Respect different perspectives -By Harvey Mackay An eccentric p h i l o s o p h y professor gave a one-question final exam after a semester dealing with a broad array of topics. The class was already seated and ready to go when the professor picked up his chair, plopped it on top of his desk and wrote on the board: “Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist.”

Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled in furious fashion. Some students wrote over 30 pages in one hour attempting to refute the existence of the chair. One member of the class, however, was finished in less than a minute.

A week later when the grades were posted, the rest of the group wondered how he could have gotten an “A” when he had barely written anything at all.

His answer consisted of two words: “What chair?”

I’ll let you be the judge: Was this a smartalecky, clueless student who was toying with his professor, or was he seeing through the futility of the exercise with a brilliant answer?

My assessment is that he understood the purpose of the professor’s challenge: What you see is what you get, or is it? Can you judge a book by its cover? Can you believe your lying eyes?

“It is the obvious which is so difficult to see most of the time,” wrote Isaac Asimov in “I, Robot.” “People say ‘It's as plain as the nose on your face.’ But how much of the nose on your face can you see, unless someone holds a mirror up to you?”

I have no doubt that the chair existed.

And I have no doubt that people can see things from a variety of perspectives. When you are

in business, you need to remember that every day.

What you think is obvious, clear and easy to understand may be none of the above to a customer or co-worker. So many misunderstandings result from failing to see things through another’s eyes. The only way to fix that is to understand that perceptions, no matter how seemingly flawed, are reality to those who hold them. Your job is to work with those thoughts.

Yes, that’s a tall order. But ask any successful person how they have worked around a diversity of opinions, and you will likely discover that person has learned how to listen and apply what they hear.

Author and therapist Shannon L. Alder said: “Most misunderstandings in the world could be avoided if people would simply take the time to ask, ‘What else could this mean?’”

Perspective dominates much of how we present ourselves and our products: Which attributes do we think will appeal to an audience? How do we perceive our customers?

Will people see what we think they should see?

Are we thinking broadly enough? Focus groups offer great perspectives on those questions and help shape the direction of ad campaigns and website design. Asking for another opinion is almost always a good idea. Pay attention, especially if you are trying to sell chairs, but your customers ask, “What chair?”

One of my favorite explanations of perspective comes from English biologist and archaeologist Sir John Lubbock: “What we do see depends mainly on what we look for ... In the same field the farmer will notice the

crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the colouring, sportmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.”

How simple is that?At our MackayMitchell Envelope Company, customers may see an advertising opportunity, an eye-popping color, a novel shape or an efficient way to send a bill.

They are all correct, of course, but we need to know what the customer is looking for and how best to convey their message. We offer suggestions, present options, and listen to their specific needs so that we can satisfy their requests. We still sell more #10 white window envelopes than any other, but only because that’s what our customers want.

I have a “kitchen cabinet” of advisors whom I consult on every imaginable topic.

The only request I make of them is that they provide unfiltered honest advice. I want to hear what I haven’t seen for myself. Sometimes, I have to swallow my pride, but believe me, it’s kept me from losing my shirt. And my chairs!

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Winter Things

Recently there has been a lot of discussion about snow and cold weather. According to the older folks, it has been uncomfortably cold with frequent snow fall, but they remember times when it was colder with a lot more snow. Most of the stories involved the middle 1900's. Maybe some of the snow depths appeared greater because the person telling the story was not as tall at that time. Maybe the snow drifts seemed deeper because at that time there weren't as many mechanical devices to move snow and the memory includes physical labor and a scoop shovel. Many of the storms at that time were a surprise occurrence due to the lack of our current weather reports. The roads at that time were in many cases lower than the surrounding ditches, so they were the first areas to collect blowing snow. Four wheel drive pickups were still in the planning stages. Horse drawn sleighs traveling across the fields were often the only alternative. It was difficult, but those who told the stories must have survived the crisis. How's that for a logical conclusion!

I too remember being unable to go to school for 7 school days, because the bus couldn't get through the road. The milk truck couldn't get to us either, so the milk was separated to reduce the volume, but we still ran out of milk and shotgun cans. This left no alternative but to load the cream on a sled and have the horses pull it across fields toward the closest creamery, which was about 6 miles away. Luckily, the team met a milk

truck about 2 miles from town and the truck took the load to the creamery. Later that winter my mother needed to see the Dr. The pickup had a rack on the back, which was heaped with cob corn, chains put on the back wheels and we headed for town. We made it to town, but on the way home we found the road blocked by the neighbors car, stuck in the snow in the middle of the road. The chains were taken off of the pickup and put on the stalled car. After shoveling and pushing, the car began to move forward. He kept the chains on his car so he could get home. He then broke trail for us. We had another set of chains at the farm, so we were not concerned about the next snow.

At that time there were no TVs, computers and cell phones, so we made our fun outdoors in the snow. We would get together and slide down roads, driveways and hills. The sliding toys included scoop shovels, plastic formed sleds, Radio Flyer sleds and toboggans. Some of the sliding toys were not easy to steer, so direction was changed by dragging a foot.

There were many accidents from veering off of the trail and tipping over in the snow, but that was all in the fun of the afternoon. Some injuries occurred, but the only ones I remember were scratches, cuts and bruises. Stories of broken arms and legs were common. But it was lots of fun.

About the middle of February there would be a few days of warm weather which would cause melt water to gather in the low areas in the field. This water would freeze after the weather changed, so there were now ponds to ice skate on without first needing to remove snow. This was interesting, since we were able to see the frozen plants under the ice.

When the lake froze over without a coating of snow, we could skate over the shallow water areas and see fish and occasionally a muskrat

in the water below us. The fish were usually small sunfish, but there were lots of them.

LaVern H. Scherping

LaVern H. “Vern” Scherping, age 76 of Freeport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, February 3, 2022 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, February 8 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

LaVern Henry Scherping was born August 23, 1945 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Lawrence and Laura (Luethmers) Scherping. He farmed all his life on the family farm south of Freeport.

He thoroughly enjoyed driving truck. He drove truck for Fox Trucking and for Astech in his later years when even someone called to haul a load, he was always ready to go. Vern loved his truck, taking care of cattle, and his dog and cats. Whenever he had some time off, he loved going fishing. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Survivors include his brother, Loren (Jane) Scherping of Freeport; sister, Lou Ann (Norb) Jost of Richmond; nephews, Jason (Amy) Scherping, Bryan (Kim) Scherping, and Randy (Megan) Scherping; nieces, Sandy (Monte) Flath and Kristin (Nicholas) Kerfeld; great-nieces and great-nephews, Tyler, Alyssa, Wyatt, Hailey, McKenna, Callie, Savannah, Sawyer, Freya, Ayla, Carly and Henry.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Laura Scherping; and niece, Lori Scherping.

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Peter Prokott, 96, of the Upsala area, was held Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Fr. David Grundman officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery. Peter passed away Tuesday morning with family at his side at the Melrose Hospital. Arrangements were made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Upsala.

Peter was born on February 21, 1925 in Swan River Township to Paul and Anna (Wachnik) Prokott. He grew up with ten other siblings. Peter received his eighth-grade diploma from District 45.

He desired to attend high school, but stayed home to work with his dad on the farm. On June 19, 1950 he married Lorene Trettel at Holy Cross in North Prairie and together they raised five children. Peter and Lorene rented farms until they purchased their own near Upsala in 1964 where he resided until his death. Peter was a strong hardworking farmer.

He loved the animals especially the hogs. As a side job he laid block for basements, built chimneys and fireplaces. He was the local masonry for many families in the area. He built several buildings on the farm and those skills were carried over to his woodworking projects. He built file cabinets for each of his children and several grandchildren. He also built book cases, hutches, and cabinets. Peter repurposed the old pews into deacon benches and crosses when St. Mary’s (where he was a lifelong member) built a new church. Dancing with his wife to Old Time music like the polka and waltz gave him great pleasure. Not only did he dance to Old Time music, he also played it on his concertina. In the evenings, he could be found playing cards at local card tournaments or with neighbors, friends and family. His favorites were 500, smear and cribbage. Peter had a lifelong love for fishing and was always looking for the best fishing hole. Peter always had a story to tell and could talk to anyone.

He liked to ask people to guess how old he was.

Because of his youthful looks, they always guessed his age to be much younger. He valued education and was proud that all five of his children earned a college degree. When the love of his life became wheel chair bound, he became a caregiver and homemaker. He even learned how to can peaches and make apple pie under her guidance. After perfecting his skills, he taught his grandchildren how to make pie. He will be missed by many.

Peter is survived by his children Renee (Dave) Scholz, Upsala; Elaine (Daryl) Tasler, Windom; Arnie (Jan) Prokott, Eau Claire, WI; Leonice (Don Kolo) Prokott, rural Holdingford; Jen (Rich) Sullivan, Chanhassen; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother and sister; Martin Prokott, St. Cloud, FL; Marti Kujawa, St. Paul; as well as many other family and friends.

He is greeted in Heaven by his wife of 66 years, Lorene, parents Paul and Anna, as well as his brothers and sister; Thomas Prokott, Leonard Prokott, Lucy Struzyk, Adolph Prokott, Mary Niezgock, Cecilia Fussy, Mike Prokott, and Leo Prokott.

Marjorie M. Beste

Marjorie M. “Margie” Beste, age 88 of Freeport, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on Friday, February 4, 2022 at the CentraCare Care Center (Pine Villa) in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, February 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Marjorie Mae Illies was born May 3, 1933 in Elrosa, Minnesota to John and Hilda (Nathe) Illies. She was united in marriage to Alois “Al” Beste on December 30, 1957 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa, Minnesota.

Margie worked at Kraft Foods in Melrose and at Speedy Print in St. Cloud. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Women. Margie enjoyed painting, sewing, quilting, gardening, and bowling.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Al Beste of Freeport; children, Jane (Craig) Pixley of Eden Prairie, John (Yvonne) Beste of Freeport, Tom Beste of Crosslake, and Joan (Karl) Klaphake of Spicer; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; sister, Lois (Phil) Williams; sister-in-law, Colette Illies; stepsister, Lailah (Jim) Simmer; and step-sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Rieland, and Bernie Rieland.

Margie was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Hilda (Rieland) Illies; brothers, Fr. Wilfred Illies, Donald Illies, and James Illies; sister, Lillian Illies; sister-in-law, Viola Illies; stepbrothers, Bert Rieland, Ronald Rieland, Roman (Millie) Rieland, and Orville Rieland; and step-sister, Margie (Bob) Spanjers.

Memorials are preferred to CentraCare Care Center (Pine Villa) and CentraCare Hospice.

Anthony “Tony” Armbrust, 76 year old life-long resident of Sobieski, MN passed away Sunday, February 6, 2022 at Lakewood Health Systems in Staples, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, February, 11, 2022, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery north of Little Falls. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 AM on Friday at the church. Caring for Tony and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Memorials are preferred to the Sobieski Lions Club.

Anthony “Tony” Armbrust was born on April 18, 1945 in Dickinson, North Dakota to the late Anton and Katherine (Dukart) Armbrust. Tony graduated with the class of 1963 from Little Falls Community High School and later attended Staples Community College for Mechanics. He was also a member of the United States Marine Corp. Tony was united in marriage to Judy Wold on April 29, 1968. They moved to Tony’s family farm in 1972, where together they raised their 2 children and farmed. Tony worked for the Iron Workers 512, ABS and Twin City Freight.

After he retired, Tony and Judy started their own business, American Traffic, Marketing and Signing.

Tony was a jack of all trades. He enjoyed restoring collectible vehicles and tractors, hunting, playing cards and having breakfast at the West Side Café. He loved watching westerns and M.A.S.H, traveling to Arizona in the winter and going to car shows. Most of all, Tony loved spending quality time with his family and beautiful wife. He was a charter member of the Sobieski Lions Club, Lone Eagle Auto Club, VFW, Sobieski Sportsman Club and Ironworkers Union.

Tony was truly loved and will be greatly missed.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, Judy; son, Todd (Heidi) Armbrust; daughter, Tina (Khamis) Lemi; grandchildren, Justin Armbrust, Jordan (Mason) Brown, Jacob (Brooke) Olson, Jack Olson, Emmanuel Lado Samuel, Cathryn Kaku Samuel; great-grandchildren, Christian Brown, Greyson Armbrust, Declan Armbrust; sisters, Darlene (Harvey) Axel, Agnes Konrad and Dianne (Butch) Lodin.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents, Anton and Katherine Armbrust; brothers-in-law, Robert Konrad, Kenneth Wold and Steve Wold.

LeRoy Johannes

LeRoy Ewald Johannes died peacefully at his home with family on January 25th, 2022.

Services were held Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Church of All Saints, St. Mary's in Holdingford.

Interment will be at the Arban Cemetery at a later date.

LeRoy was born October 8, 1942 to Leonard and Josephine (Maile) Johannes. LeRoy served in the U.S Army early in life and after returning home he worked as a machinist at Electrolux until retirement. He married in July of 1966 to the love of his life Theresa Becker at the Sacred Heart Church of Arban. LeRoy was a member of the Holdingford Legion and Knights of Columbus. He will be remembered by family and friends for his helpfulness, kindness, sense of humor and teasing way. LeRoy had a love for nature. He liked to feed and watch the birds and go hunting with family and friends. He was handy with fixing cars and remodeling his home.

Survived by his wife, Theresa of 55 years; his children, Debra Kostreba (David), Keith, Sandra Moss, Lisa Rooney (Pat) and Curt; siblings, Kathleen Ebnet (Jerome), Delores Pilarski (Martin), Allen (Donna), Arnold (Kaye), Mary Marder, Gerry (Carol), Diana Yorek (Dennis), Alverna Voss (Myron), Kevin (Pam); 16 cherished grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, his son Tim, his brother Kenneth and son-in-law Todd Gerads.

Burial will take place in the Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville, MN. A visitation will be held from 9-11 A.M on Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Caring for Jeanette and her family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Swanville, MN. Jeanette was born on June 26, 1949 in Little Falls, MN to the late Raymond and Lorraine (Schneider) Barthel. She grew up in Swanville, MN and attended Swanville High School where she was in the class of ’67. She was united in marriage to Clarence Podraza on March 2, 1968 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. Together Jeanette and Clarence made their home in Swanville, MN where they were blessed with two children, Thomas and Tina. Jeanette was employed at various places throughout her working years, some of which include Munsingwear, T.O Plastics, Grams Farms, and IWCO where she retired from. She was a loving family person, her family meant the world to her. Jeanette loved hosting her family during Swanville Carnival weekend. She was always concerned about others' needs before her own.

Jeanette also enjoyed puzzles, bird watching, caring for her flowers, taking Sunday drives, and spending time with friends and family. She will be forever remembered as a strong and feisty little lady that had a great sense of humor. Jeanette was a fighter, beating cancer twice and at the same time helping her daughter, Tina, battle her own cancer. Her family will forever be grateful for the love she showed to them and all the beautiful memories which they will cherish forever.

Jeanette is survived by husband, Clarence Podraza of Swanville, MN; son, Thomas (Gretchen) Podraza; granddaughter, Avie Podraza; brothers, Curtis Barthel, David (Kathy) Barthel, Mike (Shelley) Barthel, Bruce (Jeanette) Barthel, and Dale (Jackie) Barthel; sisters, Sharon (Stan) Miller, Betty (Larry) Loven, Mary (Jim) Rocheleau, Brenda (Jeff) Baum, and Sandy (Richard Mortenson) Barthel; and many nieces and nephews.

Dear Motor Medics, During my last oil change my shop told me I needed to change my cabin air filter. I did not know my car had a cabin air filter or even what one was until they showed me my dirty filter.

They did not charge me much to replace it and my air seems to blow much stronger now. We had a Windstar van that gradually lost air flow from the vent too and I wonder if it had one that was clogged. My question is can they be changed at home by the average Joe and how often should they be changed?

They not only keep the dirt out of the inside of the vehicle, they keep the HVAC system components clean so they last longer. The filters are a great idea but until everyone knows if they have one and how to care for them, they can be a hindrance. If the filters are not changed you can lose airflow like you experienced and in the worst case damage may occur to the system. When buying a vehicle ask if it is equipped with a cabin air filter and where it is located. Filters are available at most parts stores and can usually be changed at home in a short amount of time for a reasonable cost. Check the manual for filter replacement intervals.

Dear Dale, Air conditioning is not hard to work on with the proper tools, training, and equipment.

One of the most basic tools we use for testing is a set of gauges to read system pressures. We can tell a lot about the system just from the readings we take. If you attempt to charge a system without being able to read the system pressures on both low and high you run the risk of system damage. Just pumping in refrigerant is not the answer. Yes, there are people who use the kits and have had good luck but we see many vehicles that have been charged with a do it yourself kit come to our shop for repairs that could have been cheaper if done professionally in the first place. Do some heavy research and ask plenty of questions before you just add refrigerant using a do it yourself kit.

Eliminating state Social Security tax a top priority for relief There has been discussion over the past few years In Minnesota of reducing or even eliminating the state income tax on Social Security benefits. The Legislature did take a step in that direction three years ago when it increased the income ceiling at which a state subtraction used to reduce the amount of tax owed would begin to phase out.

It does get a bit complicated, but suffice to say that both the federal and state governments tax a portion of Social Security benefits. That amount is largely dependent on a person's income, and for the purposes of this explanation, we will use only income levels that apply to a couple filing jointly. The numbers are reduced somewhat for those who file individually.

On federal tax returns, there are three levels of exclusion. For joint filers whose income is under $32,000, the entire Social Security benefit is excluded for tax purposes. For incomes between $32,000 and $44,000, the exclusion declines to 50 percent. And for those above $44,000, the exclusion is reduced to 15 percent.

Whatever that federal exclusion is, that same amount flows through to the state return. In addition, there is a state subtraction that begins to phase out when income levels rise above $79,480. The maximum amount of the state subtraction is $5,240. These numbers pertain to tax year 2020 and are indexed for inflation and adjusted annually.

I support the elimination of the state tax on these benefits. Minnesota is among the last dozen states to still tax Social Security. Folks have paid into the system throughout their working careers, and with many recipients on fixed incomes, these Social Security benefits

shouldn't be taxed. None of our surrounding states levy this tax. Those opposed to this change in our tax code say it would mainly benefit the wealthy. I've visited with many folks who support this change and, as one told me, "I don't consider myself wealthy, and those benefits should not be taxed!"

On the legislative calendar this week are hearings in both chambers on the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund deficit. On the House side, a DFL bill is scheduled to be heard in committee that would make it easier to close schools to in-person learning, one that could give parents only a one-day notice. It would allow schools to declare a "crisis learning period," which would make on-line learning the primary mode of instruction.

Concern is rising over the discovery of Avian Bird Flu in other parts of the world.

Widespread reports coming from Europe earlier this winter have been followed by cases among wild birds along the U.S east coast in Virginia and in both North and South Carolina. And now, last week an announcement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of a confirmed case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in a commercial flock in Nova Scotia in eastern Canada.

The worry is that wild birds' migratory patterns could spread the disease to flyways further to the west, including the Mississippi flyway in the central U.S. This serves as a reminder that AI is spreading around the world in wild birds as they migrate.

It was back in 2015 that our state suffered a major outbreak of the disease, although that year it was first reported on the west coast. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture along with the Board of Animal Health are working with poultry producers in reviewing the biosecurity plans they have in place. I am confident we are better prepared today if an outbreak occurs than we were seven years ago.

Crash: February 4, 2022: At approximately 8:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the intersection of County Road 40 and County Road 41 in Farming Township for a two-vehicle crash with possible injuries.

Upon arrival, deputies located Roger Peter Klassen, 81 of St. Joseph, in his vehicle, a 2004 Toyota Rav 4, needing to be extracted by the fire department. The other driver, Katherine Elizabeth Gravdahl, 32, of Albany, and a juvenile passenger had no injuries. Investigation showed that Klassen was traveling westbound on County Road 40 approaching County Road 41 when he failed to stop for the stop sign and entered the intersection in front of Gravdahl’s 2010 GMC Sierra. He was extracted by the fire department and transported to the St. Cloud Hospital by ambulance.

Stearns County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were assisted by the Minnesota State Patrol, Albany Fire Department, and the Melrose Ambulance service.

days a week to work at the Todd County Care Center. In her travels she listens to the radio talk shows. Last week she shared with me an exciting program that she only listened to part of but wanted me to listen to it. Just so you know, I usually don’t take time to just listen to a program and I do not listen to the radio, so when I decided to look for it online and listen, it was way out of character. I shared my experience on Facebook and had many people respond to it, so I thought I would share it with you.

The radio show was “Living on the Edge” by Chip Ingram. The title to the show was “Learning how to stop stress before it starts." Chip’s premise was to take the “Hurry” out of your life. That caught my attention because it seems that I am always trying to beat deadlines. A fellow pastor once told me that Sundays come with an alarming regularity. Now, pastoral work may seem stress free to most, but it is far from stress free. Many pastors finish sermons on Saturday night because the “other” pastoral duties take up so much of his time.

I was reminded that we need to take time to smell the roses or go outside and go for a walk and let the cold air hit your face. Take

der your feet. Take time to spend with God (not a rushed time, but a set aside time, a holy time). Jesus made time to get alone with His Father. Mark 6:45-46 says “Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.”

One statement that Chip Ingram said that caught my attention was, “Speed and godliness are incompatible. Speed and peace are incompatible. Hurry and loving others is incompatible. Hearing God’s voice and hurry are incompatible. Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life.” Another name for ruthlessly might be intentionally, which means to go after it with a passion. Chip said that when he decided that he needed to slow down, he drove in the right lane. This cracked me up.

If you have ever driven in Minneapolis or any big city, the freeway driving is far from stress free. But Chip was intentional about not being in a hurry. Now, he had other examples, but I would actually suggest taking the time and listen to it, but don’t put it on top of a stress filled “to do list."
