Getting a Job is a Job -By Harvey Mackay A recruiter asked a job candidate, “Why did you leave your last job?”

The job applicant replied, “It was something my boss said.”

“What did he say?”

“You’re fired.”

This person definitely needs a copy of my new book – “Getting a Job is a Job” – which comes out Jan. 5. In it, I focus on bouncing back after being fired, dealing with rejection and the emotions people feel. And I explain why you can’t take it personally.

The book is chockful of helpful hints on not only getting a job but landing the job you want. Job hunting is a contact sport.

You might have to work eight days a week.

Networking is so important, and it’s even harder during a pandemic. But there are still effective ways to get out there. Be visible.

Keeping a low profile is for people ducking bullets. With LinkedIn, Facebook and other social media platforms, networking has never been easier. The key is to use them properly.

For example, you will get great insights from one of the smartest guys I know when it comes to finding information on the Internet’s “Invisible Web.” I would highly recommend you check out Sam Richter, president of SBR Worldwide, at samrichter. com. He has taught me how to take the cold out of cold calling by finding important information on the people you might be interviewing with or the decision-makers at companies.

The Mackay 66 Customer Profile, which I wrote about in my first book, “Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive,” has never been more important. You need to learn about interests of people and what turns them on. If you can do this well, your odds of landing a job will go up dramatically. The Mackay 66 is available free on my website, www.harveymackay.com.

And don’t overlook the importance of gatekeepers, the assistants who control access to the people you need to connect with. They are invaluable. Getting through the fence to the top dog is easy if you know the gatekeeper.

I share helpful information on résumés that help you resume employment, such as what terminology to use to describe your experiences that make sense to both software and human readers.

Because many people have a section in their résumé that is constantly questioned, there’s also a chapter on addressing chinks in your armor because flaws scar you worst when you can’t or won’t explain them.

Do you have an elevator pitch? If not, you need to develop one that sizzles, is dead accurate and is crystal clear. Think of it as 30 seconds that will inform and influence.

I also devote a lot of space to prepping for job interviews, what questions to ask and what to listen for. Be perceptive, not contentious. Read the walls and desks. Even though you are not interviewing for a sales job, you are always selling yourself.

Second interviews are even more important. You should prepare rigorously.

Recall topic threads from your earlier conversation to identify themes you can build on. Remember, the closer you get, the harder they’ll look.

If you get a job offer, know what you can and cannot negotiate. Do your homework to get superior information. Stay calm.

Anticipate questions. Learn to be a spin doctor and finesse questions. The smartest thing you often can do in any negotiation is to keep your mouth shut and your eyes and ears wide open.

I conclude the book with a toolkit that includes the Mackay Sweet 16 for acing first impressions, the Mackay 44 Interview Checklist and the Mackay 22 Post-Interview Wrap Up. Done right, getting that next job is hard work.

Many people have lost their jobs due to the current pandemic but this situation may present new opportunities. The famous British author Somerset Maugham told this story about the janitor at St. Peter’s Church in London who was fired when it was discovered he was illiterate.

Jobless, the man invested his meager savings in a tiny tobacco shop where he immediately prospered. He then opened another shop and another and soon owned a large chain of tobacco stores all over Britain.

One day he was dining in a fancy club with his banker who observed, “You’ve done quite well for an illiterate man. I wonder where you would be today if you could read and write.”

“That’s easy,” replied the man, “I’d still be the janitor in St. Peter’s Church.”

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne John Deere Show

It had already been a long, snowy and cold winter.

You were tired of pulling on the coveralls, bib overhauls four buckle overshoes and mackinaw every time you went outdoors, which happened about 6 times per day. The only breaks in the work schedule were taking the eggs to town once per week, picking up groceries about every 10 days and making the run to the produce for some needed cattle feed or a weekly trip to church.

Due to the winter driving conditions, unnecessary travel was postponed until the weather warmed up. The narrow winter roads were usually plowed, but spreading gravel on the icy spots was still pretty much in the future. The ditches were deep and steep and since there were very few 4-wheel drive vehicles, hitting the ditch was an invitation to shoveling, pushing and putting chains on the wheels. Although you dressed warmly for the trip to town and had extra quilts in the back seat, your warm clothing was either too warm or too cool for shoveling the car out of the ditch. Maybe a neighbor would be traveling past your stuck car and would help shovel and push. I guess next time it would be best to put on the chains before the

trip and ask grandma if there was any snow expected.

In the middle of the boredom, there was a beam of light. A couple Saturdays from now was the John Deere Show. It was definitely an occasion planned for male farm guys. You knew what was on the program schedule, since you had attended the big show in previous years and it always seemed to be the same. It actually seemed to be more anticipated than the state fair. It was definitely a welcome break in the routine.

You would get the silage down and clean the gutters by noon, so you wouldn’t miss any of the fun. You didn’t eat dinner at home, since there were always hot dogs, potato chips and pop, milk and coffee at the show. It was an opportunity to see some schoolmates and friends dressed in clean farm-work clothes. After eating your fill of hot dogs, it was time for the show to start.

The show started with a word of welcome from the local John Deere dealer, followed by a speaker that really didn’t have a message, but brought some good stories. These stories were usually a little more interesting, since the audience was primarily men.

Now the show started, showing all of the new and exciting machinery available.

(Actually, looking back, the really new, advanced machinery would now appear at an antique farm machinery show.) It was really new and exciting at the time.

After seeing the new machinery, the same farm family of actors put on the new show. It followed them through some family difficulty and finished with the problem being solved and Old Dad’s wisdom prevailed. Pretty much the same show as previous years, but since it followed the same family each year, one actually looked forward to seeing how things were going for that familiar family this year.

Time to get home and do chores with some new stories and ideas to discuss in the barn, at the supper table and with your friends at the next get-together.

Shed Fire: December 25, 2020: At 9:39 p.m., deputies responded to 24634 County Road 17 in Krain Township for a building fire. A shed on the south side of the property was on fire. The Freeport Fire Department responded to the call and extinguished the fire. The Albany and Melrose Ambulance service also assisted at the scene. The eastern portion of the 30x60 shed was heavily damaged. Inside the shed was a wood furnace that heated the residence. It is believed the fire was ignited by or near the wood furnace. A 1980’s John Deere tractor and miscellaneous tools were inside the shed and damaged. The property is owned

by Leo and Bernadine Ettle of Freeport.

December 26, 2020: At approximately 4:58 p.m., received the report of a side-byside ATV that had fallen through the ice on the north end of Two Rivers Lake in Holding Township. Cory Hanson, 42, and Lori Hanson, 44, Avon, had been operating their 2017 Polaris Ranger side by side ATV on the far north end of the lake. While in this area they broke through a section of thin ice.

Both were able to escape the sinking ATV and make it safely out of the water to a nearby icehouse. The ATV is submerged in what is believed to be approximately 27 feet of water. The area had open water and recently froze over due to waterfowl in the area. Hanson has made arrangements with a private tow service to have the ATV removed from the lake.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone to be cautions on lake ice and to be sure of ice thickness in

areas that they may be traveling on. Several lakes in the area, Two Rivers, Big Fish and Middle Spunk, to name several, have had recent waterfowl activity that would potentially cause areas of thin ice.

December 27, 2020: At approximately 2:00 p.m., Michael Tiemann, 61, of Grey Eagle was riding his 2000 Artic Cat 600 snowmobile, south, along the east side of Little Birch Lake in Melrose Township. He was with his son and daughter-in-law who were on their own sled. Tiemann was riding approximately 20 feet from shore when his sled broke through the ice and became partially submerged. He stayed on the machine while his son returned to his house to retrieve a strap to pull it out. As he was returning with the strap, Tiemann was able to get off the snowmobile safely with the assistance if his daughter-in-law. Once he was off, the snowmobile broke completely through the ice and sank to the bottom in approximately six feet of water. Tiemann was not injured during this incident and was wearing a helmet. Tiemann planned to remove the snowmobile on December 28th.

James B. “Jim” Schrader

James B. “Jim” Schrader, age 82 of Albany, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Community in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.

A memorial graveside service will be held at a later date in Bearhead Cemetery.

J a m e s Benjamin Schrader was born July 2, 1938 in Long Prairie, Minnesota to John and Mary (Cromwell) Schrader. He was united in marriage to Julia Nokes in August of 1967 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Bertha.

Jim worked as a meat cutter at a sheep packing plant in Washington state and worked as a milkman truck driver in Long Prairie. He later worked at Landy Packing Meat Company in St. Cloud and at Fingerhut. Jim was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albany where he served as an usher and as a trustee. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding horses and driving a team of horses, going to rodeos, camping, and trail riding.

Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years, Julia Schrader of Albany; children, Lisa Schrader and Eric (Jennifer) Schrader; nine grandchildren; and brothers, LeRoy (Carol) Schrader and Frank (JoAnn) Schrader.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Schrader.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Irene Margaret Stern

Irene Stern, 90-year-old resident of Willmar, formerly of Upsala passed away Sunday, December 20 at the Copperleaf Senior Living in Wilmar.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, December 28, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, Minnesota. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Irene Margaret (Kveton) Stern was born on August 6, 1930, the youngest of 5 children to John and Emma (Sadlo) Kveton of rural Browerville, Minnesota. She graduated from Staples High school and then chose to attend St. Cloud Teachers College obtaining a two-year teaching degree. Irene’s teaching career took her to school districts in Anoka, Holdingford and Upsala. In the mid-1970s while teaching in Upsala and raising her family, Irene returned to St. Cloud State University and obtained her bachelor’s degree in education. Altogether she spent 30 years in education and loved watching her students grow and learn. Her dedication to education also included 10 years with the Adult Basic Education program helping individuals obtain their GED diploma. She was honored to be recognized by the Upsala School District as Teacher of the Year in 1982-’83.

On November 22, 1952 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Browerville, Irene married Robert (Bob) Stern. This union would be blessed with two beautiful daughters, Patti and Julie. The couple raised their family in Upsala where they were both active in their community and church.

Early in their marriage while living in Upsala, Bob and Irene were involved in the efforts to establish a Catholic church in Upsala now known as St. Mary’s. Irene led life by example teaching religious education classes for 20 years, volunteering and serving in leadership capacity with the Daughter’s of Isabella, Catholic Aid

Arthur R. Durene, 88 year old, long-time resident of Holdingford, MN, fulfilled his appointment in Heaven on Christmas Day, December 25th, 2020 at his home near Mahtowa, MN. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be a private memorial service for immediate family

Arthur was born March 14, 1932 to Rune and Menda Durene near Round Prairie, MN. He married Marvis (Gunion) on September 10, 1955. Art served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was known for his craftsmanship and was called “The Man Who Can Build Anything”. He was a part of starting D.C.I in Holdingford (now in St. Cloud) then was owner/operator of Durene Heating and Cooling for more than 40 years.

Art enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors, making maple syrup, building things in his shop, and spending time with friends and family.

Art loved to joke around and tease his grand and great-grandkids. He was a strong man of God whose life radiated integrity and honesty. He will be greatly missed by his family and the many people he touched throughout his life.

Art is survived by his wife, Marvis; daughter, Nancy (Bob Grawey); sons, Mark (Janie) Durene, Mike (Belinda) Durene, Verlyn Durene, and Larry (Lisa) Durene. He is also survived by 11 grandkids and 19 great-grandkids; sisters, Marilynn Lent and Sally Gunion.

Association and was a charter member of the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Upsala American Legion Auxiliary, Upsala Planning Commission as well as volunteering in many other capacities.

In retirement, Irene and Bob enjoyed winters in Arizona. She enjoyed golfing, learning to play bridge, and gathering with friends for potlucks in the community room. Irene’s hobbies included knitting afghans, making quilts and gardening.

She took great joy in mowing her lawn, planting and maintaining her vegetable garden and flower beds and she often shared the fruits of her labor with her family and the community. She loved to bake and cook.

Irene loved her family. She looked forward to holidays like Christmas when she would plan and prepare a huge feast and gather her family around the table. A full table surrounded with family would make her heart shine with love and gratefulness.

She is survived by her daughters, Patti (Darrell) Tschida of Willmar, Julie (Jesse) Vouk of Oak Grove; grandchildren, Sarah Tasto, Nicholas Tasto, Rachel Vouk, Trevor (Lexi) Tschida; great-grandchildren, Ivory Tasto, Kassandra Tschida and Christopher Tschida; many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents; siblings, George (Lorraine) Kveton, Larry (Ruth) Kveton, Betty (Frank) Tichy and Grace (John) Ludovissie.

Rodney “Rod” O. Bollin

Rodney “Rod” O. Bollin, 50 year old resident of Grey Eagle, MN passed away Saturday, December 19, 2020 as a result of an accident at the shop.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Burial will take place at a later date.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on December 30, 2020.

Rodney “Hot Rod” was born on February 9, 1970, in Browerville, Minnesota, to Alfred and Rose “Kjeldergaard” Bollin. Rod was married to Jennette “Joyce” Moore on August 5, 1994, in Little Falls, Minnesota. Rod and Joyce had five children: Harly, Cheyenne, Mercedes, Sierra, and Colton. Rodney loved his children very much. Rodney worked at New Flyer as an alignment technician during the children’s early years. He then went to Central Specialties Inc. doing road construction as a broom operator until the children were in their teens. Rod and Joyce separated; his kindness was shown by the continuation of their friendship to the extent of weekly meals together. Upon the separation, Rod started working at Columbia Gear in Avon as a machinist. When Rod was not working, he enjoyed many hobbies, including riding horses, riding his motorcycles, fishing, and working on vehicles. He enjoyed cooking and grilling.

Rodney said he was “made of steel” and many that knew him called him “Superman” or “Invincible” because of all that he had survived through, including but not limited to FIVE heart attacks, a chainsaw to his leg, and

December 19, 2020: At 4:45 p.m. deputies responded to a farm accident at a residence on Ascot Rd. in Grey Eagle Township. The victim was identified as 50 year old Rodney Bollin of Grey Eagle. Bollin was working near a large air compressor when the compressor tank failed causing it to explode. Bollin sustained severe injuries as a result of the incident. The Grey Eagle Fire Dept. and Melrose Ambulance treated Bollin at the scene. Life Link helicopter was called to the scene and transported Bollin to the St. Cloud Hospital with life threatening injuries. The incident remains under investigation.

Karen R. Schwalbe

Karen R. (Ehrlichman) Schwalbe, age 79 of New Brighton, formerly of Holdingford, passed away peacefully Dec 27, 2020.

She was born to Elmer and Virginia (Genz) Ehrlichman. Karen was an active member of American Legion Post 513 and a past 10th District Auxiliary President. She enjoyed cooking and baking, bingo, and casino trips. She took great pride in raising her 4 children as a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by husband, Larry; and brother, George Ehrlichman.

She will be greatly missed by children, Brandt, Debra (Paul) Kozak, Bradley, Deanna (Mark) Kuhns; granddaughters, Sarina (Sam), Alexandra (Gavin), Samantha, Stephanie, Caitlyn, and Rachel; great-grandson, Tristen; brothers, Mike (Sandy), Ed, and David Ehrlichman; sister, Barbie (Joe) Lang; many nieces, nephews, and relatives.

Following COVID protocols, Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 Noon, Tuesday, Jan 5 with visitation one hour prior at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 835 2nd Ave NW, New Brighton. Private interment Fort Snelling.

Todd County 4-H • November 9th, 2020 Todd County 4-H Leaders Council meeting was held November 9th, 2020. Meeting was called to order at 7:42

by President Katrina Buntjer. The meeting was held via zoom due to Covid-19 numbers. The officer installation was done virtually for the first time ever. Members from the Golden Gophers, Lone Star, West Union Country Kids, and Wykeham Willing Workers were present.

Secretary’s report was read by Alexis Woeste. The treasurer’s report was presented by Debra Durheim, which was approved subject to audit. Alyssa Scheve talked to Andes Tower Hills about skiing and their Covid procedure is to wear masks at all times. The council approved 2020-2021 budget plans and scholarships. Debra Durheim was elected as the adult treasurer advisor. A fruit committee was established which included Debra Durheim, Robert Bromeling, Debbie Sauer, Delvin Durheim, Meri Carstensen, and Haylie Wielenberg.

An in-person officer training is being talked about.

Debbie Sauer and Alyssa Scheve are working on awards.

A committee was established to investigate changing the records, the members included are Katrina Buntjer, Caroline Kuehne, Haylie Wielenberg, Alexis Woeste, and Alyssa Scheve.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

There being no further comment the public hearing was closed at 6:11 p.m.

For the month of September 2020, the Department received 43 agency assist calls. The police department has received federal aid to conduct DWI, seat belt, and distracted driving enforcement.

City Attorney Scott Dymoke reported on projects he has been working on for the City: • Nuisance Abatement: Prepared proposed Council resolutions ordering abatement of nuisances.

• Relief Grant Application: Reviewed proposed Relief Grant Application and prepared revisions providing for guarantee of payment of reimbursements.

Community Development Director Atkinson provided an update on the year to date building permits. Ms. Atkinson also reported on the Small Business Assistance Grant Program.

Mike Nielson with WSB & Associates provided an update on the various city projects.

Pavement Management: Pavement cores are scheduled to be completed on Friday October 9, 2020. The results and recommendations should be ready within one week. Estimates will be completed and presented at the November council meeting.

WSB Project No. R-014036-000 – CR 65 Drainage Improvements -Contractor: Anderson Underground.

Anderson Underground has contracted with Molitor Excavation to make the necessary repairs. I contacted Molitor Excavating again and he has the work scheduled for October but has no specific date at this time.

WSB Project No. R-015456-000 2020 Street Improvements including 5th Street N, 4th St. N & 3rd Ave N At this time there are 2 items with one being a section of cracked sidewalk and the other being a section of curb and sidewalk that was supposed to be removed and replaced and was missed. These corrections will be completed in the spring of 2021 just in case there are more sections of concrete that crack this winter.

WSB Project No. R-015524-000 Casey’s South Site Inspection – The fence construction was the last item to be completed and on my way through town I stopped at the site and the work has been completed.

I did talk to Roger indicated that the row of evergreen trees planted on the west side of the fence at the west property line is within the electric easement but did not see the need to move any trees at this time. More attention needs to be paid to work within easements during plan review.

Multi Family Site Evaluation: I ran into Mitch Rengel and he asked when we were going to find them a spot to build.

2nd Street S and 3rd Ave SE Flooding Issue -5th Avenue Storm Sewer System We have provided a proposal to complete a feasibility study to alleviate the flooding in this area.

WSB Project No. R-015500-000 Melrose Road, Dam, and Bridge – Stream Analysis: - Moving forward with grading of the proposed river section between the dam and the bridge based on COE acceptance.

- Looking at alternatives to provide gentle slope along the embankment that will allow access for fishing opportunities. Currently we have rip rap under the bridge so it moving under the bridge will be difficult. Once we get confirmation, we can finalize grading for the segment between the dam and bridge and move forward with bridge hydraulics and bridge structure design.

- Meeting with DNR on 9/9/2020 to discuss updates to rivermorph proposed conditions downstream of the bridge based on their comments from 9/23/2020.

Structures: - No update since 5/14/20 project update.

- Submitted draft O&M to City on 3/16/2020.

- Dam inspection in October - A conversation is needed between WSB and City to complete information in the document regarding the City’s protocols that will be included in the document.

This conversation should occur before the inspection. We plan on inspection the dam between October 5 and 15.

If you want a City representative present, please let us know right away for scheduling.

- Need approval of the stream alignment and typical section prior to moving forward with detailed design.

- Coordination with the DNR is moving forward on the channel typical section at the bridge, as well as setting the channel bank typical section, i.e. pedestrian bench and creature crossing under bridge.

- Proposed grading plan between the dam and bridge is in process.

- We have initiated the discussions with MnDOT on the new bridge number. It should be the same as the previously designed bridge.

Fire Chief Tom Budde noted that the Melrose Fire Department in 2012, and the City of Melrose, as the guarantor for the Melrose Fire Department Retirement Program, entered into an agreement with PERA to manage the retirement program and funds for the Department.

At that time, there was a five-year lock at the $1,500 benefit level per firefighter. The program is funded by three primary areas: Fire State Aid, Investment Income and Municipal Contribution (if required). The City of Melrose has agreed to make an annual contribution of $8,200. As per the PERA bylaws, there is a five-year vesting into the program where no changes to the benefit level can occur. In 2017, the Melrose City Council approved an increase from $1,500 to $1,900. During 2018, the Council approved the increase in benefit to $2,200 per year. During 2019, the Council approved the increase in benefit to $2,300 per year. A review has been conducted again in 2020 by PERA Volunteer Firefighter Retirement Plan, and reviewed by the Fire Chief, Finance Director, and City Administrator for contribution levels of $2,400, $2,500, $2,600, and $2,700. The funding ratios for those benefit levels would be 113%, 110%, 107% and 104%, respectively. Based on this review, the fund would support all four options without a required contribution by the City. It is the Fire Chief’s recommendation to support a $300 increase to $2,600. Council Member Justin Frieler introduced Resolution No. 2020-40 A Resolution Option to Increase the Benefit Level for Firefighters Who Are Vested in the Voluntary Statewide Volunteer Firefighter (SVF) Retirement Plan. The motion was seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Members Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, and Klasen; AGAINST: None; ABSTAIN: Council Member Hill, and Mayor Finken due to a potential conflict of interest The Council reviewed and gave consideration to ordering the abatement of nuisance conditions on 121 3rd Street SE. Melrose MN Council Member Mark Hill introduced Resolution No. 2020-55, Ordering the Abatement of Nuisance Conditions Located at 121 3rd Street SE Melrose MN. The motion was seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Member: Hill, Travis Frieler, Justin Frieler, Klasen, and Mayor Finken; AGAINST: None Mayor Finken stated that the City is in the process of administering small-business assistance grants, largely utilizing CARES Act funds. A total of 24 applications were submitted of which 23 were eligible for grant funding. The City received $276,197 in CARES funding. Of this, the City retained $16,955 to reimburse for COVID-19 expenses “to make the City whole.” An additional $4,802.32 in funds, a portion of the City’s larger indirect reimbursable costs, is being retained by the City at this time. The entire remainder of the City’s CARES related funds, ($259,242) are being distributed to small businesses. Melrose Township has allocated their CARES Act funding to the City of Melrose to help our small businesses ($18,875). Stearns County has agreed to provide an additional $82,500 of their CARES Act funds but requires a subrecipient agreement with the City. Fire Chief Budde has received information that it is taking approximately 18 months to get trucks due to COVID-19. Chief Budde would like to start the process now with the plan of receiving the tanker by May 2022. The tanker is estimated to cost approximately $250,000. A motion was made by Mr. Travis Frieler approving to seek bids for the replacement tanker. Mr. Justin Frieler seconded the motion with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Member: Travis Frieler, Justin Frieler, Klasen, Hill and Mayor Finken; AGAINST: None Council Member Klasen left the meeting at 6:20 p.m.

Mayor Finken stated that WSB has prepared a proposed scope of services, engineering fee and time schedule for providing professional engineering services to complete a flood study for the area adjacent to 5th Avenue and Kraft Drive. The goal of the project is to reduce flood potential by evaluation stormwater storage options and storm sewer sizing in the area. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler approving the Feasibility Study for the area adjacent to 5th Avenue and Kraft Drive. The motion was seconded by Mr. Hill with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Member: Justin Frieler, Hill, Travis Frieler, and Mayor Finken; AGAINST: None; ABSENT: Council Member Klasen Mayor Finken noted that at the Council’s first meeting in January 2021 consideration will be given to making appointments to the various boards and commissions.

The Committee wants to make the Kick-off, bigger and better as many Summer events had to be cancelled. The following is being considered: 1. Ferris Wheel; 2. Merry – Go – Round; 3. Food; Looking to add more vendors; 4. Parade; looking for more floats; 5. Raffle; 6. Warming Stations; and of course 7. The Light Parade.

They want to make the Ferris Wheel and MerryGo-Round free to all who want to ride. The total cost for these two rides is: $6800.00. The committee is extending the parade route to go past the bowling alley and spreading out all of the events to comply with social distancing requirements. City Administrator Winter stated that the Melrose Area Chamber returned to the City the $2,000 donation for the Riverfest Celebration. The Riverfest Celebration was cancelled due to COVID. Council Member Justin Frieler recommended that since the Riverfest donation of $2,000 was returned, that the City donate that money along with an additional $1,000 to the Melrose Area Chamber for the Holiday Kick-Off. Mayor Finken stated that it should be noted that in the future the City would continue to donate $2,000 to Riverfest and a $1,000 donation to the Holiday Kick-Off. A motion was made by Mr. Justin Frieler to donate $3,000 to the Holiday Kick-Off. The motion was seconded by Mr. Travis Frieler with a roll call vote recorded as follows: FOR: Council Member: Justin Frieler, Travis Frieler, Hill, and Mayor Finken; AGAINST: None; ABSENT: Council Member Klasen The following informational items were then reviewed: a. If you think doing a budget is only for people who have trouble making ends meet, think again. My wife and I have lived by a written, monthly budget every single month for about 30 years. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a multi-millionaire, or if you have just $100 to your name, knowing exactly how much money you have—and where it’s going—is an essential part of managing your finances accurately and successfully.

Believe me, I hear dozens of other excuses, too. You’d be amazed at how many people don’t make a budget every month because they think it’s “boring.”

Others claim they can do their budgets in their heads. I don’t think so! For a budget to really work, it needs to be something you can track down to the last penny. And if you’re married and saying you can do a monthly budget in your head, that means only one of you is involved in the decision making. That’s a recipe for disaster in your finances and your relationship.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a car with a traction control issue. It is a 2008 Chevrolet Impala with the 3.4 engine. Most of the time it runs pretty good, but at least once a week when the car is fully warm the throttle will become mushy and it won’t accelerate and at the same time the traction control light and check engine light will come on. I have had the car scanned for codes at my shop and the only ones that come up are random misfire p0300 codes in history and they cannot get it to act up for them. Do you have any ideas as to what the cause could be?

-Jake in Peoria, Illinois What you are describing is common on the GM cars and some trucks in your year range but there is no one common issue that will fix every one of them. To be sure of the cause it really needs to be acting up when a shop looks at the car. One of the common items is the throttle body which is electric.

If any of the sensors fail in the unit it can cause operation like yours but that is not the only component that can do this. We have also seen issues with the engine power-train control modules doing the same thing. Another common issue is the wiring at or near the throttle body. A shop will want to verify the issue before repairs.

years and I’d like to buy a large toy hauler and haul everything in it and put our jeep on a trailer behind the toy hauler. Some of the toy haulers we have been looking at weigh close to 18k pounds and the Jeep is another 6k, but it is rolling on a trailer. How big of a vehicle do I need to haul it safely. We only will pull about 6k miles a year.

Once you know the weight use 80% as a rule. If the truck can tow 30k pounds do not tow more than 80% of capacity. This will mean getting a newer big heavy diesel powered one ton or bigger truck for sure.
