Universal traits define great leaders -By Harvey Mackay A young prince, deposed when an enemy overran his kingdom, fled to a neighboring realm where a friend ruled as king. He hoped his friend would grant him a new kingdom. Instead the king gave him 100 sheep.

Surprised and puzzled, the prince took his sheep out to a field. Soon a pack of wolves attacked and killed all the sheep.

The prince told his friend what had happened, and the king ordered that the prince be given 50 sheep. But again the wolves came, ravaging his flock. He returned to the king, and this time was given 25 sheep.

But now the prince thought to himself, “If I don’t take care of these sheep, I won’t get any more.” So he built fences and hired guards. In a short time his herd grew to 500 sheep.

When he told his friend, the king ordered that the prince be given a nearby territory to rule.

“Why now?” the prince asked.

The king replied: “When you first came to me, you took leadership for granted. Today you understand that to lead wisely, you must take care of others. This is what I wanted you to learn.”

Leadership is not about control. It’s about taking care and concentrating on your people.

Get to know them as human beings that want respect from you.

Effective leaders demonstrate three traits that are especially important: compassion, authenticity and consistency.

Compassion is defined as “a sense of shared suffering, most often combined with a desire to alleviate the suffering of another and to show special kindness to them.” The Golden Rule is clearly based on the concept

of compassion.

When you show your people that they are more than drones who show up to get the job done, they will see you as more than just the paycheck dispenser. Let them know you understand they have lives beyond their working hours, and that you value their contribution to the success of the operation.

Leaders must learn to sacrifice for others.

Take the example of the famous general Alexander the Great, who led his army across a desert. After 11 days out, he and all the soldiers were near death from thirst. A soldier came up to him and offered him a cup of precious water.

Alexander asked, “Is there enough there for 10,000 men?”

When the soldier shook his head no, Alexander poured the water out on the desert sands, refusing to take even a sip.

Authentic leaders are genuine and believable. They don’t try to impress or fake things. They are trustworthy. Trust is central to leadership. People must be able to trust that their leaders are doing the right thing for them as well as for their customers.

Leaders need to be consistent. People should always know what is expected of them and how they will be treated. Consistency develops routines and builds momentum.

Managers and leaders must be consistent in their behavior and attitude. This sets a good example and eases concerns. Trust is built upon the foundation of consistency.

Leadership is so much more than just bossing people around. Being in charge is hard enough without confusing the roles. While almost everyone has a boss of some kind, the fortunate ones also have a good leader. Harry

He said this of the two types of executives: “The boss drives the people; the leader coaches them.

“The boss depends upon authority; the leader on goodwill.

“The boss says, ‘I'; the leader, ‘We'.

“The boss fixes the blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown.

“The boss knows how it is done; the leader shows how.

“The boss says, ‘Go'; the leader, ‘Let’s go'.”

General Dwight Eisenhower used a simple device to illustrate the art of leadership.

Laying an ordinary piece of string on a table, he’d illustrate how you could easily pull it in any direction.

“However, try and push it,” he cautioned, “and it won’t go anywhere. It’s just that way when it comes to leading people.”

Eisenhower, who went on to become U.S. President, understood that you can’t push people around. You have to work with them and pull them along.

Mackay’s Moral: Leadership is the only ship that doesn’t pull into a safe port in a storm.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Early Cures

Home cures were very common over a century ago.

Several things contributed to this occurrence. One of the reasons that medicine was commonly created in the home was that much of the population were recent immigrants and they were comfortable with cures from the old country. Secondly, many of the families were financially strapped and didn't have the money to get cures from the drug store. The last and probably the most common reason was that getting a doctor was a hassle.

The doctor frequently made house calls. Prior to the telephone, a messenger needed to rely on horsepower to get to the doctor's office to get help and since the doctor was frequently making house calls, he may not be there.

So now, what does the messenger do? Does he leave a message at the doctor's home or office, or does he find out where the doctor was and try to track him down? In the mean time the patient is suffering at home. The patient may be suffering from some ailment that a neighbor has medicine for. It was probably something from a local plant and it was considered to be better than no medicine.

So it was tried and sometimes it created relief.

If it worked, that home cure was probably on that home's shelf for future generations.

The early drug manufacturers used some of these home cures as a basis for their commercially marketed cures. If one buys a cough medicine, you may find that it tastes similar to the old home cure of brandy and honey. It's very possible that the home cure is still the most effective.

of earwax placed on a bee sting takes away the pain.

A slice of raw potato applied on a sliver overnight will remove the sliver.

Crushed potato applied to serious burns will relieve pain and promote healing. It may not be convenient to wrap some potatoes to your body, but the result far outweighs the inconvenience.

Some of you may remember your grandparent blowing smoke into your ear to take away the earache. It worked, but it is hard for a manufacturer to put that cure in a pill.

Another cure for earache is the application of garlic oil in the ear.

Vicks is still commonly used for cold relief. It seams that in more recent years the formula has changed. It is probably something that was originally created by combining mustard and evergreen tips with goose grease.

Thyme was known for it's ability to keep bacteria away. It was taken as a tea and placed on bandages to keep infectious bacteria off of a wound.

Cranberries were used as a help for reducing symptoms of bladder and urinary problems. This cure is still used today.

Plantain weed was and is eaten as a green salad product. Applied to wounds, it reduces swelling, promotes healing and reduces pain.

The plants are probably as widespread in years past as they are today.

This last weekend was filled with family events. Saturday was our first grandson’s, first birthday party. There were cousins and in-laws and people I did not know. Interestingly the other grandparents grew up in the same town I grew up in. So, while everyone else was enjoying the party we were talking about the old days (about 45 years ago). Needless to say, I had a great time, and I believe everyone else did too.

Sunday brought us to Onamia, MN for my wife’s family reunion. Brother in laws, and sister in laws, parents and cousins, and babies, and even a possible new husband. We had a group picture and then another one of my wife’s siblings and parents. There was lots of food, including pies and cookies.

I am curious, how many readers are church goers, not just church goers, but fellow believers in Jesus Christ. In the human families that I just explained to you, there are several that do not get along. We as people have good memories. Some remember the bad things people say or do for years and years. In the body of Christ this ought not be the case.

The Apostle Paul gives us some very good guidelines in Colossians 3:13-15 “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.”

Just a note about this text. We are to forgive in the same way that Jesus forgives us.

Have you ever thought about the day Jesus was put on the cross? Jesus said to His Father, “forgive them for they don’t know what they are doing.” These are the same people that just put Him on the cross. Sounds like good advice.

One more thing, the last three words… “And be thankful.” Do me a favor, think about those three words this week, and ask God to help you to be thankful, even when things aren’t going your way.

Obituaries

Leonard L. Czech

Leonard L. Czech, 89-year-old lifelong resident of Elmdale, MN, passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022 at St. Gabriel’s in Little Falls. Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father David Grundman officiating. Burial will take place in the Parish Cemetery. A public memorial celebration will take place at a later date.

Leonard L. Czech was born on April 10, 1932 in Elmdale, Minnesota to the late Tom and Helen (Jendro) Czech. He attended school at District 1184 in Elmdale. Leonard was united in marriage to Joann (Warzecha) on February 5, 1951 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN. The couple made their home early on in Elmdale, later moving to the farm in Swanville Township, where they lived for many years.

Leonard was a very loving hard working husband and father. Together Leonard and Joann were blessed with 5 children, James, Mary Carol, Gerald, Michael, and John. He attended St. Edwards Catholic Church his entire life. Leonard was a very personable, caring, and generous man.

He worked many jobs early in his life including the boats, carpenter, and as the proprietor of the Elmdale Liquor Store and Dance Hall. In 1964 they moved to the farm where he farmed and he began working at the Little Falls School District for about 35 years as a custodian. Leonard also enjoyed music. As a concertina player he had his own band “The Lenny- Ed Band”. He also played with many other local polka bands. In October 2019, he moved to the Swanville Apartments where he was able to help his brother Arnold.

Leonard enjoyed visiting and caring for many people.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, James (Theresa) Farmington, MN, Mary Carol, Farmington, MN, Gerald (Karrie), Little Falls, MN, Michael (Mary), Holdingford, MN, John (Alma), Little Falls, MN. Five grandchildren, Andrew (Amy) Czech, Sarah (Uri) Welshans, Tony (Kaley) Czech, Natalie (Nick) Deane, all of the Twin Cities area, Gloria (Jeremy) Stockinger, Sauk Rapids, MN. Eight great-grandchildren, Cooper Czech, Ivy Czech, Victor Welshans, Vera Welshans, Vivian Welshans, Elsie Czech, Louis Czech and Nathan Stockinger. He is also survived by his brother, Arnold Czech of Swanville, and sister, Dorothy Stanek of Hoyt Lakes; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Joann and parents, Tom and Helen Czech.

Donald E. “Don” Gaebel, age 71 of New Munich, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, February 1 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating, Interment was in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Donald Edwin Gaebel was born November 27, 1950, in Melrose, Minnesota to Cyril and Alfrieda (Schulte) Gaebel. He served in the United States Marine Corps for two years. On October 26, 1974 he married Judith Barten at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald. He farmed all his life with his family. Don had a very unique way of approaching life, with an analytical mind and a sly grin on his face. He thoroughly enjoyed playing cards, winning at carbles, and most of all, playing with his grandchildren. There was always time for one more game.

Don was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Immaculate Conception Catholic United Financial, and St. Joseph the Worker Knights of Columbus Council 16455 of Freeport.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Gaebel of New Munich; children, Kelli (Kevin) Meyers of Albany, Sandi (Jason) Mattox of Stillwater, Greg (Ryan) Gaebel of Albany, Tim (Megan) Gaebel of Freeport, and Jon (Rachael) Gaebel of Albany; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; siblings, Mary Kay (Steve) Flynn of Elk River, Richard “Rich” (Sherry) Gaebel of Albany, JoAnn (Jerry) Fleischhacker of Albany, and Sue Ann (John) Tidd of Sartell.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Kenny Gaebel.

Serving as casket bearers were Greg Gaebel, Tim Gaebel, Jon Gaebel, Dustyn Gerads, Carter Philippi, and Cooper Mattox. Cross bearer was Brianna Gerads and scripture bearer was Grace Mattox. Readers were Sheila Olmscheid and Corrie Rivers. Gift bearers were Gwen Gaebel, Jack Gaebel, and Natalie Gaebel. Eucharistic Minister was Megan Gaebel. Eulogy was by Amy Hennen. Honorary bearers were Jeff Hoppe, Chase Hoppe, Ron Hoppe, Carl Schulzetenberg, Dennis Thull, Jim Thull, Gary Thull, Butch Thull, Morrie Mayers, Clarence Kampsen, and Willie Nathe.

Ronald John Magner

Ronald “Ron” John Magner, age 78 of Grey Eagle, MN and N Ft Myers, FL, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 21, 2022.

Everyone who knew Ron knows he would prefer a party over a funeral, so we will be holding a future gathering(s) in his honor.

Ron was born October 29, 1943 in Minneapolis to John and Lorraine (Howe) Magner.

He married Dianne Huss on June 5, 1965. Ron grew up in Richfield and graduated from Richfield High School in 1961. After marrying Dianne they settled in Bloomington, until the cabin called him to move closer, so they settled in Rogers where they lived for more than 20 years and where they were members of Word of Peace Lutheran Church.

Ron began his career at Western Electric before working for Warner Industrial Supply (later Hagemeyer) for 43 years until his retirement. They then started enjoying their winters in sunny Florida where he would torment his MN relatives daily by telling them how warm it was. They continued to enjoy their summers on Little and then Big Birch Lakes.

Ron loved to hunt and fish. There also wasn’t a kid he couldn’t teach to waterski at the cabin.

He was a member of the Rogers Lions Club and current member of the Grey Eagle Lions Club. During retirement his favorite past time was puttering in the garage or shed where all of his “keepers” allowed him to fix anything and everything and where he’d invite folks to stop by and enjoy a Blue Smoothie with him because in retirement “everyday is Saturday”.

Ron was a loving, supportive and fun husband, dad and “papa”. Survivors include his wife, Dianne Magner; children, Suzanne (Guy) Logan of Edina and Steve (Suzanne) Magner of N Ft. Myers; and seven grandchildren, Kianna, Kylie, Trevor and Talon Magner, and Julianne, Andrew and Laura Logan.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Michael.

Ron was an extraordinarily special guy who will be dearly missed by Dianne, his children, his grandkids and many other relatives and friends.

John Voss

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of John Voss, age 65 of Holdingford, was held Tuesday, February 1st at the Church of All Saints, St. Mary in Holdingford. Burial was in the parish cemetery. John died Thursday, January 27th at his home after a short battle with cancer.

John was born October 15, 1956 in Little Falls to Arnold and Florence (Bieniek) Voss.

He graduated from Holdingford High School and became a metal finisher-polisher at Seitz Stainless in Holdingford. He married Pam Ebnet on September 8, 1979 in Holdingford. He was a member of the Church of All Saints, St. Mary. The couple has three children. John loved his family unconditionally, watching his grandchildren grow, traveling, vacations at the cabin, naps in front of the computer, baking his famous caramel rolls, and waking up before everyone. John was loyal to those he loved, and was the first to lend a helping hand. He played a good game of bean bags, you were lucky to have him on your team and always offered commentary in the background. John the car fanatic loved his Chevy’s, loved tinkering in the garage fixing vehicles, he could fix anything, but always said “you can’t fix stupid!" John loved his job and the people he worked with. No-one was safe from his practical jokes, he had a wonderful sense of humor.

John is survived by his father, Arnold Voss; his wife, Pam, Holdingford; his children; Mary (Drew Otterson) Voss, Lake City; Adam (Cassandra) Voss, Holdingford and Emily (Eric) Schmidt, Albany. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and his brothers and sisters, Yvonne (Dan) Puchalla, Andover; Myron (Alverna) Voss, West Haven, UT; Arnold “Butch” (Carol) Voss, Jr.; Carol (Frankie Werner) Voss Minneapolis.

He is preceded in death by his mother. His father in law Elmer Ebnet and his mother in law Mary Ann Ebnet.

Loris M. Bunger

Loris Bunger, age 91 of Albany, MN passed away peacefully on January 19th at Mother of Mercy Senior Care.

Loris was born in Lennox South Dakota on March 14th 1930.

She graduated from Lennox High School while working long hours at a local grocery store as a Customer Service Clerk. On February 3rd, 1950 she married Kennard Bunger in Lennox, South Dakota. Loris and Kennard were happily married for 15 days short of 72 years. They moved to Sioux Falls and were members of First Reformed Church and later Good News Reformed Church.

She, along with Kennard were the Custodians of First Reformed Church for 30 years.

Loris enjoyed embroidering, quilting and created handmade quilts for many of the family, painstakingly hand quilting around all of the embroidered designs on each and every quilt.

Loris enjoyed the outdoors. She and Kennard spent much time camping in their favorite place, the Black Hills of South Dakota. For a great many years they assisted all summer at Big Pine Campground just outside of Custer where they would spend nearly 5 months of the year in their camper. Loris enjoyed baking cookies for each and every holiday meticulously decorating each cookie by hand. She was known to often bake cookies while camping.

Loris and Kennard moved to Albany in the late fall of 2007.

Loris is survived by her husband Kennard Bunger of Albany, 3 children, Gaylon (Sue) Bunger of Sioux Falls, Marcy (Glenn) Mushaney of Ft. Mohave, AZ and Todd (Heidi) Bunger of Albany. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Loris is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Johanna Van Ningen, sister Alva and Elmore VanLoh, sister in law Viola and Delmer Kuper and grandson Erik Bunger, all formerly from Sioux Falls.

As per Loris’s request no services will be held at this time. Internment will take place in Lennox, South Dakota at a later date.

Marlin J. Hukriede

F u n e r a l Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, February 3, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend for Marlin Hukriede, 75, of Long Prairie who passed away Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at his home. Rev. Justin Hesterman will officiate. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.

Marlin was born December 3, 1946 to Bernard and Phyllis (Lemke) Hukriede in Eagle Bend where he attended school. He worked on the family farm before he struck out on his own.

He operated his own dairy farm until 1986 when he began driving for Carlson Tucking. Prior to his retirement in 2008, he worked at Tri-City Paving & Construction where he operated trucks and machinery as well as all tasks involved in road construction.

Marlin enjoyed riding horse, especially on the trail. He liked to go camping. He always looked forward to deer hunting season. A farmer at heart, Marlin always kept close to tractors.

All would know his favorites, Allis Chalmers and Farmall. He developed quite a collection of toy tractors. He enjoyed spending time in his shop doing necessary repairs to his tractors or sometimes just tinkering while drinking a cold beverage.

He is survived by his wife, Michelle (Ahrendt) Hukriede, four sons, Darin (Jacqueline) of Grey Eagle, Mike (Lisa) of Cold Spring, Greg (Perla) of Palm Bay, FL and Kyle (Rachel) of Long Prairie; three daughters, Christine (Steve) Rask of Ocala, FL, Sara (Karl) Pautsch of Brahm and Rosa (Andrew) Prill of Long Prairie; his sister Carlotta Bartel of Ashby; step-sons, Darin (Rachael) Lenz of Bertha, Shaun (Hannah) Lenz of Staples, Jay Lenz of Long Prairie, and Seth Hess of Eagle Bend; stepdaughter Kelly Andreasen of Long Prairie; thirty five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Bernard and Phyllis and brothers, Ronald and Byron Hukriede.

Kresha Proposed Bill for Water Improvement in Swanville

Representative Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, introduced House File 2884 on Thursday, the first day of the 2022 session. The bill provides more than $3 million in Public Facilities Authority funding for Swanville water improvement systems, allowing the city to design, construct, engineer and equip capital improvements to the city’s drinking water system.

“Taking care of our water infrastructure is critical for our small towns, many of which can’t afford to make these upgrades on their own, Representative Kresha said. “This funding will make sure residents have access to clean drinking water and will reduce the local tax burden.”

In addition to constructing a better water system in Swanville, HF2884 sets aside funding for ground-level water storage tanks and pumping pressure systems to replace the existing tower, removal of that tower, installation of new wells, a water meter replacement and more.

several paths he could follow to get involved in what he loves about the idea of social work.

I’m guessing he has a passion for counseling and advocating, too. Finishing a four-year degree would put him in a position where he could potentially move into a guidance counselor role or something along those lines, considering his background. But taking out loans isn’t necessary. He just needs to be patient, and wait a little bit while you two buckle down on the Baby Steps and get out of debt. He could get a second job for a while nights or weekends, and then you’d be able to pay off your debt faster and avoid those stupid loans thanks to the cash you set aside. Plus, there are millions of dollars in scholarships out there for traditional and non-traditional students.

Sometimes when people feel stuck in a job, they automatically default to the idea they need a degree. What your husband really needs right now is a clear idea and direction.

Then, you determine if a degree is necessary to get there. Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not against social work. But I’ve talked to so many people who went six-figures into debt, only to wind up making $38,000 as a social worker for the state. That’s crazy!

You two need to sit down together, and talk all this out. Tell him why you’re worried, and point out that borrowing a bunch of money isn’t the only way—and definitely isn’t the smart way—to make this happen. If you really want to support him, Britney, you need to help him see there are steps he can take to pursue his dream without it turning into a financial nightmare for both of you.

Dear Motor Medics, I recently heard you talking about timing belts on your radio show and how everyone with a vehicle should find out if theirs is equipped with one and what the recommended service interval was. I asked my local shop if I had one and they said I do and in fact it was past due by almost 10,000 miles. My vehicle is a 2012 Honda Accord. I have owned it since new and have never had it changed to my knowledge unless it was part of some service package. Is a timing belt something I can do myself at home with basic hand tools? I have changed other belts. If I don’t do it the correct way can I damage something or can I just take it to a shop to have them finish it?

Before you start any home-project make sure you are very familiar and comfortable with the job ahead of you and follow all safety procedures. A timing belt is a job that requires very close attention to procedure. If the belt comes loose or is not installed correctly and the engine becomes out of time it can spell disaster for the engine.

It can even mean having to replace the engine in some cases. Study the job closely before attempting this one.

Burnhamville Township • December 28, 2021 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held December 28, 2021 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Vice-Chair Bruce Johnson. Members present include Supervisor Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener. Supervisors Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner were attending virtually.

The minutes from the regular meeting of November 30, 2021 were read by Sup. Johnson and approved on a motion by Sup. Muellner and second by Sup. Berscheit with Sup. Johnson also voting in favor. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received notices of March election information, and a liquor license application.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 6180 through 6188, pending receipt of the road maintenance bill: Rev. $992.38; R& B $6,530.15. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion with Sup. Berscheit also voted in favor. Motion passed.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion to approve the liquor license application for Feb. 26, 2022 Swanville Lions/Sobieski Lions Fishing Derby on Long Lake. Motion as seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Sup. Johnson also approved. Motion passed.

Sup. Berscheit informed the board the dealer for the skid steer trailer said the trailer

should be in the middle of January.

With the increase in registered voters to over 500 in Burnhamville Township this township is now required to use the OnmiBallot voting machine. Additional notice of Public Accuracy Testing will come later.

The township clerk applied for the weed control grant from the state. We will hear back later to see if we will be awarded the grant for weed control equipment.

One online meeting was held and another will be soon to advise townships on how to use ARPA funding. The clerk and at least one supervisor will try to listen in.

Filing for township offices for the March election is open now through January 11, 2022. Offices of one supervisor and the clerk are up for election.

Due to a death in the family, the road contractor was unable to be here.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $82,800.24. Sup. Johnson motioned to approve, Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion and Sup. Muellner also voting in favor. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Muellner to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:14 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, January 25 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

Gift Card Faud: Most Christmases the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office likes to identify a family or two that might need a little extra help around the holidays. It is just one way for Office members to give a little back to the community. This year, we chose two families. One family had four members and the other was a single person. Our members contributed $1800 to this effort which we divvied up 4/5 and 1/5. To make things easier, we just decided to go the gift card route. A couple of weeks after presenting the gift cards, we were contacted by the family of four.

They just wanted to let us know that when they went to use one of the gift cards that was supposed to have a $300 balance, there was only $24 and some change left on it. They were able to get a receipt from Walmart where the gift card was from that showed multiple purchases.

Oddly enough, these purchases had all been made before we even provided the cards to the family.

Deputy Adam Wood took the initial call and passed the information on to our investigators. Investigator Andrew Struffert took over the investigation from there. He was able to discern from the receipt where the “card had been used” and was able to obtain some video evidence, as well as good photos and was able to identify a probable suspect. With all the evidence and information gathered, he obtained a search warrant for a residence in the City of St. Cloud and executed it on January 21. While executing that search warrant, investigators were able to recover most of the items that had been

purchased using the gift card, as well as evidence of a broader fraud operation and the tools used to commit that fraud.

So, how did the culprits manage to do this without having the actual card in their possession? The Grinch in this case went into Walmart and took a bunch of gift cards.

He then removed the coating on the back, which exposed the last four digits of the card, along with the PIN number. He then used the Walmart Pay app and loaded up the card information. He then used the tools he had to reapply a sticker over the numbers on the back and put the cards back on the store hanger. He then waited for someone to purchase and activate the card, at which point he received a notification that funds are available on the Walmart Pay app and the “shopping” begins. Unfortunately, they are so good at reapplying the covering over the numbers on the back, that one would probably never know that they were once removed. Inv. Struffert also provided information on this scam to loss prevention at Walmart and to surrounding law enforcement agencies. There certainly is the possibility that more of these cases may come to light now. The case will be forwarded to the Stearns County Attorney’s Recovered and Altered Card Office for charging. We will also work with the family to get the money that they were defrauded out of, returned to them. I am not the only person to think this, but can you imagine what some of these folks could accomplish if they utilized this type of ingenuity for good?

The 2022 session of the Legislature opened this week, with the House of Representatives meeting virtually while the Senate is using a more hybrid-type format. The building where House members' offices are located, the State Office Building, is closed to the public, while the Capitol itself is open. All committee meetings of the House will be virtual, with the hope that if pandemic numbers begin to subside, restrictions will be loosened.

The topic on everyone's mind is the surplus, projected in November at $7.7 billion, but even higher now with additional revenues added the past few months. It's probably well north of $8 billion now. And the burning question becomes one of what to do with all this extra money.

To clarify, the surplus is the amount expected to be remaining at the end of the twoyear budget cycle on June 30, 2023. Much can happen between now and then, but based on current predictions, that's what should be left in state coffers 18 months from now if no changes in spending or revenue are made.

For the most part, Republicans feel the money should be returned to the people, mainly through tax credits and revisions to our tax code. There may be some additional expenditures, such as returning the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund to solvency from its current $1 billion deficit. But, for the most part, in some form, return the excess money.

The DFL, on the other hand, has a different idea. Gov. Tim Walz released his supplemental budget request last week and, under his plan, most of the surplus would be spent.

I'm not saying they aren't worthy requests, but this is not a budget year. An encouraging note is that there does seem to be bipartisan agreement on the issue of replenishing the unemployment trust fund.

One of the things we need to be careful of is using this one-time surplus windfall to fund programs that become permanent. If that happens, they become part of the base budget and would continue forward even after the surplus is used up. An example is the governor's request for an additional increase to the school funding formula. The budget passed last year already gave schools an additional 4.5 percent in state funding. The governor is asking for another 2.5 percent on top of that which, if approved, would become part of the base appropriation when the next two-year budget is worked on.

I've been in the Legislature long enough to have served during times of deficit and surplus. Both are challenging, with expectations totally different depending on which situation we are facing. That's human nature and totally to be expected. The Legislature and the governor need to look at the long-range picture and determine what's best, not only when there is extra revenue but also when times are more

in the future.

Other issues in the spotlight this session will be public safety and law enforcement.

Some see the need for additional police, while others want to see different methods explored.

We need to be careful when making changes in this area, because an idea thought to be necessary in the metro may not work or even be needed here in Greater Minnesota.

There will be work done in the area of cleaner fuels, including E-15 gasoline and a low carbon fuel standard. There needs to be work done to increase the availability of workers for jobs waiting to be filled. Related to that is the lack of childcare that keeps some parents home and out of the work force because they can't find places for their young children.

Our state and nation are also faced with supply-chain issues. One of the causes is a lack of truck drivers to move goods to where they are needed. The situation's not going to get any better because next Monday, Feb. 7, new rules take effect that relate to obtaining CDL drivers licenses. The federal government on that day will be implementing a new entry-level driver training requirement that could cost prospective new drivers an estimated $4,000-$5,000 dollars to complete. Don't think that's going to entice a lot of new drivers into that line of work.

Stolen Mail: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 1-31-2022 at approximately 10:38 a.m., their office received a report of mail that was possibly stolen and dumped at the Crow Wing Power Substation located four miles east of Little Falls, MN, off Hwy 27, in Little Falls Township. All the mail located came from the areas around Bear Road and Cottonwood Road, approximately five miles north of Cushing, MN in Scandia Valley Township.

Sheriff Larsen would like to remind residents of ways to protect themselves against mail theft.

• Mail your letters at the post office or hand them to a letter carrier when mailing items that may contain personal information or have monetary value, rather than placing them in your mailbox.

• Pick your mail up promptly after delivery.

Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight.

• Tell your post office when you will be out of town so they can hold your mail until you return.

Contact law enforcement immediately if you witness someone other than the mail carrier or postal worker, manipulating someone’s mail. If you do witness this type of activity, try to get a description of the person or the vehicle that they may be driving, as well as a plate number if possible.
