“Well, here’s $10 for you,” said the gentleman. “Let me pass your hat and maybe some of these kind people will help you out too.”

More than 100 people dropped bills into the hat. The driver nodded to the retreating crowd and the benevolent gentleman and said, “That’s what I call a smart guy. He’s my boss.”

I value resourcefulness highly in my employees. Resourceful people can figure things out on their own. They find a way to make things work. They find solutions to problems using imaginative methods. They can use resources at their disposal to help them solve problems or overcome obstacles.

Resourcefulness seems to come naturally to some people. They aren’t about to give up just because the odds are stacked heavily against them.

Webster’s dictionary defines resourceful as “… able to deal promptly and effectively with problems, difficulties, etc.” Resourcefulness is a real asset for anyone trying to get the edge over the competition, whether it’s finding a job, keeping a job, making customers happy or landing a new account.

Resourceful people can think outside the box and visualize all the possible ways to achieve things. They are scrappy, inventive and driven to find a way to get what they need and want.

As one of my very favorite authors, Napoleon Hill, said: “A resourceful person will always make the opportunity fit his or her needs.”

Resourceful people can see the upside of down times. They are not willing to give up just because things get complicated. And here’s a news flash: They are not all geniuses. They just don’t accept defeat easily.

In sales a common problem is getting to know who the decision maker is and then contacting that person. Do you know anyone who knows that person? How can you get close to the people who know and influence that person?

In doing research for a speech recently, I was talking to a salesperson who said he found out who the decision maker was and waited in the lobby and followed him into the restroom. While they were washing their hands, he introduced himself and gave Mr. Decision Maker a quick commercial on their firm.

He got the business. The new customer was intrigued by the determination the salesperson demonstrated.

William Menninger, psychiatrist and co-founder of the Menninger Foundation, an internationally known center for treatment of behavioral disorders, offered this explanation: “The amount of satisfaction you get from life depends largely on your own ingenuity, selfsufficiency, and resourcefulness. People who wait around for life to supply their satisfaction usually find boredom instead.”

You must be thinking all the time. How can I maximize what I want to do? How can I get things done? How can I get the information I need? Be resourceful.

Perhaps the best feature of resourcefulness is that it doesn’t have to cost your company

any money. Using the brainpower already on the payroll is a great place to start. A company offered a reward of half of whatever savings a viable, creative cost-cutting measure would yield. Did they get any suggestions? You better believe it. And nearly all of them were fairly simple to implement. These folks had been hatching ideas for a long time, but the “We’ve always done it this way” mentality kept them from speaking up.

Resourcefulness doesn’t take long to develop. Observe children. They often find creative ways to get what they want, even at a very young age. And it’s not because they are so cute!

Timmy only had a quarter in his pocket when he approached the farmer and pointed to a tomato hanging lusciously from a vine.

“I’ll give you a quarter for it,” the boy offered.

“That kind brings 50 cents,” the farmer told him.

“How about this one,” Timmy asked, pointing to a smaller, greener and less tempting tomato.

The farmer nodded agreement, and Timmy sealed the deal by placing his quarter in the farmer’s hand. “I’ll pick it up in about a week.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Farm Treasures

Some of you have inherited an old set of farm buildings along with the treasures stored on shelves, in corners, in boxes and hidden by a layer of dust that made them unrecognizable until they were dusted off and examined.

Some of these old relics were still a puzzle after cleaning. Others caused you to say, “what was he saving this for?” At the time they were stacked in the corner, there was a reason for the item to be saved.

One of the things that appeared was an original corn planter. This thing was 1 by 4 boards about 3 feet long. It had hand grips on the outside, near the top. It had a hinge near the bottom, which allowed the two 1x4s to move in and out. It had a box attached to it which held about a quart of corn seed. The bottom end had two metal shovels that were inserted into the soil and by pushing the 1x4s together deposited a couple of corn seeds. As the planter was raised from the soil, the 1x4s were pulled apart and another couple of corn kernels fell to the bottom of the planter being ready to plant the next corn hill.

Another item occasionally found was a rather heavy roll of smooth wire that had a wire knot about every 3 feet. This wire was used to direct the human to keep a straight row and the knots showed where the next hill of corn was to be planted. The original corn planting was referred to as being checked, which meant that the corn in the row was 36 inches from it's closest hill and could be cultivated both with the row and across the row. Cultivating and possibly some work by hand pulling and hoeing was the only way to keep down the weeds.

Some farmers did what was called double cropping by planting rye in the corn field, which after the corn was cut, would grow a forage crop that was cut to make hay for the cattle and horses.

which needed to be removed to make a field.

This problem caused the farmers to try to get as much production out of the cleared land as possible.

The first actual cultivating machine was pulled by horses. I imagine that it was somewhat hard to use, since the horses probably stepped on some of the corn plants.

Cultivating across the rows of checked corn required a lot of additional direction change, since the cross rows were usually not as straight as the regular rows. This problem was created by the amount of tension the farmer applied to the guide wire. If he pulled hard on the wire, the planting knots could be to the right or left of the previous row.

One of the newer custom farming applications in early years was custom cultivating. There were a large number of tractors that were built during the 1930's. These machines were a replacement for the massive, lumbering giants that were built earlier. They were more attuned to the type of farming that the smaller 160 acre family farmsteads had at that time. They were narrower, easier to maneuver and easier to attach to many farm implements. They were used for custom cultivating of corn due to speed and ability to cultivate around most of the corn plants, thereby increasing final yields. Not only that, but they traveled much faster on the roads.

Many of these tractors are still in use today, after almost 100 years.

I know I am not alone. Many of you are more broken than I am, and yet you are living examples of God’s Grace. He loves us and allows us to live and share His story with those who don’t know Him. Isaiah 46:4 says, “Even in your old age and gray hairs, I am he, I am he who will carry you; I will sustain you, and I will rescue you.” Encouraging words for many in this world who are discouraged. Another… Proverbs 16:31 “Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.”

Why do you think the Bible tells us that old age is something to aspire to? In my unqualified opinion, it is because many feel the same as I do, inadequate. But God wants us to keep going! Keep getting up in the morning and do what God has called you to.

My brother retired a couple years ago and started volunteering at a Bible camp. He has “Sowers” (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready – retired volunteers with RV’s) come and work.

He told me just the other day that one couple that comes to help are into their eighties. Now, I need to say here, it does not matter how old you are. If you have breath, continue doing God’s work. One more scripture to share, one of my favorites, Isaiah 40:28-30 “Do you not know?

Marcella A. Blenker

Marcella A. “Marcy” Blenker, age 89, of Melrose, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 3, 2023, surrounded by her family at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Monday, December 11, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery. The Mass will be livestreamed and can be viewed on YouTube channel: Church of St. Mary Melrose.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Monday at the church in Melrose.

Marcy was born September 28, 1934 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Martin and Mary (Gappa) Zinniel. She was united in marriage to Joseph Blenker on October 18, 1955 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis. She was a homemaker and also worked at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose. Marcy enjoyed family gatherings with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and Bingo.

She thoroughly enjoyed life.

Marcy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her children, Roger Blenker, Carol (Don) Zirbes, Mary (Jeff) Philippi, Linda (Ken) Unger, Karen (Arlan) Wolbeck, Alice Henifin, and Michael (Jacie) Blenker; daughter-in-law, Kathy Blenker; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Tressie Vogel; and sisters-in-law, Tudy Zinniel, MaryAnn Zinniel, and Rosie Hinnenkamp.

Marcy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe; sons, Ronnie Blenker and Eddie Blenker; son-in-law, Kevin Henifin; grandsons, Justin Zirbes and Joshua Zirbes; brothers, Ed Zinniel, Everett Zinniel, and Virgil Zinniel; sister-in-law, Ann Zinniel; and brother-in-law, Elmer Hinnenkamp.

Memorials are preferred.

Entombment was in the parish cemetery.

Eileen passed away on December 3, 2023 at Mother of Mercy Campus, Albany, surrounded by her loving family. Arrangements

by Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes, Albany, MN. Eileen was born on March 19, 1933, to Stephen and Anna (Lang) Vos. Eileen skipped seventh grade and graduated a year ahead of her class, from Albany Senior High School in 1950. She worked with her sister Mona in the Twin Cities as a housekeeper before marrying Ervin Zeis on August 24, 1954, at the St. Anthony Catholic Church. The couple lived in St. Cloud for five years, before moving back to the Zeis farm in 1960. Eileen raised 4 children in the old farmhouse that was originally a log cabin, her only demand was indoor plumbing. Eileen cared for her mother and father, as well as her mother and father-in-law as they grew older. She was an exceptional caregiver and spent her time helping with her grandkids, which gave her joy. Eileen was a devout Catholic and sent up many prayers for her family, along with many extra prayers she requested from the sisters at the Poor Clare's Monastery. Eileen was well known for her famous potato salad, which she shared far and wide. The recipe lives on. She loved animals, especially her dogs Lady and Lady 2. In addition to working hard on the family farm, Eileen maintained her home and loved to sew for her family. In her later years, Eileen kept up the farmyard and could often be seen in her sun hat, chopping weeds by hand, or riding her John Deere lawn mower.

Eileen liked to say that a deep sense of faith and a good sense of humor will take you a long, long way. Eileen will be missed by her family.

Eileen is survived by her children, Daniel Zeis, Albany, Joan Bredeck, Albany, Carol (Rich) Rothstein Albany, & Patrick (Jena) Zeis Albany, six grandchildren, Megan (Mat) Euteneuer, John (Kyra) Bredeck, Maria (Brady) Winkels, Shalon (Nate) Ronning, Tyler (Ashley) Rothstein, & Amanda (Brad) Zeis-Ebert, 12 great-grandchildren, Gracen & Colten Euteneuer, Waylon Winkels, Aiden, Tristan, Keeley & Nicodemus Bredeck, Kepler, Makell, & Crosby Ronning, Huxley & Marley Rothstein, siblings, Mona (Jerry) Zeis, Harriet Jonas, Betty HolthausYoung, & Patty (Edmund) Eggert.

Betty (Welle) Hennen

Betty (Welle) Hennen passed away at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta while surrounded by family on Tuesday November 28th, 2023.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, December 4, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Interment was in the

parish cemetery.

Betty was born on June 16th, 1939 in the back room of the Pioneer Inn in Freeport to Erwin and Alma Welle. After a year, the family moved to Meier Grove where Betty spent her childhood.

Thanks to then-Melrose school superintendent Norb Weiss, she won first place in a writing contest, which landed her a job at Brown and Bigelow in St. Paul, MN after her 1957 high school graduation.

Betty met Tom Hennen on a blind date when he was on a furlough from the Navy. After much letter writing, they married August 16, 1958, and she moved to Freeport because Tom worked with his father in the lumberyard. Betty’s mother-inlaw, Lid, ensured Betty could pursue a career in hairdressing after attending the St. Cloud Beauty College. In 1959, Betty opened Freeport Beauty Shop, and steadily gained a large customer base.

What was said in her shop, stayed in her shop. In a 2017 newspaper article, she said her shop was “like a confessional. [Her clients] would tell [her] things they wouldn’t tell their best friends.” She loved her customers. She officially “retired” in May of 2023.

Betty and Tom were the proud parents of five children, all of which continued living within 30 miles of their childhood home, a testament to their parents. The family was blessed with many memories of camping, tubing down the Apple River, water skiing, Boy Scouting, annual vacations to Boyd Lodge, and weekends at the family cabin on Little Birch Lake.

Betty had a strong faith. She was an active member of her community, including Sacred Heart Church, serving as a Eucharistic Minister as well as contributing to the choir. She was a member of the Christian Mothers, Catholic Order of Foresters, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 101, and a member of the Swany White women’s bowling team. Her spirits remained high. As she told the staff at Quiet Oaks upon her arrival, she was glad to be there because she “was on the trip of a lifetime.”

She was ready to finally meet her Savior and spend Christmas with him and her husband Tom. Betty is survived by her children, Tim (Stephanie) of Freeport MN, Mike (Jennifer) of St. Anna MN, John of Freeport MN, Mary (Graeme) Mahler of St. Cloud MN, Jane (Dick) Austing of St. Rosa MN. Other survivors include her sister Shirley Ebensteiner of Sauk Centre, MN and eight grandchildren Steven, Bryan, Adrianna, Sydney, Grayson, Kayla, Whitney, Tommy and four great grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and mother/father-in-law.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Freeport.

Steven R. “Steve” Alter

Steven R. “Steve” Alter, age 66 of Long Prairie, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 27, 2023 at the CentraCare Long Prairie Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 9 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Steven Reid Alter was born February 12, 1957 in Princeton, Minnesota to Reid, Jr. and Audree (Larson) Alter. He graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1975. Steve started his schooling at Alexandria Technical College. He furthered his education at Dunwoody Institute and graduated at the top of his class and with honors in 1978.

After graduation he moved to Cavalier, North Dakota where he started his first business venture, but after three years, moved back to the Long Prairie area. Steve worked in his home area for several other companies until 2002 when he started his own company, East Lake HVAC-R. In 2005, he proudly changed the name to “Alter HVAC-R LLC” and for the next 18 years provided personal service to his clients.

Steve’s favorite things in life started with spending time with family and friends, Bar-BQueing in the back yard. Snowmobile racing, hunting, and fishing were also some of his past times if he could work them in.

Steve’s laughter, generous and loving spirit will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and loyal customers. He treated everyone like family.

Survivors include his significant other, Lois Raile of Long Prairie; father, Reid S. Alter, Jr. of Sauk Centre; sister, Christine Zitur of Sauk Rapids; nephew, Matthew S. Osterholt (Stacey) of Sartell; niece, Laura (Osterholt) Hedlund (Cole) of Sauk Rapids; and many loving relatives and friends.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Audree A. Alter on September 2, 2022; and brother-in-law, Thomas R. Zitur on October 17, 2023.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral and Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Avon, MN for Susan “Sue” Lemke, age 64, who died Wednesday in an accident.

Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Albany

(Farming Township).

Sue was born in St. Cloud, MN to Marvin and Marlene (Lutgen) Miller. She married Brian Lemke August 28, 1982, in St. Peter’s Church, St. Cloud, MN. LLC Sue worked for Kids Company in Avon Large Tree Trimming & Removal for many years. She decided to retire in 2021 to spend more time with family. Sue was a Lot Clearing • Woods Cleaning member of Avon Women of Today, Over the FALL TRIMMING for Healthy Trees Hill Club, St. Benedict Catholic Church, and Christian Women. She dedicated most of her life to community service and caring for others; including the Avon Food Shelf.

Happy 105th birthday to Lorraine Doroff, a resident at Upsala Senior Living. She is a WWII Veteran who celebrated her “second” Golden Birthday on December 5th, 2023.

David G. Holmen, 87 year old resident of Burtrum, MN, passed away Sunday, December 3, 2023, at his residence. A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, at 11:00 A.M., at Community Covenant Church in Upsala, MN, with Pastor Steve We i h s m a n n officiating. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 10:00-11:00 A.M. at the church prior to the funeral. Caring for David and his family is the Shelley Funeral Chapel.

David George Holmen was born on July 29, 1936 in Little Falls, MN to the late George and Olive (Johnson) Holmen. He graduated from Upsala High School in 1954 and then joined the Navy for two years. Dave was honorably discharged on December 26, 1962.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Hedin on February 2, 1989 at the courthouse in Little Falls. For 33 years Dave and Shirley owned and operated Cedar Pine Strawberry Farm in Upsala. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed fishing and earlier in his years liked hunting, gardening and cutting wood.

Dave is survived by his wife, Shirley Holmen; daughter, Sheryl Lall (Jerry) Hitt; stepson, Joe (Tina) Steuck; sisters-in-law, Fran Holmen and Carolyn Holmen; grandchildren, Alyssa and Brandon Lall, Casey Baker, Joseph Steuck and Hunter Steuck; many nieces and nephews; and many honorary adopted grandchildren.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, George and Olive Holmen; brothers, Dennis, James and Leonard and sister, Jeanette Pangrac.

Jerry was born June 4, 1967 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to George and Dorothy (Salzer) Biniek. He was a 1985 graduate of Holdingford High School. Jerry married Susan R. Kostreba on June 20, 1992 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. The couple together with their children farmed near Avon.

Jerry was a member of St. Columbkille Parish.

Jerry enjoyed spending time with his buddies, he was always willing to help out his neighbors, he loved having his grandchildren with him at the farm.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Jake (Abby Lechner) of Holdingford, Samantha (Ryan) Gerads of Upsala and Kenneth of Avon; five grandchildren, Calvin, Krista, Adam, Zachary and Nora; brothers, and sisters, Ann (Ernest) Rudnicki of Avon, Lois (Dale) Henrich of Morris, Marian (Dan) Skwira of Holdingford, Joan Grebinowski of Holdingford, Tom (Jackie) of Avon and David of Avon; and many nieces and nephews.

-Take care, the Motor Medics Dear Motor Medics, I am in need of a third set of intake gaskets on my car in an eight-year period. I now have 150,000 miles on my car and the first set went out at 40,000. I have searched the internet and found countless people with the same engine style in their cars and vans with the same issue. How can the manufacturer have so many failures out there and not have a recall on them? I have owned other cars with recalls for things that weren’t even broken, and I could not find anyone else with the issue, these gaskets are almost an epidemic with no recall. Why don’t they recall them?

Dear John, I know what you mean. I too own a car that I’ve had to pay for repairs on myself many times over and I felt the parts should have been designed better. For a recall to be issued complaints must be filed with the government safety office and then they are investigated to determine if they are safety related which could cause consumer harm. Recalls are not usually issued if there is no safety concern. A manufacturer does not have to repair a vehicle out of its warranty period unless a repair is deemed to be a safety hazard and a recall has been started. On occasion, some manufacturers have extended warranty coverage as a good faith measure to retain customers.

Burnhamville Township • October 31, 2023 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held October 31, 2023 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors Bruce Johnson and Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener. Supervisor Joe Muellner was absent. Also present was Erv Herdering, The minutes from the regular meeting of September 26, 2023 were approved on a motion

by Sup. Johnson and second by Sup. Berscheit.

Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letters from Todd County Planning and Zoning, which township already approved variance, and notice of no wetland issues with that variance, taxes received, notice of Presidential Nominating Primary to be held on March 5, 2024, road maintenance products ad and notice of Long Prairie fire call in our area.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 6521 through 6540 totaling $28,439.45. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion.

In the road report since we received nice rain the contractor will blade the roads thoroughly before winter freeze up. The Dunlin Road buffer is done and we paid the bill. We will also watch for funding reimbursement from Todd County.

Nothing new on Emerald Trail improvements.

The Treasurer’s report shows balance of $30,670.62. Report approved on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and second by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:31 p.m. on a motion by Sup. Berscheit and a second by Sup. Johnson. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at 7 pm in the Burtrum Community Center.

Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk Swanville City • November 8, 2023 A Public Hearing took place Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 6:45 p.m. to hear input from residents about the variance/building permit for Nilson Hardware to add onto the existing shed behind store. Council present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, John Dragseth and Jim Molitor. Also present, Jason, Jim and James Dickinson, Bryan Allen, and Lonny Hutchins.

Mayor Lange opened the Public Hearing and explained the plans for the addition and where it will be located. There was no discussion and no one had a problem with the plans. Mayor Lange then closed the Hearing and opened the regular council meeting.

The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Norm Carlson, Tony Maciej, John Dragseth and Jim Molitor. Also present: Jason, Bryan Allen, Terry Lanoue, Ryan Odden, Josiah Rostad, Angie & Brent VanRisseghem, and Lonny Hutchins. The meeting was recorded for the Morrison County Record.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Tuesday, October 3, 2023 was reviewed. A motion was made by Tony Maciej to approve the minutes. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Building/Variance permit were looked at for Nilson Hardware 20’x36’ addition. Jim Molitor made a motion to give the Hardware store a variance and building permit with the condition that gutters must be directing the run off of the building onto the store property. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Bryan Allen was present to go over the building permit he received for his property at 304 DeGraff. Instead of laying ce-

ment Allen wants to build a wooded deck. After discussion, council okayed the wooden deck.

Swanville School would like to add two chillers with a fence around for the new ventilation system. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the permit for the School. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Ryan Odden and Josiah Rostad, Moore Engineering, was present to go over options to pave the roads in the new Berkey 1st Addition or leave as gravel until homes are built. Odden is the new project manager for the water project and road construction work. Rostad is the lead designer of the project. The engineers also went over the project contract with council. After discussion, Norm Carlson made a motion to sign the contract with Moore Engineering. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The city attorney had already looked over the contract. Norm Carlson made a motion to accept Task Order #3 with the amendment to add tar, curb and gutter in the Berkey First Addition plans and have that completion within three years from the time the money is borrowed. Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Terry Lanoue, Long Prairie Sanitation, was present to ask if the council would consider a five-year extension on the city’s refuse and recycling contract which will be expiring May 31, 2024. Lanoue stated there will be no change in the fees at this time but should Morrison County Landfill raise their rates he would return to the council with a request for a change in fees. Jim Molitor made a motion to go with Long Prairie Sanitation and a five-year extension for refuse and recycling. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Angie VanRisseghem, Swanville Insurance, was present to go over the city annual contract renewal policy. There was discussion on the values of the buildings. Mayor Lange made a motion to not wave the torte limit. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Delinquent utility bills were looked at by council. In November any delinquent utility can be added to the property owner’s property taxes.

Letters will be sent out to the owners and if the bill is not paid in full by November 27, 2023 the amount will be added to the property taxes payable in 2024.

City maintenance, Lonny, requested to put up some no parking signs on 5th and 6th Streets.

This will accommodate some space for the snow plow and semis to get through.

Council would like to recognize Josie Larum and Mike Loxterkamp for bringing their animals

by Lake Pepin during the summer.

Council discussed possibly changing the time and date of the council meetings. Tabled for now.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Tony Maciej made a motion to approve the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. in the Swanville Center.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Tony Maciej to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:30 p.m.

Stearns Co. Sheriff’s Office

Fatal Crash: November 29, 2023: At approximately 9:47 A.M., the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash on County Road 9, just east of County Road 156 in Collegeville Township. This location is approximately 2 miles southwest of Avon.

When Stearns County Deputies and the Avon Police Department arrived on scene, they observed a 2007 Buick Lacrosse and a 1993 Ford work truck that were involved in the crash. Susan Lemke, 64, of Avon, had been operating the Lacrosse and Austin Weaver, 31, of Royalton, had been operating the Ford truck. Lemke was pinned in her vehicle and was extricated by the Avon Fire Department.

The roads were frost covered and slippery at the time of the crash.

The investigation revealed that Weaver was traveling southbound on County Road 9 driving the Ford work truck pulling a trailer.

Lemke was driving the Buick Lacrosse northeast on County Road 9 approaching a curve to the right at County Road 156. Lemke lost control of the vehicle, due to road conditions, while maneuvering around the curve. Lemke’s vehicle collided head-on with Weaver’s vehicle. Weaver’s vehicle went into the north ditch and Lemke’s vehicle remained on the road and traveled about 40 yards further from the crash site.

Deputies, officers, and rescue personnel on the scene provided life-saving measures to Lemke. Ultimately, Lemke was pronounced deceased at the scene. Paramedics from Mayo Ambulance treated Weaver for his injuries on the scene.

The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with crash reconstruction.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Avon Fire Department, Albany Fire Department, Avon Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, North Air Care, and Mayo Ambulance Service.

Crash: December 2, 2023: At approximately 1:25 am, their office received a report of a one-vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of 70th Avenue and 20th Street, two miles east of Upsala, MN in Elmdale Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old juvenile male from of Albany, MN was traveling west on 20th Street. The driver lost control of the vehicle, went in the ditch and hit a tree. The 17-year-old juvenile male was transported to St. Cloud Hospital by Mayo Clinic Ambulance with unknown injuries. This case is under investigation.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Upsala Fire Department, Upsala First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Stearns Electric Returns Captial Credits

Stearns Electric Association is excited to announce it has returned $2.125 million in Capital Credits to our members.

“As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, Stearns Electric is jointly owned by our member-consumers, or electricity customers,” Stearns Electric CEO Matt O’Shea explained. “Unlike investor-owned utilities, which are designed to make a profit for shareholders, Stearns Electric refunds capital (money), above the cost of operations, to our member-consumers in the form of Capital Credits.”

In September 2023, the Stearns Electric Association Board of Directors authorized a $1.175 million general retirement of Cooperative Capital Credits to its members. These funds are combined with the $950,000 Generation and Transmission (G&T) Capital Credits that were returned to Stearns Electric from its wholesale power provider Great River Energy.

Eligible member-consumers will receive Capital Credit checks in early December totaling $2.125 million. If your residence is serviced by Stearns Electric Association, you may receive money back from the Cooperative if you purchased electricity during the following years: 2001, 2002 and/or 2018-2022 (Cooperative Capital Credits) 1989-1994 (G&T Capital Credits) Retired Capital Credit amounts of less than $10 are held until additional Capital Credits are retired.

How does the Capital Credit process work?

Stearns Electric keeps track of how much electricity members use throughout the year.

At the end of the year, the Cooperative completes financial matters and determines whether there are excess revenues (margins).

Stearns Electric allocates the margin to members as Capital Credits, based upon their usage of electricity during the year.

In the meantime, margins are used by the Cooperative for operating capital, necessary reserves, storm damage and other expenses.

When Stearns Electric’s financial condition permits, the Board of Directors decides to retire, or pay, the Capital Credits for previous years.

Stearns Electric reminds current and former member-consumers to provide an updated forwarding address to the Cooperative to ensure that it has valid addresses to send the Capital Credits.
