No. They just let their creativity take over. And we benefit from their inventive ways to overcome life’s little challenges. Consider these items, born of necessity, 100 years ago.

Mrs. Earl Dickson, an inexperienced cook, often burned and cut herself back at the turn of the 20th century.

Mr. Dickson, a Johnson and Johnson employee, got plenty of practice in hand bandaging. Out of concern for his wife’s safety, he began to prepare bandages ahead of time so that his wife could apply them by herself. By combining a piece of surgical tape and a piece of gauze, he fashioned the first crude adhesive strip bandage.

At 13 years old, Chester Greenwood’s head was cold one December day in 1873. To protect his ears while ice skating, he found a piece of wire, and with his grandmother’s help, padded the ends. In the beginning, his friends laughed at him. However, when they realized that he was able to stay outside skating long after they had gone inside freezing, they stopped laughing.

Instead, they began to ask Chester to make ear covers for them, too. In my home state of Minnesota, earmuffs are standard winter equipment.

During the hot summer of 1913, Clarence Crane, a chocolate candy manufacturer, found himself facing a dilemma. When he tried to ship his chocolates to candy shops in other cities they melted into gooey

blobs. His customers didn’t want to deal with the mess and deferred their orders until cooler weather. Mr. Crane needed to find a substitute for the melted chocolates if he wanted to keep his customers. He experimented with hard candy which wouldn’t melt during shipment. Using a machine designed for making medicinal pills, Crane produced small, circular candies with a hole in the middle. And that is how Life-Savers were born.

The term Frisbee did not always refer to the flying plastic disks that have spawned a variety of games. More than 100 years ago, in Bridgeport, Conn., William Russell Frisbie owned the Frisbie Pie Company and delivered his pies locally. All of his pies were baked in the same type of 10” round tin with a raised edge, wide brim, six small holes in the bottom, and “Frisbie Pies” on the bottom. Playing catch with the tins soon became a popular local sport. However, the tins were slightly dangerous when a toss was missed. It became the Yale University custom to yell “Frisbie” when throwing a pie tin. In the ’40s when plastic emerged, the pie-tin game was recognized as a manufacturable and marketable product. Now FRISBEE ® is a registered trademark of Wham-O Mfg. Co. All those inventions started innocently enough, without great expectations. “The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Snow Companionship

Snow happens in Minnesota. It is almost like a dear friend that has left us for a long vacation and will be coming home soon. We wait for it’s arrival and when it comes, we experience a happy sensation when we see the whole world changed from a dirty dark color of the fall to a beautiful, clean, white, fresh world. For a few days, we actually enjoy the scenery and the drop in temperatures. However, just like a visiting friend or relative, after a period of time, we aren’t as excited about them being in our world. After shoveling the sidewalks, driveway and that pile of snow the plow left at the end of the driveway, we begin to look forward to the snow not being here.

Farms today also need to get snow out of the farmstead, but since they have had many years of experience with snow removal, they have machinery to do most of the work. The old scoop shovel is now primarily used to clean up spilled grain around the elevator and this task is done when it is not 20 degrees below zero.

We may have heard stories about a time when a horse pulled sled was the usual mode of transportation in winter. The song about a “one horse open sleigh” sounds great. After some serious thought, some parts of the ride

was not so great. Even though the occupants of the sleigh had clothing made of sheep skin, horse blankets and warm rocks to keep the feet warm, facing the below zero breeze had to be very cold on their faces. Remember, this was the mode of transportation and it was done in all kinds of weather on roads or trails that were not improved to today’s standards. But it was better than walking!

One fun thing I experienced as a youth was skiing. My Uncle had a pair of wooden skis which I used. The binding for the boot was a leather strap to fit over the toe. It was enjoyable to travel over the snow on the fields. After traveling for a while the ice would build up under your boot, which had to be chipped off with the ski pole. Several times during the ice chipping, the wind would blow across the ski and send it scooting down a hill. Now you are standing on the hill in two feet of snow with one ski, watching the ski travel 100 yards away. The trip to retrieve the lost ski was sometimes a real challenge.

When I was about 10 my Christmas present was a pair of used hockey skates. Knowing that my feet would grow as I grew older, the skates were size 10. They were too big, but a couple of pair of knit socks made the feet large enough to fit the skates. The best skating I remember was when the lake froze over with no snow on it and myself and a couple of friends were able to skate the entire length of the mile long lake.

If I still had skates, I’d like to do lake skating today, but I’d probably fall and end up in a nursing home. It’s best to just have the memories.

She has explored creativity for nearly 30 years and her comprehensive research has uncovered some myth-defying facts: • Money and rewards don’t necessarily inspire creativity.

• Tight deadlines and pressure to produce don’t foster innovation.

• Competition doesn’t induce creativity.

• Neither sadness nor fear fuel creative breakthroughs.

In order for creativity to blossom, workers need to feel deeply engaged in their projects, skilled enough to accomplish them, and free of negative influences – unnecessary distractions,

politics, resource roadblocks and unwarranted critical feedback.

I might add that management needs to be open to ideas from all sources – not just the so-called “creative” departments. We all have a streak of creativity in us. Remember that the next time you need a Band-Aid or enjoy a Life-Saver!

Some of us remember a rabbit hunt after the first snowfall. We would take the old pickup across the fields on a moonlit night and chase jack rabbits.

A really fun way to spend an evening.

Today this sport would not be possible, since jackrabbits are very few in number and it’s a good possibility that there is a law against it.

We’ve learned to live with our annual snow accumulation. Some of us just put on a heavier jacket, warm cap and gloves and maybe some long underwear. Others go south to tell their

friends about our extreme cold and 3 foot snowfalls. Maybe their colorful stories about Minnesota weather holds our state population down. There is usually a bright side to every situation.

Obituaries Delmar L. Zeller

Memorial services will be 11:00 am T h u r s d a y, December 8, 2016 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Delmar Zeller who died Friday at the Long Prairie Hospital.

The Rev. Noah Wehrspann will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Park Rapids. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of services Thursday at the church in Long Prairie.

Delmar was born in Park Rapids to Lawrence & Elizabeth “Effie” (Terhark) Zeller. He grew up in Park Rapids and married JoAnn Voshell on November 27, 1952. The couple moved to Milwaukee, WI and then back to Park Rapids before moving to Long Prairie. He worked for Minnesota Power for many years until his retirement in 1987. Delmar was a member of the Long Prairie Fire Department from 1966-1993 and was also a member of the Long Prairie Lions Club for over 40 years. He was an avid sports fan, always

watching the Twins and Vikings. He enjoyed playing golf and all sports. He enjoyed spending time at the casino as well as spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. He always looked forward to going up north to deer hunting camp with the guys. He loved to read the Mpls StarTribune and waited for it to arrive every morning. He and JoAnn had a love for cats, as they always had one and for many years fed the neighborhood cats.

Family was very important to Delmar, he enjoyed spending time with them. He always enjoyed having a nice car, usually red in color. He was able to take his dream trip to Alaska. He always enjoyed watching the TV shows, “Alaska: The Last Frontier” and “Gold Rush.”

Survivors include his children, Jayne (Clint) Carlson of Fiji; Mike (Linda) of Stacy, MN; Judy (Randy) Beaver of Verndale; grandchildren, Joshua Carlson, Melissa (Bob) Burth, Zenaida (Leon) Nguyen, Shantel (Nick) Sundby, Chelsa Beaver; great grandchildren, Alexa Zeller, Sean Zeller, Matthew Nguyen, Lilly Nguyen, Blake & Avery Sundby, Arienne Burth, Logan Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnn in 2011, brothers, Harold, Donald and Virgil.

Rev. Robert (Pastor Bob) Paul Bernard, Jr., age 64, of Eagle Bend, formerly of Freeport and Blaine, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 3, 2016, following a brief illness.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 9 at Harvest Church in Freeport with Rev. Clarence St. John and Rev. Robert P. Bernard III officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Family and friends may visit Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Patton Schad Funeral Home in Melrose, and on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church in Freeport.

Pastor Bob was born August 20, 1952 in Minneapolis, MN to Robert and Donna (Masters) Bernard. On January 26, 1974, Bob married Cathy Jo Perry in Alexandria, VA. He served his country in the US Navy from 1972 to 1976, at the Defense Language Institute, Bolling AFB, WDC, where he was awarded the Joint Chief of Staff Medal and as a Master at Arms on the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier. He was a 1979 Magna Cum Laude graduate of North Central Bible College, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pastoral Studies. He attended the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, Springfield, MO, where he received a Master of Arts Degree in Biblical Literature and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL, where he received his Master of Divinity degree.

Pastor Bob began his full time ministry as the founder of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, DeKalb, IL in 1979. Since then, he has also pastored churches in Pontiac, IL; Crown Point, IN; Mason, MI; Freeport, MN (founder of Harvest Church); and Eagle Bend, MN. He traveled to South America and India teaching pastor’s schools for young ministers. He also served as an adjunct professor for North Central

University and the Minnesota District of the Assemblies of God School of Ministry. Pastor Bob had an undeniable love of teaching about Jesus and the Bible to everyone he would meet. While in Freeport, Pastor Bob drove school bus for the Albany Area School District. He especially enjoyed watching his students in their extra-curricular activities.

In recent years, Pastor Bob developed his trademark seasoning “Grillin’ Magic” that he sold at craft fairs and online to help support his many mission projects.

His family will continue to maintain this venture in his memory. He was an avid golfer and fisherman, often sharing his boat and helping many friends to catch that elusive “first ever” fish. He loved being “Papa” to his grandsons watching them play baseball and teaching them to fish.

Generations of families have been blessed and changed forever by the ministry and friendship of Pastor Bob. Whether family, church member, lifelong friend, or neighbor from town; everyone was a friend and could always count on Pastor Bob for love, generosity, Godly counsel and encouragement.

Every personal encounter he had ended with Pastor Bob making sure that he shared the love of Jesus’ with whoever was around. It was his life’s calling to ensure that everyone around him grew in the grace and knowledge of Jesus every day.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Robert Paul Bernard, Sr. and Donna Mae Bernard. He is survived by his devoted wife, Rev. Cathy Jo, daughter Rev. Donna Marie Falvo, (Rev. Joshua), son Rev. Robert Paul Bernard, III (Rev. Rachelle) and six grandsons Dominic, Dylan, Derek Falvo and Pauley (Robert IV), Payton, and Jackson Bernard, as well as his sister, Elizabeth Bernard, his maternal uncle, Bud (Marge) Masters and many beloved cousins.

Serving as casket bearers will be Bob Bernard III, Joshua Falvo, Rick Hellermann, Steve Danzl, Patrick Harrington, David Rambo, Robert Payne, and Patrick Jack. Raymond A. “Ray” Barten Raymond A. “Ray” Barten, age 91 of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 10 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating and Rev. Marvin Enneking, and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m.

Friday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Knights of Columbus and St. Andrew’s Catholic United Financial will pray at 5 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Raymond A. Barten was born February 18, 1925 in Elrosa, Minnesota to Nicholas and Cecelia (Deters) Barten.

He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Spanier on October 11, 1948 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spring Hill.

The couple lived in West Union and then moved to Greenwald where they lived for 60 years. Ray’s passion was church and farming. He was a founder of Catholic United Financial in Greenwald, member of the Queen of Peace General Assembly, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and Knights of Columbus Council #1633, Greenwald Recreation Club, and sang in the church choir for many years. Ray enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing,

Janlin Renee Tomford F u n e r a l Service was held at 2 pm Friday, December 2, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Long Prairie, for Janlin R. Tomford, age 51 of Long Prairie who passed away on Tuesday at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Rev. Gary Taylor officiated and burial was at Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Clotho.

Janlin Renee Holen was born December 15, 1964 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Robert Holen and Marilyn Shaske. The family lived in the Twin Cities for a time before moving to Long Prairie in 1970. She attended Long Prairie High School graduating in 1982.

She worked for several area business and most recently was working as a program counselor for Meridan Services. Janlin married Harlon Tomford on February 15, 2000 in Las Vegas. They made their home

Elaine Mary Butkowski was born March 27, 1931 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Edith (Coe) Butkowski. She graduated from Melrose High School and became a bookkeeper for Kraft Foods in Melrose.

She was united in marriage to Roman Blommel on June 16, 1953 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. The couple farmed in Millwood Township and retired from farming in 1998. Elaine also worked as a bookkeeper at Freeport Co-op and First Stop for ten years, retiring in 2000.

Lisa Hanowski, Director of CHI Home Health and Hospice, was the guest speaker at last Thursday’s noontime Little Falls Kiwanis Meeting. She told us how CHI Health at Home, a department of St. Gabriel’s Hospital, allows home care and hospice staff to closely communicate with hospital and physicians regarding plan of care. CHI Health at Home services provide many benefits to the client. They enable acute care services to be delivered to people in need in their own homes at a fraction of the cost of hospitalization. Hospice provides care to those people who are dealing with the natural feelings, reactions, and problems accompanying death. Services Provided An interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social worker, clergy, and trained volunteers aid in the care and support of the client and family. Michael and Kiersten Wolbeck of Grey Eagle are proud to announce the birth of their son, Bennett Brian Wolbeck, born Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 7:04 p.m. at the CentraCare Health-Melrose.

Bennett weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 21 ½ inches in length.

Welcoming Bennett home is his big sister Mariah 5 ½ years old.

Upsala Sr. High School Student of the Month The staff at Upsala High School are proud to announce Andy Ripplinger as the October Student of the Month. He is a senior at UHS. He is the son of Paul and Susie Ripplinger.

Ripplinger is on the Basketball team, involved in the Drama Club and participates in Pep Band.

His academic achievements include consistently being on the honor roll at school and was a Student of the Month for Music more than once and Ag/Vo Tech.

lege Economics. “Mr. Pi always has something funny to say.”

Mr. Piasecki (aka Mr. Pi) said, “Andy Ripplinger is one of those students that teachers love to have in class.

Andy is always ready to discuss any political topic in my college economics or history classes. He holds his position on his social and political viewpoints without offending anyone and staying very positive. I believe that he would make an excellent candidate for a political office in the future and he would definitely have my vote.”

Ripplinger is very busy outside of school, volunteering with the Elementary Boys Basketball program and is a leader at church youth group.

In his free time Ripplinger enjoys hunting and watching WWE. Future plans include attending Saint Cloud Tech College for plumbing.

Upsala Jr. High School Student of the Month

J e s s i c a Lange has been chosen as the October Upsala Junior High Student of the Month. She is the seventh grade daughter of Brian and Beth Lange.

Her family is very important to her.

In school, Lange participates in Junior High Band, basketball and was in the fall play. Lange has done very well in all of her classes so far. She was on the “A” honor roll first quarter.

Previous academic achievements include reading over a million words in the school reading challenge. She was the winner of the 2014 District Geography Bee and one of the finalists in 2015.

Her favorite and most valuable class is Art, because “I get to paint and express myself.”

Mrs. Cheney, Band & Choir Director said, “Jessica is a very conscientious student who always strives to do well.

Her attention to her school and extracurricular work make her a top notch student that is very enjoyable to have in class.”

Mrs. Vershure, Science Teacher said, “Jessie is a very happy, positive, hard-working student and an amazing example for her peers!”

Outside of school she is a library volunteer. She enjoys playing basketball, reading, painting and listening to music.

Lange is not sure of her future career. She plans to keep working hard in school and “see what lies in store for me.”

Advice for her classmates is, “Always do your best and never give up!”

Solomon is recognized as a great leader. And as the author of Psalm 72 he describes the leadership qualities of a king that would be honored and blessed of God. It is no wonder, then that he begins with justice and righteousness. It is almost impossible to imagine what it would be like if every leader at every level in every organization was committed to being just and righteous. Yet, this is what God wants and expects of leaders.

“Endow the king with Your justice, O God...May he judge Your people with righteousness!” Although our text reads justice, Solomon was asking God for leaders to set in motion a process that every leader would “do acts of justice, based on righteousness” that flowed from the top down. Solomon wanted everyone to be treated fairly.

Of course, we say, “That’s not possible, Lord.” But He says to each of us “as one of my disciples you must do this. Even if no one else demonstrates my justice and if no one else shows my righteousness to those around them then you must set the example. You are accountable to me!”

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m 38 years old, and I’ve got $12,000 in student loans still hanging over my head. It’s the only debt I have.

I make $30,000 a year, and I’ve managed to save $12,000, but I’m also driving a junky, old car that will have to be replaced soon. Should I split the money I’ve saved and buy a $6,000 car while paying off $6,000 of the student loan?

-Phil Dear Phil, If I’m in your shoes, I want that student loan out of my life as quickly as possible. At the same time, I don’t want you living life without some money in the bank.

If you’ve followed me for very long, you know I teach the Baby Steps when it comes to getting out of debt and saving money. Baby Step 1 is to save a beginner emergency fund of $1,000.

Baby Step 2 is to pay off all debt, except for your home, using the debt snowball method. The third Baby Step is to build a fully funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

You don’t have quite enough on hand for your idea and to have something left over. I recommend paying off $11,000 of the school loan now and then finishing it up as you go. It won’t take much more time. Limp along in the beater for a little while longer and then, when you have no student loan debt, finish your emergency fund and start a car fund.

I talk to a lot of people your age who still have student loan debt. But you have the opportunity to punch its lights out in a hurry. If you pour on the coals, you should be able to save money and get a better car in just a few months!

We’ve always followed your plan and

taught her to do the same. When she asked the instructor if no credit score was as good as a high credit score, the instructor said no. He told the class the only way to buy a home without a high credit rating is by having a huge amount of assets or savings. I think I know your answer, but how do I explain this to an 18-year-old?

-Allison Dear Allison, Well, the first thing you explain is that college instructors — even tenured college professors — can be absolutely wrong sometimes.

A few years ago my daughter took a personal finance class in college, and on the first day the instructor went on a rant saying Dave Ramsey is stupid. He didn’t know I was her dad, but she went through the entire class and never said a word. When she called home and asked what she should do, we told her to take the class and give him the answers he wants on the tests. We reminded her that she’s just taking a class, and that doesn’t mean she has to form her life opinions around what that guy thinks.

Sit down with your daughter and gently explain in this instance her instructor doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. Explain to her you can get a home loan even if you have no credit score. People do it all the time. There are places like Churchill Mortgage that would be happy to give her an example of this process. It’s called manual underwriting. All you have to do is make a reasonable down payment, have two years at the same job, and provide two years of tax returns.

Unfriended -By Sheila Ripplinger I absolutely love December! The Christmas season has such a wonderful atmosphere about it that I wish it would last all year long! In reality though, Christmas should be shining in our hearts throughout the year!

Part of the reason I believe, that people are afraid to bring Christ along with them in their every day lives, is the fear of being insulted, persecuted, or falsely accused. When Jesus had presented the Beatitudes to the crowd while up on the mountainside, in Matthew 5, this is exactly what He told them to expect if they chose to follow Him. Jesus told them that they would be mocked, mistreated, shunned, and misunderstood by many.

Jesus also said while on that mountainside, ‘Let your light shine before men.’ It does not have a side note that says ‘only at Christmas time.’ This is a great reminder to those who strive to follow Him and yet face many injustices. This was Jesus’ life as He walked among us in human form. This is why He can say in Scripture that He knows exactly what we are going through no matter the trial.

Not everyone was Jesus’ friend.

Secular people today want to see Him as an unassertive buddy who will be there no matter what sin you are continuing to live in. He will be the nice guy that supports you and accepts you so that you are not offended. That is simply not the Jesus from the Bible. That is not why He came to this world to live among us and then be crucified on our behalf. He clearly spoke up against what was evil in God’s sight and clearly condemned the

religious hypocrites who were leading the people astray. He was not a wishy washy preacher that was afraid to offend His listeners.

Jesus is full of love, yes. However, He called out sin as sin and evil for evil.

He offended many and yes, He was unfriended by many! Why? Because the world was uncomfortable having light shine on their wickedness. Still the same today. Genuine Christ like love will turn some away for the very same reasons as Jesus experienced. God’s word is offensive. Hebrews 4:12~ ‘It is living and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges thoughts and attitudes of the heart.’

So should we be concerned about being ‘unfriended’? Not if we are being unfriended for the cause of Christ.

We should actually expect it. Jesus tells us in John 15:18&25 ‘that if the world hates us, keep in mind that it hated Him first.’ As long as we are being loving and truthful, we do not need to fret over being ‘unfriended.’

James 4:4~ ‘Friendship with the world is hatred toward God. Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.’

December 1, 2016: At 19:26 the Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a one vehicle roll-over crash on County Rd 2 near County Rd 11. Brittany Miron of rural Long Prairie was traveling west on County 2 when she lost control and rolled her 2001 Chevy Impala. Miron and her passenger were wearing seatbelts and not injured. The car received extensive damage.

December 4, 2016: At 04:56 Veronica Sarmiento was traveling southbound on State 28 near County Road 103 in rural Grey Eagle when she lost control of her vehicle and left the roadway. The vehicle, a 1999 Ford Expedition, then struck a road sign and came to rest in the west side ditch of State 28. Sarmiento was not injured. The vehicle was towed from the ditch by Shaggy’s Towing.

December 6, 2016: At 08:14 Zoe Biggs, 18, of Browerville was driving north on 331st Ave. south of County 104 near Burtrum in a 1995 Ford Explorer when she lost control on the ice covered road, the SUV went into the ditch and rolled. Biggs was wearing her seatbelt.

She was transported by the Long Prairie Ambulance to the Long Prairie Hospital.

Swanville Fire and Rescue also assisted at the scene.

Swanville City November 3, 2016 Public Hearing: 6:30 p.m. held in the Swanville Center on November 3, 2016. Members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, and Jay Bartkowicz. Mayor Lange opened the hearing stating the land being discussed tonight starts 250’ to the north at the corner of First Street and Springbrook Drive. This land would be rezoned from industrial to residential.

There will be surveying done with a possible six lots available for single home dwelling. The proposed lots would be approximately, width 125’x depth 114’. When discussion was over, Mayor Lange closed the public hearing meeting at 6:45 p.m.

Mayor Lange asked Jason Murray, representative from David Drown Assoc., to explain the TIF District and Bond estimates on the Berkey Avenue North project. After discussion with council, it was decided that Murray will get in contact with the Dally’s who are interested in building a possible two-four plex rental housing and get $3500.00 for a commitment deposit.

Council looked over and discussed the probable cost estimate of $130,000.00 that Mark Hallen, city engineer, wrote up for the Berkey Avenue North Project. This estimate included putting in a road, and extending water and sewer.

Council discussed rezoning the land at the corner of First Street and Springbrook Drive, 250’ to the north after the first 250’. After discussion, Norm Carlson made a motion to rezone the land to the north 250’ from Industrial to Residential.

Tony Maciej seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bill Johnson who owns the house at 509 DeGraff Avenue would like to restructure the old roof on the east side of the house and put a gable roof on. After discussion, Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to give a land use permit to Johnson to restructure the roof. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Allen, from Red’s Irish Pub, was present to ask permission from the council to host another street concert in 2017. Council did not see any problem with having another concert. The concert would probably take place on Saturday, August 12, 2017.

Mayor Lange handed out the 2017 budget to council. After discussion, it was decided to revisit at the next council meeting.

The final levy for 2017 was discussed. After discussion, Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to not raise the general service for 2017. The final levy for 2017 is set at general fund $73,500.00 and the debt service amount is set at $11,355.85 for a total levy amount of $84,855.85 Delinquent utility bills were looked at. Letters will be sent to the property owners with delinquent utilities and if the bills are not satisfied by November 21, 2015 that amount will be added to their property taxes payable in 2017.

Mayor Lange stated there will be an annual job review with the maintenance worker and clerk/treasurer before the next council meeting. Jim Molitor and Norm Carlson will conduct the review.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jay Bartkowicz made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The purpose of this meeting was to canvass the general election results. Council members looked over the voting results from Morrison County. Lange 139 votes; Write-in 10 Council members (elect 2): Norman A Carlson 137 votes; Write-ins 30 Sandra Lange was re-elected for Mayor for 2 years. Norman Carlson re-elected for Council member for 4 years.

Within the council member write-ins, Deb Woods and Jesse Hollermann are tied with 4 votes each.

A coin was tossed with the winner being Jesse Hollermann.

Hollermann will be contacted to see if he will take the council member position. If he does not accept, council will appoint a resident to take Jay Bartkowicz position on council.

With no more further business to discuss, Jim Molitor made a motion to adjourn. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor. Meeting adjourned 5:00 p.m.

Central Minnesota Credit Union Foundation is pleased to announce a donation made in the amount of $1,300 to the Coborn Cancer Center at CentraCare Health in St. Cloud, MN. The donation will help provide patients and their families with additional support before, during and after cancer treatment.

The donation was presented to Sonya Wieber, Coborn Cancer Center Director, on Tuesday, November 29th by Central Minnesota Credit Union members, Joyce Eveslage, Ryan Hinnenkamp, Marvin Sand, Joyce Klein and Ron Klein. All of these CMCU members have received or are receiving treatment at the Coborn Cancer Center.

October is the designated month for Breast Cancer Awareness. CMCU gave employees and members a chance to donate towards the cause by collecting funds throughout the month. Employees were given the opportunity to wear jeans to work in exchange for a donation towards the initiative. Members were also notified that CMCU was collecting funds to be donated towards local cancer centers. The total amount of funds donated was $2,000, which was split between the Coborn Cancer Center in St. Cloud, the Sanford Roger Maris Cancer Center in Fargo, and the Willmar Regional Cancer Center in Willmar.

Public Invited to Learn About Plans to Reconstruct and Redesign Highway 4 Through Lake Henry in 2018 Open house scheduled Dec. 8 Motorists and area residents who travel Highway 4 through Lake Henry are encouraged to attend an open house to learn about a proposed project that will reconstruct Highway 4 through downtown Lake Henry in 2018.

The open house will be held will be held Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Lake Henry City Hall.

Those attending the open house will be able to see the latest project layout showing the proposed design and learn details about the project, including how the project may affect traffic and adjacent properties. MnDOT staff will be available to answer questions.

The open house format is informal, and attendees may arrive at any time during open house hours.

The project as proposed will resurface the roadway and replace sidewalks, storm sewer and curb and gutter along Highway 4 in Lake Henry. The new design will reduce the roadway’s parking lane width by five feet on each side of the highway, and repurpose that space to improve accessibility and safety along

the roadway and provide a functional boulevard to protect utilities and provide space for snow storage.

A Prayer Funny

One Sunday morning at a small southern church, the new pastor called on one of his older deacons to lead in the opening prayer.

The deacon continued, “Lord, I hate lard.”

Now the pastor was totally perplexed.

The deacon continued, “Lord, I ain’t too crazy about plain flour. But after you mix ‘em all together and bake ‘em in a hot oven, I just love biscuits.”

By Pete Boulay, assistant state climatologist Q: Historically speaking, how often do we have a white Christmas in Minnesota?

A: Having a white Christmas is generally defined as having 1 inch of snow on the ground on Christmas Day. In the Twin Cities, this happens about 72 percent of the time. In northern Minnesota, the chance of a white Christmas is 90 percent or greater. In the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the Lake Superior Highlands, a white Christmas is almost guaranteed. The chances decrease to the south and west, down to around 60 percent in far southwestern Minnesota.
