Don’t get caught in perception deception A bird was searching for a home to lay her eggs so they’d be safe during the coming rainy season. In her search, she saw two trees, so she went to ask them for shelter.

When she asked the first tree, it refused to give her shelter.

Disappointed, she went to the second tree.

The second tree agreed, so she built a nest and laid her eggs.

Then the rainy season arrived. The rain was so heavy that the first tree toppled over and was carried away by the flood.

The bird saw this and laughed. “This is your punishment for not offering me shelter.”

The tree smiled. “I knew I wasn’t going to survive this rainy season. That’s why I refused you. I didn’t want to risk your and your children’s lives.” And it drifted away.

The bird got tears in her eyes. Now that she knew the reason, she felt gratitude and respect for the tree.

How many times have we perceived the wrong scenario, or perhaps the wrong reason for no? A rush to judgment can lead to disaster, or at the very least, regrets.

It’s so important to give your brain time to consider all the available facts before taking action that is difficult to reverse.

Know what triggers your responses.

Certain smells or songs can remind you of good times or unhappy memories.

Remind yourself that you are in the present situation and try to ignore some of the factors that color your judgment. Ask for others’ opinions. We all see things through our own lenses, and different perspectives can help you shape your perceptions incorporating things you may not have noticed. You may not agree with their observations, but you will have a broader range of possibilities.

And finally, don’t overlook the obvious. Quite often, the truth is right in front of you. When the facts all add up, it’s reasonably safe to conclude that your perception is accurate. You can trust your intuition when you have good information.

Second-guessing yourself when you have good information is an exercise in futility.

An old story tells about two cowpokes that came upon a man lying on his stomach with his ear to the ground. One cowpoke said to the other, “You see that guy? He’s listening to the ground. He can hear things for miles in any direction.”

hear or feel, previous experiences, opinions of others, even concerns about how you might be perceived. How you perceive a thing determines how you receive a thing.

If you perceive something as negative, that’s exactly how you will receive that message. In other words, your outlook often determines your outcome.

“We must look at the lens through which we see the world, as well as the world we see, and that the lens itself shapes how we interpret the world,” wrote Stephen R. Covey in “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change.”

That’s why it matters whether you have enough good information to make a judgment about a particular situation. If you are operating on faulty premises or preconceived notions, your response may be completely unreasonable. Look at what you complain about and see if a change in perception can help you.

Therefore, it is critical that you develop your perceptive abilities so that you won’t reach the wrong conclusion. The power of perception can change your life.

There are several strategies you can practice that help you develop more precise perceptions.

Look at yourself as others might see you. Past experiences can evoke powerful memories that guide your perceptions.

For example, a particular negotiation with a difficult customer has made you dread doing business with them again. But move to the other side of the table: maybe that customer has had some bad experiences with quality, delivery or price that affects their perception. A little empathy can go a long way.

We need to notice the changes motor vehicles have caused to America. Before cars, the ability to travel from home to another location was primarily done by either walking or with horse power.

Because these methods limited the distance we traveled, those, especially from the rural area were limited in their ability to experience social activities experienced in larger communities. This caused the rural people to be unaware of the new ideas, there-by sometimes being referred to as “country bumpkins.”

Motorized vehicles allowed travel to places on a regular basis that were previously only seen maybe once per year. This opened a whole world of entertainment and experiences never available previously. Now it was possible to visit someone 20 miles away, leave at noon and still be home in time for chores.

One could attend a gathering in another town and find out some new ideas about how to possibly change your own life. If the larger town was showing a movie that you wished to see, you could just drive over there. Maybe there was a dance hall that had a band you really liked, you could just take a short ride to attend. If you wanted to go roller skating in a neighboring town, you could just do it. Social gatherings such a fairs, parades or picnics in another town became commonplace. Driving to another community to see a larger variety of goods for purchase became part of normal shopping experience. Your world, as you know it, became much larger.

Traveling by automobile has also expanded our social group. There was a time, not too long ago, when people found

Today we consider the motor vehicle to be totally accepted and commonplace in our everyday life. There was a time when the appearance of some mode of transportation with four wheels that was not attached to horses was an oddity.

When the first cars appeared, they looked somewhat similar to horsedrawn vehicles. As they became more accepted, the manufacturers began to realize that they would sell more vehicles if they included fenders to deflect the dirt and slop from the tires. They also included a roof and windows to protect the occupants from adverse weather conditions. Generators were included to charge batteries to support a starter and lights. They even began to be available with rubber tires for better ride and traction. They even came in colors other than black.

Today’s vehicles are very different than the original models. A pick-up today includes most of the comfort features included in passenger cars. It no longer looks, rides or works like the original pickup trucks. In many cases, today’s pick-up is primarily used as one would use a private passenger car. In fact many pick-ups today are never used to carry a load, they have become a shiny, studly, up to $80,000.00 status symbol. In some of the small towns, there are more pick-ups parked along the

Gerald J. “Jerry” Sonnen, age 78 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, February 22 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Gerald John Sonnen was born May 14, 1942 in Melrose, Minnesota to Lambert and Veronica (Kemper) Sonnen. He lived and farmed the Sonnen farm south of Melrose

Melvin G. “Mel” Bauer, age 87 of Albany, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at his home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, February 22 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany with Rev. Julius Beckermann, O.S.B. officiating. A private interment was held Tuesday, February 23 at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Melvin George Bauer was born February 20, 1933 in Albany, Minnesota to John and Rita (Novak) Bauer. He spent his early years on the family farm enjoying and helping his grandparents and aunt and uncle, Regina and Louie Novak. He was a member of the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1957. Visitation will be Friday, February 26, 2021 from 4-7 pm and 1 hour prior to services Saturday at First Baptist Church in Long Prairie.

Stephen was born December 15, 1953 in Worthington to Irving & Lois (Swenson) Larson. He grew up in Long Prairie and was active in sports playing tennis, golf, baseball and basketball. He was also a very hard worker and worked during high school and college at Cathedral Press. After high school Steve attended school at Bethel College, Southern Cal and finally Fullerton School of Optometry.

He married Charletta Arens on September 29, 1979 at First Baptist Church in Long Prairie.

Steve was very active at First Baptist as a Deacon, soloist, and choir member. He was very involved in his communities and was active in the Jaycees, Rotary and Gideons, giving speeches and singing at area events.

Survivors include his sisters, Lenore Schmitz of Melrose, Darlene (Cyril) Meyer of Meire Grove, Kathy Heinze of Sauk Centre, and Jean (LuVerne) Ritter of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Richard Schmitz and Ed Heinze; and nephew, Timothy Ritter.

Serving as casket bearers were Dean Meyer, Scott Ritter, Chad Ritter, Craig Heinze, Jay Heinze, and Daryl Heinze. Cross bearer was Kim Austin and scripture bearer was Jenny Dold. Readers were Tamie Gerding, Jill Roerick, and Amy Michael. Petitions were read by Gary Meyer.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Jeanette Benda.

He was very loving, trustworthy, loyal, and always fun to be around. Steve was very generous and would do anything for people and not expecting anything in return. He was very proud of his optometrist offices and was active in the district Optometrists organization, being a past President and representative.

Steve loved traveling and keeping active, he enjoyed playing beach volleyball, and playing tennis and golf. His son Tony was his pride and joy and he loved spending time with him, coaching in the early years, and watching him play tennis throughout high school, college, and his professional career.

Survivors include his wife, Charletta of Alexandria; son, Anthony (Annmarie) Larson of Arizona; sisters and brother, Sharon (Fred) Lund of Duluth; Faith (David) Petersen of Long Prairie; Diane (Larry) Brandes of Long Prairie; Mary Beth (Mark) Roe of Downingtown, PA; Jon (Darrah) Larson of Long Prairie. He is also survived by his 4 Thai sisters, Jeed (Andy) Peterson of St. Paul; Pat (Adul) Siriphasraporn of St. Paul; Dao (Kevin) Hoffman of St. Paul and Rach Adams of St. Paul. And several nieces and nephews.

Alma A. Schulte, age 89 of Freeport, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Alma Anna Frericks was born January 25, 1932 in Freeport, Minnesota to Herman and Walburga (Beste) Frericks. On September 28, 1954 she married Justin Schulte at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Alma worked at Jennie-O for 27 years and worked beside her husband on the family farm.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial. Alma enjoyed playing cards and BINGO, gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Craig Walter Peleske, age 51, Waite Park, MN, died Saturday, February 20, 2021 at his home in Waite Park.

Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Craig was born September 18, 1969 in St. Cloud, MN to William “Bill” C. and Jean M. (Dobmeier) Peleske. He graduated from Holdingford High School in 1988. Following graduation Craig entered the United States Army in September of 1988. He served for 14 years in the Army and was stationed in Germany, Korea, Macedonia, Kansas and Washington State. Craig was discharged in 2002. He was employed by the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center.

Craig was united in marriage to Yasmin Uberle on January 4, 1994 in Denmark. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and watching old

Locally Growin’ Campaign Begins March 1st Spring is here! “Locally Growin’,” the fundraising campaign at Great River Regional Library (GRRL), runs Monday, March 1st through Wednesday, March 31st, 2021.

Our Locally Growin’ campaign keeps donations 100 percent within the branch library of the donor’s choosing. Each library selects a specific “wish” item and a campaign goal. Over $20,000 was raised around the region in 2019 to support a wide variety of goals. Our campaign was cut short in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 closure, so we look forward to making a big difference this year! Each library’s goal is unique and focuses on its community interests and needs. A few exciting wishes that libraries are raising money for this year include the following: · Have a collection of books to make reading approachable for children, like juvenile large print books.

Albany Twp. Fire - UPDATED INFORMATION: February 14, 2021: The Stearns County Communications Center received a call reporting a building fire at 23864 360th Str. in Albany Township at approximately 4:37 p.m.. Deputies responded to the scene and located the fire in a machine shed on the property. Albany Fire and Rescue arrived on scene and extinguished the fire.

A SUV located inside the shed was consumed in the fire. The owner of the property was identified as the Krebs Family Farms, LLC. Deputies spoke to a member of the LLC who was on scene and determined that the vehicle did not belong to the LLC and was left at the location by an unknown person. The vehicle was later found to have been reported stolen in Stearns County and that portion of the investigation is continuing. The owners of the farm site where it was recovered are not considered suspects in the stolen vehicle case or subsequent fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A State Fire Marshal’s office investigator also responded to the scene. If you have any information regarding this fire please call the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number, 320-251-4240 or the State Fire Marshal’s tip line at 1-800723-2020.

Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance also assisted at the scene.

The American Red Cross has scheduled a Bloodmobile at First United Church, 1000 1st Street SE, Little Falls, on Monday, March 1, 8:30 am-2:30 pm, Tuesday, March 2, noon-6 pm and Wednesday, March 3 from 1-7 pm. Anyone who is at least 16 years of age (please bring parental consent), weighs at least 110 pounds and is considered to be in good health may be eligible to donate blood. There is no upper age limit and the time commitment is minimal.

Todd County Septic Funding Available Todd County is taking advantage of the Clean Water Partnership Loan Program offered by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for updating existing septic systems.

This program is available to anyone who wants to update their failed, old or undersized septic system.

The loan dollars are available to applicants on a first come, first served basis.

Applicants apply directly through the Todd County Planning & Zoning office. All complete applications will be accepted as long as the request is to replace an existing septic system and they are not currently delinquent

Child Care Assistance Available for Qualifying Families

The Minnesota Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) can help qualifying families pay for child care while they go to work, look for work or attend school. This program assists with child care costs for children ages 0 through 12, and for children with special needs through age 14.

Eligibility is based upon family size, family income and participation in authorized activities. All families receiving child care assistance and earning 75% or more of the federal poverty guideline make co-payments based on family income.

The truth is any stock that doubles in value over the course of just one year is highly volatile. It’s unusual for stocks

I don’t know where you and your husband are in your overall financial situation, but I recommend people become debt-free except for their homes, and have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses saved up before investing.

Once you reach that point, I strongly advise to begin putting 15 percent of your income toward retirement before you start any outside investing.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind a little selective and educated dabbing here and there once the basics are taken care of first. However, I’d never recommend putting more than 10 percent of your nest egg into a single stock. The reason? If the single stock tanks and you lose it all, then your loss is only a blip on your financial radar.

Dear Motor Medics, It has been a crazy winter. We saw snow deeper than I have ever seen in my thirty years of living here and colder temps than we have ever seen for this long. My car and many friends’ cars would not start after sitting at work all day.

Once we got out of work, we had to plow through snow bumper deep to get home. I made it about four miles and my car started to overheat. The temp was about 5 degrees.

I had let my car run for about five minutes before I left work, but I had no heat all the way to it overheating. I sat along the side of the road for about ten minutes for it to cool then the car ran fine and had great heat and the coolant is full. What could be wrong?

-Lucinda in Longview, Texas Dear Lucinda, Coolant. If the coolant strength is too weak in a vehicle the coolant will freeze partially but not hard enough to damage the block but may restrict flow. Once the engine runs for a short time and the coolant thaws, it may work fine. Once you pulled over the coolant may have had time to thaw a bit from the heat built up by the running engine. Have the engine checked and describe exactly how it failed and have the coolant checked. Hopefully, it just needs a good complete coolant flush.

This usually occurs after the car sits overnight or more than one day. If I leave the door open or radio on for more than ten minutes, it will also go dead. I have been jump starting it using other cars to get going then I go into my shop and they tell me it is a little low, but it is still a good battery even though its seven years old. I am Upsala, MN

If you can leave a door open for a short while and the battery goes dead, it is a sure sign that the battery has no reserve capacity left. Reserve capacity is a measure of how long a battery can maintain a state of discharge before going dead. Yours is too short. A shop may have checked it, but you may want a second opinion. Being 7 years old is also a sign of a bad battery as they don’t tend to last much more than that but purchasing a jump starter is still a good safety item.

Eric Peterson, Stearns Electric Association Board of Director, received the Credentialed Cooperative Director certificate from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) in January.

An ever-changing business environment has imposed new demands on electric cooperative directors, requiring increased knowledge of changes in the electric utility industry, new governance skills, and a solid knowledge of the cooperative principles and business model. Stearns Electric has committed to work through NRECA to sharpen this body of knowledge for the benefit of its electric cooperative member-consumers.

The NRECA Credentialed Cooperative Director (CCD) program requires attendance and demonstrated understanding of basic competencies contained in five core courses: Director Duties and Liabilities, Understanding the Electric Business, Board Operations and Process, Strategic Planning, and Financial Decision Making.

Peterson was elected to the Cooperative’s Board in 2020 to represent District 8, which serves Minnesota Townships Kandota and Birchdale in Todd County; Westport in Pope County; and Ashley, Sauk Centre and Melrose in Stearns County.

“Stearns Electric is committed to providing training and education for both our employees and our board of directors,” Robin Doege, CEO, said. “The education that our directors obtain through NRECA’s training and education program provides a solid foundation of knowledge of the energy industry for our directors, and allows them to better serve our members and lead the Cooperative.”

A Help Funny

A local business was looking for office help.

They put a sign in the window, stating the following: “HELP WANTED. Must be able to type, must be good with a computer, and must be bilingual. We are an Equal Opportunity Employer.”

A short time afterwards, a dog trotted up to the window, saw the sign, and went inside. He looked at the receptionist and wagged his tail, then walked over to the sign, looked at it, and whined.

Getting the idea, the receptionist got the office manager. The office manager looked at the dog and was surprised, to say the least. However, the dog looked determined, so he led him into the office. Inside, the dog jumped up on the chair and stared at the manager. The manager said, “I can’t hire you. The sign says you have to be able to type.” The dog jumped down, went to the typewriter, and proceeded to type out a perfect letter. He took out the page and trotted over to the manager and gave it to him, then jumped back on the chair. The manager was stunned, but then told the dog, “The sign says you have to be good with a computer.”

The dog jumped down again and went to the computer. The dog proceeded to enter and execute a perfect program that worked flawlessly the first time. By this time the manager was totally dumbfounded!

He looked at the dog and said, “I realize that you are a very intelligent dog and have some interesting abilities. However, I ‘still’ can’t give you the job.” The dog jumped down and went to a copy of the sign and put his paw on the sentence that told about being an Equal Opportunity Employer. The manager said, “Yes, but the sign ‘also’ says that you have to be bilingual.”

The dog looked at the manager calmly and said, “Meow.”
