Happy people make other people happy -By Harvey Mackay

There is a fable about a little girl who was feeling particularly lonely and blue when she happened across a gorgeous butterfly trapped in the thorns of a blackberry bush.

Taking great care not to tear its fragile wings, the girl’s nimble fingers finally worked the insect free, whereupon, instead of fluttering away, it turned into a golden fairy who offered to grant any wish.

“I want to be happy!” the little girl cried.

The fairy smiled, leaned forward, whispered something in her ear and vanished. And from that day forward there was no more happy spirit in the land than that child, who grew into a merry woman and a contented old lady.

On her deathbed, her neighbors crowded around, desperate that the secret of happiness not die with her.

The neighbor smiled benevolently, and whispered, “She told me that everyone – no matter how rich or secure or self-contained or successful they might appear – had need of me.”

How true! Everyone needs to be needed. It brings tremendous satisfaction to know that you have such a vital purpose in life, one that surely contributes to your happiness and contentment.

I’ve learned over the years that happiness comes from making other people happy. Successful people, as well as successful businesses, take great joy in finding ways to spread happiness.

Why is Disneyland the “happiest place on earth”? Is it any wonder that one of the biggest songs of the year is Pharrell Williams’ “Happy”? How many Happy Meals do you think McDonald’s sells?

Have you ever attended a happy hour at your favorite watering hole?

Businesses that are clued in to what customers want find ways to incorporate “happy” into the sale. A new car doesn’t drive any better because the dealership was decked out in balloons and offered free hot dogs. But a happy experience beats an ordinary one most days.

Following that line of thought, it turns out that the conventional wisdom is wrong: It is possible to buy happiness – when you spend your money on others.

Researchers at the University of British Columbia and Harvard University found that people who buy gifts for others and make charitable donations report being happier than people who spend their money primarily on themselves.

The scientists studied 630 Americans and asked them to rate their general happiness, their annual income, and

their monthly spending – including bills, gifts for themselves, gifts for others and charitable contributions.

And again, it illustrates the point that knowing that others have need of you brightens your outlook.

Even our nation’s Declaration of Independence places a premium on happiness, stating that we are “bestowed with certain unalienable rights, which among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jefferson and company left it up to us to figure out how to pursue happiness, but I have some thoughts for you. Here’s my prescription for happiness. Use it regularly and you will see wonderful results.

• Don’t let little things bother you.

There is always something better to think about.

• Keep your perspective. Put first things first and stay the course.

• Only worry about what you can control. If you cannot do anything about a situation, worrying won’t make it – or you – better.

• Do your best, but understand that you can’t always be a perfectionist.

21 Ways to Reach Your Goals by Dec. 31st

Create Your Own Definition of Success Are you chasing something you haven’t identified clearly? It is very easy to fall into the trap of assuming that making more money is the answer to almost all of your problems and will bring you more happiness. Yet there is no research that supports this once people earn beyond $30,000/year.

Surely you want a definition that becomes a target to aim at each day (your purpose really) and, preferably, so you can feel success every day even if you are aiming for the stars. Maybe you end up changing your goals with the clarity of what’s really important to you.

2. Know Your One Thing Gary Keller’s excellent book about this poses the question: “What’s the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

The intent is to help you focus on something BIG that matters most to you long term and then work backwards to a One Thing for 2015, 2014, this month, this week and so on.

3. A Few SMART Goals that INSPIRE you You don’t want too many goals because it will hurt your focus. Pick 3-5 and make them specific, measurable, realistic, achievable and time-bound so an outsider could tell right away whether you’ve achieved it or not.

Lastly, on a scale of 1-10, how inspiring is each goal? You will take far more action if you have a 10!

4. Develop a Weekly Scoreboard Identify 5-15 key things to measure that truly show how your business is doing. You also want to have a weekly goal for each item. Consider having one for your personal life.

5. Raise Your PQ to Over 75 Only 20% of people have a PQ over 75 which has much to do with why most people do not reach their potential. How can you expect to reach a goal if every other thought you have holds you back and talks you out of it?

6. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Goals Whether you like it or not, you are responsible for the results you get in life.

Either that or you allowed a situation to develop. Until you accept this, you make no progress. It’s hard to face this but liberating too because then you ask yourself

better questions and take charge for seeking the answers.

7. Improve your ENVIRONMENT: spend more time around others committed to excel.

Who you spend time with is who you become. Who inspires you? Who pushes you? Who motivates you to be more in life? Get them in your calendar.

8. Delegate Everything Except That Which You Love to Do and What You Do Best Not all of this requires you hiring someone to do it. There are creative ways for people to mutually help each other.

Start at least with a pad and paper and listing out tasks you do that someone else could do at least 80% as well as you including in your personal life.

9. Get in Shape I recommend this so strongly because it’s the area where you can see the fastest progress. This is great for motivation (feeling great) and is a strong confidence boost. It will not help you reach your goals unless you take new action in those other goal areas, but it will give you more energy and drive to make it happen, i.e. “if I make great gains in my health, I can make great gains in my business.”

10. Take a Weekly Pit Stop: 60 Minutes to Work On Your Business Find a location where you will not be interrupted, where you can shut off the internet and focus on strategy rather than just getting swamped in the busyness.

Come up with an agenda of important topics (not urgent ones): next steps with top referral sources, top prospects, top clients etc. and ideas on how to delegate more.

11. Conduct an Evening Review Better questions will lead you to take more useful actions. Great examples from Mark Divine’s Way of the SEAL include: Was I “on” and in the zone today or “off” and unbalanced? What contributed to this feeling?

What were the top three positive things I accomplished or that happened today? What did I learn from them?

12. Think BIG Big is not necessarily bad – far from it. For many who reach great heights, it is the reason they succeeded: they dared to dream. They had the courage to jump onto the “playing field.”

This is where spending more time in a supportive environment can make all the difference.

13. Identify Your Top Six Referral Sources One difference between business owners who make a million and middle class business owners who don’t is that their core influence network is 5.7 people.

14. Ask for What You Want

• When you are right, be gracious.

When wrong, be even more gracious.

• Trust or believe people whenever you can, and when that isn’t possible, accept them at their worst and weakest.

You can keep your convictions without destroying others.

• Don’t compare yourself to others, which is the guarantee of instant misery.

People are different for many reasons.

• Brush away the chip on your shoulder so that when something happens to you that you don’t like, you can take the high road.

• Give of yourself wholeheartedly or enthusiastically. When you have nothing left to give, someone will return the favor.

• Make happiness the aim of your life instead of bracing for life’s barbs.

• Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness. Others can do kind things for you, but you must be open to being happy. But don’t let that stop you from trying to make others happy!

One great thing to track weekly is how often you ask for the business opportunities you want: prospects, referral sources, speaking opportunities, new hires and the top four.

15. Be a Giver Rather Than a Matcher or a Taker.

Extensive research done by Wharton professor Adam Grant has shown that those who are open, giving resources to others bring in 50% more business than matchers or takers. Most people are matchers seeking tit-for-tat relationships but this is a limiting way to be.

16. Don’t Try Too Hard There is a difference between hard work and trying too hard. One comes from drive and passion and the other comes from frustration and neediness. It is a miserable way to live and is a major turnoff to be on the receiving end. When you start feeling this way, stop and ask yourself a better question like: “what’s something fun I could do for a few minutes?” or do some deep relaxing breathing and picture yourself somewhere you love.

17. Visualise What You Want

If visualising is an effective and common practice for top athletes, surgeons and performers, I’m sorry – but why would someone dismiss it as ‘touchy feely’? Your brain is deeply influenced by pictures. Leverage this!

18. Do Today What Others Won’t So Tomorrow You Can Accomplish What Others Can’t This is the motto for the Coaching Gym I created. There’s no secret to success and much of goal-getting is doing what less successful don’t feel like doing.

19. Seek Out More Accountability Many people will run away from being accountable for their goals. This is not for you. You will always learn more from when you fail than when you make an excuse.

20. Avoid the Two Lies About Happiness 1. “You can’t be happy with your current circumstances.”

2. “The “when” is a moving target rather than a promise to be kept.”

Obituaries Melvin J. Vogt

Melvin J. Vogt, age 74 of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Belgrade Nursing Home in Belgrade, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Melvin Joseph Vogt was born April 16, 1940 in Richmond, Minnesota to John and Helen (Ressemann) Vogt. He was united in marriage to Judy Schleper on October 21, 1967 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Richmond. Melvin spent 6 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. He drove milk truck for the farmers around Meire Grove for

Nancy M. Marty, age 77 of Burtrum died Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, December 6th at 11:00 AM at Community Covenant Church in Upsala.

Gathering time for friends and family will be from 10-11 AM. Nancy was born on April 4th, 1937.

Her favorite moments were on Mound Lake entertaining family & friends, spending time with grandchildren time

many years. He then worked at Paynesville Fleet Supply until his retirement. His hobbies included fixing and tinkering with cars, drinking coffee, and making new friends.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

Leona E. Jacobs Moscho, age 90 of Melrose, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday, December 1, 2014 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

had eight beautiful children. The couple farmed in Little Sauk, Minnesota. When Norbert died in 1960, Leona moved the family to Melrose. She was a hard working woman working at Jennie-O’s, the school cafeteria and the VFW. Leona loved to cook, bake, garden, and play cards. Later in life, she married Joe Moscho.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Melrose and a member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 Auxiliary.

Leona is survived by all eight of her children, Roger (Arvis) Jacobs of Bowdle, South Dakota, David (Terri) Jacobs of Surprise, Arizona, Diane (Larry) Rasmusen of Sauk Centre, Eugene (Karen) Jacobs of Oak Park Heights, Ruth (George) Hiltunen of Sauk Centre, Joyce (Al) Meyer of Sauk Centre, Ann (Rich) Reed of Big Lake, and Norma Jacobs of Upsala; 20 grandchildren and many greatgrandchildren; brother and sisters, Monica Frieler, Rose Hempel, Ann Stocks, Betty Kampsen, and Ed Wensman.

Anthony “Tony” John Hondl, Jr. Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Anthony “Tony” John Hondl, Jr., age 94, of Albany was held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Father Brad Jenniges officiated and entombment took place in the parish cemetery. Tony passed away peacefully Tuesday afternoon, November 25, 2014 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home.

Tony was born on January 12, 1920 to Anton and Agnes (Knapp) Hondl in Albany. He was raised alongside eleven siblings on the family farm. Tony entered the US Army in 1941 and proudly served his country as a part of the engineer company with the infantry in the Pacific during WWII. Upon returning in 1944, he resumed working with his family. Tony

and Ralph handled the dairy cows and George handled the pigs. Family was very important to him and he enjoyed having his nieces and nephews visit. Farming was his life and he had few hobbies, although he loved going to auctions and shopping for tools and gadgets. Tony spent lots of time at the Legion and helped them whenever he could. He and Ralph lived together on the farm until he entered the nursing home in April of 2013. Tony was a member of Seven Dolors Church, the Albany Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.

Tony is survived by his brothers John (Mary) Hondl, Bloomington; Carl (Lorraine) Hondl, St. Cloud; Roman (Connie) Hondl, Edina; Anselm (Shirley) Hondl, Brooklyn Park; Ralph Hondl, Albany; many nieces and nephews; his sisters-in-law Delrose Hondl and Lucille Hondl; his brother-in-law Thomas Dattilo; and many other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Anton and Agnes, his brothers George, Mathias, and Mathew, and his sisters Agnes Dattilo, Ann Maslow, and Mary Hondl.

The Sons of Norway, St. Paul Lodge, developed the exhibit with funds from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and the Sons of Norway Foundation.

Dear Dave, My motherin-law is in poor health and doesn’t have a lot of money. She has been giving us a lot of her earnings over the last couple of years as a kind of early inheritance, because she’s afraid she’ll spend it all.

We’re setting it aside in a savings account in case she needs it, but I still feel strange about the situation. What do you recommend we do?

-Andrew Dear Andrew, This is an odd scenario. It’s like taking donations from poor people because they refuse to address their own issues.

My recommendation is pretty simple. She needs to learn how to properly handle her own money.

Obviously, it wouldn’t be a good idea for you to say that to your mother-inlaw, so your wife should be the one who attempts to lovingly and carefully deliver the message. The conversation still may not be pleasant, but there’s a better chance she’ll listen to a daughter than to you.

I appreciate the fact that you and your wife aren’t being greedy or opportunistic about this situation. Setting the money aside and earmarking it for your motherin-law later on is an honorable thing. If your wife can’t convince her mom to start taking care of her own finances, at least you can protect her from herself.

You’d still be treating the symptom instead of the problem, but if she won’t listen it may be the best you can do.

Dear Carrie, I don’t have a Baby Step for weddings, but in my mind it would come after Baby Step 5, which is putting aside a college fund for your children. Once you have education savings, retirement and extra house payments underway, then you could start putting aside a little extra for weddings.

This may not make me popular with some young ladies or their moms, but an education is more important than a wedding. Maybe this is the dad in me coming out, but if I had to choose between paying for college educations and paying for big weddings, I’m going to pay for school. In my mind, anyone who disagrees with that is kind of a twit.

Weddings are wonderful, and you should mark these kinds of milestones with celebration. But a wedding is only a one-day event. Plus, there’s absolutely no statistical correlation between the size and expense of the wedding and the success of the marriage!

Melrose Community Education News Minnesota Through The Lens:

By Stacey Austing-Jacobson This week I had the pleasure of presenting two awards to area Community Education professionals, on behalf of the Minnesota Community Education Association (MCEA). It was an honor to recognize the great work they are doing in their communities.

Josie Dingmann, BBE Community Education Director, works with local partners, on the Back Pack Attack program. This program provides meals and snacks to students who may need additional resources to obtain meals over the weekends during the school year. This collaboration with the BBE Food Shelf, Trinity Lutheran Church, Second Harvest Heartland and area businesses, is the perfect example of Community Education working within the community to improve lives.

Josie, her staff, and the many people who assist with this program received a project award for their great work.

Mark Grelson, recently retired Community Education director for Rocori Public Schools, received the 2014 Regional Community Educator of Excellence Award. This award recognizes Mark’s commitment to his community and his many years of important work in the field of Community Education. Mark has been a community education director for 32.5 years, with over 20 years in the Rocori school district. He has served on the MCEA Board, attended and participated in many fall conferences, and regional learning sessions. He is always supportive of

How bad do you want to be good?” he asked.

Confused, I asked, “What do you mean? Being bad to be good doesn’t make sense.”

“This has to do with motivation,” came the reply. “Do you really want to be ‘outstanding’ or be just like so many others who do things half-heartedly or to just get by in life?”

David was determined to be the man God wanted him to be. He was not content to go about his daily activities without making sure that he was a “man after God’s own heart.” So he asked God to “Test my motives and my heart.”

That must have taken a great amount of real courage - especially after he demanded, “Declare me innocent, O Lord!” Imagine his boldness: “I have acted with integrity...I have trusted without wavering...put me on trial and crossexamine me.”

Rarely do we hear of God’s judgment anymore. It is no longer a popular topic. Perhaps we have become so accustomed to God’s blessings that we have forgotten that there will be a day when we will stand before our Savior and give an account to Him of every deed - good or bad - that we have ever done. Let us never forget that.

While this took courage for David to ask God to examine him, he had no fear or apprehension. Why? Because he was “aware of God’s unfailing love” that far exceeds His judgment and certain punishment.

What a great example for each of us!

Todd County 4-H News Youth and Family Connections The 2014 Todd County 4-H Achievement Program was held Saturday evening, November 22, at the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle High School. More than 175 area organizations, businesses and individuals sponsored numerous awards to deserving 4-H’ers and their leaders.

The Burtrum Boosters/Highland 4-H Club was honored as “Most Active Club” during the 2013-2014 4-H Club Year.

4-H pins were given to 4-H leaders and members for completion of varying years of service.

Dorothy Strassburg, Burtrum Boosters/Highland, received the Ruby Pin Award for 50 years of Adult Leadership.

Burtrum Boosters/Highland members receiving honorary pins for successfully completing ten years of 4-H work in Todd County was Megan Hollermann.

A: Turkeys are another species of wildlife that have adapted to living in close proximity to people. Prohibitions on hunting, the relative lack of predators, and the abundant food sources found in urban and suburban landscapes contribute to high reproductive success and low mortality for turkeys and other wildlife.

The preservation of nearby natural areas, including river corridors, wetlands, parks and backyards, provides habitat for wildlife species that many people feel contribute to a higher urban quality of life.

What is a Fair & Profitable Farm Rental Agreement?

Landlords, Farmers, Agri-Business Professionals should make plans to attend one of the informative meetings being held across Central and Southern Minnesota. Local meetings will be held on: December 11 at 9:30 a.m., at Initiative Foundation, Little Falls, and December 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Browerville Community Center, Browerville.

These free meetings are being provided by the University of Minnesota Extension. Farm land rental rates have never been higher and determining a fair farm rent agreement is a challenge in today’s economy with current significantly lower corn and soybeans prices in 2014 and 2015 compared to recent record corn and soybean prices and record farm land values.

Negotiating a fair rental agreement that satisfies the land owner and the farmer is a challenge.

David Bau, Extension Educator in Ag Business Management, will provide several ways; by examples, factsheets and worksheets to determine a fair farm land rental rate for both parties.

Topics covered at the meetings will include local historic and projected farmland rental rate trends, current farm land values and sales, a worksheet that will help determine a fair and profitable rental agreement. Input costs for 2015 will be pre-

sented along with current 2015 corn and soybean prices. Worksheets will examine 2015 costs and what is affordable rent that a farmer will be able to pay in 2015, the rate of return to the landlord at current market values and examine flexible rental agreements.

Like you, I’ve seen numerous reports of the price of generic medication cost increasing 3 or 4 fold in a month. There are several possible reasons including industry consolidation and supply-chain issues. Regardless of why prices are increasing, patients like you and me could be paying a lot more money. Here are a few things we can do to help control costs: • Make sure you’re signed up for the correct insurance.

It’s open enrollment time for both the insurance exchanges and private insurance. Check your insurance provider’s approved drug list against your current medications. The insurance company’s list is called a formulary. Ask your pharmacist for help interpreting the list and choosing the best plan. In addition to being medication experts, pharmacists have become adept at navigating the world of insurance. A plan with a higher premium may save you money long term if the prescription medications cost less than on cheaper plans.

• Take all your medication as prescribed.

Sounds simple, right? By taking a whole course of antibiotics, you’ll significantly reduce the chances of a reinfection. The same goes for your daily medication for asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and many other chronic conditions. Taking that medicine will help you avoid costly complications down the road.

• Don’t split pills until you talk with your pharmacist.

There are some cases where splitting pills can harm you. For medication to work properly, there needs to be enough of it in your body at one time.

If it doesn’t reach that critical level, the medication is not helping.

• Talk to your pharmacist about alternatives.

In some cases there may be another less expensive medication which will work. Pharmacists can recommend different medications to your prescriber.

There may also be brand name medications available with manufacturer discount cards which reduce your cost.

I encourage all patients to get to know their pharmacists. These men and women have spent years in school learning about medications. Their knowledge and expertise will help you live a healthy life.

Sons of Norway Culture Day Join us for the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club program, Sons of Norway Culture Day, scheduled for Wednesday, December 10, at 9 a.m.

The presentation coincides with the Museum’s exhibit, “New Land, New Life: Norwegian Immigration in Minnesota, 1825-1925.”

Nearly 850,000 Norwegians settled in Minnesota by the early 20th Century, leaving behind a country that was experiencing overpopulation and difficult economic conditions. Attendees will be introduced to what these immigrants brought with them - culture and traditions. Tolly Vollen will speak about sports and skiing; Rosemary Roehl will share the weaving and crafts tradition; Frank Roehl will discuss immigration; and Jean Marthaler will talk about genealogy. The engaging presentations share the story of how Norwegians played a significant role in shaping Minnesota’s history.

Refreshments are served. The Museum is located at 235-33rd Ave. S in St. Cloud.

Creative crafting class led by Jan Gerth will show children how to use rubber stamps, decorative scissors and paper crafting techniques to make holiday cards. Cocoa and snacks will be served. The attendance limit is 15 and registration is required.
