Optimism is sunshine for the soul -By Harvey Mackay Joe, a golfer, joined three people at a golf course to make up the foursome.

The three friends teed off, but when Joe hit his first shot, it went directly into the trees. The trio suggested he play a second ball in case he couldn’t find his first one, but Joe shrugged them off and went out to search for his ball.

After 10 minutes, Joe couldn’t find his ball, but he insisted on looking some more. Finally one of the other golfers said, “Joe, we’re holding everyone up.

Why don’t you just drop another ball and take a penalty stroke?”

“Where are you going?” the other golfers asked.

“I have to buy another ball.”

If you’ve ever played golf, you know Joe had a case of misguided optimism. But I give him a lot of credit for believing in his ability. Even the most optimistic golfers carry a few extra balls, just in case.

As Winston Churchill said, “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

I’ll take optimism over pessimism every day of the week. I’ve discovered that it’s just as easy to look for the good things in life as the bad. If you look at the bright side of life you will never develop eyestrain. In other words, thinking positive has no negative.

When I am hiring – especially for sales – I seek out optimists. Why? A pessimist has no starter; an optimist has no brakes.

American psychologist Martin Seligman, working at the University of Pennsylvania at the time, studied the sales prowess of optimists and equally talented pessimists.

Metropolitan Life developed a test called the Seligman Attributional Style

Questionnaire to sort the optimists from the pessimists when hiring sales personnel. Seligman found that optimists outsold pessimists by 20 percent the first year and by 50 percent the following year.

In his book, “Learned Optimism,” Seligman lists many studies that report optimists are: healthier; less likely to give up; more successful in school, on the job and on the playing field; have more successful relationships; and are depressed less often, and for shorter periods of time.

Mary Kay Mueller in her book, “Taking Care of Me: The Habits of Happiness,” shows how optimism is the best policy. How you look at life can drastically affect how much you enjoy your life. If you have a positive attitude, then you will be considered an optimistic person. If you have a negative attitude, then you will be considered a pessimistic person. Optimists expect the best out of life. Mueller believes an optimistic attitude can be learned, as do I. She lists the tenets that optimism is based on: • Bad things do happen in life, but they are temporary.

• Bad things in life are limited in scope. (They’re small or insignificant.)

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Altricter I frequently have difficulty finding new ideas to include in my stories. Recently, I read a story about a character from the 1880’s in an old Todd County History Book.

The story was about a fellow named Altricter, who was small in stature, but big in ambition, skill and daring. As a young man, he built his own log home in central Todd County accompanied by using his skills as a very accomplished wildlife hunter, to provide meat for sale and help to supply food for needy neighbors.

The following years found him working in North Dakota to harvest fields during the Summer Season and logging employment during the winter.

He soon became known for his skills in the logging industry.

One spring the largest log drive ever sent down the Mississippi River became stuck near Fort Ripley. A log became stuck on a large river rock followed by most of the rest of the log flotation getting stuck behind the jammed logs in front of them. The pile of jammed logs grew to a height “higher than a house.”

The jam caused the water to back up and flood the settlers farms along the River. The boss decided that the logs had to move, so, Altricter and 4 oarsmen moved a boat to the bottom of the jam to look over the situation. Anyone below the log jam would be in extreme danger if the jam let loose. After inspection, it was determined that they found the single log, which would release the log jam. The boss said he couldn’t move as fast as Altricter, so he headed to the boat, leaving Altricter with an ax to attempt to

get the key log to release. The key log was bent like a willow twig. One swing of the ax caused the key log to break, creating a sound like shooting a big gun.

Altricter got back to the boat faster than the boss. They both hastily climbed into the boat and they all got out of the river as fast as possible. The jam broke up, the logs quickly traveled downriver, being pushed by lots of backed up water and those in the boat were very happy to not be in the river ahead of all those logs.

After returning to his home, Altricter decided to go to the village of Pillsbury to pick up some supplies. The general store owner asked him why he no longer hunted. He replied that he didn’t hunt, because he didn’t have a gun. The owner said that he would order him a gun and he would extend credit to him based upon he bringing in harvested wildlife to pay for the gun. The gun arrived and that evening, when he was heading home, he thought he saw a deer on a ridge. He shot, but didn’t follow it because it was getting dark. The next morning he went to find his wounded deer, dispatched and dressed it and hung it up. Just as he was finishing, a deer stepped out from behind a tree and he got that one too.

While he was dressing that one, three deer approached and he shot them.

The gunfire created curiosity from two individuals he knew, who came over to help him dress the three deer. He offered them some meat, which they refused, saying that they would later get their own deer. He asked them to go around a hill on their way and they chased 5 more deer his way and he promptly shot them. His friends returned to see what had happened and when they saw the 5 deer, they told him that they wouldn’t help this time.

He then got his team and sled, loaded the deer on the sled and took them to the Pillsbury Store. The store owner was very happy to buy the deer, since he had been getting requests for

Optimists help create some of the good they come to expect, so they are probably right more than not – and they don’t waste time worrying about what they’re not right about.

Oscar Wilde broke it down to this: “The optimist sees the donut, the pessimist sees the hole.”

This story is a perfect illustration.

David and Steve were friends, but they could never quite agree on anything. “Your problem is you’re a pessimist,” David said one day when they were fishing. “You can’t see the bright side of anything!”

“Oh yeah?” Steve asked. “Prove it!”

fetch me a can of beer!”

Spot carefully climbed over the edge of the boat. Then, miraculously, he simply walked across the surface of the water, opened the friends’ beer cooler with his snout, and carried a can of beer back in his teeth – all without getting wet.

“Now what do you say about that?”

David asked.

Steve shook his head. “A dog that smart, and he can’t even swim.”

Mackay’s Moral: Optimists don’t care whether the glass is half-full or half-empty – they know they can refill the glass!

Ervin J. Klaphake, age 92 of Melrose, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, February 28 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Ervin Joseph Klaphake was born March 29, 1926 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Henry and Margaret (Wiebolt) Klaphake. He attended St. Boniface Catholic School in Melrose.

On August 30, 1949 he was united in marriage to Virginia Stueve at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Ervin was a progressive, life long dairy and turkey farmer who farmed south of Melrose.

Ervin’s faith was very important to him. He prayed the rosary daily and was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1633 since 1948.

Ervin enjoyed listening and dancing to old time music. He and Virginia rarely missed a Sunday of dancing in Spring Hill.

Ervin was preceded in death by his parents; son, Daniel Klaphake on July 10, 1972; great-grandson, Jack Klaphake; sisters and brother, Winifred Maus, Evangeline Hartung, and Anthony Klaphake.

Serving as casket bearers will be Andrew Klaphake, Aaron Klaphake, Nicholas Klaphake, Jonathan Klaphake, Ethan Klaphake, Emmett Klaphake, Joshua Klaphake, and Zachary Klaphake. Mary Jane (Brooks) Deters Mary Jane (Brooks) Deters, a loving and devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, age 72 of Little Falls, formerly of Sauk Centre, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at the Little Falls Care Center in Little Falls, Minnesota, with her family by her side.

A gathering of friends and family was held Sunday, February 24 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with a service being held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary was born on March 23, 1946 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to the late Harold and Rosalia “Rose” Brooks. As a small child, she lived in Round Prairie. She then moved with her family to South Dakota and eventually to the Grand Meadow, Iowa area. Mary attended grade school at Grand Meadow and high school at Marcus Community High School, graduating in 1964.

Mary moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota shortly after graduation to attend the Minnesota School of Business. While attending school, she worked part time at First National Bank. In 1966, she moved

back to Marcus, Iowa and found employment at Western Cherokee Mutual Insurance. She also found time to spend with her nephew and niece whom they would refer to Mary as “Aunt Murn.”

She also lived in Little Sauk with her aunt. She became employed at Independent Bankers in Sauk Centre and moved there in 1971. While working at Independent Bankers, she also worked at the Airway Supper Club and the Red Carpet as a waitress. While working at one of her second jobs, she also found employment at HEI incorporated. Her final job was a job that truly showed Mary’s love, kindness, and compassion for others and that was caring for the mentally handicap at Koelln Homes.

This job meant everything to Mary.

Mary met her husband, James Deters and was married on October 26, 1973.

The couple later divorced by Mary was blessed with three wonderful daughters who meant the world to her. Mary is going to be remembered as “Big Momma” as she would dress up in a silly costume for family get togethers. She will also be remembered for telling you something was ugly, that meant that she liked it and wanted it. That was discovered on a shopping trip with her friend when she was shown something.

Mary said it was ugly and her friend put it back on the rack, only later to find in back in Mary’s cart!

Mary is survived by her children, Lori Rodeski (Tony Eley) of Little Falls, Donna (Dan) Geisenhof of Little Falls, and Shelly Witt of Osakis; former husband, James Deters of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Michael, Alexis, and Jerrald Witt, Dominick Geisenhof, and Mackenzie and Tyler Rodeski; adopted granddaughter, Jenna Shaffer; sister, Bonnie (Fred) Wilkens of Marcus, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Michael Brooks, Sr.; and aunts and uncles.

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.

Mary has become a treasure to all who were fortunate to have known her and have her in their life.

in Eyota, Minnesota and met Gerald who was the local veterinarian. They were united in marriage on April 14, 1966 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Eyota.

After 15 years in Eyota, the couple moved to Melrose where Betty was an active member of the Melrose Ambulance Corp and for several years was coordinator.

Betty enjoyed art, coloring group, and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Lahmers of Melrose; children, Robert Lahmers of Zimmerman, Victoria Gerads of Champlin, and Eric Lahmers of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren, Maya and Maxwell Gerads, and Leah Lahmers; sisters, Edythe Brown and Dianne Jackola; half-sister, Joanna Rorwick; and half-brother, William Moren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents.

The family requests that if you have something purple to wear for the memorial service, please wear it in honor of Betty.

Constance “Connie” H. Jopp Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM Friday, March 1, 2019 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Avon for Constance “Connie” H. Jopp, 63 of Avon who passed away at home on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

Connie’s godson, Rev. Aaron Nett will officiate. Burial will be held at the St. Benedict Parish Cemetery.

Parish Prayers will be held at 4 PM, with visitation to follow until 8 PM on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at the Church and 9 AM on Friday.

Connie was born November 29, 1955 to Jerome and Lorraine (Korte) Blonigen in Saint Cloud. She married Thomas Jopp on November 14, 1981 in Saint Cloud and lived in Avon for 34 years. Connie worked for the St. Cloud School District as a Food Service Director before retiring in August of

2018. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, previously was a member of the Church board, and was a member of Christian Mothers. Connie enjoyed working on puzzles, volunteering for Treasure Chest, gardening, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. She loved to cook and was famous for her meatballs and homemade soups. Connie was a very loving, caring, warm hearted and selfless person that will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include husband, Thomas Jopp of Avon; sons, Mitchell (Breanna Hanan) Jopp of Avon and Nathan (Camryn) Jopp of Sartell; grandchildren, Talen Reed, Holden Jopp and Huxley Jopp; siblings, Beverly Nett of Avon, Fred (Julie) Blonigen of St. Cloud, Diane (Jim) Stadelman of Inver Grove Heights, Jean (Mike) Warren of Apple Valley, Mark (Penny) Blonigen of Fargo, Michelle (Ross) Kirgiss of Maple Grove; nieces; nephews; step-siblings (Burggraff); and extended family.

She is preceded in death by her parents; infant sister, Mary; brother in-law, Edwin Nett and stepfather Charlie Burggraff.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m.

Saturday, March 2 at the PattonSchad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

James J. Theiler

James J. Theiler, age 66 of Eagle Bend, MN and formerly of Melrose, MN died unexpectedly on Thursday, February 21, 2019.

Jim was working as a semi-truck driver and suffered from a cardiac arrest while he was stopped in Miles

City, Montana.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1st at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment with military honors will be held at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

James Joseph Theiler was born November 28, 1952 in Melrose, Minnesota to Clarence Alfred and Bernice Marie (Bussmann) Theiler. Jim grew up near Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School in 1971. In 1972, Jim joined the US Army and proudly served his country until August 29, 1974. After his military service, Jim held various jobs including farming and construction before finding his passion of being an owner/operator Over-the-Road Truck Driver. In 1999, Jim moved to Eagle Bend, Minnesota and found a place to live that had a large enough building to garage his semi-truck.

He enjoyed hunting, collecting old John Deere tractors, fishing, playing cards, collecting coins, playing BINGO, gardening and establishing a beautiful rose garden at his home. He enjoyed making friends and a frequent “Happy Hour Visitor!” While in Eagle Bend, Jim became very involved in the VFW and American Legion.

Survivors include Kay Alexander of Eagle Bend and her children, Bambi of Sauk Centre, Dustin (Allison) of Forada; Jesse of Eagle Bend and Amber of Eagle Bend; grandchildren, Alexis and Austin; twin great grandsons, Keaton and Karson; sisters and brothers, Audrey Florek of Radcliff, KY, Alice (Danny) Hanson of Long Prairie, Kathy (Ken) Lemm of New Munich, Mary (Don “Duck”) VanHeel of St. Joseph, Marlene (Mickey) Pflipsen of Melrose, Joe (Julie) Theiler of Melrose, Dave (Bonnie) Theiler of Melrose, Dale Theiler of Long Prairie, and Lori Buttweiler of Woodbury; sister-in-law, Donna Theiler of Melrose; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Bernice Theiler; brother, Eugene Theiler; and nephew, Ryan Pflipsen.

Serving as casket bearers will be Chris Theiler, Dustin Alexander, Brad Lemm, Jordan VanHeel, Bill Pflipsen, Jeron Theiler, Jesse Theiler, and Tyler Buttweiler. Cross bearer will be Angel Schad and Scripture bearer will be Donte Theiler. Lectors will Carrie Pyle, Jenny Tomford, and Lakeisha Buttweiler and gift bearers will be David Theiler, Dale Theiler, and Joe Theiler.

Ellen W. James

Ellen James, 91 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the Assumption Nursing Home in Cold Spring, MN. A funeral service will held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, March 1, 2019 at the Community Country Church in Holdingford, MN with Rev. Joshua Koehn officiating. Burial will take place in the South Elmdale Congregational Church Cemetery.

A visitation will be held from 12-2 P.M. on Friday at the Community Country Church in Holdingford, MN. Ellen May Wilcox was the firstborn child of Maurice and Lois Wilcox in Westerly, Rhode Island on March 25, 1927.

Ellen was married to Jesse W. James on May 29, 1954 at East Principle Baptist Church in Wyoming, Rhode Island. She partnered with Jesse in his ministerial work until his passing.

Their ministry took them to 18 different churches in 8 different states. She learned to adapt to a wide variety of houses, and became very good at packing their meager possessions. No matter the circumstance or situation, she always had the gift of making the family’s parsonage housing a true home.

She was frequently the organist, pianist, and Sunday school teacher, in addition to raising their family. She often provided piano accompaniment when Jesse would sing. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. After her children had grown, she also worked at a bakery, and did tax preparation for H & R Block. Ellen was an intelligent, thoughtful, quiet, and reserved woman. She was a vital, often unseen part of their ministry together.

After Jesse passed away in 2010, and due to declining health, she moved to Riverside Assisted Living in Royalton. After a further decline in health, she moved to Assumption Home in Cold Spring. She was very proud of her beloved grandchildren, and especially proud of her great-grandchildren. Her quiet, strong faith sustained her all her life.

Ellen is survived by her children, Esther (Mark) Koehn of Holdingford, MN and Timothy (Marli) James of Williamsburg, VA; step-son, Kelsey James of Lawrence, KS; grandchildren, Stewart James, Wesley James, Kandria James, Jessica (Andy) Kuhn, Joshua (Kristina) Koehn, Jacob (Amber) Koehn, Jessica Lapham, Kenneth (Hannah) James and Rebecca James; great-grandchildren, Cecilia, Wesley, Jack, Thomas, Clara, Theodore, Landen and Penelope.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Jesse; parents, Maurice and Lois Wilcox; brothers, Lester, James and Edgar; great-granddaughter, Crystina.

“Be careful what you wish for - it just might come true!” is a saying most of us have grown up with. It comes with no guarantee or assurance that what we ask for is what we will get. In fact, according to some, it may be the exact opposite and result in problems.

Wishing is imagining something in our minds that we want to come true believing that our lives will be better or filled with happiness or joy or riches. It is wanting our lives to be more fulfilling or better or happier without our having to do anything or making any effort or changes.

But wishing is different from hop-

ing - especially the hope that believers have in God. We can have unflinching and unwavering hope in God because He has done everything He has ever said He would do. There is no room for any doubt in Him or any of His promises. They are well documented and are a testimony to the fact that God is faithful and can be trusted to keep His Word.

God’s faithfulness, the psalmist reminds us, is so predictable that it has become “a law in Israel.” And this testimony of God’s faithfulness is to be passed on by fathers to their children so they put their hope in God and “never forget His deeds.”

God wants fathers to teach their children that hope does not come from politicians or policies. Dear Motor Medics, I have a 1994 Stealth RT without the turbocharged engine. I have gone through 2 new batteries in a short period of time. Is it possible that a failing alternator can ruin a battery? If so I would like to know if there is a way to check if the alternator has actually failed. Are there specific testing methods that can be used to narrow the cause down? I listen to your show faithfully. Thanks for your time.

-Karen in Fargo Dear Karen, A failing alternator can ruin a battery in a short period of time. If it’s overcharging or is draining current when off it will discharge the battery after it sits for extended periods. Even if it does not sit long enough to run completely down it can cause the battery to fail due to its heavy discharge/charge cycles.

To check the alternator you need to have a charging system analysis done with a charging system tester. This will show the internal operation of the alternator, diodes, field, and ability to charge at idle and at higher rpm but will not show a drain. To find a drain they will need to perform is a current drain test.

Most shops with this type of tool will also have an electronic battery testing tool. It is possible that you have had a run of bad luck with two bad batteries.

It has happened to us in our shop before.

My question is what should I be doing to give me the best chance at preventing this from happening to my engine? I drive the truck only a few miles to work every day and change the oil about every four months.

-Dean in Moberly Missouri Dear Dean, The 5.4 has been used is hundreds of thousands of Fords without issue but a few have been known to develop issues with the cam phasers or lose just a bit of oil pressure which keeps the phasers from operating properly. Repairs involve phaser replacement or sometimes an entire engine. The best way to prevent this from happening is with routine oil changes. Ford recommends using their factory specified oil or something of better ratings and a Ford genuine filter.

There are copies of this filter on the market so make sure you are getting the genuine Ford product. As for time intervals we would suggest changing the oil at three months. The short trips are harder on the oil and engine as the engine does not get up to operating temperature for a long enough period to completely burn off all traces of moisture in the oil which can result in sludge in the engine.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 8th day of January 2019 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Wendell Asmus, Kevin Bitz, Nancy Bitz, Carolyn Ilgen and Chris Browen.

Members of St. John’s Church were in attendance to discuss selling the parsonage. Currently all four parcels belonging to St. John’s are combined into one parcel number. The parsonage is located on lots 1 and 2 and the church is located on lots 9 and 10. Based on information from the City Attorney, if the church sells the parsonage on lots 1 and 2 as they were originally platted, then the council could approve an Administrative Split. If the church wishes to subdivide lots 1 and 2, then the split would be subject to the subdivision process as set forth in city ordinance. The parsonage property has been surveyed and this information will be submitted to the City Attorney for review to see if this would satisfy the subdivision requirements.

Complaints have been received of a dog that has been allowed to run loose. The clerk was instructed to send a letter to the owner, reminding them that dogs are not allowed to roam free.

Storage for city records was discussed. Space in the old city hall has been converted and records will be moved as time allows.

The Mayor updated the council on a meeting with the Grey Eagle Industrial Development Corporation where they are looking in to affordable housing in the community.

The Clerk was instructed to proceed with delinquent utilities as allowed by ordinance.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $750.67 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $148.12 from the General Fund of which $31.12 goes to the Water Fund and $117 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall, Library and old City Hall utilities. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include payment for the following additional items: $7,600 to Midwest Machinery, $133.63 to First State Bank of Swanville and $2,145.63 to Minnesota Power. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Gov’s 70-percent increase to gas tax draws attention

Many who were expecting Gov. Walz to call for a 10-cent increase in the state’s gas tax were a bit surprised at his announcement of a three-legged approach to increasing the state’s transportation funding. Not only did the governor call for a 20-cent increase to the already 28.5 cents per gallon we already pay, he also advocated for an increase in license tab fees along with an bump in the sales tax we pay when buying a vehicle. Under the governor’s plan, the tax on car sales would increase from its current 6.5 percent up to the full rate which includes the Legacy Amendment addition. That would push the sales tax bite on vehicle purchases up to 6.875 percent.

The 70-percent jump in the gas tax is what garnered the most attention. It would put us on a fast track to moving up and having the fourth-highest gas tax in the nation. We are currently pretty well aligned with our neighboring states on the gas tax, but imagine what that kind of increase would do to buying habits in cities close to our borders. We have all been known to search high and low in an effort to save a penny or two on gas. A 20-cent difference across the river, for example, would be a very difficult thing for Min-

nesota stations to compete against. Our cigarette taxes already drive smokers across the border, and this would greatly amplify the retail pricing difference and, once again, make our state much less competitive.

In total, the governor’s budget proposal would increase taxes on Minnesotans by $3 billion. All that, despite having a fairly healthy surplus. We’ll find out more this week about our actual financial situation when the all-important February forecast is released. It was hoped that the surplus could be used to fund some of the increased spending proposals, in addition to providing badly needed tax relief. Now, some of the tax provisions Minnesotans want, such as Section 179 expensing and additional relief on school capital referendums, are not the sure things we envisioned just several weeks ago.

On another topic important to all residents, Gov. Walz indicated his support for a 20-percent subsidy for those buying health insurance on the individual market. However, he would eliminate our current reinsurance program, which has stabilized and actually lowered premiums in many cases. So, with the reinsurance program no longer helping to pay the largest claims, rates would likely increase once again. So, a 20 percent subsidy won’t look so good if the premium increase without reinsurance is larger than the subsidy itself.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz God Sent Us - Genesis 45:3-15 In this section of the Joseph story he emphasizes to his brothers that God sent him to Egypt. Three times he tells them this, first is at the end of verse 5, then verse 7. and again in verse 8. This is an important point -- that is why it is repeated 3 times.

This is the second time Joseph’s brothers have come to Egypt for food and it is only the 2nd year of a 7 year famine. Joseph knows they have to make the move to Egypt. But are his brothers ready? Jealousy, anger, resentment, stupidity all led his 10 brothers to sin gravely against Joseph. Now the one you hurt is the second most powerful man in Egypt. What would you do?

God-given faith involves learning to embrace new life after making such a mess of things that one can hardly fathom that any good could come from it.

But that is how God works. He brings life from death. Joseph’s brothers need to die to their past sins and embrace the new life God has prepared for them in Egypt. Change for sinners is not only possible but it is demanded by God. For God desires all men to come to the knowledge of truth and to be saved and

we can’t do that holding onto the mistakes of our past. The hardest part of faith is believing that God can and does forgive our worst mistakes. Yet God is ready with his mercy.

The flip side of this lesson is Joseph’s side. Joseph was the innocent one. The sin, the evil, the hiddenness of God was at work in his life and sure enough it caused him great discomfort. His call to faith was seeing God at work through the bad things. Remember, God sent him, he tells his brothers that three times.

Faith is the ability to follow our Lord and receive new life after being brought to brink of death (see 1 Corinthians 15:30-42). So it is with seeds that they are at the brink of death when they burst forth with new life. They look dead and they don’t have much life in them but when the time is right the new life that has been infused in them by their parents bursts forth. When Joseph’s time came to fulfill his heavenly father’s plan new life burst forth.

These death and life cycles don’t just happen once but God continues to use this cycle throughout our lives even to the point of our physical death.

Faith and discipleship are about learning how to repent of our sin, embrace the wages of that sin and then in Christ arise to new life for the glory of God. For if we accomplish things through our own strength we should get the glory. Rather God saves us for his own glory therefore he uses the weakest and deadest things to accomplish his work.

To those who have been thrown in a pit, made huge mistakes, who have been brought to the brink of death, who have suffered and been forgotten in prisons remember that God sends us to bring life. Through our mistakes and suffering we learn the fullness of the gospel in Jesus and are given it to share with those around us. Just as Joseph was sent to Egypt to save life and so were his brothers, we are sent in God’s mercy to save life too. Amen.

-Dustin Dear Dustin, I’d max out a Roth IRA, which would be $6,000 a year in your case, before I did anything with the 457(b). That may not take you to the level I recommend— which is putting 15 percent of your income toward retirement—so then I’d investigate the options offered by the insurance company that’s managing your 457(b).

When you have a look at the options available to you within the 457(b), you’ll need to pay special attention

to two things—the fees, this is where they’ll kill you, and the rates of return.

If they are somehow accessing mutual funds, and you can get stock marketlike rates of return—I’m talking about a 10 to 12 percent average over many years—then I’d put some in there.

Still, warning sirens in my head go off when I hear that a life insurance company is running a 457(b). Investing through a life insurance company is a bad idea 100 percent of the time. Now, is it a bad enough idea in this case to avoid it altogether? It may be an okay idea in this specific instance, but chances are it won’t be anything you’ll look at later and be blown away by great results.

That kind of thing just isn’t going to happen when you wrap an insurance company, or life insurance, around investing. I mean, you don’t go to a transmission shop to get your muffler fixed. It’s just not what they do!

Snowmobile riders: Enjoy great conditions, leave booze at home Conditions for snowmobile riding in many parts of the state are as good as they’ve been in a long time, prompting what Department of Natural Resources conservation officers call the biggest number of riders in years to hit the state’s 22,000 miles of snowmobile trails.

While zipping around on a sled is a great way to experience Minnesota’s snow-covered outdoors, enforcement officials remind riders to leave the booze on the shelf or in the refrigerator until after they’re done riding.

Alcohol is a factor in more than 70 percent of snowmobile-related fatalities in Minnesota. And it isn’t just intoxicated drivers who pay the price for their bad decisions.

Earlier this month, Eric Coleman was sentenced to 12.5 years in prison for a tragic incident last year when the snowmobile he was driving struck and killed 8-year-old Alan Geisenkoetter Jr. Coleman, who was drunk and whose driver’s license was revoked when he crashed into the boy, had multiple previous DWIs in a motor vehicle. The incident prompted state lawmakers to close loopholes in the state’s DWI law.

“We hope the increased penalties for people convicted of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence will cause them to think twice before drinking and riding. But they won’t bring back Alan or heal the damage this senseless crash caused his family,” said Jen Mueller, a regional training officer in the DNR Enforcement Division and the agency’s Enforcement Education Officer of the Year.

The new law – Little Alan’s Law – went into effect Aug. 1, 2018. It means people convicted of driving while intoxicated – regardless of the vehicle they’re driving – lose their driver’s license and are prohibited from operating motor vehicles, including all-terrain vehicles, motorboats and snowmobiles. Before the law change, people convicted of DWI in a highway-licensed vehicle still could legally operate ATVs, motorboats and snowmobiles. The changes apply to violations that occurred on or after Aug. 1, 2018.

The DNR anticipates Little Alan’s Law will affect more than 2,000 people each month in Minnesota. But since the law requires a DWI conviction – and these cases take time to move through the court system – specific numbers aren’t yet available.

Text-to-911

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone that Textto-911 has been available throughout Minnesota since December 2017. Textto-911 is a great option for deaf and hard of hearing individuals who are unable to make a voice call. Another reason to use Text-to-911 would be if you are unable to safely make a voice call and need to remain discreet, such as reporting domestic violence, home invasions, human trafficking and suicidal individuals. Text-to-911 does not have the location accuracy of a traditional voice call and the texter will need to give the 911 Dispatcher their exact location. Persons who are able to make a phone call are still highly encouraged to do so.

Should you find yourself in a situation where you need to Text-to-911, there are a few reminders that will make things easier for both the texter and the 911 Dispatcher receiving the text: • Use simple words – no text abbreviations or emojis • Text your exact location and type of emergency • Promptly answer questions from the 911 Dispatcher, follow their instructions
