Move on from mistakes -By Harvey Mackay T h e Minnesota Vikings were playing the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2020 NFL playoffs when wide receiver Adam Thielen made a crucial mistake on the team’s opening possession.

He fumbled and the Saints were able to kick a field goal off the turnover.

Shortly after his fumble, Thielen was caught making a motion with his hand like he was flushing a toilet. Turns out he was implementing a “mistake ritual” called ‘the flush.” Dr. Cindra Kamphoff, a mental performance coach, taught this drill to Thielen and his college teammates, and it has served him well.

He went on to have a big day and made the crucial catch to set up the Vikings’ winning touchdown in overtime.

The majority of us aren’t judged by our mistakes on national TV. Pro athletes, entertainers, restaurant owners, college professors, politicians – anyone who is out in the public eye has to live with scrutiny and negative reviews on social media and hope for the best. A little mistake looks a lot bigger when broadcast all over the country. Maybe it’s not always fair, but it’s the world we live in.

We can’t change the past. We have to learn from your mistakes and move forward. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s how we handle them that sets us apart.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Booze Recently, public television had a program about making alcohol in our area about 90 years ago. A book has been published about Minnesota 13, also giving interesting facts and stories about Minnesota bootlegging.

I found both of these stories very interesting.

My interest is due to the really positive economic impact alcohol production had on the agricultural community. During the depression, the value of animals and grain was so low, that those who lived through those years felt that although the farm offered an adequate diet for it’s residents, there was a great need for cash money. The farmer couldn’t offer their farm grain or animals to the Bank to satisfy their mortgage payment. They needed cash to buy petroleum products for the farm. They needed cash for the doctor, druggist, vet or the church. The farm products just couldn’t adequately cover these cash needs.

The immigrants to Minnesota brought with them not only the ability to operate a farm, but there were also some “old country” skills, which they

found useful. These immigrants were convinced that they would be a success in their new businesses and the economic conditions were not in their favor. Faced with a need for cash, they decided that there was an opportunity to solve some of their problems by expanding their operations. They had or could produce most of the materials needed to make alcohol except sugar. The equipment needed was either currently owned or easily obtained from a neighbor.

The location of the still varied from a spot in the basement for a small operation to several large commercial stills. There was a demand which needed to be supplied and they made a way to get it done.

Moving the alcohol to the market varied from a couple of jugs under the hay on the back of the wagon to a storage spot in a railroad car. My Fatherin-Law had two floors in his cattle hauling truck. The top floor was for the cattle and the bottom floor was about 10 inches below the upper floor, just high enough to accommodate quart jars of alcohol. He had one primary supplier and several smaller producers to help fill the load. At that time the cost of hauling cattle to the market usually was equal to the value of the stock being hauled. The additional revenue was needed.

My Grandmother made really good beer. Some customers drove the team 7 miles to enjoy the product. It was possible to be aware of her operation, since occasionally the newly filled bottles would explode leaving an old beer smell in the house.

How many individuals felt that they were able to get medical help because they had a few extra bucks to afford it. How many extra jobs were created because a business had the cash to hire needed help. In a cash-starved environment this couple of extra bucks were welcome.

Why did it go wrong? Maybe your process was flawed, or you had bad information, or you made incorrect assumptions. Ask the people around you for their perceptions. When you know why things went wrong, you’ll be better able to avoid mistakes when you get back to work.

Are you repeating mistakes? Make sure you’re not making the same mistakes over and over again. Look at past failures to determine whether your process is flawed in some way. As Winston Churchill said, “If you simply take up the attitude of defending a mistake, there will be no hope of improvement.”

What can you salvage? Take a look at the end result and see if you can find something useful to recycle – data, equipment, product components, whatever. Your project won’t be a complete loss if you can repurpose at least some of its elements.

Watson Sr., the founder of IBM, said of mistakes: “Double your rate of failure … Failure is a teacher – a harsh one, perhaps, but the best … That’s what I have to do when an idea backfires or a sales program fails. You’ve got to put failure to work for you … you can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes.

Make all you can. Because that’s where you will find success. On the far side of failure.”

Prohibition came to an end when the government figured out how to control the liquor industry. Rules were created to charge the manufacturers and distributors. Federal and state governments created a formula to tax the product. It seems that if it is taxed appropriately, it suddenly became OK. Some stills exist around the area.

Some facilities and recipes have not gone away. Minnesota 13 is still available

through private sources and it still is probably effective to relieve colds and sore throats when mixed with honey.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

By Connie Nelson February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, an initiative spearheaded by teens across the nation to take a stand against dating violence. In 2005 the initiative received national attention when it was added to the Violence Against Women Act, and in 2006 the first week of February was recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week, which has since been enhanced

by Congress to include the whole month of February.

What is this all about? One in three teens between the ages of 11 and 19 report that they have been or are in an abusive relationship, and parents are rarely told about the abuse. The dawning of the social media age has added a whole new avenue of concerns, more specifically with sexual abuse. Abuse doesn’t always leave visible marks, it can be verbal, emotional, financial or sexual, but can be just as devastating as a black and blue mark or a broken bone. As parents, teachers, grandparents and mentors, it is our duty to display healthy relationships. Unconditional love, respect and kindness are a lesson for a lifetime.

Be a good dating partner. Be kind, caring, considerate of others’ feelings, and respectful of your partners boundaries and right to be an individual. Be a good communicator and compromiser, it’s really not hard. The reward is a loving, safe and peaceful co-existence with each other, resulting in a positive dating

Partners should be able to go out with friends, to have their privacy, their own likes and dislikes, spend their time the way they choose. They should not have to share passwords to online accounts or phones, nor share texts, voicemails or FB posts. Lastly, your partner should NEVER hit or slap you or force you to have sex or do sexual things that you don’t want to do. NO means NO! If any of these things are happening in your relationship, you should tell someone, a trusted adult, parent, or teacher, counselor at school, or perhaps your minister. Let someone know before it gets dangerous.

Obituaries Clarence J. “Shorty” Gerads Clarence J. “Shorty” Gerads, age 90, passed away peacefully February 1, 2020 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Private Family memorial service was held We d n e s d a y, February 5 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating.

Inurnment was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Melrose. Military honors were by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Clarence John Gerads was born January 27, 1930 in Krain Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to William H. and Erma (Bueckers) Gerads. He served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1951. On April 22, 1952 he married Alvina Evens at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose.

He was employed at Stearns Electric in Melrose for 37 years and then at Leadstone in Melrose for 25 years.

Shorty was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose American

Legion Post 101, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. During his VFW career, he was Commander for 5 years, VFW District Commander, and Quarter Master. He enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, and reading.

Survivors include his wife, Alvina Gerads of Melrose; children, Judy (Lonnie) Waldvogel of Melrose, Glen (Joan) Gerads of Maple Grove, and Scott (Allison) Gerads of Champlin; seven grandchildren, Dawn, Shawn, Ally, Carly, Maya, Max, and Avery; seven great-grandchildren, Logan, Dawson, Hailey, Audrey, Mason, Brody, and Blake; sisters and brothers, Mildred (Raymond) Pohlmann, Frances (Alvin) Van Heel, Victor (Mary) Gerads, Louise (Alcuin) Goebel, Christine Wuebkers, William T. (Ursula) Gerads, Roderick (Irene) Gerads, Beatrice (Celestine) Massmann, Joan (James) Brickweg, and Linda (David) Wegleitner.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Erma Gerads; son, John Gerads; sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Gerads; and brother-in-law, Clarence Wuebkers.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Suspicious package located in Freeport: February 1, 2020: Stearns County Deputies responded to a suspicious item on Saturday evening at 104 1st Avenue South in Freeport. The business’ employee located a package wrapped in duct tape. Deputies examined the package and observed components in the package consistent with an explosive device. The items themselves were not of danger, but the fact the components were contained together and wrapped in an unconventional method elevated the concern.

The Minneapolis Police Department bomb squad was contacted as a precautionary measure. They took x-rays of the package and determined the package was safe.

Valentine’s Day

Bernice M. Welle, age 81 of Spring Hill, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 7 at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Christian Women will pray at 5 p.m. followed by the parish prayers at 7 p.m.

Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Bernice Marie Stalberger was born March 23, 1938 in Lake George Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Math and Elizabeth (Haider) Stalberger. She was united in marriage to James Welle on September 2, 1957 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. Jim and Bernice farmed in Spring Hill until retiring in 1991.

During retirement, Bernice enjoyed going to the casino, baking, cooking, gardening, and embroidering.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael’s Christian Women, and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 0612 of Lake Henry.

Survivors include her children, Sharon (Jim) Schoenberg, Tom (Michelle) Welle, Jim Jr “Chico”(Kathy) Welle, Pat (Barb) Welle, Tina (Pete) Luke, Lisa (Darryl) Kohout, and Pete (Katie) Welle; 19 grandchildren, Amy Orbeck, Lynn (John) Stommes, Mike (Jaquelyn) Schoenberg, Adam (Erica) Welle, Teigen Welle, Addisyn Welle, Kurt (Tia) Welle, Travis Welle (Daisha), Derek Welle, Weston Brinkman, MaKayla Luke, Matthew Luke, Rachel (Tom) Luong,

Lawrence Rahn

Lawrence Rahn, 94-yearold resident of Burtrum, MN passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020 at the Little Falls Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A funeral service was held Monday, February 3, 2020 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial was in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Lawrence Gust Adolph Rahn was born on October 11, 1925 in Swanville, Minnesota to the late Carl and Theska (Mueller) Rahn.

He was baptized on November 1st, 1925 and confirmed on March 7th, 1943. He entered into service on March 3rd, 1945, and served with the 511th Parachute Infantry in Japan, and was honorably discharged on November 25th, 1946. Lawrence was united in marriage to June Williams on September 2nd, 1951 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, Minnesota. The couple made their home in

Pillsbury, Minnesota. In 1954, the couple purchased their farm south of Burtrum, where they raised their children, and lived there for 65 years. Lawrence also owned and operated a milk truck for Swanville Creamery for 17 years, and drove bus from 1963-2002 for Burtrum-Grey Eagle School Districts. During their retirement, Lawrence and June spent 20 plus years wintering in Weslaco, Texas with many friends.

Lawrence was a member of the Swanville Legion Club, VFW in Melrose, MN, and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. He enjoyed gardening, cutting wood, woodworking, fishing, dancing, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Lawrence is survived by wife June Rahn of Burtrum, MN; children, Wayne (Janice) Rahn of Burtrum, MN; Pamela (Randy) Block of Hillman, MN; brother, Reuben (Lonnie) Rahn of Long Prairie, MN; sisters-in-law, Ruth Rahn of Long Prairie, MN and Beatrice Rahn of Long Prairie, MN; grandchildren, Elisha Graves, Melissa Hanson, Bethany Rahn, Terrance Rahn, Jason Rahn, Justin Rahn, Kari Block, Stacy Monson; and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Theska Rahn; son, Dale; In-laws, Ted and Ruth Williams; brothers, Lloyd and Melvin; and sister-in-law, Beverly Anderson.

Marcella “Marcie” Selinski

Marcella “ M a r c i e ” Selinski, 90 year old resident of Royalton, MN died Saturday, February 1 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, February 5 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN. Burial was held in the parish cemetery.

Marcella Kroll was born on July 11, 1929 in Bowlus, MN to the late Anton (Pauline Schelonka) Kroll. She grew up in the Bowlus area as a young girl. She attended Holdingford High School. After high school she attended St. Cloud State University for one year. Marcie taught elementary school for one year in Lastrup, MN. Marcie Kroll was united in marriage to James Selinski on April 26, 1952 in Minneapolis, MN. The couple made their home for a short time on what is now the Morrison County Landfill. The couple were blessed with seven children. They moved to the Selinski family farm near Bowlus, MN until their retirement. After the death of her husband, James in 2002. Marcie

continued living on the home place with her son, Arnold until she moved to St. Otto’s home two years ago. Her greatest love was spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and was active with the following groups: St. Isabelle’s Mission Group, St. Stanislaus Rosary Society and participated in the Eucharistic Adoration. Marcie enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening, flowers and crocheting. She would take her crafts to many craft shows for over thirty years.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Sharon (Tom) Kloss of Royalton, MN, Kathy (Ed) Popp of Rice, MN, Arnold Selinski of Bowlus, MN, Lou Selinski of Rice, MN, Cindy Selinski of Sauk Rapids, MN, Linda (Andy) Langner of Holdingford, MN and Steve Selinski of Bowlus, MN; grandchildren, Michelle Curtiss, Heidi Quinlan, Michael Kloss, Sara Wolf, Carrie Goebel, Craig Popp, Amanda Hoheisel, Eddy Popp, Jenny Langner, Stacey Langner, Jacob Langner and 15 great-grandchildren and one on the way and a sister, Ellie Mankowski.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James “Boobie” Selinski; siblings, Bill, Al, Leo, Rose, Helen and Mary.

Kenneth “Ken” Heisick

The Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth “Ken” Heisick will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 6 at St. Edwards Catholic church in Elmdale.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Ken passed away Thursday, January 30 at his home in Two Rivers Township surrounded by his loving family. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM Thursday at the church in Elmdale. Arrangements are made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Ken was born January 14, 1932 at home in Morrison County to Matthew and Anna (Rudie) Heisick. He married Helen Atkinson on July 16, 1951 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale. The couple farmed SATURDAYS:

Ken was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, gardening and playing cards. Ken was happiest when spending time with his family.

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the January Senior High student of the month, senior Mackenzie Allen. Mackenzie is the daughter of Kelly Allen and Bryan Allen.

Mickey, as she is also known, loves to read, do math problems and eat. She plans to attend a college to become a high school math teacher. Her love of sports is demonstrated by playing volleyball since eighth grade, softball in grade 8 through 10, and basketball since eighth grade, taking her junior year off. She has also participated in speech since her sophomore year and acting in the school plays since her freshman year.

Her achievements include being on the

A Honor Roll and lettering in speech.

Mackenzie’s favorite thing about school is seeing her friends and doing math.

She advises other students to “Get your work done and be kind to teachers.”

English Instructor Chantelle Frie says, “Mackenzie is ready to step in whenever she is needed in the classroom, on stage, behind the scenes, and after school. She sets a positive example of respect, hard work, and courtesy.

Mackenzie has been a stellar TA, a wonderful classroom student, and an invaluable cast member.”

Math instructor Liza Hasse adds, “Mackenzie is well deserving of being chosen Student of the Month. She works hard to do well in every class. She is challenging herself by taking several college classes this semester. Mackenzie is respectful in class and chooses to use her class time to its fullest. I have enjoyed watching Mackenzie mature over the past four years, she has developed into a fine young adult who is determined to succeed.”

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2004 GMC Yukon and I’m having a 4x4 problem.

The system will work one time then not the next. When I take it to the shop it seems to be the time that it is working correctly. The problem it has is when I switch to 4x4 high the light just blinks then is stays in the 2wd position. Sometimes when I switch to low 4x4 then back to high it will work just fine until I put it back in the 2wd position.

-Jack in Charleston, West Virginia Dear Jack, Problems with systems that seem to always work when you have it in the shop are as big a pain for the mechanics as it is for you as the driver. The systems have computers that can often give codes which can help with the diagnostics but they don’t always indicate the exact cause and without the system actually failed at the moment it’s being inspected makes it hard to diagnose and confirm repairs. The most often found issue we see when a 4x4 system in a GM truck of your model year fails like this is a failed shift motor or shift module.

Both parts can be expensive so if you can get it to happen while at a shop so they can give a 100% accurate diagnosis it will go a long way to helping you save money and get it repaired right on the first visit.

to the high beams does work but only for about two minutes then they start to blink and fail too. I tried a switch that I installed myself and It did not help.

-Steven in Lindsay, Oklahoma Dear Steven, We have experienced headlight failure ourselves and it can be a scary thing. At least you have the high beams so you can get off the road safely. This is actually becoming a common issue on this body style car. The headlight switches do fail quite often and your replacing the switch may have been needed as well as the further repairs needed now. The switch connector needs to be checked during the installation of the switch. The pins in the connector tend to become burnt and fail due to high resistance and heat build-up. Make sure the pins are clean and in good shape and are not loose and replace any that are questionable. The pins can be found at a GM dealership parts department and the tool to install them at most auto parts stores. Also check your headlight socket connections.

Burnhamville Township December 30, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held December 30, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Joe Muellner, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of November 26, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about the presidential primary election judge training, cemeteries in our township, liquor license form, election machine grant information, and notice of Long Prairie Fire meeting on Feb. 5.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the liquor license for the Swanville/Sobieski Lions Fishing Contest on February 22, 2020. Sup. Muellner approve the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5853 through 5862: Rev. $681.25; R & B $6,961.21. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

With snow and ice buildup on the roads the contractor will use a blade with teeth and add more salt/ sand mixture to smooth out the roads. Contractor will continue to plow and sand the roads as needed as requested by the board.

The clerk will destroy week inspection forms 10 years old and older.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $76,712.12. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Filing for township officer positions will be open from December 31, 2019 until 5 p.m. January 14, 2020.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner and Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:27 p.m. Next meeting will be on Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk Swanville City January 7, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, January 7, 2020. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej and Jim Molitor. Also present: Sharon Blumke, John Gessell, Clif Allen and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Wednesday, December 3, 2019 were reviewed.

After discussion, a motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All

members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, City Engineer, was present to go over with council reconditioning of the water tower. The cost will be approx. $66,000.00 plus inspection fees.

The work will take 6 to 7 weeks to complete. Mayor Lange made a motion to hire Moore Engineering to get quotes and open the quotes before the next council meeting at 6:30pm. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Allen also discussed with council the North Berkey Avenue second addition. With water, sewer, paved street, permits, and lift station the estimated cost would be appx $960,000.00. Council decided to table for now.

Resolution #20-0107A was presented to the council, which is the purchase agreement for John Gessell for the lot to the north of his house on North Berkey Avenue. It states the $1000.00 has been received for this lot and the purchase price does not include water and sewer hookups. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept resolution #20-0107A. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Frank Gessell would like to purchase lot 3, block 2 of the North Berkey Avenue Addition. Jim Molitor made a motion to sell the lot to Frank Gessell for $2000.00 which includes water and sewer hookups. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Sharon Blumke is interested in purchasing the lot to the west of her lot on North Berkey Avenue.

After discussion, council decided to sell the lot for $1545.00 not including water and sewer hookups.

Blumke will call the Clerk with her decision. The lot would have to be rezoned to residential and a public meeting will be held before the next council meeting if Blumke plans on purchasing the lot.

Resolution #20-0107B was presented to council which states a public hearing will be set for February 4, 2020 to vacate drainage and utility easements located in block 2 of the plat of Swanville Industrial Park. Tony Maciej made a motion to adopt Resolution #200107B to set the hearing before the February Council meeting. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The budget for 2020 was again discussed. Norm Carlson made a motion to accept the budget as presented. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Lucky’s Saloon liquor license will be expiring March 6, 2020.

Jim Molitor made a motion to renew the liquor license for Lucky’s Saloon for one year with the following fees: Off Sale: $150.00, On Sale: $2000.00, Sunday License: $250.00 and 2:00 a.m. closing fee: $100.00 for a total of $2500.00 Norm Carlson seconded the motion, all members voted in favor, motion carried. The clerk will prepare the necessary paper work.

This being the first meeting of the year, the following organizational actions are made: 1. Jim Molitor will be acting Mayor in the absence of Mayor Lange.

After what seems like years of negotiating, Oct. 1 is the hard deadline for having improved identification when flying. After that date, the standard Minnesota driver’s license will NOT suffice to prove one’s identity in order to board an airplane for domestic travel.

Residents have several choices, with what’s called Real ID being one of them.

Another choice is the “Enhanced ID.” A standard passport issued by the federal government will also allow entry on all kinds of flights, domestic and international, while a passport card is only sufficient for domestic airline travel.

It’s estimated that roughly 10 percent of Minnesota residents have gone through the process and received their new ID, and officials urge not waiting until the last few weeks before starting the process. There could be a rush of applications as the deadline approaches, and that could cause headaches.

The Real ID and the Enhanced ID will also serve as drivers licenses, and after Oct. 1, the standard Minnesota driver’s license cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. To obtain either of these new licenses/IDs, one will need to prove his or her identity, prove they have a Social

Sharon was born August 20, 1943 in Park Lake, Iowa, to Milo and Helen (Hartle) Holm. On January 13, 1962, Sharon married Arnold Walther in Round Prairie where they eventually bought a home and settled there for 54 years. She worked various

Security number, and also prove their residence. All documents used for proof must be original or certified copies. Every name change a person has undergone must also be documented, so this could present a bit of a challenge for women who have been married or divorced.

The main difference between the two new Minnesota IDs is that the enhanced version contains a radio frequency ID chip and will allow entry into Canada and Mexico. Both will allow entrance onto domestic airline flights, as will a passport card. But remember, as is currently the law, only a valid passport is acceptable for entry onto international flights.

For those who may be hesitant about applying for these new IDs, and who still want to utilize airline travel, a passport will satisfy the requirement for identification. And a passport card, one that can be carried in a billfold, will be sufficient for airline travel within the United States.

We go back into session next Tuesday, the 11th of February. The state of the Minnesota economy is quite good, with a budget surplus of $1.3 billion projected two months ago. I am expecting that amount to be even larger, around 1.5 billion, when the next forecast is released at the end of February.

Because of that surplus, there are calls for renewed spending this session.

Because the two-year budget was set last year, there does NOT have to be any increased, supplemental spending passed this year.

The highest priority on my list is to work on a tax bill that addresses Section 179 depreciation for farmers and other jobs but spent most of her career sewing for local business including Animal Fair, Fingerhut and then retiring from Stearns Manufacturing in Grey Eagle.

Sharon enjoyed sewing, making quilts and blankets for family, visiting with friends, traveling and camping with family in their 5th wheel camper, and spending time with family.

Walther; 12 great grandchildren; sisters Anita (Wayne) Bundy and Diann (Fred) Johnson; brotherin-law Lowell Hanson, and sister-in-law JoAnne (Bob) Helle.

Many of those bills are quite large, with some even reaching six figures!

Viola Dalquist-Westerman Viola DalquistWesterman, 82 year old resident of Little Falls, MN passed away Monday, February 3, 2020 at the St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls, MN with Rev. Greg Satterberg officiating. Burial will take place at the Randall City Cemetery in Randall, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-7 P.M. on Friday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls and from 10-11 A.M. on Saturday at the church.

Viola was born January 21, 1938, in Browerville, Minnesota, to Frank and Ora (Van Hoever) Radimecky, the third child of nine. She was called ‘Ole’ by her family, a nickname that stayed with her all of her life.

She grew up on a farm in Browerville with her parents, 3 brothers, and 5 sisters, and graduated from Browerville High School in 1956.

She was united in marriage to Ken Dalquist on April 29, 1961, at the Cushing Baptist Church in Cushing, Minnesota. They began married life in Steamboat, Oregon, where Ken worked for the U.S. Forest Service and Viola was a supervisor at the local Bell Telephone company. While in Steamboat, Viola had their first son, Eric in 1965. In 1966, they moved to northeast Minnesota, and in 1967 Viola had their second son, Kurt, in Ely. When they lived in Ely, Viola worked as a homemaker and part-time teaching special needs students at the local school. In 1976, the family moved to Cook, Minnesota.

Viola worked at the Cook Nursing Home as a certified nursing assistant, eventually becoming the activities director there.

In 1985, they sold their home on Lake Vermilion in Cook and began semi-retirement at Randall, Minnesota, and wintered at the Lazy Palms Ranch in Edinburgh, Texas, until Ken’s death in 2003. During their time in Randall, Viola worked part-time at St. Otto’s Nursing Home. Also, she tended her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens and fruit trees, fed the birds, and spent time in the woods with Ken working on their firewood-cutting business. Viola also loved spending time with

proposal several weeks ago, and it was huge – with about $2.5 billion in various projects listed. That number will probably come down considerably when all the negotiating is done. There will be a strong push for additional funding for local roads and bridges, and local units of government should get some of those additional dollars.

On December 2, 2006, Viola married Erich Westerman at the Grace Covenant Church in Little Falls, Minnesota, and quickly assimilated with Erich’s dynamic and wonderful family of 9 kids, 19 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Viola enjoyed the big Westerman gatherings and the warmth and love they extended to her. Erich and Viola rode around their Randall farm on the four-wheeler, or “buggy” as Vi called it, and they enjoyed all the Westerman grandchildren. Upon Erich’s passing in June 2019, Viola lived at Highland Senior Living in Little Falls, Minnesota. While at Highland, she developed many meaningful friendships with the residents and staff.

Viola was a longtime member of the Grace Covenant Church; her life and actions were driven by her faith in Christ. Throughout her life, Viola had an adventurous spirit for travel, and she loved nature and the outdoors.

She especially enjoyed cross country skiing, fishing, camping, and picking berries. She was also a master seamstress and sewed for herself and her family most of her life. Viola had a passion for food that she learned from her mother and shared with her family, and Viola loved creating, preparing and serving food to everyone, as well as canning—nobody went hungry around Viola.

Viola leaves behind her two sons, Eric C. Dalquist and wife, Kathy, of Thief River Falls, MN, and Kurt K. Dalquist and wife Julie of Lindstrom, MN. Our mortgage payment is 35 percent of our take home pay each month. We have two young children, so we eat out a lot, but we have no debt other than our house. Do you think we should refinance our home?

-Jeff Dear Jeff, You two are making good money, and you’re debt-free except for your home. You can’t tighten up your budget enough to save up an emergency fund?

Stay out of restaurants, dude! There’s no law stating you have to eat out a lot just because there are kids in the house.

I mean, you’ve got no emergency fund.

That’s a pretty basic thing.

You guys need to get on a written, detailed plan, and start hitting your goals. I’m talking about a strict, monthly budget. Now, I’ll admit your mortgage payment isn’t exactly what I would’ve signed you up for. Your house payments, or rent, should be no more than 25 percent of your monthly take home pay. But your house payment isn’t what’s holding you two back. What’s holding you two back is the fact that you haven’t been willing to tighten up the finances in other areas of your life to offset biting off more than you could chew in terms of a home.

No, I wouldn’t refinance. You’re fairly close where the mortgage payments are concerned, so I think you can make it through this by looking at ways to increase your income and selling stuff you don’t need to build an emergency fund. You two have been smarter than

some, but you’re really going to have to buckle down and rearrange your priorities to make this happen!

-Sarah Dear Sarah, I teach people to stop investing temporarily while they attack their debt.

So, I wouldn’t add anything to it at this point, but the worst thing you could do is cash it out. If you do, taxes and penalties will steal a huge chunk of that cash. The only time I take money out of a retirement account to pay off debt is to avoid bankruptcy or foreclosure.

Start working the Baby Steps from the beginning. Baby Step 1 is saving up $1,000 for a starter emergency fund.

Baby Step 2 is paying off all debts from smallest to largest, except for your home, using the debt snowball method.

This will free up a ton of money! Then you’re ready for Baby Step 3, which is increasing your beginner emergency fund to a fully-loaded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

Now you’re ready for Baby Step 4, which is 15 percent of your income going into retirement!
