A good speech is like a pencil: it has a point -By Harvey Mackay There are few times in life when you are totally alone … like just before you make a five-minute speech. Or if you doubt the concept of eternity, try and make a fiveminute speech.

L e t ’ s start with my basic premise: Everyone is a sales person whether you want to admit it or not. Why? Because from the time you get up in the morning until the time you go to bed at night, you are continually communicating, negotiating, persuading, influencing and selling ideas.

When you can get up on your feet and talk extemporaneously on a variety of subjects, this instills confidence, develops poise and breeds conviction.

You become more convincing in your meetings and your encounters.

Also you become a better leader, manager and salesperson.

The best kept secret in the world is Toastmasters International, which started in 1924 and today has 357,000 members in 143 countries and more than 16,600 member clubs. I am a proud graduate. Toastmasters changed my life.

And it can change your life too.

Another organization that can dramatically change your life is Dale

After years of taking the podium in front of Fortune 1000 companies and community groups, I developed a very useful tool to make speaking easier. It’s called the Harvey Mackay 35 To Stay Alive. It’s one of the many handouts available free on my website, www. harveymackayacademy.com (under Resources). Let me share a dozen key tips from the Mackay 35 that will help you give a good speech.

The three most important keys on giving a good speech are: 1) Room size.

2) Room size, and 3) Room size. You want the excitement and chemistry of a standing room only, bumper-to-bumper crowd. Extra space is a killer. Avoid it at all cost. Where possible, try to avoid high ceilings.

Have the first row set very close to the stage. Too much space between the speaker and the first row can destroy chemistry with the audience.

Studies show people remember more and laugh more in brightness.

Turn the lights up full blast, unless you are showing slides/overheads.

Practice … Practice … Practice.

Know your stuff. Don’t ever give another speech without it being entertaining, as well as educational.

Outside noise from the adjoining rooms and hallways is the #1 killer of meetings. In fact, if another event is

being held in the rooms adjacent to my talk, I will make every effort to book another venue. If you can’t hear a pin drop, you’re in the wrong room. A quick phone call to the catering manager will ensure total quiet.

Never, never, never end your program with a question and answer session. You cannot control the agenda or the quality of the questions. Start the Q & A five minutes before the end of your talk, then end with a good story.

Find out who the group’s last three to five speakers were and how they were accepted. Ask why they were successful or why they failed.

Always request that a technician be in the room during your entire talk in case of microphone problems.

Contact the Chamber of Commerce of any city you are to speak in. They will give you loads of information to familiarize you with the local surroundings and help you personalize your remarks. Above all, you must know your audience.

Never, never mispronounce a person’s name. If you’re not sure, check with the sponsor. Then double check.

Stick to your allotted time and don’t exceed it.

If you don’t have a smashing “opener” and “closer,” go back to the drawing board. And, don’t step up to the microphone until you do.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Corn Shocks “I wonder if that guy is going to get that corn harvested before the snow?”

Some of us who were raised on the farm have a habit of admiring someones corn field while we should be keeping our attention to the road. It is maybe something we learned riding to town with our Dad. Maybe it is just a bit of jealousy of that beautiful crop. It could also be our minds comparing that guy’s crop to the crops we remember growing on that same field. After all, those earlier bushels per acre were much less than today’s average. But, “if I had that field, I’d want to get it in the bin before it snows under.” Ya, well, we forget that he has another 1000 acres that also need to be harvested, some of it is under water, some needs to be stored and some must be sold and if the price goes up a nickel, that increase will certainly help make the payment to the bank. Many options, many decisions and the necessity to make the right one.

One of my readers asked that I write about shocking corn. Some of us remember that task. When we remember shocking corn, we are glad that we don’t do it anymore, however the wildlife probably wish it was still done.

The corn first needed to be cut on

the lower part of the stem. The part we remember is the old horse-drawn binder that cut the corn, put about 8 stalks together, tied it up with a string, dropped it into a bundle carrier and was dumped by the person riding on the binder in rows across the field.

Now the fun starts. Preferably there were two people doing the shocking and it wasn’t a windy day. One person picked up a couple of corn bundles, stood them on their butts and the other person added two more bundles. When there were enough corn bundles to stand by themselves, both shockers added corn to the shock until the shock was the desired size. It was then secured with a piece of twine to hold it together during the coming winter wind.

During the winter months, the horses and a hay-rack was used to gather the shocks, bring them home to the barn.

They were then run through a machine that shred the stems and leaves for cattle feed. Cobs were removed before shredding and either ground for cattle feed or fed whole to hogs and chickens.

Remember, nothing was wasted.

Many of the shocks were food and protection for squirrels, rabbits, pheasants and of course mice. We didn’t count the animals, since we saw so many of them. The pheasants lost the most population when corn shocks disappeared.

There was a desire among ghosts to tip something over on Halloween. It may have been out-houses, fish-houses or sometimes corn shocks. There was one time when shocks were placed

take 10 minutes to write down what you could do better the next time. Try something new every time you speak and you’ll never become stale.

I estimate I’ve given well over 2,000 speeches and presentations over the years. I will confess, I still get butterflies before I speak. When those butterflies flit away, I will know it’s time to walk away from the podium.

Because I am quite convinced that if I get too comfortable, my audience will too – just before they fall asleep!

Mackay’s Moral: The best way to make a speech is to have a good beginning and a good ending – and to keep them close together.

The enjoyable part of corn shocks was the field appearance after the shocking was done. It, like a field of shocked oats or wind-rowed hay gave the farmer a way of showing his accomplishment. Farming is like many other jobs. One works for ever and doesn’t actually show physical change in their workplace. For a farmer, he

feeds his crop in one end of the cow and isn’t really proud of the back-end result.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, My wife and I are following your plan, and recently we found some old savings bonds that had been given to her by her grandfather when she was a kid. Do you think we should go ahead and cash these in before they reach their final maturity date in a few months?

-John Dear John, Absolutely! Every one of those savings bonds is accruing interest at the appropriate rate for the type of bond it is. The problem is every one of those rates stinks. I hate savings bonds. We’re talking about some very low interest rates.

Another reason I don’t like savings bonds is they’re not financial instruments which cause you to be responsible with them. People lose them, they forget about them, and then maybe they turn up in an old lock box somewhere down the road after making a whopping two or three percent.

Back in the day, they used to be positioned as patriotic and all that.

But who wants to finance the stuff this government does? We’re not supporting World War II anymore, you know?

Cash them in, and depending on what Baby Step you’re on, put it toward your emergency fund, your debt snowball, retirement, your mortgage—just be proactive, and do something better with the money!

-Dave Dear Dave, We have two preschool kids, and I’m a stay-at-home mom. My husband brings home about $2,500 a month, and our mortgage payment is $1,000 a month. Recently, we’ve had to tap into our savings in order to pay the bills.

Should I go back to work? There are a couple of reputable daycare centers near us, but I’m just not sure if this is the right thing to do.

Dear Tammy, Being a full-time mom is a wonderful thing. And honestly, I can’t blame you for wanting to stay home with your children when they’re so young.

The biggest problem I see is that 40 percent of your husband’s paycheck is going toward your mortgage. That’s way too much! A house payment should never be more than 25 percent of your take-home pay.

I know trying to live on the $1,500 that’s left is hard, especially with two babies in the house. But it doesn’t sound like a lot of fat can be trimmed right now. One of you might consider taking on a part-time job nights or weekends for a while, or he could look into enhancing his education. Either one of these would help get your income up.

Selling the house is an option, too. But I’m not a fan of that one except in the most extreme circumstances.

Right now, I’m viewing this as a math problem with three components.

The components are income, house payment, and lifestyle. You and your husband need to sit down, and have a serious heart-to-heart talk about things.

There will have to be some sacrifices in order to make things better, but only the two of you together can determine exactly what’s best for your family.

Obituaries Raymond H. “Ray” Von Wahlde

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, St. Paul’s Catholic United, and the Bishop Busch Council #4863 Knights of Columbus. Ray enjoyed collecting International tractors he owned, going on family vacations, attending the grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities, flower and vegetable gardening, and loved spending time with his family.

Ray will always be remembered for his contagious laugh.

Survivors include his children, Kathleen (Doug Drevlow) Von Wahlde of Sauk Centre, Susan (Dean) Ahrens of Grey Eagle, and Nancy (Dennis) Ahrens of Sauk Centre; grandchildren, Chris (Sam), Mitch, Tyler (Tina Bauer), Doug, Kyle (Ashley Hagen), Katelyn (Mitch Wolbeck), Kali, and Kenna; seven great-grandchildren, Amelia, Emmera, Aubrey, Everett, Adaley, Everly, and Axton; brother, Elmer Von Wahlde of Sauk Centre; sisters-in-law, Alma Von Wahlde and Jane Welle; brother-in-law, James (Bonnie) Kampsen; and many nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Von Wahlde on December 15, 2018; parents, Edwin and Johanna Von Wahlde; brothers, Edward and Richard Von Wahlde; and sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Wiener.

Serving as casket bearers were Chris Ahrens, Mitch Ahrens, Tyler Ahrens, Doug Ahrens, Kyle Ahrens, and Mitch Wolbeck.

Cross bearer was Katelyn Ahrens and scripture bearer was Kali Ahrens. Gift bearers were Kenna Ahrens and Sam Ahrens and the reader was Sara Folk.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre.

Raymond H. “Ray” Von Wahlde, age 78 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 28, 2019 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 2 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Raymond Henry Von Wahlde was born August 6, 1941 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Edwin and Johanna (Bussmann) Von Wahlde. Ray graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1959. On August 21, 1965 he was united in marriage to Rita Kampsen at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Ray took over the family farm and eventually sold the cows in 1999. He worked at Cabinet Components for eight years while he continued grain farming.

employed by Stearns County for 20 years as a housekeeper and then retired from her job with Home Sweet Home. She was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and Catholic Aid Association.

Mary enjoyed living with her special caregivers Lynn, Randy and their family for several years. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends on shopping trips, going out to eat, visiting the casino or watching a good movie with popcorn. Mary also had her favorite pup, Piper, who was a constant, loving companion to her for many years.

Survivors include sisters-in-law, Mary Blenker of Albany, MN; and Janet Blenker of Avon, MN; several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Grund on March 7, 2000, and two brothers, LeRoy and Roger Blenker.

Walter “Wally” Sand

W a l t e r “Wally” Sand, age 92 of New Munich, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota, where Wally was the first resident.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 5 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Walter P. Sand was born March 31, 1927 in New Munich, Minnesota to Herman and Elizabeth (Humbert) Sand. He attended Sacred Heart School in New Munich until the 8th grade. Wally was a lifetime dairy farmer. He also worked for Franklin Manufacturing, Ecker Feed Mill, New Munich Meats, did Custom Silo Filling and Baling, and installed monuments around the country. Donald A. “Don” Boucher Donald A. “Don” Boucher, age 79 of Grey Eagle, is done working.

He died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, November 29, 2019, at the V.A. Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6 at the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Grey Eagle with Fr. Ron Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Ward Springs.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph’s. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday evening at the church.

Donald Alphee Boucher was born on April 29, 1940, on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota to Marciel and Kathleen (Poitra Zura) Boucher.

Don graduated from Rolla High School and actively served two years in the United States Army. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business and Physical Education at Mayville State University where he played football and met the love of his life.

On June 22, 1969, he married Laura Jeanne Elliot. Together they served as educators at Grey Eagle High School and raised three children. Don coached multiple sports including football, women’s track &

field, and men’s basketball. He retired from teaching at Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School and continued to work as a Driver’s Education instructor, substitute teacher, and as a stay-at-home father, a role in which he earned many accolades.

Don was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Joseph in Grey Eagle and the Monsignor Lorsung Council #14616 Knights of Columbus. Don enjoyed hunting, fishing, biking, athletics, gardening, and working hard for and alongside his family. His legacy as a hard-working, family-focused, neighborhood leader will be remembered by all who knew him throughout his life.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 50 years, Laura Boucher of Grey Eagle; children Zachary Boucher of Plymouth, MA, Leslie (Jared Fairchild) Boucher of Omaha, NE, and LeVi Boucher of Minneapolis, MN; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois Miller; nephew, Marc Butts; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Serving as casket bearers will be Zachary Boucher, Paul VanHavermaet, Chico Hellmann, Brian Middendorf, Matt Stangler, and Jared Fairchild. Cross bearer will be Jodi Marquez Bierschbach and scripture bearer will be Elisa Mudgett.

Honorary bearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus, Bob Zollar, Mike Kutter, Dennis Wessel, Jack Holpit and Loren Bitz.

Memorials are preferred to Knute Nelson Hospice.

Melvin L. Eickhoff

Melvin L. Eickhoff, age 88 of Freeport, passed away unexpectedly on December 1, 2019 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 6 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Melvin Leo Eickhoff was born September 23, 1931 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Gertrude (Thull) Eickhoff. He married Norma Austing on October 21, 1952 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. The couple made their home on the farmstead southeast of New Munich for 60 years. Melvin sold corn seed for 50 years to local farmers. He took daily rides on his side by side with his dog, Sandy.

Jace Josephson is a three year old little boy who lives in Upsala with his Dad Tim, Mom Akasha, and his older sister Lilli. Jace was born with a heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, which means he was born without the left side of his heart.

Over the course of his short life, Jace has had a heart transplant, a kidney transplant, and cancer. He beat cancer, but is now fighting to help his body not reject his new heart. Jace has fought and beat the odds many times during his young life, and is a true superhero!

It was the middle of the night when the nurse entered my hospital room to take my “vital signs.” With quiet confidence she went through her routine reading and recording various numbers.

As the door closed behind her, I began to recite the Lord’s Prayer. When I got to the phrase “Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” a sense of peace swept over me. As I reflected on those two words - “Your will” - God spoke to me and said, “You know, I never said that you would be spared from the pain and suffering of life. Only that I would be with you and guard you in and through your life’s journey and ‘deliver you from the snare of the fowler.’” In His will we are always safe and secure.

Often the “snares” of the “fowler” appear when we least expect them. He would encourage us to doubt God’s capabilities or care, His concern or compassion. Certainly he would be delighted if we came to the conclusion that our problems are beyond God’s power.

Surely he would want us to believe that God has favorites and we are just beyond His grace. But not so! God will protect His own!

Dear Motor Medics, I have a newer Mazda Miata and I’m having a problem with detonation in my engine. During cruising and under acceleration the engine will ping under load and on hills. The car calls for premium gasoline and I use it every tankful but even if I use the highestoctane premium fuel the car still pings.

Do you have any ideas on what it could be?

-The Burger King guy in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Dear Burger King guy, You have asked a great question and we want to address the fuel question first as its very important. If a car specifies premium it is important to use it. Not only does it ensure the best performance from the fuel that the car can deliver, it also allows the car to burn cleaner than using less than premium lower octane fuel. When the lower octane fuel is used it is possible to build up carbon deposits which can cause detonation.

You may be using premium, but you could still have some carbon buildup in the engine which is contributing to the detonation. Carbon deposits can often be removed by getting a professional fuel system cleaning done. The kind we use cleans both the injection system and the combustion chambers which is what we suggest. A professional cleaning combined with regular use of premium fuel can make a difference in the amount of detonation you get from your engine. Good luck and enjoy that car.

light wiring harness that plugs in under the vehicle corroded so badly that I removed it from the main harness and carefully closed and protected the bare wires. After the plug removal I removed the tail lamps and carefully connected the trailer harness directly to the tail and brake lamp wires so they would not come off or short. I have hauled the trailer about three times now and on the most recent trip both turn signals failed. I don’t see any burnt fuses, but I get power to the lights.

-Daryl in Newport Beach, Rhode Island Dear Daryl, The caravans now contain a front control module that controls lighting functions including the taillights and trailer lighting. When built, the trailer lights were on a separate circuit than the taillights. The tail lamp circuit is made to only carry the amp load of the two tail lamps and no more. If any extra load is added by way of a trailer the module can overload which can destroy it. The first step is to remove the added wiring and check fuses. If there is still no power you will need to have the module checked and possibly replaced.

Burnhamville Township October 29, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held October 29, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit.

Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Joe Muellner, Mike Berscheit; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of September 24, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters from planning and zoning hearing which the board had no issue with, annual weed inspection report, notice of census training for township officials, web design offer, and an opioid class action lawsuit information from another state.

Sup. Berscheit made a motion for resolution # 2019-3 stating Burtrum Community Center is the official polling place for Burnhamville Township for 2019. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner.

Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Johnson to pay all bills numbered 5824 through 5841: Rev. $1,106.70; R & B $8,920.37; Fire 18,865.72. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve the Swanville Rural Fire Association contract as presented. Motion was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

In the road report the supervisors agreed to leave the holding pond alone on Dunlin Road for this year. Duckweed Drive has a ditch issue. A supervisor and road contractor will view it.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $40,200.78. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed.

The clerk distributed new time sheets for extra work the board members do.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Johnson. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:34 p.m. Next meeting will be on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

Shirley Hulinsky, Burnhamville Township Clerk Swanville City November 6, 2019 PUBLIC HEARING Mayor Lange called the Public Hearing to order at 6:45 p.m.

Council members present: Mayor Lange, Deb Woods, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor and Tony Maciej.

The purpose of the hearing is hear public input on the replotting and

thorizing the sale of Lot 2 Block 1 of North Berkey Avenue addition to Habitat for Humanity. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept Resolution #19-1106A authorizing the sale to Habitat for Humanity, Lot 2, Block 1. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Lange presented to council a land use permit for Habitat for Humanity to build a 78’x24’ single family dwelling home with garage in the North Berkey Addition. Planning and Zoning has looked over the application and approved. Mayor Lange made a motion to approve the land use permit for Habitat for Humanity home.

Deb Wood seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Resolution #19-1106B was presented to council designating Morrison County and Todd County Courthouses as polling places for the City of Swanville, because of having mail-in ballots. Mayor Lange made a motion to accept Resolution #19-1106B designating Morrison and Todd County Courthouses as the City of Swanville’s polling places. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

It was discussed by council installing street lights on North Berkey Avenue. Council will look for three used street light and will check with Minnesota Power to see if they can install a street light by the cul-de-sac yet this year.

A snowplowing helper is needed for the maintenance worker. Norm Carlson made a motion for maintenance worker Lonny to find a helper for snowplowing. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Three delinquent refuse/recycling accounts and one delinquent TIF creation fee was presented to the council. Council was in agreement to send letters to these land owners and if not paid in full by November 26, 2019 the delinquent amounts will be added to their property taxes payable in 2020.

Council member Maciej proposed raising land use permit fees.

After discussion, it was decided to table until council looks around at other city’s permit fees charged.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:20 p.m.

Also present: Clif Allen, Heather Brill, Andrew & Elly Tepley, Bryan Allen, and reporter Sheila McCoy. Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting Monday, October 7, 2019 were reviewed. A motion was made by Deb Wood to approve the minutes. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor; motion carried.

Bryan Allen was present to talk with the council about the land he has purchased at the end of West Fourth Street which is out of the city limits. He presented to council about the possibility of annexing the land into the city and to have the 40 acres of land sectioned off into 8 to 10 lots. The lots would possibly have city water and sewer with paved roads in future plans.

It was decided that Allen talk with the city engineer about the feasibility of city water and sewer going to these lots. After discussion, it was decided this issue will be talked about at a later date.

City engineer, Clif Allen with Moore Engineering, was present to discuss with council the North Berkey 2nd Addition. Council decided that Allen prepare an estimate of the cost to install city water and sewer, road with curb and gutter, and a lift station in the North Berkey 2nd Addition.

Mayor Lange presented to council the preliminary plat of North Berkey 2nd Addition. Tony Maciej made a motion to accept the plat of North Berkey 2nd Addition. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Jim Molitor made a motion to rezone North Berkey 2nd Addition from industrial to high residential. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. The city clerk will inform Festler Surveying to proceed with the recording of the new plat. A covenant to the land will follow.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

Extremely difficult harvest the latest challenge thrown at farmers If this weather continues, we could be in for a long winter! Two storms last week left our state covered in white, as snow and high winds combined to create difficult conditions during the busiest travel week of the year.

This, on top of one of the most challenging growing seasons for farmers in memory. First, a late and wet spring delayed planting. Then, continued wet weather into June caused many fields to go unplanted. And when we needed a warm and dry fall to finish out the crops and dry them down in the field, we got just the opposite.

More rain, and even snow, along with bitter cold temps, made this a harvest season to try and forget. In all my years of farming, I don’t recall having to wonder if the combine would start the next morning because the weather report said the temp was going to drop into the teens overnight. One farmer lamented that his combine was sitting out in the field with dead batteries and plugged fuel filters. And before the ground froze, we got our combine stuck so bad a back hoe had to dig it out of the mud!

Economic conditions are also still difficult. In general, most crops probably

turned out somewhat better than anticipated, considering the late spring. However, high moisture levels in harvested grain, along with low test weights, have combined to make discounts at the elevator pretty steep. And for those who dry their own corn, shortages of propane and natural gas caused angst in some areas as harvest had to stop because fuel wasn’t available to keep dryers going.

Gov. Walz signed an “hours of exemption order” for truckers as they were forced to travel further and wait in line longer to load. Some were traveling as far as Kansas to pick up propane!

Lake Minnewaska in Pope County froze over Nov. 12, one of the earliest dates in recent history. That meant the ground also froze, stopping fall tillage and fertilizer application. It later thawed out again, which did allow for some limited, additional work to get done. We are shaping up for another challenge next spring to get enough fertilizer in place to make up for what didn’t get applied this fall. One forecast called for the opening of shipping on the upper Mississippi River to be in late April, which could be too late to replenish supplies in some parts of the state.

The Department of Human Services in St. Paul has been in the news too often this year, mainly for overpayment of benefits, along with staff resignations and re-hirings. The House finally held a hearing on the topic, as it was scheduled for earlier this week. Maybe we will finally get some answers to how one de-

partment could mismanage millions of taxpayer dollars.

Another area I’m working on is the state’s lack of full compliance with federal Section 179 depreciation. Because the state does not allow the same higher depreciation limits that the IRS does, we have a problem. With like-kind exchanges now treated as income, businesses are being hit with tax bills for last year from the Dept. of Revenue. Anyone who makes capital purchases and trades older equipment as part of the deal, could be subject to this new Minnesota tax. I’ve had constituents contact me after receiving letters saying they owe thousands of dollars in additional income tax. Some

of these amounts are large, getting up into the six-figure mark!

We are talking a lot of money here.

Figures from Revenue show they expect to collect $5.9 million from business corporations in fiscal year 2020 and $4.7 million from individuals. I am having legislation drafted that would make our state fully compliant with Section 179 and allow fast depreciation of up to one million dollars. We go back into session in February and it’s one of the first things I want to see action on.

Bonita “Bonnie” Mauritz Services celebrating the life of Bonnie Mauritz, age 73 of Albany was held Friday, November 29 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Albany.

Burial was in the Seven Dolors Parish Cemetery.

Bonnie died Saturday at the Mother Of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany.

Bonnie was born April 19, 1946 in Albany to Norbert and Myrtle (Christen) Neuwirth. She did home daycare for several years and then worked for Mother of Mercy for over 30 years. She was a CNA the last few years she worked at the nursing home.

She is a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Rick Mauritz, Albany; Cheryl (Rich) Steindl, Oakdale and Sheri Mauritz, Inver Grove Heights. She is also survived by her brothers, Norbert (Janet) Neuwirth, Avon and Neil (Joie) Neuwirth, Albany.

Caroline T. Engelmeyer

Caroline T. Engelmeyer, age 79, formerly of St. Cloud, died Saturday, November 29, 2019 at Mother of Mercy Care Center, Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated M o n d a y , December 2nd at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Caroline Theresa Engelmeyer was born July 24, 1940 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Christ and Bertha (Herzog) Engelmeyer. She attended school in St. Rosa. Following her years in school, Caroline became a waitress, first working at Charles Café in Freeport. She then became employed as a waitress in St. Cloud. When the Holiday Inn opened, Caroline took a job waitressing in the hotel restaurant and worked there until her retirement in May 2016.

As a young lady, she was member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. At St. Rose parish, Caroline tended to all the outdoor flowers and also washed and pressed the alter linens for the church.

When St. Cloud became her home, she became a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud and would attend mass at the St. Cloud VA Hospital.

Caroline can be remembered as a very hard worker and was truly excited to go to

work and serve her customers. Her hobbies included doing cross stitch and embroidery and putting puzzles together. Caroline was an avid Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings fan. Being an aunt and great aunt was truly special to her and she loved her time with her nieces and nephews.

She will be missed by her sisters, Alice McKenney of St. Louis Park, Gloria (Jerry) Thomes of Little Falls, and Mary Jane (John) Klaphake of St. Rosa; and sister-in-law, Margie Engelmeyer of St. Rosa and Mary Ann Engelmeyer of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents, Christ and Bertha Engelmeyer; brothers, Art Engelmeyer, Ron Engelmeyer, and Roger Engelmeyer; brother-in-law, Ronald McKenney; sister-in-law, Mary Kay Engelmeyer and nephew, Jack Engelmeyer.

Serving as casket bearers were Jamie Engelmeyer, Michael Klaphake, Glen Engelmeyer, Chris Engelmeyer, Eric Thomes and Chris Thomes. Cross bearer was Peyton Weber and scripture bearer was Kaleb Weber. Readers were Ahna Neil and Elizabeth Neil. Gift bearers were Mary Watkins and Paul Weber. Words of remembrance were shared by June Klaphake.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz A Free Lunch; 2 Thessalonians 3:1-13

There is a saying, “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” Thessalonica had a problem with idleness. Paul warns them to stay away from people walking in idleness and he gives them this command, “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”

It is possible that the church in Thessalonica was a community that had everything in common like we hear about in Acts and history is filled with examples of people taking advantage of socially minded communities like this. When communities help out those that lack food, shelter, or even clothing you will have people taking advantage of them. Humans will do about anything for a free lunch so to speak. It is also possible that the church in Thessalonica struggled because they believed Jesus was going to return very soon or were growing weary of doing good.

Feeding those unable to feed themselves shows God’s mercy. Feeding those who can feed themselves denies the created purpose God has given us to tend and keep creation for our own sustenance. The sin of idleness is not one all of us struggle with

but the concept behind this command is valid and purposeful. The temptation to rely on the generosity of others even when it comes through the government is a sin fallen man will always struggle with.

Yet there is another trap of idleness set up by Satan in our society. Like relying on others generosity it is a promise of a free lunch. The great lie floating around in our society today is that everyone can have great paying jobs that are easy and not very labor intensive as long as you get the right education. Our public schools focus on preparing students for college leaving the truth of God’s Word behind. A free education that costs tax payers good money. Then our universities charge wishful students far too much only to have the truth of God’s Word undermined and attacked from every angle.

Some end up living the dream and find those jobs where they do very little work and earn good money. Others find high paying but more demanding jobs but then take advantage of their employers and fellow employees by putting only minimal effort into their job.

By Rachel Cruze The holidays are here, and for many parents, it’s all about managing their kids’ expectations. They think they need to give their kids the biggest presents, the most presents, and the coolest presents. But trust me: Little Sally won’t be scarred for life if she doesn’t get a pony.

It’s okay to want the best for your kids—we all do! But you should never put yourself in a financial bind to make their holiday dreams come true. That’s not what Christmas is about. While other parents are shelling out hundreds or even thousands of dollars to give their kids the “perfect” Christmas, you can teach your little ones about contentment.

Contentment isn’t a money issue, even though it has a huge impact on your child’s future. It’s a heart issue. Content people may not have the best of everything, but they make the best of everything. Without contentment, people often try to fill the void in their hearts by cramming it full of more and more stuff. As a parent, you’ve got to prepare your children to defend themselves against this threat.

There’s lots of research out there showing children are aware of what they have in comparison to what others have at a super young age. Marketers fight for their attention early on, and by default, they’re fighting for your money.

Make sure your kids know the newness of stuff isn’t what funds their happiness or their value. Their worth goes far beyond a robo-unicorn, name-brand clothes, or the iPhone 73 that everyone else has.

If you have teens, let them know if they pursue material things they’re going to be a hamster on a wheel for the rest of their lives. They’ll keep going around and around, always thinking the next thing is the one that will make them happy. But, of course, it won’t. They’ll just run in circles,

wasting all their time and energy, and ultimately going nowhere. What God has in store for them is so much bigger than that!

One last reminder: Contentment isn’t about age. It’s about maturity. I’ve met 8-year-olds who get this, and 48-yearolds who don’t. Your child can probably tell where your heart is regarding material wants and desires. So, be sure to give yourself a heart check and show your child what real happiness, joy, and contentment look like.

don’t really need to work for our food. Like all of Satan’s lies this directly denies a truth God has established for creation. Yes, a curse placed by God upon this creation but the Word of God none the less for someone must still work for our free lunch. God’s Word is clear that it is not right for people to willingly not work and still be fed.

The curse of sin is not always the message we want to proclaim as the church but it is one needed in our society and it does help point people to the closest thing we can find to a free lunch. It is the forgiveness and salvation found in Jesus through faith. Not completely free because Jesus paid for our forgiveness with his very life. There is also faith that trusts the promises of God and brings us to the grace of God, our free lunch so to speak. Amen.
