Business lessons from George Washington As a history major, I am intrigued by the origins of our great country. George Washington is a logical place to start.

Last week we celebrated his birthday with Abraham Lincoln’s as Presidents Day – the third Monday in February.

But what do we really know about this founding father who led our country through the Revolutionary War? The New York Times wrote: By comparing textbooks used in the 1960s with those of today, researchers at Mount Vernon, Washington’s home in Virginia, have concluded that Washington now occupies just 10 percent of the space he had then.

A recent study by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni [for Mount Vernon] found that just 42 percent could name Washington as the man who

was called “first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”

Some of the business lessons that Washington espoused are still relevant today. He was the definition of a pragmatist. He was very practical and had a straightforward, matter-of-fact approach. He was always focused on reaching a goal.

Washington was not your typical politician. He believed in brevity. His second inaugural address was only 134 words.

He was incredibly smart and shrewd.

As commander in chief of the American forces, Washington refused a regular salary and worked for expenses only.

He came out thousands of dollars ahead.

When offered the U.S. Presidency, he volunteered to work for expenses again – but this time Congress insisted he have a fixed salary.

Among his writings was this advice to his nephew, Bushrod Washington, January 15, 1783: “Be courteous to all, but intimate with few; and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and

withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation. Let your heart feel for the afflictions and distress of every one, and let your hand give in proportion to your purse, remembering always the estimation of the widow’s mite, that it is not everyone that asketh that deserveth charity; all, however, are worthy of the inquiry, or the deserving may suffer.”

And to General William Woodford, he wrote: “. . . be strict in your discipline; that is, to require nothing unreasonable of your officers and men, but see that Harvey Mackay continued to pg 9

Obituaries Ryan L. Schmit

Services celebrating the life of Ryan L. Schmit, age 25, of Holdingford, will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albany. Pastor Stephen Cook will officiate and burial will take place in Arban Cemetery after a luncheon. There will be a visitation from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Thursday at the church in Albany.

Ryan was born on July 8, 1989 to Lawrence and Lenore (Guse) Schmit at the St. Cloud Hospital. He grew up with two sisters and graduated from Holdingford High School.

Ryan loved music, played the guitar, piano, and drums. While in high school, he and his friend Danny were in a band together. Ryan enjoyed writing and playing his own original

music. He also crafted guitars and was a gifted artist. Ryan participated in theater, both in high school and later in college. He was a sensitive young man who liked to wax philosophical.

Ryan liked to joke, to be absurd, and to make others laugh. His love for animals was evident when, as a young child, he’d find animals to rescue, take care of, and keep at home. Ole, his dog, was a beloved companion. Ryan enjoyed being outdoors, lying in the grass, and soaking up the sun. His sisters fondly recall the many bike rides on the Wobegon Trail to Albany.

Ryan is survived by his parents Lawrence and Lenore Schmit, Holdingford; sisters Nicole (Seth) Lembeck, St. Cloud; Sarah (Michelle Gertken) Schmit, Albany; Grandma Shirley Winter, Janesville, MN; aunts and uncles Ernie (Lois) Schmit, Janey Schmit, Betty (Terry Olson) Schmit-Olson, Gerald (Terri) Schmit, Ralph (Laura) Schmit, Mavis (Steve) Klein, Barb (Tom) Souvie, Joan Guse, Erv Guse, Helen Guse, Bernice (Rod) Harman, Shirley (Jeff Helbach) Guse, Howard (Kristi) Guse, Mel Guse, Russ (Jen) Guse, Paul (Sarah) Berry; many cousins and other family and friends.

He is preceded by his grandparents Alfred and Marie Schmit, Doris and Herman Guse, uncles Ronald Schmit and Glen Guse, aunt Jill Berry, and his constant companion Ole.

Arlene M. Hiltunen

Arlene M. Hiltunen, age 86 of Grey Eagle, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 21 at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Tibbetts officiating.

Arlene Marie Ainali was born March 26, 1928 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to George and Ruth (Murphy) Ainali. On June 16, 1946 she married Willard Hiltunen at the Ainali Farm in Grey Eagle. After their marriage, the couple lived in Little Falls for a short time before moving to Grey Eagle and residing at Big Birch Lake. The couple spent time together fishing and Arlene enjoyed listening to Willard play his concertina and guitar. Arlene was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle where she taught Sunday school and served the annual meatball dinner for many years.

She loved gardening, listening to the radio, quilting, embroidering, reading,

Irene E. Kittelson, 78 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, formally of Avon and Alexandria MN, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral service was held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Burial took place at Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. Irene was born on February 25, 1936 in Swanville, Minnesota to Frank and Gladys (Martin) Hanson. She graduated from Swanville High School. Irene married Lloyd Kittelson, Jr. on March 15, 1955.

Irene enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.

She was known for her spur-of-the-moment trips to visit family and friends; or to try her luck at the casino. She loved to entertain and was always willing to help someone in need. Her door was always open for good conversation and a hot meal on the table.

Irene is survived by her daughter, Dorinda Peterick of Little Falls, MN; son and daughter-in-law Dalen and Sheryl Kittelson of Avon, MN; Son-in-Law Glenn Peterick of St. Cloud, MN; 10 Grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Catherine Mary Wiechmann Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at the Church of St. Benedict in Avon for Catherine Wiechmann who died Friday at the St. Cloud Hospital.

The Rev. Blane Wasnie, O.S.B. officiated and burial was on Wednesday at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

Catherine was born in Lake Henry to Joseph & Bertha (Moser) Fuchs. She married Elmer A. Wiechmann on September 10, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon.

She and Elmer farmed in the Upsala area

Theresa F. Bieniek

The mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Theresa Frances Bieniek, age 86 of Holdingford, was held Saturday, February 21, 2015 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Theresa died peacefully at the St. Cloud Hospital on Monday, February 16, 2015.

Theresa was born, March 7, 1928 in Bowlus to Christian and Mary (Kupka) Klimek. She grew up and attended school in Bowlus. She married Alois R. Bieniek on May 10, 1949 in North Prairie, and the couple made their home and worked their farm near Holdingford for most of their life.

Following the death of her husband, Theresa

for many years until retiring and moving back to Avon in 1993. She was a homemaker who loved to bake, can, garden, knit and sew. She loved to play cards especially her favorite game 500. She was a generous and sincere woman who loved her family very much. She is a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon and was a 50 year member of the Christian Woman’s group of St. Benedict’s Parish.

Survivors include her children, Theresa (Larry) Eikmeier of Austin; Rosie (Vernon) Ashfeld of Rockville; LeRoy (Trudy) Wiechmann of Sartell; Loretta (Marvin) Fischer of Avon; 7 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer in 2008, infant grandsons, Timothy and Thomas Ashfeld, siblings, Ed, Clem, Raymond, Martin, Leo, Joseph Fuchs, Eleanor Maile, Anna Doll, and Clara Maile.

made her home in the town of Holdingford for the past 20 years. Theresa was a devoted member of St Hedwig’s Catholic Church, its choir, and Christian Mothers/Rosary Sodality. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Theresa enjoyed many hobbies, including: gardening, making baby quilts, sewing, cooking, decorating her home, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Chester Angulski, 87, of St. Anna was held on Monday, February 23, 2015 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna. Father Gregory Mastey officiated and burial will be in the parish cemetery at a later date. Chester passed away at his home on Wednesday morning.

Chester was born on November 23, 1927 to Vincent and Sophia (Szczawinski) Angulski in Avon Township. He grew up in the St. Anna area and graduated from the Albany High School. Chet served honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. He married Lois Lysher on June 21, 1952 in St. Anna. In 1955, he and his wife purchased the Pelican Lake Resort from his parents. Chet was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, a Trustee, and longtime lector and choir member; the Knights of Columbus- a past Grand Knight,

Albany American Legion, the Pelican Lake Association, St. Anna Sportsman Club, and the MN Waters. He also served on the Albany school board. He was employed in Production Control at DeZurik’s for 34 years, retiring in 1990. Chet enjoyed spending time with family and friends and friendships made at the resort, traveling -especially visiting the Holy Land and to Poland to meet his Angulski relatives; classical music, crossword puzzles, and reading. He was a great outdoorsman, a steward of Pelican Lake, and enjoyed bird watching, hunting, and mushroom gathering.

Chet is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lois Angulski; five children, Debra Angulski, Avon; Mary Kay (Dean) Baggenstoss, Bemidji; Gail (Scott) Michaletz, North Mankato; Kevin Angulski, Minneapolis; and Kathryn (Charles) Stifter, Champlin; 11 grand-children: Shadric, Jacob, Peter, Anne, Jon, Matthew, Laura, Emma, Andrew, Sarah, and Molly; 7 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; siblings, Edwin (Marie) Angulski, Coon Rapids; Jeanne Sobieck, Avon; and Daniel Angulski, Crystal; in-laws: Leon (Anne) Lysher, King George, VA; Joan (Harold) Vos, Dane, WI; and Jane Miller, Bedford, VA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gwentha V. Konsor, 98 year old resident of Holdingford, passed away Monday, February 23 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House, St. Augusta.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 at Community Country Church in Holdingford, MN with Rev. Gregg Valentine officiating. Burial will be at the South Elmdale Cemetery northeast of Holdingford. Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday at the church and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Gwentha Arnold Konsor was born at Lake Alma, Saskatchewan, Canada on May 23, 1916 to Fred and Edna (Edeburn) Arnold.

She came to Minnesota in 1931, graduating from Holdingford High School in 1936. She worked at the local telephone office for six years before traveling by train to Washington D.C. during World War II. There she delivered files to J. Edgar Hoover and others at the FBI. She returned to Minnesota and married Richard Konsor on March 2, 1946. She was a loving wife to Richard for 49 years and supported him in founding DCI (Dairy Craft) along with his twin brother Fred, Carl Nielsen and C. Ray Hughes. She was a caring mother to Gary, Diane and Sharon. Gwentha was a member of Community Country Church (formerly

Everyone needs a little pocket money. It’s probably not going to throw you off too much if you put $10 or $20 in there. But $100 or $200? That’s a bit much when you’re scrimping, saving and supposedly working hard to get out of debt.

Think of it as a safety valve, Aurora.

Everyone needs a break and a little fun now and then. Whether it’s grabbing lunch out, or going to a movie once in a while, you need to relax and let off little steam.

Just make it part of your regular monthly budget, and stick to the amount.

Little things like this will help keep your total money makeover moving in the right direction without wearing you out!

-Dave Dear Dave, God bless you and your family. I’m so sorry you have to go through this, but I’m glad to hear you were in good enough shape financially to handle the burden.

That means you were both very wise with

your money.

My advice is to pre-plan, but don’t prepay. As you discovered, having to make important decisions in the midst of that kind of grief is a hard thing to do. Sometimes, people are so emotional during times like these that they make bad decisions. So, pre-planning and making selections ahead of time is a great idea.

But it’s never a good idea to prepay for this kind of thing, and here’s why. If you live to an average age, for what you’d prepay today at age 45, you could invest the amount, be self-insured for that kind of thing, and in all likelihood have a ton of money sitting there when your time comes.

Events like this make you realize the need for proper planning, but don’t ever prepay them. Lots of people in the funeral industry don’t like me for this stance, but that’s just because they make lots of money on prepayment plans.

Health Insurance Brings Tax Day Surprise for Some Some Minnesotans who received a subsidy last year to help cover the cost of their health insurance may be in for a surprise when they file their tax return for 2014.

At least one constituent reported to me that they must pay several hundred dollars of additional tax to cover the subsidy they received from the federal government to defray the cost of insurance. To be fair, this is not a problem brought on by the troubled MnSure exchange in Minnesota.

It has to do with incomes that turned out to be underestimated, which resulted in subsidies received that were too large.

Back when folks signed up for health coverage and the associated subsidies for last year, 2013 incomes were used to de-

termine the level of subsidy. However, if the actual income for 2014 increased by a certain level, it changed or eliminated the subsidy amount people were entitled to receive. That’s the reason why some will have to pay income tax on that subsidy, although they had no idea this might happen. And even if they knew, it would have been very difficult, if not impossible, to get back into the MnSure system to make a change in income, which would have also resulted in a lower subsidy and higher health insurance premiums.

In addition, an announcement late last week from Washington told of an error in sending out tax information to nearly one million Americans. It’s a new form called 1095-A, and it goes to all who received a subsidy to help with the cost of health insurance. This situation also serves as a strong message illustrating the new and complicated link between health care law and taxes. Nationally, it’s estimated the wrong information was sent out to one in five of those who received subsidies. The information represents a tax reporting error on the government’s part that will slow down the filing season, especially for those who file early in hopes of receiving a refund.

Anytime, anyone is diagnosed with cancer is a day to remember. “Why me and why now God?” is the standard response for most individuals who hear these words. The initial impact of those words is difficult to accept and usually faith-threatening. How could a loving Father do such a mean, ugly thing to one of His children? When life caves in, what are we to do?

David was experiencing a difficult time in his life. And although he was uncertain about his future he was confident in the One who controlled it. In a burst of trust he said, “My times are in Your hands!”

There is something comforting in those words. A reassurance that God has a plan and purpose for each of us. We did not wander into this world by accident. God did not intend for us to drift through life like clouds in the sky. He brought each of us into this world with something to do, some place to go and some plan to fulfill. All throughout our lives we are in the hands of God. We are often tempted to think, “If I were in control I would have done things differently.” No pain, no suffering, no temptations, no mistakes. But, thank God, we are not in control. We do not know the future nor do we know what is best for us. But we do know that whatever God is doing in our lives is in our best interest. He wants us to be conformed to His image and He is the only One who knows how to do that.

Richard O. Asseln

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Richard O. Asseln, age 74, of Melrose, will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, February 27, 2015 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in St. Cloud.

Tony Schmitt will officiate and burial will take place at Camp Ripley on a later date. Richard passed away surrounded by loving family Saturday evening at the St. Cloud Hospital. There will be a visitation after 10:00 AM until the time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Richard was born on February 12, 1941 to Marvin and Sylvia (Hile) Asseln in LeMars, Iowa. He grew up with three siblings and after graduating high school joined the military.

Richard proudly served his country in the US Navy as a part of the Air Anti-Submarine Squadron 21. He married Tilla Oliver on October 1, 1960 in Geneva, Nebraska and together they raised two daughters. Richard worked as a Flight Instructor for St. Cloud

Aviation and delivered planes to Alaska.

After his retirement, he continued to work part time as a Security Guard for Hannon.

Richard was a fun-loving and humorous man who enjoyed family and friends. A fan of Ducks Unlimited, he enjoyed hunting ducks, deer, and geese. He also loved his pets, most notably his black lab Rambo who was a cherished hunting companion. Fishing was another pastime he enjoyed as well as building birdhouses and ice fishing houses.

Richard was a proud, dedicated member of Alcoholics Anonymous and had maintained his sobriety for over 13 years and was supportive of others in their own struggles with addiction.

Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years Tilla, children Chris (Steve) Lorentzen, Little Falls and Cindy (Ray) Pilarski, St. Joe; siblings Bob (Sandy) Asseln, Melrose; Randy (Peggy) Asseln, St. Stephen; and Sheryl (Bill) Lunceford, Long Prairie; grandchildren Matt, Adam, Angie, and Mandy; 2 great-grandchildren Oliver and Jennayea; as well as many other family and friends.

He is preceded by his parents Marvin and Sylvia Asseln and his beloved dog Rambo.

When he died, Washington provided in his will for the emancipation of his slaves upon the death of Martha, his wife.

Washington was the only member of the Virginia dynasty to free all of his slaves.

His leadership lessons are worth noting also.

In 1787 a resolution was introduced into the Constitutional Convention to limit the size of the Continental Army to 10,000 men. The resolution seemed well on its way to passage until Washington was heard to say, “A very good idea. Let us also limit by law, the size of any invading force to 3,000 men.” The resolution was quickly defeated.

One reason the U.S. Congress has two houses is the following conversation between Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson, who did not attend the Constitutional Convention, was not happy with the proposed bi-cameral system for the legislative branch of the new government. During a visit to Washington at his home, Jefferson argued for the French uni-cameral system, one legislative house.

After much discussion around the tea table, Washington turned sharply to Jefferson and said, “You, sir, have just demonstrated by your own hand the superior excellence of the bi-cameral system.”

“How is that?” asked Jefferson.

“You just poured your tea from your

cup into its saucer to cool. In the same manner, we want the bi-cameral system to cool things. A measure originates in one house, and in heat is passed. The other house will serve as a wonderful cooler, and by the time it is debated and modified by various amendments, it is much more likely to become an equitable law. No, we can’t get along without the saucer in our system.”

The new roof and other hall work is almost complete. The council appreciates the Lion’s Club for donating the money to pay for the work.

Legislative Update -By State Rep. Ron Kresha LPGE Schools Update Security System

A chilling week as a blast of cold settled in our area. I hope everyone has been able to stay warm and that no one suffered any heating problems. The good news is that Spring is not far away. The way I see it, we are only six good fish fries from birds and warmer weather.

The legislative season has warmed up and a couple of the bills I am working on have moved through committee, and there is a quite a bit to cover this week.

Broadband: Last week I received notification that our area was a recipient of a border-to-border broadband grant that would bring service to parts of Morrison County.

While that is encouraging, we need to keep building on the rural broadband initiative.

My bill to keep the border-to-border broadband program funded passed the Greater Minnesota Jobs Committee on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, my bill to expand regional library telecommunications passed the Education Finance committee. This bill is also part of my goal to continue to bring better broadband speeds to Greater Minnesota.

Child Protection: On Tuesday, my sig-

nature piece of legislation regarding the safety of children passed the Health and Human Services Reform committee and is scheduled for a vote on the House Floor next Monday.

This bill places children front and center as a our primary concern in maltreatment cases and allows the state to look at historical allegations when determining the safety of a child. It is a small step forward on a complex problem.

Jobs and Workforce Housing: Next week will also be a busy week as I expand my efforts to boost high-paying jobs and workforce housing for Greater Minnesota.

I have diligently worked to give businesses a climate where they can expand and hire more people. Those efforts will continue next week.

Lastly, I was visited this week by many folks from the district. Thank you for coming down. It was refreshing to talk to the farmers, builders, and city officials who came to visit.
