Embrace mistakes as opportunities to grow

By Harvey Mackay I’ve often said the greatest mistake a person can make is to be afraid to make one.

To be successful, you must come to terms with the notion that you will make mistakes.

In fact, you often need to increase your failures to become more successful. Mistakes don’t make you a failure. I always say, if you want to triple your success ratio, you might have to triple your failure rate.

Mistakes are okay as long as you learn from them and don’t repeat them.

As Confucius said, “A man who has made a mistake and doesn’t correct it is making another mistake.” I say it a little differently: One mistake will never kill you. The same mistake over and over will.

This concept is perfectly illustrated in the story of the fellow who was explaining to his neighbor how he got a burn on his right ear. “I was getting ready to iron my shirts and the phone rang. I picked up the iron by mistake.”

The neighbor replied, “Well, then, how did you burn your left ear?”

“The same guy called back five minutes later.”

Tom Watson Jr. was the CEO of IBM from 1956-71. A senior executive made a large mistake costing the company a bunch of money. When Watson called him into his office, the executive said something like, “I suppose you’re going to fire me.” Watson replied, “Not at all, young man, we have just spent a fortune educating you.”

The great inventor Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” When Edison’s factory burned down with much of his life’s work inside, he said, “There is great value in disaster. All our mistakes are burned up. Thank God we can start anew.”

Both business legends saw mistakes as investments in learning. They recognized the value of real-life lessons. When you mess up, seize the opportunity to get educated! Unfortunately, many people don’t learn from their mistakes because they are consumed with trying to place the blame on someone else.

In today’s business climate, it seems people are making decisions faster than ever. That creates more opportunity for mistakes. Don’t misunderstand, I am not advocating making mistakes on purpose.

But haste, as they say, makes waste.

Wasting time is a mistake in itself. Stop and think before you act - avoid the mistakes that are so obvious that you can predict their occurrence.

Just keep in mind that if you’re not making mistakes, you’re not taking any risks - and that could mean you’re not

making progress.

Here’s advice on turning around your mistakes: • Be honest. Never try to cover up mistakes. The earlier you ‘fess up, the faster you’ll be able to correct the problem while maintaining your credibility.

• Take responsibility. Your bosses and your customers don’t want to hear excuses, and because it’s rare for managers to take that kind of responsibility, it’s a powerful way to show a sense of acHarvey Mackay continued to pg 3

Dean and Jeanne Peterson of Upsala, Minnesota are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter Christy Peterson to Adam Wehlage, son of Jim and Ruth Wehlage of Greenwald, Minnesota.

Christy is a graduate of Upsala High School and St. Cloud State University.

She is employed by Sherburne & Wright Special Education Cooperative as a Special Education teacher in the Monticello Middle School. Adam is a Melrose High School graduate and works for Diamond Energy Systems as a Mechanical Insulator.

Maryann P. Van Heel, age 84 of Golden Valley, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Valentine’s Day 2013 just 16 days following the death of her husband Ernie.

Born in St. Paul, MN; graduated with a Medical Technology degree from the University of Minnesota. She married Ernie in 1952 and they had six

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Monica T. Stodolka, age 78 of Bowlus, was held Wednesday, F e b r u a r y 20th, 2013 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church in Bowlus. Monica passed away Sunday morning, February 17, 2013 at St. Cloud Hospital.

Monica was born October 7th, 1934 in Upsala to Theodore and Theresia (Gappa) Biniek. She married Kenneth Stodolka on August 12th in 1967 at All Saints St. Hedwig’s in Holdingford.

Lorraine L. Schlicht, age 97 of Melrose, died Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

The funeral service was held Saturday, February 16, 2013, at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Deacon Ernie Kociemba officiating. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Lorraine Louise Claseman was born April 11, 1915 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Ben and Louise (Loerke) Claseman. On October 18, 1937 she married Hugo “Max” Schlicht. Lorraine was a lifelong resident of Melrose who spent her life as a homemaker. Being a

homemaker, Lorraine did lots of sewing and embroidery work, and spent a lot of time baking cookies. She enjoyed playing BINGO, cards, watching the Minnesota Twins and loved being a grandmother.

Survivors include her daughter, Lou Middendorf of Melrose; grandchildren, Deb (Keith) Miner of Circle Pines, Terry Middendorf of Rosemount, and Sheila (Robin) Handy of Medina; and greatgrandchildren, Kelly Miner, Samantha Miner, Brooke Middendorf, and Nicole Middendorf.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband, Hugo “Max” Schlicht; parents; brothers, Walter Claseman, Harold Claseman, and Eddie Claseman; and sisters, Alva Rohe, Nellie Zitur, and Doris Johnson.

Serving as casket bearers were her grandchildren.

Area student named to Dean’s List Nicole Berscheid, a senior at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., has been named to the Dean’s List for academic excellence for the fall 2012 semester.

She is the daughter of Tim and Sharon Berscheid from Holdingford.

The Dean’s List honors students who achieve an outstanding scholastic record during a semester with a grade point average of 3.6 or greater.

Frostiana at Centennial Auditorium on March 2nd January 19th, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of famous American poet Robert Frost. Four-time Pulitzer Prize winner for poetry, Frost was famous for his poetic settings of rural life and works about complex social and philosophical themes. Generally regarded as one of the greatest American poets of all time, Robert Frost’s legacy continues to move the minds and hearts of readers still today.

In 1959, the town of Amherst, Massachusetts, commissioned a choral work by well-respected American composer Randall Thompson. In celebration of their bicentennial, the work was to be performed by their men’s and women’s choruses, which rehearsed separately.

Randall Thompson was a good friend of Robert Frost, whom was a fan of Thompson’s work, and therefore the text for the commissioned would be that of Robert Frost’s poetry. Thompson titled the work “Frostiana.” The work is comprised of seven movements; two for each individual chorus and three for mixed chorus.

town’s bicentennial, we do have men’s and women’s choruses that rehearse separately, we definitely have an appreciation of rural life, and we even have some poets among us! In addition, both Staples community choruses have performed several of the movements individually, the entire work has never been performed here, thus giving the choruses an opportunity to bring another new musical experience to the community.

On March 2, 7:30 PM, at Centennial Auditorium in Staples, the Staples Area Women’s and Men’s Choruses will join for an evening of high quality women’s, men’s, and mixed chorus singing, and even a little “extra” technology to boot!

The evening will begin with each chorus performing on their own and then together. Following intermission, the choruses will perform one of Randall Thompson’s most famous choral works, “Frostiana.” In an effort to make the experience unique and more interesting for than a traditional performance, the choruses will use some “basic” technology to enhance the evening. By Bill Abeler Four distinguished Upsala alumni were welcomed as the first inductees into the Upsala Hall of Fame in a ceremony held between girls and boys varsity basketball games on Saturday, February 16.

Nominated by members of the community, candidates needed to be graduates of Upsala High School, be positive role models for future generations, and have been out of school for a minimum of ten years.

Stanley Nordin (Class of 1937) competed in three sports: football, bas-

ketball and track. Stan was an exceptional basketball player and was a leader on an undefeated basketball team that lost to Alexandria in the section finals, just one game short of going to the State Tournament. After graduation, Stan attended the University of Minnesota on an athletic scholarship where he played basketball for one season before transferring to St. Cloud State University. As a Huskie, Stan competed in basketball, football, track and swimming and was inducted into the SCSU Hall of Fame in 1989. Stan passed away June 26, 2012.

David Holmen (Class of 1954) played basketball, football, and baseball from 1951-1954, earning all conference honors in basketball all three years and in football as a senior. Dave’s play as an outstanding end on both offense and defense was recognized his senior year when he earned All-State Honorable Mention honors for football in 1954. Alternating between forward and center in basketball, Dave became Upsala’s first 1000 point scorer. Dave and his wife, Shirley, live three miles west of Upsala on their well-known Cedar-Pine Strawberry Farm. Dave is an outstanding supporter of Upsala High School athletics and can often be seen at many of our contests, especially basketball.

Ralph Soltis (class of 1962) excelled in three sports: football, basketball, and track. As a senior, Ralph earned All Conference honors in all three. After high school Ralph attended the University of North Dakota, where he played football

as a center on offense and a linebacker on defense. As a senior captain at UND, Ralph was named All Conference for his play at center. Ralph came home to the Upsala community after college where he taught science for many years in Upsala and other school districts.

Paula Lange (class of 1980) was a dominant four-sport athlete, competing in volleyball, basketball, track, and boys baseball and earning All Conference honors in all four during her senior year. Bill would eliminate tax glitch for local governments A bill that I authored had its first hearing in the House Tax Committee last week.

The measure would exempt cities and counties from paying the state sales tax on most of their purchases, basically the same exemption given to townships two years ago. The law requiring local units of government to pay the tax was put into effect in the early 1990s when the state was facing a budget shortfall. Given the choice of either losing substantial amounts of local government aid (LGA) or having the tax imposed on themselves, the local units endorsed the tax. At the time of enactment, the tax generated around $60 million in revenue to the state. Today, cities and counties contribute around $140 million in sales taxes to the state.

Most observers seem to agree that taxing local government is not a good thing.

It’s adding a tax onto a tax because local revenues (raised by local taxes) must be sufficient to cover the expense of paying the sales tax to the state. It’s also a cycle whereby the state gives local governments revenue in the form of LGA, but then turns

around and taxes those very same units.

There is an added concern this year about taxing local units if Gov. Mark Dayton’s sales tax expansion becomes law.

Many of our smaller cities and counties contract out for such things as auditing, engineering, and assorted legal services.

Under the governor’s expansion plan, all of these services would be taxable, adding a sizeable additional tax burden onto local governments. I checked with several cities in our district and Melrose, for example, would have an additional tax burden of around $18,000 if those aforementioned services were taxed at the proposed lower rate of 5.5 percent.

I attended an informational gathering with DNR personnel last week where a variety of topics were discussed. The lawsuit against the wolf season in Minnesota is ongoing, but there appears to be no inclination to stop the hunt. Another topic discussed was the controversial “point restriction” in the southeast deer hunting zone that’s been in effect the past three years. The restriction is an effort to produce bigger bucks as none could legally be taken in that area with fewer than four antler points on each side of the rack. The original restriction was for a three-year pe-

riod, so without further authority to extend it, the plan has expired. There are strong feelings on both sides of this argument, and it wasn’t clear how the DNR will proceed on this subject.

Also discussed was a topic that I have brought up for several years pertaining to an earlier goose season in Minnesota. It seems the local Canada goose population, after staying here all spring and summer eating farmers’ crops, takes wing and, for the most part, leaves this area right before the current early season, which starts around Labor Day weekend. It must have to do with moving on to other feeding areas, because it seems to happen every year. I have been told that establishing the timeframe for migratory hunting seasons rests with the federal government, and we couldn’t have an earlier season. Now, however, the feds have given states an option to establish what they call a “conservation action,” which would allow states to have an earlier season. Both North Dakota and South Dakota already do this, so I raised the issue once again. Informational hearings will be held this spring, and there is a good possibility of an earlier season, at least here in west Central Minnesota.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City January 8, 2013 Oath of office was given to newly elected members.

The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 8th day of January, 2013 in council chambers.

Council members present were Dennis Barrett, Thom Muellner, Ralph Muellner and Andrea Kraska.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were guests Mark Larson and Bob Lefavor.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the December 11, 2012 Truth in Taxation meeting as written. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve the minutes of the December 11, 2012 regular meeting as written. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater items were discussed: 1. While monthly meter readings were being done, it was found that the mobile home west of the Old Mill had a water leak and that approximately 220,000 gallons of water had gone through the meter.

The following maintenance items were discussed: 1. Snow piles were removed by the State from the bank parking lot and across from the Junction and Herdering removed the snow pile by the City shop.

Mark Larson met with the council to discuss the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Clubs plans for GEMFest 2013. The dates this year are July 19, 20 and 21. The music line up will be Diamond Back opening with LoCash Cowboys on Friday night and Southbound Main opening with Whiskey Tango on

Saturday night. Shawn Ehlert from Shipwrex is working on a Karaoke contest to coincide with GEMFest.

There is some talk about moving the band back to the football area, and also the possibility of charging for parking and camping. There will be pre-sale for tickets and Leighton Broadcasting will be advertising for the event in cooperation with Jeff Leyk. Activities for the weekend will include softball tournament, volleyball tournament, ATV pull, tractor pull, flea market, garage sales and kids’ activities. It was also discussed that the Lions Club is interested in donating funds to the City to fix the tennis courts. This would include fixing cracks, filling in holes and resurfacing.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to repair the tennis courts for approximately $10,000 to $12,000, to be paid for by the Lions Club and taken care of by the Lions Club. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Bob Lefavor attended the council meeting to discuss what is taking place at the old school. Bob is running a salvage business and the area is used mainly as a dismantling area. He has worked hard to clean up as things are moved out. Bob stated that it would cost approximately $300,000 to tear the building down and upkeep on the building is very expensive. He buys jobs, so he wants to turn them over quickly as he is not in the business of storing or collecting. At times there may seem to be a mess, but he tries to complete his job and clean up the yard. He buys buses and fixes, sells or parts them out. Once they are parted out, the remainder is sent off immediately. Bob stated that he is interested in doing one last event at the old school such as an all class reunion to allow everyone to see the inside one last time. His plans are to tear down the middle section, while the west end and the gym with the lobby would remain. The council wanted Bob to know that they are in support of the work he is doing and would hope

that this discussion may help with some of the complaints that Bob and the council had received.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve a demolition/ building permit for Larry Kerzman to tear down an existing home located at 204 Woodman Street North and moving in a rambler style home to be placed on the lot, conforming to City ordinances and staying within boundary lines and setbacks. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A Motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2013-01, A Resolution Adopting 2013 Appointments. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution is as follows: Resolution No. 2013-01: A Resolution Adopting 2013 Appointments: Because the Mayor and Council members can only act collectively as one unit, Streets, Parks, Utilities, Hall, Health & Welfare, Building Permits, Revolving Loan Fund, Library and Community Builders will be the responsibility of the entire Council. The other official designations are as follows: Building Permit Administrator: City Clerk; Acting Mayor: Thom Muellner; Official Depositories: First State Bank of Swanville, Grey Eagle office, Central Minnesota Credit Union, Grey Eagle office; Official Auditor: Baily & Bacon; Official City Attorney, Civil: Peters & Churchwell; Official City Attorney, Criminal: Todd County Attorney.

The Council discussed the old City Hall roof. Andy is to revisit with Buttweiler’s Do-All and Herzog Roofing to obtain new estimates to be approved at the February meeting so that the company chosen can schedule the project as soon as possible in the spring. Duane Becker is heading up a project to make some repairs to doors and windows,

as well as repairing the pillars and sidewalk and also repairing the plaster in the entry way.

The Council discussed the need to purchase 400-500 pins to mark the new graves at the cemetery.

Eagle Fabricating verbally quoted a price of $3.50 per pin. Dennis found comparable pins on the internet for $1.57 per pin but would also need to buy a pipe to attach to the pin for $1.25 each. A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to purchase 400 pins from Eagle Fabricating provided that the City obtains a written agreement stating the price of $3.50 per pin, due by March 1, 2013. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Council tabled a decision on the purchase of the UBMax utility bill program.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to authorize the Clerk to purchase investment CD’s in the amounts as follows: $23,320 for Fire Department equipment, $26,708.59 for Park Projects, $4,455 for Park Projects, $5,500 for Park Projects and $3,000 for Street Repairs. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve an ongoing contract with the Todd County Sheriff’s Department with no changes from previous years. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2013-02, A Resolution Accepting $3,000 from the Big Swan Lake Improvement Association for Fire Department Equipment. Lori Hellmann, Clerk Burnhamville Township January 29, 2013 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held January 29, 2013 at the Burtrum Community Center.

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson, and Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky. Absent: Treasurer Pam Throener. Others present: Nikki Kupser and Greg Palmer of Greater Minnesota Gas, Lee and Jake Buchholz, Erv Herdering, and Jerry Rahn.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the regular meeting December 18, 2012. Motion seconded by Sup. Thompson.

Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4745 through 4755: Rev. $916.01, R&B $8,955.75. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Lee Buchholz advised the board that they are starting a new road maintenance company and gave the board contact information when the time comes for road contract bids.

Representatives from Greater Minnesota Gas informed the board that they are in the process of getting state approval to instal underground gas service in some areas of the township. They described their ser-

vice and asked if the township board had any concerns. After discussion, the board responded that they thought it would be a good service to residents when available.

Correspondence included a response to tax increases, supply order forms and inspection report. The ag classification change that raised taxes should have averaged out and the overall taxes should be about the same. The county inspected the Long Lake Shoreland improvement and found a good job was completed. Also received a notice from the state that the Swanville land annexation is official.

A resident requested the township fix the culvert near the intersection of 341st Ave and 160th St. that floods the ditch by his property. The board will inspect it when spring comes.

Swanville and Sobieski Lions requested a liquor license for their annual fishing tournament on Long Lake for February 23, 2013. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to accept the request. The motion was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Sup. Johnson abstained. Motion passed and will go to county.

Residents of Forrest Lane requested their road be plowed. It is not a township road and board member will give residents information on required road sizing to bring it up to standards.

With the township election and annual meeting on March 12, 2013 Sup. Johnson made a motion to appoint Shirley Hulinsky, Dorothy Strassburg, Terri Homgren as judges with Gloria Hobbs and Bonnie Alsleben as alternates. The absentee ballot board will be Shirley Hulinsky and Dorothy Strassburg. Motion was seconded by Sup Thompson.

Motion passed.

In the road report the board thanked the contractor for sanding roads after the ice storm. Contractor will continue to sand depending on the weather.

The township reviewed and signed the property tax exempt forms from the county.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $198,786.98 before tonight’s bills. Treasurer’s report accepted on a motion by Sup. Johnson and seconded by Sup. Berscheit.

Motion passed.

Paula made the NAIA All Tournament softball team in 1982 and was nominated for All American honors in 1983. Paula later returned to Upsala and coached the girl’s basketball team for a couple of seasons. Today Paula lives in St. Cloud and works at St. Bens.

February 17, 2013: At 7:48 p.m. the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a one vehicle accident roll over that occurred on County Road 12 by Flicker Road in Bruce TWP, Section 33. Nicole Bartkowicz, rural Swanville, was traveling eastbound in her Chevrolet car on County 12 when she swerved to miss a deer. This caused the car to leave the roadway and roll over down a steep ditch. Nicole received very minor injuries in the incident and the car received moderate damage in multiple areas.

$5.00 entry fee per contestant. $2.00 Raffle - $3.00 Fishing.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.

All winners are responsible for their own taxes.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to a contestants disqualification and cancellation of participation in this contest.

Site of contest will be on Long Lake. Hours will be from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Live bait will be available on the ice.

Restroom facilities will be available on the lake.

Participants must act and behave in an orderly manner and be responsible for their actions. No debris is to be left in your fishing area after the contest!
