Don’t be afraid to be courageous -By Harvey Mackay In his Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Profiles of Courage,” U.S. President John F. Kennedy, wrote eloquently about courage: “Courage, the universal virtue, is comprehended by us all. For without belittling the courage with which men have died, we should not forget those acts of courage with which men have lived.

“The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment; but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy.”

Courage is regarded as one of the major human virtues. Courage is bravery, valor, standing up to danger, guts and nerves all rolled into one. It’s easy to be ordinary. Courage is what sets people apart from the crowd.

Those stories of heroism are inspiring, but few of us will ever find ourselves in the kind of extraordinary situations that are the stuff of legend.

Consider the words of American poet Maya Angelou: “Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.”

The good news is that courage is available to everyone. There are plenty of ways to be courageous in our lives. Doing something for the first time is often a demonstration of courage. Is there someone you know who is being picked on where you can defend that person?

Maybe it’s just standing up for yourself or speaking up. How about asking for a raise or a promotion at work or leaving a job you don’t like and becoming an entrepreneur?

to take responsibility for your actions – or having the courage to be who you are and to be authentic.

It takes courage to persevere in difficulties when we are tempted to give up. I have never met a successful person who hasn’t had to overcome a little or a lot of adversity. Trying times are no time to quit trying.

One of the greatest challenges in life is doing what people say you can’t. When things seem most bleak, you must have the courage to carry on to success.

The line between failure and success is so fine that we scarcely know when we pass it; so fine that we are often on the line and do not know it. How many people have given up too soon?

More than 5,200 senior managers were asked by Santa Clara University and the Tom Peters Group/Learning Systems to describe the characteristics they most admire in a leader. The top 10 characteristics, as reported in “Management Review” magazine were: honest, competent, forward-looking, inspiring, intelligent, fair-minded, broad-minded, courageous, straightforward and imaginative.

Anyone who has started a business or managed an organization understands the courage required to make decisions and take risks. Taking the easy way out is not an option.

In business, prospects may seem darkest when actually they are about to turn. A little more perseverance, a little more effort, and what seemed a hopeless failure may turn into a glorious success.

But it also takes courage to know when to admit failure and move on to more productive ideas. Walking away from an investment of time and money is a decision many businesses have had to make. That’s not cowardice, it’s courage borne out of wisdom.

Working up the courage to learn how to say that two-letter word – No – can be daunting at first. Do not feel guilty when you need to say no respectfully.

Some people feel like they have to say yes to almost anything they are asked to do. Others just want everyone to like them. They’re afraid if they say no they might cause the person making the request to reject them.

I’m offering a challenge for the New Year: Be the courageous person that you know you can be. I think you’ll discover that demonstrating courage in small acts will enable you to trust your instincts when more difficult situations arise. Make courage an everyday thing, not something reserved for special occasions.

An unlikely hero was being hailed for standing up to an attacker twice his size and asked how he could be so brave.

“I was too scared to run,” he said, “and too dumb to think of anything else.”

But his friends said, “No, you didn’t have time to think. Courage is a natural instinct if you have it.”

Mackay’s Moral: If a thing is worth having, it’s worth fighting for.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Grandpa's Model A

There are some occasions when we find ourselves in a conversation with someone close to our age and the conversation brings back some memories that had been long forgotten.

These memories were important to us at the time, but were simply forgotten as time passed.

One memory is of my Grandpa's Model A Coupe. It was black, as were all of the Model A's. The trunk door had been removed and a wooden box filled the trunk space and extended about a foot beyond the trunk area above the bumper. This was his pickup. He used it to do most of his traveling, including trips to town to deliver eggs and chickens and to return home with salt, feed, groceries and hardware. It was used to go fishing and pheasant hunting. It was quite dirty inside and the driver's door window had brown stripes on it, which happened when he frequently forgot to open the window before he spit his snuff juice.

He would often invite me to go fishing with him. He didn't have a boat, so we either rented a boat for $.50 or fished from shore.

It didn't seem to matter where we would go, we always brought home lots of fish. Me, being the passenger, had the responsibility of reaching out the window to hang on to the 3 large cane poles, which were our fishing rods. Two poles were lighter and one was especially heavy, which was baited with the first perch caught and used to entice a passing Northern. Sometimes these Northern Pike were large enough to really stress the large pole. We usually returned home at sunset because the lights on the Model A didn't work so well. The folks at home were not

always happy to see us, because all of those fish needed to be cleaned, The light needed to clean the fish in the dark attracted flocks of hungry mosquitoes. We had no mosquito repellent, but we did eat fish for the next few days.

I also recall going Bullhead fishing.

This was done at night and usually involved catching about half a gunny sack full of fish.

They were easy to clean and tasted good either fried or smoked. It was a treat to eat fish without having to pick out small bones.

Memories, my other Grandpa and his brother drove to Montana each fall to visit relatives and hunt deer. The trip back took a couple of days, during which the deer remained tied over the hood of the 37 Chevrolet. As deer became more numerous in this area, we had the opportunity to taste local deer and found that local deer tasted better than the ones from Montana. Sometimes the trip from Montana occurred in fairly warm weather.

A neighbor told a story about his past. He grew up next to the lake and as a result, the entire family enjoyed fishing. Every winter, they would put a spear house on the lake close to the farm place. One day his mother was sitting in the spear house when she was frightened enough to get out of the spear house and run to the farm house. Evidently an extremely large fish came up in the spear hole and she definitely wasn't planning to stay around to see what kind of fish it was. No other family member ever saw the fish.

I have been at many funerals and on at least a couple of those occasions the pastor would talk about the dash. You know, the little line between when the person was born and when the person died. The dash is just a little line but it could represent 60, 70, or 100 years of a persons life. This is sort of how I “feel” at this time of year. We are in between Christmas and New Year’s. Christmas is done but the new year is not quite here. Many people especially these days, are uptight about the new year, and for good reason. We live in a corrupt world and there appears to be little hope.

Christians, pay attention! This is our opportunity to make a difference in the world. I am asking you to consider your new year resolution. Not one that you forget about one week after January 1. What I am asking you to do is found in Matthew 5:13-16, to be salt and light.

Matthew 5:13-16 says “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. “You are the light of the

world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Salt is a food additive that makes our food taste better and it also preserves food. This is what Jesus is teaching here. Make a difference in people’s life, by being involved in their lives and give encouragement. Light by the way, cannot be hidden. We can only hide light by blowing out the candle or turning the switch off. Darkness is considered sin and light is the gospel of Jesus Christ. Be, salt and light to the world in people’s life, and make a difference in the dash of their life.

Donald P. Wenderski

S e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Donald P. Wenderski, age 77, of Waite Park, formerly of Holdingford will be at a later date.

Don died Tuesday December 21, 2021, at Edenbrook nursing home. Arrangements are being made by Miller-Carlin Funeral Homes.

Don was born October 24, 1944, in Holding Township to Edmund and Mary (Wiatrak) Wenderski. He married Carol Viehauser on July 26, 1968, in Saint Olaf Church in Downtown Minneapolis. Don was a roofer for over 30 years. He worked for McDowall Co. in Saint Cloud, before accepting a position as Assistant Superintendent for John A. Dalsin in Minneapolis. In his position he oversaw the largest re-roofing job in the U.S. at Nissan Car Plant in Smyrna, TN. Don was also a proud member of Knights of Columbus and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Saint Anna. In his retirement, Don enjoyed inventing ways to keep squirrels out of the bird feeders, rolling dice for coffee with his friends, B-S-ing at the gas station, putzing around the yard, and using his new lawnmower to cut grass for his children.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol (Viehauser) Wenderski, and children; Cindi Alley, Elk Ridge, Utah; Jason (Libby) Wenderski, Big Lake; Ross Wenderski, Saint Joseph; Chris Wenderski, Burtrum; Jenny (Jamie) Ramsdell, Saint Michael. He is also survived by his grandchildren; Kris (Garrett) Hagler; Matthew (Nina) Alley; Katie Alley; Maia, Brenna, Kyla, and Connor Wenderski; Mason Eischens; Levi, Wyatt, and Abby Wenderski; Breckin and Alyena Ramsdell, five great-grandchildren and sister, Barb (John) Riesner, Avon and brother, James Wenderski, Avon.

He is preceded in death by parents Edmund and Mary Wenderski, brother and sisters; Lucille Streit, Violet Mader, Mary Wenderski, Harry Wenderski , Delores Tverberg, Sallie Imgrund, Agnes Malikowski, Monica Mueller, Annie Chiantera, Joseph Wenderski, and Vicky Sherburne.

Joseph “Joe” Schumer passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 11 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN. Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, from 4-8 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with parish prayers at 4PM with a Rosary starting at 7:30 pm, and also one hour prior to services on Thursday.

Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Joe was born on March 20, 1938, to John and Martha (Justin) Schumer in St. Stephen, MN, the 2nd of 12 children. He went to school in St. Stephen through 8th grade, later receiving his GED in 1984. He was married to Elaine Sanoski on June 1, 1960, at Sacred Heart Church in Flensbug, MN. They lived in St. Joe for 2 years, and then moved to the Upsala area, where he lived for the rest his life. He worked in Artificial Insemination industry for 38 years, before retiring in 2000. He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was on the church board, usher, lector, eucharistic minister, and Knights of Columbus. He also said the rosary daily at home. During retirement, he would work for the US Census Bureau, Royal Farms, and MN State Fair. He also started Upsala Sunday Sluggers softball league for boys and girls, ages 8-14. He enjoyed the activities of watching all sports especially the MN Twins, playing Monday night poker with the guys in Holdingford, going to the casinos and frequent trips to Laughlin, NV, and watching town team baseball on Sundays.

Joe is survived by his children Pat (Lynne) of Shoreview, Marvin (Gayle) of Big Lake, Tim of Ramona, OK, Steve (Laurie) of Manvel, ND, Michele of Upsala, Rob of Holdingford, Alan of St. Cloud, and Sherry of Little Falls; Daughterin-law Annette, of Gilman; 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; Godchildren Jackie Lee, and Melinda Hoefer; Guatemalan Godchildren Juan Zamora, and Carlos Hernandez; brother Jim Schumer; sisters Barbara Loehlein, Sr. Mary Schumer, Cynthia Anderson, Ruth Botbyl, and Ramona Fisher.

He was preceded death by his parents; wife Elaine on August 14th, 2019; son Mark on March 1st, 2020; siblings John, Terry, Emmett Schumer, Kathleen Vouk, and Lucy Schumer.

Memorials are preferred to CHI Hospice in Little Falls or the Morrison County Food Shelf.

S e r v i c e s celebrating the life of Joseph Ritzer, age 53, of Albany will be at Saint Benedict, Avon. Visitation on January 6th, 2022 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The Memorial service will be on January 7th, 2022 at 11:00 am with a visitation at 10:00 am. Joseph died Tuesday, December 21, 2021, at the Saint Cloud Hospital after a battle with Covid. Joseph was born August 16, 1968, in Saint Cloud to Delvin and Agnes (Skudlarek) Ritzer.

Joseph was a truck driver for Schnieder for ten years and worked for Bluestem for another 14 years. Joseph enjoyed coin collecting, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Joseph was also a promoter of Mid MN Coin Expo in Saint Cloud for five years.

He is survived by his girlfriend Angie Thompson, and children; Logan Ritzer, Albany; Amarissa Thompson, Albany; Gavin Thompson, Albany. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters; Rose (Fred) Birk, New Prague; Karen (Edward) Balfour, Freeport; Sharlene (Maurry) Muller, Albany; Ann Montanez, Savage; and John Ritzer.

He is preceded in death by parents Delvin and Agnes Ritzer, Stepfather Adolph Ritzer and many aunts and uncles.

Gerald J. “Jerry” Beuning Gerald J. “Jerry” Beuning, age 78 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at his home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m.

Monday, January 3 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 2 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the church.

Gerald Joseph Beuning was born October 4, 1943 in Melrose, Minnesota to Ralph and Catherine (Klasen) Beuning. He attended grade school Holy Family School in Sauk Centre and graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1961. Jerry furthered his education and graduated from North Dakota State College of Science.

He was united in marriage to Kaye Costello on November 25, 1967 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Jerry owned and managed Beuning Agricultural Service in Sauk Centre and retired in 2003.

He was a lifelong resident of Sauk Centre, member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Lions Club, American Legion Post 67, Sauk Centre Fire Department, and the Knights of Columbus.

Jerry enjoyed flying, fishing and hunting, woodworking, house remodeling, traveling, watching baseball, and socializing with a couple Coors Lights.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Kaye Beuning of Sauk Centre; son, Brian (Ginger) Beuning; grandson, Max Beuning; brother, Roger (Susan) Beuning of Sauk Centre; and sister, Sue Hornick of Sauk Centre.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; and a stillborn daughter in 1979.

Memorials are preferred.

Michael J. Schiller

Michael J. “Mike” Schiller, age 68 of St. Francis, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 19, 2021, in St. Francis, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 28 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in St. Francis near Freeport, Minnesota with Rev. David Grundman officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Michael John Schiller was born May 22, 1953, in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Harlin and Rita (Harren) Schiller. He graduated in 1971 from Holdingford High School and on November 15, 1975, he married the love of his life, Karen M. Roering. They began their adventure in dairy farming on the 3rd generation Schiller home farm, eventually purchasing it in 1980. In May 1995 they expanded their farming operation by purchasing the Lange farm. They were blessed with four children and raised their family on the farm.

Mike was a dairy enthusiast and discovered a passion for breeding good, registered Holsteins, purchasing his first registered animal in 1981. They took pride in developing the prefix Schillview Holsteins. While the researchintensive process can take years and generations to get right, they had an outstanding herd of 90 registered cows by the time they were inducted into the Minnesota Livestock Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition to breeding his own cows, Mike had an extensive breeding bull and cow merchandising program, selling embryos throughout the nation and the world. He also took pride in planting and harvesting high-quality forage. Youngest son Charlie became a partner in the dairy operation in 2014.

Mike had a passion for meeting people and giving back to the dairy industry throughout his career. He was a member of county, state and national Holstein Associations, and served on the Associated Milk Producers Inc (AMPI) corporate board. He was a member of Holdingford Jaycees and Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Outside of the dairy operation, Mike looked forward to annual fishing trips and watching the races with friends, as well as traveling the country to various dairy functions: cattle shows, sales, conventions and trade shows. In recent years, he most enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and watching the next generation become interested in the dairy industry.

Mike was a one-of-a-kind dairy producer, caring, honest, funny man who could always make you smile and fill the room with laughter.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Karen Schiller of St. Francis; children, Michelle “Shelly” (Dave) Albers of Dundas, Brian Schiller of Isanti, Dennis Schiller of St. Francis, and Charles “Charlie” Schiller of St. Francis; grandchildren, Molly, Isaac, and Macy Albers, Andrew and Emma Schiller, and Caitlin Jansen; mother, Rita Schiller of Albany; sister and brothers, Judy (Jim) Douvier of Avon, Roger (LaVerne) Schiller of Aitkin, Kenny (Shannon) Schiller of The Villages, Florida, and Steve (Patty) Schiller of St. Cloud.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Harlin Schiller in March of 2000.

Joseph L. “Joe” Middendorf, age 89 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on We d n e s d a y, December 22, 2021 at the CentraCare Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 28 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Joseph Lawrence Middendorf was born June 12, 1932 in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Veronica (Toenyan) Middendorf. He was united in marriage to Luella Leukam on June 14,1956 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Joe was a true farmer and enjoyed working the land.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. In his early years, Joe enjoyed ice fishing. Later in life, he enjoyed spending winters down south and spending time with his family.

Bob farmed all his life. After he retired from farming, he bartended for 25 years at the Eagle’s Club in Sauk Centre until they closed the doors and then at the Red Carpet in Sauk Centre.

Bob was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church and Catholic United Financial. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and going to the casino with friends. In his younger years, he enjoyed deer hunting and playing the drums with the Elmer Scheid Band.

Survivors include his brother, Delbert Wessel of New Munich; nieces, Pam (Tom) Koppelman of Melrose, Sharon Messer (significant other, Mike Hatlestad) of Sauk Centre, and Mona (Bill) Marthaler of New Munich; nephew, Tom Wessel of Sauk Centre; and many other nieces and nephews.

Annella C. Clasemann, age 85, went to heaven to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 9, 2021, surrounded by her family at the Solvay House in Duluth. She was born to Roman and Adelaide (Terhaar) Kulzer, the fifth child of nine. Annella grew up on a dairy farm in Sauk Centre, MN and graduated from St. Francis Catholic high school.

Shortly after graduation, she met the love of her life, Alois Clasemann, and they were married on July 2, 1958, and together they raised seven children on their dairy farm in Long Prairie, MN. She helped her husband on the farm and could drive any tractor…she was her husband’s perfect companion, working alongside together. Annella was a creative and talented person. She sewed her wedding dress and made most of her own clothing. Annella was an inspirational speaker, giving talks to women’s groups and to school children. She supported her children’s activities and was involved in 4-H; teaching her children many important life lessons such as, sewing, cooking, gardening and most importantly, about Jesus.

Annella’s biggest love was the Lord, and her favorite topic was Jesus. She blessed her children as they headed out the door and showed her faith with joy!

Annella was a member of the Prairie Prominaders and would make matching square dance outfits for her and her husband, as they performed in many towns and street dances. She also loved to polka, waltz, and dance the Scottish. Annella and Alois belonged to the neighborhood card club that met once a month and had great fun playing ten-point smear.

Annella is survived by her husband of 63 years, Alois, her children, Kathleen (Dennis) Bastian, Lisa (Terry) Thies, Paul Clasemann, Sara (Randy) Platt, Dona (Jeff) Carlson, Tina (Tom) Lassard, and Janice (Doug) Merrill; grandchildren, Adam (Allie) Bastian, Grant Bastian, Maisey (Bjorn) Wahlquist, Colin Thies, Cody Thies, Michael (Ashley) Clasemann, Steve (Tracy) Clasemann, Rachael Platt, Rylie Platt, Jake (Lucy) Carlson, Mackenzie Carlson, Nicholas Lassard, Benjamin (Lena) Merrill; great grandchildren, Nolan, Maya, Nora and Molly Clasemann, Davina Merrill and Anja Bastian; siblings, Elsie Bromenshenkel, Janet Kulzer, Roman (Mary) Kulzer, and Marina (George) Blackwood; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

One option would be finding a way to generate some extra income, whether that means a part-time job nights or weekends, or pursuing additional education or certifications to get your income level up at work. Another is to sell the house and find a less expensive alternative, but I’m never a big fan of that idea — especially in a family situation — unless there’s absolutely no other way to avoid bankruptcy or foreclosure.

I think you and your wife need to sit down, and spend some serious heart-to-heart time talking things over, crunching the numbers and creating a plan. There’s going to be some sacrifice involved for everyone, and only you two can decide what’s worth it and what isn’t — for you two and your kids.

Once I had time to get it to the shop, they told me my air conditioning compressor had failed and it would cost $1400.00 to repair it in addition to the $15.00 cabin air filter which they will install for free with the repair. Why would a dirty air filter cause a bad compressor? Some cars don’t even have a filter.

When it gets severely restricted the evaporator core for the air conditioning may get so cold that oil in the system will not flow well and it is possible that in some cases it could damage the system. Usually, the pressure switch in the system would shut it down but we don’t know all your details. If you have a cabin air filter, check its condition regularly and replace if needed.

Burtrum City • December 6, 2021 The Burtrum City Council meeting was called to order at 7 pm on Monday, December 6, 2021 by Mayor Ron Strassburg.

In attendance was Ron Strassburg, Sharon Erickson, Sara Macho, Mitchell Bruggenthies and Laura Horvath.

Minutes from the November 1, 2021 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Sharon Erickson and seconded by Sara Macho, upon vote motion was carried and minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved; and the city discussed current bills/ invoices and a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Sara Macho, finance report was accepted, and bills paid.

New Business: City patrons were inquiring about the assessment of taxes. City will check with Todd County in regard to how they break down all the city and county taxes.

We received a $1,500.00 donation from Lion’s Club and various businesses for a total donation of $2,765.00 for our Santa Party Event in December 2021. Appreciation to all the business who donated for this event.

Old Business: No topics to discuss for old business.

Since no further topics needed to be addressed the meeting was adjourned with a motion made by Sara Macho and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies, upon vote motion carried and meeting was adjourned.

Our next meeting will be held on January 3, 2022 These are unapproved minutes.

City Clerk Laura Horvath Grey Eagle City • November 9, 2021 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 9th day of November 2021 in council chambers. Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Brad Johnson and Brian Hollenkamp. Council member Bill Pohlmann was absent. Also in attendance were John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Dan Berscheid, Joe Krueger, Greg Stang, Steve and Karen Konsor, Wes David, Ron Warnert and Pam White.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brad Johnson to approve the minutes of the October 12, 2021 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following maintenance items were discussed: 1. The new compressor for the bubbler system in the water tower has been installed.

2. The bathrooms at the picnic shelter and ball park have been winterized.

3. The generator at the West Lift Station seems to be working good.

4. There are gopher mounds on the south side of the ponds that need to be taken care of.

Bryan Bye updated the council on the following items from the sewer project: 1. Working on getting the gate valves raised up but no set date as yet.

2. Explained change order #5 – there is no change to the project but rather a change in the substantial completion date to October 8th. Final seeding will be dormant seeding.

3. The council will need to approve a certificate of substantial completion.

It is recommended that bid opening take place on December 8, 2021 with council approval on December 14, 2021. Estimated cost of this portion of the project is between $125,000.00 and $175,000.00.

8. A portion of sidewalk on Cedar Street North in the middle of the block on the west side is sagging inward and needs to be taken care of.

9. Sediment rings around drains and culverts need to stay in place to prevent erosion.

Dan Berscheid reported on the following Fire Department items: 1. They are looking over a truck from Willow River. If the decision is made to purchase the truck it would cost $7,000 plus the truck would be required to be painted.

2. Background checks should be completed for Fire Department members. Joe Krueger will look into a form that applicants need to sign authorizing the background check.

Greg Stang from People Services reported on the following water and wastewater items: 1. Wastewater flows have been very low, even with the 8.9” of rain that fell in October.

There appears to be very little infiltration with the new sewer mains. They only needed to do one discharge this fall and there is plenty of storage to get through the winter months.

2. The water plant is running well. The updates have not been completed as yet. The majority of the fire hydrants were flushed. The City has good quality water throughout the system and they performed some water shut offs for the snow birds.

The council discussed the moratorium on storage sheds that will end on December 21, 2021. Joe Krueger worked on an Ordinance regulating garages, storage shed and storage units and can make modifications. The council can either let the moratorium expire of call for a public hearing on the proposed ordinance. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to call for a public hearing on the proposed ordinance for Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 7:00 p.m., in council chambers. A second was made by Brad Johnson and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The following building permit applications were reviewed and approved: 1. A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve a building permit for Steve and Karen Konsor to build a 38’ x 42’ addition to their current building. 2. A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve a building permit for Pam White to put in two roof additions over existing patios and to extend the covered patio roof on the back side of the property. They also would like to install a

The Melrose VFW Chapter 7050 blessed Camp Lebanon with a gift of $5790 to fund the purchase of a 74-inch Bobcat snow blower for its new Bobcat T62 compact track loader.
