Look for these traits in future leaders -By Harvey Mackay I don’t care if you’re the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, a small business owner or a manager or supervisor; you are only as good as the people around you. In other words, it’s important to surround yourself with success-oriented people.

When hiring, always try to pick future leaders. They may not be easy to recognize, but they’re crucial to an organization that wants to be innovative and intrapreneurial. Here’s a list of factors that can help you identify and develop potential leaders on your staff:

Look for employees who communicate well, delegate effectively and build strong personal relationships with their coworkers, managers and customers.

They’re committed to their own personal success, of course, but they’re also dedicated to helping other people.

• Self-determination.

Intrapreneurial employees value their freedom and autonomy. They like being their own boss as much as possible, as long as they’re doing something they enjoy. Allow employees to make their own decisions as long as they’re moving firmly toward your organization’s objectives.

• Planning skills. You want employees who look beyond today’s tasks, who can focus on the long term as well as the short. They’re good at strategizing and weighing options, and at making decisions that minimize risk and maximize opportunity.

• Curiosity. Most great ideas start with simple questions: “What if I did this? Why does that happen?” Listen to employees’ questions to spot those who are interested in solving problems and learning more about how things work.

• Comfort with technology. Every good leader or potential leader stays on top of the tools that can mean success or failure. He or she isn’t afraid to use whatever’s available - as long as it works.

• Drive for action. Focus on employees who take initiative without

waiting until conditions are perfect.

They like to try things quickly, experiment and then move on to the next challenge. They’re also not discouraged by setbacks.

Those are traits that employees bring to the job. Now it’s up to you to help them develop the skills that will enable them use those traits most effectively.

First and foremost, you need to be a role model. People will learn much more from your actions than from anything you say. If you want to be an effective manager, you must be comfortable knowing that your employees might be smarter, more tech savvy or have new ways of doing business. Try to remember your early career and what you did to prove yourself. Give them enough latitude to develop their own style, but be ready to offer a guiding hand when necessary.

Teach the importance of networking. Learning how to make contacts is a necessary skill for every leader. Stress the importance of both internal and external networks.

I frequently preach, “If I had to name the single characteristic shared by all the truly successful people I’ve met over a lifetime, I’d say it is the ability to create and nurture a network of contacts.”

Share the value of perspective.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The Farm

In the late 1920’s, my grandparents started farming in Todd county.

The farm was 120 acres of what is some of the most difficult land to farm.

The hills were stony gravel and the low parts of the fields would accumulate water. So in the dry years there was a small crop on the hills and in the wet years there was no crop in the low land. I guess the advantage was that no matter what the weather conditions, there would be some form of harvest.

In 1929 there was a severe thunder storm and lightning struck the barn.

There were 9 cows in the barn and all were being milked as the lightning struck. The people doing the milking along with 2 of the cows were able to escape. It was said that fire spread through the barn as though the barn was soaked in kerosene. A total loss.

A new barn had to be erected. It was an unusual barn, in that the walls were concrete blocks with blocks extending to the peak on the ends. There was also a block silo built inside of the barn, extending out of the roof on the south side. When I asked why the silo was built into the barn, I was told that it was big enough to hold all the silage that was needed and that the silage wasn’t suppose to freeze in the winter.

For those of us who remember breaking silage loose with a pick axe and grub-hoe in the winter, having silage that was not frozen was really

special. The silo in the barn kept the frost away on the side toward the barn, but the side which was in contact with the outside of the barn still froze. In the later part of the winter about a third of the wall had about 2 feet of frozen silage extending up about 12 feet. No-one was ever unlucky enough to be in the silo when the frost released the silage from the wall and it all came down in a big boom.

In the years that followed there were a few changes to the farming operation.

The biggest change was in the feeding of the young stock. Previously we concentrated on raising beef breeds, since they were what the meat markets were asking for. We discovered that raising Holstein steers were better suited for our operation. The Holstein is better adapted to pasture and roughage than the beef breeds. Since our farm did a better job of producing hay and silage, they were better fitted for our operation. The Holstein’s value per pound was less than the beef breeds, but we could produce a pound of Holstein for half of the cost of the beef breeds. The sale price per pound of Holstein was about 10% less than the beef breeds.

My grandfather retired from the farm when he was in his later 70’s and my dad retired at age 65. Both experienced a period of adjustment to become accustomed to not getting up at 5 A.M. My dad and mother enjoyed gardening and traveling in their retirement.

December 1, 2017: At 16:01 there was a one vehicle rollover on Ascot Road near the intersection of County Road 47. Alexandra Hanson Roe of Melrose lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Equinox and rolled the vehicle on Ascot Road. The vehicle was towed from the scene. Roe was wearing her seatbelt and did not receive any injuries.

December 2, 2017: At 19:24 hours, a car deer accident occurred near the intersection of County 2 and 241st Ave. in rural Grey Eagle. 54 year old Gregory Cipala, rural Sauk Centre, called to report that he struck a deer on County 2 while driving westbound in his Ford truck. Gregory was not injured and the truck received moderate damage to the front end.

December 4, 2017: At 05:57 it was reported that there where several mail boxes damaged south of Grey Eagle on Angler Drive by Birch Lake.

December 4, 2017: At 08:20 Loren Tank reported that his fish house had been broken into and set on fire on Fairy Lake. The incident happened around 19:00 on 12-03-2017.

challenge arises, or conversely, when you have had the biggest success of your career. Emotions have a place, but not in business decisions. As I like to say, “Make decisions with your heart and you’ll end up with heart disease.”

Insist on respect: for authority, for co-workers and for self. Good leaders treat people like people, not property.

Successful leaders won’t stoop to doing deeds that go against their principles just to make a buck. Good leaders have standards that cannot be compromised because it would destroy their selfrespect.

Remind them constantly: Cream doesn’t rise to the top; it works its way up. There is no substitute for hard work. When employees see you working harder than they do, you are reinforcing that a dedicated work ethic is a necessary characteristic of a good leader.

Instill confidence. Give credit where it is due. Encourage employees to take charge of projects that will allow them to take appropriate risks and take responsibility for outcomes.

Obituaries Edward “Eddie” Katzner

Services celebrating the life of Edward “Eddie” Katzner, age 67 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Friday, December 8, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albany.

Burial will be in Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery in Albany.

Eddie died Friday at the Paynesville Hospital. There will be a

visitation after 10:00 AM, Friday at the church in Albany. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home.

Eddie was born March 21, 1950 in Albany to Frank and Ruth (Christen) Katzner. He grew up on and farmed the family farm in Albany. He loved to eat breakfast at the Sauk Center Truck Stop and he enjoyed going to church breakfasts on Sundays. He is a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albany and the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church in Sauk Center.

Eddie is survived by many close friends and his dog, “Pups.”

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Edward R. “Eddie” Middendorf

E d w a r d R. “Eddie” Middendorf, age 79 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 7 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Edward Robert Middendorf was born May 22, 1938 in Melrose, Minnesota to Henry and Loretta (Toenyan) Middendorf.

He married LouAnn Schlicht on October 18, 1958 in Melrose. They later divorced, and on July 10, 1990, Eddie married Victoria Schmidt in Melrose. He worked as plant manager at Jennie-O Foods in Melrose for 33 years.

During his retirement, he enjoyed taking care of his grandchildren, fishing, camping, and visiting with people all around town.

Agnes G. Job, age 83 of Freeport, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Sunday, December 3, 2017 surrounded by her family at her home in Freeport, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 8 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Freeport. Goldenaires Senior Citizens, Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5 p.m.

Agnes Gertrude Fleischhacker was born October 7, 1934 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frederick and Appolonia (Wolbeck) Fleischhacker.

She married Edward Job on June 6, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

Agnes was a homemaker; raising their nine children. Agnes and Ed farmed south of Freeport, and in 1999 they moved to town.

Agnes worked for the Foster Grandparent Program for 20 years and was known to many as “Grandma Agnes.”

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Christian Women, and Catholic United Financial #101. Agnes enjoyed playing cards, bowling, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and square dancing.

She especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. Her sense of humor and smile will be missed by all.

Survivors include her husband, Edward “Ed” Job of Freeport; children, Elmer (Kristal) Job of Freeport, Roger (Carol) Job of Freeport, Leroy Job of Clear Lake, Bertha (Don) Hartung of Melrose, Linus (Tracy) Job of Altoona, WI, Kevin (Marianne O’Malley) Job of Hugo, Donald Job of Freeport, and Nancy (Bob) Middendorf of Sauk Centre; 29 grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; sister, Christine (Leander) Kalthoff of Roscoe; brothers, Lawrence Fleischhacker of Paynesville, and Benedict (Ione) Fleischhacker of Freeport; and sisterin-law, Anna May Fleischhacker of Albany.

Frances A. “Fran” Schreifels, age 89 of Melrose, passed away peacefully after a short battle with congestive heart failure on Sunday, December 3, 2017 surrounded by her family at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Saturday, December 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating, Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Frances Anna Barthel was born March 8, 1928 in Paynesville, Minnesota to Mathias and Johanna (Buettner) Barthel. She married Marcellus “Marc” Schreifels on October 16, 1951 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. She worked at the Produce in Melrose, presently known as Jennie-O Foods, Cold Spring Brewery, waitressed at the Albany Café, and was involved with VFW

Auxiliary functions. Her most important job was being a homemaker and raising her three children.

Fran enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, baking, canning, card playing, and most of all, dancing. She was a sun worshiper, but was not an early riser. However, she would be out until dusk working the earth in her garden pulling weeds and meticulously maintaining her yard. She was artistic and a perfectionist in everything she did.

Fran was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

Survivors include her partner, Leo Janssen of Richmond; children, Marlene “Molly” (Gene) Schneider of Melrose, Karen Schreifels of Crystal, and Judy “Mutz” Schreifels of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Justin (Erin) Schneider and Lindsey Schneider; two great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, MaryAnn Barthel-Scott and Arlene Barthel; and brother-in-law, Hank Middendorf.

Fran was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marcellus “Marc” Schreifels on March 19, 1987; grandson, Cahil Jon Schneider; brothers and sisters, Lorraine Schreifels, Kathleen Middendorf, Donald Barthel, Allen Barthel, and Robert Barthel; and brother-in-law, Vic Schreifels.

Memorials are preferred to the Cahil Schneider Memorial Fund at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital.

Piano Dedication Concert at GE UMC

By Robert Kutter Zhiyu and Eric Bigalke will perform a piano dedication concert at Grey Eagle United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 16 at 2:30 p.m. Works at the organ, piano and piano four-hands are include in the concert.

The piano repertoire will include music by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and a few Christmas carols arranged for piano four-hands.

For organ repertoire, Eric will play Bach chorale preludes from the Leipzig Chorales; typically played for Advent.

The 5’3” Cristofori piano was a gift to the church from Dr. John and Corrine Vener of Grey Eagle.

The concert is free and open to the public. A time to meet and greet will follow in the fellowship hall.

The church is located two miles south of Grey Eagle at the intersection of Todd County Roads #2 and #47 or 30422 County 2.

Dr. Eric Bigalke is a native of Little Falls, and began studying music there at an early age, with Sr. Bernadine at the St. Francis Music Center, and with Helen Pikal, of St. Mary’s Church. He was employed as a part-time organist at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls by the age of eleven. He earned a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls,

a master’s degree in piano performance from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in organ performance and music theory from the University of Minnesota, and Associateship in the American Guild of Organists.

Since his first position as an organist in Little Falls, Dr. Bigalke has continued to be employed by the church, around the country, and around the world. He is currently Music Minister at St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, in White Bear Lake, and Chapel Musician at Breck School, in Golden Valley, and also maintains a growing private teaching studio. He and his wife, Dr. Zhiyu Wang, live in Minneapolis.

Dr. Zhiyu Wang is from Jilin Province, in China. As a young girl, she took piano lessons at Shenyang Conservatory of Music, in the neighboring province, and eventually attended Shenyang Conservatory to study piano for middle school and high school. She earned her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Central Conservatory of Music, in Beijing, which is the most competitive and prestigious music institute in China, and also earned her master’s degree in piano performance from Central Conservatory.

Upon completing her studies in China, she attended the University of Minnesota with a fellowship, and earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and piano pedagogy. Dr. Wang is currently on the faculty of Yinghua Academy Conservatory of Music, in Minneapolis, and active as a recitalist and pedagogue.

Remember, the more you put toward debt, the faster it goes away.

For the time being, I want you to remain passionate about getting out of debt. Your thought process needs to be, “Wow, I got a new job making more money. I can get out of debt even quicker!”

Again, I’m okay with you adjusting a bit that first month and having a little fun to celebrate your good fortune. But after that, I want you to turn around and attack that debt with even more intensity than before. Then, once you’re out of debt, you can celebrate that with something a lot nicer.

to get as much as they can on a bad, late debt. I’ve seen numerous situations where collectors have taken more than the agreed-upon amount from someone’s account once they gained access. To be fair, the collection business does have a few good people in it. But it also has those who will lie and make threats.

If you’re doing something like scheduling utility payments to come through your debit card or out of your personal checking account, that’s perfectly fine. But there are much safer ways to handle situations with debt collectors. You can send a money order overnight, or wire the cash to them. You can also send a cashier’s check. Some folks have even used pre-paid debit cards that aren’t attached to any of their accounts.

The pre-paid debit card isn’t my favorite way to handle these things, but it’s a lot better than giving a dishonest collector the opportunity to really mess you up!

Not long ago a student came into my office and asked, “Dr. Guido, will you do a favor for me?”

Without knowing what favor the student wanted, it was obvious that I had a certain amount of power over him and could do something for him that he could not do for himself. He literally was at my mercy.

Moses concluded Psalm 90 with a gracious reminder of God’s power and our need to work for His favor. “May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon

us,” he wrote. And then he described how we could know that God’s favor was on our work: God Himself would establish the work of our hands. “Establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands.” When Moses added the “for us” he underlined the fact that God Himself is the one who established our work, not us. Whatever we do is temporary. Whatever God does through us is eternal.

How, then, can we work with God to establish works that are eternal? Paul gives us a clear answer: “Stand firm. Let nothing disturb you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

But just what is “the work of the Lord?” we ask.

Jesus answered that: “Love the Lord Your God with all your heart - and love your neighbor as yourself.” And “who is my neighbor” someone asked? His answer: “Anyone who has a spiritual, emotional or physical need.”

It is difficult to go from one place to another without seeing someone who has some need. Our work? Meet it.

What Is Christmas All About?

By John Young As we near the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, one hear’s the phrase, “what Christmas is all about” in conversations. Typically, this statement comes out after we have been shopping for hours and have exhausted the ‘what do they need?” or the “what can they use?” questions. We are tired, cranky, and looking for a good reason to skip the gift hunt and choose an easier course under the name of getting back to the meaning of Christmas!

Christmas, as it has come to be known today, is a relatively new and far from what many think it looked like historically. The tradition of gift-giving and celebration is from the pagan custom of celebrating the winter solstice which in Europe happens in December.

The winter solstice was celebrated in ancient Rome with gift giving during the Saturnalia holiday which took place in December.

The early celebrations were less about family and more about what we would consider a party today. Drunkenness and poor behavior was quite common and was looked down on by the early Christian church.

Christianity became increasingly widespread in the Roman lands in the second, third and fourth century. Around the year 336 AD, Church officials chose the date of December 25th to become the day to celebrate Jesus’s birth. The actual date is unknown, and scholars tend to point to a spring or late fall birthdate over December 25th. They chose the 25th to take the focus away from the drunken parties of Saturnalia and focus on the coming Christ bringing the light to a dark world on the darkest day of the year. With the celebration evolving from a celebration of the shortest day of the year to the birth of Christ, the tradition of gift giving was reinterpreted and tied to the story of three Magi giving gifts to baby Jesus.

In the early years, the Christmas celebration was overshadowed by Epiphany (celebrated on January 6th) until about the year 800 when it was supported by the new Roman Emperor.

It was still known as a time for drinking and partying over the solemn religious experience of today.

At different times during the middle ages, the Church and religious groups came out against the celebration of Christmas due to the drunken celebrations and the ‘officialness’ of the holiday wained. Early Puritans in the US actually banned the celebration in the 17th century. Christmas was restored as a legal holiday in 1660 despite the negative view by many religious groups.

In the early 19th century, Christmas experienced a revival with a movement out of the English Reformation which stressed a change from a focus on Atonement to a focus on Incarnation.

This change can be seen in the popular story A Christmas Carol. This was the first story that started to put a visual to our modern Christmas celebration. In the story, the two portrayed Christmas dinners, and the Christmas dinner-carriers are blessed; the Christmas food and feasting, even among the poor, reflects both the goodness of creation and the joy of heaven. Charles Dickens and other writers reinvented the holiday by emphasizing Christmas as a time for family, religion, gift-giving, and social reconciliation as opposed to the drunken revelry that had been common with the

historical celebrations.

Another relatively recent change concerned the time of Christmas gift-giving. For many centuries, however, gift-giving happened on December 6 around Saint Nicholas Day or in early January after New Year’s Eve (from the 2nd to the 6th). Early gift giving would have been handmade objects in the early years, that transitioned to mass-produced trinkets as the world became more industrialized. The popularity of the custom of gift giving grew after the positive reception of The Night Before Christmas (1823) poem and the A Christmas Carol (1849) story.

The part of Santa Claus was based on a historical figure of Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek bishop, and gift-giver. His story and the image of Santa slowly became a part of Christmas celebrations. Saint Nicholas traditionally appeared in bishop’s attire, accompanied by helpers, inquiring about the behavior of children during the past year before deciding whether they deserved a gift or not. By the 13th century, Saint Nicholas was well known in the Netherlands, and the practice of gift-giving in his name spread to other parts of central and southern Europe. At the Reformation in 16th–17th-century Europe, many Protestants changed the gift bringer to the Christ Child or Christkindl. This name was mispronounced in English to Kris Kringle, and the date of giving gifts changed from Saint Nicholas Day of December 6 to Christmas Eve. The modern popular image of Santa Claus, however, was created in the United States, and in particular in New York City. American cartoonist Thomas Nast’s illustration of Santa Claus depicted a portly, joyous, white-bearded man, wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, white-fur-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots and who carries a bag full of gifts for children.

This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th and early 20th century.

In the 1930s, the image of Santa was galvanized in the American culture by his image’s use on Coca-Cola Company ads. Their ads portrayed a few more of the current characteristics of today’s Santa Claus making their version of Santa the most recognized version worldwide.

The rest of the story of Christmas focuses on the corporate machine that created the whole consumerism market of having to buy gifts (most of the time unneeded) to make your holiday’s bright. As the ads say, you can’t be happy unless you have that new holiday car or that perfect diamond ring.. and that doesn’t even touch the toys advertising!

So, what is Christmas really about?

It depends on what time in history you want to use as a reference. It has been a drunken festival and party, it has been a banned event, it has been a time to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus, it has been a time of small gifts and family time, and it has been a time to buy happiness with your credit card.

Let’s hope as a society we can transition back to the time of family, friends, and for Christians, celebrating the birth of the Christ Jesus.

Swanville City November 7, 2017 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, November 7, 2017. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Mayor Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej.

Also present: Julie Zupko, Angie and Brett VanRissegham, Cory and John DeFoe, Mark Hallen, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held October 3, 2017 was reviewed. A motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes as printed. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Julie Zupko, from Swanville Insurance, was present to ask council if the 10 year forgivable DEED grant money could be forgiven. It has been 5 years since the insurance company has received the DEED money and Zupko has paid back in full the loan money part. Zupko is planning on selling the Swanville Insurance branch contract for deed to the VanRissegham’s by the end of the year. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to forgive the rest of the forgivable DEED loan amount. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Angie VanRissegham, from Swanville Insurance, was present to go over the City’s 2018 insurance renewal. Angie presented to council city building coverage, contents and property in open replacement costs. Council questioned the replacement costs of the water tower and city garage.

Angie will check on these, and report back. The statutory tort limit was presented and explained to council. Jim Molitor made a motion to not waive the statutory tort limit. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Council was informed of the new blanket coverage workers comp for volunteer and a public official is in place also.

Council was brought up to

date on the email fraud that had occurred in July. The City has received a check from the League of MN Cities Insurance Company for the full amount minus the deductible of $500.00.

Mark Hallen, city engineer, was present to go over the 3rd and final payment application on the Berkey Avenue North Project.

The application is in the amount of $13,462.28 includes excavation, pavement markings and retainage release money. After discussion Mayor Lange made a motion to include final payment application #3 in the claims. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The drainage problem on the corner of First Street and Berkey Avenue was discussed with Hallen. Nothing was settled about the problem as of yet.

Cory and John DeFoe were present to discuss with council the issue of eminent domain of his property between North Berkey Avenue and Springbrook Drive.

After discussion, Jim Molitor made DeFoe an offer of $7,500.00 and that it would remain green should the City gain the land.

There was not a seconded to this offer. DeFoe stated he would think about the offer and get back to council.

City maintenance worker, Lonny, reported that the shoreline by the Pillsbury Beach is now completed. The cost for the improvements is $20,567.00. Mayor Lange presented to council a grant form from Todd County Water & Soil which states Todd County will pay for half of the project.

The Swanville Lions will donate $10,000.00 toward the project.

Jim Molitor made a motion to sign

and return the grant form to Todd County Water & Soil. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to council Resolution #17-1107 which states the Swanville Lions will donate $2500.00 toward the purchase of boards for fences at the City Park hockey rink. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept Resolution #17-1107. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Delinquent utility bills were looked at. All delinquent sewer and refuse/recycling accounts will be applied to property taxes of the land owner if not paid in full. Any 90 day delinquent utility/water accounts will be turned off if not paid in full, minus current charges. As before a $100.00 rehook up charge will be added and must be paid before water will be turned on.

The city office is in need of a new copier. Metro Sales has installed in the office on trial a new copier/printer/scanner and fax machine. After discussion, council decided to purchase the machine for $2,879.00 with a monthly service agreement rather than a lease agreement.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Deb Wood made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Deb Wood and seconded by Tony Maciej to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:50 p.m.

Tobacco Farming in Stearns County Farmer Explains Historical Importance of Cultivating Tobacco Dan Ruprecht, a third-generation farmer from northern Meeker County, will discuss Tobacco Growing in Stearns County at the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club on Wednesday, December 13 at 9 a.m.

What could you do that’s completely different this year?

You might consider giving coupons for acts of kindness (like watching the kids one night while your wife goes out for a girl’s night), or giving details about a special summer vacation you’re saving for. Sometimes an experience is more memorable than a physical gift, so what type of experience can you provide with the stocking?

Consider a theme Rather than just a hodgepodge of different stuff, you might want to consider creating a theme for each stocking. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, but that little bit of extra effort could make someone’s Christmas morning even more special.

Don’t force it There’s nothing wrong with simply using the stockings as decorations, and saving all your money for the gifts under the tree.

If your family has never done the stocking thing there’s no need to start now - unless you truly feel like the change will be worth it. Your traditions are your traditions. Own them, and be proud!

Statement from Rep. Anderson on State Budget Forecast On Tuesday, Minnesota Management and Budget released the November forecast, showing a projected $188 million deficit due to lower-than-expected revenues based on assumptions about federal legislation and U.S. GDP and wage growth.

The forecast also reflected $178 million in state spending on the federal Children’s Health Insurance Program, nearly all of which would be backfilled once CHIP is renewed at the federal level. Despite the uncertain forecast, Republican leaders touted Minnesota’s strong economy, and anticipated stronger revenue estimates when the forecast is updated in February.

“I wish the forecast would have come in more even, but this is partly the product of some uncertainty at the federal level overshadowing growth in our state,” said Rep. Paul Ander-

son, R-Starbuck. “There are a number of reasons for optimism in our state’s economy, such as an extremely low unemployment rate and rising wages.

The hope is we will see that economic growth has continued when our next big forecast is issued in February. That forecast will be the important one in terms of setting a framework for the 2018 session.”

Assumptions about federal legislation and U.S. GDP and wage growth contributed to lower-than-expected revenue assumptions. The forecast assumes that no tax bill will be passed at the federal level despite passage in both the House and Senate last week, and assumes 2.2 percent GDP growth in 2017 despite 3.1 percent growth in the second quarter and 3.3 percent growth in the third quarter.
