Take your attitude on a positive spin -By Harvey Mackay One day a professor announced a surprise test.

He distributed a paper to each student with the front side face down. Then he asked the class to turn over the page and start the test, but there were no questions on the paper – just a black dot in the center of the page.

“I want you to write a few lines about what you see on the paper,” the professor said.

Puzzled, the students started the test.

Once everyone finished, the professor collected all the tests and started reading the answers out loud. Without exception, all the students had written about the black dot, mentioning its position, size and so on.

The teacher told the students: “None of you will be graded on this test. I just wanted you to ponder over something.

All of you wrote about the black dot.

No one wrote about the white part of the paper. The same thing happens in our lives. We all have a white paper to observe and learn from, yet we always focus on the dark spots. We have so many reasons to celebrate, our parents, coworkers, friends, good health, a good job, the miracles we witness every day, for example.

“However, we often limit our horizons by focusing on just the dark spots – our disappointments, our frustrations, our fears and anxieties. In our day-today lives, we tend to take so many good things for granted and focus our energy on insignificant failure and disappointments.

“Take your eyes away from the black dots of your life. Try and focus on the brighter side of life and let positivity govern your thoughts.”

I consider Norman Vincent Peale’s book, “The Power of Positive Thinking,” one of the best motivational books ever written. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and success.

Whatever the mind expects, it finds.

I frequently promote this book in my speeches and writings, because even though it was published in 1952, the advice is timeless. Positivity is one of those attitudes that never changes.

One of my favorite aphorisms goes like this: Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

If you think positively, you will be more inclined to speak positively. Your positive words will spur you to positive actions. If you get used to behaving in a positive way, you will form good habits.

And your habits will help define the kind of person you are. That will lead you to your destiny: what you will eventually become as a person.

Positive thinking has no negatives.

Both personal and professional relationships benefit from a positive approach. By all means, surround yourself with positive people; support each other when the urge to be negative threatens.

Sometimes that’s not so easy to do in a professional setting. Difficult customers or co-workers can drag you down. Direct your efforts toward diffusing difficult situations or refusing to fall into their trap.

Successful businesses thrive on customer satisfaction, not hostility.

Would you rather do business with a positive person or someone who finds fault at every turn? Conversely, do your customers find your dealings rewarding or tedious? Nothing chases business out the door faster than a contentious encounter.

If you can’t say yes to a deal, find a positive way to say no. “I’m sorry we can’t accommodate your request, but I’m going to call a friend who may be able to

help.” You aren’t turning away business; you are leaving a future customer with positive thoughts about your practices.

And they appreciate being treated with that kind of respect.

Here’s an extra benefit: Treating others well does wonders for your own self-respect. Sounds like a winning formula all around.

Let’s circle back to the black dot story.

I am fascinated with the ingenuity of the professor. Such a simple exercise is easily translated to so many life situations. We all have challenges that tempt us to focus on our own “black dots.” Try hard not to let them pepper your outlook. Consider this age-old story about finding the positive in the face of adversity.

Everyone advised David to forget about confronting the enormous giant Goliath, saying, “He’s so big, there’s no way you can win.”

David replied, “He’s so big, there’s no way I can miss.”

Mackay’s Moral: A positive approach rises above reproach.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne

Boxcars When World War II ended, there were thousands of service personnel returning home.

This created a housing crisis, since during the war, housing construction was greatly restricted.

These returning military personnel had put their futures on hold for as long as 4 years and were definitely ready to either start a family or resume a family situation with the family they had just been able to rejoin.

They needed a home and there were few available. They did not have either the time or the money to to build a home, so they were forced to find a solution to their problem with shelters that were already constructed.

In the aftermath of the hurricane in New Orleans, the government purchased large numbers of temporary mobile dwellings for the city’s victims. But after the war the government didn’t feel responsible to create housing for it’s citizens. The war had depleted the government’s pocketbook. In those days the government didn’t feel it was their obligation to finance every citizen’s needs and concerns. The mobile home that we are very familiar with today had not really yet been created.

At the war’s end, there was a change

in our railroads. The steam locomotive was slowly being phased out and being replaced by diesel, electric powered locomotives, which were more powerful and the types of railroad cars they pulled were very different from the boxcars. Tanker cars and flat-bed cars, able to carry fully loaded semi trailers, took the place of box cars.

The trailers were loaded with their load at the factory, moved to the railroad flatbed, pulled onto the flat-bed, taken to the destination city, pulled off the flat-bed and hauled to the destination. This eliminated a lot of loading and unloading of the boxcars, greatly reducing labor costs.

There was soon a large number of unused boxcars. This became part of the solution to the housing problem.

Individuals could purchase the boxcars very reasonably and it wasn’t expensive to move them to the desired location where they were turned into a new home. They were able to shed water and could create shelter from cool weather. If the boxcar was delivered in the spring, the new owner was able to insulate, create a couple of windows and sheet off the inside before the coming winter and all the while have an immediate shelter for the family.

Boxcars were used by both agriculture and industry for storage, but the use of boxcars for dwelling purposes helped temporarily solve a critical housing problem.

Tony W. Schinske, 81, of Long Prairie, passed away November 25, 2020 at CentraCare Hospital in Long Prairie from complications of COVID-19.

Tony was born March 5, 1939, to parents Emil “Reiny” and Hazel (Howes) Schinske in Long Prairie. As a teenager Tony enjoyed working in his parents’ “Delight Shoppe”. He served in the US Army National Guard and was united in marriage to Janet Kuehne. They moved to Rockford, IL where he was employed painting guided missile parts; later moving to Burtrum. Tony was a farmer and livestock dealer, he was well known and respected throughout the area. After retirement they settled in Long Prairie and enjoyed the winters in Harlingen, TX where he continued to become friends with all who knew him.

Tony will be remembered for his kindness, easy smile, and quick wit. He enjoyed old cars, fishing, hunting and especially golf; twice achieving a hole in one!

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Long Prairie, charter member of the Lions Club of Grey Eagle & Burtrum, and a member of the American Legion of Long Prairie.

In addition to his wife of 63 years, Janet, Tony is survived by daughters Jeanne (Mark) Buchholz of Sioux Falls, SD; and Joni Schinske of St. Petersburg, FL; 5 grandchildren; 5 greatgrandchildren; siblings Ron (Tomoko) Schinski of Japan; and Susan (Al Frisch) Schinske of Minneapolis, nieces and nephews, as well as many other relatives.

Tony was preceded in death by his parents.

A small military graveside service will be held at 11AM, December 3rd at the Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Officiated by Pastor Noah Wehrspann of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Juliana M. Kettler, age 97 of Melrose, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, November 28, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, December 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

A public visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Juliana Mary Leukam was born March 26, 1923 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to George and Rose (Berling) Leukam.

On May 4, 1948 she married Leander Kettler at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove. They moved out on a farm three miles west of Melrose and raised six children. She helped Leander on the farm for close to 25 years and sold seed corn for Trojan Seed Company. They also sprayed fields for many farmers until their retirement in 1998.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, and Saint Elizabeth’s Society. Juliana’s hobbies included sewing quilts, yo-yo pillows, scrapbooking, making grottos, praying the rosary, reading, canning, and was a member of the Apostolate of Fatima. She was so strong in her faith and would pray for so many people. She was the best mother and grandmother you could ever have; we will all miss her dearly.

Survivors include her children, Dave (Liz) Kettler, Mary (Hussein) Ansari, Gary Kettler, Maynard (Sheila) Kettler, Carol (Pete) Kulzer, and Linda (Mike) Kraemer; 14 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren with one on the way.

Juliana was preceded in death by her husband, Leander Kettler on April 15, 2009; parents; grandson, Jordan Kettler in 2009; brother, Alcuin Leukam; and sister, Eleanore Meyer.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Melrose for several years before retiring. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and a volunteer at Melrose Hospital and Pine Villa Nursing Home. She enjoyed listening and dancing to old time music, baking, embroidery, quilting, crocheting, and praying the rosary.

Survivors include her children, Jane Saboe of Spicer and Neil (Kelly) Overman of Peculiar, Missouri; grandchildren, Dana, Amanda, Katelyn, Justin, Mathew, and Derrick; great-grandchildren, Nefertari, Sasha, and Tobias; brothers and sisters Teresa Sybrant, Leona Cheney, Marilyn Heath, Gene Bolster and Harry Bolster.

Darlene M. Kulzer

Darlene M. Kulzer, age 76 of Greenwald, died peacefully on November 23, 2020, at the St. Cloud Hospital, surrounded by family.

Darlene Marie Dingman was born November 7, 1944 in St. Cloud to Andrew & Elizabeth (Schroden) Dingman. Darlene grew up on a farm near Mayhew Lake until she married Anthony (Tony) Kulzer in 1966 and moved to the farm south of Greenwald, where she and Tony raised four children and operated a small dairy. She and Tony were married for 54 years when Tony passed away in July of this year after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Darlene enjoyed time with family, visits to the farm, baking and cooking for loved ones, trips to the casino, quilting, and playing cards or Scrabble with family and friends. She was

LaVerne C. Winter, age 83 of Greenwald, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2020, at her home in Greenwald, surrounded by her family after a short battle with cancer.

L a Ve r n e Catherine (Haskamp) Winter was born on September 14, 1937 in Melrose, Minnesota to Joseph and Regina (Yarke) Haskamp. LaVerne grew up near Meire Grove until she was united in marriage to Edward Winter on June 11, 1958 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

She and Edward were married for 46 years until Edward passed away in 2004.

LaVerne was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald and the St. Andrew’s Christian Mothers. LaVerne loved the Lord and showed it by leading the rosary, attending and watching Mass daily. LaVerne was also a member of the Elrosa Senior Citizens.

She enjoyed spending time on senior trips with friends going to casino’s, shows, tours and plays.

LaVerne was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved to spend time with her

Edward “Eddie” L. Jendro, 92 year old resident of Elmdale, MN passed away Monday, November 30, 2020 at the St. Cloud VA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, December 7, 2020 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father Albert Holmes officiating and Father David Grundman concelebrating. After being honorably discharged as Sergeant, he bought a farm near Elmdale where he lived his whole life. He was united in marriage to DeLoris Motzko on November 11, 1958, and together they raised their 5 children. He was a hard-working farmer and construction worker who enjoyed the outdoors and the animals around him, whether it was cows, deer, dogs, cats or squirrels, he got joy out of watching them and the way they would play. Edward was a quiet soul with a giving heart and would help anyone who needed it. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Gwendolynne was born on January 9, 1932 to Harold and Vivian (Hill) Meschke in Little Falls, MN where she graduated from High School. She married Albert Lemke February 17, 1952. The couple became owners/operators of the Home Bakery in Henning and in 1970 they moved to Long Prairie where they operated Hilltop Turkey Farm. She was enthusiastic about anything to do with turkeys and was involved with the “Gal Gobblers”. Albert passed away in 2006. In her later years, she married Rev. William Stockman

Virginia M. Salzl, age 89 of St. Rosa, passed away Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at Mother of Mercy in Albany, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, December 2 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Interment was in the parish

cemetery.

Virginia Marie Wehseler was born January 2, 1931 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to John and Elizabeth (Doll) Wehseler. On October 11, 1950 she was united in marriage to Sylvester Salzl at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. The couple farmed in Millwood Township. Along with being a homemaker and raising seven children, Virginia kept the “home fires burning” throughout the years on the farm while Sylvester worked off the farm. Virginia with the help of the kids, was the foundation of the many daily chores of the dairy farm. She cooked and baked countless hours. Her family ate many a loaf of her excellent homemade bread along with pies, cookies, and jelly. Every Sunday there was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, and pie on the table. In the most recent years, Virginia’s life was greatly enhanced by the many thoughtful and compassionate caregivers who cared for her including those at Park View in Melrose, Mother of Mercy in Albany, and Moments Hospice of St. Cloud.

Virginia was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa and the Christian Mothers.

Gwen enjoyed baking and canning produce from her garden. Her faith was apparent in the way she lived her life. She generously volunteered her time and talents to her local church, Ladies Aid, Orphan Grain Train and several other organizations. Her travel, which she loved, was often to church conventions. She was always willing to help others but received special joy when she could lend a hand to her children or grandchildren. She cherished spending time with family and friends, those were her favorite things to do.

She will be deeply missed by her daughters Cindy (Jerry) Ager and Kim (Todd) Borgstrom both of Long Prairie; her brother Garth (Marie) Meschke of Little Falls; grandchildren, Brandon (Emily), Benjamin and Abby Borgstrom, Ryan (Nicole) Ager, Jamie Toenyan, Sarah (Trent) Carr and Michael (Brittany) Ager and 12 great grandchildren.

Burnhamville Township • October 27, 2020 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held October 27, 2020 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit, Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky and Treasurer Pam Throener. Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of September 29, 2020 were approved as presented on a motion by Sup. Johnson and was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township received letter from City of Swanville stating their wellhead project was approved and letters about upcoming election requirements.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5987 through 6004: Rev. $22,772.17; R & B $13,738.08. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

With the general election on November 3 with board will set up the booths on Monday at 4 pm.

The retention pond in Oak Ridge Preserve was repaired.

With winter weather here the board discussed snow plowing contracts. Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the snow contract for 2020-21

from Herdering, Inc. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. Motion passed with all voting in favor.

The board discussed how to spend the CARES Grants funds. Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve resolution 2020-2 to turn over remainder of CARES Grant funds to the county. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

In the road report the contractor installed culvert on Essex Trail/ 321st Ave, beaver damaged culvert on 162nd St and monitor beaver damage on 180th St. Swanville Lions and Sportsman Club donated money to fix Bass Lake public access.

With water level high the access will have to be monitored for improvements. With the early snow the snow plow drivers had issues. There was a complaint of snow plow damaging a yard when the truck got stuck. Contractor hopes to grade roads again after snow melts to get ready for winter.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $49,839.53. Sup. Berscheit motioned to approve and Sup. Muellner seconded motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 7:49 p.m. Next regular meeting will be on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the Burtrum Community Center.

House Republican Education Leads Call for Statewide Progress Report on Academic Achievement During Pandemic House GOP Education Leads Rep. Sondra Erickson, R-Princeton, and Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, are requesting that the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) provide a statewide status report on student academic achievement. The request comes after a report from KARE 11 revealed that, with the first quarter of the school year almost complete, nearly 40% of grades for high school students in the St. Paul Public School District are failing.

“This news from the St. Paul Public School District illustrates the significant damage COVID-19 restrictions and school

closures are having on Minnesota students,” said Rep. Sondra Erickson. “Sadly, it appears that the academic trajectory of an entire generation of students will be stunted because of disruptions caused by the pandemic. Now, more than ever, we need to come to a full understanding of the harm being done to students so that we can try and change course before it is too late.”

“This information is essential so that we can see how students are being impacted,” said Rep. Ron Kresha. “These students are the future, and we need to make sure that we are not failing them. We need to know the full scope of how distance and hybrid learning are impacting achievement as soon as possible so we can change tactics as needed and help our students succeed in spite of this current crisis.”

Erickson and Kresha are asking MDE to compile data to demonstrate the impact hybrid and distance learning models are having on academic achievement in hopes of tailoring state policy to better respond to the educational needs of students.

Avoid a Holiday Hangover… From Overspending

Christmas is coming! Everywhere you look there’s a good deal to be had. And this year, most people aren’t even going to the stores, but that won’t stop the sales from coming to you.

They’re showing up in your inbox, just sitting in your pocket waiting for you. With the click of a button, items will magically show up on your doorstep.

After a roller coaster of a year, we need to be more intentional than ever with holiday spending. Now, don’t get me wrong. I want you to enjoy this season. I want you to have some nice stuff. I just don’t want stuff to have you. Here are a few tips to avoid an overspending holiday hangover: Have a list of wants vs. needs It’s easy to spend money on the wrong priorities, especially around Christmas.

Keep all your items in two categories: wants and needs. Take care of your needs first, then see what money is left over in the budget. Be grown up enough to tell a want it needs to wait.

Make a budget Write out a budget for what you can afford to spend, not what you want to spend.

When it comes to Christmas shopping, make a detailed list of who you’re buying for and put a specific dollar amount by their name. And don’t forget all the extra parties and travel expenses that come up this time of year.

Don’t sign up for a guilt trip Christmas might look different this

year, and that’s okay. If you lost your job, don’t feel guilty because you can’t spoil the little ones like normal. On the flip side, let your friends and family off the hook if they can’t afford to exchange gifts or travel to see you. Let’s choose to support each other.

Watch out for emotional spending The holidays bring up all sorts of feelings. It’s the easiest time of year to justify overspending, because we’re in a celebratory mood. But there’s also a lot of stress.

Don’t go shopping if you’re feeling lonely, feeling sorry for yourself, or you’re just plain bored. Also, if you think you want to drop a lot of cash on a big purchase, wait at least 24 hours before you make your decision to avoid impulse buying.

Be on guard when you’re online Marketers are smart. But remember, seeing the same ad over and over for that fancy watch you’ve had your eye on doesn’t mean it’s meant to be. Don’t let their target marketing knock you off your target goal of making your financial dreams a reality.

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we need to focus on what we can control.

This is a chance to regain some lost ground, and do things differently. By being intentional with holiday spending, you’ll avoid waking up to an empty bank account in January—and you’ll make progress toward your wealth-building goals!

Take caution around open water, newly formed ice With the continued surge in the number of people recreating outdoors this year, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that lakes and ponds across the state have started to freeze, and where there isn’t ice, the water is dangerously cold.

Ice thickness is highly variable at this time of year and subject to Mother Nature’s whims. Even where there isn’t ice, the water is so cold that an unexpected fall in can be deadly. It is vital to talk with children, who are naturally curious about the water, about staying safe.

“The first ice-fishing trip of the season is exciting, but there’s no fish that is worth falling through the ice,” said Rodmen Smith, director of the DNR Enforcement Division. “Vigilance around the water at this time of year isn’t just a good idea – it’s an absolute necessity.”

Anglers and others who recreate on the ice should stay on shore until there’s at least 4 inches of new, clear ice. Anytime people are on the ice, they should check it’s thickness every 150 feet. Smith urges people to check ice thickness for themselves rather than deciding to walk on the ice based on what they’ve heard or read.

Each year, unexpected falls into cold water lead to serious injury and death.

Wearing a life jacket is the best way to avert tragedy, since the initial shock of falling into cold water can incapacitate even strong swimmers. Carrying a good set of

ice picks can help a person get out if they fall through the ice, and a cell phone, whistle or other communications device makes it more likely they will be able to call for help.

General ice safety guidelines No ice can ever be considered “safe ice,” but following these guidelines can help minimize the risk: Always wear a life jacket or float coat on the ice (except when in a vehicle).

Carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel and tape measure.

Check ice thickness at regular intervals; conditions can change quickly.

Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon.

Don’t go out alone; let someone know about trip plans and expected return time.

Before heading out, inquire about conditions and known hazards with local experts.

The minimum ice thickness guidelines for new, clear ice are: 4 inches for ice fishing or other activities on foot.

5-7 inches for a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle.

8-12 inches for a car or small pickup.

12-15 inches for a medium truck.

Double these minimums for white or snow-covered ice.

Dear Motor Medics, I have been working on a project with my son for his first vehicle. We purchased a nice looking 2003 GMC 2500 truck with a 350 engine and 4-wheel drive and automatic transmission.

We have done a lot of work over the past two years including brakes, tires, shocks, lift kit and a completely rebuilt engine. We opted for a Edelbrock intake manifold and mild cam and now we are questioning the exhaust. He wants something louder and we are thinking headers and no converters.

Will this effect the way the engine runs? Is it illegal to take off the converters?

A truck like this lends itself to economical parts and upgrades with lots of choices.

The upgrades you are doing inside the engine with the cam and the intake manifold outside will help it breath and adding free flowing exhaust will also help. Removing the converters is not a good idea as it is not legal, and more states are starting to enforce missing emissions system parts by not allowing registration. There are emissions system legal headers available that will work with a free-flowing converter and you can get the exhaust sound you want. Once you have it running and ready to drive, a trip to a tuner shop with the specs for the cam for a custom tune can really wake it up.

Where do I start to get it going again?

As with any engine that has been sitting without running for many years, you will have your hands full for a while. It also depends on how well it was put up for storage if anything was done at all. Proper storage will greatly shorten the start up time. Consult with a local bike shop for a full list but expect to do things like making sure the engine is not locked up, checking for rust in the carb and fuel tank and replacing fuel lines and the battery. Have fun with it.
