Customer service in the Internet age -By Harvey Mackay

For years, we believed that if customers received bad service, they would pass the word along to 20 or so people. Conversely, if they were on the receiving end of great service, they might tell a few folks, but not in numbers anywhere near the bad-news story.

Enter the Internet. Bad reports can span the globe instantly. Good reports can too, but they are not shared as frequently.

One company that learned this lesson the hard way is United Airlines. In March 2008, Dave Carroll and his band, Sons of Maxwell, were flying on United Airlines from Halifax to Omaha with a stopover in Chicago. At that first stop, a woman seated near the band looked out the window and exclaimed, “They’re throwing guitars out there!”

Band members witnessed their expensive instruments being handled roughly. Carroll’s guitar alone was a $3,500 Taylor model. Concerned, he approached the flight attendant and was sent to another agent outside the plane.

But that person claimed to have no authority and walked away. A third employee at the gate dismissed his complaint, explaining “that’s why we make you sign the waiver.” Problem: Carroll and the band members had neither been offered nor signed such a waiver.

When he finally got to check out his guitar in Omaha, he discovered the base of the guitar had been smashed. Even a $1,200 repair didn’t restore it to its original condition. And Carroll’s experience with United as he sought restitution is a horror story that spanned nine months of phone calls, emails, faxes, buck-passing, and a final “Sorry, but we’re not paying.”

Most of us would have given up at that point, but then most of us aren’t as creative as Dave Carroll. He turned it into a career opportunity.

“At that moment it occurred to me that I had been fighting a losing battle ...” Carroll wrote. “The system is designed to frustrate affected customers into giving up their claims, and United is very good at it. But I realized then that as a songwriter and traveling musician I wasn’t without options.

“In my final reply to (the United rep) I told her that I would be writing three songs about United and my experience in the whole matter. I would then make videos for these songs and offer them for free download on YouTube . . . My goal: to get one million hits in one year.”

United did take notice, and it was reported on CNN that after 50,000 views, they admitted that it was a “unique learning opportunity” and made the experience part of their training program.

At that point, they finally offered Carroll restitution, which he refused and encouraged them to give it to another deserving passenger.

Can any company afford this kind of publicity? United has survived, albeit with a tarnished reputation.

Customer service has taken on a whole new meaning with the rise of websites like Angie’s List and Yelp, which provide unfiltered reviews of services and products. Some require subscriptions, others are free. Google your company and see if you appear in the blogosphere. And never underestimate the power of YouTube and Facebook groups.

Undertake a top-to-bottom evaluation of your company. Examine the return policies, the authority given to representatives who deal with the public, the follow-up after a sale, and even more importantly, after an issue has been resolved to make sure the customer is satisfied with the outcome.

Then take a brutally honest look at your top management and reinforce the attitude that the customer may not always be right, but they are always the customer. Message: Excellent customer service is paramount to your success.

Survey your customers and give them the opportunity to rate your service. It’s a chance to improve your company without having to hire a consultant.

Then, incorporate the changes that you can.

How you serve your customers should never be debatable. When there are unrealistic expectations from a customer, honesty is the only acceptable answer. If you can’t make a customer happy, at least help them understand your limitations. Help them find the company that can satisfy them, if necessary. Even if you must absorb the cost, it’s probably going to be cheaper than fighting 10,000,000 hits on YouTube.

Mackay’s Moral: If you don’t serve your customer, they’ll serve notice.

Obituaries Rita V. Kostreba

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Rita V. Kostreba, age 83 of Holdingford will be Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 10:00AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. Father Glen Krystosek will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service. Rita died peacfully at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany Sunday evening surrounded by her family.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM, Friday, February 18 at the Miller-Carlin Brenny Funeral Home in Holdingford.

Parish prayers will be at 5 and Christian Mothers will pray at 6 at the funeral home on Friday. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Brenny Funeral Home in

Betty Rodenwald

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Betty Rodenwald, age 95 of Albany, was Wednesday, February 16 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Betty died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.

Betty was born October 19, 1915 in Melrose to Ben and Leana (Koch) Renneker. She married Elmer Rodenwald on November 25, 1937 in Melrose. The couple moved to a farm near Albany and they owned the West End Bar and Tavern in Albany. In the early 1960’s, they moved to Richey, MT where they owned the Richey Bakery and Cafe. They moved to a farm near Holdingford in the 1970’s. Betty

Rita was born April 7, 1927 to Anton and Mary (Nagorski) Palluck in Sobeski. She grew up Stearns county area, later moving to Minneapolis, and eventually coming back to live the rest of her life in the Holdingford area. She married Vince Kostreba on June 26, 1945 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Vince later passed away on August 5, 1993. Rita worked in manufacturing at the Honeywell plant as well as Fingerhut. She was a member of the Christian Mothers, the Opole Catholic War Vets Auxillary, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole.

Rita is survived by her children Roger (Irene) Kostreba, Elk River; Sandra (Robert) Mohs, St. Joseph; 13 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Mary and Anton Palluck, her husband Vince Kostreba, and her siblings Joanne Lauderdale, Sally Anderson, Conrad, Joe, John, Leo, Stanley, Florian Acker, Isadore, her twin brother Richard, and Lawrence Palluck.

Betty was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, Catholic Aid, the St. Ann’s Mission Group and the Waite Park American Legion Auxiliary.

Betty is survived by her children, Marie (Norbert) Schleppenbach, Albany; Gerald (Carole) Rodenwald, Albany; David (Kristin) Rodenwald, Rochester; LeeAnn Renneker, Arvada, CO; her brother, Norbert (Adele) Renneker, Freeport; 19 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer in April of 1978, her sons, Dale Ralph Rodenwald and Ervin Rodenwald, her brothers and sisters, Mary Wiewel, Ben Renneker, John Renneker, Joe Renneker, Frances Stueve, Johanna Rodenwald, Agnes Neumann, and one great-great-granddaughter, Cadence Hope Feiler.

Robert N. “Bob” Gomer, age 89 of Burtrum, died Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at St. Michael’s Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

F u n e r a l Services were held at 11 a.m.

Monday, February 14 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Tibbetts officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood cemetery.

Robert Norman Gomer was born November 29, 1921 in Frazee, Minnesota to August and Henrietta (DeVries) Gomer.

When he was two years old, the family moved to Brooten. He completed through the 8th grade at the country school. When he was 19, he moved to Oregon to work in the saw mills. Bob returned to Brooten to care for the home place in Brooten.

S h e r w i n R. “Herm” Tschida, age 45 of St. Francis, Stearns County, died tragically on Wednesday, February 9 after injuries sustained from an automobile accident.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m.

Tuesday, February 15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala with Rev. Mike Kellogg officiating. Interment was in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in St. Francis.

Sherwin Roderick Tschida was born December 4, 1965 in Melrose, Minnesota to Victor and Beatrice (Douvier) Tschida.

He married Dawn Muellner on October 30, 1999 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Herm ran his father’s farm for a number of years. He then worked at Schaefer’s Market in Sauk Centre from 1994 through 2008 and was commonly referred to as “The Meat Man”. In the fall of 2008, he started his own meat processing business called Herm’s Country Meats in St. Francis.

He was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis.

South Dakota. They resided in Brooten until June of 1961 and then moved to the Grey Eagle/Burtrum area where they have resided for the past 50 years.

Bob was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, growing potatoes and sweet corn, gardening, making bird houses, and loved playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lila Gomer of Burtrum; children, David (Sylvia) Gomer of Monterey, California, Dale (Julie) Gomer of Burtrum, and Darla (Dave) Roering of Burtrum; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Lewie (Mary) Gomer.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Willard, James, and August; and sisters, June, Delores, and Carol.

Serving as casket bearers were Brad Gomer, Blain Gomer, Jamie Nelson, Kern Nelson, Nathan Denk, and Jerome Denk.

Herm was preceded in death by his grandparents, Herman and Mary Tschida and Frank and Rose Douvier.

Serving as casket bearers were Scott Tschida, Shawn Tschida, Sam Tschida, Ves Tschida, Stan Tschida, Sheldon Tschida, Stewart Tschida, Ron Ostendorf, and Mike Sunder. Cross bearer was Ashley Tschida and scripture bearer was Jordan Tschida.

Honorary bearers were Tom Gerads, Jim Herdering, Jeff Herdering, Kevin Muellner, Glenn Boeckermann, Brian Boeckermann, Steve Boeckermann, and Paul Boeckermann.

Federick Lentz

Services celebrating the life of Frederick “Fritz” Lentz, age 82, of Avon will be 11:00 AM Thursday, February 17, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud.

Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Sauk Rapids. Fritz died Friday, February 11, 2011.

There will be a gathering of friends and family after 10:00 AM Thursday at the church.

Fritz was born December 18, 1928 in Henry, South Dakota to Edward and Mable (Jaehn) Lentz. He was in the U.S. Army, serving in Korea, from 1951 until 1952.

He married Lorraine Grams on March 28, 1954 in Fairfax, MN. The couple lived in Gibbon until 1966 and in Glencoe from 1966 until 1999. Fritz was co-owner of

K&L Cabinets in Glencoe until he retired in 1999, at age 70. Fritz and Lorraine moved to Avon in 1999. Fritz was a master at wood working and he enjoyed building many things for his family. He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud; the Gibbon American Legion and the Glencoe VFW. Fritz is survived by his wife, Lorraine, Avon; his two children, Jon (Lori) Lentz, St Cloud and Jodi (Chris Fandel) Lentz, St. Cloud. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan Lentz, St. Cloud; his brother and sisters, Edward (Verona) Lentz; Plymouth; Beatrice Koester, Glencoe; Marlian Bandow, Gibbon; Barbara (Ronald) Rieke, Gibbon; Evelyn Herschman, Glendale, AZ; and sister-in-law, Betty Lentz.

Fritz is preceded in death by his parents, two children, Julie and Jay Lentz; and his brothers and sisters, August Lentz, Henry Lentz, Otto Lentz, Daniel Lentz, William Lentz, Herbert Lentz, Leigh Lentz, Herman Lentz, Alma Deunow, and Edna Kremer.

Swanville Bible Church to host Mid-Winter Thaw Feb. 20 The Swanville Bible Church is hosting a “Mid-Winter Thaw” on Sunday, February 20th, from 1:30-4:00 p.m. at the Swanville Park Building. The Swanville community is invited to attend, free of charge. We will have family-friendly

Dispatcher Carol Marlow retiring Dispatcher Carol Marlow has been employed with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office since May of 1989 and has recently announced that she will be retiring from her position. Carol started her employment as a Jailer/Dispatch and in 1995 moved to strictly Dispatch.

Carol has many stories to tell about her experiences as an employee with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. Her most memorable incident was in June of 1999 when she assisted a caller in delivering a baby. By using her training through an Emergency Medical Dispatcher course, she was able to talk the caller through the delivery. The baby was not breathing and she was able to give the father proper procedures to start breathing and could then hear the baby crying in the back ground.

The hardest part of her job is when people call in an emergency and the caller recognizes her voice and calls her by name. That makes these calls very personal in nature and it is difficult to separate her personal feelings from the professional response needed to handle the call. She recalled one incident where her husband called 911 and reported that Carol’s mother was having difficulty breathing.

Grey Eagle Veterans Memorial fundraiser

The planning and fund-raising for the Grey Eagle Area Veterans Memorial is on schedule and making excellent progress. The veterans committee of Gordy Reecy, Bob Pallansch, Lanae McDermond, and Carl Butler have developed the plan and are looking forward to springtime construction. The goal is to have most of it done by Memorial Day. Last fall cement footings were poured for the granite memorial and the three flag poles. The committee has determined the inscriptions for the sixfoot tall black granite memorial that is the center piece for tribute to area veterans and veterans from the entire United States. The granite company has been hired and they tell us it will be here in early May. The next step will be the viewing area and walkway. This will be reddish colored paving stones. The flag poles will be set at about this same time.

Carol will miss the people that she works with and calls the Deputies “my boys.” She has provided many quality years of service to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office and will be missed. Everyone at the Sheriff’s Office wishes her the best in her retirement.

A major feature of the memorial will be a showcase where the names of all our area veterans will be displayed.

This list will include both the deceased and the living veterans. Future veterans will be added to the list as they serve.

The committee is still planning the exact structure for the showcase. A number of community members have been working on the list of veterans this winter. Presently we have a list of about 500 that have served. We know the list will need to be corrected and added to as more people examine the showcase list.

At this time there have been 70 donations. Donations have come from individuals, businesses, and community organizations. At this time we have received a bit over $18,500. The community generosity for this endeavor has been terrific. You are to be applauded.

The committee estimates the project to cost slightly over $21,000. There are some parts of the project that we do not know the exact price of yet. As you can see we do need more donations.

The annual Upsala Area School’s Spelling Bee was held Friday, January 21st at 1:00 in the auditorium. To begin there was a total of 28 competitors. These competitors ranged from 4th graders to 8th graders. These 28 students qualified for this level of competition by scoring high enough on a written spelling test given in their classrooms. Because of some very difficult words, it took only 6 rounds to get down to the final two competitors. Rachel Prom (right) and Lacey Brezinka (left) were neck in neck in the last few rounds. After 12 rounds of competition, Rachel won. She will go on to compete in the Regional Spelling Swanville School District Spelling Bee Winner. Pictured is Anthony Doege Bee in Brainerd on Feb. 18. The Most Vital Part of Romance

By Saralee Perel Bob and I didn’t bother celebrating Valentine’s Day. We were busy and neither of us felt like going out just to buy cards and chocolate. Usually, I decorate the house with special candles and heartshaped ornaments that I’ve had for over 20 years. But I didn’t bother. So the day came and went with nothing more than a “Happy Valentine’s Day” peck on the cheek.

During a plain omelet supper, I looked over at Bob and said, “I feel badly we didn’t do anything special.” He did too. It seemed like we were two people who’d been married 28 years, and these little things just didn’t matter anymore.

But they do.

After supper, we snuggled together, recalling wonderful memories of how we met.

Thirty years ago, I taught a class called, “Life After Divorce.” Bob, a handsome blonde blue-eyed man (who looks no different to me today) was a student.

Back then, I was crazy-in-love with a fellow I’ll call Michael. I never had luck with relationships. That was because I picked guys who were commitment-phobic. I believed I could change them. Finally, I realized I was the one who needed to change.

Michael was “perfect” - funny, handsome and smart. The problem was that he wasn’t in love with me.

The more Michael would get close, then back off, the harder I’d try to win him over. But I failed. With each “failure” I felt more undesirable, which eroded my self-esteem.

While dating Michael, I started hanging out with Bob. But we were just buddies. We had a blast – biking, swimming, hiking. I never worried about what I said or if my apartment was messy. With Michael, I’d berate myself for everything I thought I’d said wrong. I’d even run words through my “Is this clever and smart?” filter before saying them.

There was no filter with Bob. I never felt self-conscious. We confided our inner secrets and spent most times in joyous laughter. If I dripped mustard on my chin from my hot dog, I didn’t care. Had that happened with Michael, I’d have been mortified.

It was such a shame that I wasn’t crazy-in-love with Bob. I can recall a pivotal moment as vividly as an earthquake. I was home, wait-

ing for Bob. I was wearing my baggy shorts and gray tee shirt. It was the only outfit I had put on, which was such a contrast to trying on outfit after outfit before seeing Michael.

Then it hit me. I had a smack-bang revelation. I said out loud, “What are you doing?” It was at this most crucial instant, like Dorothy with her slippers, that I realized that what I had been looking for had been there all along. Someone who loved me as I was, make-up or not, clever repartee or not. In other words, I had found my best friend. I can still picture looking up at him and taking the first step. I kissed him . . . and you can probably take it from there.

It was thrilling to change my destructive dating path and wise up to what’s really important. To me, true love means being each others’ best friends.

And now, after so many years of marriage, we still are.

But last month we learned that relationships can’t lie still. They need to be nurtured.

After Valentine’s Day, I put out our St. Patrick’s Day ornaments and candles.

Bob came home with a 3 dollar heartshaped cake from the “day old” bin. As he presented it to me, his eyes were brimming with happy tears. He said, “EvSaralee continued to pg 7

into further discussions.” Ms. HolmenHerbes added that Kendra’s style of learning and her personality makes her “a pleasure to work with.”

Kendra placed on the school’s “A Honor Roll” and serves as her class vice-president. She plans to participate in this year’s spring drama production and is a member of our junior high volleyball and basketball squads. Kendra said that English is her most valuable class because she “learns how to write properly.” In her favorite class, science, Kendra said “I like the experiments and learning about how things work.” Kendra has also learned valuable lessons in her short time at UHS. She stated that her most valuable life lesson is to be organized because it “makes life a lot less stressful” and her most valuable academic lesson is to pay attention in class “so you get good grades.” Kendra responded with the following advice for her classmates: “Word Hard.”

Kendra likes to quilt, scrapbook, and hang out with friends. She plans to go to college after graduation, although she’s not sure yet just what she’d like to do. Our congratulations go out to Kendra and her family. We wish her great success throughout her years at Upsala and encourage her to continue to strive to be a positive role model for others.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

After several days of hearings and testimony, a bill emerged out of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee Feb. 8 that makes great strides in addressing and correcting problems with a program known as Green Acres. The program, which allows land to remain classified as agricultural even though it may have a higher value for development or other uses, has been around for many years, but changes made in 2008 caused concern with land newly classified as non-productive.

Because of the changes made three years ago, land that was moved into this new class was deemed no longer eligible for Green Acres. A new program, called the Rural Preserve, was created for this class of land but it had requirements that many thought were too restrictive.

mum sign-up length, in addition to a requirement for a conservation plan to be established for the land to be enrolled.

The compromise that emerged from our committee maintains the Rural Preserve Program, but it does away with the two aforementioned requirements. However, it also increases the payback time for which back taxes on the land must be paid from three years to five years. This change in payback length applies to both the Green Acres and the Rural Preserve Programs and would take effect May 1, 2012. Land currently in either program and land enrolled up until the new effective date would be subject to the threeyear payback.

Had a couple of calls from constituents wondering about the rough condition of Interstate 94 around the Avon and St. John’s University area. After conferring with MnDOT, I learned that stretch of the freeway is due for a major maintenance upgrade. Bids for a “mill and overlay” project will be let in May and work will be done this summer on the stretch of roadway going west nearly all the way to Albany.

When crews have had extra time, patching potholes has been challenging because of the abundance of snow and ice, along with plenty of extremely cold and windy days. Thanks to all those who have worked long and hard this winter on our township, city, county, and state roads.

I’ve had first-hand experience with bad roads this winter. Having to be in St. Cloud one recent Monday morning for a meeting, I was up early and headed out our drive-way in the dark. Knowing the wind had been blowing all night, I should have walked down and checked the first portion of our drive before heading out. Instead, I took off in the car and hadn’t gone 100 yards before I nosed into a pretty good-sized drift and couldn’t move. My wife was none too excited to come back out with me as we hooked onto the car with the four-wheel drive pick-up and attempted to pull it

That didn’t work as the pick-up couldn’t get enough traction and simply spun. So, I had to walk down to the machine shed and plug in the diesel tractor for an hour, so that would start and we could pull my car out of the drift and blow the snow out of the road. Needless to say, I missed the meeting.

February 9, 2011: At 2:50 a.m. the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to the sene of a one vehicle property damage accident that occurred at the intersection of State HWY 28 and County Road 103 in Grey Eagle Township, Section 04. Jeffrey Walker, rural Sauk Centre, had been driving his 1996 Pontiac Grand AM GT southbound on State HWY 28 when he was unable to make the curve and went off the roadway at the intersection. Jeffrey and his passenger, BJ Wolbeck of Grey Eagle were not injured in the incident. The car received moderate damage to the front after hitting a barbed wire fence. Alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors into the accident. The incident is still under investigation.

February 11, 2011: At 5:52 p.m.

Laurie Browen of Burtrum reported the theft of three packs of cigarettes from their 1998 Ford Ranger. The theft occurred sometime between the late night hours of Feb. 10th and early morning hours of Feb. 11th. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

was siphoned from a plow truck parked in the yard. The incident occurred in the last week and a half. If anyone has any information on this incident they are asked to call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

February 11, 2011: At approximately 11:32 p.m., the Grey Eagle Fire Department responded to a hay bale fire on 271st Ave. just north of CO 8. The bale was sitting in a field just off of 271st. Ave. The bale sustained minimal damage and it was determined to be intentionally set. If anyone has any information on this incident, they are asked to call the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

Local Municipality Minutes Burnhamville Township January 25, 2011 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held January 25, 2011 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairman Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit, Bruce Johnson Louis Thompson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; and Treasurer Pam Throener.

Others present: Carol Herdering.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the minutes of the December 28, 2010 regular meeting.

Motion seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 4434 through 4444: Rev. $882.93, R&B $5,158.23. Sup. Thompson seconded the motion. Motions passed.

Correspondence included the township’s insurance letters to review.

The board heard a request from a representative from the Swanville Lions to work with the DNR to improve the Long Lake public access. The Swanville Lions would donate the money to the township for the project and the DNR would do the work. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to accept the DNR/ Swanville Lions request to improve the Long Lake public access. Motion seconded by Sup. Thompson. Sup. Johnson abstain. Motion passed.

The township election will be March 8, 2011. Sup Johnson made a motion to appoint Gloria Hobbs, Theresa Holmgren, Shirley Hulinsky as election judges and Mike Holmgren and Dorothy Strassburg and alternate judges. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion was made by Sup Johnson to appoint Gloria Hobbs, Shirley Hulinsky, Mike and Theresa Holmgren to the absentee ballot board.

The township was notified of

the Long Prairie Fire Department township meeting on Feb. 2 and Sup. Berscheit will be our representative.

The board discussed sending post card notices for the annual meeting. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to hold township clean up day on Saturday, May 21 and to include this information on the post cards sent out. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $144,526.65 before tonight’s bills. motioned by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Thompson . Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Thompson. Motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray felt the tar road wasn’t being kept as clean as it should be. Erv stated with all the almost daily snowfall it’s hard to know when to go out and when to spread gravel and salt.

Ray felt the roads should have been scraped better and suggested putting more salt in the gravel mix.

The supervisors agreed Erv should try this to see if it will help the ice buildup.

Additional agenda items: The annual audit was done with the supervisors reviewing all of the disbursements and receipts for the 2010 year. Ron shared a letter he received regarding Township Day at the Capital, March 2.

The coaches and advisors of Upsala High School are pleased to announce that Melissa George and Nathaniel Schumer have been selected as our school’s nominees for the ExCEL Award.

ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education, Melissa George and Leadership) is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens.

Melissa, the daughter of Dennis and Lisa George and Nathaniel, the son of Michelle Schumer, are two of Upsala Area Schools highest achieving students. Both Melissa and Nathaniel consistently make the A Honor Roll and both have been selected as UAS Student of the Month more than once.

At UAS Melissa is active in National Honor Society and Big Brother/ Big Sisters and she participates in a variety of extracurricular activities including: Band, pep band, volleyball, and basketball. Her favorite class is Spanish because the class is small and they all enjoy learning.

Mrs. Leen, Melissa’s Spanish teacher had this to say about her, “Melissa has been my Spanish student for three years. Besides her positive personality and willingness to challenge herself on a daily basis, her strength is her consistency in putting forward her best effort in anything I ask of her. I can count on Melissa to give 100% every time.”

Melissa’s most valuable activity is Big Brothers/Big Sisters because of “the impact it has on her “little sisters” life.”

and watching movies. Her future plans include attending a fouryear college for a job in the medical field. Melissa’s advice for the underclassmen is simply this, “Even though school can be tough sometimes, just stay strong, believe in yourself, and never Nathaniel Schumer give up.” Congratulations Melissa.

Nathaniel Schumer is also involved in a variety of activities as UAS. He participates in both the fall play and the spring musical, he is a member of Knowledge Bowl, and he is active in Student Council. Outside of school Nathaniel is involved in Boys Scouts and his church’s youth group. Nathaniel’s leadership roles have included attaining the rank of Eagle Scout and he was also the sophomore class president. He also enjoys reading, playing guitar, and broomball.

Nathan has taken a large number of college classes and his favorite class is American and World Literature because “the stories and discussions are interesting and the professor is humorous.”

Nathaniel believes that World History is his most valuable class. This class allows him to “broaden his horizons and to look beyond just studying the United States.”

Mr. Pahl, Nathaniel’s principal, had this to say about him, “Nathan is an outstanding student. He puts a lot of pressure on himself to do everything to the best of his ability. When faced with challenges he always finds a way to be successful. Nathan is an excellent nominee for this award.” Congratulations Nathaniel.

Legislative Week in Review

This legislative session continues to be interesting and challenging. We continue to work towards creating job growth and solving the budget deficit. Here is a summary of the activity of this week.

State of the State: Governor Dayton addressed a joint session of the Legislature Wednesday. The Governor is committed to massive public spending increases despite being faced with a looming $6.2 billion deficit. He reemphasized his commitment towards enormous tax increases to businesses and “the rich.” I believe that job creation and getting folks back to work should be our top priority and tax increases will slow recovery. With a healthy economy, the rest of the budget issues will work themselves out so the faster we can get jobs back, the faster we will be out of this fiscal mess. I hope the Governor will focus on job creation, not tax creation.

Early Action Budget Bill approved, promptly vetoed: On Thursday, the Senate and House passed a combined “phase one” budget bill. The bill contained $900 million worth of budget cuts; a great first step in addressing Minnesota’s massive deficit, however, Gov. Dayton vetoed it in record time.

This measure would have extended the one-year budget reductions that the DFL majorities and Governor Pawlenty passed at the end of the 2010 session.

Many Minnesotans are in a world of hurt and raising taxes will only hurt them further. Our state needs to live within its means, and I am disappointed that in our first chance to start solving the problem was vetoed without any

consideration.

Construction Red Tape: A bill unanimously passed in the Senate Monday, and will help jobs in the residential construction and contracting industry in Minnesota. The current law requires contractors to be certified in lead specialization when remodeling pre-1978 houses. This does not allow enough time for builders and contractors to acquire a permit, resulting in a loss of business and a loss of jobs. I believe one of the best ways to create jobs in Minnesota is to get bureaucratic red tape out of the way of hardworking Minnesotans, and this bipartisan measure does just that.

Looking ahead: Governor Dayton will present his fiscal year 2012-13 budget proposal on Tuesday, February 15 and the Minnesota Management and Budget Department will issue its budget forecast on February 28. Both are important actions that will drive the debate at the Capitol and across the state until the budget is balanced. On March 1, with up-to-date numbers in hand, committee chairs will begin setting budgets for the divisions for which they are responsible.

Also next week, look for the Senate to begin hearing bills aimed at reforming the rural preserve program under “Green Acres” tax classification, and the Higher Education Committee will hear a bill that proposes to temporarily freeze tuition rates at MnSCU and University of Minnesota campuses.
