Everyone is in sales. To me, job titles don’t matter. Everyone has to be thinking about sales. It’s the only way any company can stay in business.

There are no jobs if you don’t bring the business through the front door.

That’s why I have a sign on my office door, “If you know where you can get us some business, come on in.”

At our company, a sales mindset is a requirement. From the factory floor to the reception desk to the boardroom, figuring out what the customer wants and finding a way to deliver it must be

A while back I received an email from a loyal reader who used to be in sales but switched to information technology as a help desk technician.

Even though he was now on the side of delivering service rather than sales, he understands the personalized approach with customers, be it computer operators, network administrators or engineers.

He wrote: “When it comes to identifying and resolving technical issues, it’s important to remember the human side of technology. I only have the phone to work with but quite often those little or long pauses while waiting for a procedure to cycle through or a test result to return can be used to build rapport, ease tension or otherwise get to know the other person(s) on the line.

“The important thing to keep in mind here in taking advantage of these opportunities is that these people talk to the people who ultimately buy the company’s services. If the service they receive at any point along the line is poor, or if the vendors’ techs are impersonal or worse – abrasive or condescending, the sales person talking with the decision maker is going to have a rough time of it when it comes to

renewing the contract.”

So you can see how having a sales mindset – no matter what role in the company – can have an impact on sales.

From the moment we get up in the morning to the time we go to bed, we are negotiating, communicating, persuading and influencing. If we aren’t selling products or services, we are selling ideas.

If you want to be successful in sales, remember the 4 Ws and the H. • WHO? Know your customers.

Get into the mind of your buyer – what does he or she really want? What do they really need? Sometimes those two options are not the same, so be prepared to guide them to the best solution for their situation.

• WHAT? Target a clear outcome.

Before approaching a customer, be certain of what you want to achieve. In some cases you may not be seeking an immediate sale, but more information about what the customer wants. Walk in with a clear plan – and backup options – so you aren’t wasting their time or yours.

• WHY? Listen to people.

Successful selling isn’t about talking to customers but listening to their needs so you can find out how your product or service can help. Asking questions is Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Jim Jewell

Many of us have had the pleasure of knowing someone who they feel was a “special” person.

This “special” person may be special due to their physical abilities, mechanical abilities, mental abilities, spiritual devotion or their caring nature for others. Many times those traits are not realized until after the person is no longer with us.

These stories are about a person who possessed all of the previously mentioned attributes and was not afraid to accept challenges that most of us would avoid. Many friends and neighbors stopped at their farm to visit special friends, have a cup of coffee and see what new project Jim was creating.

Jim was born in Michigan in 1941.

His memorable youthful experiences included falling out of the hay mow and landing on his head on the cement 10 feet below him. It knocked him out and his recovery lasted over a month.

The next childhood experience of note was when he and his two brothers were discovered in the woods pounding on a metal object with wooden sticks. The parent recognized the object to be an unexploded Air-force bomb. The kids were quickly ushered from the area and the military removed the bomb.

Jim then married Nancy and tried farming, which didn’t offer enough

challenge to hold his interest. One Thanksgiving day, when he was about 23, Nancy went to his shop to tell him to clean up, since the family was going to her mother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner.

He told her that he wouldn’t be going, since unbeknownst to her, he was starting flying lessons that day. This created some concern in the family.

The flying lessons were completed and he received his private and commercial licenses. He loved to fly and he and his buddy developed a game. The game consisted of flying over a field and shooting blown-up balloons on the ground. Of course, the winner was the one who deflated the most balloons.

It wasn’t all play, since he soon began to fly his plane commercially doing aerial photography for sale and use by the Ag Department. One interesting experience was in Nebraska, when he suddenly encountered an extremely thick fog. The only ground marking he could recognize was a railroad tracks.

He flew about 10 feet over the tracks until an “oh s---” moment occurred, because a train appeared coming toward him. He pulled back on the “stick” and reached enough altitude to miss the train.

critical … and pay attention to the other person’s problems before offering your solution.

• WHEN? Get to the point quickly.

Once you determine that you have what the customer needs, resist the urge to launch into a lengthy lecture about what you have to offer. Pick one or two of the customer’s most important needs and briefly demonstrate how you can help.

Customers buy on their schedule, not yours. Contact them frequently (without getting annoying) so they learn to think of you when they have a problem you can help them solve.

• HOW? Solve customers’ problems.

Address their needs, large and small, and show how you can help them. And here’s some advice that some might consider heresy: If you can’t help them, refer them to someone who can. There will be times your product or service isn’t the best fit, and your customer will appreciate your willingness to put their needs first.

Don’t forget to measure your results. Keep track of successes and

failures. Analyze what helped you succeed and where you may have slipped up. Identify some best practices that have led to success, and incorporate them into every customer interaction.

Keeping score of your record can help you stay motivated and productive during dry spells, and reinvigorate you when you’re doing well.

from the local farms. Neither of these jobs interested Jim, however he began trapping wild game and continued to fly airplanes.

Jim continued as a trapper and one season caught close to 200 fox in 10 days. They then began raising silver fox.

One needs to remember that during the time Jim was trapping, the price of a fox hide, properly prepared, would be worth as much as $50.00. He also trapped mink, otter, nutria, muskrats and beaver.

He also became a fur buyer, which brought many more hides to their farm. One interesting story, which occurred during

the silver fox farming, was when a fox mother refused to accept one of her pups and the little fox needed a mother.

A cat just had kittens and the little fox was accepted and nursed by the cat.

However, the fox thought it was a cat and tried to do all the things the other kittens did. As the family grew older, the fox grew larger than the rest of the kittens, but was totally accepted by the whole family.

Obituaries Mamie Genevieve Thompson

Services celebrating the life of Mamie G. Thompson, 101, Upsala was held at 1:00 PM Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Upsala.

Pastor Steve Olson officiated and burial was in the Elmdale Lutheran Cemetery. Mamie died peacefully with family at her side at the Long Prairie nursing home.

Arrangements were entrusted to Miller-Carlin Funeral Home, Upsala.

Mamie was born on October 5, 1915 to Charlie and Mary (Hall) Wedin in Perkins, MI and she was one of five children. After the early deaths of her parents before she was 5 years old, Mamie was raised by Axel & Carrie Borgstrom in Upsala where she attended the local school. When she was 21, Mamie married Orval Thompson and they had three children. She worked hard

to raise a family while they ran a small farm together. After only 54 years of marriage, Orval passed away and Mamie continued to live on the farm. She was an independent woman who enjoyed baking, gardening, and wildflowers. Always energetic, Mamie was quite proud of having crossed Mackinac Bridge over Lake Michigan without stopping (that’s five miles) at age 84! She was always on the go, and it wasn’t until she was 96 years old that she entered Valley View Assisted Living. Mamie loved spending time with her family and watching five generations gather together. Having been baptized, confirmed, and married there, she was truly a lifelong member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala.

Mamie is survived by her children James “Jim” (Laurie) Thompson, Breckinridge, MI; Darrel Thompson, Long Prairie; Mary Lou Theisen, Grey Eagle; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; as well as many other family and friends.

She is greeted in Heaven by her loving husband Orval, her parents, her four siblings Pearl, Estelle, Helen, and Clarence, four grandchildren, and her daughter-in-law Rosemary.

Elizabeth “Betty” Schimmel

Elizabeth “Betty” Schimmel, 85 years, 5 months and 6 days, Grey Eagle passed away peacefully on Friday, February 3, 2017 after a rich life with family and friends.

Elizabeth “Betty” Theresa Va n H a v e r m e a t was born August 28, 1931 in North Germany Township, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry and Lizzie (Huhne) VanHavermeat. She was the youngest of 11 children. She grew up and attended school in Stearns County. At age 19, on November 22, 1949, she and Ervin Ceminski were united in marriage. During thirteen years of marriage they were blessed with four children. Betty then married Fred Schimmel on June 15, 1970 and they enjoyed 13 happy years together before Fred’s death in 1983.

Betty’s working career included farming, a cook, waitress, childcare and then joining and retiring from Jennie-O-Foods after many years. She enjoyed the view of Little Birch Lake from her home where she met many great, helpful and caring neighbors.

Spending time with her children, grand,

great, and great-great grandchildren always brightened her day and was a highlight of her life. She especially enjoyed time fishing and dancing with husband, Fred. Some of her free time was spent enjoying snowmobiling, riding the four-wheeler and later watching the many small birds, hawks and bald eagle pair in the neighborhood. Betty had a good sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh.

She is survived by her children, Denny Ceminski, Park Rapids; Rita (Dennis) Reimer, Fargo; David Ceminski, Grey Eagle; and Dan (Marsha) Ceminski, Breckenridge; seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren as well as one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by one sister, Maryann (Ben) Kiffmeyer of Wells, MN. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, five brothers; Henry, Norbert, Raymond, John and Louis VanHavermeat; four sisters; Annie Bruggenthies; Loretta VanHavermeat; Margaret Rasmussen; Frances “Red” Terwey.

Her wishes will be honored to have her ashes placed in Lakeview Cemetery next to her late husband, Fred Schimmel, who preceded her 33 years earlier. Her children will be announcing a spring ‘Celebration of Betty’s Life’ and interment in early May 2017.

Martha Gosiak

M a r t h a Gosiak, age 89 of Swan River To w n s h i p , Morrison County died Sunday, February 19 at her home surrounded by her loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, February 22 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus with Father Greg Mastey officiating. The burial was held in the parish cemetery.

Martha Gertrude Psick was born April 7, 1927 in Swan River Township, Morrison County to the late Alex and Sophie Psick.

She attended rural country school in Swan River Township. Martha worked at Munsignwear in Little Falls and Armor Meat Packing in St. Paul as a young women.

Martha was united in marriage to Ambrose Gosiak on June 13, 1945. The couple made their home on the family farm north of Bowlus in Swan River Township. Martha was a full time homemaker, mother, farmer

Gerald Donald Fuchs G e r a l d Fuchs, 81 year old resident of Bowlus, MN died Monday, February 20 at the St. Cloud VA. A gathering of friends and family will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Monday, February 27 at the Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls with Parish Prayers at 7 P.M. The burial will be held on Tuesday, February 28 at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery North of Little Falls, MN. Gerald Donald Fuchs was born August 12, 1935 in Lynden, Minnesota to the late Joseph and Carolyn (Lens) Fuchs. Gerald enlisted into the United States Army from May 19, 1954 until March 7, 1956. Gerald was united in marriage to Linda Unterburger on December 6, 1971 in Milbank, S.D. The couple lived in Jacobs Prairie before moving to Bowlus where they made their home on their family farm for several years.

Gerald had a passion for farming and could often be found watching his steers.

He enjoyed football and baseball, and he rooted for his favorite teams the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and hunting.

Donald Wensmann

D o n a l d Wensmann, age 90 of Elmdale, MN died on Sunday, February 19 at the St. Cloud VA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, February 23 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Jeremy Theis.

D o n a l d A n t h o n y Wensmann was born on May 11, 1926 in Melrose to the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kolb) Wensmann. He served his country during the Korean War from May 15, 1951 until his honorable discharge on April 24, 1953. He was an engineer in the military.

Donald returned to home and was united in marriage to the love of his life, Rita Zierden. The couple made their home in rural Elmdale, where they farmed and raised their family for over 49 years. Rita died on March 1, 2002 and Donald continued living on the family farm. Donald’s family will remember him for his big heart, strong hand and a special love for his family. He enjoyed

Virden M. Olson, age 93 of Sauk Centre passed away Saturday, February 18, 2017 at CentraCare Health Care Center in Sauk Centre, surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church with Father Suhdansu Kumar and Father Andrew Marthaler concelebrating. A family inurnment service will be held in Saint Paul’s Cemetery, Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, Feb. 22th at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church.

Virden Manford Olson was born April 11, 1923 in Osakis, Minnesota, the son of Palmer Victor and Lilly Maude (Coons) Olson. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Canada where he lived until he was 12 years old. In April 1946, Virden joined the US Army Air Force. He obtained the rank of Corporal and was discharge from his military duties October 17, 1947. While in the US Army Air Force, he was united in marriage to Mary Mae E. Minette in St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Virden and Mary Mae lived on the East Coast for one year before returning to Sauk Centre where they farmed and raised their family. Upon

Survivors include: seven sons, Kenneth (Debbie) of Bowlus, Jim (Julie) of Bowlus, Greg (Renee) of Upsala, Brian (Lisa) of Bowlus, Marvin (Shirley) of Upsala, Joel (Laura) of Sartell, Scott (Jen) of Upsala; six daughters, Diane (Ken) Roske of Freeport, Cynthia (Donald) Wensmann of St. Cloud, Brenda (Ken) Yorek of Little Falls, Sandra (Tom) Herdering of Freeport, Wanda (Barry) Rathbun of St. Cloud, Jessica (Gary) Rieder of Clearwater; daughter-in-law, Joy (Mark) Petroske of Becker; siblings, Marian (Bernie) Brisk of Pierz, Dorothy Roering of Melrose, Adolph (Mildred) Wensmann of Melrose; 50 grandchildren; 46 greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Wensmann on March 1, 2002; children, infant son, Joseph Wensmann, Mark Wensmann, Doris Landowski, Wayne Wensmann; three grandsons and two greatgrandchildren; siblings, Mildred Winkels, Marcella Bueckers, Rosemary Steffens, Jerome Wensmann, Herbert Wensmann, Veronica Smude and Leroy Wensmann.

his retirement in 2005, Virden and Mary Mae moved into Sauk Centre. Virden then began to deliver newspapers for the Sauk Centre Herald and continued delivering till his mid-80s. He also enjoyed running parts for Friedrichs Tire & Oil in Sauk Centre.

One of Virden’s greatest joys was attending sporting events for his children and grandchildren. He tried to never miss a Wrestling match, gymnastics meet, or any of the games his kids were participating in.

Virden loved to participate in tractor pulling events, bowling, playing horseshoes and shooting pool. He and Mary Mae celebrated an important milestone in 2016 – their 70th wedding anniversary!

Virden was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the American Legion Post in Little Sauk, Minnesota.

He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Mary Mae of Sauk Centre; 13 children, Bonnie Jo (John) Nagel of Little Falls, Linda (Wayne) Thom of Swanville, Perry Olson of Long Prairie, Sandra (Larry) Thom of Melrose, Lonney (Nancy) Olson of Sauk Centre, Jody Olson (Kimberly Schmidt) of Sauk Centre, Kim (Sherry) Olson of Sauk Centre, Lance Olson (Beth Carstens) of Sauk Centre, Michelle Rust (Keith Nygaard) of Belgrade, Todd (Sandy) Olson of Sauk Centre, Patrice Koshiol of Paynesville, Marty (Heather) Olson of Little Sauk, and Shannon Marie of Sauk Centre; 37 grandchildren; 41 great grandchildren and one sister, Myrtle Judes of Sauk Centre.

Virden was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Gladys Grove, Lorraine McQuery, and Geraldine Olson as a young girl.

Anna C. Herickhoff, age 106, of Elrosa passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota with her family at her side.

Anna Caroline was born November 17, 1910 in rural Saint Rosa, Minnesota, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” and Frances (Stoermann) Boecker. On April 8, 1931, Anna was united in marriage to Bernhard “Ben” Herickhoff, a German immigrant.

The couple farmed three miles south of Elrosa. Anna was an ardent supporter of her husband’s business, her children, and her community. She always had a positive attitude and a strong faith. Anna was an active member of her church, the Christian Mothers Society, and Daughters of Isabella. Over the years, she entertained many German visitors. She wrote and spoke German her entire life. Anna and Ben retired to Elrosa in 1974. They were married 62 years when Ben died in 1993.

After retirement, Anna attended daily mass. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, reading, singing, embroidery and quilting,

She is survived by her ten children, Lawrence (Marlene) Herickhoff of St. Paul, Irene (Ed) Harren of Freeport, Rita Walz of Belgrade, Dr. Robert (Pam) Herickhoff of Mankato, Charles Herickhoff of Crystal, James (Ruth) Herickhoff of Fort Collins, CO, Norma (Joe) Moening of Sauk Centre, Marie (Ken) Bezdicek of Arden Hills, Mark (Donna) Herickhoff of Elrosa, Bernie (Linda) Herickhoff of Villard; nephew, Henry (Vickie) Herickhoff of Sauk Centre; 41 grandchildren; 102 great grandchildren; and 32 great great grandchildren.

Abigail Rose Herickhoff will sing a solo during the mass. James Herickhoff, Charles Herickhoff, and Lawrence Herickhoff will carry the communion gifts and Dacia Herickhoff and Jordan Herickhoff will be mass servers.

There is a beautiful theme in this Psalm. In the first several verses the writer seems to be having a difficult time seeing God. Then, suddenly, God’s Spirit jarred his thinking and brought God’s grace to his attention. When he finally puts things into context, he recalled that it was God who controls everything and it was his God who was the One who parted the waters and led the Israelites to safety. Those who were drown and destroyed by the “mighty waters” could not see their “misfortune” as God performing a miracle. But those whom He saved did!

And so it is today. Those who have been redeemed by the love, mercy and grace of God see His miracles in their lives every day. When we pray, He answers. If we become sick, He heals.

When we need forgiveness, He alone can remove our guilt. When others abandon us, He is a friend who stands beside us. When we grieve, He comforts us. When we are stressed, He calms our heart. When we have nothing, He meets our needs. Our God performs miracles.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Much-needed Eagle’s Nest work gets off the ground Saw a beautiful sight over the weekend. We drove to Sauk Centre last Saturday to visit the Eagle’s Healing Nest and attend a fund-raiser going on there. As we turned off the highway and drove up the treelined entrance of the complex, we saw workers up on top of one of the buildings. They were lining up and attaching roof trusses on a flat portion of the roof of the building that formerly served as the school gymnasium.

It did my heart good to see work finally proceeding on the project of re-roofing the 24 buildings on the campus of the former girls’ school. Built by the state, starting in the early 1900s, these large structures are in great need of maintenance to alleviate water damage, which has already occurred in some of the buildings.

The roofing project is another example of how the Nest operates. Largely, it’s been through donations from a generous public and volunteer work by those who understand the importance of providing a place where our veterans can come to heal with honor. The 70 vets who live there assist each other and can heal at their own pace.

three years ago in the bonding bill. But because of liability issues, we could never work out a method of actually getting the money to the Nest. We tried and tried, but couldn’t work around the statute governing state funding of charitable organizations.

But the leaky roofs kept leaking, and the need for repairs kept growing larger. So, thanks to some sizeable donations from individuals and several large building material companies, the work is finally getting done. And, to make the story even better, veterans from the Nest are doing some of the work, with the possibility of additional work for the same contractor after the Nest job has been completed.

It’s a sizeable undertaking. But with the donations that came in last weekend at a fund raiser, it put the project over the top. There should be enough money to finish all the buildings at the Nest! Congratulations to Melony, Todd and all the others at the Nest for not giving up and seeing this project all the way through to the end. I think we’ll see even more good things happening soon at the Eagle’s Healing Nest!

It’s town hall meeting time in District 12B this Friday. Sen. Torrey Westrom and I will meet with constituents at three locations in the district, starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday. It should be a good time to learn about happenings at the Capitol in St. Paul, and at the same time an opportunity for the Senator and I to hear about concerns from district residents. Upsala City Special Meeting February 13, 2017 These are unapproved minutes.

Call to Order/Attendance: The Special City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 p.m. Johnson led the pledge of allegiance.

On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, and Dennis Westrich.

People present: Frank Koopmeiners, Public Works; Scott Hedlund, S.E.H. Engineering, and Michelle Stevens, Clerk/Treasurer.

Borgstrom Street Costs: The council reviewed the cost of the Borgstrom Street Sewer Project.

The council directed City Engineer Scott Hedlund to calculate the cost from the manhole in the right-of-way to the property owner’s service to calculate the cost for each of the residents affected by the project.

Sewer Lining Project: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has stated that Upsala needs to address the issue of Inflow and Infiltration in the sewer lines. City Engineer Scott Hedlund discussed the memo he presented at the November City Council Meeting concerning the repairing of the sewer pipes including: active infiltration, broken or cracked pipes, evidence of past infiltration, service laterals, roots, sags, and obstruction.

Hedlund said the repairs would be a combination of lining and manhole rehabilitation and cutting in to repair and replace cracked or broken units.

Westrich moved to publish a Request for Qualifications as a first step in assessing the project, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Maintenance Building: Spec-

ifications for the new maintenance building were discussed.

Adjourn: Lange moved to adjourn at 8:49 p.m. 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held January 31, 2017 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Sup. Louis Thompson was absent. Others present: Brad and Becky Dawson, Joe Maciej, Don Tisdale, Launette Tisdale, Ron Schmidt, Rick Baum, and Erv Herdering.

The minutes from the regular meeting of December 27, 2016 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup .Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from Land Stewardship Project, Cutting Edge, notices of taxes received, Long Prairie Fire meeting, Swanville Relief Association meeting, and Planning and Zoning letter about issues in another township and board has no comment on.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 5369 through 5380: Rev. $2,185.44; R & B $12,864.25.

Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Forest Lane was discussed. A guest asked if the DNR is responsi-

ble for part of the improvements on this road as they are land owners on one side. The board did not get an answer to that question. Maciej Construction presented a bid to upgrade the road. The board noted that the description did not meet turnaround specifications. Someone will contact the DNR for an easement to enlarge the required turnaround. Question was asked if township can force the cost being put on a property owners taxes to pay for the road improvements.

Clerk will check with lawyer. Supervisors, road contractor, some land owners and construction company representative will meet on road to view, discuss and clarify more issues for road improvement.

Chairman Berscheit limited the speaker to 15 minutes for efficiency.

For the March 14, 2017 township election Sup. Berscheit made a motion to appoint Brenda Schwanke, Bonnie Alsleben, Theresa Holmgren as election judges with Shirley Hulinsky and Chuck Macy as alternates. Theresa Holmgren and Shirley Hulinsky will serve as the absentee ballot board. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor will work on snow plowing and sanding as needed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $111,253.90. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center. The books of the clerk and treasurer will be audited at the February meeting.

But the easiest way to attack this thing is by taking one slow, sure step at a time.

Try not to let worry consume you in the process, either.

First, sit down, take a deep breath, and open all the unopened bills. Throw away any duplicates, and keep only the most recent statements and notices.

The unknown is always scarier than the known, so facing the bills and cutting that stack in half right off the bat will help reduce a lot of your initial anxiety.

Next, let’s start a debt snowball.

List all the debts you owe, from smallest to largest, making one column for the payoff balance, one column for the amount you need to get current on that debt, and one column for the single payment amount when you get current.

Total each column — the payoff balance, the amount to get current, and the single payment. I promise it won’t be as bad as you think.

Finally, make a monthly budget.

Prioritize your needs, starting with food, utilities, house payments and transportation. When it comes to your debts, pay as much as you can on the smallest one while making minimum payments on all the others.

You can do this, Gail. If you’ll follow my plan, I think you’ll see improvement in several areas of your life and you’ll feel good about the progress you’re making, too!

February 15, 2017: At 22:17 David Ruda of Long Prairie was traveling northbound on County Road 33 south 130th Street, Grey Eagle when he struck a dog. The 2008 Chevrolet Impala he was driving sustained minor damage to the front passenger side. Ruda was not injured and the vehicle was driven from the scene.

February 18, 2017: At 01:55 Todd County Sheriffs Office along with Melrose Ambulance and Grey Eagle Fire Department responded to a one vehicle accident on County 19 near the Stearns County line. Joshua Peters, 29 of Long Prairie, fell asleep behind the wheel and went off the roadway colliding with trees. Minor injuries occurred during the accident.

February 18, 2017: At 08:40 Kathleen Parker of rural Grey Eagle contacted the Todd County Sheriff’s Office to report a burglary at her residence. She report that several items had been stolen, and that there was damage done to several pieces of machinery. 2017 Todd County Garden Day

The Todd County Master Gardeners in conjunction with the Sauk River Watershed will present the Todd County Garden Day on Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 401 4th St. South, Long Prairie, MN 56437.
