Development: Reva VanVleet with CEDA reported on the grants for the City park.

Bartells moved to approve applying to the MN State Arts Board Festival Grant to put a mural on the south side of the Community Center, 2nd Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

The Council directed Reva to look into more grants for the arts in the community.

Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

Koopmeiners also explained the proposal from Minnesota Rural Water for GPS Data Collection/ GIS Mapping.

They would map all the water mains and sewer mains and GPS the valves and curb stops, etc. This would also be put on a vinyl map. The cost for this would be $6,000; SouceWell stated they would pay for half the cost. The total cost for the City would be approximately $3,000.00.

Benson moved to approve the proposal from Minnesota Rural Water to do the GPS Data Collection / GIS Mapping, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Paul Hoeschen from Minnesota Rural Water is doing a energy audit on the water plant to help with conservation.

Fire Department Report: Training in January on extrication. The regular meeting is postponed to this Wednesday due to the weather.

Rescue Squad: Report was submitted. The car extrication training on January 26 at the fire hall with the Fire Department was successful. They will also have a refresher course coming up.

Lisa (George) resigned in January.

Lange moved to approve the First Response Team Bylaws/Handbook as presented,

2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the February Calendar.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commissioners presented a proposed Inflow and Infiltration Ordinance to the Council including a proposed Inspection Sheet. Mayor Johnson suggested that the newsletter should go out with information on Inflow and Infiltration before the Council holds a public hearing on the approving the Ordinance.

Benson stated that we need to be judicious on how we are going to go about finding out the specific information from each household.

UCDC: Bartell reported that the board has new people who would like to join. Bartells made a motion to approve Crystal Benson, Don Trettel, and Cindy Kuepers as new members, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to separate the financials for Heritage days from the City and directed Stevens to write a check to the Upsala Heritage Days Committee once their account has been established, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Recreation Board: The January minutes from the Rec Board meeting were presented.

New Business: St. Mary’s Gambling Permit: Lange moved to approve the Gambling Permit for St. Mary’s raffle on April 12 of this year with no waiting period, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Lion’s Donation – Resolution 2-4-19-1 Lange moved to approve resolution 2-4-19-1 a resolution approving a $360 donation from the Upsala Lions to the Upsala First Response Team from, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Resolutions to move money into the appropriate accounts Bartells moved to approve Resolution 2-4-19-2 a resolution to move money from the Walnut Ave. Project to the Walnut Debt Service Fund, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to approve Resolution 2-4-19-3 a resolution to move money from the Street Reconstruction Project to the Street Reconstruction Debt Service Fund, 2nd by Lange.

Motion carried unanimously.

Westrich moved to approve Resolution 2-4-19-4 a resolution to move money from the Maintenance Buidling Project to the Maintenance Building Debt Service Fund, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

GASB Reporting:Stevens explained the State’s reporting requirements on the GASB 68 & GASB 71. She also shared with the Council that the Firemen’s Relief Association has agreed to look into changing their retirement program to PERA; and that if they choose not to convert to PERA, they will pay for the costs of the actuary reports that the state requires.

Online Payments for Utility Bills: Stevens asked the Council if it would be prudent to look into online payments for the residents to pay their City utility bills. The Council directed Stevens to put a survey in the newsletter.

Acknowledgements: To Joan Olson for continuing to work with Michelle and coding the bills. It is prudent to have a second pair of eyes on the accounts. Even though you are not a councilmember this year, you still are willing to volunteer your time and talent to the City.

Financials: Lange moved to approve the bills as presented, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Next Regular City Council Meeting will be March 4 at 7:00 pm.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jim Molitor. Also present: Jeremy Boots, Abbie Bryce, and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, December 4, 2018 were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Jeremy Boots, representing Moore Engineering, was present to discuss with council projects which should be included on the city’s capital improvement plan.

Mayor Lange presented the Morrison County Animal Humane Society Agreement.

After discussion, council was in agreement to not sign the agreement and to pay for services as needed.

Liquor License fees were discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to raise the yearly liquor license to: Off Sale: $150.00, On Sale: $2000.00, Sunday License: $250.00 and 2:00 am closing fee: $100.00 for a total of $2500.00. Red’s Irish Pub liquor license needs to be renewed and paper work needs to be completed

Jon William Noreen

A memorial service for Jon Noreen will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 9, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany.

A visitation will take place at 1:00 PM until the time of service.

A Celebration of Life at Shady’s reception hall will follow the service. Jon died unexpectedly at his home on Friday.

Jon was born October 18, 1951 in St. Paul to Clarence “KY” and Darlene (Sherburn) Noreen. He graduated from Edina High school and attended Mankato State University and earned a degree in Education. He married Lynette Kretchman on July 31, 1982 in Bloomington. He taught and coached football and basketball at the Elgin-Millville High School before moving to Albany in 1987, where he taught Fine Arts and coached the Girls Basketball Team. He was the head coach for the Albany Girls Basketball Team for 26 years where he had a record of 476-186. He led his teams to 15 west central Conference Championships, 11 sub-section Championships, four section Runner-ups and seven State

Tournament appearances, winning the state championship in 2008. During his 32 years of coaching basketball, he’s been named MGBCA Section Coach of the Year three times. During the summers, Jon would travel to Australia with boys and girls basketball players to play in an international basketball tournament. Jon’s teams won the Down Under hoops Classic three times in the 12 years of going to Australia. In 2010, Jon was inducted into the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Jon retired from Albany in 2011 then returned for another year of teaching. In 2016, he was named the Head Girls Basketball Coach at St. Cloud Technical and Community College. Jon bred and trained labrador retrievers and he owned “Gunnars Kennel” in Avon. Jon was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time with his family, especially his growing number of grandchildren. Jon was excited to spend the summers fishing and boating with the grandchildren and watching them grow.

Jon is survived by his wife, Lynette, Avon; his children; Jake (Carly) Noreen, Hampstead, NC; Darby Noreen, Willmar: Joanne (Tony) Thomason, Peoria, IL; Seth Noreen, Minneapolis; Jennie (Steven) Helget, Mankato; Zach (Tatum) Noreen, Albany; 10 grandchildren and his sister, Karen (Dan) Carlson, Bloomington.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jana Lynn Noreen.

The Swanville City Park Rent was discussed.

After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to have the fee to rent the park building set at $125.00 for all occasions. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

2019 Local Boards of Appeal and Equalization is set for Thursday, April 11,2019 at 9:00 am.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 7:00 pm.

Historic cold snap made its mark; state permitting process hampers economic growth

Last week’s weather certainly reinforced the notion that it can change quickly in Minnesota.

Temps well below zero as late as Thursday gave way to relatively balmy conditions over the weekend that saw highs in the 30s. After experiencing the brutal conditions, especially those on Tuesday and Wednesday, it almost seemed spring-like when the winds died down and the mercury poked above zero.

I can’t ever recall a more wicked combination of cold temps and high winds, conditions that led to near-record breaking wind chills. At 7 a.m. on Jan. 30, Melrose had the distinction of the lowest temp in the area with a -38 degree reading. The night before, Alexandria experienced the lowest wind chill at -63, with Benson right behind at -62. I had to come home that evening to check on water pipes in our farm house.

The drive home after dark was challenging, especially the stretch between Sauk Centre and Glenwood. Visibility on the freeway coming home was OK, but it was a totally different story on Highway 28. Near white-out conditions at times, coupled with rock-hard drifts across the road, made for some slow going.

I started to count the stranded rigs along the freeway. The number reached 11 by the time I got to the St. Cloud

area. Couldn’t imagine a worse job than lifting the hood on a truck that night or simply hooking up and pulling it to a heated shop. Visited with a trucker in Sauk Centre who had counted 30 stalled rigs and vehicles on his way from Fargo!

Heard a weather man on the radio explain that the method used to figure wind chill was changed in the year 2002.

And had we used the chart in effect back then to figure wind chill this past week, the numbers would have been approaching -90!

I’ve long maintained that our state needs to be competitive with our neighboring states in terms of tax policy and business regulation. We recently saw another example of how that’s not the case when a company headquartered in Marshall, called TruShrimp, announced it was moving its first shrimp-growing facility from Luverne, Minn., to Madison, S.D. One of the main reasons given was the inability to come to agreement with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency on a water quality regulation dealing with the “specific conductance” of its discharge water. The regulation doesn’t deal directly with the amount of salt in the water, but with how quickly an electric current passes through water.

The University of Minnesota, back in 2010, came out with a finding that the MPCA wasn’t applying the test correctly. Some would even say that the test is not relevant. But because the company and the MPCA, after nearly two years, couldn’t come to agreement over this test, TruShrimp said they could wait no longer and announced the move to

Keeping walkways clear

By United States Postal Service Now that Polar Vortex Jayden has moved on and we are headed for a brief warm up, we need our customers’ help.

Postal carriers have suffered serious injuries related to slips, trips and falls due to icy and snow covered walkways and porch steps. Preventing a slip or bad fall can be as easy as putting down salt or sand on slippery surfaces or clearing the way to mailboxes.

Please take this opportunity to re-

move all snow and ice from walkways, sidewalks, steps, porches and around curbline boxes. Clearing snow at least six feet on both sides of curbline mailboxes allows carriers to approach and leave without backing up their vehicles.

February 2019 Teen Dating Awareness Month

By Connie Nelson, Hands of Hope Resource Center As I write another letter to the editor about violence, I shudder, and ask “when will it ever end, when will people treat others with respect, and when will we all learn to live together without violence?”

As parents, we attempt to shelter our children from it, but it seems that violence is being used more and more as a way to solve issues, no matter the age.

Some teenagers are using violence in school, in dating relationships and often times at home to deal with their feelings.

Why are young couples dealing with issues like dating violence and sexual assault, when they should be enjoying their middle and high school years free of those worries?

As adults in the 21st century, we realize that dating violence and sexual assault happens in rural Minnesota. The media is talking about it every day, or we can go on social web sites and read about it.

Unfortunate as it is, some teens and parents have to deal with it on a much more personal level, as it has or is happening to their teenage son or daughter. The fact

of the matter is that dating or sexual violence effects one in three young people, and I say young because those stats are for an age group of 11 to 17.

Nationwide, 1.5 million teenagers report experiencing some kind of abuse at the hands of a dating partner each year, and two thirds of all parents are never told what is happening. That isn’t shocking, but it is concerning.

So are there signs to look for in your teen that maybe their dating relationship isn’t ok. Yes. One sign is extreme mood swings, and yes that can be a common occurrence with a teenager, but there may be an increased more intense level of mood changes.

Secondly, does your teen seem withdrawn or even anti-social for no apparent reason or show signs of isolation, does the partner seem to take up more and more time. Third, are you seeing any unexplainable bruising or marks? Victims often times will attempt to hide marks with makeup or clothing. Fourth, grades and school performance usually suffers, due to the trauma in the relationship. Last but not least is sexual behavior. Many younger teens are just not mature enough to be having sex, but it may be forced on them in an abusive relationship and used to control them.

There is help for both victims and parents? There are several very good websites that both parents and teens can access for information, such as Love is Respect, No More, Lets Be Real, and Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women, just to name a few informational resources online. Hands of Hope Resource Center in Long Prairie is also a FREE confidential, caring, and anonymous {if you choose} resource for information on Teen Dating Violence. For this February 2019 Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, my wish for all teens is safe, caring and RESPECTFUL relationships and communication with someone if it doesn’t feel that way to you.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Before You Were Born: Jeremiah 1:410, 17-19 Jeremiah the prophet was special. Jeremiah was worried that his age would hinder his calling to preach God’s Word but God was not concerned. To God time is less relative than we tend to think. God’s opening words to Jeremiah are a pre-argument to Jeremiah’s concerns that he hasn’t been around long enough to be an effective prophet. In God’s view he was chosen to be a prophet before God even formed him in the womb, before he was even born.

Which one matters more? God’s view or ours?

Like Jeremiah most pastors have doubts at some time whether preaching God’s Word is their true calling. Our society has done a great job of convincing people that they could be and do anything over the last 50-60 years or more.

Many people apply their God given abilities towards the goal of reaching their full potential instead of doing what God created them for and called them to do. Some stumble in and out of church as they go along thinking religion might be the key they need for the next level.

When God doesn’t open the next door for them they leave again at least until the next crisis.

What people are seeking is their God given purposes. Before we were born, before God even formed us in the womb God had a purpose for us. Prophets and pastors like Jeremiah need extra encouragement because they fight a spiritual battle against kings, their officials, their priests, and their people. (Jer 1:18) I know that I have been called to preach God’s Word because even in the face of all of life’s challenges (and I have had my share) I find nothing more comforting than God’s Word. Knowing that God had a purpose for me before I was born is comforting but to know that each and every day he gives me the knowledge and the assurance through faith that he has my eternal well being taken care of is even more comforting.

God will deliver us from this fallen creation in Jesus. That is sealed for us in our baptism for eternity. That does not change.

So what does God have planned for you? Don’t let your youth or your lack of it make you think that God doesn’t have something important still planned for you. What has he got planned for this year, next year, 5 years or even 10, 20 or 40 years? Jeremiah had no idea the turmoil he would help see the people of God through. Maybe that is why God started him so young, so he could help for longer.

This was a refining time for God’s people and if he wanted them to survive, they needed spiritual care. Last week we saw the people returning from captivity to rebuild the wall and temple.

Esther’s time was a moment during that captivity that delivered God’s people from what could have been total destruction. God’s plan for you might not be that grand but when angels rejoice in heaven when people come to believe in Jesus our work here in God’s church, at home, in our families, or at work is as grand as I care to get. As long as we stay focused on bringing the knowledge of truth to those around us through our words and deeds in this time and place that God has given us I believe we are doing what God planned for us before we were born. Amen.
