Persistence … It’s never too late -By Harvey Mackay We’ve all heard the expression “the greatest thing since sliced bread.” But how did sliced bread originate?

The Anecdote International website provides the story. In 1912, the son of a German immigrant had an idea: People might want to buy bread that was already sliced instead of having to cut it themselves. Otto Rohwedder was 32 when he had his brainstorm, and he spent five years developing the first commercial-grade machine for slicing bread.

Instant success, right? Not exactly. Even though his family and friends were sure it would be a big hit, it took Rohwedder 10 years to sell his first bread slicer.

The struggling Chillicothe Baking Company was the first company to purchase one. However, after using Rohwedder’s invention, sales rose 2,000 percent in a matter of months.

And once other companies saw how useful the bread slicing machine was, it began selling at a brisk pace. Soon every bakery wanted one. Sandwiches have never been the same.

Persistence and determination are what keep us hammering away. I don’t know any entrepreneurs who have achieved any level of success without those two traits. When you have a dream that you can’t let go of, trust your instincts and pursue it.

Author Malcolm Gladwell explained that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in something. 10,000 hours is roughly

5 hours of full-time work at 2,000 hours per year. If you do it as a hobby for 10 hours a week, it will take you 20 years to get to expert level.

We won’t all become experts, but we can all keep hammering away until we can make it work.

Look at some of the great inventions of our time, such as the telephone. Alexander Graham Bell approached American communications company Western Union and offered them the rights to his patent for $100,000, but company bigwigs balked at the proposal citing the “obvious limitations of his device, which is hardly more than a toy.” Undeterred, Bell established the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 and less than a decade later, more than 150,000 people were the proud owners of telephones in the USA. What do you suppose Bell would say about the phone in your pocket now?

Television is another invention that took a long time to get going. In 1926, American radio pioneer Lee De Forest said television was a commercial and financial impossibility.

Twenty years later, people were still not convinced. In 1946, film producer Darryl Zanuck said, “People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”

According to estimates, there were 123.8 million TV homes in the United States for the 2022-2023 TV season. And the number of TV households continues to grow.

Personal computers were much the same. In 1949, one year after the world’s first stored program computer made its debut, a mathematician declared: “We have reached the limit of what is possible to achieve with computer technology.” Even as the capabilities and functions of computers grew, there were naysayers like Ken Olson, founder of the computer company Digital Equipment Corp. who said in 1977 “there is no reason anyone

would want a computer in their home.”

Nearly 80 percent of all American households now own a computer. As a business owner I am grateful that their persistence paid off. I clearly remember the old school methods of ordering, production, delivery and follow-up.

I’ll take our office computers any day.

Cell phones also took a long time to catch on. My first cell phone from the 1980s was the size of a brick with a short-life battery.

Even Motorola, who pioneered the cell phone, failed to see its potential in 1981. Now we are lost without our cell phones.

Believe it or not, online shopping didn’t catch on for a long time either. In 1966, “Time Magazine” ran an article that claimed: “Remote shopping, while entirely feasible, will flop because women like to get out of the house, like to handle merchandise, like to be able to change their minds.” Approximately 76 percent of U.S. adults now shop online, and annual retail e-commerce sales hit $5 trillion worldwide. Imagine surviving the pandemic without the convenience and selection available from the gazillion websites that we browse daily.

All because someone saw the value in reaching a broader audience and didn’t stop until they figured out how to do it.

As Steve Martin said, “Thankfully, persistence is a great substitute for talent.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Going Places

The horses that we see today are usually pulling an Amish buggy on the road. They are usually very well groomed and about as beautiful as a horse can be. They are trained to pull the buggy at a fast walk, which creates a special rhythmic clip-clop that causes us observers to stop what we are doing and check out the source of the unusual sound.

They look like they are ready to participate in the track horse race.

In days past, the farmers couldn't afford to keep a horse that would be used only to pull a buggy. The horses they had were hard working horses that were accustomed to pulling heavy loads at a walking speed. They were not as attractive as the buggy horses, primarily due to the work they did and the size they needed to be. They usually didn't pull a buggy, since not all farmers had a buggy. They probably pulled a farm wagon that was suitable for many other uses than just moving people. The wagons were made to haul heavy loads, which meant that they were very rough to ride in. One needs to remember that the trails and sometimes the roads were not paved, but were rutted and had rocks and chuck holes on their surface. They, in most cases, would include many sharp turns to avoid trees and other terrain that the users of the trail couldn't drive through. These trails frequently followed fence lines and on occasion, went through fields and farmyards. I guess in those days the land owners were not as concerned about someone getting hurt on your property and taking the land owner to court.

Since the farm wagons were quite uncomfortable people frequently walked to their destinations. Not only was it about as fast, but to attach the horses to the wagon was also a job. The wagon probably needed to be unloaded and wiped off and the horses needed to be harnessed and attached to the wagon. Sometimes the horses felt that they would prefer to not pull a wagon to some far destination on a trail that happened to have deep ruts where they had to walk, when the pasture was available for grazing, rest and a good feet in the air back rub. It was less hassle to walk.

few stories tell of distances. In one case, a father walked from eastern Todd County to Sauk Centre, a distance of over 20 miles, on a Friday and returned home on Saturday. I don't know if he went to a dance Saturday night?

My Grandparents lived about 5 miles from their church. They walked there if the weather permitted, however Ma said that she fainted on the trail because the church had a rule that if you were going to take communion, it must be on an empty stomach. I don't know if she had a snack after that occurrence. My Grandfather walked over a mile through snow-covered fields and woods to go to his fish house 6 days a week no matter how cold it was. My Dad, while courting my mother, walked about 4 miles cross country, once a week, to visit.

He told of one occasion, when he got back to the farm, he decided to stop at the outhouse rather than walk down to the barn. He thought it seemed pretty cold on his bare butt and when he got to the house he checked the thermometer and it was -37. Another situation involved the purchase of a farm in Pillsbury and the herd of cows had to be moved from the previous farm in Monticello to the new location. The cattle were driven as a herd from the old location to the new one by walking behind the cows.

That was before there was a lot of traffic on the trails and land owners understood the need to cross properties.

I guess there wasn't much need to take medications to control weight.

and God has given us His instruction manual to tell us how. We cannot figure it out by ignoring the manual. I couldn’t do it with the Ninja coffee pot, and we surely cannot do it when it comes to things of Faith and Eternity.

Romans 10:16-17 says “But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our message?”

17 Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” The other thing is God’s Word doesn’t become obsolete just because we come to faith in Jesus Christ. We need to be students of God’s Word so that we will not be led astray. 2 Timothy 2:15 “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

So, my office coffee maker quit the other day. To tell you it didn’t bother me would be a lie. Seriously, I need to have a coffee maker in my office. I went two days without it, but today after a couple of hours; I drove home and made myself a cup of coffee.

Lori and I went to Costco for an ear appointment and to do some grocery shopping… and of course to see about replacing the coffee maker. We found a wonderful coffee maker, a Ninja, sounds like some sort of green creature. I unpacked it all and put all the pieces together and looked at all the buttons. I figured since I have run several kinds of coffee makers, I wouldn’t need to read the instructions.

Besides, I’m a man and men do not look at the instructions, they only look at the pictures. I ended up reading through the manual three times before I figured out how to make a Ninja cup of coffee.

Sometimes people have the same attitude as me when it comes to our faith. “I can do it myself!” sounds like my three-year-old grandson. The problem is, we cannot do it ourselves

Obituaries

Donna Mae E. Scholz

Donna Mae E. Scholz, age 94 of St. Francis, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 12, 2024, at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, February 17 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis with Rev. Jimmy Joseph officiating. Interment was at the parish cemetery.

Donna Mae Elizabeth Notch was born September 26, 1929 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to Herman and Veronica (Herzog) Notch. She attended country school in St. Francis from grades 1 through 8 and then attended Upsala Area Schools from the 9th through 12th grades and graduated in 1948. She was united in marriage to Arnold Scholz on June 25, 1952 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Donna Mae worked as a secretary at Upsala Area Schools until marriage, then helped her husband on their dairy farm where they lovingly raised eight children.

She was a faith filled woman and a lifetime member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where she was a member of the St. Francis Christian Mothers, Sewing Circle, choir, and a rosary leader for many years. Donna Mae had a love for flowers and enjoyed gardening, quilting, and sewing. She was an excellent cook and baker and could often be found looking at recipes. Donna Mae was a kind, loving and caring woman, putting other’s needs before her own. She was hard-working, having enduring strength and determination, as well as a most tender heart, especially for those going through difficult times.

Along with her Catholic faith, family was everything to her. Survivors include her children, Mary (Jim) Koczur of Upsala, JoAnn (Jeff) Mo of Sauk Rapids, Michael (Lori) Scholz of Bowlus, David (Renee) Scholz of Upsala, Denise (Joe) LaForce of Little Falls, Stephen (Bonita) Scholz of Melrose, Eugene (Hilary) Scholz of Wausau, Wisconsin, and James Scholz of St. Francis; 20 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; sister, Eileen (Don) Stiller of Rochester; and brother, Allen (Myrna) Notch of Freeport.

Donna Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Arnold Scholz on January 13, 2023; parents; son, Joseph Scholz; greatgranddaughter, Zita Storey; and brothers, Roger Notch and Denis Notch.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Melrose.

Catherine M. Primus, age 94 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on We d n e s d a y, February 14, 2024 at the Cura Care Centre in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, February 19 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment was held in the parish cemetery.

Catherine Mildred Olmscheid was born October 30, 1929 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to John and Frances (Hemmesch) Olmscheid. She attended country school through the eighth grade. On May 8, 1951 she married Joseph R. Primus at St. Martin Catholic Church. Prior to marriage, Catherine worked at the Melrose Hospital. After marriage, the couple farmed together for 35 years and raised a family of boys. In 1986, they moved to town.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, the Christian Mothers, Catholic United Financial, and Crosier Apostolate.

She enjoyed caring for the grandchildren and feeding them cookies and treats. They especially loved her caramel bars. Catherine loved playing cards with the grandchildren and taught them a valuable lesson, "There are no friends in cards."

She enjoyed gardening, Sunday evening visits, car rides, day trips, parades, and church festivals.

Daily Mass and praying the rosary were important to both her and Joe. Survivors include her loving husband of 72 years, Joseph Primus of Melrose; sons, Rich (Carol) Primus of Albany, Virgil (Mary) Primus of Melrose, and Melvin (Brenda) Primus of Melrose; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Ann Marie Primus of Melrose and Nancy Primus of Sauk Centre; sister, Ann Backes of St. Cloud; sisters-in-law, Betty Moscho of St. Martin and Claire Primus of Long Prairie; and many loving relatives and friends.

Catherine was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Olmscheid; sons, Donald, Baby Boy, Jerry, and Dale Primus; grandsons, Joel Primus and Mitchell Primus; brothers and sisters, Nick (Emma) Olmscheid, Elizabeth (Alfred) Schlangen, Gilbert (Dorothy) Olmscheid, Theresa (Nick) Schaefer, Marie (Gilbert) Schoenberg, and Alverna (Alfred) Enneking; and brother-in-law, Herbert Backes.

Memorials are preferred to Crosier Apostolate, CentraCare Hospice, or St. Mary's School. The family appreciates your support. No thank you cards will be sent.

Lorene "Lori" Zierden

Lorene A. “Lori” Zierden, age 62 of Blackduck, formerly of New Munich, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024 at her home in Blackduck, Minnesota.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, February 24 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Private inurnment will be at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich.

Lori Ann Zierden was born on June 16, 1961 in Melrose, Minnesota to Edmund and Mary Ann (Koenig) Zierden. She attended New Munich Elementary School and graduated from Melrose High School in 1979. She lived on the family farm all her life, 62 years, until moving to Blackduck.

Lori was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich, where she played guitar for over 30 years. She enjoyed baking, Disney, and collecting pins and broaches since she was 18 years old. She also enjoyed spending time with her great nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Ann Zierden of Melrose; sister, Ruth Zierden of Brainerd; nephews Doug (Erin) Zierden of St. Cloud, and Tony (Heather) Zierden of Bemidji; niece, Amy (Josh) Meyer of South Haven; and great nieces and nephews, Riley, Mady, and Carter Zierden, Brionna and Lily Zierden, and Donovon, Arianna, and Courtney Meyer.

Lori was preceded in death by her father, Edmund Zierden; brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Mickey Zierden; grandparents, George and Mary Koenig and Mathias and Mary Zierden; and many aunts and uncles.

Dorothy Irene Johnson

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 22nd at the Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home, Stein Chapel in Long Prairie for Dorothy Johnson, 82, who passed away Monday, February 12, 2024 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral

services on Thursday.

Dorothy Irene Bundy was born December 28, 1941 to David and Helen (Helgeson) Bundy in Reynolds Township. While growing up on a farm she enjoyed driving tactor as well as helping with the cooking and baking. She lived with her grandma Anderson in Alexandria before returning to graduate from Long Prairie High School in 1959. After graduation, for a short time she worked various jobs in the Twin Cities before returning to Long Prairie.

She met Ivan Johnson at the Log Cabin Dance Hall in Round Prairie. This romance developed to their marriage on September 1st, 1961. She worked at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital before she and Ivan moved to work on a farm in North Dakota. Upon their return to Minnesota, she again went to work as a Nurses Aide at the hospital in Long Prairie. In 1983 she began working at Valley View Assisted Living. She really enjoyed her part time work at Custer Floral. She also worked for the Petron and Zinter Potato Farms before retiring in 2006.

She enjoyed camping, fishing, embroidering, crocheting, doing crafts and baking. Finding good deals at garage sales and thrift shops were always a fun challenge for her. More than anything though, Dorothy genuinely loved people. Although each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart, her loving kindness could be felt by all whom she encountered. She truly loved helping people and has touched the lives of patients, clients, coworkers, neighbors and relative strangers.

She is survived by her sons, James (Jennifer) and Randy (Lois) both of Round Prairie; daughters, Denitta (John) Kircher of Round Prairie, Sherri Johnson of Long Prairie and Bobbi Johnson of Browerville;15 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ivan; sons David and Dale; infant sister Lois Bundy; sister Darlen Olberg and grandson, David Johnson The family would like to extend an invitation to a Celebration of Life to be held in Dorothy’s honor beginning at 1:00 PM, Sunday, March 17, 2024 at the American Legion in Long Prairie.

Peter A. Van Beck

Peter A. Van Beck, age 80 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at his home in Greenwald, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, February 26 at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m.

Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Peter Adam Van Beck was born October 5, 1943 in Melrose, Minnesota to Adam and Cecilia (Fuchs) Van Beck. He attended grade school at St. Andrew’s in Greenwald and graduated from Melrose High School. Peter served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in August of 1962. He was united in marriage to Joan Schoenberg on June 19, 1965 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill. The couple farmed south of Greenwald where they lived for 58 years. Peter also worked at John Schoenberg’s dairy farm and then at Bayer Built Wood Works for eleven years.

He was a life-long member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald where he served as an usher, lector, and sexton of the cemetery, and a member the Knights of Columbus. Peter enjoyed hunting, playing softball, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, collecting Native American artifacts, taking trips out to Wyoming and Montana, and playing cards with his wife and friends.

Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Joan Van Beck of Greenwald; children, Marti (Audrey) Van Beck of Padua, Mother Christina Van Beck, S.C.M.C. of Taftville, Connecticut, Greg (Kay) Van Beck of Greenwald, Chad (Brenda) Van Beck of Big Birch Lake, Michael (Amy) Van Beck of New Munich, Cory (Erica) Van Beck of Elrosa, and Nathan (Heather) Van Beck of New London; 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with one on the way; brothers and sister, Norma Kaluza of Circle Pines, Vernon Van Beck of Shoreview, Larry (Rosie) Van Beck of Melrose, and Ralph (Linda) Van Beck of Melrose; and many loving relatives and friends.

Peter was preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Cecelia Van Beck; mother and father-in-law, Victor and Bertha Schoenberg; and brothers-in-law, Roger Spanier, John Schoenberg, Tom Schwieters, and Tom Kaluza.

Public input needed on fisheries management fish?” plans for area lakes “Do you have social concerns about the February is the month to connect with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fisheries offices across Minnesota about 112 lakes in 34 counties that will have their fisheries lake management plans updated in 2024.

“People interested in the health and quality of Minnesota’s fisheries are a critical part of the DNR’s fisheries lake management planning process,” said Jon Hansen, DNR fisheries management consultant. “These plans establish fisheries management goals and objectives for each lake and define the work fisheries biologists do each year. Plans aren’t complete without observations and input from a lake’s stakeholders.”

The list of lakes is on the DNR website.

Fisheries management plans for Minnesota’s 10 largest lakes follow a similar but separate update process.

People who want to discuss management for a lake can call or email the area fisheries office listed for that lake during February. Those observations and comments, obtained during the initial step of the process, will be considered as area fisheries managers begin developing updates for each fisheries management plan.

“We want to hear from anyone interested in these fisheries,” Hansen said. “Comments about experiences, observations, concerns and wishes for the fishery – rather than suggestions on how the DNR might accomplish a specific goal or objective – are the most helpful kinds of input.”

By Barb Dinkel Goodrich, Hands of Hope Resource Center, Todd County February was declared Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month by Congress in 2010.

It is a nationally recognized campaign to raise awareness and education on teen dating violence and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Romantic relationships between teenagers can be complicated. Being in a relationship requires more maturity than most teens have developed, and are more likely to lead to problems with communication, jealousy, and selflessness.

Unhealthy relationships can take many forms, and there are certain behaviors that should be cause for concern and raise red flags: • Extreme jealousy or insecurity • Explosive outbursts, temper, or mood swings • Possessiveness or controlling tendencies • Isolation from friends or family (physically, financially, or emotionally) • Frequently being put down, especially in front of others • Threatening or causing physical violence • Pressuring or forcing unwanted sexual activity • Monitoring their whereabouts, what they are doing and who they are with Talking to teens about the health of their relationships is a proactive way to support them, even if they are not in an abusive relationship. Parents need to feel comfortable talking about these issues. Schools need to take steps to become better prepared to address incidents on campus. And as a community, we need to rise up and say “No More.” It’s never too early to start having these conversations – adolescence

Honestly? This idea isn’t a lot like real estate at all. Real estate will run itself—for the most part—once you find a tenant. Also, the number of hours you’d have to put into selling real estate on the side is nothing like the time you’d spend getting a new business off the ground.

Here’s the deal, Victor. The secret ingredient to your small business success is you. You are the ideas, the passion and the energy. The problem with your plan is that you are only a small part of the equation.

The first time we left it alone while we went inside a restaurant to eat, she decided to eat the Tahoe. She chewed the back of the rear seat and the corner off the plastic trim too. The vehicle is in great shape with 70,000 miles and we want to sell it, but with a large hole in the seat and the damage to the plastic side trim it’s making the sale very difficult. We checked with the dealer, and they are telling us they can repair it at a cost of over $3500.00 parts and labor and our insurance will not cover repairs. Can you suggest anything that we can do in the way of a repair to save some money?

What’s wrong with a seat and trim from another Tahoe of the same year that has no damage?

Look into certified used parts. Ask your dealer if they can find these parts so you can get a repair that makes more financial sense. With the hundreds of reliable used parts sources in the country they should be able to find a match for a late model vehicle like yours and make the repair affordable. There is always a way.

The fluid tank slowly drains so we fill the brake fluid, and it works fine for a while then comes on again. We had a mechanic look at it and told us we would have to replace the HCU in the brake system and that the part alone is about $1600.00. Is this a common problem and does this sound reasonable?

Is there anything else we can do? I'm a little hesitant to spend so much on a repair on a 10-year-old vehicle, when the value is maybe a little more than twice the cost to repair the

The units don’t tend to leak fluid but rather fail electrically so I would take a very close look at the lines going to the unit which are more common to fail. Shop around for brakes. A second opinion never hurts if you have any questions and by asking us, we assume that you do. When you have an older vehicle or any vehicle for that matter it is important to keep repairs economical but it’s also important to be safe. Brakes are not an area to cut corners on but there are always ways to save money when repairing them.

Upsala City • February 5, 2024 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall

by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said.

On roll call members present: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Wendy Rene, Lana Bartells, Alan Gunderson, and Mitch Lange. Staff present: City Clerk-Treasurer Jane Popp.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from January 2, 2024, City Council Meeting, 2nd

by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Gunderson moved to approve minutes from January 8, 2024, Special City Council Meeting, 2nd by Rene. Motion carried unanimously.

Added agenda items: Rene moved to approve the agenda as presented, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Presentations: Heather Johnson from the historical society stated that they will be moving forward with a new building and taking inventory of the items they have. Heather talked about storing the items in the Community Center basement.

Gunderson moved to approve the Historical Society to store items in the Upsala Community Center basement with Historical Society having insurance on their items, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Barry Johnson from Moore is working on city easements.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Chief and deputy chief were absent, and Lange reported the gambling license was received and they will have training at the next meeting.

First Response Team: First Response Team Vice President Haus reported four calls for December. They had five recommendations for the EMS team. Expenses for EMS were discussed.

Rene moved to approve not to pay EMS for a zoom personal account and not for mileage going to Camp Ripley to pick up First Response supply bags donated by The Good Neighbor Program, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

City Office Report: Popp reviewed the February Calendar.

Planning Commission Planning & Zoning commission and council met with Sourcewell on revising and updating Upsala City ordinances and city forms.

Unfinished Business: Heritage Days: The plan will be a lot like last year.

New Business: Liquor License – Buffy’s Bar & Grill: Gunderson moved to approve the liquor license for Buffy’s Bar & Grill, 2nd by Bartells.

Motion carried unanimously.

Liquor License – Upsala Ball Park Association Lange moved to approve the liquor license to Upsala Ball Park Association, 2nd by Rene.

Crash: February 14, 2024: At approximately 3:10 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff's Office Emergency Communications Center received a report of a crash with injuries at the intersection of County Road 11 and 365 Street in Oak Township, south of the city of Freeport.

Upon arrival at the scene, deputies observed a 2004 Ford Taurus with significant front-end damage in the west ditch of County Road 11, which was driven by Gerald Dobmeier, 72, of Freeport. Deputies also observed a 2018 Dodge Caravan on the roadway, also with significant front-end damage. The Caravan was driven by Tatum Holdvogt, 35, of Melrose and occupied by her three juvenile passengers ages 3, 2, and 1. Holdvogt told deputies she had been traveling northbound on County Road 11 towards Freeport when she lost control of her vehicle as it started to slide into the southbound lane. Her vehicle crossed the center line divider and collided head on into the Taurus. Dobmeier was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Tatum and her three juvenile passengers were not injured. The snow and slippery road conditions are believed to be a contributing factor of the crash. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Freeport Fire and Rescue and Melrose Ambulance.

Alexandria Technical and Community College student Chase Overmann, a second-year diesel student from Freeport, Minn., received the Dean Schenk Memorial Scholarship.

The Alexandria Technical and Community College Foundation held the Dean Schenk Memorial Torque Wrench Presentation on February 6, 2024. This annual tool scholarship is awarded to students in their second year of the Diesel Mechanics program.

The Dean Schenk Memorial Scholarship was founded by Karen Schenk. The five students awarded the scholarship this year were Nick Gilk, Richmond, Minn.; O.P. Hendrickson, New York Mills, Minn.; Griffen Jensen, Waconia, Minn.; Chase Overmann, Freeport, Minn.; and Mason Studemann, Atwater, Minn. Each student received a specially engraved torque wrench, valued at over $1,000, to take with them as they begin their careers.
