Listen up if you want to be successful -By Harvey Mackay Two friends were walking down a busy street one evening when one paused and said, “Listen to those crickets chirping.” “ W h a t crickets?” said the other man.

“I don’t hear any crickets.

Hey, you!” He waved down a woman passing by. “Do you hear crickets around here?”

“No,” the woman said, and went on her way.

The first man closed his eyes for a moment, then walked to a mailbox on a nearby lawn, reached down, and picked a cricket up from the grass.

“That’s amazing!” said his friend.

“How did you hear that?”

“Watch,” the first man said.

He dug into his pocket for a handful of change and tossed some coins onto the sidewalk. Immediately the door of

the house opened, a car stopped, and two passersby stopped to look for the coins.

The first man shrugged. “It all depends on what you’re listening for.”

We were born with two ears but only one mouth. Some people say that’s because we should spend twice as much time listening as talking. Others claim it’s because listening is twice as difficult as talking.

Whatever the reason, developing good listening skills is critical to success. There is a difference between hearing and listening. Pay attention!

Your next job/account/paycheck may depend on it.

These statistics, from the International Listening Association website, really drive home the importance of listening. At the same time, they demonstrate how difficult listening can be: • 85 percent of our learning is derived from listening.

• Listeners are distracted, forgetful and preoccupied 75 percent of the time.

• Most listeners only recall 50

percent of what they have heard immediately after hearing someone say it.

• People spend 45 percent of their waking time listening.

• Most people only remember about 20 percent of what they hear over time.

• People listen at about 125 to 250 words per minute but think at about 1,000 to 3,000 words per minute.

• There have been at least 35 business studies indicating listening as a top skill needed for success.

Obituaries Ervin H. “Erv” Schiffler Ervin H. “Erv” Schiffler, age 76 of St. A n t h o n y , died after complications from a stroke on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose,

area. He then helped his parents operate Schiffler’s Liquor while he purchased the New Munich Ballroom and Dino’s Ballroom and remained in the liquor industry.

Erv truly loved his ten grandchildren. He especially enjoyed taking them on four wheeling and fishing trips. He also enjoyed shooting pool with his friends and loved to see everyone enjoying life when they came to visit him at Schiffler’s Liquor.

Survivors include his children, Dean (Carla) Schiffler of Lakeville and Stacy (Barry) Meyer of Melrose; daughter-inlaw, Shanna Schiffler of Waconia; ten grandchildren, Matt, Tyler, and Kaley Schiffler, Colton, Drake, and Mia Meyer, and Gabi, Nate, Isaac, and Eli Schiffler; brothers and sister, Richard “Bottle” Schiffler of Albany, Robert Schiffler of Albany, Glenn Schiffler of Plymouth, and Gerianne Klug of Rice.

Erv was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Schiffler; parents; son, Wes Schiffler; brothers and sisters, Virgil Schiffler, Rita Baltes, Wilfred “Sonny” Schiffler Jr., Del Schiffler, Shirley Schiffler, Gary Schiffler, and Lucille Kollodge.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

The family is honoring the wishes of their father who has chosen cremation without visitation but would really love to have family and friends gather with them to celebrate the life he has led.

Please join them on Sunday, February 22nd from 1 to 5 p.m. at Schiffler’s Liquor in St. Anthony, Minnesota to pay your respects. They will have a private family burial at a later date.

Ervin Henry Schiffler was born March 25, 1938 in Albany, Minnesota to Wilfred and Anna (Silbernick) Schiffler.

He graduated from Albany High School in 1956. He was united in marriage to Darlene Bergmann on July 6, 1963 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Erv hauled milk for local dairy farmers in the Stearns County

David M. “Dave” Bergmann, age 91 of Melrose, died peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

David Michael Bergmann was born December 3, 1923 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to John and Hilda (Bruns) Bergmann. Dave graduated from Melrose High School in 1940 and upon graduation hitch-hiked with two buddies to North Dakota where they worked picking potatoes. At the completion of potato season he headed south to Iowa where he picked corn (in knee-high snow). He joined the CCC camps and worked for the forestry department planting trees and taking the deer census. The adventure continued to Oregon where he lived with his uncle and worked as a welder in the shipyards.

He had an opportunity to go to radio school and later became the chief radio operator of the largest hospital ship that the U.S. had. He continued to work on ships until 1952 when he moved to Oakland, California. There he was employed by the General Motors Corporation. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and Korea. He was united in marriage to Ona “Blanche” Collins on March 23, 1972 in Reno, Nevada.

In 1971, Minnesota called Dave home and he, with his brother Loren,

purchased the Avon Ballroom and Midwest Automatic Parts. The ballroom was sold in 1975 to Erv Schiffler but he continued to run Midwest Automatic Parts until his retirement.

Dave’s special interests and love for travel led him on many trips throughout the world, but the ones that were most dear to him were those to Germany. He made many trips to Germany looking for and visiting with relatives. Other interests included golf, cards, especially cribbage with his friends, world and local news, telling stories of years past, visiting with family and friends, spending time at the “Ranch”, and caring for his furry friends.

For those that did not know Dave personally, you may have known his van. The crazy orange van that you could often find parked on main street in Melrose throughout the years.

Survivors include his very special friend, Lois Schanhaar of Melrose; brothers and sisters, Duane Bergmann of Grand Rapids, LaVerne (Ed) Duclos of Big Birch Lake, Joan Haws (Bill McDermond) of Little Birch Lake, Ken (Marilyn) Bergmann of Big Birch Lake, Audrey Westbrook of Savage, and Jan Gibbons of St. Anna; sister-in-law, Sally Bergmann of Albany; brother-in-law, Don Lambrecht of Big Birch Lake; and many nieces and nephews.

Dave was preceded in death by his wife, Ona “Blanche” Bergmann on August 25, 1994; parents; brothers and sisters, Irene Lee, Norma Bergmann, Melvin Bergmann, Eugene Bergmann, Loren Bergmann, Ellen Lambrecht, and Darlene Schiffler.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Alfred Erhard Koester A l f r e d Erhard Koester, 85-year-old resident of Swanville, passed away February 13th, 2015 at his home in Swanville.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M. on We d n e s d a y, F e b r u a r y 18th at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Pastor Kevin Zellers officiating. Burial was in the St. Peter’s Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.

Alfred “Tooter” Erhard Koester was born on August 25th, 1929 at his family’s home farm place to Alfred and Irene (Rahn) Koester in Swanville Township in Morrison County. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran in Swanville. He received his education at Swanville Public School.

He was married to Rosella Martha Bliese on June 16th, 1950 at St. Peter’s Lutheran church in Swanville. He spent his whole life farming the family farm.

He also spent 7 years between 19651972 working at Larson’s Boat Works.

Alfred and Rosella were blessed with 11

children, 24 grandchildren, and 9 greatgrandchildren. He loved his family dearly.

He is survived by his sons: Vernon Koester of Swanville, Merlin (Bernice) Koester of Upsala, Wayne (Jean) Koester of Golden Valley, Lynn (Kathy) Koester of Alexandria, Randy (Carmen) Koester of Sartell, Brian (Kathy) Koester of Little Falls, Steven (Katie) Koester of Sartell; by his daughters Gail (Tom) Meyer of Royalton, Peggy (Richard) Farmer of Litchfield, and Julie (Mike) Larson of Osseo; brother Earl Koester of Swanville and sister Devonna (Don) Peterson of Baxter; brother-in-laws Gene (Peggy) Bliese of Swanville, Arthur (Shirley) Bliese of Swanville, Edwin (Ruth) Zastrow of Sauk Centre; sister-in-laws, Jeanette Schneider of Albany and Ethel Bliese of Blaine; 23 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rosella, daughter Doreen Koester, grandson Joshua Koester, brother Homer Koester, sister Bernice Zastrow, sisterin-law Martha Koester, and brother-inlaw George Bliese.

Pallbearers were Nicholas Koester, Kevin Koester, Mark Koester, Stephen Roerick, Davis Mickelson, Paul Kremers and Darryl Peterson.

Volunteer safety training instructors honored

Two Minnesota hunter education instructors are being honored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for 50 years of volunteer service to the program.

Galen D. Allen of Burtrum, and Palmer K. Durdahl of Howard Lake began teaching hunter firearms safety training in the mid-1960s. The Minnesota hunter education program was established in 1955. Since that time, more than a million Minnesotans have completed firearms safety training.

“Volunteer instructors are the heart and soul of the youth safety training programs in Minnesota,” says Acting Capt. Jon Paurus, DNR education program coordinator. “The service of these dedicated men and women has made a significant difference in ensuring that those who hunt and recreate in Minnesota are safe, responsible and ethical. Allen, Anderson, and Durdahl were joined by more than 500 other safety instructors honored by the DNR for 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 years of service to the agency.

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 In addition, there are a number of behaviors to avoid if you want to be a really good listener: interrupting, avoiding eye contact, rushing the speaker and letting your attention wander. Don’t rush ahead and finish the speaker’s thoughts, because you might take them in the wrong direction.

Arguing, as with a “yes, but” response, indicates that you were more interested in getting your own point across than listening to theirs. Trying to top the speaker’s story doesn’t win you any points either.

Listening can be hard work, and some people are more challenging to listen to than others, but when you find yourself tuning out what someone is saying you should ask yourself why.

If you want people to listen to what you’re saying, make sure they feel like you have listened to them. When we feel we are being listened to, it makes us feel like we are being taken seriously and what we say really matters.

In his book, “The 8th Habit,” management guru Stephen Covey tells a true story about the importance of asking other people their opinions.

Covey says W. “Bill” Marriott, chairman and CEO of Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel chain, described to him “the biggest lesson I have learned through the years.”

“It is,” said Marriott, “to listen to your people. I find that if you have senior managers who really gather their people around them, get their ideas and listen to their input, you make a lot better decisions.”

Marriott said he learned this lesson from an encounter with President Dwight Eisenhower when Marriott was a young Ensign in the Navy.

“I had been in the navy for six months and had come home from the Supply Corps School for Christmas.

U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson came down to our farm with President Eisenhower.”

Marriott said it was extremely cold outside but that his father had put up targets outside for shooting. He asked the President if he wanted to go outside and shoot or stay by the fire.

“He just turned to me,” said Marriott, “and said, ‘What do you think, Ensign?”

Marriott said he told the President it was too cold outside for shooting and to stay inside by the fire, which he did.

Marriott said that lesson, asking and listening to someone else’s opinion, has stayed with him and has been a big asset in his business.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m 30 and debt-free. Do you think I should stop making contributions to my 401(k) account for a year in order to save up an emergency fund?

-Beth Dear Beth, Yes, I do.

But it shouldn’t take you a year to set aside an emergency fund if you’re debt-free and making decent money at your job. Just make it part of your monthly budget plan, grit your teeth and do it! I recommend that people put off or stop investing until they are debt-free, except for their home, and have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in place.

In some cases, depending on how much debt they have, it could take three or four years to do all this. I know it seems like a long time, but it’s really not in the grand scheme of things.

Here’s the way I look at it. If you have no emergency fund, but you’re contributing to your 401(k), there’s a good chance you’ll end up cashing out your 401(k) if a large, unexpected expense comes along. When you cash out a 401(k) early, you get hit with a penalty plus your tax rate. That’s not a good plan!

That’s just one of the reasons I tell people to have an emergency fund in place before they start investing!

-Dave Dear Dave, I have a question about home warranties. Are they a waste of money if you already have a fully-funded

emergency fund, with six months of expenses or more set aside?

-Andy Dear Andy, In my opinion, they’re a waste of money even if you don’t have that much set aside for emergencies. I recommend an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses to cover the unexpected things that life will throw at you. This amount of cash, sitting in a good money market account with check writing privileges, will give you easy access in the event of a financial emergency.

I don’t do extended warranties of any kind, Andy. They’re not a good deal.

You’re better off to self-insure against things breaking down, and put what would have been profit and marketing dollars for the extended warranty company in your own pocket!

Buffer-strip proposal comes with many questions Gov. Dayton’s staff and commissioners are busy explaining the mandatory 50-foot buffer strip proposal that the governor spoke about at the recent DNR Roundtable. The announcement seemed to catch most observers off-guard as it hadn’t been discussed previously. Sold first as a habitat-enhancing program that would be enforced by the DNR, the emphasis quickly shifted to a water-quality program to be enforced locally.

I had staff from the Department of Agriculture and the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BOWSR) in my office last week to more fully explain the program and to get feedback. My concerns about the proposal are many; including the mandatory taking of productive farm land, the one-size-fits-all buffer requirement, questionable habitat improvement, and enforcement. Let’s take these items one at a time.

First, how is this land going to be converted into buffer strips? We cer-

tainly can’t take the number of acres this program would entail without compensation to the landowner. I’ve heard as high as 130,000 acres that would be put into this program. To bring that down to a more understandable number, if both sides of a drainage ditch along the halfmile length of an 80-acre parcel of land had 50 foot buffer strips, approximately six acres would be utilized. Would the farmer be allowed to plant a cover crop such as alfalfa and harvest it, or would there be haying restrictions? Would the state actually purchase this land, or would it mandate some kind of easement?

Most would agree that buffer strips in some areas would certainly slow erosion and the loss of top soil and nutrients. Current law says that when a ditch system undergoes a re-determination process and benefits are allocated to all who utilize the ditch, a one-rod or 16.5 foot buffer strip must be installed. So is that the correct width of a buffer strip, or is 50 feet the “new norm?”

Narrow strips of grass or some kind of cover crop are not the best way to give wildlife such as pheasants more “room.”

These strips would become easy hunting areas for critters such as raccoons or skunks as they would concentrate on these areas. And simply increasing the acres of grassland doesn’t do much to provide food for wildlife.

I have received many comments from constituents who are not in favor of the state or DNR enforcing such a buffer

requirement. It would be best left to local control, but therein lies a concern. Some counties are doing a more brisk job of enforcing the current requirements as they relate to buffer strips. Grant County is mentioned as one of those, with Ottertail just starting to ramp up its enforcement program. It was estimated by BOWSR chief John Jaschke that if all the ditch systems that have undergone re-determination had 100 percent compliance with current buffer statutes, it would only affect about 35 percent of the total number of drainage systems.

As one can see, there are many unanswered questions about this new proposal. At the very least, it should go before the Drainage Working Group for further study and not be rushed through the Legislature during this session.

However, it seems to be a priority of the administration, or at least it was before the fireworks late last week concerning the huge pay increases granted by Gov. Dayton.

“Life is Good” are the words beneath a happy face on a T-shirt. The moon-shaped circle with two slashes and a curvy mouth always seem to remind us of the importance of having fun and locking up moments of pleasure. We want to believe that “Life is Good!”

But is it? And when it isn’t, what are we to do?

Imagine a day that begins with a beautiful sunrise and soon after breakfast dark clouds filled with dreadful news bring some of life’s realities into sharp focus. Imagine a conversation with God that goes something like this: “You know, God, I do trust You and believe that You are concerned about me but that phone call informed me that I lost my job.” Or “My daughter has just confessed to being addicted to crack cocaine.” Or “My son got his girlfriend pregnant and they are juniors in high school.” Or “God my spouse left me for someone else!” Life happens. It did to David. It does to us.

God was his “rock,” his “strong fortress” and his “refuge.” Suddenly, life changed. He was “afflicted,” in “anguish” and about to be “ensnared by a trap that was set” for him by his friends.

His “eyes and bones were weak,” he was a “dread to his friends” and his “name was being slandered.” Where’s your God, David?

Give up? No. He challenged the goodness of God and reminded Him that “I trust in You, O Lord. You are my God. Deliver me!” And God did. David challenges us to “Love the Lord because the Lord preserves the faithful. Be strong, take heart, and hope in the Lord!”

Officers Find Too Many Cases of Ice Anglers Leaving Trash Behind

Recent weekly activity reports from conservation officers (COs) with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are full of evidence of various types of refuse being discarded along frozen waterways.

“Once again, the most common complaint dealt with while on patrol involved anglers leaving their trash behind,” said CO Bret Grundmeier of Hinckley.

Grundmeier spends hours each ice fishing season checking anglers and encouraging them to clean up after themselves and remove garbage from lakes.

“It is disappointing to find so much trash

left on our lakes,” Grundmeier said.

“Anglers are urged to police themselves and others.”

Minnesota’s fish house removal deadlines are March 2 in the southern part of the state and March 16 in the north.

Conservation officers make a concerted effort this time of the year to monitor and identify possible problem areas.

“I’ve already warned a couple of fish house owners about the litter accumulating outside of their house, which they agreed to clean up,” said Paul Kuske, a conservation officer based in Pierz.

Why Teamwork Matters in Marriage

If you and your spouse don’t see eye to eye regarding money, you are just inviting tension and stress and disagreement into your marriage.

For example, if one spouse is sitting down every month and coming up with a budget, and, without notice, the other spouse goes out and spends $500 on a new television, then you have problems.

And that’s a realistic scenario.

Around 1 in 5 Americans admit to spending $500 or more without their partner’s knowledge. We call it “financial infidelity,” and it’s a growing problem today.

When you both sit down at the table and come up with a budget that you both agree on, then issues like that won’t happen. Each month, before the month begins, you sit down and spend every dol-

lar on paper, on purpose.

It’s okay if one of you takes the lead, but you both have to buy in to the budget and understand what’s going on. You both need to have a grasp of your whole financial situation.

That’s why it’s vital to have one primary bank account that you both use.

When you have separate accounts, it’s too easy to start thinking, This is my money and that is his money — when, really, it’s your money together.

Once you have that single account, you can set a limit on a single purchase that you both make without talking. For instance, if your limit is $100, then neither of you would purchase anything over $100 without talking to your spouse first.

That specific number will depend on your income. It might be more, and it might be less. But it’s important that you both know what’s coming in and going out of your bank account. Women new to archery or bow hunting can learn basics in DNR class Women interested in becoming archers or learning how to bow hunt can sign up for a three-part class series on archery basics, equipment, target shooting and hunting skills in a class series starting Saturday, Feb. 28.

“Women can learn the basics of archery, and those with intermediate archery skills can learn how to bow hunt,” said Linda Bylander, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) outreach program coordinator. “They will learn-bydoing in a supportive atmosphere.”

There are two options for these classes. In a beginner’s series, women new to archery or with limited experience will learn archery basics, equipment and target shooting. And a hunting archery series is designed for women with intermediate archery skills who are interested learning how to bow hunt.

Both classes start Feb. 28 in the Schwan Center at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Subsequent classes will

be Sunday, March 15, and Saturday, April 18. A bow hunter education certification class is Saturday, March 21.

Safari Club International North Country Bowhunters Chapter and the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program are teaming up to offer the archery series. Women enrolled in the beginners or hunting series are given priority for the mentored archery spring turkey hunt and mentored fall archery deer hunt.

“I always tell people the area outside their fish house is not their front yard, it is public waters,” he said.

Conservation officers see everything from wooden fish house blocking materials on lakes to empty propane cylinders, plastic bottles, pop cans, and even bags of human waste. All of these materials constitute litter. Littering is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $1,000.

Used materials should be disposed of with local refuse haulers or at a local landfill. Litter tarnishes nature’s beauty, destroys wildlife habitats and ruins many opportunities for recreation.

Conservation officers also use technology to catch litterbugs, including digital pictures and GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates.

Excuses like, “I was going to go get that later,” will not work and anyone who leaves garbage on the ice will receive a citation for littering.

Conservation officers also have solid waste civil citation authority. These

civil citations are “by the pound” or “by the cubic foot” penalties, and since they are not criminal charges, they don’t require proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

The person suspected of littering must pay the penalty and clean up the mess.

The DNR offers the following tips to keep Minnesota waterways clean: • Set an example for others, especially children, by not littering.

• Properly dispose of any materials that could trap or injure wildlife.

• Check with a local refuse provider or landfill for disposal of items.

• Keep a litter bag or trash container with you when traveling or outdoors.

• Secure trash container covers to prevent wind or animals from spreading litter.

• Cover and secure any vehicle, truck, or trailer carrying refuse.

• When visiting any recreation area, make sure to leave the area clean for the next person to enjoy.

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen Attends New Sheriff Orientation

Morrison County Sheriff Shawn Larsen joined 23 other newly elected Sheriffs for a week-long orientation and training last week in Carver County. The Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association (MSA) provides this training every four years to orient and acclimate the new Sheriffs to the Office of Sheriff.

In pursuit of its mission to legislate and educate for the Office of Sheriff, the MSA provides over 100 trainings throughout the state every year on topics unique to a Sheriff’s Office. These include jail training, court security, civil process, and dispatching. The MSA works to provide high-quality and lowcost training to its Sheriffs.

The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held January 27, 2015 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. February 11, 2015: At 0843 hours, TCSO took a call of some suspicious activity that occurred in Burnhamville Township by Big Swan Lake. It was a reported that a vehicle had been pulling into unoccupied residences in the area.

Catalytic Converter Thefts in Stearns County In recent weeks there have been several reports of catalytic converters stolen from vehicles parked at dealership lots.

Some of the catalytic converters have been recovered and a suspect has been identified.

School Board Recognition Week set for February 16-20 The Minnesota School Boards Association has set Feb. 16-20 as School Board Recognition Week in Minnesota as a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our society. Long PrairieGrey Eagle School District is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Week to honor local board members for their commitment to the communities of Long Prairie and Grey Eagle and their children.

“It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn at a higher level,” Superintendent Jon Kringen said. “They make the tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations in order to provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.”

RULES & REGULATIONS

$5.00 entry fee per contestant. $2.00 Raffle - $3.00 Fishing.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.

All winners are responsible for their own taxes.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to a contestants disqualification and cancellation of participation in this contest.

Site of contest will be on Long Lake. Hours will be from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Live bait will be available on the ice.

Always be weary of ice conditions. We are not liable for any injury or loss of life or property.

Any alcoholic beverages won have to be claimed by persons of legal age.

Restroom facilities will be available on the lake.

Participants must act and behave in an orderly manner and be responsible for their actions. No debris is to be left in your fishing area after the contest!
