You have probably heard the term, “He or she is a class act.” Of course, it’s always a compliment. But exactly what does that mean?

Class is easy to recognize but much harder to define. Similarly, the absence of class is easy to detect – and a serious flaw for anyone who aspires to be successful.

First of all, class is not an “act.”

It’s a deep-seated way of life for those who possess it. Having class involves good manners, politeness, pride without showboating, empathy, humility, and an

abundance of self-control. The actions of class-act people speak louder than their words. You can see it in their body language and the way they carry themselves. Class always shows without being announced.

People can tell if you have class by the way you interact with others. If you have class, you don’t need much of anything else to be a winner. If you don’t have it, no matter what you do, it won’t make up the difference. Money, notoriety or success by themselves won’t give you class. Class comes from within, not from external sources.

As an explanation, I’ve created an acronym of what it means to be a class act: C is for calm, courteous and in control. People who have class carry themselves in a certain way. They stay calm under pressure and don’t lose their temper. They are respectful and use good manners. They don’t use crude language or criticize or complain in public. They don’t interrupt others.

L is for living by high standards.

Class acts set goals in both their career and personal life. They are not afraid to step out of their comfort zone and push themselves beyond their limits to see how successful they can become.

A is for above it all. Class acts take

the high road and refuse to stoop to the level of their adversaries. They don’t have to apologize for their unfortunate words because they know better than to give in to the heat of the moment.

S is for self-respect, and respect for others as well. They don’t gossip or say mean and petty things about others.

They take every opportunity to make others feel good about themselves and appreciated.

S is for self-confidence without being arrogant. Class acts understand their abilities and are not afraid to use them. You can develop confidence, just like any muscle or character trait, if you are willing to work hard. Class acts also increase the confidence of others.

A is for accountability. Class acts take responsibility for their actions and results, whether it’s a success or failure.

C is for compassion. Classy people understand that helping someone up will never pull you down. Compassion is a Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

T is for trust. Truthfulness and integrity are the basis for trust. Classy people are trustworthy and understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality. To me the most important five-letter word in business is T-R-U-S-T. In his book “The Success Principles,” my friend Jack Canfield lists “Be a Class Act” as Principle #55.

What I found most intriguing are some of the reasons he lists as why being a class act helps you succeed.

He writes: “People want to do business with you or become involved in your sphere of influence. They perceive you as successful and someone who can expand their possibilities. They trust you to act with responsibility, integrity and aplomb. Class acts tend to attract people who are at the top of their game.”

That’s true in the game of life or sports. Class athletes have an edge over their opponents. Why? Their poise allows them to concentrate better. They

So take a close look at your network of friends, co-workers, customers and so on. Are they class acts? Whether you realize it or not, they are a reflection of you. The good news is that you can change.

Make a decision to recreate yourself as a class act and see what kind of people you start attracting. Do fewer things, but do them better. Change your behavior for the better. Raise the quality of your attitude. When you have a higher level of personal standards, you get better treatment from everyone around you.

Obituaries Irene Margaret Shay

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Irene Margaret Shay, 81, of Albany was held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. Father Edward Vebelun, OSB officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery.

Irene passed away peacefully Saturday morning surrounded by her family.

Irene was born on June 7, 1932 in Melrose to Henry and Anna (Kettler) Mueller. She grew-up with seven siblings and graduated from Melrose High School.

Irene married Ronald Shay on June 4, 1957 and together they raised five children. After working the farm with her husband, and when her children were older, she had worked outside the home at Golden Plump in Cold Spring and as a Nurse’s Aide at Mother of

Dining Menus: February 10-14 Mercy in Albany. Irene kept herself busy by crocheting, quilting, bird watching, bowling, and dancing. She especially enjoyed wordfind puzzles, gambling on the penny slots, and playing cards with her girlfriends. Irene liked watching “The Price Is Right,” “Wheel of Fortune,” and the “David Letterman Show.”

She loved spending quality time with her family. Irene was a member of the St. Martin Missions Group, the Elrosa Seniors Group, and St. Martin Catholic Church.

Irene is survived by her children Ralph (Theresa) Shay, Albany; Linus (Julie) Shay, Rogers; Gary (Amie) Shay, Alexandria; Linda (Paul) Vorgert, Andover; Jane (Jeff) Stangler, Corcoran; her siblings Agnes Hinnekamp, Melrose; Edward (Kitty) Mueller, Melrose; Adella Thelen, Melrose; her sister-in-law Millie Mueller, Melrose; her 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; as well as many friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Ronald in 2009; her parents Henry and Anna Mueller; her siblings Mary Mueller, Joseph Mueller, Loretta (Eddie) Frieler, Lawrence Mueller; and her brothers-in-law Boniface Hinnekamp and Herbie Thelen.

Arnold “Arnie” H. Koehn A r n o l d “Arnie” H. Koehn of Camano Island, WA, formerly of Holdingford, passed away at home on Friday, January 10, 2014 after a long battle with emphysema.

Arnie was born February 10, 1941 to Waldemar and Verna Koehn in Albany, Minnesota, on the family farm. Arnie enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served his country from 1960-64. He met and married Leslie Anderson of Everett in 1964. Arnie was hired on at Scott Paper Company in November of 1964, which later became Kimberly Clark.

He retired after 43 years of faithful service.

He was a hardworking, gentle man who will

be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. He loved his family very much and his dogs Mandi and Biscuit and He loved God! Arnie was preceded in death by his infant son, Kenneth James Koehn and his parents.

Arnie is survived by his wife of 49 ½ years, Leslie; and his four daughters, Kandra (Don) Robinson of Puyallup, WA; Kristina (Jeff) Latham of Sumas, WA; Kathy (David) Melanco of Bonney Lake, WA; Kimberly (Tim) Dailey of Marysville, WA; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’ve heard you say many times you shouldn’t buy a brand-new car unless you have a net worth of $1 million. What’s so special about a million dollars?

-Angela Dear Angela, In all honesty, there’s nothing particularly special about a million dollars. A brand-new car will lose about 60 percent of its value in the first four years. So, if you’re going to turn a $30,000 investment into $12,000, you’ve got to have a bunch of money.

You’ve got to be in pretty great financial shape in order to absorb the blow.

If your entire net worth is $100,000, and you put $30,000 of it into a vehicle that will lose 60 percent of its value, you’re just being financially and mathematically stupid. Your income is your largest and most powerful wealthbuilding tool. If you’re buying things that go the wrong way in terms of value, you’re not gaining wealth; you’re losing wealth.

There’s really nothing special about $1 million. I could have said $2 million or $900,000, but $1 million is easy to remember. Plus, it’s nothing to sneeze at in terms of an individual’s net worth.

When you lose a lot, and it’s a small percentage of a lot, you don’t have to worry so much. But when you lose a lot and you didn’t have much to begin with, that’s a recipe for financial disaster!

The truth is, your mom and dad shouldn’t have co-signed for you in the first place. There’s only one reason lenders want a co-signer, and that’s because they’re afraid the person taking out the loan won’t be able to pay back what’s owed.

My goal here isn’t to beat you up, Tiffany. It’s to give you information that you—and your parents—need in order to make different, smarter decisions in the future. We all do dumb things sometimes. In the past, I did some really dumb things with very large numbers attached. The goal is to grow, learn, and try to use what we learn in order to do fewer dumb things in the future.

-Dave Dear Dave, I’m 26, and I just started a new job making $50,000. I’ve also been offered a 401(k) with no match. Should I put money into the 401(k) or open a highyield CD?

-Crystal Dear Crystal, I’ve got another idea. I’d open a Roth IRA with good growth stock mutual funds inside and fund it up to $5,500 a year. Make sure these mutual funds have been open at least five years—preferably 10 years or more—and have performed well. Mathematically, this investment, growing tax-free, will be superior to a non-matching 401(k).

Then, if you want to invest more than $5,500, you could put some additional money into the 401(k) offered by your company. Again, make sure you’re invested in good growth stock mutual funds with long, successful track records.

This has been quite a memorable winter so far with a whole lot of fresh, white snow! It truly is so beautiful as the snow rests draped across the pine trees and glistens in the sunshine!

Most of us tend to miss warm weather this time of year, and may even grumble a little or a lot, but we are continually reminded of the serene beauty in the Minnesota snow each time we get a new blanket of white sparkling crystals!

In Psalm 51, David is crying out to the Lord for His Mercy, “Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me and I will be whiter than snow!” He is asking God to blot out his transgressions and cleanse him from his sin. David acknowledges that although his sins have caused harm to others, he cries out to God, “Against you, you only have I sinned and done evil in your sight.” David knows that only God can cleanse him from sin. We need to come to that place as well when we realize and honestly recognize that it is against God that we have sinned. Only by His Grace and His Mercy can we be washed clean.

The snow that we have been so abundantly blessed with is so bright white that it is hard to imagine a ‘whiter than snow.’ Yet that is the best description that can be given to our human minds, when actually there is no figurative word to fully describe the purity we have when we are cleansed from our sin!

In David’s time there were blood sacrifices that had to be made to atone for the sins of the people. An innocent animal had to be killed to have the blood needed to make atonement for sins against a Holy God. The hyssop plant was used in ritual cleansing in the Old Testament. In Exodus 12, the plant was dipped in the blood of the sacrificed lamb and applied to the top and both sides of the door frames; Death would (pass over) those who

were protected by the blood of the lamb.

In our day, we shower often, use all sorts of products to keep our bodies, clothes, and homes clean, yet we do not deal with the grime that is stuck on the inside of our hearts. We could associate that with the sloppy, muddy parking lots, roads, and sidewalks after a thaw.

Fresh snow comes along and covers it up! We can ignore the grime for a while longer, because we cannot see it... until the next time the weather warms up. No matter how hard we try to cover it up, it still remains until we faithfully deal with it. And just as what is underneath that beautiful snow can be a danger at times, the sins we keep buried in our hearts can be a danger to us and others as well.

As Jesus hung on the cross at Calvary, beaten beyond recognition, nails in His hands and His feet, innocent blood pouring out, He said, “I am thirsty.”

They used a stalk of a hyssop plant, applied with a sponge, to soak Jesus’ lips with wine vinegar. Then Jesus said, “It is finished!” He died victoriously!

Three days later, an Angel of the Lord rolled back the stone from Jesus’ tomb~ ‘The Resurrection.’ ~ The Bible says, ‘The Angel’s appearance was like lightening and his clothes were ‘white as snow.’ ~Matthew 28:3.

Only through Jesus’ blood applied over the door frames of our hearts can we truthfully cry out to God for Mercy and Forgiveness and be assured that ‘death’ will (pass over) us. He will blot out our sin and give us a clean and fresh new start! Then we can freely begin our journey to the Promised Land- as we are washed clean and made whiter than snow!

Romans 4:7~ “Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”

Helicopter work over Interstate 94 near Melrose Motorists traveling both directions of Interstate 94 near Melrose may encounter intermittent slow traffic and delays as CapX2020 crews use a helicopter to work over the interstate.

State Patrol Troopers will use rolling road blocks to intermittently hold back traffic on I-94 when the helicopters conduct their work over the interstate.

The rolling roadblock typically moves at speeds of 15-25 miles per hour.

Groundwater management key for our area

The future use of water in the Bonanza Valley was the topic of an informational meeting held in Belgrade last week (Jan. 29).

Postponed one week because of bad weather, the gathering still attracted a large crowd to hear the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) explain how they were going to implement a program of groundwater management. The Bonanza Valley was chosen as one of three sites in the state where the program would be introduced. The other two are in the east metro area and in north central Minnesota. Although most think of the irrigated areas around Belgrade and Brooten as the Bonanza Valley, the map shown by the DNR was much larger and stretched from Lake Minnewaska on the west, down to Paynesville and Lake Koronis on the southeast.

The statewide trend of water usage is up 35 percent the last 25 years for the entire state and 175 percent for the Bonanza Valley. Those in the audience were told that water levels in the Bonanza Valley have been monitored for that span.

The increased use of irrigation is the main reason for the higher water usage, with the Bonanza Valley now having 588 permitted wells. According to the DNR, groundwater draw-downs are increasingly going deeper in the summer during times of high irrigation usage, although so far, they said, re-charge over the winter brings those levels back up again. The DNR has been notified of a total of 10 wellhead interference cases in the area, with seven of those coming since 2005.

In Minnesota, residential and household use has the highest priority, with irrigation and manufacturing usage being further down the list. At the bottom are such things as lawn watering, golf course irrigation, and car washes.

We were told that approximately 5,000 large-water usage permits have been issued statewide since 1950, with 842 of those coming in the last three years. In addition, permit applications this past year were the most since 1977.

To me, that number isn’t too surprising as we were in a time of high crop prices and high farm income. The price of corn approached $8 per bushel last year, but today those prices are in the rear-view

One of the speakers, Mark Hauck of the DNR, told audience members that, although we are not in a crises situation, they want to manage it before it becomes one. He added that the increasing use of groundwater may not be a sustainable path for continued economic growth in Minnesota.

An 18-member “Project Advisory Team” has been formed, and they will meet in a public setting to come up with ideas for water management in the Bonanza Valley. Five of the committee members are from the DNR with five more representing other state and federal government agencies. Four come from local government units, and two others represent the irrigators and rural water associations. At this point, although more may be added, only one committee member is a farmer and one is a well driller.

Local Municipality Minutes Melrose City January 2, 2014 The Melrose City Council met in a Regular Meeting on Thursday, January 2, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Melrose City Center pursuant to due notice being given thereof. Present were Council Members Jenny Mayers, Joe Finken, Dick Christenson, and Tony Klasen, Mayor Tim Vogel, City Administrator Michael Brethorst, and City Clerk Patti Haase. Mayor Vogel presided thereat. Also in attendance were several American Government students from the Melrose Area Public High School. The Council then recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Mr. Finken, seconded by Ms. Mayers and unanimously carried to approve the agenda as amended.

Kenny Horn introduced himself to the Council as a student of Mr. Rushmeyer’s American Government class and noted he was in attendance to observe the meeting.

Mayor Vogel stated that the Metropolitan Sports Commission, in cooperation with Albrecht Sign, is selling the “blue” seats within the HHH Metrodome. The intent of the seat is to put 3-6 per dugout, a few in the Fire and Ambulance Station, and a few at the various parks in town. The remainder will be put into storage for replacements. They are selling blocks of 3 and 6 seats.

The seats sell for $64.28 per seat to cities. A non-profit organization can purchase the seats for $40 per seat. Joe Finken has volunteered to drive to the Twin Cities and pick up the seats on behalf of the City. He will also be taking possession of 14 seats at the same cost.

The City is in communication with the Melrose Lions and the Melrose Little Guys Football, in an effort to acquire the seats at $40 per seat. One of those organizations would acquire the seats and then sell them to the City. The funds to pay for this would come from unallocated Fund 203.

A motion was made by Ms. Mayers, seconded by Mr. Finken

and unanimously carried adopting Resolution No. 2014-5, Resolution Acknowledging Partnership Between the City of Melrose and Melrose Little Guy Football and authorizing the purchase up to 51 seats at a cost not to exceed $3,500.

The Council then discussed scheduling the annual meeting with area township and city officials regarding the proposed 2015 budgets for the Fire and Ambulance Departments. It is recommended that this meeting be scheduled for Thursday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Fire and Ambulance Station. The proposed 2015 budget information will be presented to the Council at their January 23 meeting. The contracts between the City and area townships and cities require the City to hold this meeting annually.

After discussion, it was agreed to schedule the meeting with the cities and townships for Thursday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m.

Mayor Vogel noted that Accountant Christy Berscheit has submitted her letter of resignation effective December 29, 2013. As was done historically, the Council and Commission to direct staff and the Ad Hoc Labor & Personnel Committee to conduct a full review of all positions upon departure of an employee along with conducting an in-house assessment of the overall organizational structure for the Accountant position.

A motion was made by Mr. Christenson, seconded by Mr. Klasen and unanimously carried directing staff to conduct a full review including an in-house assessment of the overall organization structure for the Accountant position.

City Administrator Brethorst noted that with the departure of the staff Accountant, there is a need to have immediate assistance for the daily accounting work. A six-month contract with former City Treasurer Karen Thostenson, whom has assisted the City in the past in a contracted role, is being proposed. She will assist with the daily, monthly and annual reporting requirements as assist with the 2013 Audit and other miscellaneous accountingrelated activities. The contract outlines a minimum of eight hours per week with a maximum of 24 hours at a rate of $42 an hour.

Albany Senior Alex Schmitt has been invited to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournaments in Australia this summer.

Alex has been in track since the 7th grade and this is a great way to finish his high school track and field career. He is one of 1200 students selected from the United States to have this opportunity.

“I decided to go because I’ll never be able to go again in my life, so I fig-

ured Carpe Deum. Competing in this tournament is important to me because I was chosen to go do something I am good at and I enjoy doing,” said Alex.

On February 1, 2014 at 9:04 p.m., The Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a car verses snowmobile accident on County Road 104 near 321st Ave. in Burnhamville Township, section 15.

Joel Tesch, rural Long Prairie, failed to yield to a northbound Pontiac Bonneville driven by Brittany Poegel of Swanville. Brittany was unable to avoid striking the Arctic Cat snowmobile as it was in the traffic lane.

Brittany and her passenger were not injured and the car received moderate damage to the drivers side. The Arctic Cat was a total loss and Joel was examined by the Long Prairie Ambulance and released from the scene with minor injuries.

Free Workshop on Estate Planning

Thrivent Financial is hosting two free educational workshops on estate planning. Called “Estate Planning Basics,” these one hour workshops will be held at the Little Falls Senior Center at 510 7th St. NE, Little Falls. The two workshops will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 11 from 2-3:00 p.m., and again, from 5-6:00 p.m.

The workshops are being presented by Carlyle Olsen, Financial Associate with Thrivent Financial.

The “Estate Planning Basics” workshop helps participants understand the three essential elements of any good estate strategy: wills, durable/financial powers of attorney, living wills/medical powers of attorney. As a result of attending the workshop, attendees will be better prepared to take action to protect their estates and pass them on according to their wishes. Spring semester of JUMP preschool reading program starts Friday, January 31. It is held Fridays from 9-11:00 a.m. at Upsala Schools. Children who are at least 3 ½ by January 1 and who are not yet in school (not already enrolled in any other preschool class) may enroll. Students

Registration is required and ends Wednesday, Feb. 12. Participants will read “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, “The Princess Bride” by William Goldman, “Hoot” by Carl Hiaasen, and “Dead to You” by Lisa McMann, then answer questions about the books during the battle. It is not necessary to read all the books. Teens may join up in groups or be assigned to teams. Pizza and pop will be provided for post-battle relaxation. The participant limit is 20.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.
