her bitten apples to her mom, and said: “Mommy, here you are. This is the sweetest one.”

No matter who you are, how experienced you are, and how knowledgeable you think you are, always delay judgment. Give others the privilege to explain themselves. What you see may not be the reality. Never conclude for others. Perception can be misleading.

If what you see is what you get, make sure that what you see is the whole picture, not just a small slice of it. And if you can’t see the forest for the trees, just imagine what you are missing.

Our preconceptions can dramatically alter the way we perceive the world.

There is a saying attributed to the prominent writer Anaïs Nin that reflects this idea: “We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.”

I think that is pure genius. Our own experiences and education can cause us to see events through a very different lens from the person sitting next to us, even though we are watching the same event.

Prime example: eyewitness testimony in criminal cases. Time and again, conflicting stories surface from

bystanders who have no reason to lie.

What they saw was simply not the same thing as the next person’s observations.

It’s a constant challenge for law enforcement, trial lawyers and judges.

Latin poet Phaedrus said: “Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.”

I have another way of saying this in my speeches: Things are not necessarily as we always perceive them to be. I often share the story of the man and his son who are in a car accident and are badly injured. The younger man needs emergency surgery. But at the hospital, the surgeon says, “I cannot operate on this person. He is my son.” But wait, wasn’t the father injured too?

Yes, but you would be amazed at how many people, in this day and age, have not figured out that the surgeon is in fact his mother. When I first started using this example some years back, almost no one made the connection.

Now it’s probably 50-50. Perceptions change, but not always as quickly as reality.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Dreams (2) The newly arrived family of four faced many unexpected challenges. Most of them were solved by a great deal of physical effort. Even the most simple basic needs were a challenge to provide.

Their new home had spaces between the logs which needed to be filled with wooden strips, moss and clay. The whole family worked on this project. Mother was especially happy after this job was completed, since insects and cold would have more difficulty entering the house. The roof needed to have some boards replaced to stop the roof from dripping each time it rained. Mother still reminded her husband daily that she wanted a window and he continually reminded her that they didn’t have a window, but that he’d get one when he went to town. Sound familiar?

There was a spring about 150 feet from the house, which was their source of clean water for drinking and cooking.

The spring didn’t produce large volumes of water, but the water was cold and tasted good. Water for washing people, clothes and bedding came from a lake, which was far enough from the house to require hitching up the team to get water on washing day. Washing day was usually on Saturday if the weather allowed. Since they had very few visitors, personal and clothes washing wasn’t a priority. Creating warm water required starting up the stove in the house, which in summer made the family spend time outdoors and in winter it sometimes was a challenge to actually get water. It took a lot of snow to create water and winter winds carried dirt with the snow making the water somewhat dirty.

Since they had moved to their home early in summer, they were able to attempt a garden. The previous

occupants of the property felt it was more profitable to trap and cut logs, rather than grow a garden. On his next trip to town, father bought a used onebottom plow, a cultivator, hay forks, a spade, groceries and mother’s window.

They were now able to drag the plow among some stumps in an area behind the house to make a garden. After spading, picking rocks and pulling out roots, there was enough soil for mother to plant vegetables. The garden project really helped them feel that they were actually creating a home.

The seeds grew. The potato crop actually looked promising. The beans, peas and beets seemed to begin to disappear as they grew. Deer tracks in the soft earth caused them to be accused of garden plant consumption. The whole family again worked together to make a rail fence about 4 foot high, which seemed to solve the deer problem, but there were still garden predators.

Careful observance showed that rabbits and woodchucks were still garden predators. There was no fencing which would prevent these small animals from entering the garden, so more wood was placed in the fence to prevent their entrance. After some predator dug a hole under the fence, they tried traps, but father had no choice other than to load up his black powder rifle and include rabbit as a frequent addition to the family meals. The rabbit meat actually tasted very good, Father explained to the family that they were actually loosing some vegetables, that he didn’t like anyway, for some really good meals of fresh meat. They were beginning to find their needs from the area in which they lived. They had heard that a woodchuck was tasty, but they never tried it.

Mother was still suggesting that her window be installed.

some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time. To avoid being the fool, keep an open mind and open eyes. Be aware of what is happening around you and be willing to change your perspective as new facts emerge. And don’t overlook the obvious. If you don’t pay attention, you will often pay a price.

One of my favorite characters in literature is Sherlock Holmes. His conclusions are based on an extremely well-developed sense of perception.

Consider this example.

Holmes and Dr. Watson decide to go on a camping trip. After dinner and a bottle of wine, they bed down for the night and go to sleep.

A while later, Holmes wakes up and notices something remarkable.

He nudges his tent mate and inquires, “Watson, tell me what you see.”

millions of stars.”

Holmes asks, “And what does that tell you?”

Watson rubs his eyes and thinks about what Holmes is asking. After a minute, he replies, “Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Holmes?”

Holmes responds, “It tells me that someone has stolen our tent!”

Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force Execute Search Warrant in Melrose

On February 8th 2019 the Central Minnesota Violent Offender Task Force, executed a search warrant at 304 3rd St. SE, Melrose, MN. During the search warrant, investigators seized approximately 3.7 pounds of methamphetamine and close to $6000.00 U.S. currency.

As a result of the search warrant, Juan Morales Alvarez 5/12/1996 from Melrose, was arrested as he was leaving the residence. Alvarez was arrested on 1st degree controlled substance charges and brought to Stearns County Jail. More arrests are expected as a result of this case.

Kathleen H. Ramler, age 90 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, February 11, 2019 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 26 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Freeport.

Kathleen Helen Ramler was born March 19, 1928 in St. Stephen, Minnesota to Michael and Loretta (Wimmer) Schimnitsch. She attended the country school in St. Stephen school district.

Kathleen was united in marriage to Roman M. Ramler on June 3, 1948 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church. Together the couple built their home in Albany where they owned and operated their farm while raising their

Kathleen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, St. Anne’s Society, and Catholic Aid Association. She enjoyed quilting, embroidering, playing cards, cooking, gardening, canning and freezing vegetables, and baking with her grandchildren. Kathleen also liked to take short trips with her family.

Survivors include her children, Sandy Drahota of Buffalo, Ron (Elaine) Ramler of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, Marlene Stangl of St. Cloud, Diane Hughes of St. Cloud, Robert (Patti) Ramler of Albany, and Lisa Ramler of Rice; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, Roman M. Ramler on February 19, 2008; and sisters, Arlie Goenner and Phyllis Giaudrone; and sons-in-law, Dave Drahota and Clyde Stangl.

Serving as casket bearers will be Dan Ramler, Brian Drahota, Mike Stangl, Huston Ramler, Jeremy Ramler, and Dan Johnson. Cross bearer will be Michelle Schroepfer and scripture bearer will be Julie Johnson. Eucharistic ministers will be Kala Beckrich and Sarah Stepan. Lector will be Ron Ramler and gift bearers will be Amy Hasher, Kim Cummings, and Jodi Drahota.

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Louis T. Wentland, age 90 of Holdingford, was held Tuesday February 12th at the Church of All Saints, St. Hedwig Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Louis died at the St. Cloud V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud on Thursday.

Louis was born August 25, 1928 in Holding Township to Ignatius and Anna (Bieniek) Wentland. He graduated from high school and entered the U.S. Army, serving from 1952 until 1954. He married Eleanor Binsfeld on June 17, 1952 in St. Stanislaus Koska Catholic Church in Bowlus. The couple farmed together for the rest of his life. Louis also drove bus for the Holdingford schools for 46 years. He was

R i c h a r d George Schmainda of St. Cloud and formerly of St. Anna passed away peacefully at the St. Cloud Hospital on Thursday, February 7, 2019.

He was 83. In his final days he was surrounded by his wife Rosie, children and grandchildren, and the caring staff at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A wake will be held at 9:30 am on Thursday, Feb 14, 2019 at Immaculate Conception Church in St. Anna, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.

The oldest child of Frank and Angeline (Studniski) Schmainda, Richard was born October 29, 1935 on the family farm in St. Anna. After graduating from Holdingford High School in 1953, Richard worked on the ore boats out of Duluth and the Great Northern Railroad. Richard proudly served

Upon returning home, he married Rosie (Scepaniak) on April 15, 1961 at St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Richard took over the family dairy farm in St. Anna where he and Rosie lived and raised three children. In 2000, they moved to St. Cloud which enabled them to travel and spend more time with family.

A humble and quiet man, Richard loved fishing and hunting, playing cards, attending sporting events, and his grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rosie (St. Cloud), children Peggy (Steve) Eigen (St. Cloud), Michael (Kathleen) Schmainda (Elm Grove, WI), grandchildren Lauren (Brandon) Blommel, Anna Eigen, Bridget Schmainda, Matthew Schmainda, brothers Frank (Linda) Schmainda (Glenwood) and James “Jim” Schmainda (Isanti).

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Elmer, and his daughter Pam (Michael) Hollsten.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Marriage

By Rachel Cruze Marriage is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make, so the last thing you want to do is go in unprepared.

Money is the number one issue couples fight about. In fact, Ramsey Solutions released a study that shows money fights are the second leading cause of divorce, behind infidelity. So, making sure you’re on the same page about your finances with your future spouse is extremely important. When you sit down and talk with your partner about your finances, it builds a different level of trust in your relationship. You’ll wind up growing closer to each other as a result.

Talking about money can be uncomfortable at first, but it’s so worth it!

Before you say “I do,” here are a few questions you should ask yourself as you get ready to have the money talk with your future spouse.

Where are you currently with your finances?

Both of you should answer this question and get it out on the table. How much debt do you have—including student loans, car loans, mortgages, credit cards and even personal loans? What’s your annual income? How much do you have in savings?

Once you both have that information, you can make a plan to attack your debt. That leads us to a very important question—do you want debt to be a part of your marriage? I hope the answer is no, but you need to have this discussion. If you’re determined to get out of debt and your spouse continues to pile up credit card debt, then you’re headed toward a lot of marital stress.

Debt is a thief. It steals your money and your joy. The last thing you want to do is delay all of those dreams you have with your future spouse. Being debt free will allow you to turn your dreams into a reality. So, make a plan to get out

grace. It will take a few months to get used to budgeting, but you’ll get there!

What are your financial fears?

This might not be a fun question, but it’s an important one. Fear can make us do crazy things, especially when it comes to your money. Fear is what leads to people hiding purchases from their spouse or getting a secret credit card. Both of which are bad ideas, by the way!

Maybe you’re afraid because you don’t have the security that comes with savings or maybe you’re scared because you’re living paycheck to paycheck, like most Americans. Whatever they are, share them with your fiancé.

Getting your fears out on the table will help you to get on the same page when it comes to your values and money.

What are your dreams?

Where do you picture yourself (and your spouse) years from now? What type of lifestyle are you living? You probably already know the answer, and

Am I a spender or a saver?

You probably know the answer to this question immediately, right? Would you rather spend your time shopping at the mall or updating your budget in Excel?

The spender and the saver are total opposites, but it’s true what they say— opposites attract. Often in marriage, one person is a spender and one is a saver.

And that’s okay! Just because one likes to spend and one of the other likes to save doesn’t mean your marriage is doomed. You balance each other out.

Do I understand how a budget works?

If you don’t know how to make a budget, stop what you’re doing and learn how to create one. I know what you may be thinking… “Budgets are the worst!” or “You can’t have fun when you’re on a budget!” Budgeting might seem restrictive but telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went actually gives you permission to spend! It’s also a great way to deepen communication with your spouse because you’re planning for your future together.

Your budget is your game plan.

With a zero-based budget, you list your monthly income at the top of the page.

Then list all your monthly expenses— gas, food, rent, debt payments and so on—below that. The income minus the outgo should equal zero. Every dollar should have a “name.” Give yourself

Swanville Senior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the January Senior High student of the month, senior Nathan Lambrecht. Nathan is the son of Mike and Julie Lambrecht.

Nathan enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. He plans to attend Saint Cloud Technical College to get a degree in land surveying and civil engineering. Nathan participates in many school activities, playing basketball since sixth grade, playing both football and baseball since 7th grade and participating in drama since 7th grade also.

Nathan stays busy outside of school by participating in his church youth group and Boy Scouts. His achievements include earning perfect attendance awards and consistently being on the A Honor Roll. Nathan’s favorite thing about school has been hanging out with friends and taking advantage of the

opportunity to take college classes, one perk of which is, not having class some days that college classes don’t meet. He advises other students to “Work hard and enjoy the little things.”

Social Studies Instructor Tom Bzdok says “Nathan is extremely deserving of this recognition. He is a very mature young man who has become a leader by setting positive examples for his classmates to follow. He always has a good attitude, an eagerness to learn, and works hard to achieve his goals.

Nathan is the type of student who will not be satisfied unless he has put his best effort into it. I’m glad Nathan received this award, he deserves it!”

Math and College Math instructor Liza Hasse adds “Nathan is very deserving of this Student of the Month recognition. Nathan works very hard to in and out of class to maintain his grades at a high level. He has developed into a silent leader who leads through example. Funding for AEDs and other equipment comes from the Lions club, the Swanville Rural Fire Association and government grants.

With 14 members serving a several-mile radius of the community, Maciej said the Swanville First Responders group always needs more volunteers.

Dear Motor Medics, I’ve got a noise under my hood that despite several attempts at repair still persists. The vehicle is a 2004 Chevy Tahoe with the 5.3 engine and upon startup it will chirp from the engine drive belts for about 15 minutes no matter what the conditions. We have tried to repair this by switching the belt which resolved it for about a week. The next thing we tried was to replace the tensioner in hopes that the belt tension was incorrect. After the tensioner replacement, it lasted another week then was back to chirping again. Have you had this problem before and if so what kind of things have you done to stop the noise? My mechanic suggests trying a Gatorback belt. What is a Gatorback belt and do you think it may help?

-Daryl in Sheldon, Iowa Dear Daryl, When we have belt squeaks we look very closely at all of the rotating parts to make certain there is not a problem with alignment or wear that could be the root cause of the noise. We also check for proper tension and make sure the pulleys all have good bearings. With that all done we install a new belt and if it squeaks again soon after we sometimes use the Gatorback belt which is different in design in that it has grooves on both sides of the belt which can help to eliminate noise by providing a better gripping surface area.

Grey Eagle City Truth in Taxation Meeting December 11, 2018 The Truth in Taxation Meeting was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 6:30 p.m. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann and Lori Hellmann.

There were no guests in attendance.

The purpose of the meeting is to allow residents the opportunity to discuss the budget and levy for 2019 with the council. It is the goal of the Council to work to keep the budget consistent from year to year, however with the cost of goods and services on the rise, the budget and levy will most likely see increases.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to adjourn the meeting at 6:50 p.m. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Lori Hellmann, Clerk Grey Eagle City December 11, 2018 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of December, 2018 in council chambers. Council members present were Thom Muellner, Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests George Minerich and Clarence Welle.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the November 13, 2018 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. Two quotes were obtained for a new lawnmower. $12,800 for a 60” Kubota from Arnold’s of St. Martin and $9,850 for a 60” John Deere from Midwest Machinery.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to purchase a 60” John Deere from Midwest Machinery for $9,850 less trade-in. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

2. Chico informed the council that the warranty on the John Deere tractor would soon be expiring.

Midwest Machinery would look it over for $95. It was the consensus of the council to have the John Deere tractor checked over.

3. The plow truck is in good shape but it doesn’t get used hard enough for the turbo to work properly.

Chico thought that it may be a good idea to sell the diesel plow truck and replace it with a gas engine truck. The council instructed Chico to do some research on what the current plow truck would sell for and what it would cost to replace it with a gas engine truck and report back to the council.

Mayor Joseph Arnzen opened the public hearing at 7:15 p.m.

George Minerich from the Minnesota Department of Health was in attendance to discuss the Wellhead Protection Plan. There is money in the plan in the form of grants for the following items: sealing wells in the protection area, sealing the old well by the Fire Hall, applying for absorbent spill kit equipment for the Fire Department, installing a fence around the water tower and plant, and pulling the old well. Grants would be for up to $10,000 per grant. The Grants would only apply for the DWSMA (Drinking Water Supply Management Area).

The City would need to pay the money up front but the State would reimburse the City for up to the $10,000. George stated that in year 8 the State Planner would help to amend the Wellhead Protection Plan.

The public hearing was closed at 7:40 p.m.

Clarence Welle was in attendance for approval for a canvas storage shed that has been placed on the west side of his shed.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the building permit for the canvas storage

shed but a diagram needs to be submitted showing how far it is placed from neighboring lot lines as the setback requirements must be met or the shed will need to be moved. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2018-20, A Resolution Re-Establishing Precinct Location. A second was made

by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The above stated resolution is as follows: Resolution No. 2018-20 A Resolution Reestablishing the Polling Precinct and Precinct Location for the City of Grey Eagle WHEREAS, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GREY EAGLE, MINNESOTA (“Council” and “City), pursuant to Minnesota Statute 204B.14, is required to establish or re-establish the boundaries of the election precincts within the municipality following the redistricting of the Legislature; and WHEREAS, the Legislature of the State of Minnesota has been redistricted; and WHEREAS, precinct boundaries must be re-established within 60 days of the time when the Legislature has been redistricted or at least 19 weeks before the State Primary, whichever comes first.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GREY EAGLE that the following precinct and polling location is hereby re-established as: Grey Eagle City Hall 202 Woodman Street South Grey Eagle, MN 56336 Adopted this 11th day of December, 2018 A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve Resolution No. 2018-21, A Resolution Accepting $10,000 Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club Donation for Park Maintenance. The Clerk discussed the need for the storage of city records. The current space is full and new options were discussed. One of the locations would be the office space in the old city hall building. Chico will contact Ken Frieler to see what it would take to turn the office space into storage.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE City Council decrees that, as a matter of policy, the City Clerk and the Mayor, when in agreement, may pay such bills as appropriate. All such payments will be presented to the City Council for review at the next regularly scheduled meeting.

Mayor Joseph Arnzen updated the council on a recent meeting with the Grey Eagle Industrial Development Corporation. The group felt that the City ordinance was outdated and should be reviewed and updated. The ordinance has been sent to the City Attorney for his review and opinion.

Grey Eagle City Emergency Meeting December 21, 2018 The emergency meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 5:00 p.m., on the 21st day of December 2018. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Bill Pohlmann, Brian Hollenkamp and Thom Muellner. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann and Lori Hellmann. There were no guests present.

The council discussed the three applicants that were interviewed for the part time/seasonal position. Mayor Joe Arnzen stated that one of the applicants turned down the position. The two remaining applicants had similar qualifications.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to offer the position to John Call at $12 per hour to start with a review in six months. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office

Crash with Injuries near Freeport: February 12, 2019: At approximately 2:19 p.m., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to a two vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of County Road 11 and County Road 30 in Oak Township.

This intersection is a few miles south of the City of Freeport.

According to Sheriff Steve Soyka, an SUV, driven by Cheryl Kae Ziemer, 55, of Freeport, was traveling northbound on County Road 11. Ziemer swerved to miss a truck pulling a gravity box. The truck, driven by Duane Lawrence Maus, age 52, of Freeport, was traveling eastbound on County Road 30 and was unable to stop for the posted stop sign. The vehicles collided in the intersection.

Ziemer was transported to the hospital

by Melrose Ambulance for non-life threatening injuries.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Freeport Fire and Rescue.

The crash remains under investigation.

Fraudulent Activity: February 13, 2019: Several Stearns County residents contacted the Sheriff’s Office in regards to suspicious mail/phone calls.

The residents reported receiving a letter in the mail from “DotService.com” regarding DOT (Department of Transportation) numbers. The letter is informing the recipient their DOT number is “PAST DUE” and they need to complete their “Biennial Update.”

The letter also indicates failure to renew may result in the DOT number deactivation and a civil penalty of $1,000 per day, not to exceed $10,000.

The Department of Motor Vehicle Services is aware of this mailing. They confirmed with the State that this letter is a scam. Residents are urged not to respond to the letter or provide personal information if contacted by phone regarding this request.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson Addressing tax issue related to farmers, small businesses

The Tax Division in the Minnesota House heard bills last week that would move Minnesota into compliance with federal law as it pertains to Section 179 expensing. Currently, business owners here can only depreciate $25,000 of a capital expense in the year it was purchased, while the federal tax code allows fast depreciation of up to $1 million per year. This becomes even more important for farmers and other business owners now that the rules for like-kind exchanges have been modified. Beginning with tax year 2018, the value of equipment “traded in” on new equipment will be considered income. So, being able to depreciate this so-called income becomes even more important.

This conformity piece was part of the tax bill passed by the Legislature in 2018, but unfortunately, it was vetoed

by Gov. Dayton. It will be nearly impossible now to enact changes in time for filing this year. It’s hoped that any changes made will be done retro-actively so those affected could file amended tax returns for 2018. Most farmers file their taxes by March 1, while others have until April 15 to file their returns.

Read with interest about a new law in California requiring all new homes constructed in the state to have solar

panels. It’s a first-in-the-nation mandate that will add around $8,000 to the already sky-high cost of building a home in the Golden State. What makes this especially newsworthy for us in Minnesota is that many of the more strict environmental and clean air requirements that we debate in our state were first tried in California. Case in point; a bill has been introduced here that would require all electric generation in Minnesota to come from renewable sources by the year 2050. California has that same goal, only their timeline is a bit more aggressive with their target being 2045 for 100 percent carbon emission-free electricity.

Several aspects of these mandates concern me. First, let the market take us there. The cost of wind generation has come down dramatically, and it now rivals the cost of traditional sources of power. Power companies are already way ahead of Minnesota’s first attempt to drive the market with our 25 percent mandate by the year 2025. Many have already surpassed that goal, and it’s the market price of electric generation that’s driving this push.

In addition, it’s not wise to rely solely on one or two sources for all your power. In our recent polar vortex, wind towers were being shut down because the extreme temperatures made lubrication of the turbine gear boxes difficult.

And I’m amazed while driving around observing the community solar gardens that have sprung up around the district.

Gary Edward Langer, age 72 of Melrose, died unexpectedly surrounded by his family on Monday, February 11, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 5 p.m.

Monday, February 18 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home in Melrose.

Gary Edward Langer was born March 12, 1946 in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the son of Gilbert and Hiltrude (Ophoven) Langer.

Gary married Diane (Stelton) on October 8, 1966 in Watkins, Minnesota. Gary and Diane resided in several suburbs of the Twin Cities after marriage, while Gary was an engineer for 3M Companies in St. Paul for eight years. Gary did not want to raise his children in the Metro area so he purchased Curly’s Bar in Melrose and renamed it Langer’s Liquor. Gary and his wife Diane owned and operated Langer’s Liquor together for eight years before selling the establishment. At this time another opportunity came up to buy Midwest Screen Print in Melrose. Together, Gary and Diane provided customers with screen printed, embroidered and tackle twill apparel for more than 24 years.

Gary was an avid sports enthusiast and athlete. He loved watching his children in all their activities and stayed active himself with softball and golf. Gary will be greatly missed as a husband, father, brother, and friend. Gary was a realist and most recently he said, “I have no regrets, I’ve had a good

However, is it okay to finance things like furniture at zero percent interest?

-Detrick Dear Detrick, We just finished an extensive study of more than 10,000 millionaires. Not a single one of these folks said they became rich by borrowing money to buy things at zero percent interest. Since none of those millionaires gave credit for their wealth to zero percent interest financing, and since we know banks charge interest on loans, how is it you think these people are loaning money at “zero percent interest?”

Is it possible the pricing of the item has the interest rate built into it? I think the chances of that are pretty high. If not that, companies offering this kind of financing have very accurate and highly researched data that tells them the vast majority of people who take out zero-percent loans don’t pay off the loans in the specified period of time. Do you know what happens if you don’t live up to the terms of those contracts?

It becomes a regular loan, and they back charge you for the interest.

So, on average you’re paying for it all. I don’t know why you’d want to play with snakes, Detrick. Snakes bite, and some of them can kill you. Avoid

Back in the day, many people were paid in cash at their jobs. Then, they would take the money home and divide it up into different envelopes.

The envelopes held cash for different categories in their budgets—food, clothes, rent, and other bills and such.

When a particular envelope was empty they stopped buying that item, because the money budgeted for that category was gone. If you wanted a dress, but the clothing envelope was empty, you didn’t buy a dress that month.

It’s just a simple cash system that, combined with doing a written monthly budget, will help keep you from overspending!

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz At Your Word – Luke 5:1-11 Simon Peter was a fisherman caught up in the nets of God’s mysterious working on this earth. For Simon Peter, the son of God, the messiah had come preaching and teaching to his lake. All night these fishermen had labored to catch fish and come up empty.

As they were cleaning their nets Jesus wanted to use their boat to help him get away from the crowds a little bit. Since it was his boat, Simon Peter had the privilege of operating it for Jesus.

As you read this passage you might notice that the subject matter of Jesus’ teaching is not mentioned. The passage is focused on the catch of fish and Jesus’ call to them to be fishers of men.

The task of fishing for men can be very much like fishing for fish. One can apply all the knowledge, all the expertise, all the experience they have to fishing but without divine favor they can still come up empty handed. As Christians work to share God’s truth with those around us we too will come up empty handed unless it is God’s will to change hearts and minds.

A hardcore fisherman will just keep fishing until they find the fish. Simon Peter and his crew fished all night and caught nothing. There is nothing wrong with learning more or trying new techniques but if we are relying on our own abilities to bring people to God’s truth we could be missing the catch God has ready for us. Like Simon and his crew we can fish day and night and catch nothing. We can try a new spot, new bait, better nets, the latest evangelism techniques, flashy technology, or other methods that work elsewhere but if God doesn’t want us catching fish the nets will come back empty.

What we can do is listen and wait.

Wait for the Lord to show us where to cast our nets, for the lake is vast and our reach is limited, we are but a few and our arms tired. Like Peter we can get our complaint in, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!” and then with faith throw our concern out the window with that most powerful “but”. But, at your word I will let, we will let down our nets. It is possible for churches to cast their nets willy nilly and still catch people. Churches try their proven spots, they ask around, troll new waters, they experiment and yet the catch is in God’s hands.

Like Peter who sits in the boat with Jesus, we clearly hear the forgiveness of sins Jesus earns for us. Forgiveness he gives to us through his Word, in his body and blood. We hear his promise through the waters of Baptism. The word of truth wraps around us like a life jacket, we learn to swim the scriptures, we clean the nets, we service the boat and for that we get a seat at the feet of Jesus. At your word O Lord we are ready. Tell us where to cast our nets.

Tell us where to put in our fishing lines and we’ll try not to be too surprised when they come up full. At Your Word we will be your fishers of men for you are Lord and Savior of all and we are but sinners. Humble servants you call to be fishers of men. Amen.
