my employees. Resourceful people can figure things out on their own. They find a way to make things work. They find solutions to problems using imaginative methods.

They are able to use resources at their disposal to help them solve problems or overcome obstacles.

Resourcefulness seems to come naturally to some people. They aren’t about to give up just because the odds are stacked heavily against them, even when it doesn’t involve ticking time bombs.

Consider what happened during the construction of the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge that spans the river tying Manhattan Island to Brooklyn. In 1863, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea for this spectacular bridge. But bridge-building experts throughout the world told him to forget it. They said it could not be done.

Roebling convinced his son, Washington, also an engineer, that the bridge could be built. The two of them developed the concepts of how it could

be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. Remember, this occurred more than 150 years ago, without benefit of modern technology.

The project was only a few months into construction when a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling.

Washington was left with permanent brain damage, unable to talk or walk.

Everyone assumed that the project would have to be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built.

Obituaries Evelyn M. Kraska

Evelyn M. Kraska, 86 year old resident of Swanville, MN, passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the Long Prairie Nursing Home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, MN with Father Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery in Flensburg, MN. Evelyn was born March 23, 1928, at home in Morrison County, to the late Ida Mae and Frank Lincoln Hanson. She graduated from Swanville High School in 1946. After high school she moved to the cities and worked as a housekeeper and nanny. She then worked for several years at Honeywell and Munsingwear. She would hop on the train and street cars to get to work and go shopping. Her fondest memory of that time was running around the cities with her best friend, Marjorie. She was united in marriage to William “Willie” Victor Kraska on August 2, 1953 at Scared Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg. They made their home on the family farm in Culdrum Township. Early in their marriage they enjoyed ice fishing together and they also spent a good deal of time at the Pillsbury Ballroom dancing the night away. Always Willie’s right hand woman, she farmed along side him and, for

many years, she ran the farm by herself and raised the children while Willie worked off the farm. She was a very detailed person and took care of the farm bookkeeping. She volunteered at 4-H when her children were young, belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary, and volunteered at the Auxiliary food booth at the Swanville Carnival. After Willie’s death in 1978, she sold the farm to her son and moved ¼ mile up the road. She continued to help with the farm for the next 25 years and especially enjoyed driving the tractor for her son. Her passion for the land was evident even after moving off of the farm, as she never allowed any weeds to grow on her well manicured lawn. She had a “hate/love” relationship with her lawnmower. She would get so mad when it didn’t mow each blade of grass the same height. All through the years, her main priorities were her husband and family. She made many sacrifices to keep the family farm going and to spend as much time as possible with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ida Mae and Frank, husband William “Willie”, and brothers Roy, Frank, Walter, Earl, Howard, Glen; and sisters Violet Steffen and Grace “Rose” Sadlovsky.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, Suzette (John) Dulas of Verndale, Karen (Jeff) Berner of Andover, Frank (Lori) Kraska of Swanville, and Lynn (Jim) Barthel of Swanville; 13 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren.

Casketbearers were her nephews, Dale Hanson, Larry Hanson; and grandsons, Josh Kraska, Daniel Barthel, Keith Kraska, and Steve Johannes.

Paul A. Nathe, age 51 of St. Cloud, formerly of Sauk Centre, died Monday, February 9, 2015, at Opportunity Matters in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, February 12 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Jeremy Theis will officiate with interment following in Calvary Cemetery.

Friends may call 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Paul Arnold Nathe was born August 8, 1963 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Arnold and Agnes (Schmidt) Nathe. On this special day Agnes drove herself to the hospital and later called to let the family know. Arnold was busy with the combine harvesting grain.

One of the kids ran out to let him know his 13th child had arrived. Arnold loaded some grain in the family pick-up and drove into town to meet Paul. They were a little surprised when they saw him because they didn’t know how special the boy would be.

Paul was born with Down Syndrome. Paul came home a few days later to meet the rest of the siblings. He was #13 in the Nathe family and received with wonder and joy.

Paul was baptized in the Catholic faith at Our Lady of the Angels church in Sauk Centre where Arnold and Agnes were faithful members until their death.

It seems Paul had a very special love with his mother. They really worked well together when on the farm. Paul had a special dog named Duke and I’m sure plenty of kittens. He loved the farm and hated to leave when mom and dad retired and moved to town.

Memories of Paul sitting in the seat of a tractor with an ice cream bucket on his head and driving that tractor like a farmer, farming like the rest of the Nathe boys, will be forever etched in our minds.

Paul moved to St. Cloud in August of 1983 where he met a new family which became a very large extension to his already large and still growing Nathe family. Paul joined the Opportunity Training Company (OTC) which provided a group home and

additional training in his life journey.

In 1994 the OTC group was dissolved and Jim Christenson a Visionary from OTC decided he wanted to lead the charge to provide Opportunities for people with all kinds disabilities. Jim always said “No disabilities only Opportunities.” Jim led the charge to find renewed funding, a new board, and Opportunity Manor, Inc., was born. Some 50 plus people were able to keep their home and accept every opportunity just like you and me. Paul’s new families built 17 new homes, a new State of the Art office and facility which continues to provide numerous Opportunity for many people in the Tri county area of Stearns, Sherburne and Benton counties.

OMI was re-branded in 2012 as Opportunity Matters Inc., to represent all things that matter to people desiring a good home and family and face daily challenges of life.

Paul is survived by his brothers and sisters, Dorothy (Kenneth) Klaphake of rural Freeport, Joyce (John) Rutherford of St. Cloud, Richard (Jean) Nathe of St. Louis Park, Tom (Jean) Nathe of Sauk Centre, Michael (Maria) Nathe of Winsted, Geraldyn Dirkes of Albany, Mary (Dennis) Rieland of St. Augusta, Mark (Sue) Nathe of Wadena, John (Marilyn) Nathe of rural West Union, Ronald Nathe of Sauk Centre, and Laura Muehlenhardt of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Betty Nathe of Little Sauk; and countless loving nieces, nephews and families.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Agnes Nathe; oldest brother, Kenneth Nathe; grandparents, Regina and Henry Schmidt and Gerhardt and Anna Nathe; and nephew, Greg Dirkes.

Serving as casket bearers will be Richard Nathe, Tom Nathe, Mike Nathe, John Nathe, Ron Nathe, and Mark Nathe. Cross bearer will be Geri Dirkes and scripture bearer will be Dorothy Klaphake. Serving as honorary bearer will be Tina Metcalfe.

To say “I Love You” -By Sheila Ripplinger One of my sweetest memories from my childhood is wrapped around Valentine’s Day. Each year, my dad would bring home a beautiful heart-shaped box of chocolates for my mom. After he gave my mom her gift, he would then give each of us kids our very own smaller heart-shaped box of chocolates.

It may seem like a small gesture, but to us kids it shouted ‘I love you!’

My dad was away from home quite often because of his job, but he would call home every day, even if it was simply to say, ‘I love you.’ One year, my dad gave my mom a music box that played the tune of the 1960’s Stevie Wonder song, ‘I just called to say ‘I love you.’ The music no longer plays, but the song forever remains in our hearts. We played the song during the end of the memorial service for my dad because it seemed to fitting!

As the years go by, I am appreciating and understanding more and more the depth of what love truly is. The world’s view on love is so different and distorted from what God’s meaning of love is. If we are not careful, we can end up extremely confused. The world is fueled by the enemy of love.

The Bible says, ‘God is Love’.~ 1 John 4:16. Our love for God is to obey His

commands, overcome the world, and believe that Jesus is the Son of God. ~1 John 5:4 & 5.

As God’s people, love must be sincere, and we are to hate what is evil; while clinging to what is good. Sometimes this can be challenging because the secular world falsely thinks that God’s love means to be accepting of everything. That is a lie from the evil one.

God has shown us His love and His justice through His Word, the Holy Bible. He has clearly written what He loves and what He hates and will not tolerate.

1 John 3:16 says, ‘This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.’ Every day that we wake up to a new sunrise is another gift from our Heavenly Father saying, ‘I woke you up to say ‘I love you!’ We should be filled with gratitude for each new day and let it flow over to the people around us that God has given us to love!

May we not let a day go by without showing and saying, ‘I love you!’

Harvey Mackay continued from page 2 sharp as ever, and he was determined to complete the bridge. As he lay in his bed, he developed a code for communication.

All he could move was one finger, so he touched the arm of his wife with that finger, tapping out the code for her to instruct the engineers who were building the bridge. For thirteen years, Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger – until the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge was finally completed.

It still stands today, carrying more than 150,000 cars and pedestrians every day.

Resourceful people can see the upside of down times. They are not willing to give up just because things get complicated. And here’s a news flash: They are not all geniuses. They just don’t accept defeat easily.

This story should inspire you for the times when you are out of duct tape and chewing gum.

Once upon a time, a young donkey asked his grandpa, “How do I grow up to be just like you?”

“Oh, that’s simple,” the elder donkey said. “All you have to do is remember to shake it off and step up.”

“What does that mean?” asked the youngster.

The grandfather replied, “Let me tell you a story... Once, when I was your age, I was out walking. I wasn’t paying attention and fell deep into an old abandoned well. I started braying and braying. Finally an old farmer came by and saw me. I was scared to death.

But then he left. I stayed in that well all night.

“The next morning he came back with a whole group of people, and they looked down at me. Then the old farmer said, ‘The well is abandoned and that

donkey isn’t worth saving, so let’s get to work.’ And believe it or not, they started to shovel dirt into the well. I was going to be buried alive!

“After the first shovels of dirt came down on me, I realized something.

Every time dirt landed on my back, I could shake it off and use it to step up a bit higher! They kept shoveling, and I kept shaking the dirt off and stepping up. “’Shake it off and step up... shake it off and step up...’ I kept repeating to myself for encouragement. And it wasn’t long before I stepped out of the well, exhausted but triumphant.”

So no matter how difficult the situation . . . no matter how bad things get . . . no matter how much dirt gets dumped on you, just remember – shake it off and step up. You’ll be alright.

Mackay’s Moral: When you’re out of resources, it’s time to get resourceful.

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month

Senior Justin Schneider has been chosen as the January Swanville Student of the Month for grades 10-12. He is the son of Karla and Toby Schneider.

“Justin Schneider has been a student of mine in my math classes for the past four years and I am very happy to have him receive the Student of the Month reward,” states Margaret Peterson, Math instructor. She adds, “Justin always has a positive attitude which makes him easy to work with, if he doesn’t understand a math concept he is willing to keep trying until he understands. Justin is one of the students who is taking upper classes and participating in several extracurricular activities. He has been in football, track, and basketball along with being in the theater productions. He is a member of the honor society because he is a well-rounded student. Justin has always shown his teachers respect and is a pleasure to work with. Justin is a fun student

to have in class and I will miss him after he graduates.”

Justin has many interests including biking, acting, snowmobiling and playing basketball and track activities. His future plans are to become a commercial pilot. His school activities include participating in track since his sophomore year, acting in theatre productions also from sophomore year forward and trying basketball for the first time as a senior. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.

Char Bzdok, Science instructor states, “I have had the opportunity and pleasure of teaching Justin for four consecutive years. In this time Justin has displayed maturity and being a sound student. Throughout the years I have also noticed his sense of humor, which I was unaware of when he was a freshman. Justin is a joy to be around and very fun to have in class.”

Justin also volunteers his time and talents by serving banquets at church and also assists in setting up for seasonal decorating.

“Have fun in school and get your work done,” is his advice to fellow classmates. As Andrew Carnegie once said “there is little success where there is little laughter.”

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month Freshman Peyton Jackson has been chosen as the January Swanville Student of the Month for grades 7-9.

Peyton is the son of Todd and Stacy Jackson. Peyton has been active in basketball and football since seventh grade, currently playing both Junior Varsity and Varsity level. He is consistently on the A Honor Roll.

“I have known Peyton since he was an elementary student, and have had the pleasure of coaching him in both football and basketball this season,” states Jay Loven Head Football and Basketball coach. He continues by adding, “As a coach, you could not build a player any better than Peyton. You never have to ask Peyton to ‘work harder,’ he understands what it takes to be successful, and that is work ethic. He is also very coachable, willing to do what is asked of him without questioning why. Peyton also has tremendous dedication. Even when Peyton has been injured or sick, he still attends practice to be sure not fall behind.”

“Outside of athletics, Peyton is always and upbeat young man, looking for the positives in things, rather than focusing on the negatives. He is compassionate of others, making sure nobody feels left out. In coaching, I try to teach “life lessons”, and Peyton is a great example of someone who is a

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m retired, and currently I have about five percent of my retirement savings in gold and silver I’ve been acquiring over the last few years.

I’ve seen gold prices decline significantly, and I’m wondering if I should hang on to it as a safety factor in the event the economy goes bad in a hurry. I want to make sure I’ll still have a safety factor, and something of value, if that happens.

-Steve Dear Steve, What’s the safety factor here? And if everything goes downhill, why does it have value? Gold has this weird allure and mythology around it that says, “I’ve still got something that people will take when the economy crashes.” But the truth is there hasn’t been an instance when people used gold as a medium of exchange in a crashed or failed economy since the Roman Empire.

People still use gold because they believe in it. We also believe in green paper with presidents’ faces on it. So, gold really has no more intrinsic value than that green paper. The only reason we place value on it is because we, the society, place value on it. A failed society might not place value on it anymore.

In a completely failed economy, the first step is usually a takeover by a Fascist government. After that, you get a new color of money – of paper – with a new leader’s face on it. Then, the old stuff isn’t worth anything. It’s very seldom you ever see gold come to the rescue.

I don’t believe in investing in gold for that reason. Plus, the track record on gold, as far as a rate of return, is horrible over the long haul. There was a time a few years ago when everyone went crazy on it, but other than that? Ugh!

-Ray Dear Ray, Ask yourself this question: If time and money weren’t considerations, which one would you rather do?

You’d be on straight commission as an entrepreneur, so there would be no regular checks to count on as income.

You’d have to wake up every single morning, go out and kill something and drag it home. If you don’t, your family won’t eat.

An entrepreneur is the only person I know who can go from sheer terror to sheer exhilaration and back every single day. You’ve got to have a strong mind and heart to make things happen, and it will be a rough ride if you don’t have both. Plus, it won’t last long if you don’t absolutely love what you’re doing.

Everybody wants to be successful in their job and make lots of money, but personal happiness is just as important.

If you wake up jazzed about what you’re going to do every day, chances are you’ll be successful and happy. But if you wake up dreading the day and your job, then I can almost guarantee you won’t be successful financially or happy.

Do lots of research and planning before you make any big changes, Ray. There are great small business ideas still waiting to be had, but to make something good happen you’ve got to find the one that’s right for you!

Swanville High School is pleased to announce its January Athletes of the Month: Stephanie Koetter for Girls’ Basketball and Jordan Sales for Boys’ Basketball.

Coaches’ Comments: “My Athlete of the Month is Stephanie Koetter. Stephanie has been our leading scorer this year averaging 14 points a game. She is doing this while getting double teamed and sometimes triple teamed when she gets the ball. She is also our leading rebounder averaging 8 rebounds a game. The stats alone are worthy of this honor, but what has really impressed me this year with Stephanie is her leadership. She has become a vocal leader with the girls and has taken it upon herself to interact with all her teammates. We hope that Steph continues to work hard as the season starts winding down and continues her positive attitude each day. In the month of January, Jordan averaged 17.9 points, and 10.6 rebounds, while shooting 61% from the field. Jordan is a “quiet” leader both on and off the court, leading by example rather than verbally. Jordan has been a hard-working player throughout his career, doing whatever is asked of him. He will play a large role in the success of the team in the remainder of the Bulldogs’ season. Examples Arise Where Governing Collides with Politics The issue of governing and how it relates to politics is interesting, if not a bit frustrating.

Case in point: the DFL had in its control both houses of the Legislature and the governor’s office during the last biennium, but nothing was done about transportation funding. This year, with state government back in dual control between the two parties, the gas tax once again is front and center of what could be a long and drawn-out process of coming up with some kind of increase to fund our roads and bridges. The reason for not taking it up last year, in the opinion of many including me, was the reluctance to increase the gas tax in an election year.

I think something similar was going on last week when Gov. Dayton announced huge pay increases for upper level members of his cabinet. The size of the increases, ranging from 19 to 58 percent, left many wondering how a sitting governor would dare take on such a

risky, hot-potato political subject. To be clear, we aren’t talking about the average 9-to-5 worker here, but those at the commissioner level who work directly with the governor. And many of those salaries, after the increases take effect, will be up in the $140,000 range.

Gov. Dayton announced earlier that this past election was going to be his last. He doesn’t have to face the voters again and become the potential target of an electorate upset with the granting of big pay increases for top officials. The move was made possible when the DFLcontrolled Legislature in 2013 passed a bill allowing the governor to raise his commissioners’ pay from 85 percent of the governor’s salary up to 133 percent.

And it could all be done without legislative or public approval. All told, the increases could cost the state more than $1.4 million over the next two years.

They took effect on Jan. 5, but it wasn’t until Feb. 4 that the Legislative Coordinating Commission was notified of the salary increases.

The annual “Dairy Day” at the Capital was held last week. Representatives from the dairy industry were on hand for a meeting of the Ag Policy Committee, and we heard testimony about the economic impact those who milk cows and those who process it have on our state.

The number of dairy cows in Minnesota has been relatively stable in recent years at around 400,000, with the average herd size being around 130 head.

Also on the topic of agriculture, I had the opportunity last week to speak before two groups with direct connection to ag in our state. On Tuesday educators and legislators gathered in St. Paul to announce the opening of a new Center of Excellence within the MnSCU system to be known as AgCentric. Senator Dan Sparks, chair of the Ag Committee in the Senate, and I addressed the group as the focus was on a joint effort concerning ag education among the technical colleges in Willmar, Staples and Thief River Falls.

Then, Friday morning in Minneapolis, I spoke before the Government Affairs Committee of the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association. That group was part of a three-day conference attended by well over 2,000 veterinarians and others from around the state. Among their main concerns are funding for a new bio-secure lab on the campus of the University of Minnesota and a loan forgiveness program for graduates of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month U of M Beef Team to Host Cow/Calf Days

By Connie Nelson DV/SA Advocate, Hands of Hope Resource Center February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a subject that educators, parents, grandparents, and friends need to discuss with our tweens and teens. One in three young girls in the US are victims of physical, verbal and or emotional violence by a dating partner.

In some cases this violence has escalated to include sexual assault and rape. It is much less traumatic to discuss this issue and how to prevent it than it is to see your child go through the life altering trauma that will most certainly result from these types of behavior. Statistics show that women between the ages of sixteen and twenty-four experience the highest rate of domestic violence in our population, nearly three times the national average.

Our children are dating at earlier ages than in the past. Parents are often the last to know, or may never know, unless we ask and listen without judgment or blame.

A dating relationship, should be a fun and safe time for your teen. If they don’t seem to be enjoying that dating time any longer, the partner is repeatedly texting, always wanting to know where she or he is, who they’re with and what they are doing. Eating habits change, school attendance becomes an issue, school grades and schedules change, insults on Facebook, or in severe situations your teen has unexplainable or continuing bruises or is sexually assaulted.

So what can we say and do to help our children? First and foremost, we need to set a positive example of healthy relationships in our child’s home. Children need to be taught respect and boundaries, and that they have a right to be respected as well. We need to talk about dating, dating violence, and what to do if your

child is feeling she or he may be in that situation. We need to ask about their day, listen to our kids, and if we need outside assistance in assuring their safety and well-being, that we are not too proud to reach out to an outside resource for that assistance or expertise.

February 10, 2015: At approximately 2135 hours, the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one vehicle accident with injuries on County 47 in Grey Eagle Township. A juvenile female of rural Grey Eagle who was driving a 1998 Chevy Malibu entered the ditch and struck an embankment and suffered injuries. Juvenile Female was transported by Melrose Ambulance to the Melrose Hospital. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Grey Eagle Fire/ Rescue.

Legislative Update -By State Rep. Ron Kresha Just a reminder, last year at this time we were caught in the teeth of the polar vortex. This week, we are once again coming out of some cool weather and headed to milder temperatures so I hope you are able to get out and about.

Also remember, this is one of the best times for viewing high school sports.

Whether you are supporting Long Prairie, Upsala, Pierz, or any of the other great local teams, I wish your team the best and the athletes success.

This last week was a continuation of my two biggest investments for Minnesota. I am a firm believer that economic growth occurs when resources are put into human capital efforts: early education, high paying wages and job growth, and entrepreneurs.

House File 1 is my jobs and economic growth bill. This bill provides tax investment opportunities for Minnesota companies who are willing to invest in their companies and work towards growth.

Dollars invested directly in the community go to our retail shops, schools, charities, and social services. That is not just smart investing; it is the right approach for our communities.

My second human capital investments are centered on protecting and improving our children’s future. I am carrying the Child Protection Task force bill that is designed to make sure children have the safety and security necessary to develop and be ready for school.

The other bill I am carrying is the Early Learning Scholarship bill that focuses scholarships on children who, by the chance of birth, are not given the same opportunity to learn to read and develop skills needed to be successful in kindergarten. More importantly, you will notice my efforts are targeted to those children who have the most need-not universally.

We need to make sure that our scholarship efforts are specifically aimed at the children who we identify as “at risk”.

While the Governor’s proposal is a universal approach, it is grossly underfunded and it puts a tremendous burden on the schools to take in all the kids for preschool. Economically, this is just not feasible nor are our schools ready to be a preschool-12 system. I advocate for schools to work with the K-12 students and we put preschool scholarships in the

RULES & REGULATIONS

$5.00 entry fee per contestant. $2.00 Raffle - $3.00 Fishing.

Must fish in designated area, and have ticket in possession.

All fish entered must be brought to judges stand immediately. Only live and unfrozen fish are eligible.

All holes provided. No power augers in fishing area. Entrant is to maintain holes.

Must have a current Minnesota fishing license and abide by state laws.

Coolers or large containers are not allowed.

No fish houses or vehicles allowed inside of fishing area. All personal articles will be subject to search for illegal fish.

Parking will be provided. Security will be provided.

Decisions of judges will be binding and final.

All ticket sales are final. No refunds.

All prizes are guaranteed.

Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Tickets must be purchased from Club Members or their authorized ticket vendors.

This is a non-profit contest. Profits will be used for charitable needs in Morrison County and Todd County.

All winners are responsible for their own taxes.

Failure to comply with these rules may lead to a contestants disqualification and cancellation of participation in this contest.

Site of contest will be on Long Lake. Hours will be from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Live bait will be available on the ice.

Always be weary of ice conditions. We are not liable for any injury or loss of life or property.

Any alcoholic beverages won have to be claimed by persons of legal age.

Restroom facilities will be available on the lake.

Participants must act and behave in an orderly manner and be responsible for their actions. No debris is to be left in your fishing area after the contest!
