Friends enrich our lives -By Harvey Mackay Someone once asked a great philosopher what he would rather have – a gift of money or a gift of friendship.

“Friendship,” replied the philosopher, “because money is spent but friendship can last forever.”

Maybe this is why our greatest wealth is not measured in terms of riches but our relationships. Friendship is the cement that holds the world together.

I’ve always felt that friends are like pillars on your house. Sometimes they hold you up, and sometimes they lean on you.

Sometimes it’s just enough to know they’re standing by.

Friendship is so important we celebrate it several times during the year. February is International Friendship Month, and Old Friends, New Friends Week is the third week of May. The first Sunday of August was declared as a U.S. holiday in honor of friends by a Proclamation made by Congress in 1935.

Since then, World Friendship Day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in August.

As novelist George Eliot describes it: “Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words.”

Wikipedia defines friendship as “a mutual affection between people . . .

some of which may vary from place to place, certain characteristics are present in many types of such bonds (including) affection, kindness, love, virtue, sympathy, empathy, honesty, altruism, loyalty, generosity, forgiveness, mutual understanding and compassion, enjoyment of each other’s company, trust, and the ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings to others, and make mistakes without fear of judgment from the friend. Friendship is an essential aspect of relationship building skills.”

That’s a fancy definition for what we all know is central to our happiness. I can’t imagine a life without friends.

I cherish the friends I’ve known since childhood. Along the way I’ve met friends through business, travel, sports and community. They enrich my life and, perhaps just as important, know they can count on me to be there for them.

One of the best books I’ve ever read and learned valuable lessons from is Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Carnegie said: “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

To drive home the point, Carnegie tells how dogs have learned the fine art of making friends. When you get within 10 feet of a friendly dog, it will begin to wag its tail.

If you take the time to pet the dog, it will become excited and lick and jump all over you to show how much it appreciates you.

The dog became man’s best friend by being genuinely interested in people.

Last September we lost an NFL legend in Chicago Bears running back Gayle Sayers.

I’m old enough to have followed his short, but brilliant career. Yet what I remember most

about Sayers is the memorable friendship he had with a running back teammate named Brian Piccolo, memorialized in the movie “Brian’s Song.” Sayers was black, and Piccolo was white. They were roommates when the team travelled, which was a first for race relations in professional football.

The two became very close friends and challenged each other. When Sayers hurt his knee, Piccolo helped his friend through a grueling rehabilitation. During the 1969 season, Piccolo was diagnosed with cancer and was in the hospital more than on the playing field. Sayers was often at his bedside.

After that season Sayers was awarded the prestigious George S. Halas award as “the most courageous player in professional football.” Sayers, Piccolo and their wives had made plans to go together to the annual Professional Football Writers’ Banquet in New York, but Piccolo was too sick to attend.

At the banquet Sayers struggled to speak and said: “You flatter me by giving me this award, but I tell you here and now that I accept this award not for me, but for Brian Piccolo. However, Brian cannot be here tonight. He is too ill. But Brian is a man who has more courage than any of us here tonight. I love Brian Piccolo, and I’d like you to love him too. When you hit your knees tonight, please ask God to love him too.”

several times per year. She was told that the sausage was very important to the families survival, since it was their only source of meat. There was no employment, since the factories had all shut down.

Coop’s were created to help create telephone companies, grain elevators and creameries. These businesses were created to offer ownership in the organization based on the amount of business done through the coop. It did make the owners feel that they were part of a community based business that they owned.

Since there was a lack of money, many financial obligations were solved by farmers giving some of their farm products instead of money. A service was sometimes paid with cattle and hogs. A story was told of a drug store owner coming home to find a newly freshened cow tied to a tree in his yard. A doctor would find half a dozen chickens or a slaughtered hog on his porch.

A local Doctor made winter house calls with a horse and cutter. Sometimes when a child was being born, the time spent at the patient’s home may be longer than expected.

With a childbirth visit, the doctor also brought along a midwife. When returning home from a call at night they would wrap themselves in buffalo robes and sleep while the horse brought them back to town, since he knew where town was, no matter which direction or how far it was to town.

Upon arrival the horse would neigh until they woke up. I’m sure that he was given a special treat, which helped him remember where to go.

It’s now 2021 and most of us have been able to survive the health crises of 2020. When we compare the problems and solutions during the great depression, we see that those living through those years really had it more difficult.

We found a shortage of toilet paper, but even those of us who did not experience the depression know that life can continue without that pretty white roll.

That experience probably was a result of the great depression. If there was no toilet paper during the depression years, it was probably a result of not having money to buy it.

One out of four workers were unemployed. Farm products were valued so low that the cost of shipping to market was more than the product was worth. One of my readers gave me a story written by a depression survivor. It told of his mother making two loves of bread and went to give one of them to a family she thought would appreciate it. When she came to the place for the gift, she had to knock 3 times before the lady of the house came to the door.

When the door was opened, the lady began crying because she had been in the bedroom praying for food, since she had no food and the 6 kids were coming home from school that afternoon and she had nothing to feed them. His mother then went to the grocery store and the locker plant and bought some food for that family. That family never forgot that gift of food.

The application period is open until May 31 and you can visit www.mn.gov/ commerce/eap.jsp to determine eligibility or to learn more about the EAP.

By Rep. Paul Anderson With the bitter-cold temperatures, Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck, is reminding residents that heating assistance is available to those who are struggling to pay their bills.

“We have been experiencing our harshest temperatures of the winter and can expect higher utilities to follow,” Anderson said. “This added cost may put many people who already were struggling to pay their bills in an even tougher spot.

I urge those who may need help to check out what assistance may be available to them to manage heating costs. This could be especially beneficial to those who have been out of work or are clocking fewer hours amid restrictions our state has been under in recent months.”

The state’s Low Income Energy Assistance Program, Anderson said, serves both renters and homeowners, providing financial assistance to pay past due energy bills to avoid disconnection, to purchase emergency full, or to repair or replace a homeowner’s malfunctioning furnace.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Crash: February 10, 2021: At at 11:02 p.m., received a call reporting a single vehicle crash, with injuries, at County Road 72 and 435th Ave. in Sauk Centre Township. This is approximately 2 miles west of the City of Sauk Centre.

Sauk Centre police officers first responded and found a vehicle in the south ditch of County Road 72. Stearns County deputies arrived on scene and found the driver, identified as Douglas Grant Zimmel, 25, of Sauk Centre, already being treated by the Sauk Centre Fire Department and Sauk Centre Ambulance.

The investigation determined that Zimmel was driving his 2015 Chevrolet Silverado east on Co. Rd. 72 near 435th Ave. when he veered off the roadway and entered the ditch. The vehicle went through a barbed wire fence before coming to a stop. A wooden fence post pierced the fire wall of the truck and struck the driver’s seat. The airbags in the vehicle did not deploy and deputies were unable to determine if Zimmel was wearing a seatbelt. Zimmel was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to the St. Cloud Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol and cell phone use are believed to have be en factors and the crash remains under investigation.

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the January Junior High Student of the Month, ninth grade student Karley Loven. Karley is the daughter of John and Tanya Loven. She enjoys playing sports, being with friends and family and reading. She plans to go to college for psychology and to play basketball. Karley has participated in volleyball, basketball, and softball since 6th grade. She has been on student council since 7th grade.

She also plays in band. Karley’s favorite thing about school is seeing friends every day and learning life lessons. Her advice to other students is “Find the good in everyday and always have a hard-working mentality.”

Outside of school Karley cleans the highway with her grandma for church and she also participates in number of camps and is active in her youth group. Karley was the music and social studies student of the year in seventh grade and has won many free-throw awards contests from the Knights of Columbus.

Mathematics Teacher Liza Hasse says, “Karley is very deserving of being chosen as Student of the Month. In class, she works diligently to always do her best and to learn from her mistakes. She is well organized and always has her assignment done in a timely manner. She maintains a positive attitude even when she is challenged in class. Swanville City • January 5, 2021 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, John Dragseth, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej. Also present: Angie VanRissegham, Clif Allen via zoom and reporter Tyler Ohman.

John Dragseth recited the Oath of Office and was welcomed to the City Council.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Wednesday, December 8, 2020 was reviewed. A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by John Dragseth to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, city engineer, present via zoom, presented to council the preliminary task order no. 2, which states the City of Swanville agrees to let Moore Engineering prepare and submit final application for Small Cities Development Grant (DEED). The city will receive a monthly statement of expenses from Moore Engineering. Payment is not expected until funding is received. John Dragseth made a motion to sign task order no. 2. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried. Council also discussed hiring a lobbyist to represent Swanville during the bonding bill session in the State Senate.

Angie VanRissegham, city insurance agent, was present to go over the city’s insurance renewal with the League of Mn Cities. Angie went over the appraisal which was conducted by the League this past fall.

Council had questions on the property replacement costs. Angie will visit with the League and report back to council.

Water and sewer rates were discussed to raise more funds for the water tower. After discussion, Tony Maciej made a motion to raise the water and sewer rates 3% and add another 25c to the meter monthly charge. Water monthly base rate will be 18.84+5.52 per thousand gallons, Sewer monthly base rate will be 16.72+ 6.59 per thousand gallons and meter fee is $2.25. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Increase will be added to the net monthly billing.

Mayor Lange presented Resolution #21-0105 which is on the rising cost of water and wastewater issues and the impact on businesses and residents of our city. This resolution will be sent to our state legislators.

Norm Carlson made a motion to sign Resolution #210105. John Dragseth seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange will meet with Region 5 representatives about an Energy & Environment Planning Grant for the City and report back to council.

Jim Molitor reported on a new lawn mower for the city. With the trade in of the old mower there will be a cost of $7,500.00 for a new mower with a little wider cut. Jim Molitor made a motion to purchase the new mower and trade in the old one. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

This being the first meeting of the year, the following organizational actions were made: 1. Jim Molitor will be acting Mayor in the absence of Mayor Lange.

2. The First State Bank of Swanville will be the designated depository of the City.

The Morrison County Record will be the designated official newspaper of the City.

3. The regular meeting date for the City Council meeting is the first Tuesday after the first Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. Special meeting only after proper notification and publication.

4. The Bond of the City Clerk/Treasurer will be set at $12,000.00.

5. MILLWOOD TOWNSHIP ANNUAL ELECTION

Notice is hereby given: To the qualified voters of Millwood Township, the annual election will be held on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the City of St. Rosa park. In case of inclement weather, the meeting and election may be postponed until the third Tuesday in March.

Minutes from the January 4th, 2021 meeting were read and approved, a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Sara Macho to approve, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved, a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Kevin Rohde. Finance report was accepted.

Next the city discussed the current bills/invoices and upon a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies bills were paid.

Next the City Council discussed old business and new business – Old Business - City received an email from Greater Gas company in regard to Natural gas options for the town. They were not able to attend our February meeting but we’re going to make a new assessment for the town once they reviewed mapping, easements and permits. City hopes to have an update in time for our March meeting.

New Business- Council has decided to put on an Easter Egg hunt for the kids in the Lions park on Saturday, April 4th at 10:00 am. City will put up posters for the event and post on Facebook. A motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde to approve the Easter Egg hunt, upon vote motion carried.

Since no further topics needed to be discussed the meeting was adjourned by a motion from Sharon Erickson and seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote, motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray called the DNR office in Little Falls about the access on Little Birch Lake but has no response yet. Ray had Erv spread some sand/salt mix on Mary’s Lake Road, 116th and some others that were getting slippery. Ray plans to call Tim Edgerton, Parks & Tails about possible cost sharing for dust control on Arctic Drive lake access.

He will work with Erv to get an estimate for dust control on all of the Township’s gravel roads.

Additional agenda item: The annual audit meeting is set for Feb. 8, 2021 at 8:00 pm. At this time the Township’s Annual meeting will be held in person with masks and social distancing required. Discussion on the dust control will be on the agenda.

Todd County Health & Human Services is currently scheduling Todd County residents aged 65 and over for COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Residents who would like to schedule an appointment should call 320-732-4500, and press option 1, on Fridays between the hours of 12 pm and 4:30 pm. Understand that there is limited vaccine available each week and not everyone who calls will be able to be scheduled for the following week. We encourage residents, who are unable to get an appointment, to call back each Friday to get scheduled for future vaccination clinics.

Where does buying a house fit in your Baby Steps plan?

-Heather Dear Heather, Buying a home when you’re broke is the easiest way I know to become a foreclosure statistic. I’m glad you two are being thoughtful and sensible about taking such a big step.

If you remember, in Baby Step 1 I advise people to save up a beginner emergency fund of $1,000. Baby Step 2 is paying off all consumer debt from smallest to largest using the debt snowball method. Then, Baby Step 3 is where you go back and grow your emergency fund to a full three to six months of living expenses.

With all this in mind, let’s call getting ready to buy a home Baby Step 3b. Save up for a down payment of at least 20 percent to avoid PMI (private mortgage insurance).

Also, make sure any mortgage loan is a 15year, fixed rate loan, where the payments are no more than 25 percent of your monthly take-home pay.

Doing it this way may delay your dream

of being a homeowner for a while, but it will help ensure your new home is a blessing and not a financial curse!

-Dave Dear Dave, How far in advance do you recommend figuring future purchases into your budget?

-Robbie Dear Robbie, I recommend starting to put money aside, and including it in your budget as soon as you know the need for an item is a real possibility. Waiting until things go wrong or something breaks down will leave you in a real mess, more times than not.

For example, if you’re pretty sure you’ll need another vehicle in a year or two, the smart thing is to start putting money aside now. Do some research on prices, then do the math to see how much you’ll need to set aside each month.

And remember, it’s a whole lot easier to save money when you don’t have things like credit card payments and other debt hanging around your neck. That’s one of the big reasons I want to help people learn to live debt-free!

Dear Motor Medics, I am moving to Colorado Springs this month from Sunny Texas where the weather will be much colder. Today we are in the coldest snap I have ever seen with a high of just 5 degrees which is super cold for us. We do not talk about winter tires or wiper blades or anything of the like here so that is my question. Do I need to get winter wipers and tires if I am going to live in a winter climate?

-Martin in Temple, Texas Dear Martin, That is a perfect question Martin. Here is the thing with “winter” items like tires and wiper blades. At first glance they can look identical, but they are not. Winter tires, even though they may have similar tread are much different by design. Have you ever picked up a garden hose or extension cord that is very cold and felt that it was extremely hard to bend? That is the same way that an all-season tire or wiper blade reacts in very cold weather. The chemical compound in the tires and wiper blades are designed for warm weather and although very strong, they are not the best choice for winter and cold. The tires and blades need to bend easily to conform to the road and glass to get the best traction and to keep in contact with the glass and road and a winter compound tire and wiper blade is the best choice for driver safety.

Dear Motor Medics, I found a great deal on a car that is in Phoenix, Arizona. I was looking for this older model of Tahoe for an awfully long time with no rust and this is where I found it. It is a 2004 Tahoe with 70k miles, 4x4 and 5.3 engine. I live up here in Minnesota and being that this truck was in Arizona its entire life I wonder what it will need to make it up here in the North. Do you typically have to do anything to prepare a southern vehicle for winter use?

Dear Tom, Cars should work anywhere you use them when properly cared for. With that said we can tell you that on average, a large amount of vehicle maintenance goes unperformed. As drivers, a lot of us just drive our vehicles until something goes wrong and make repairs to cover that one problem when it occurs. Therefore, if you have a car that has been driven mostly in the warm southern climate it could have some worn spark plugs, carbon buildup, dirty injectors or other items that would not be an issue in warm weather but could contribute to warm weather starting issues. You will want to have your local mechanic check the vehicle over and give you advice on general state of tune times needed and be sure to check all of the fluids and belts and hoses to get ready for the cold.

A Plane Funny

A large passenger plane is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h at 35,000 feet, when suddenly an F-22 Raptor appears. The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: “Airbus flight, a boring flight isn’t it? Take care and have a look here!”

He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breathtaking dive. He loops back next to the plane and asks, “Well, how was that?”

The airplane pilot answers: “Very impressive, but now have a look here!” The jet pilot watches the plane, but nothing happens. It continues to fly stubbornly straight, with the same speed.

After five minutes, the plane pilot radioed, “Well, what are you saying now?”

The jet pilot asks confused: “What did you do?”

The other laughs and says, “I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the flight to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake.”
