“We’d be winning steadily for 20 years and decided we wouldn’t change,” Petty said.

Richard Petty, one of the greatest drivers in racing history, ended his career without a win in his last eight years.

Lesson learned: Resistance to change and complacency can defeat any person or organization, no matter how talented.

Success is sweet, but it can quickly sour if the ingredients aren’t fresh. I’ve seen plenty of businesses, large and small, rest on their laurels only to be lulled into a coma. On the one hand, it’s tempting to go along with the tried and true – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

But that’s an adage that needs to be tested constantly. Times change, tastes change, technology changes. People change. And aren’t we all dependent on people for our business?

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose,” said Bill Gates.

That’s why success can be a breeding ground for complacency. People and organizations become content, satisfied and comfortable – too comfortable – in the way they do things. In short, things are going well and they don’t think there is a need to change.

First lady Eleanor Roosevelt said something similar: “More people are ruined by victory, I imagine, than by defeat.”

Complacency is like a silent killer because it can happen to everyone. It doesn’t matter how large or small the company or individual. We have all battled complacency at some point. The Harvey Mackay continued to pg 5

Obituaries Walter H. “Pinky” Thelen

Walter H. “Pinky” Thelen, age 85 of Freeport, died unexpectedly in his favorite chair on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at his home in Freeport, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, February 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating.

Entombment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Walter Hubert Thelen was born February 23, 1929 in Freeport, Minnesota to Peter and Minnie (Bruning) Thelen. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1947 and continued to work at the Swany White Flour Mill as he had done all through high school. He was united in marriage to Lucille Overman on September 21, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Pinky took ownership of the mill in the 1960’s and continued to operate the mill until his retirement in 1998. The Swany White Flour Mill has been in the family since 1903.

Pinky worked at the mill for a total of 65 years. Aside from working at the mill he also owned and operated a farm for 25 years.

Pinky’s hobbies included deer hunting,

being an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, and traveling, especially to warmer climates during the winter months.

Pinky took pride in the steam engine that he donated to the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion in 1965 and has visited the show every year since 1969. Pinky also enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was a member of the Freeport Fire Department for 28 years, St. Joseph Men’s Society, Mayor of the City of Freeport for 5 years, and Supervisor of Millwood Township for 10 years.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lucille Thelen of Freeport; children, Karen (Dale) Weisbrich of Cold Spring, Gary (Sharon) Thelen of Freeport, Judy (Dan) Dirkes of Albany, Peg (Gary) Boeckermann of Freeport, and Steve (Amy) Thelen of Avon; 10 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren on the way; and sister, Jeanne Stang of Pierz.

Pinky was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Marty Stang.

Casket bearers will be Scott Dirkes, Jeff Dirkes, Chris Weisbrich, Hunter Thelen, Greg Thelen, and Maria Boeckermann.

Cross bearer will be Sommer Thelen and scripture bearer will be Jennifer Weisbrich.

Gift bearers will be Sara Christianson and Megan Borgerding. Reader will be Greg Thelen.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Norbert Sobania, age 90, of Opole, was held Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Norbert died peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 surrounded by his family.

Norbert was born January 11, 1925 in Opole to Peter and Sophia (Mastey) Sobania. He has lived on the same farm all of his life. He married Jeanette Bieniek on August 28, 1951 in Mayhew Lake. Norbert was on the Brockway Township Board of

Regina C. “Jean” Kulzer, age 88 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 6 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday morning at the church.

Regina Caroline Kuefler was born June 4, 1926 in Elrosa, Minnesota to Leonard and Caroline (Spillman) Kuefler. She was united in marriage to Albert Kulzer on July 30, 1951 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. After marriage the couple lived and farmed near Greenwald until their retirement in 1974. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald and St. Ann’s Christian Women.

Norbert is survived by his children Diane Schaefer (Greg Fisher), St. Cloud; Karen (Bruce) Oja, Burnsville; Rose Ann (Tony) Chamberlain, St. Cloud; Roger (Linda) Sobania, St. Cloud; Joyce (Dale) Hasch, St. Joseph; Dale (Melanie) Sobania, Rice; Judy (Brad) Boulton, Avon; sisters Rose Dobos, Sartell and Clara Kroll, Opole.

He is also survived by 13 grandchildren Jeff & Russ Schaefer, Ryan & Keith Maciej, Craig & David Chamberlain, Dean & Derek Hasch, Kara, Caitlyn, and Landon Sobania, Abby & Samuel Boulton; and six greatgrandchildren.

Norbert is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jeanette in 2011, his brothers Ed Sobania and Art Sobania, and his sister Delores Janski.

Jean worked as a postal employee at numerous local post offices. She also worked as a bus driver and was very active at church.

One of her favorite things was being a foster grandparent where she was lovingly known as “Grandma Jean”. She enjoyed living on the farm and farm life. Jean spent a lot of time sewing and making crafts, and loved spending time with her sister, Ann. Survivors include her brother, Joseph Kuefler of Sauk Centre; sister, Anna Marie (Sylvester) Nietfeld of Meire Grove; and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Kulzer on July 6, 2005; parents; brothers and sisters, Clara Galvin, Alma Henderson, Edwin Kuefler, Richard Kuefler, Walter Kuefler, Agnes Seger, Margaret Kampsen, Eleanor Acker, and Theresa Kuefler.

Serving as casket bearers will be Joe Nietfeld, James Nietfeld, Jon Nietfeld, Jaycob Nietfeld, Robert Nietfeld, and Leon Kuefler. Cross bearer will be Patrick Nietfeld and scripture bearer will be Sandra Nietfeld. Honorary bearers will be the St. Ann’s Christian Women.

Kenneth G. Kuhl Sr.

Kenneth G. Kuhl, Sr., 74 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at his residence. A Memorial Service was held Saturday, January 31st at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, with Pastor Kevin Zellers, Jr. officiating.

Kenneth Gust Kuhl was born on November 4, 1940 in Little Falls, Minnesota to Gust and Florence (Barthel) Kuhl. He graduated from Swanville High School.

On September 24, 1960 Kenneth married Jacquelyn Emmerich. Together they lived on the “Kuhl family farm”, with Ken and his family becoming the third generation on the farm. Ken was employed at the Flensburg Creamery, worked at road construction, and at Crestliner, while still doing his work on the family farm. In 1978, he started J & K

Farms with his wife, and they produced eggs for the next 22 years. After his retirement, Ken loved working with his son in the tree business. Ken enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting and fishing trips in the United States and Canada, baking (especially banana bread), playing cards, riding his 4-wheeler and making firewood around his land. He loved spending time with his family and they appreciated his guidance and wisdom.

Ken had a strong faith in God and attended church regularly. He was a life time member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville.

Ken will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Kenneth, Sr. is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn; sons, David (Christy) Kuhl of Swanville, Ken Kuhl, Jr. of Swanville, and Dale (Abigail) Kuhl of Little Falls; daughters, Lois (Steve) Bateman of Little Falls, Tina Kuhl of Browerville, MN, and Carol (Karl) Venske of Wadena, MN; 17 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Florence Kuhl.

He said: “Occasionally, parts were omitted from component kits prepared for assembly and inspection at another factory. Each missing part disrupted the assembly process and frustrated the workers assembling the products. I borrowed an idea from an automobile dealer in Dallas I had heard about.

The dealer received few complaints from customers because he gave them the home telephone numbers of the mechanics who worked on their cars.

I arranged for workers to include their names, work phone numbers, and self-addressed postcards in the kits they prepared. Complaints dropped precipitously.”

All these examples describe corporate complacency. But the problem also hits individuals. In this job climate, sometimes it feels safer to stay put, even when your job or company isn’t meeting your goals or needs. While security is a good thing, you also have to consider what it’s doing to your future.

If you feel good about going to work each day, you’ve probably found your niche.

• Development. Have you kept up your professional skills and credentials?

Does your position allow you the opportunity to grow and to capitalize on your strengths? Being content isn’t sufficient reason to let your skills stagnate. You should continue striving to enhance your marketability.

• Environment. Are you in a stable organization that will serve your needs well for the foreseeable future? If your company is experiencing a dip in sales or market share, you should consider how those losses might affect your position in the coming months.

It’s fine to be comfortable. It’s great to be content. But when those translate to being complacent, it’s time to take stock – before your stock is worthless.

Currently, I’m paying $1,070 a month for flood insurance. My house is worth $325,000, and water has only come up into the yard twice in over 20 years.

Since I’m doing pretty well financially, do you think I need to keep my flood insurance policy?

-Trudy Dear Trudy, From what you’ve told me about the history of your property, it sounds like your biggest concern might be if a hurricane caused a backwash in your area. Insurance is already pretty tough in Florida when it comes to those kinds of things, but you don’t want to run the risk of your house getting mowed down and losing everything.

If I were in your shoes, I think I’d

like the protection of flood insurance.

What you’re paying for the policy is such a small percentage of your world, compared to the value of your home and your income. Keep the coverage, Trudy!

-Dave Dear Dave, I have a student loan in default that is now being handled by a collections agency. They want me to pay the entire $20,000 now, or consolidate it with $16,000 in collection fees added. Are these my only options?

-Rebecca Dear Rebecca, There’s no way I’d consolidate and pay $16,000 in collection fees. Right now, they’re trying to bully you. They may eventually garnish your paychecks, but I think you can still work out something with these guys.

You’ll have to repay the loan, and probably the interest and some of the late charges, but $16,000 is a bunch of crap. Don’t run out and get another loan to pay it, but don’t let yourself be blackmailed, either. You’ve made a mess by ignoring this for so long, so now you’ll have to save every penny you can and start sending them substantial amounts of money each month.

Trust me, they’ll take your payments and cash the checks. Hopefully, you can settle on a reasonable repayment structure and have this thing killed off in

Gov’s Proposal Marks Starting Point for Crafting New State Budget With the release of Governor Dayton’s budget proposal last week, the job of crafting our state’s fiscal course for the next two years officially kicked off. And the question of what’s going to happen to our projected $1 billion surplus was partially answered in the governor’s plan in that he proposes to spend most of it. Overall spending in Dayton’s plan, if fully implemented, would come to around $42 billion for the next two years, which represents an increase of $3 billion from the biennium just completed.

At first glance, it appears that education was the recipient of the greatest spending increase in the governor’s plan. Already the single largest outlay in the state’s general fund, education spending would see an increase of about $600 million. However, most of that increase would go into new or expanded programs for early childhood education, while only about $220 million would go toward increasing base funding, the perpupil amount schools get in state aid. works out to a 1-percent increase in each of the next two years, which will leave most schools short of even keeping up with inflation. One education lobbyist at the Capitol called the basic formula “the main engine of school funding” and expressed concern with the size of the increase.

While it’s laudable to focus on early education as Minnesota works to lower its achievement gap, this may be too big a move to take in one step. The governor’s plan calls for schools to voluntarily offer pre-K classes to 4-yearolds with the state reimbursing schools at a rate of one half the amount of older students. This could also have a major impact on those who work in child care if the 4-year-olds they currently provide care for move directly into the regular school setting.

Keep in mind that this is just the starting point in budget negotiations, and both chambers of the Legislature will come up with their own spending plans. I serve on the House K-12 Education Finance Committee and we will work hard to come up with a spending plan that provides a good balance between the new focus on early education and keeping up with inflation in the general formula.

the reimbursement system our state uses to pay nursing homes for the care they provide. It’s expensive, with an initial cost around $200 million. It’s my strong hope that we can pass this bill in some form and get agreement from the executive branch for this badly needed reform.

Other interesting pieces taken from Gov. Dayton’s budget call for an increase of $27 million in base funding for the Dept. of Agriculture. Up to 25 new positions would be created, mainly to work in the area of water quality. It also increases the wolf depredation fund, which comes at a good time since the current fund has been depleted and it’s thought more claims will arise, especially since a federal court put the animal back on the endangered list and stopped the wolf hunt in Minnesota. There are also some hefty fee increases called for in Dayton’s plan, which would help fund more inspectors in the food safety area.

“Papa,” he asked in the innocent voice of a four-year-old, “how long will it take you to forget something?”

Puzzled and intrigued, I responded, “Well, Keller, I’m not sure. Sometimes I forget right away and sometimes I think about things for a long, long time.”

Just as puzzled and intrigued as I was, he then asked, “When you were a little boy did you ever break something and hide it? And when your Papa found it and got mad how long did it take him to forget that you broke something?”

“Oh my, Keller, I’m not sure I remember. Did something go wrong?” I asked.

“I broke Nonie’s cup and hid it under the bed and I want her to forget about it and not be mad at me,” came his answer.

David was aware that his sin had damaged his relationship with God. He sensed God’s displeasure with him and his feelings of guilt overwhelmed him and added to his problem. He knew why God “hid His face” from him.

But those feelings changed. Why? He repented, cried for God’s mercy and knew that he was forgiven. When he had God’s mercy he said, “You turned my wailing into dancing...and I will give You thanks forever.”

We all have experiences like Keller and David. We do something wrong, feel guilty, are filled with fear and want to know how long it will take to enjoy God’s blessings once again. Like David, ask, pray and repent.

UMN Extension to Host Workshop for Dairy Producers on Parlors, Robots

By Brenda Miller, University of Minnesota Extension University of Minnesota Extension will be hosting a workshop titled, “Parlors versus Robots: Options and Economics.” This workshop is for area dairy producers who may find themselves at a crossroads between putting in robots for automatic milking, or building a parlor.

The workshop will be on Wednesday, February 11, at ElmerZ in Sauk Centre.

The workshop will run from 10:30 a.m.3:00 p.m., with registration starting at 10:00 a.m. There is a fee.

A great line up of speakers and topics have been selected for this workshop. David Kammel with the University of Wisconsin-Madison will present on design and layout for robotic milking systems. Jim Salfer with University of Minnesota Extension will discuss options and considerations for robotic milking systems. Kevin Janni with the

University of Minnesota will talk about dairy housing and ventilation options.

Bill Lazarus with University of Minnesota Extension will share the economic comparisons of a parlor versus a robotic milking system. There will also be a panel of local dairy producers including robots, low-cost parlor, and new built parlor operations.

This workshop is a great opportunity for dairy producers to explore their options and learn about the considerations that go in to making a decision.

Producers from all size farms and stages of life are welcome to attend! ElmerZ is located at 1225 Timberlane Drive in Sauk Centre. Local Municipality Minutes Burtrum City January 5, 2015 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015.

Oath of office was taken by newly elected Council member Deb Van Havermaet.

A letter from Kevin Wunderlich was read declining the office of Mayor on a write-in vote. Letter was accepted. A nomination of Ron Strassburg for Mayor was made by Beau Krueger. Upon vote all council members approved the nomination.

Deb Van Havermaet abstained from voting.

The oath of office was then taken by Ron Strassburg. He then took over the meeting as Mayor.

Minutes of the December 1, 2014 meeting were read and approved on a motion by Kevin Wunderlich and seconded by Beau Krueger. Upon vote motion carried.

Finance report was read and approved on a motion by Deb Van Havermaet and seconded by Anna Payne. Upon vote motion carried. Motion to pay checks number 7339 thru 7345 was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Anna Payne. Upon vote motion carried.

After some discussion, a motion was made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich to install a street light on Lincoln St. on the pole that is there. All members voted in favor. Motion carried.

The City ordinances will be looked at at the next meeting.

All council members, the Mayor and Clerk will serve on the following committees: Law and Order, Streets, Finance, Weed Inspection and Building Permits.

Being no further business, a motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Anna Payne and seconded

by Kevin Wunderlich. All members voted in favor. Motion carried.

WSN will draw up the necessary papers and have the Mayor sign and send off to PFA. It was brought to the council’s attention there is an individual interested in purchasing 308 DeGraff and putting in two apartments. Being this building is in a commercial zone it will be tabled until P & Z can discuss the issue and report back to council.

Jim Barthel is interested in renting the land in the Industrial Park for 2015. Jim Molitor made a motion to rent Barthel the land for the same fee of $300.00 for 2015. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson presented to the council donations made to help cover expenses for the Swanville City Park. The Swanville Lions donated $3000.00, Swanville American Legion Auxiliary donated $200.00 and the Swanville American Legion donated $1000.00. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the donations. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Council would like to thank these organizations for their generous donations toward the park expenses.

This being the first meeting of the year, the following organizational actions are made: Jim Molitor will be acting Mayor in the absence of Mayor Peterson.

The First State Bank of Swanville will be the designated depository of the City.

The Morrison County Record will be the designated official newspaper of the City.

DNR Postpones AIS Training and Trailer Decal Program The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will postpone the new aquatic invasive species training and trailer decal program that was due to launch at the end of the month while legislators consider changes to the program.

Under a law passed by the state Legislature in 2012, anyone trailering a boat or water-related equipment such as docks and lifts in Minnesota is required to take aquatic invasive species training and display a decal on their trailer. The effective date is July 1, 2015.

“With the legislative interest in this educational program and ongoing discussions about possible changes, we are postponing the launch until we see if the Legislature acts this session to modify the program,” said Bob Meier, DNR assistant commissioner.

The DNR supports the education that would be provided under this law, but recognizes there are some concerns with the way the law is currently written. For example, people transporting boats on trailers through Minnesota to another destination are required to take the course and display a decal even if they don’t put their boat in Minnesota waters.

Since the training and decal are currently not required until July 1, the DNR wants to remind people that there will be time to see what happens legislatively and still take the course and receive decals. The agency will post any updates on trailers at www.trailers. mndnr.gov and alert the media if there are any program changes.

$5.00 entry fee per contestant. $2.00 Raffle - $3.00 Fishing.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.

All winners are responsible for their own taxes.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to a contestants disqualification and cancellation of participation in this contest.

Site of contest will be on Long Lake. Hours will be from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Live bait will be available on the ice.

Always be weary of ice conditions. We are not liable for any injury or loss of life or property.

Any alcoholic beverages won have to be claimed by persons of legal age.

Restroom facilities will be available on the lake.

Participants must act and behave in an orderly manner and be responsible for their actions. No debris is to be left in your fishing area after the contest!
