What is your next marathon? -By Harvey Mackay

One of the best decisions I’ve ever made in both my business and personal life was to start running. I remember this like it was yesterday.

I was attending a Graduate School of Business Executive Program at Stanford University back in the 1960s. Several foreign businesspeople who were also attending went out for a run every day. They asked me if I would like to join them, and I thought it sounded like fun. And from that simple invitation grew a habit that has lasted a lifetime.

Running not only has kept me in good shape, but it has sharpened my focus. The benefits of physical activity on both the body and mind are well documented. My personal experience tells me that when I don’t run - or walk briskly, as I have been more likely to do in recent years - I lose some momentum.

Running clears the cobwebs and renews energy. So I continue, even when I think it might be okay to skip a few days.

Two hip replacement surgeries sidelined me for the past few years. But I just can’t give it up. With my doctor’s blessing, I entered and completed the

Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in Phoenix on Jan. 20. I didn’t set any records, but that’s not what matters.

I finished, just like I did in 10 previous full marathons, including the 100th running of the Boston Marathon.

I saw a remarkable range of participants in the half marathon. There was one guy who carried the American flag for all 13 miles. I saw a blind woman tethered to a guide runner, who served as her eyes and described the scenery and painted the picture. There were people who pushed baby strollers for the distance. Runners dedicated their races to the memory of loved ones and causes. The motivations are endless.

Anyone who finishes a marathon or a half marathon - has won. The proof is that in earlier days, people would ask you what your time was. Now, the question is, Did you finish?

For most runners, the key to running a marathon is to understand that it is not so much a physical as a mental challenge. Your body does not want you to run a marathon. Your mind must make you do it. Therefore, you have to develop a rationale so powerful, a determination so strong that it will enable your

mind to overcome the vigorous protests of your body.

Marathon legend Grete Waitz, winner of nine New York Marathons and two London Marathons, plus five world cross-country championships, lived by the motto, “If you give up you lose.”

The race that Waitz is best remembered for was the New York Marathon in 1992. Her time: 5:32:34. That’s right, over five hours. She ran hand-in-hand with the event founder, Fred Lebow, who was fighting brain cancer. Grete’s quote after the race went something like: “The true heroes are not us up in the front, but those that are there at the back of the pack because they are there for 4-5 hours.”

Obituaries Elizabeth “Beth” Gerads Requiem Mass for Elizabeth “Beth” Gerads, age 19 of Albany, was held Monday, February 11, at St. Robert Ballarmine Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Burial followed in the St. Francis Cemetery.

Elizabeth died at the St. Francis Hospital in Topeka Kansas of complications from influenza.

Beth was born March 13, 1993 in Krain

Township to Peter and Becky (Maciejewski) Gerads. She graduated from Immaculate Heart Homeschool and was a freshman at St. Mary’s College in St. Marys, KS. She was a member of St. Robert Ballermine Catholic Church in St. Cloud and the Assumption Chapel in St. Marys.

Beth is survived by her parents, Peter and Becky Gerads, Albany; brothers and sisters, Lawrence, KS, Therese, Clare, AnneMarie, Damien, Bridget, Benedict, MaryKatherine, Philomena, Grace and Christine, all of MN. She is also survived by her grandparents, Lois Maciejewski and Greg and Dorothea Gerads.

Genevieve M. “Genny” Marty Genevieve M. “Genny” Marty, age 84 of Burtrum, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 7, 2013 surrounded by her family at the Long Prairie Memorial Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 11 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Genevieve Margaret Waldvogel was born December 9, 1928 in Burnhamville Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Peter, Sr. and Frieda (Nagler) Waldvogel. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Genevieve graduated from Grey Eagle High School in May of 1946. She was united in marriage to Walter Marty on June 13, 1946. The couple lived a short time in Burtrum and then moved to Nashwauk, Minnesota. They returned back to Grey Eagle in 1962.

Genevieve was a homemaker and devoted mother. She helped her husband

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Ruth Ann (Raymond) Bense of Burtrum and Ronald Marty of Maynard; grandchildren, Christopher (Teri) Bense of Burtrum, Teriana Bense of Burtrum, Amber Bense of Burtrum, Jefferey (Darla) Marty of Montevideo, and Brent (Jen) Marty of Ghent; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Sierra, Wesley, Kaden, Tegan, Gavin, Dayna, Vance and Blake; and brother, Arnold Waldvogel of Arizona.

Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Marty in 1991; parents; brothers, Peter Waldvogel, Jr. and Edmund Waldvogel; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Marty.

Serving as casket bearers were Christopher Bense, Jeff Marty, Brent Marty, Teriana Bense, Gene Waldvogel, and Lonnie Waldvogel. Cross bearer was Amber Bense and scripture bearer was Kaden Marty.

Honorary bearers were the Christian Mothers.

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Edmund Joseph Schneider, age 79 of Holdingford was held at 11 AM Tuesday, February 12th at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel.

Father Gregory Mastey officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Edmund died unexpectedly in his home Thursday morning.

Eddie was born on May 9th, 1933 in Pearl Lake to Hubert and Rose (Schaefer) Schneider. He grew up on a farm near Waite Park. He married Delores Kostreba on September 21st, 1979 in St. Wendel. After marriage the couple moved to Little Falls

Roger H. Butkowski

Roger H. Butkowski, age 85 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 15 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in St. Rosa.

Roger Herman Butkowski was born January 3, 1928 in St. Rosa, Minnesota to Ignatius and Anna (Korte) Butkowski. On June 20, 1953 he married Beverly Pangburn at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Roger resided in St. Paul for 15 years before purchasing a farm in St. Rosa in 1960, where he farmed until his retirement in 2008. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Roger enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and woodcarving and loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife Delores Schneider, Holdingford; his children Billy (Rachel) Schneider, Albany; Brenda (John) Kocher, Australia; Kristina Schneider, Nashville, TN; his 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and his siblings Harold (MaryLou) Schneider, Waite Park; David (Pat) Schneider, Holdingford; Sally Schill, St. Cloud; Luverne Hommerding, St. Cloud.

He is preceded in death by his parents Hubert and Rose Schneider and his siblings Agnes Libsmeier, Percy Rosha, Leona Donabauer, and Victor Schneider.

Ray Loven

Ray Loven, 95 of Swanville, passed away Sunday, February 10, 2013. Services will be held at 10:30 am, February 14, 2013 at the Swanville Bible Church.

Burial will follow the service at the Springbrook Cemetery, Swanville.

Ray was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 22, 1917 to John and Ellen (Salley) Loven. The family moved to Swanville when Ray was a young boy. Ray attended school at Rural School District 79 through the 8th grade, then 1 year at Upsala High School. In 1933 while living in St. Paul, he learned the trade of mechanics and welding at Dunwoody Institute. Because he failed a military physical due to a childhood illness, Ray felt that he could best serve his country by welding on battleships being built in the Seattle Washington Shipyards, so he relocated to Seattle in 1941. While in Seattle, Ray summoned and found work and housing for approximately 30 of his relatives and friends from Minnesota. On May 2, 1942 Ray married Delila (Dee) Johnson.

Dee was “the love of his life”. Royal was born in 1945 while in Seattle. In 1946, Ray, Dee and Royal returned to Minnesota where along with his brothers, started “Loven Brothers”, a gas station, auto and body repair shop. In 1947, they celebrated the birth of Amber and together raised their family in Swanville. In 1952, Ray purchased the brothers shares and renamed the company “Loven’s Service”. Ray owned and operated the business until 1983 when he sold it to his son, Royal. Ray and Dee together enjoyed

69 years of marriage during which they loved to travel, eat out, dance and enjoyed spending time with their family. Ray loved the town of Swanville, and served on the Swanville Village Council, was a fireman, was a member of the Sportsman’s Club, and the SnoDrifter’s Club, but the thing that brought him much pride was the Lion’s Club. He was a charter member of this successful group where he was highly honored for his years of service and perfect attendance. Two years ago he was honored at the Swanville Carnival by naming the day as “Ray Loven Day” and again last year had the park building named in his honor.

Gramps loved his family. He loved tradition and often spent hours teaching his kids and grandchildren about life. He was a great story teller and often had a moral to the stories he told. He loved to take his grandkids to The Sunwood Inn, deer hunting with handmade bows and arrows, and canoe/camping trips where it “never rained on the river.” He was the eternal optimist and found the best in all people he was around. He loved life and often described himself as the “happiest man on earth.”

Left to mourn Ray’s loss is his son, Royal Loven; daughter, Amber Brown; grandchildren, Kyle (Kari) Loven, Jay (Heidi) Loven, Michelle (Doug) Dahlberg, Stephanie (Rob) Fritz and Matthew (Anne) Brown; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, friends and Lions Club Members.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Delila; daughter-in-law, Sandee Loven; son-in-law, Charles Brown; siblings, June Boerger, John Loven, Ed Loven, Earl Loven and Harold Loven.

Pallbearers will be Kyle Loven, Jay Loven, Matthew Brown, Doug Dahlberg, Rob Fritz and Jim Loven.

Charles J. “Chuck” Nathe, age 58 of New Munich, died peacefully surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at his home in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 14 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Military Honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Charles Joseph Nathe was born September 11, 1954 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Leo and Dorothy (Younkin) Nathe. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1972 and served in the U.S. Army from 1973 through 1977. On May 27, 1978 he married Barbara Essler at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Chuck worked at Landy Packing Company from 1977 through 1985 and then began working as a truck driver at Jennie-O Foods for 28 years. Chuck lived in Melrose from 1978 through 1989 until moving into his home in New Munich.

Theodore “Ted” M. Solarz The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Theodore “Ted” M. Solarz, age 81 of Holdingford, will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 16th at All SaintsSt. Hedwig’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

Theodore passed away Tuesday at Country Manor in Sartell. Friends may call from 4-8 PM on Friday, February 15th at St. Hedwig’s and again from 10 AM until the time of the service once again at the church on Saturday. Parish prayers will take place at 6 PM Friday evening at the church.

Ted was born April 27th, 1931 in Holdingford to Zachary and Mary Rose (Kostreba) Solarz. He married Rita Kroll March 1st 1954 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in St. Wendel. He spent most of his life in Holdingford. He was a lifelong member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church where he was an usher for 40 years. He

Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month The Upsala School staff is proud to honor Lane Soltis as Upsala School’s January Junior High Student of the Month. Lane is the eighth grade son of Jeremy and Sherry Soltis.

Lane is an active member of his school sports community. He is a valuable member of the junior high basketball, baseball, and football teams. He has also made the A and B honor roll since being in Junior High. His favorite high school class is science because it is about the environment and he likes being outdoors.

Outside of school, Lane enjoys hunting, fishing, listening to music, playing basketball with his brothers, hanging out

with friends and family and having fires in the summer. His future plans include going to college and getting a house in the country with great hunting land near a lake.

Matt Capelle, Lane’s basketball coach says that Lane is a natural leader who is motivated and has the ability to accept constructive criticism in a positive manner. When asked his advice for classmates, Lane chose to pass on advice given to him by his dad and uncle, saying, “If you want to be good at something and people doubt you, don’t listen.

Work hard, put in the time and great things will happen to prove everyone wrong,” and “Practice makes perfect, but perfect practice makes excellence!”

MaKenna is an active member of her school community. Albany man arrested after Upsala area break-in

A suspect is accused of carrying a machete to enter a Elmdale Township residence Tuesday, after kicking in the front door.

At about 6 p.m., the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a burglary in progress with gunshots possibly being fired. After responding, officials learned one or more suspects had fled the scene. They later determined that no gun shots were fired. The suspect entered the home while carrying the machete.

Corey Pirttila, 23, of Albany, was found in an Albany home and arrested. He was taken to the Morrison County Jail and is being held pending possible charges.

The last place finisher was Bob Wieland, a Viet Nam veteran, who ran it in four days and two hours. He had no legs and ran on his hands. When I saw him early in the race, I knew there was no way I could not finish. True hero?

You bet.

“You should run your first marathon for the right reasons, because you’ll never be the same person again,” said Bill Wenmark, my friend and marathon coach. “You must want to do it, not do it because your boss did it or your spouse did it.”

Bill has trained 3,800 first time students and only three have not finished the marathon. Bill, a diehard Marine, has run 103 marathons and is a worldclass mountain biker at age 65.

The vast majority of people who sign up to run a marathon are not competing for prize money. They are in it to prove to themselves that they can do it.

That thinking carries over into so many other parts of our lives.

To me, marathons are a metaphor for life. There are challenges, obstacles, rallies, accomplishments, and celebra-

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Governor’s speech draws attention Governor Mark Dayton delivered his annual “State of the State” message to a joint session of the Minnesota Legislature last week. He promoted his tax system overhaul, but didn’t mention the most controversial part of it, the sales tax revision. His plan to broaden the base of taxable items, while at the same time lowering the tax rate has drawn considerable comment, most of which has been negative. The other major aspect of his plan, the addition of a fourth tier tax rate for high income-earners in Minnesota, hasn’t received the same attention as the sales tax revision.

Gov. Dayton talked about the strides Minnesota has made during the first two years he’s been in office, such as job creation and a lower unemployment rate than the rest of the nation. Later, he criticized past administrations and legislatures for “failed practices that didn’t work.” That was a bit frustrating because the Legislature, at least in the past two years - the same two years Dayton has been in office - has done a credible

job of controlling the increase in state spending. As a result, in that same twoyear timeframe, the state’s projected deficit has decreased substantially, while its reserve accounts have been fully replenished and a big share of the education shift has been re-paid.

A major budget forecast will be released at the end of this month, after which the governor can make revisions to his budget plan and the Legislature will begin in earnest the procedure to come up with its own spending plan.

I’ve received several inquiries from livestock producers and electrical contractors concerning new federal emission regulations that go into effect in May for various engines. There seems to be general confusion on just how these new standards, known as the RICE Rules, are to be met. Of particular concern are the requirements for diesel engines used to power stand-by generators.

One contractor told me that after the rules were finalized by the EPA last month, he was sent 230 pages of information. It appears that farmers must decide by Feb. 22 whether to opt in or stay out of the process. The problem with not going along with the new rules is that it

Today is Valentine’s Day - or, as men like to call it, Extortion Day! -Jay Leno

would disqualify a farmer from receiving a lower electric rate in return for the power company being able to shut off his regular electric service during peak demand periods. According to a power company official I visited with, they budget about 80 hours per year that they shut off a livestock producer’s electricity. During those shutdowns, electricity would be provided by a back-up generator, usually powered by a diesel engine.

Those 80 hours are above the 50-hour limit at which these new rules take effect.

It would appear the rules are aimed at mandating the use of higher quality diesel fuel and the new Tier 4 engines, both of which are admirable goals that will lower emissions. However, according to one generator manufacturer, the new engines won’t be available until the year 2015. As a result, the deadlines of Feb. 22 to inform the power company and May 3 to comply with these new EPA rules are problematic.

The parents of a small child were killed in an automobile accident. She had no other family members who could care for her, so she was taken to the home of another family where she would live.

The Bible tells us that “you can pray for anything and if you believe, it would be done for you by your Father in heaven.” Effective Christian living depends on our faith in Christ. We are saved by faith, we are to live by faith and we are to pray in faith believing that with God, all things are possible. It is important that we constantly remind ourselves that “without faith it is impossible to please Him” and that our prayers are the keys that unlock all the treasures of heaven.

Love and Hate -By Sheila Ripplinger It has been said that there is a fine line between love and hate. Although it may seem like an oxymoron, there may actually be a lot of truth in this statement.

We would all agree that God is Love: 1 John 4:16. But do we know that God is also a God that hates? There are many places in Scripture that make it very clear about the things that He hates or ‘abhors’. Proverbs 6:16-19 gives a list of six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to Him. The top of the list? Haughtiness/ pride. In Galatians 5:19&20 we find another lengthy list of sins that God hates such as jealousy, sexual immorality, drunkenness, and selfish ambition to name a few on that list.

Does this mean that God hates us when we do these detestable things?

Absolutely not! He still loves us- but He hates the sin because it destroys us!

Our sins are detestable to Him! God sent His one and only Son to save us because of His great love for us- while we were still sinners! He did not say, “Quit sinning and then I will love you and save you.” He sent us Jesus as a free gift of His Grace to pay a debt that we owed and could not pay. We did not, nor can not do anything to earn that grace.

If we claim to be followers of Jesus, saved by His Grace, then our responsibility is to pass on what He gave to us- grace! We dare not be lofty people sitting amongst the ‘holier than thou’

crowd thinking that we somehow have a right to judge or condemn a fellow sinner! We should be hating the sin because God hates it- but we are not to hate the sinner.

The world has a twisted view that tries to teach us to love the sin and the sinner; to just accept it- Not Biblical!

Hating the sin that God hates is not being judgmental as critics want the world to believe. They only want to hear about the ‘love’. But that is not what the God of the Bible teaches. Hating the sinner because of the sin is where we go wrong, and anyone guilty of that will be judged by the True Judge one day.

Sometimes professing Christians can be good at putting in order which sins they think are worse than others, putting gossip and slander at the bottom.

But the truth is that God’s Word puts pride at the top spot, which appears to be the sin that leads to most of the others.

God offers us undeserved Grace.

His Son shed His pure and holy blood to cover over our sins against a Holy God. One day- maybe very soon- Jesus will return. It will not be as it was or as it is now; it will be to take His faithful followers with Him to Heaven. It will instantly, in a blink of an eye, turn from Grace to Judgement for those who did not let Him pay their sin debt. It will be too late to change your mind.

Romans 12:9~ ‘Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.’

Explore ice fishing with a youth, without a license this weekend Minnesotans who would like to introduce a child to ice fishing can do so without a fishing license from Saturday, Feb. 16, to Monday, Feb. 18, during Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Weekend, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Minnesota residents age 16 and older can fish without a license provided they are helping a youth younger than 16.

icefishing makes it easy for beginners to get out on the ice and enjoy one of Minnesota’s wintertime activities.

“It takes little equipment and even less expertise,” said Mike Kurre, the DNR’s mentoring program coordinator.

“Just do a little planning and don’t be afraid to ask a nearby angler to drill a hole or two. Most will be glad to help.”

Ice never is completely safe, even in mid-winter. Check with a local bait shop or people familiar with ice conditions before heading out on the lake.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township February 4, 2013 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited. Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe & Bev Eggerth.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ron asked to add the Mound Lake Access to the agenda.

Ray made the motion to accept the agenda as amended. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the January 7, 2013 minutes to the board.

Zoning Report: Bev stated that she had replaced some pages regarding home based business to match the county. Jesse H. was present to see if the property he is planning on purchasing is buildable. The board felt if it was a true government 40 and he obtained the necessary easement the property would be buildable. Bev had a call about another parcel, which had been a home site and had adequate road frontage; however, there was no house on the property now. The board felt that it would also be a buildable parcel.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for January. Claims list included 7 claims for a total of $9,744.12. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. The Equalization meeting has been set for April 24, 2013 at 9:00 am. Discussion on whether to raise the life insurance coverage, decided to leave it as is.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of December 31, 2012: $209,385.15; Checks cleared: 12, $8,700.18; Deposits including interest: $5,540.51; Balance as of January 31, 2013: $206,225.48; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $206,225.48; CD Balance: $102,432.69. Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Second by Mike. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that with the snow and ice, there had been a lot of sanding done. Thank you card was received from Upsala school bus driver.

Dave K. was on hand to present his information on brush cutting and tree trimming. Jake B. also presented his interest in doing road blading and snow plowing for the township.

He would also be able to do some road work, as well as mowing. Ron reported that he had received a call from the DNR concerning a survey they are planning on doing at the Mound Lake access. They would then like to meet with the township

sometime this summer.

Additional agenda items: Two requests for donations were presented and denied.

An Indoor Fishing Contest

How do you hold a fishing contest indoors? You will need to come and see for yourself.

The Lions of Holdingford created a unique fund raising activity - an “indoor fishing contest”. The “fish” are drawn randomly from buckets. Just like an outdoor fishing contest, the “fish” and the fisher-person’s name are placed on a leader board. At the end of the contest the largest “fish” are awarded prizes.

The Holdingford Lions will hold their Ninth Annual Indoor Fishing Contest on February 24th at the Pelican Lake Ballroom. The tickets must be bought before 1:00 and prizes will be awarded starting at 3:00. Gambling prizes are awarded only to people 18 or older.

This year the Lions have purchased or received donations of prizes totaling over $10,000. They range from $500 for the largest fish to $25 gift cards for smaller fish. Ninety prizes will be awarded for the largest “fish caught”, seventy-five prizes for the largest fish of any kind and 5 prizes each for the largest sunfish, crappie or bass. There will also be on-site raffles and kids activities too.

The Pelican Lake Ballroom will have food and beverages for sale.

DNR Question of the Week

By Greg Spoden, State Climatologist Q: What is the current drought situation in Minnesota and will winter snows have an impact on the drought?

A: Currently, the U.S. Drought Monitor Map places more than 80 percent of Minnesota in the “severe drought” or “extreme drought” categories. The drought situation will remain unchanged until spring because the deeply frozen soil assures that very little winter precipitation will make it into the ground.

As of late autumn, the soil moisture content in the plant rooting zone was near all-time low levels at many locations.

Without abundant spring rains, a number of critical drought issues involving agriculture, forestry, horticulture, tourism and public water supply will begin to emerge.

This Week In the FFA, I will talk a bit about some of the inner workings of the Organization. FFA made a significant change in 1988 at the National Convention in Kansas City Missouri. Up to this time, FFA were three letters that stood for the words: Future Farmers of America.

(Or as I have been told by a few parents jokingly : Father Farms Alone).

I was at the convention in 1988 and at the time I did not understand why we made the change. The National FFA Organization changed to follow the national shift of less farm students, and more rural non farm and urban students who were interested in the organization, but did not want to be called farmers. That lead to the dilemma of changing the acronym, FFA into something else. They watched other youth organizations make the change and loose some focus on their ideals and the FFA did not want to follow the same path.

So FFA is now a historical part of the National FFA Organization.

The FFA Mission: “FFA makes a posi-

tive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.”

Each of us has opportunities everyday to choose to be a leader. Your actions can provide a positive influence to others in your family, school and community. Your involvement in FFA will present many opportunities to learn how to handle leadership roles and make decisions that will gain a large amount of experience that students and parents will use in their careers and life.

Personal Growth is the positive evolution of the whole person, and if you want to experience this, you must take a close look at yourself and identify the things you’d like to continue to build and grow. FFA helps this along through Leadership opportunities, Career Development Events, and Chapter activities. Career success happens by demonstrating these qualities, attributes and skills in FFA, and by doing so helping you prepare for a chosen

Upsala Library A two-session Computer Basics program: Wednesdays, Feb. 20 and 27, from 6:30- 7:30 p.m. both days. People of all ages may take this introduction to computers class. The first session will include basic information on how to turn on a computer, how to use a mouse, and how to launch programs. The second session will build on the skills learned in the first. Both sessions will be led by Marisa George, technology library assistant at Upsala Area Schools. The class size limit is 12 and preregistration is required.

Albany Library Design Your Own Bracelet: Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 6-8 p.m. for adults and teens. Learn basic jewelry techniques and construct a charm bracelet of your own design. The program will be presented by creative artist Jen Anfinson. All jewelry items will be included, but bring along any keepsakes, or old jewelry parts you’d like to incorporate. The attendance limit is 12 and preregistration is required.

Swanville Library Author and Poet Laura Purdie Salas: Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. giving presentations to children in kindergarten-sixth grade at the Swanville School. Purdie taught for two years before committing herself to a writing career. She has published numerous nonfiction books, including books on reptiles, mammals, amphibians, planets, and the senses, as well as a series of alphabet books. She has also published poetry collections. She will give a one-hour presentation for grades 1-3 and for grades 4-6, and do a storytime for the kindergarten class. Her presentation is sponsored by the Swanville Public Library.

Our state has over 8560 members within 192 local FFA chapters, with 210 FFA Advisors helping make FFA the learning experience it is today. Our state is separated into 8 Regions, each containing from 22 to 32 chapters. Within each region, all chapters compete in more than 30 career development events, from Job interview, Ag Mechanics, Prepared public speaking, to Fish and wildlife competition. Each contest contains different skills

students will need to pursue a career in that area.

The FFA State convention is where the qualifying teams from each region compete to determine who goes on to compete at the national FFA Convention.

Unlike Minnesota sports programs, teams of five individuals compete with schools of all sizes for top honors.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.
