Make every minute count -By Harvey Mackay Why is it that the people who make the worst use of their time are the same ones who complain that there is never enough time?

The late management guru Peter Drucker, often called “the father of modern management,” said, “Time is the scarcest resource and unless it is managed nothing else can be managed.”

He added: “Everything requires time.

It is the only truly universal condition. All work takes place in time and uses up time.

Yet most people take for granted this unique, irreplaceable and necessary resource.”

I agree with author and salesman Percy Whiting who said: “Time is a fixed income, and as with any income, the real problem facing us is how to work successfully with our daily allotment. Plan each day down to the moment because once time is wasted, you can never get it back.”

I’m a big believer in preparation to save time. Whether I was selling for our envelope manufacturing company or meeting a colleague for a volunteer project, I made sure the people I was calling on were available.

Otherwise, it’s a waste of time for both parties.

You don’t ever want to be like the salesman who was having the biggest sales day of his life in a little clothing store. The more he talked, the more they ordered, much more than was normal for a store its size. He left thinking he was a superstar until he phoned in his order.

When the sales manager heard the name of the client, he burst into laughter. The boss asked, “Did you check the credit book?”

The salesman’s bubble burst. No wonder they had been eager to order from him. His “great” customer never paid his bills. It was a wasted day and a costly lesson.

Time is precious, which is why February is Time Management Month. Spend it wisely and stop wasting time on unimportant things.

As my friend Jim Rohn said, “Days are expensive. When you spend a day, you have one less day to spend. Make sure you spend each one wisely.”

If you feel like you are always trying to beat the clock, it’s time to evaluate where your time actually goes. We like to think we are experts at multi-tasking, but that generally means diverting attention from one project to another. When you are juggling several projects, organization is critical. Trust me, unless you have your ducks in a row, you will soon be drowning in inefficiency.

Here's what I recommend: Start with a priority list and establish what needs to be accomplished before you can turn your attention elsewhere. Plan your day/week/ month according to how much time you need to allot to each item. I also schedule a slot for other distractions, phone calls, emails and such. Sometimes it’s just 15 minutes, but that allows me to stay focused on the big items.

Do your research so you are prepared to see the project through – How much help will you need? What resources are available or necessary? What can you delegate? What deadlines do you need to meet? If it’s a solo job, set aside specific times devoted to this effort.

Just remember: Time is the one resource that you cannot buy or replace. It’s yours to use however you choose. Choose well.

This silly story illustrates why we need to make every minute count.

One morning a lazy man asked the king, “Why does everyone say that I can’t do anything on time?”

The king answered, “Let’s make a deal.

Before sunset, you come to my treasury and collect as much gold and pearls as you can.

They will all be yours.”

The man rushed home to his wife. He explained everything and his wife said, “Go and get the gold and gems now. Time is gold for you.”

The lazy man sat down and said, “I can’t go now. Give me lunch first.”

After having lunch, he decided to take a short nap, but instead slept for two hours.

Then, late in the afternoon, he picked a few bags and went towards the king’s treasury. On the way, he felt hot. So, he sat down under a tree to rest and ended up sleeping for another five hours. When he finally reached the palace, it was already sunset, and the palace gates had been shut. He lost the golden chance to get rich just because he didn’t know the value of time.

to turn a log of that diameter into boards.

There were no mega specialized machines to move and load those logs to get them out to the landing. Much of the work in the logging camps was done by men and their 4 legged helpers, there was a large number of both.

After the old-growth trees were harvested, the second growth timber included many softwood trees including basswood, aspen, box-elder and evergreens. These woods were smaller in diameter and were turned into cordwood. Cord-wood was primarily used for burning and heating. Early trains and steam boilers burned wood. It was also commonly used for residential heating. Cord-wood was cut into 8 foot lengths, which made it easier to handle and create. One man and a horse could cut and load a cord of soft-wood between morning chores and the noon meal. The cutting tools were primarily a cross-cut saw, a cant hook, a pick, an ax and lots of stooping and lifting.

The selling price of a cord of wood was about $4.00, which frequently included loading, delivery and unloading. $4.00 doesn't seem to be acceptable according to today's prices, but at that time it was enough money to buy two pair of work boots. If you were a cordwood cutter, you were paid $.03 per 8 foot stick of cord-wood. I haven't figured out how much a cutter could make per day. Much of the cord-wood was aspen, which was usually cut to lengths with an ax.

We supposedly can see old growth pines in Itasca Park and the Lost 40, but the size of these trees are not as large as some of the logs cut 150 years ago. Maybe the soil in those areas were not as good for growing trees.

The Minnesota forests definitely created an economic boom to early Minnesota, but lumbering today still creates a living for many families. Some of us still wish we were able to see Minnesota as it was before the white man changed it.

In the early years of Whiteman's settlement in the woods of northcentral Minnesota a large amount of the family's income was created by the sale of wood. There were several commercial logging companies, but the original homesteaders were a big influence in the disappearance of the forest.

Much of the original old growth timber was harvested in the second half of the 1800's.

This cleared land, in many cases was not changed into farmland and as a result it went back to trees. Hardwood trees usually take many more years to mature, but the softer woods are able to mature in from 40 to 60 years.

There are stories of ironwood trees in the old growth woods that were 3 to 4 foot in diameter. Today, if you find an ironwood tree that is more than 6 inches in diameter, cut it and count the growth rings, you'll find that that tree is well over 50 years old. Imagine how many years of growth were needed to reach the diameter of the old growth trees. Ironwood is probably the hardest tree to exist in this area. A story was told of someone making a ball bat of ironwood and evidently due to the hardness of the wood, when the bat hit the ball it transferred a very uncomfortable vibration into the batter's hands, causing the bat to be cut in half and burned in the kitchen stove.

We have been amazed by old pictures of logs with diameters of 10 feet. These trees were cut with a two-man cross-cut saw .... imagine how long those cross-cut saws needed to be. Think of the diameter of the saws needed

by a suspected drunk driver who was driving on the wrong side of the freeway. It happened just before 4 a.m. Friday near the Plymouth Road exit. A passenger in Caraveo's vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver of the car that hit them, 20-year-old Joseph Maness of St. Anthony, was treated for his injuries at North Memorial Hospital.

Fire: February 12, 2022: Responded to a garage fire in Millwood Twp. The garage was located approximately 10 feet from the house.

The garage contained a wood stove and also had some extension cords going from the house to the garage. Either one of those could have been the cause. The Freeport Fire Department responded to the fire along with Melrose Ambulance Service and the Melrose Fire Department. Assistance was also requested from the township in placing some sand on the road.

February 18, 2022: State patrol released the name of the Melrose man killed after his car was hit by a Jeep traveling on the wrong side of the road in Minnetonka Friday, Feb. 18. He was 30-year-old Alan Caraveo. Caraveo was traveling eastbound on I-394 when his car was hit head-on

Jon F. “Jack” Berscheid

Jon F. “Jack” Berscheid, age 61 of Rogers, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes on Monday, February 14, 2022 at his home in Rogers, Minnesota.

Jon Fredrick Berscheid was born December 11, 1960 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Arnold and Marie (Ahrens) Berscheid.

Following H.S. graduation, Jack obtained a degree in construction technology from St. Cloud Technical & Community College. After his degree, he embarked on a long and varied career in the building industry. His initial postcollegiate endeavor was the creation of a new home for his parents. From there, his career segued from construction labor with Avon Lumber and Berscheid Builders, to becoming a staircase fabricator extraordinaire first with Stairmasters of Hopkins, then through his own company. Most recently he worked with ZK Carpentry of Maple Plain. In addition to staircases, his repertoire included cabinetry, furniture, interior trim, design, remodel, exteriors, and everything between. Jack was sought after by every high-end construction company in Minnesota, and hundreds of homeowners and family members have him to thank for the beauty they enjoy secondary to his handiwork and craftsmanship. Above all, Jack will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and humorous wit. He was an awesome friend and better parent. The world is a lesser place without him.

Survivors include his children: Alyssa, Hannah, and Jackson Berscheid of St. Cloud.

Grandchildren: Liam, Landon, Gabriel, Amelia, and Frances. Life partner: Kathy Metcalf of Rogers. Brothers and sisters: Margaret Collins of Maplewood, Arnold Jr. (Clara) Berscheid of Grey Eagle, Kathryn (Adrian) Johnson of Melrose, Janet (David) Middendorf of Grey Eagle, Barbara (David) Buck of Cedar, Robert (Judy) Berscheid of Grey Eagle, Dennis Berscheid (Cindy) of Melrose, Patricia (Leland) Buchholz of Grey Eagle, Pamela (Steven) Klaphake of Freeport, Thomas Berscheid of Golden Valley, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, and brother-in-law-Kenneth Collins.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held this Spring, announcement pending.

Brian Wensmann

Brian Wensmann, 56-year-old resident of the Bowlus/Elmdale area died unexpectedly on Friday, February 18 in Largo, Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 26 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father David Grundman officiating.

A visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday and Saturday from 9:30 AM until the hour of the service at the church in Elmdale. The burial will be in the parish cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the St. Cloud VA Center in St. Cloud.

Brian F. Wensmann was born on October 4, 1965 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls to the late Donald and Rita (Zierdan) Wensmann. He grew up in the Bowlus area and attended Upsala High School. He graduated with the class of 1984.

After graduation he served his Country in the Army National Guard from 1982 until his honorable discharge in 2002. Brain was united in marriage to Lisa Moening on September 8, 1990 at the Church of St. Mary in Melrose, MN. The couple made their home in Bowlus. The couple were blessed with three children, Brandon, Miranda and Cody. Brian drove truck for the following companies throughout his life: Newman Manufacturing, Nornberg, Jay Baggenstoss, Schnieder Motorways, Burggraff milk line, Caledonia Haulers, Coborn’s and driving grain trucks for his brother, Ken. He also drove school bus for Upsala Schools for a few years. He enjoyed participating in several marathons and triathlons over the years. Brian treasured his time with his children building deer stands, deer hunting and going for four-wheeler rides looking for deer. He enjoyed traveling with his family, especially their winter trips to Florida and spending time at Cedar Lake or Breezy Point. Brian was always willing to play a game of 500 cards, carbles, spoons or just telling a good UFF DA Joke! He loved his grandchildren immensely even if meant getting fingernails painted from his granddaughter. Brian was often found at his children’s activities and was the biggest cheerer for their success. He will be remembered for his kind heart and willingness to help others when the need would arise. He was a member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Upsala American Legion Club and a Bible Study group in Upsala.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Lisa Wensmann of Bowlus; children, Brandon (Emily Roerick) Wensmann of St. Stephen, Miranda (Kellen) Franks of Rice, Cody (Crystal Kaun) Wensmann of Bowlus; brothers, Kenneth (Debbie) of Bowlus, Jim (Julie) of Bowlus, Greg (Renee) of Bowlus, Marvin (Shirley) of Upsala, Joel (Laura) of Sartell, Scott (Jen) of Upsala; six sisters, Diane Roske of Freeport, Cynthia (Donald Yandel) Wensmann of St. Cloud, Brenda (Ken) Yorek of Little Falls, Sandra (Tom) Herdering of Freeport, Wanda (Barry) Rathbun of St. Cloud, Jessica (Gary) Rieder of Clearwater; sister-in-law, Joy (Mark) Petroske of Becker; mother-in-law, Alice Moening of Melrose; brothers-in-law, Randy (Sue) Moening, Danny (Melinda) Moening, Ricky (Janel) Moening all of Melrose; 4 grandchildren and one on the way and several nieces and nephews.

Loretta A. Renneker

Loretta A. Renneker, age 82 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at her home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, February 23 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose.

Loretta Ann Dullinger was born October 19, 1939 in Collegeville, Minnesota to Louis and Frances (Kruse) Dullinger. She went to country school until moving to Holdingford, where she graduated from Holdingford High School. She worked as a nurse’s aide in Melrose before the new hospital was built. Loretta met her future husband, Alcuin, while attending dances with her aunt and uncle in New Munich. The couple was married on September 24, 1959 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Holdingford. They farmed and lived on the farm that Alcuin grew up on and years later moved two miles down the road to the Zitur farm. Loretta and Alcuin retired from farming and their daughter, Julie, took over the farm. Loretta then worked at Jennie-O for 18 years and at Burger King for eight years.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, St. Elizabeth’s Society, Christian Mothers, Pioneer Club, and in 2012 was crowned Queen of the Pioneer Club. Loretta enjoyed quilting, gardening, bird watching, collecting angels, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Joan (Mike) Gerads of Freeport, Julie (Jerry) Gerads of Melrose, Jean Kidrowski of Willmar, Jeanette (Tom) Gerads of Freeport, Jill (Ray) Kurowski of Long Prairie, Janice (Dave) Guse of Holdingford, and Jodi Johnson of Long Prairie; 29 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother, Bob (Deb) Dullinger of Stillwater; brothers and sisters-inlaw, Loren Groff, Joe and Kathy Herdering, and Marcie Wochnick.

Loretta was preceded in death by her husband, Alcuin Renneker on April 9, 2018; parents; son, Jim Renneker on May 1, 2018; infant daughter, Mary Renneker; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sisters, Dorothy Groff, Marlene Richards, and Mary Margaret Dullinger; brothers and sisters-in-law, John Richards, Celestine and Bernice Fischback, Daniel and Juanita Schlangen, Franky and Joyce Boeckermann, and Leroy Wochnick.

Vernon W. Lindemann

Vernon W. “Vern” Lindemann, age 81 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

V e r n o n William Lindemann was born August 4, 1940 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Michael and Margaret (Winters) Lindemann.

On August 11, 1962 he was united in marriage to Barbara (Gray) at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Vern’s professional life covered a wide area of fields and locations. He served on the Excelsior Police Department for over 20 years.

After leaving the police force he spent several years as a professional photographer. In his forties he earned his master’s degree in organizational development and held positions in Sacramento, CA; Columbus, OH and Chanhassen, MN as well as travels across the country. The work Vern enjoyed most was landscaping, providing his skills to nursing homes, hospitals, backyards, and Barb’s garden. The role Vern lived for was Husband and Partner to his wife Barbie.

Survivors include his son, Scott (Sherri) Lindemann of Rosemount; three grandchildren, Megan, Mike, and Sam, sister, Lorraine Kollman of Sauk Centre; and brothers, Albert (Myrna) Lindemann of Avon and Howard (Janet) Lindemann of Alexandria.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lindemann on August 26, 2016; parents; brothers and sisters, Donald Lindemann, Irma Armstrong, Norbert Lindemann, and Irene Wolbeck; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Lindemann.

Michele E. Siefert

Michele E. Seifert, age 46 of Burtrum, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at her home in Grey Eagle, Minnesota.

A celebration of life will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle.

Michele Evelyn Stalboeger was born July 17, 1975 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Robert and Gretchen (Lundgren) Stalboeger. After high school, Michele lived and worked in the Fargo – Moorhead area. She was united in marriage to Andrew Seifert on April 20, 1999 in Watertown, South Dakota. After marriage, the couple worked together in restaurants in Breckenridge and Fergus Falls. They moved to Burtrum in 2003.

Both Michele and Andrew cooked at the Hub Supper Club and at the café in Swanville. For the last 12 years, they have been working at the Double R in Grey Eagle. Michele loved to try out new recipes and loved taking care of her garden and her beloved pets.

Survivors include her husband, Andrew Seifert of Burtrum; parents, Bob and Gretchen Stalboeger of Calloway; brothers, Troy Stalboeger of Mahnomen, Robert Stalboeger of Mahnomen, and James (Deanna) Stalboeger of West Fargo; mother-in-law, Linda Wershing of Grey Eagle; sister-in-law, Nicole Griffin of Boulder, Colorado; and nieces and nephews.

Michele was preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Stalboeger; and nephew, Ian Stalboeger.

Mildred Kociemba

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Mildred “Millie” Kociemba, age 94 of Grey Eagle will be 11:00 AM. Friday, February 25 at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Millie died Wednesday at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany. There will be a visitation after 9:00 AM Friday the 25th, until the time of the service.

Millie was born September 11, 1927, in Oak Township, Stearns County, to Frank and Anna (Schulzetenberg) Hoppe. She grew up in New Munich and married Edward Kociemba on June 24, 1947, in New Munich. Millie and Ed owned the Kociemba Grocery in Bowlus before moving to Big Birch Lake in 1967. Millie enjoyed reading, music and attending daily mass. She also enjoyed being with her family and watching her grandchildren play baseball and football. She was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and the Christian Women’s Group.

Millie is survived by her children; Renee Hennemann, Avon; Jerry (Gail) Kociemba, Andover; Jim (Terry) Kociemba, Citrus Heights, CA; Carol (Pat) Kavaney, St. Cloud; and Mary (Dan) Sand, Grey Eagle. She is also survived by her sister, Jeanette Kaschmitter, St. Martin, 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Anna Hoppe, her sister, Lucille Meyer; Son-in-law, Fred “Rick” Hennemann and greatgrandson, Patrick Mahoney.

Arthur P. “Art” Schloegl

Arthur P. “Art” Schloegl, age 73 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, February 25 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Parish prayers will be at 4 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Arthur Peter Schloegl was born September 30, 1948 in Melrose, Minnesota to Leo and Percilla (Meyer) Schloegl. After high school, Art enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1968. He was united in marriage to Bonnie Henry on March 9, 1968 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. To this union, three children were born. In his younger years, Art worked at various packing plants. In 1973, Art and Bonnie purchased a farm southeast of Grey Eagle to raise the kids. Family farms were dying out they sold the farm in 1985. Art began doing construction remodeling various packing plants for 15 years. He then started over the road hauling repairable cars all over the United States until his retirement. During retirement, Art enjoyed fishing, family gatherings, and most of all, his grandkids. He was always a man you could go to for advice, serving as a mentor.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Art enjoyed hunting, fishing, and having cookouts with family and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Bonnie Schloegl; children, Tammy Bruder, Jason Schloegl, and Jamie Schloegl; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, George Schloegl and Darryl (Lisa) Ilgen.

Art was preceded in death by his daughter, Nicole Schloegl in 2020; parents; brother, Warren (Marcy) Schloegl; sisters, Joanie Bueckers and Joyce Carrier; sister-in-law, Jean Schloegl; niece, Jodi Scholegl; and nephew, Eric Schloegl.

Betty J. Schmitz, age 81 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Saturday, February 19, 2022 at Country Manor Care Center in Sartell, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, February 24 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating.

Betty Jane Marr was born March 26, 1940 in Corwith, Iowa to Glen and Dorothy (Delong) Marr. Betty graduated from Sauk Centre High School and furthered her education at Alexandria Technical College. She was united in marriage to Leon Schmitz on February 7, 1959 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Betty worked at Sauk Centre Public Schools, Sauk Centre Chamber of Commerce, Catholic Charities/Centra Minnesota, and was a supervisor for the Foster Grandparent Program.

Betty’s early life was one of travelling between Iowa and California before finally settling in Minnesota in 1972. Betty and Leon remained in the Sauk Centre region until Betty started wintering in Mesa AZ in 2008. Betty returned to Central Minnesota in 2018 when her health restricted her body, but never her mind and spirit She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Sauk Centre Hospice Board, Sauk Centre Senior Center Board, Lake Area Volunteer Association, National Senior Service Corp., St. Paul’s Christian Women, and the American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary. Betty enjoyed being surrounded by family where meals/feasts were always a draw for those far and wide. Betty enjoyed traveling, playing cards as well as learning new card games.

Betty also enjoyed the time with family and friends at Fairy Lake where ironically her life in Minnesota began in 1958 in a tiny house on the northwest side of the lake with the Marr family.

Survivors include her children Alan (DeeAnn) Schmitz of Emmetsburg IA, Randy (Angie) Schmitz of Prior Lake, Pam (Ed) Christian of Celina TX, Paul (Molly) Schmitz of Woodbury, and Laura Newman (Kyle) of Sartell; 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; sisters Mary (Brad) Grems, Anita (Mike) Duncan, Linda Johnson, and Gene (Cliff) Garbett.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Schmitz on September 27, 2002, infant son, Leon Jr., as well as her parents Glen and Dorothy Marr.

Donations be made in Betty’s memory to the Catholic Charities, specifically the Foster Grandparent Program, Cancer Society or your local Hospice program.

Nova weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long.

She has a big sister Zoe, 5 years old at home.

Walker David Wensmann

Kirby and Emily Wensmann of Melrose are proud to announce the birth of their son, Walker David Wensmann, born on Monday, February 21, 2022 at 7:41 a.m. at CentraCare Health-Melrose Hospital.

Walker weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 20 inches long.

He has a brother Brantley and sister Adeline, both at home.

Grandparents are Kevin and Karen Wensmann of Melrose, and Dave and Lisa Vogel of Melrose. Greatgrandparents are Harriet Froelich of Melrose, and Mildred Wensmann of Melrose.

Janet Mary Berge

Janet Mary Berge was born on June 5, 1960, the daughter of Harold and Doris (Hoare) Hedin of rural Pillsbury.

Janet graduated from Swanville High School and soon after moved to Minneapolis and started working as a medical secretary.

Years later Janet moved back to Swanville to raise her children. She started an inhome daycare and later worked for a short time at the locker plant before obtaining a job in the banking industry – where she excelled and truly enjoyed her work and work family!

Janet met Kenneth Berge and after dating for three years they were married in 1995 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Swanville. Janet and Kenny’s union joined their families, a total of five children.

Janet was smart, witty and one of the most caring and generous souls. She welcomed people with open arms and teased them with her great sense of humor. She was known for her stories and oneliners, often told while camping and traveling with friends and family. She enjoyed long drives by truck or 4-wheeler, not necessarily with a destination in mind but for the enjoyment of the view and company. Above all, Janet loved being a mom and grandma and opened her heart and door to all of her family and friends.

Janet went to heaven on Thursday, February 10, 2022, at her home surrounded by her family.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Kenny Berge; children, Jeremy (Kristin) Peterson, Julianne (Andrew) Peterson, Ashley (Chris) Stout, Kenny (Ashley) Berge, Casey (Sammi) Berge; grandchildren, Josie, Joy, Eli, Michael, Grace, Evelyn, Charlie, Ruthie and Clarabelle; sister, Irene (Rich) Allord; brother, Howard (Cheryl) Hedin; many nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Doris Hedin.

The family would like to give special thanks to DiAnn Loven and the St. Croix Hospice staff for the great care and compassion they gave to Janet during her final weeks. The amount of time needed for an executor to handle your affairs when you’re gone could be enormous. Depending on the complexity of your estate, it could take months—or even years. Once you settle on someone as executor, be honest with them about all the responsibilities that come with the job. And if you’re unable to find someone appropriate, you can always hire a professional executor.

-Karole Dear Karole, Some people play single stocks on onetime investments like this, but I don’t like that idea. Single stock investments don’t consistently generate the kind of returns over long periods of time that a good mutual fund will. Why sell yourself short?

When it comes to investing, I consider 10 years or more to be a long time. That being the case, I’d suggest a growth stock or growth and income mutual fund with a solid track record of 10 to 20 years.

Dear Motor Medics, I travel 50 miles each way to work each day and share the road with a lot of large longhaul trucks. It seems that they always think they own the road. They are either going too fast or too slow or cutting me off or any other number of things that seem just plain rude to me.

Why can’t they be more like other vehicles on the road? Not to say that all other vehicles are perfect drivers but it just seems as though the trucks are worse.

You have to remember that even the largest SUV, is a high-performance sports car when compared to a multi-ton truck. When you pull onto the interstate you can adjust your speed to stay clear of the trucks much faster than they can. Don’t expect them to move quickly for you and never position yourself directly in front of a truck, if you stop quickly, they can’t. If you feel you are being cut off often where are you driving? If you can’t see their mirrors then the driver can’t see you. Don’t hog the passing lane going the speed limit either. They are slow uphill and fast down so share the road and leave the enforcement to the officers.

Upsala City • February 7, 2022 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Lana Bartells, Crystal Benson, and Mitch Lange.

Staff present: First Response President Garrett Doucette, Planning & Zoning Chair Don Marty, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, City Engineer Clif Allen, and City Clerk-Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Swearing In of New Council Member: Stevens swore in newly appointed Councilmember Wendy Rene; she will fill Brian Lange’s position until the end of 2022.

Minutes: Bartells moved to approve minutes from January 3, 2021, City Council Meeting, 2nd

by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Lange moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Clif Allen with Moore Engineering presented the plan to extend Walnut Ave to the west.

Benson moved to approve the plans and authorize Moore Engineering to issue invitations to bid, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Doucette updated the council on the Fire Department’s activities including the new turnout gear being put into service at the end of January. Ron Carlson has been appointed Captain – filling Brian Lange’s position.

Bartells moved approve Duke Lange to re-joining the UFD provided he completes all required trainings before going on a fire call, 2nd by Benson.

Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Chief Nick Johnson would like to update the fees for fire calls.

First Response Team: First Response Team President Doucette reported the calls for January.

He also explained the need for all buildings within the city limits to have house numbers for emergency calls.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels as well as the various tasks done throughout the City. Tschida also discussed the rehabilitation of Well #4. Tschida was directed to get a new bid to rehab Well #4.

The manhole by Upsala Motors has inflow that cannot be fixed by city staff. The council directed staff to hire Thul Specialties to repair that manhole and any other manholes this spring.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the February Calendar and reported on the projects worked on in January.

Planning Commission: Planning & Zoning Chair Don Marty explained the Planning & Zoning Commission is down two members; they are cur-

rently looking for new members. Marty explained proposed Waste Collection Ordinance. Rene moved to hold a public hearing to review the proposed Waste Collection Ordinance on March 7, 2022, on or after 7:20 p.m., 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Marty also reviewed the proposed Septic System Ordinance. Benson moved to hold a public hearing to review the proposed Septic System Ordinance March 7, 2022, on or after 7:25 p.m., 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Unfinished Business: Upsala Senior Living: Johnson stated the trusses are up and the structure will be enclosed in the near future.

Heritage Days Meeting: Bartells reminded everyone of the Heritage Days Meeting on February 15 at 7:00 p.m.

Utility Bill Comparison: Stevens reviewed the utilities for the new city hall location compared to the costs when Toning Plus was renting the same space.

Local Board of Appeal and Equalization: The LBAE will be April 20 at 1:00 p.m. at City Hall.

Lange and Bartells updated their training and will be qualified through 2025.

City Hall Open House: The Open House for the new city hall space will be February 15 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Johnson, Rene, Bartells, and Lange said they could attend. Stevens will post a notice that two or more council members will be attending the open house.

New Business: Morrison Community-Wide Garage Sale in May: Stevens explained the proposed County-Wide garage sale which coincides with the regular City-Wide garage sale in Upsala May 18, 19, 20 and 21. There would be a $10.00 fee to get on the County Community-Wide Garage Sale docket; this would include advertising in the MC Record, and the St. Cloud Times/Brainerd Dispatch, a number & sign, and maps available to shoppers. Benson moved to have the City of Upsala participate in the Morrison County Community Wide garage sale, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

From the Desk of Pastor Bruce When was the last time your faith was either tested or challenged? Most of you would say, “I have faith in God!” But I would challenge your faith in this article. I don’t mean challenge as in question, but to have you question what you actually mean by faith?

When I hear the statement, “I have faith in God” I automatically think, this person believes that when he/she dies; they will go to heaven. So, here is my challenge, if you have enough faith here on earth to believe that when your heart stops beating that you will automatically jump from the grave and into the loving arms of Jesus, then I have to say, wow! That is some faith.

Hebrews 11:1 says, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” I think some people are going to be surprised.

We have faith in the supernatural simply because it does not take any action on our part now. We can believe something about eternity because it does not affect the way we see things in the present. What are you saying Pastor Bruce? Here are some questions to ponder this week. Can I trust that God cares about me now? Can I trust that God will not harm me?
