With so much focus on finding or keeping jobs in this economy, one significant employment factor seems to get moved down the pros and cons chart: What kind of boss will my next supervisor be?

Bosses know the importance of a good hire. Assuming the best candidate has accepted the offer, and has shown up on time for a few weeks, does the boss realize how critical retaining that new employee is? Does the boss know how to be a good boss?

Wooden shared his coaching philosophy that works just as well in business when it comes to mentoring employees: “A coach’s primary function should not be to make better players but to make better people. them get better. I want them to learn from my example, even when I am not directly mentoring them.

Of course, none of that happens unless I know how to come back revved up after a miserable day, demonstrate a stellar work ethic, and keep improving myself. What goes around comes around.

Study after study has concluded that the most important factor in job satisfaction is a positive work environment.

Praise is vital, and salary is important, but nothing ranks as high as loving what you do. Location matters, but people are willing to go great distances for a job that makes them happy. Titles aren’t even near the top of the list.

The determining factor is often closely related to the boss. A truly great boss will engender loyalty before any of those other factors will. A committed boss works hardest at positive leadership and a professional environment. A perceptive boss remembers her own early challenges and draws on those experiences. A responsible boss understands that mentoring his staff and helping them develop skills reflects positively on him.

Some months back, I wrote a column about the TV program “Undercover Boss.” I admire the bosses who concealed their identities and went to work on the front lines for some “realworld” lessons about their companies.

They were quite courageous to expose their own weaknesses on national television. But the exercise resulted in enhanced awareness of the importance of every single employee.

If all this sounds too overwhelming, step back and examine your motives.

Are you ready to let someone else have a share in the glory? Are you willing to listen to options? Are you threatened by others’ successes? Can you take responsibility for failure?

Upsala Area Schools to hold Kindergarten Roundup

Upsala Elementary School will be holding its annual Kindergarten Roundup on Friday, March 4, 2011. Registration for the class of 2024 will begin at 8:15 a.m. for all children who are interested in attending kindergarten at Upsala Elementary School starting in the fall of 2011. Parents should bring their child’s birth certificate and immunization record when they come on this day.

Kindergarten Roundup is for both parents and children and will run from 8:30-11:45 a.m. Parents and children

are also invited to stay for school lunch, which will be served at 11:15 a.m.

Obituaries Ervin J. Yunik

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Ervin Yunik, age 94 of Albany, was held Monday, January 31 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Ervin died January 27,

2011.

Ervin was born December 4, 1916 in Albany to Stan and Antonia (Hoffman) Yunik. He lived all of his life in the Albany area. He married Margaret Christen on January 28, 1950 in Albany. Ervin owned

Charles P. Burzlaff-Meyer and operated Nu-Way Cleaners in Albany for many years before he retired in 1984.

He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Albany Knights of Columbus.

Ervin is survived by his wife, Margaret Yunik, Albany; his daughters, Roslyn Yunik, New London; Anne (Kevin) Klem, Elk River; Jane (Dave) Plantenberg, St. Joseph; and Sarah (Bob) Laskowski, Foreston. He is also survived by his sisters, Esther (Warren) Schwindal, Cold Spring, Martha (Bob) Houck, Roseville, seven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Ervin is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Clara Theis and Stella Fleischman and his brother, Raymond Yunik.

Beatrice E. Kortenbusch Beatrice E. “Bede” Kortenbusch, age 90, of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial were held on Tuesday, February 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating.

Beatrice Elizabeth Zwack was born June 21, 1920 in Freeport to Frank and Agnes (Heine) Zwack. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Koch in June of 1945 in Freeport. He passed away in September of 1954. She married Albert Kortenbusch on June 11, 1957 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Bede was a loving mother and loved spending time with family especially, with her grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, visiting with people, and playing cards.

Her niece, Audrey and sister, Violetta

would come once a week to play cards with her.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Legion of Mary, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and St. Mary’s Mission Society.

She is survived by her son, Steven (Rita) Kortenbusch of Melrose; grandchildren, Bradley and Allison both at home; sister, Violetta Ramacher of Freeport; sister-in-law, Viola (Jim) Beutz of Freeport.

Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Lawrence Koch; second husband, Albert Kortenbusch on September 11, 1978; son, Mark Kortenbusch on August 15, 1984; brothers, Roman and Larry Zwack; sisters, Sally Elfering and Armella Wensman; brothersin-law, Elmer Elfering, Ralph Wensman, and Gabe Ramacher; sisters-in-law, Ann Zwack and Mary Moening Zwack.

Serving as casket bearers were Kenny Kortenbusch, Gary Ramacher, Tom Zwack, Tom Elfering, Tim Blaskowski, and Dan Carruth. Cross bearers were Allison and Bradley Kortenbusch. Scripture bearer was Sarah Nietfeld. Honorary bearers was the Legion of Mary, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, and St. Mary’s Mission Society.

Memorial s e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Charles P. “Chuck” Burzlaff-Meyer, age 52, were held on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Pastor Trisha Jorgenson officiated.

Chuck was born on February 18, 1958 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to John B. and Joyce (Nierenhausen) Meyer. He married Karla Burzlaff on January 18, 1992 in St. Cloud. He was employed with the Pipefitters Union Local #539. Chuck was a volunteer firefighter for St. Cloud Township for more than 20 years. He was also a reserve police

Patsye Jo Denne, age 67, of Grey Eagle, died from complications from surgery on Thursday, January 27, 2011 at the University of Minnesota Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 31 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

Raymond “Ray” Sobiech, 86 year old resident of Sobieski, MN passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at his home in Sobieski. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, January 31, 2011 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski with Father Leo Moenkedick officiating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Parish Cemetery.

Raymond “Ray” Sobiech was born on October 23, 1924 in Swan River Township to the late John & Rose Sobiech. He grew up in Swan River Township, Morrison County, Minnesota. Ray was united in marriage to Marie Barton on June 17, 1946 in Sobieski. They lived on the family farm until 1976 when they moved to Swanville Township. The couple were

Chuck enjoyed fishing, hunting, working with his hands, riding his Harley, and being the neighborhood go to guy if anyone needed help. He will be remembered as a great husband, father, son, brother and friend. He also was known for his generosity, pranks, sense of humor and his work ethic.

He is survived by his wife, Karla of Holdingford; children, John C. Meyer, Morgan and Ben Burzlaff-Meyer; father, John B. (Joanne) Meyer; siblings, Dale (Karole), David Herron (Heidi), Brian (Bernice), Jason, Jackie Hooper (Sam); and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother on May 29, 2000.

Triple “A” Nominees for Upsala Area Schools Local agriculture education opportunities

The Upsala High School Arts and Activities Committee is pleased to announce that Marjorie Schleper and Jacob Voss were nominated for the Minnesota State High School League’s Triple “A” Award. Triple “A”- Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award is a program to recognize high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in fine arts.

Jacob Voss is the son of Craig and Rosanne Voss. Jacob takes an active role in all aspects of school life. He was Upsala’s ExCEL nominee in 2009-2010.

He is currently the President of NHS, and is also the senior class president. He is a member of band Jacob Vos and participates in the fall play and spring musical. Jacob’s other extracurricular activities at UAS include football, basketball, and baseball.

Jacob also excels in the classroom.

He takes a large number of classes for college credit and is consistently on the Honor Roll. His favorite class is Physics because it’s not so much about getting the final answer but the process used to get there. It relates to everyday activities and it conceptually makes him understand.

Outside of school, Jacob enjoys playing volleyball, and his future plans include attending Gustavus Adolphus College. Mr. Capelle, Jacob’s science teacher and basketball coach states, “Jacob has excelled not only in the classroom but in athletics and the arts as well.

As a student/athlete he has given 100% in everything he does. His positive attitude and friendly personality will help him in the future.” Mr. Pahl, Jacob’s principal made the following comments about him, “Jacob is everything you could want in a student. He works extremely hard, is positive about everything he does, is involved both within the school and community, and has outstanding character. Jacob is a great nom-

Marjorie Schleper is the daughter of Mark and Gretchen Schleper.

Marjorie is a natural leader. She has a positive attitude, outgoing personality, and is willing to help with almost anything.

She is not afraid to step up and take charge when Marjorie Schleper others hesitate to do so. Marjorie is Vice President of the Upsala chapter of Future Farmers of America. She’s also the Region II FFA Reporter, Senior Class Vice President, and National Honor Society Vice President.

Marjorie excels in the classroom.

She is always on the A-Honor Roll and has been selected as Student of the Month more than once. At Upsala, Marjorie is involved with band, pep band, the spring musical, and softball. During her spare time Marjorie enjoys reading, cooking, hanging out with friends, horseback riding and camping. On top of this she runs her own horse training business. Marjorie’s favorite class at UAS is Calculus because she enjoys the challenge. She feels her most valuable activity is FFA because of the life skills she has learned and opportunity she has to be a positive influence on others.

One of Marjorie’s teachers stated, “Marjorie is a very intelligent, hardworking student who is a joy to have in class.

She always completes her homework and will always take time to help her classmates if they are stuck. Her positive, fun attitude is really what sets her apart from others. She will always come into the classroom with a smile and will do her best to make the class fun. Because of these qualities other students see Marjorie as a true leader. She is always helpful and patient and never puts anybody down for any reason. She makes learning and teaching here at UAS more fun!” In the future Marjorie plans to go to the U of M for Veterinary Medicine. Congratulations Marjorie.

January 27, 2010: Between January 15, 2011 and January 27, 2010, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office has taken approximately 15 reports of fish house burglaries. These incidents have occurred on Lake Latimer in Round Prairie Twp., Long Lake in Burnhamville Twp., Sauk Lake in Kandota Twp., and Maple Lake in Little Sauk Twp. In the majority of these incidents, only smaller items were reported missing, mainly alcohol. Some of the complainants did report fishing equipment missing. Forced entry occurred on most of these cases.

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office advises people not to leave any items of value in the fish house and leave the doors unlocked. If anyone has information on possible suspect(s) in these incidents, they are urged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

January 27, 2010: Several people are reporting that their fish houses are being broke into late at night in the “Crappie Town” area of Sauk Lake by Diamond Point in Todd County. Anyone with information is asked to call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

The Great Valentine’s Day Lapazoo! -By Saralee Perel I was my mother’s Valentine. And she was mine.

I’m hoping maybe others can experience the joy I did, with their daughters, mothers, or anyone at all.

Dad gave Mom roses. She loved that.

Then one year he didn’t and never did again.

He was a despondent man. Their marriage wasn’t so great. Mom would voice her anger. Dad kept his in. But it had to manifest somehow. So he no longer did nice things for her.

I couldn’t stand seeing my mother unhappy on Valentine’s Day, so I made her my Valentine. I gave her lace-trimmed cards and candy. These easy gestures meant the world to her, as they symbolized I loved her.

You can probably guess she needed that.

She’d get me Valentine’s gifts. But the show-stopper was when she put together a, “Come as a Flapper” Valentine’s Day party when I was a little girl.

Fifteen girlfriends came, all in hyper manic Roaring 20’s flapper and gangster

mode. Mom decorated our dining room with cardboard cherubs, feather boas and heartcovered place settings. I nicknamed our rooms according to the color of the walls.

This one had panels of walnut.

We were Jewish so the food was kosher – but flapper style. Using red food coloring, Mom made thin bagels topped with candy sequins and served them as Yiddish garters.

Her mini-Reuben sandwiches were called Bugsy Siegel sandwiches. She only approved of Jewish gangsters’ names. My brother said he was Al Capone. She said, “You’re Meyer Lansky.” The food was under a banner that read, “Shoot first. Ask questions later.” Mom had a thing for gunmen. The party favors were chocolate cigars and, fitting with Mom’s fetish, miniature toy Tommy guns.

We shimmied and we boogied all night long. Man – we must have danced until 9! I re-lived those moments today as I sang the very same song that we danced to at full volume on the record player that wondrous night.

Man, I’m tellin’ you, it’s a lapazoo!

Mom could surely kick up her heels when she was happy. I remember Dad wasn’t at the party at first. Ever the selfnominated family problem solver, I left my party to find my father. As usual, he was alone in his den, smoking his pipe.

“Won’t you come dance the Charleston with me?” I asked. Holding hands, we walked to the party room. Dad could be wonderfully goofy. He put a red feather boa around his neck and danced with me.

He had one hand on his hip and the other pointing way up, making silly circles with his forefinger to the rhythm of the music.

a beat other than to pull up their mothers’ black fishnet stockings that kept dropping to their ankles. Bangle bracelets clinked.

Elbow length gloves were tossed high in the air.

Neither of my parents noticed, as I slowly danced with Dad toward Mom. She was showing fancy Charleston moves that the girls were trying to imitate. She didn’t see how close Dad and I were to her. If I wasn’t in the picture, it would have appeared they were dancing together.

So I slowly backed away.

Then I stopped and stood motionless as I watched my parents dancing together for the first time in my life.

And that was the very best part of the great, “Come as a Flapper” Valentine’s Day party, held in 1960, in the “Walnut Room” when I was only nine.

The Spring Chicks and Rooster dancers are Joni Brickweg, Wally Jacobson, Bernie Pintok, Dora Kollodge, Irene Schmidt, Emily Rudnicki and Donna Nentl.

January 20, 2100, was a very cold, winter day outside, but warm and inviting inside at the Helping Hands luncheon where the “Spring Chicks and a Rooster” were line dancing. All present at the luncheon were treated to the Electric Slide and the Southside Shuffle, among other dances. I caught myself toe-tapping to the music while they dance. They were fun to watch and did a great job. Thanks dancers! They learned their routine at the weekly exercise class held every Wednesday morning at 9:15 at the Holdingford City Center led by Helping Hands. They had many positive comments about the class and the dancing. The biggest plus was much improved balance. Also great exercise, learning new steps keeps the brain challenged, getting out among friends and

just plain having fun. They encourage folks to give it a try and join them. The “Rooster”, the only man in the dance group says he enjoys dancing with all the girls. The line dancers led the rest of the group to do the Hokey Pokey (we need practice). After all that dancing the bingo cards were distributed and that fun began.

Jenny Minette, RN a representative from Country Manor Campus in Sartell was present to offer Blood pressure checks and answer any questions about Home Health Care. All afternoon prizes were given out. There was beautiful hand made items donated for prizes.

Thank you to anyone who generously donates anything for the monthly luncheons, it’s much appreciated. A hearty meal of soup and sandwiches sent folk’s home content and happy.

Competition was fierce for the Friday, January 7th Upsala Geography Bee. The bee was held for students in grades 4-8. All students took a test to qualify.

The top 25 students determined from those tests advanced to the

school competition.

Aaron Peterson, an eighth grader, won the UAS annual Geography Bee. Aaron has taken a written exam to possibly qualify for the state competition.

The winner of the state competition will go on to compete in the National Geographic Bee competition in Washington D.C. hosted by Alex Trebeck of Jeopardy. The winner of the National Geographic Bee will earn a $25,000 college scholarship.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Recent word of a positive test for Chronic Wasting Disease in a deer taken in the southeastern part of the state has Minnesota’s one-half million deer hunters on edge. “This is serious,” commented Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources Committee chairman Denny McNamara. “It’s very troubling for Minnesota’s deer hunters.”

The positive test came from the Pine Island area, near Rochester. The deer was taken by a hunter last fall near where a fairly large, captive elk herd had recently been destroyed because four of its animals had been found to have the disease.

Dr. Lou Cornicelli, big game program coordinator for the DNR, in testimony before the committee Jan. 20 said that his department is “gearing up quick-

ly” in response to the positive test. He added, “Hopefully, we caught this early and can keep it from spreading.”

The DNR is in the process of taking aerial surveys to determine the size of the deer population in that area. Then they will contact area landowners to determine how best to thin out the deer herd in the area and test those animals to find out if more are affected. Among the possibilities are a late-season public hunt, landowner shooting permits, and sharpshooting.

Chronic Wasting Disease is a slowly progressive brain disorder that affects deer, moose, and elk. There is no treatment and it’s always fatal to those animals that contract the disease. CWD has shown no evidence that it can be transferred to either cattle or humans.

Something new is being tried this year by legislators who hail from rural Minnesota. A “Greater Minnesota Caucus” has been organized, and we are meeting weekly to hear about common concerns and discuss issues affecting out-state Minnesota. It seems to me that sometimes the urban-rural split is more

This past week we heard from Brad Finstad, who represents the Center for Rural Policy and Development, which is based in St. Peter. Started in 1997, the Center came together as a rural “think tank” to provide policy makers and concerned citizens an objective and unbiased look at contemporary rural issues.

The Center’s board of directors come from all across the state and represent a variety of interests. Fifteen are appointed by the Governor and another five are nominated by the directors themselves.

Finstad had statistics that showed five of the seven regions of the state grew in population between the years 1960 through 2009. The metroplex area saw the largest growth rate (95 percent) while the southwest cornbelt saw the largest decline (26 percent). The central

lakes area of Minnesota also had a substantial increase in population (45 percent), while the other area that lost numbers was the north range area (1 percent decline).

Looking ahead through the year 2035, the central lakes area and the metroplex are expected to show nearly identical growth rates near 26 percent.

The northwest valley area is projected to grow by 16 percent and the southeast river valley by 13 percent. The only area expected to see a net loss of population is the southwest cornbelt by .4 percent.

Over-all, the state’s population is projected to grow 22 percent in the next 25 years.

Pelican Lake Association to hold upcoming Fund Raiser, Feb. 4 Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna will be hosting a Fundraiser Dinner on February 4 starting at 6:00 p.m. at The Landing, St. Anna.

Members have accomplished many things. Starting out in January 2010 they were successful applicants of the Initiative Foundation Healthy Lakes and Rivers Program (HLRP) in which they partnered with the DNR, Stearns County Environmental Services, and the Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District. They held a community visioning meeting facilitated by MN Waters and compiled the results of that meeting into part of their new Lake Management Plan. They have successfully written and got approved a new plan to guide them as they correct problems for Pelican Lake.

The following is a partial list of the projects that have been implemented by the Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna: • Public Access Improvements • Partnered with Scouts to build Loon nest platforms.

• Sponsored Ben Eli who so successfully achieved his Eagle Scout status as a result of the rearing pond project.

• Partnered with landowners that put land aside and planted native grasses to improve bird habitat.

• Fundraiser Dinners • Wrote and implement a Lake Management Plan • Rented acres of land near an inlet to the lake for buffer.

• Restored wetland • Wrote and implement a Lake Vegetation Plan • We help landowners that want to put in buffers or sediment ponds along or near an inlet to Pelican Lake.

• Water Monitoring and record data to MPCA • Secchi Disk Readings for MPCA • Lake Level Readings for DNR • Kids Fishing Day • Educational Meetings • Paid to do an aerial flyover of the Pelican Lake watershed to identify any sources of nutrient loading into Pelican Lake.

• Paid for a written analysis and extensive photos and reports of the data from the flyover which included locations of possible non point source nutrient loading from certain watershed areas to the lake.

• Hired a firm to do a Point Intercept Grid Study identifying every weed in Pelican Lake and the location of each.

• Partnered with Sea Grant in identi-

fying the Aquatic Invasive species of snail that got into Pelican Lake by someone either releasing it into the water or it being transported into the Lake because it is not native to this area.

• Assist Landowners that want to do a conservation project.

• Assist members that wish to do any type of native plants on their shoreland property.

• Planting Fish • Pay for the DNR Permits every year for $750.00 to allow to treat the lake for swimmers itch and algae.

• Pay Lake Restorations to treat for Swimmers Itch and algae Pelican Lake has such clear water that when the sun penetrates through the water to any nutrients settled at the bottom it causes accelerated weed growth and algae to form.

The Pelican Lake Association has taken many steps to stop the run off from entering the Lake from the watershed. However this is an ongoing process. Much work is still needed near the inlets.

Without the donations and assistance that we get from the area Businesses and our Membership we would not be able to accomplish all the great things we do, we rely on donations from partners such as Stearns Bank and Insurance, Avon State Bank, Columbia Gear, My Salon Hair Design, The Landing, Pelican Lake Ballroom, The Store, Headley Hardware, St. Johns and Saint Benedicts College, Avon Liquor Locker, Stearns County Soil and Water Conservation District, DNR, Star Lake Program, Avon Sportsmans Club, Bernicks, MN Waters, Initiative Foundation, and numerous others.

The Pelican Lake Association of St. Anna is very proud of the partnerships they have with the Holdingford Sno Flyers Club, Avon Sportsmans Club. Holdingford Sportsmans Club and St. Anna Sportsmans for together they have supported each other’s programs and will continue to work together in the future towards improving the lakes fisheries balance and protecting those resources for many years to come.

Pelican Lake in St. Anna is the First Star Lake of Stearns County and won the Lake Association of the year award in 2009 from MN Waters.

Together we can accomplish so much more than alone. We hope to see everyone at our Fundraiser Dinner event on Feb. 4th for an evening of good food and chances to win some nice prizes.

Mother of Mercy Foundation of Albany, Minnesota, held its annual meeting on January 18, 2011. Chuck Griffith, Pastor Brad Pearson, and Mark Knapp were seated as newly appointed members of the Board of Directors.

Helping Hands Outreach Upcoming Events

Helping Hands Outreach in Holdingford will sponsor the upcoming events in February. February 9 will be our monthly shopping trip to anyone who would like a ride into St. Cloud for appointments, to pick up things or just do some shopping.

February 10th is our monthly community luncheon at 2:00 p.m. at the Holdingford Legion. Information on getting yourself or a loved one on the Lifeline Program, entertainment by Terry Nelson, and a delicious lunch served. We will have a Hawaiian theme, so put on your hula skirt and leis’, bring a friend or two and join us for a few hours of fun.

The Mystery Lunch Bunch will again be going to an undisclosed location for lunch and a time to visit with friends and to make new ones.
