You really can buy happiness -By Harvey Mackay W e ’ v e all heard the old adage that you can’t buy happiness. Well, it turns out that’s not exactly true. You actually can buy happiness – when you spend your money or your time on others. Does that come as a surprise to anyone? It’s true for individuals and companies alike. Corporations and organizations often choose a pet charity or cause to support. It’s more than just a public relations move. Companies that care make huge impacts on their communities. Similarly, individuals feel the same effect. A great way to feel happy is to help other people by getting involved in volunteer work that supports your community. The experience of helping others can give you the perspective you

need to appreciate what you have. You don’t have to look far to find an inspirational opportunity, especially around the holidays. During this traditional time for giving, organizations are clamoring for all kinds of help. Sharing precious time may seem burdensome, but the rewards are immeasurable. I’ve written about one of my favorite days every winter, when my elf-assistant Greg Bailey and I take a shift ringing bells for the Salvation Army. Our kettle is proof that even when people can’t spare time, they are generous with their money. The Salvation Army is always looking for bell-ringers, and they love having full red kettles. Those donations help buy a lot of happiness for people in need. Researchers at the University of British Columbia and Harvard University found that people who buy gifts for others or make charitable donations are happier than people who spend their money primarily on themselves. These findings, reported in “Bits & Pieces,” described how scientists asked 630 Americans to rate their general happiness, their annual incomes and their gifts to others, including charitable contributions. Researchers found that happiness was not related to how much money participants earned, but rather how they spent their money. The people who donated more money to charity or used it for gifts for others rated themselves much happier than the others. Researchers also measured the rates of happiness for people who received
profit-sharing bonuses of $3,000–$8,000 from their employers. Again, the researchers found that it was not how much money the participants received that predicted happiness levels, but rather how the recipients spent the money. As part of the study, researchers gave participants a $20 bill and asked them to spend it that day. Half were instructed to spend the money on themselves, while the other half were to spend it on others. You guessed it. The people who spent the money on others reported feeling better and happier than those that didn’t. Therefore, if you want to improve your feelings of happiness, try spending even a small amount of money or time on someone else during the day. There are plenty of other ways to be happy and successful without measuring how much money you make. Here’s what works for the happiest people on Earth, according to research cited by The Week website: • Nurture your relationships. A job you hate adds stress to your life that no amount of money can erase. If you’re unhappy at work, find a new job that suits your temperament and skills better. • Plan happy activities. Spontaneity is nice, but people who enjoy life actively plan for fun and recreation. Don’t wait until the last minute: Decide on a few activities you like and put them on the calendar so they don’t get lost in the shuffle. And I would add: • Share willingly. When you share your gifts, whether time or money, you are giving the best gift of all. You may never know the impact your giving has on others. What matters is the impact it has on you. You’ll soon find it becomes a habit. Remember, you are responsible for your own happiness. You can choose to

Obituaries Judie M. Neville
Judie M. Neville (nee Judie Proctor) of St. Louis, MO and formerly of Minneapolis, MN passed away on November 26 at age 76 after a full and wonderful life. Judie was bravely fighting Parkinson’s for several years. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James M. Neville, son Steve W. Neville & Renee Schwanke (Grey Eagle, MN), daughter Martha M. Hereford (Andrew) and Grandson Jimmy Hereford (St. Louis), sister and brother-in-law Mary & Richard Lund (Minneapolis), sister-in-law Kathleen Neville (Boise, ID), sister-in-law and brother-in-law Laurie & Peter Frenzel (Middletown, CT), sister-in-law Gale Proctor (Minneapolis), and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Amanda Proctor, her
sister Peggy Clark, her brothers David and Frank Proctor, and her brother-inlaw Philip Neville. Judie attended Washburn High School in Minneapolis (1957) and Monticello College in Godfrey, IL (1959). She enjoyed all sports - particularly badminton and tennis. Judie was an avid baseball and football fan, following and rooting for teams in both St. Louis and Minnesota. She volunteered gladly at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (St. Louis) and St. Stephens Episcopal Church (Edina, MN) and worked hard for The Haven of Grace (St. Louis). Judie was a very friendly and loving person and, as her many friends know, she loved to dance to rock-n-roll. She enjoyed her family trips to New York City, Washington DC, Boston, New Orleans, Florida, Sun Valley & San Francisco. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family at the cabin in Grey Eagle. A memorial service was held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 110 N. Warson Rd., St. Louis on December 2nd at 3:00 pm.

George A. Clear, age 95 of Burtrum, died Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 4 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Ron Tibbetts officiating. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Grey Eagle. George Arthur Clear was born September 4, 1920 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Walter and Edith (Osborne) Clear. George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He married Radegundis Clear on November 23, 1947 and later divorced. He was united in marriage to

M a s s of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, December 2, 2015 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Avon for Alice I. Pflipsen, 88, who passed away peacefully and thankful to be surrounded by her loving family. Rev. Blane Wasnie, OSB officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery. Alice was born on August 7, 1927 in Avon the daughter of John and Barbara (Knoblach) Smith. She married Harold Pflipsen on June 18, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon. Alice worked very hard laundering at St. John’s Abbey/University for 39 years. She is a member of St. Benedict’s

Edna Bell Beckman on April 27, 1974 in Mason City, Iowa. George worked at Swift in South St. Paul for 29 years and then at Specialty Manufacturing for one year. He then worked at Long Prairie Packing Company until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. George enjoyed spending time outdoors. He liked cutting wood, hunting, especially deer hunting, and spent most of his time fishing. Survivors include his children, Pamela (Robert) Morse of Altoona, Wisconsin, Duane (Patricia) Clear of Elk River, and Bruce (Sandra) Clear of Grey Eagle; seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Clear on November 27, 2003; brothers and sisters, Frances Wineberg, Harold Clear, Bob Clear, Mildred Lekberg, Gertrude Wittkop, Viola Johnson, James Clear, Ken Clear, Dorothy Wittkop and Joyce Karnes. Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Grey Eagle.
Catholic Church and Christian Women for 52 years. Alice walked in her faith daily and was proud of her Christianity. She enjoyed reading, jigsaw puzzles, and hosting July picnic day for the entire Smith family. Alice loved her family beyond words; she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Funeral Service were held Monday, November 30, 2015 at Williams Dingmann Family Funeral Home-Stein Chapel, Long Prairie for Leo F. Olson, age 72, of Long Prairie who passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Rev. Paul Twist officiated and burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Staples. Leo Fred Olson was born June 20, 1943 in Bertha, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Edna (Garnet) Olson. He grew up and attended school in Staples. After high school he worked at the Box Factory

Spandl, age 98, of Long Prairie who passed away on Saturday at CentraCare Health Systems – Long Prairie. Rev. Bill Bakewicz will officiate and burial will be in Chapel in the Hills Cemetery, Little Elk Township, Todd County, Minnesota. Melaine Hildegard Truog was born September 23, 1917 in Bruce Township, Todd County, Minnesota, the daughter of August and Ella (Dettler) Truog. She grew up near Pillsbury and graduated from Swanville High School. She married Lloyd William Spandl on May 25, 1937 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. They farmed for 45 years in Little Elk Township. Melaine moved to Long Prairie in 1981. Melaine was a member of American Lutheran Church. She liked to play softball Nightly Specials

and volleyball. She enjoyed playing games, especially card games, putting jigsaw puzzles together, and picking berries. Melaine sewed many quilts for the missions. She enjoyed going on picnics and camping. She also enjoyed some traveling and even went trucking with her grandson where she was able to visit 49 of the 50 states. If ever asked: How are you feeling? The response was “Mean, fat, and ornery.” Melanie wanted her family to remember her for her smiles and hugs. Melaine is survived by her children, Robert (Karen) Spandl, Browerville; Joan (Marvin) Munt, Little Fork, MN; Dennis Spandl, Buffalo, WY; Duane (Kathy) Spandl, Grey Eagle; Phyllis Perry, Clinton, MI; 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Eleanor Aleshire, daughter-in-law Judy Spandl, brothers Rev. Otto, Gerald, and Erland Truog.

Zerl E. Clay, 100 year old resident of Burtrum, MN, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, MN. A private family service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle, MN with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating. Burial will take place in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Clotho, MN. Funeral arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN. Zerl Eleazor Clay was born on August 25, 1915 in Osakis, Minnesota to the late Eleazor and Bessie Clay. As a young man, he attended District #40 country school near Long Prairie. He worked on neighboring farms until he joined the military. In 1938, he began his 30 year career in the U.S. Navy. In 1939, Zerl married Velma Johnson in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple lived in

Long Beach, California until 1941. Zerl was then stationed at Pearl Harbor during the start of World War II on December 7, 1941. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre as a Chief Boatswain. During this time, he served on many different ships. Zerl fully retired from the U.S. Navy in 1968. The couple farmed near Burtrum, Minnesota for five years. In 1964, the couple moved into Burtrum and built the Budget Shop, later converting it into apartments in 1973. In 1979, Zerl and Velma moved to Arizona to enjoy their retirement. They returned to Burtrum in 2000 to be near family. Zerl lived out the rest of this life doing the things he loved, like woodworking and carpentry. Zerl is survived by wife of 76 years, Velma Clay of Melrose, MN; son, Jerry (Bev) Clay of St. Cloud, MN; daughters, Joan (Ken) Rahn of Burtrum, MN; and Jodi (Yancy) Yungdahl of Tenino, WA; sisters, Eleanor Schmidt of AK; and Ellendale Bartz of Glenwood, MN; and 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleazor and Bessie; brother, Forest Clay; sisters, Virginia, Margie and Nita.

He also farmed for several years. He married Margie Jensen on May 29, 1985 in Long Prairie. After retirement, he also worked for Coborn’s in Long Prairie. Leo lived life to the fullest. Leo attended First Baptist Church. He enjoyed all sports, and was an avid Vikings and Twins Fan. He also liked to fish, hunt, go to auction sales and antique shopping. He loved anything western. Leo is survived by his wife Margie, Long Prairie; children, Roger (April) Avelsgard, Breckenridge, MN; Melisa (Dennis) Brever, Long Prairie; and Tammy Brusewitz, Staples; eight grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Angie Kangas.

All I have in savings is $5,000, but I would be willing to give him $1,000. The problem is that while he’s a great friend with a good heart, he’s always getting himself into binds when it comes to money. Do you think I should give him $1,000? -Israel Dear Israel, If I were in your shoes, and I was going to give this guy a fifth of everything I had, I’d want to know it was going to save his life. From what you’ve said, it sounds like he’s just out of control with his money while you’re trying to save. That being the case, I’m not sure you’d really be helping him. If you want to gift your friend some money, then do it. But there’s no way I’d tell you to give him everything you’ve managed to save. And I certainly wouldn’t do it as a loan. Ask yourself if you believe deep down in your heart that giving this guy $1,000 would truly be a blessing to him or if, by doing it, you’d be acting as an enabler and basically just funding more of his stupidity with money. From what you’ve told me, I think there’s a good chance the answer is the latter. And if that’s the case, you can be a much better

New Medication Drop Box in Avon There is a new medication drop box located in Avon City Hall. Residents can use the drop box to safely dispose of unused/unwanted medications. It is available during regular business hours, Monday-Friday between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm. City Hall is located at 140 Stratford Street E. in Avon. When using the drop box please note: All unused/unwanted medications are accepted; but NO SHARPS If medications are in a glass container, put them in a padded envelope provided at the drop box before depositing. You do not need to remove any identifying labels from the bottles. Privacy is of highest importance and the labels are never viewed. For large quantities, please call (320) 259-3700 to arrange disposal. This program is for household use, not commercial. November 29, 2015: A Stearns County Sheriff’s Deputy was completing a traffic stop on Highway 15 in the city of St. Augusta. As the Deputy returned to his patrol and began to close his door a passing vehicle struck the rear edge of the squad’s door with the passenger side mirror. The Minnesota State Patrol investigated the crash and issued a citation to the driver of that vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The SCSO reminds drivers that if they see flashing lights ahead, whether they are emergency vehicles, tow trucks or snow plows, they are required to slow down and whenever possible move one lane away when passing. It’s safe, it’s courteous and it’s the law.

By Rachel Cruze It’s the Christmas season—my favorite time of year! And even though Christmas is the season of giving, it can also be a time when it’s really tempting to overspend. To keep from falling into that trap, you need to have a plan. So here are few ways to keep your spending in check this Christmas. 1. Make a budget. The budget is your plan. You must decide how much you’re going to spend over the holidays and even how much you want to spend on each person. Without the budget, it’s so easy to spend $10 here and $20 there. Then, before you know it, you’ve spent $100 without even buying something for your spouse! If you need a little push making your first budget, check out EveryDollar.com—the best online budgeting tool available! 2. Use cash. When you swipe a card, you spend more because you feel it less. Think about using an envelope system for your holiday spending. Put the amount of cash you need for gifts in the envelope. When the money’s gone, your gift buying is done! 3. Go easy on the sales. I get it. I love a good sale just as much as anyone, but I don’t want you buying something at a discount just because you got a good deal on it. Morrison County Sheriff’s Office November 25, 2015: At approximately 7:47 a.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a one vehicle rollover accident with injuries on Great River Road near Bowlus. The driver, 23 year old Anne Klisch of Bowlus was traveling southbound on Great River Road when she lost control on the icy roadway and rolled her car. Klisch was taken by private vehicle to St. Cloud Hospital with unknown injuries.
