How Larry King changed my life -By Harvey Mackay I wouldn’t be where I am today without Larry King. I’ll never forget the first time I met Larry. I was in New York to tape a television commercial for my first book, “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.” I was a total unknown, a first-time author.

There, on the set, in living color, was Larry King, holding up his latest book and taping his own commercial.

We were introduced briefly when he finished. Then it was my turn on set. Ten minutes later the director said we’re done, and I headed for the elevator, where I saw Larry waiting. We made a little small talk on the way down. His stretch limo was curbside. I started to hail a cab.

He motioned to me and said: “Which way are you headed, kid?” and offered me a ride to my hotel.

I had five minutes to make an impression.

Half the people might talk about themselves.

The other half might mention how much they love Larry. However, my father taught me an important networking rule – What can I do for the other person? How can I add value to his or her life?

I didn’t know Larry’s background. I didn’t know a single characteristic, interest or goal that he and I had in common. Except the reason we had both gone to the studio.

I said: “Mr. King, I hope I’m not overreaching here, but I assume you, like I, showed up at that studio because we’d both

like to sell a ton of books.”

Larry said, “That’s why I write ‘em kid.”

The limo had now pulled up outside the entrance to my hotel. I may not have known anything about Larry, but I had done my homework on the publishing business. My self-designed, self-taught course had taken nearly six months. I had talked with over 30 authors, a slug of literary agents, a dozen publishers, a few promotional firms and six lawyers.

I proceeded to spill my guts on the book industry, and Larry told his driver to turn off the engine. He was now on the edge of his seat just staring at me and taking notes.

Even the driver turned around to listen.

I gave Larry seven ideas over the next 20 minutes, and he invited me to be on his “Larry King Live” show on CNN the same week. I sold 50,000 copies of “Swim With the Sharks” that week alone. The Oprah Winfrey people saw me and put me on her show. Another 50,000 books sold. Then it was “Good Morning America,” and the rest is history.

Larry had me on his show for almost every book I’ve written, and we became very close friends. I was amazed when he told me he never read any author’s books before interviewing them. He wanted things to be fresh and then react.

Even with all his celebrity, I never saw him refuse an autograph or photo, whether we were at breakfast, lunch, dinner or a social gathering.

Events with Larry were always memorable. He invited my Roundtable group to his Beverly Hills home where he proceeded to entertain us with story after story. We learned that he always wanted to be a stand-up comedian.

But I think the highlight of our

friendship was when he emceed a milestone birthday party for me in Las Vegas.

Larry loved boxing and Muhammad Ali. He once wrote in his column in “USA Today” that meeting Muhammad was “the biggest thrill in my life … I couldn’t sleep last night … chills running up and down my spine.”

One night I was having dinner with Larry in New York, and I brought Muhammad with me as a surprise. Suddenly a woman came up and said, “Oh Mr. Mackay, I’ve read all your books … Can I have your autograph?”

Larry went nuts and said, “Don’t you know who this is? This is Muhammad Ali. Don’t you want his autograph?”

I looked at Larry and said you bit it hook, line and sinker. I paid her $50 to come up and ask for my autograph. We were still laughing about that years later. But the point is don’t be boring. Don’t be predictable.

Larry’s curiosity about the world around him was legendary. His ability to draw people out was evident on every show.

His loyalty made him a treasured friend.

It was sheer coincidence that our paths crossed that day. And I thank my lucky stars for that chance meeting.

Mackay’s Moral: In networking, you’re only as good as what you give away.

Many of the young people on the farm were not able to attend high school.

When they reached ages 13 to 14, they were physically able to do work as well as an adult, so why waste their physical abilities by spending a majority of the day in school. Their help was either needed on the farm or in the farm home to assist with child care and the work that women on the farm were expected to do.

The reader’s daily activities prior to school classes were to help milk the cows, move the corn stalks from the shed, where they had been husked the night before and spread them in the cow yard. The corn cobs husked from the corn stalks were needed as pig feed. The corn stalks were brought to the shed from the corn shocks out in the field. In later years a corn shredder was used to tear the corn stocks apart to make them easier for the cattle to eat. After school he cleaned the barn by using a fork to clean the gutters and filling it into a box on the horse pulled sleigh. During times when the snow levels permitted, the horses pulled the sleigh to the field where it was forked off and spread on the field. He then sent the hay down the chute for the cows, after which he helped with the evening milking. Supper time was just prior to evening milking. A large part of the nourishment on the early farms consisted of potatoes. This family grew 10 acres of potatoes. This crop was a profitable crop, since it’s increase was usually much larger than the amount planted. The potatoes were not only used for people’s food, but also hog feed. The part of the crop not needed for the people and hogs were sold for cash money. There were many hours invested to grow the crop, including planting, weeding, picking, storing and application of Paris Green to discourage harmful insects. Picking potatoes in the fall took the family 2 weeks. You knew that you would have plenty of potatoes to eat the following winter, spring and early summer.

When this young farmer was 10 years old, he was able to drive the team to cultivate corn and drive a 4 horse team plowing with a John Deere gang plow. He wasn’t tall enough to reach the foot controls, so his dad strapped wood blocks to the foot controls and tied him to the seats so he didn’t get thrown off.

At age 10, he began to shock grain. At age 12, a neighbor hired him to shock his oats. He was paid $3.00 for 12 hours of oats shocking. When they got to the field, the owner gave him a bottle opener and told him to put it in his pocket. Later in the day he found a bottle of beer on an oats bundle.

He opened the beer and half blew out since it was warm, but what was left in the bottle was really good. $.25 per hour was really good pay in those days.

His favorite drink during the hot days of summer was when his mother put a syrup pail of milk with vanilla and sugar added in the well to make it cool. With no electricity there was no refrigeration, so the cool drink

Dolores (Dode) Honl

F u n e r a l services will be on Monday, February 8, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Williams Dingmann Funeral Home in St. Cloud for Dolores “Dode” Honl, 102, who passed away on January 29 at St. Benedict’s Center.

Visitation will be an hour before the service at the funeral home. Rev. John Fiscus will officiate and burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Morgan, MN at a later date.

Dolores was born on September 5, 1918 to William and Mary (Frasch) Honl at rural Morgan, MN. She enjoyed many happy, worry free days playing mostly outdoors with her brother Al during her childhood. This including skating on the Minnesota River during the winter and fishing in the summer. She attended primary and high school in Franklin, MN where she was on the famous girls basketball team. Upon graduation Dode worked in a local clothing store in Franklin for two years and then headed “West” with friend Ferne.

They needed a vacation, which lasted 6 weeks using Dode’s brother Al’s 1928 Chevy. Upon returning home, Dode attended cosmetology school in Mankato and graduated in 1940. She went into business with her talented instructor, Ingrid Averson in Renville, Minnesota. Dode and Ingrid had a successful beauty shop combined with a dress shop. After five years, Dode decided to take a one year sabbatical to

spend time with her family and friends and to do some gold mining in Arizona and mountain climbing in California.

In 1947 Dode purchased and operated a beauty shop in Bemidji and after 2 years sold this business and headed to the “Big Apple” New York City. While there Dode worked with Ingrid Averson again, assisting her in operating her beauty school. After one year Dode decided to open her own beauty shop on 55th street, near Broadway, which she owned and operated for the next 15 years. Her many customers were business people as well as retired clientele. This special group of people remained lifelong friends.

During Dode’s many years in New York City she, along with a friend, Helene Ringenberger, would come back to vacation in Minnesota to go camping in the well-known Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota.

They also fished and hunted in many northern counties. Helene enjoyed Minnesota’s outdoor activities so much; she decided to move with Dolores when she returned to her homeland of Minnesota in 1966. Dode and her friend, Helene Ringenberger, purchased a place at Big Birch Lake near Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

When back in Minnesota, Dode managed numerous beauty shops for several years. She eventually became a beauty shop inspector for the State of Minnesota covering mainly the western part of the state and retiring to her much loved Big Birch Lake home in 1976.

Over Dode’s later years of working and during her retirement years, she traveled extensively which included Russia, Australia, South America, Europe, Mexico and a great trip to Alaska. Dode and her friend, Helene, spent their retired years in the Bahamas on Mangrove Cay during the winter months. The island was 12 miles long and 5 miles wide, which was a fly in from Florida. After numerous years, they spent the next 22 years in south Texas, mainly in the Mission Area for the winter months while spending summers at Big Birch Lake fishing and swimming.

Dode was especially close to her only sibling, Ellsworth (Al) and his wife Ione, who have now passed away.

She is survived by her niece and four nephews. They include Devon Kytola, her twin brother David (Sheila) Honl, Gary (Jeri) Honl, Randy (Joey) Honl and Neal (Myra) Honl.

She was preceded in death by her parents and special friend, Helene Ringenberger. Dode also enjoyed years of great friendships and laughter with her wonderful neighbors at Big Birch Lake.

Joanne A. Heffron, age 82 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Joanne Anna Ostendorf was born March 10, 1938 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Bernard and Matilda (Woeste) Ostendorf. She graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1956. Joanne moved to Tacoma, Washington until her father passed away. She then moved back to Grey Eagle to help care for her mother.

Heffron on July 3, 1971 in Grey Eagle. She worked at Munsingwear in Little Falls, Stearns Manufacturing in Grey Eagle, and waitressed at the Hub Supper Club for over 20 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Joanne loved cooking for people. If you came over to the house, you never left on an empty stomach. She enjoyed helping take care of her family and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Heather Ostendorf (Eric Douglas) of Sauk Rapids and Nathan (Lorena) Ostendorf of Sauk Centre; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Annica, Sophia, Rylee, and Oliver; brother and sisters, Lorraine Folta of Grey Eagle, Viola Berscheid of Melrose, and Leander Ostendorf of Tempe, Arizona.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Heffron on March 18, 2018; parents; son, Steven Ostendorf on February 10, 2014; brothers, William, Melvin, Wilfred, Gilbert, Leroy, Edwin, Vernon, and Cyril Ostendorf; and sisters, Irene, Rita, and Anna Mae. Memorials are preferred.

Holdingford Man Arrested for Burglary

Kendra weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and measured 9 inches long.

On January 28, at approximately 6:58 a.m., the Stearns County 911 Communications Center received the report of a burglary that had just occurred. The victim said he had discovered a male who had broken into his garage and stolen several of his tools which he loaded into a white truck. The victim confronted the burglar, who said he had knife, and then punched the victim several times in the face. The suspect then fled the burglary scene in a white Chevrolet pickup.

A deputy responding to the call located the suspect’s truck in the area of on Co. Rd. 17 east of Hwy. 238 in Krain Twp. traveling eastbound. The deputy attempted to stop the truck. The driver did initially comply but fled again a few moments later. As the suspect was fleeing the stop, he forced another vehicle off the road and into the ditch. That driver was not injured. The suspect and truck continued eastbound on Co. Rd. 17 towards Holdingford.

Additional deputies were responding to the area as well. A deputy was waiting by the Wobegon trail, in Holdingford, and observed a white pickup turn off of Co. Rd. 17 onto a side street and parked. The suspect fled the truck to a building located at 521 Main St. which contains several apartments. The suspect was observed entering one of the units. Deputies on scene established a perimeter to contain the suspect until additional units arrived.

Information was developed rather quickly that indicated this was the residence of the suspect. A search warrant was obtained, and Stearns County negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect. That effort was unsuccessful. The Stearns County SWAT team was eventually used to make entry into the apartment. The suspect continued to not respond to verbal commands. Entry was made with the assistance of our K9 and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after 11:00 a.m. The suspect was identified as Christopher Kleve, 35, of Holdingford.

Subsequent investigation revealed that the pickup Kleve was driving had been stolen earlier from a residence in the 29000 block of Co. Rd. 17 in Millwood Twp. While the original call was evolving, the 911 center received an additional call regarding the theft of a snowmobile from an address on Sunset Beach Road in Millwood Twp. This location is just west of the location from where the pickup was taken. The caller in the snowmobile theft also reported a truck that was left at their residence. Continued investigation resulted in information that the truck left at Sunset Beach Rd. had been stolen from a residence in the city of Sauk Centre. Kleve is also believed to have committed a gas drive off early in the evening on January 27 in the city of Albany and his vehicle was later found on Co. Rd. 186 just SE of the city limits of Sauk Centre.

Kleve has been booked into the Stearns County Jail on two counts of 2nd-Degree Burglary, Fleeing Police in a Motor Vehicle and Criminal Damage to Property. At this time additional charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Grey Eagle City • December 21, 2020 The special meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Acting Mayor Thom Muellner at 7:00 p.m., on Monday, December 21, 2020 in Council Chambers. Council members present at City Hall were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Brian Hollenkamp and Bill Pohlmann. Council member Joe Arnzen was absent. Also in attendance were Clerk Lori Hellmann and remote guest Steven Konsor.

The purpose of the meeting is to consider Ordinance 2020-02, An Interim Ordinance Establishing a Moratorium Temporarily Prohibiting the Platting of Property and The Issuance of Building Permits for Storage Sheds on Undeveloped Parcels.

Due to the increasing interest that is being shown for the building of storage sheds on undeveloped or vacant lots within the City, the Council requested that the City Attorney draw up the proposed ordinance establishing a moratorium on the platting of property and the issuance of building permits for storage shed on undeveloped parcels. This moratorium would give the city council time to determine how the best interest of the city and its residents would be served regarding the use of the vacant or undeveloped parcels within the city.

Council member Brian Hollenkamp joined the meeting at 7:05 p.m.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to adopt Ordinance 2020-02, An Interim Ordinance Establishing a Moratorium Temporarily Prohibiting the Platting of Property and the Issuance of Building Permits for Storage Sheds on Undeveloped Parcels. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and a roll call vote was taken.

The above stated ordinance is as follows: City of Grey Eagle: ORDINANCE NO. 2020-02 AN INTERIM ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING A MORATORIUM TEMPORARILY PROHIBITING THE PLATTING OF PROPERTY AND THE ISSUANCE OF BUILDING PERMITS FOR STORAGE SHEDS ON UNDEVELOPED PARCELS THE CITY OF GREY EAGLE ORDAINS: SECTION 1: Purpose and Intent The City of Grey Eagle (“City”) recognizes significant public interest and concern over the number of vacant parcels available for residential development in the City and the construction of storage sheds and storage units on these vacant parcels.

The City desires to regulate the use of property in a manner that is consistent with the purpose and intent of encouraging residential development.

Minnesota Statutes Section 462.355 allows the City to adopt a temporary interim ordinance for a period of up to twelve (12) months from the date it is effective, to allow for such study and adoption of comprehensive plan, zoning and/or other official land use controls in order to protect the public health, safety and general welfare. The same statute allows for the limited extension of the period under particular circumstances.

The City has concluded that additional study is required related to the amount of vacant parcels available for residential development, the best use of these vacant parcels going forward and the effects allowing these parcels to be used solely for storage sheds and storage units.

There is a need for an interim ordinance to be adopted for the purpose of protecting the planning process and the health, safety, and welfare of the citizens of the City until such a study has been completed.

SECTION 2: Prohibition Pursuant to State Statutes 462.355, the City hereby adopts and approves this interim ordinance temporarily prohibiting the issuance of any building permits and platting of property for the purpose of construction of storage sheds or storage units on currently undeveloped parcels. During the effective period of this interim ordinance, the City will not accept any permit or plat application or issue any permit for the construction of storage sheds or storage units on currently undeveloped parcels.

SECTION 3: Effective Date and Duration This ordinance shall take effect and be in full force

Becki Jo Haight

A celebration of the life of Becki J Haight was held Saturday, January 30, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie.

Becki Jo Haight was born November 25, 1968 to Rolland and Gloria (Conine) Haight in Battle Creek, MI. She lived there until 1980 when her family moved to Kelliher, MN. She graduated from high school in 1987 and went on to attend Bemidji State University.

Becki Married Jon Chase in May of 1989.

They had two children, Lance and Nora. Her marriage to Jon ended in 2004.

Becki married Kim Miller on October 31, 2008. Which was also the year she was diagnosed with Scleroderma which is a rare disease that involved the chronic hardening and tightening of skin and connective tissues.

In 2015, at Northwestern Medical Center, she had a stem cell transplant. She was grateful

from and after its passage and publication. It shall remain in effect until the adoption of official controls contemplated herein or one year, whichever occurs first, after which occurrence this ordinance shall lapse, unless properly extended pursuant to state law.

Lori Hellmann, Clerk Burnhamville Township • December 29, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held December 29, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center with sanitizing and social distancing again. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Treasurer Pam Throener was absent. Loren Roe and Erv Herdering were also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of November 24, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Muellner and was seconded by Sup. Johnson.

For correspondence the township received letters informing the board of two fire calls from Long Prairie Department in our area, the Grey Eagle fire meeting was not held in person due to COVID restrictions, reminders of filing for township offices, opening on Todd Co Board of adjustments, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency hearing on Feb. 4, and an anonymous letter with concerns around the township. The fishing boat landing will be improved this spring with help from the Swanville Sportsman Club. The board is not aware of grants to remove abandoned property and this board does not handle planning and zoning issues. America is a free country and the township would like all land owners and residents to keep their property in reasonable condition.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 6027 through 6036: Rev. $635.62; R & B $2,266.85; Fire $8,816.00. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A resident complained of trees overhanging the road on 160th St. by Lady Lake. Supervisors will take care of it.

In the road report board members discussed road signs with the county and they said no good sign to make traffic slow down. Board will evaluate in the spring. Roads are being monitored for conditions.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $72,711.59.

Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Johnson seconded motion. Motion passed.

One supervisor and the treasurer position are open to file for office for two weeks now.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson.

Her last employment was with R.R. Donnelly in Long Prairie. During her employment there, she earned her degree in accounting and business management in 2014 from Rasmussen College. She enjoyed crafting, genealogy, motorcycling, motor sports, reading and politics but the things that lit up her life was getting together with family and friends. Becki helped build bridges with family members in her life. Even now, after Jesus has taken her home, she continues to bring family together.

He also explained the 2020 Water Usage and how we are at a 17.6%-20% discrepancy from water pumped to water billed.

City Office Report: Stevens explained how the audit went last week and reviewed the February Calendar.

Planning Commission: Brian Lange reported on the Planning Commission’s meeting.

Recreation Board: Johnson explained what happened at the Rec Board meeting.

Unfinished Business: Heritage Days Meeting: Johnson reminded everyone of the Heritage Days Meeting, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Johnson updated the Council on the current stage of the Upsala Senior Living.

New Business: St. Mary’s Raffle Permit for March 26, 2021. Stevens explained the state-requested letter from St. Mary’s Church to change the date of the raffle from the raffle they were planning to hold last year but could not because of the pandemic.

Benson approved the change of date from April 3, 2020 to March 26, 2021, 2nd by Brian Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Co-op board for the Elevator, Creamery, and Oil Station. He also served on the Holy Family School board. He held many offices in the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a lector, eucharistic minister, and usher at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Rich’s hobbies include bowling, golfing, and playing cards along with watching the Vikings, Twins, and FOX News. He and Alice enjoyed spending winters in Arizona for 18 years and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife, Alice, of 62 years; children, Patty Odegard of Sauk Centre, Susan (Ed) Maus of Kimball, Jean (Lyle) Zimmer of Turlock, CA, Steve (Grace) Peters of Peoria, AZ, Rose (Todd) Larson of Sartell, Deb (Brian) Eisenschenk of Cold Spring, Jerry (Stacie) Peters of Big Lake, and Jeff (Melanie) Peters of Sauk Centre, 22 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; brothers, George (Delores) Peters and Herb (Alice) Peters, all of Sauk Centre.

Rich was preceded in death by his parents; sister MaryAnn Spanier (and her family); brothers Jim and Bob, and great-granddaughter, Braylee Pridal.

Serving as casket bearers will be Rich’s grandchildren, Jason Odegard, Jenna Maus, Lyle Zimmer, Jr., Jarrett Pridal, Sam Larson, Tracy Eisenschenk, Tyler Peters, and Lindsay Peters. Marcella M. Marsolek

10, 1946 in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN. Marcella and Dominic farmed for 25 years near Bowlus, MN. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie, MN, and a member of the Christian Mothers. Her greatest joy was caring for her family. She loved to host get-togethers and eat, play cards, or play dominoes. She could cook up a storm and bake a mean Polish coffee cake. She always made sure you never left her home hungry. Marcella and Dominic loved to spend time Up North at Pat and Linda’s cabin enjoying nature at it’s finest.

Left to cherish her memory is her son, Patrick (Fiancé Linda) of St. Anna, MN; grandsons, Cody (Darcy) Marsolek of Albany, MN, Clint (Taylor) Marsolek of St. Joseph, MN; great-grandchildren, Cole, Brodi, Kendall, and Connor.

Marcella was preceded in death by her husband, Dominic (2013); her parents; and siblings, Eleanor Solarz, and Lloyd Fussy.

Richard “Rich” J. Peters, age 87, of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, February 6 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Greg Paffel officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

The Mass will be recorded and placed on his website Saturday afternoon.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m.

Friday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Richard Joseph Peters was born to Alphonse and Cora (Wiener) Peters on January 16, 1934 in Belgrade, MN. As a young boy he moved with his family to a farm south of Sauk Centre in 1941. He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957.

He married Alice Rose Rooney on September 9, 1958 in Padua, MN. They farmed with Rich’s brother, George, for 11 years south of Sauk Centre. They bought a farm 3 miles away in 1968, retiring in 1988 and moving into town.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie, MN with Father Roger Klassen officiating.

Burial will be at the Holy Cross Parish Cemetery in North Prairie. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

-Kurt Dear Kurt, In your current state of mind, this entire idea is a trap. Don’t misunderstand, I love the idea of someone living their dream and owning their own business. But you just mentioned starting your own business in same breath with opening some sort of franchise.

That tells me you don’t really know what you want to do.

Have you ever heard someone say they’re “going all in?” When you’re playing cards, that means you’re about to bet everything on a single hand. But here’s the deal, it’s never smart to go all in when it comes to small business. That’s a good way to turn a dream into a nightmare.

I’m urging you to really think about this before you take action. You didn’t mention anything about your financial situation, other than you have a 401(k). That’s a good thing,

but if it’s all you have—and you don’t have any other savings set aside—you could be in real trouble. If you decided to leave your job, and your idea for your own business doesn’t pan out, you’ve lost a chunk of your retirement savings. It’s gone for good. Bankruptcy also becomes a real possibility. Opening a business just because you don’t like your current job, or you’re angry at “the man,” is a bad idea.

You need to find something you truly love doing, because to have any chance of success you’ll have to live and breathe that business day and night, seven days a week.

Don’t make any rash decisions about your current job right now. If you really want to start your own business, begin by doing a lot of research, saving as much money as you can, and thinking about things you could do for a living that would make you smile every day. Once you figure that out, the next step is devising a plan that will allow you to open a business without putting your entire financial world in danger. In other words, how can you start small with the money you have, instead of damaging your retirement funds or taking out a loan?

It’s not an either/or proposition, Kurt.

You don’t have to risk it all to get away from a job you hate and into one you love!

Dear Motor Medics, I heard you talking about electric cars on your radio show and how they are going to be here right away and how we will all be forced to buy them. I have some questions. How are they supposed to work in the north where its zero? Everyone knows that batteries lose more than half their charge in the cold. And what about all that weight of the batteries and all the junk batteries that will be lying around? And one more thing, what about charging and where do they expect all that electricity to come from?

-Cory in Bottineau, ND Dear Cory, Pull back the reigns a bit. These cars are not all going to appear overnight, and no one is forcing you to own one. The same was said about the millions of hybrid cars and trucks here now when they first appeared. At some point yes, there will be no more gas cars and you would have to buy electric but that could be many, many years.

The cold does not affect modern batteries like it used to. Just look at the hybrids out there working in the cold. Weight is about the same once you remove the gas engine components and batteries get recycled every day. Do you fill your car every day?

Not usually and that goes for charging as well. Most cars will be plugged in for a short charge nightly greatly reducing the grid use.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a flex fuel vehicle but have never used anything in the fuel tank other than E10 or E15. This car is five years old and I have thought about using the less expensive E85, but a lot of friends tell me that that is a dumb idea because it will only get half as many miles per gallon and that it will ruin the engine if I use it too much. -Kelly in Saint Jo, Missouri Dear Kelly, It’s funny how we get advice from others and it sticks with us forever. When the three of us here on our radio show were kids our dads taught us which motor oil was best and each one of us has a different favorite.

They also taught us that starting your car with the AC turned on would kill it. These are both things that are just not true. Ethanol will not kill your car, and neither will one brand of oil vs. another. If you have a newer flex fuel vehicle the name says it all.

It was designed to run on fuel up to E85 and should be fine if it is in a good state of tune.

Sticking with blends of around 30% or less will net the best mileage though. The time length should not be and issue either.
