Honesty is the best policy -By Harvey Mackay Once upon a time on the outskirts of a big city stood an old temple where young boys would come to live and learn from an old monk. One day the monk gathered his students and told them: “I am growing old and slow. I can no longer provide for the needs of the temple as I once did.

I want you to go into the city and follow the rich people. When no one is looking – and only when no one is looking – you must steal their purses. That way we will have enough money to keep our school alive.”

The boys said in disbelief: “But master, you have taught us that it is wrong to steal.”

The monk replied: “It would be wrong to steal if it were not absolutely necessary. Just remember, you must not be seen!”

The boys looked nervously among themselves and quietly began to leave.

However, one student remained so the monk asked him, “Why did you not go with the others?”

“I heard master,” said the boy quietly.

“But you said that we had to steal without being seen. I know that there is no place on Earth that I would not be seen, for I would always see myself.”

“Excellent!” exclaimed the monk. “That is just the lesson I hoped my students would learn.

Run and tell your friends to return to the temple before they get us into trouble.”

Honesty is and will always be the best policy. Telling the truth at all times matters in so many ways, from building your reputation to improving your relationships. Your word has to be your bond.

Maybe that is why Thomas Jefferson said, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.”

Or take a page from our first President, George Washington, who famously said he could not tell a lie when asked about the newly hewn cherry tree. Honest Abe Lincoln was also a paragon of truthfulness. As we celebrate Presidents’ Day, these are role models to uphold.

Honesty, ethics, integrity, values, morals are interchangeable because they all convey the single attribute that determines whether a person or an organization can be trusted. If truth ever stands in your way, you are headed in the wrong direction.

Every time dishonesty wins, it gets harder to convince our children that honesty is the best policy. Complete honesty in little things is not a little thing at all.

Sam Rayburn, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was once asked: “Mr. Speaker, you see probably a hundred people a day. You tell each one, ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ or ‘Maybe.’ You are never seen taking notes on what you told them, but I have never heard of you forgetting anything you promised. What is your secret?”

Rayburn carefully eyed his questioner and replied, “If you tell the truth the first time, you don’t have to remember.”

I have always tried to follow Sam Rayburn’s advice because if you always tell the truth, you don’t need a good memory.

Think about your own dealings with businesses, organizations and even personal friends. Do you patronize a store that makes promises they don’t keep or that sells products that don’t perform as expected? Would you donate to a charity that invests more in promotion than in helping others? Do you continue friendships with people who lie to

you?

Of course not. As the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

Honesty is so important that there’s actually a day to celebrate it: April 30, 2022, is Honesty Day. Author M. Hirsh Goldberg, author of “The Book of Lies: Fibs, Tales, Schemes, Scams, Fakes, and Frauds That Have Changed the Course of History and Affect Our Daily Lives,” created the day in the early 1990s. He placed it strategically on the final day of April to contrast with April Fool’s Day (lies!) at the beginning of the month.

Here’s a fish story that can actually be believed.

After fishing all day and not getting so much as a nibble, the fisherman went back to shore, loaded his boat on the trailer and began the drive home. Before reaching home, he stopped at a grocery store advertising fresh fish.

“Throw me a dozen of the biggest fish you have,” he said to the woman at the counter.

“Throw them? Why?” she asked.

“Because I’m going to catch them. I may be a lousy fisherman, but I’m not a liar.”

Mackay’s Moral: Only those on the level can climb the highest peaks.

When we spent more time listening to the radio, we would be subjected to hearing commercials.

Crash: February 11, 2022: At approximately 3:00 a.m., received a report of a semi that had rolled onto its side near the address of 31437 County Road 65 in Oak Township. This address is located approximately 1 mile east of the city of Melrose. The caller reported one occupant appeared to be inside.

Upon arrival deputies learned that the semi had an adult male that was trapped in the cab.

The driver, Frederick Ettel, 73, of Freeport was extracted from the semi and transported to the Melrose Hospital by ambulance. The trailer was carrying approximately 40,000 pounds of milk.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Melrose Fire and Rescue, Melrose Ambulance and Melrose Police Department responded to the scene. The weather conditions are believed to be the cause of the crash.

Computer Fraud: The victim reported receiving a warning on their computer indicating that they had been hacked. She was then contacted by someone claiming to be from Microsoft, who said they would assist with the problem. They instructed the victim to purchase gift cards, which they did. They were also instructed to deposit $1,000 in a bitcoin machine at the mall.

They also talked the victim into supplying photos of the front and back of their credit card and sending that information. The loss in this case is about $20,000. The victim is working with the bank and credit card company to recoup the loss. Remember folks, the best practice is to only provide personal information when you have initiated the contact and are sure of who you are talking with.

Damian B. Grossman

Damian B. Grossman, age 36 of Sauk Centre, passed away after a long battle with cancer on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 18 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.

Thursday, February 17 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Friday, February 18 at the church in Melrose.

Damian Blake Grossman was born June 13, 1985 in Alexandria, Minnesota to Kevin and Marian (Ninneman) Grossman. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School. After high school, he worked at various places including McDonalds, Wacosa, and Cashwise.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose. He enjoyed playing cards, bowling, shooting pool, and was a huge fan of all kinds of music. Damian was a simple man who enjoyed a simple life.

Survivors include his parents, Kevin and Marian Grossman of Sauk Centre; brother, Tony (Ashley) Grossman of Brooklyn Park; and niece, Rhea Grossman of Brooklyn Park.

Damian was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence and Marie Grossman and Harold and Marie Ninneman; aunt, Mary Albrektsen; and cousins, Ross Lemon and Hannah and Alexandra Muilenberg.

Casket bearers will be Dallas Lemon, Nathan Grossman, Nathan Neterval, Matt Olson, Jeremiah Sayles, and Steven Hartman.

Readers will be Dallas Lemon and Tony Grossman.

Memorials are preferred.

David Lyle Dorn, age 74, of Burtrum; passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on February 1, 2022.

Preceded in death by parents, Lyle and Gloria (née Stroschein); and brothers, Dennis and Douglas.

Survived by loving wife of 53 years, Judy (née Frendt); daughter, Lorrie; son, David (Jennifer); grandsons, Aiden and Benjamin; sister, Diane (Tom) Grahn; sister-in-law, Dianne Dorn; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held later in the summer; more information will be published closer to the event. Private interment at the MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Michael Steven Hinman

Michael Steven Hinman, 67 passed away after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest on February 1, 2022. Mike was hospitalized for several days being treated for a couple of cardiac issues, but was released around noon on February 1st. He relayed feeling really good and felt he had received good care while hospitalized.

Just after arriving at home, he collapsed and was unable to be resuscitated.

Mike was born on January 30, 1955.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Keith and Marge (Dolence) Hinman, his grandparents Andrew and Josephine Dolence and Art and Eva Hinman.

Mike is survived by his brothers: David (Elaine) St. Cloud, John (Kathy) Grey Eagle, Bill (Amy) Grey Eagle, and Jerry (Cindy) Lino Lakes.

Two children: Mackenzie Hanson (spouse and 3 children) and Joe Hinman. 8 nieces and nephews and 13 grand nieces and nephews.

Mike worked in the hospitality business in St. Pete's Beach, Florida. His boss stated he was one of his very best employees, and Mike made lots of friends wherever he went.

A Catholic prayer service and a celebration of life will be held in Grey Eagle at a later date, possibly in May. Mike was an organ donor.

Paige M. Luethmers

Paige M. Luethmers, age 29 of Albany, passed away after a courageous, yearlong battle with cancer on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at her home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m.

Friday, February 18 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Paige Marie Austing was born December 15, 1992 in Melrose, Minnesota to Dale and Lisa (Blommel) Austing. She grew up on the family farm near St. Rosa and graduated from Melrose High School in 2011. Paige furthered her education by graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in Agricultural Economics and Communications. Paige married the love of her life, Daniel Luethmers on November 24, 2018 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa.

They welcomed Reid Marie on March 13, 2020, the joy of her life. Paige was employed by Stearns Financial and was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and Christian Women. Paige made the world a better place with her smile and positive attitude. We cannot simplify Paige’s life and spirit into words. For those of you who knew Paige, you just know.

Survivors include her husband, Dan Luethmers of Albany; daughter, Reid Luethmers; parents, Dale and Lisa Austing of Grey Eagle; father and motherin-law, Ken and Kathy Luethmers of Freeport; siblings, Adam Austing (Brenna Voss) of Freeport, Sam and Amy Austing, both at home; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eric and Melissa Luethmers of Albany and Brad and Nicole Luethmers of Albany; nieces and nephews, Payton, Logan, Tegan, and Breckyn; and many loving relatives and friends.

Paige was preceded in death by her grandparents, Aloys and Helen Blommel and Elmer and Florence Austing.

Betty M. Keenan, age 96 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, February 7, 2022 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Wednesday, February 23 at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Parish prayers will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Betty Mae Alpers was born August 20, 1925 in Bear Lake Township, Michigan to Paul and Irma (Greve) Alpers. She was united in marriage to Charles “Chuck” Keenan on June 19, 1947 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Portal, North Dakota. Betty and her husband owned and operated numerous small businesses including the Flaxton Hotel in North Dakota and Lakeside Resort in Sauk Centre. She had an adventurous spirit who loved traveling the United States and internationally with her husband. Betty’s faith, family, and service to her community were the most important aspects of her life.

Survivors include her children, Barb (Steve) Avery of Sartell, Terry (Mary Kay) Keenan of Willmar, Mary (Joe) Miller of Chicago, Illinois, Margy (Jim) Umhoefer of Sauk Centre, and Tom (Martha) Keenan of Chaska; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Chu of San Francisco, California.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck Keenan; parents; son, Jim Keenan; brothers and sisters, Paul, Ray, Helen, Lois, and JoAnn. Memorials are preferred to Holy Family School in Sauk Centre, Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta, or to donor’s choice.

Carl E. Norris

Carl E. Norris, age 80 of Brooten, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 11, 2022.

He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family after a short battle with pneumonia at Alomere Health Hospital in Alexandria, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m.

Monday, February 21 at Harvest Church in Freeport with Pastor Allen Wieling officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m.

Monday at the church in Freeport.

Carl Ervin Norris was born September 17, 1941 in Spencer, Iowa to Frank and Elva (Freeburg) Norris. He graduated from Spring Lake Park in1959.

His first job after high school was for Honeywell, he soon realized working indoors was not for him. Carl was a dreamer, and one of his gifts was to work with his hands, so he left Honeywell for construction work. On January 18, 1962 he married Judith Kneiszler in Minneapolis. Since his real dream was to be a farmer, once they moved to Hinkley, he began farming and worked construction on the side.

Since his goal was to farm full-time, Carl and Judy bought a farm in Atwater and they farmed with dairy cattle for 11 years. The family had countless family memories growing up on the farm, where the father figure was always present. Carl exemplified a great love for God, family, music, and a strong work ethic which are all evident in his children and their families. They then sold the farm and moved to Long Prairie and milked a smaller herd of dairy cattle for four more years. Due to physical limitations, Carl had to stop farming, and he drove semi over the road for 16 years.

Carl and Judy lived in many different towns, from Staples, to Sauk Centre, Luverne to Eagle Bend and finally Brooten. Carl’s passion for music was certainly evident as he played bass, accordion, piano, and both electric and acoustic guitar. His wonderful voice could be heard in the church choir, or singing with Judy for church specials, but he experienced true joy as he played guitar on the church worship team with his two boys for a number of years. Carl was happiest when he was with his family.

He was a member of Harvest Church in Freeport.

He had been a church Deacon and played in the praise band in the various churches he attended. He enjoyed restoring pickups and cars, woodworking, watching tractor pulls, motorsports, and deer hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Norris of Brooten; children, Deborah (Steve) Struthers of Cokato, Steve (Danelle) Norris of Melrose, Victoria (Daniel) Mensen of Osakis, and Aaron (Julie) Norris of Albany; 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (David) Capistrant of Grove City and Beverly (Denny) Smith of Litchfield; and many other extended family members.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roland L. “Bud” Norris; sister, Linda R. Davis; and brother-in-law, Bob Davis.

Casket bearers will be his grandsons, Justin, Jordan, and Jake Struthers, and Jared, Michael, and Andrew Norris.

Arvin L. Kurowski

Arvin L. Kurowski, 82 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Swanville, MN, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at Diamond Willow Senior Care in Little Falls, MN. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. A visitation will be held from 4-8 P.M. on Thursday and from 9-10 A.M. on Friday all at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial will take place in the St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Swanville, MN. Caring for Arvin and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.

Arvin was born on January 3, 1940 in Little Falls, MN to the late Louis and Phyllis (Zyvoloski) Kurowski. He grew up in the Little Falls area where he attended school. Arvin was united in marriage to Beverly Beto and together they farmed dairy cattle in Pike Creek Township for many years. He also owned and operated AK Trucking, hauling livestock and hauled milk.

After retiring from farming he drove trucks for various places in the area on a part-time basis.

Arvin was an avid woodworker, creating unique items from salvaged materials he found. Arvin also worked as a carpenter for Christensen Construction for several years. He honorably served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1962 until his honorable discharge in May of 1968. Arvin was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

Arvin is survived by sons, Ray (Jill) Kurowski of Long Prairie, MN, Rick (Teresa) Kurowski of Little Falls, MN and Randy (Margaret) Kurowski of Little Falls, MN; brother, Dennis Kurowski of Long Prairie, MN; special friend, Elaine Schomer of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Casey Kurowski, Brandon Kurowski, Cody Kurowski, Briana Kurowski, Nathan Kurowski, Thomas Swenson, Dillan Kalis, Kayla Kurowski and Emily Kurowski; and great-grandchildren, Bentley, Liam and Mike.

Mark Allen Hintzen was born July 1, 1958 in Litchfield, Minnesota to Robert and Alyce (Anderson) Hintzen. He was baptized, received first communion, and was confirmed at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church of Sauk Centre. He graduated from St. Cloud State University with a Bachelors Degree. Mark worked in the area of sales in Minneapolis for many years. He then moved to Sauk Centre and worked for T & B Lawn Care of Alexandria, Jason Bromenshenkel Lawn Care of Sauk Centre, and drove bus for Sauk Centre Public School. He enjoyed watching football and golf. Home cooked meals were on the top of his list along with ice cream cake. Mark was known for his good sense of humor and quick wit. He loved his nieces, great nieces and nephew. He was a devoted and active member of his Catholic faith.

Survivors include his mother, Alyce Hintzen of Sauk Centre; brothers, Paul (Shawn) Hintzen of Sauk Centre and John (Melody) Hintzen of Chaska; aunt, Geraldine (Lyman) Benshoof of Spokane, Washington; nieces, Amy (Tanner) Johnson of New London, Laura Hintzen of Minneapolis, Alyssa Keller of Houston, Texas, and Katie Hintzen of Minneapolis; great nieces and nephew, Lindy, Lena, and Cooper Johnson all of New London.

M a r c e l l a B. “Sally” Radermacher, age 99 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A prayer service was held Tuesday, February 15 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Marcella Bernadine Kemper was born July 19, 1922 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Bernadine (Austing) Kemper. She was united in marriage to Norman Radermacher on November 15, 1944 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. As a young lady, she waitressed and also helped in their grocery store in Sauk Centre. They sold their store and moved to Tracy where they purchased and established a Red Owl store. After ten years they returned to Sauk Centre where she worked in the Sauk Centre Red Owl store.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, the Sauk Centre American Legion Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens. While Norman was still living, they always had a big garden which is why she started helping out at Tutti Fruitti Market Farm.

Some of her favorite activities were going dancing to old time music, and fishing, which she did a lot. She loved sewing quilts and enjoyed

There’s a lot of buzz these days surrounding all the “quick” and “easy” ways to clean up debt and get control of your finances. But the truth is neither one is ever easy. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Debt consolidation is basically a loan that combines all your debts into one single payment. Sounds like a great idea at first, right? But then you find out the lifespan of your loans increase, and that means you’ll stay in debt even longer than before. The low interest rate that looks so appealing in the beginning usually goes up over time, too. Stretching out the amount of time you’re paying off debt, plus adding interest, is just dumb.

Debt settlement companies are awful.

I want to know if it is necessary to connect the last jumper cable connection which is always my negative cable to the engine block instead of right to the battery which seems more convenient to me. I have received many different answers and I just want to know what the proper way is. Can you help me Motor Medics?

-Barb in Henderson, Texas Dear Barb, Great question for the safety of anyone who ever must jump start a car. Many people connect the cables directly to the terminals on both batteries claiming it makes it easier to start and this is extremely dangerous! If your battery cables on the vehicle and jumper cables are both in good shape connecting them properly will work just fine. When you make the last connection of the jumper cables it is normal for the connection to give off a small spark. This spark can easily ignite the hydrogen gas given off by a battery under normal operation and cause an explosion.

This explosion can be powerful enough to send the sulfuric acid and pieces of battery shrapnel flying towards you injuring you. To prevent this, you need to make the last connection away from the battery which would be the engine block.

Always consult your owner’s manual.

When we purchased our latest car, it came this way and in the place of it was a can of tire sealant and an inflator can. Do you remember the “telephone” game you played as a kid? One person would whisper to the first child. Then that child would whisper the same thing to their neighbor. I am not sure of what the point was when I was a kid because it never came out from what the original person said. I am not sure if they were trying to teach us to pay attention or to listen well, or maybe not mumble when we talk. In our world today there are many ways to communicate, and they are way more effective than whispering to your neighbor.

I cannot even keep track of the times that either I was misunderstood, or I misunderstood someone’s text to me, or an email, or even Facebook messaging. I remember one church that I attended, that I was an elder at. The pastor wanted to do something special for the graduates, so we put it in the bulletin four weeks ahead, and the newsletter and announced it from the pulpit. The pastor wanted the graduates to come with their graduation gown, but one family did not get the message. They showed up to church that morning and found out that they missed it somehow.

(Now it would help if they came to church regularly). They were mad because they were not told, but went home anyway to get their daughter's graduation gown.

I just want to say here that God wants to talk to us, and He wants us to talk to Him. The scary part is He knows your heart and intentions. God wants a relationship with us but is willing to wait until we come to Him. God communicates to us through His Word, so we better be in it, every day. We talk with Him through prayer, but sometimes we do not know what

Accident: February 11, 2022: At approximately 11:32 a.m., received a report of a one-vehicle rollover on 30th Street, just west of Great River Road, approximately two miles southeast of Bowlus, MN in Two Rivers Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 18-yearold Rachael Hartsock from Burtrum, MN was traveling east on 30th Street behind another vehicle. Hartsock attempted to brake going down a hill and lost control of the vehicle on the icy road.

Hartsock’s vehicle went into the ditch and rolled.

Hartsock was transported to St. Cloud Hospital

by Mayo Clinic Ambulance with unknown injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Bowlus First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.
