When I was embarking on my “second career,” public speaking, I had a little experience under my belt – member of a To a s t m a s t e r s group, graduate of Dale Carnegie and a long list of speeches I’d made to community groups, plus various causes like getting a stadium built.

Sometimes I would speak several times in a day, trying to reach as many groups as possible. My message was often only as good as my voice.

So I did what I always do when I know I can do better: I went out and hired a public speaking coach. As it turns out, the fellow I have been working with is more than a coach.

He is just a few ticks shy of a miracle worker.

I’m talking about Roger Love, who has coached speakers, singers, internet marketers and plenty of folks who understand the power of voice and the impact it has on their careers. His updated version of “Set Your Voice Free,” first published in 1999, presents material that helps readers “showcase the best of yourself – your talents, your passion, your originality, your authenticity.”

I was quite fascinated by the anatomy lessons that form the basis of Roger’s research and teaching. When you know how your voice works from the inside out, and how to best take care of it, your attitude will change. As Roger says, “The human voice is set up to speak or sing twenty-four hours a day without getting hoarse or strained or creating any physical problems.”

That information was especially helpful to me because my voice is my living. Whether I am delivering a speech, making a sales call, making contacts for charitable or community causes, or mentoring future entrepreneurs, my voice needs to be strong and convincing.

He helped Reese Witherspoon and Jeff Bridges find their singing voices when they were preparing for movie roles that required them to stretch their limits. He worked with John Mayer and Gwen Stefani to expand their

ranges and keep their voices in top shape despite demanding performance schedules.

Roger’s techniques are clearly explained in his book, which makes it simple to practice on your own. He says, “If you know how to control the pitch, pace, tone, volume, and melody of your voice, you can consciously use them to guide the emotions of your listeners and magnify the impact of every communication you have.”

He acknowledges that great speaking and singing are not about being the best, it’s about being unique.

“It’s about expressing who you are and what’s particularly special about you,” he says. “If you learn to use your own instrument with confidence, people will open their ears to you and recognize what sets you apart from everyone else.”

This updated edition includes techniques he has developed to help people with speech disorders such as stuttering and spasmodic dysphonia.

“True artistry in speaking comes from creating a convincing blend of three elements: what you say, the way you say it, and who you are,” Roger says.

The real take-home for me is that how I use my voice is nearly as important as my message. We learn how to talk at a very young age, and I suppose we figure out soon after which Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Ma’s House

This time of the year is a season for celebration. We, as we become more mature, need to create written lists about where we need to be, what gifts we need to buy and to whom they are to be given.

Cookies, candy, bars, decorations and in some cases, planning the meal for when the kids are scheduled to come home, keep our minds and bodies occupied.

When Christmas celebrations have been completed, we have time to think about Christmas celebrations of our past. We remember when the kids were younger and some of the touching, funny and enjoyable times of those years. We recollect memories of Christmas when we were young.

We think about some special gifts we received, but mostly we remember the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends, who actually made those gatherings special. A lot of these people have left us, but they still live in our memory. They all, in their own way, formed our thinking and belief about Christmas.

One of the things which I remembered, but didn’t think about until recent years, was my grandparent’s house. By today’s standards, it was small! It consisted of two small bedrooms upstairs along with a small storage room. The downstairs was a bedroom with a one foot walkway on one side and the lower end of the bed. The headboard was against the wall and there was about a 4 foot space on one side for dressing. There

was a living room, about 16 ft. by 18 ft. which included a 4 ft. by 4 ft. by 5 ft. iron wood furnace placed about a foot from one wall. The kitchen was about 16 by 16 with part of it’s space occupied by a large wood cook-stove with hot water storage on the end. A 3 ft. by 4 ft. wood-box, a refrigerator and a 4 ft. china hutch on one wall. There was also a double sink inside a cabinet for washing hands when coming into the house. There was also a pantry, a porch and a dug basement with dirt walls and floor. The house had a 4 ft. wide hallway which was an access to the basement stairs and a restroom for the ladies if it was too cold to go to the outhouse. .This house, was the home for my grandparents, 4 sons and two daughters.

The 4 boys and 2 girls shared the two upstairs bedrooms. They didn’t feel they were deprived because the 4 boys had to share a double bed. It was “just the way it was.”

At Christmas gatherings in Grandma’s house, there were about 30 people in the house. Looking back, we have to admit that it was quite filled with people, but that was Grandma’s house and we all had a great time. It helped make a closer family.

Now the old house has partially collapsed, the doors and windows have been removed. It doesn’t feel good to see the house with all those great memories falling down, but the memories remain.

The 2017 Winter Reading Program at Great River Regional Library begins Tuesday, Jan. 3 and continues through Tuesday, Feb. 28. The theme is “Escape the Ordinary,” and readers are encouraged to explore reading options outside their normal choices.

Participants must be in 6th grade or older. Individuals can register to “Escape the Ordinary” online at griver.org or at any of the 32 Great River Regional Library locations in Central Minnesota.

Each person who registers will be given a drawing slip to use to record books they have read as part of the program.

Completed drawing slips for each 5 books read (or listened to) can be used in prize drawings for collectible Winter Reading Program mugs and also for gift cards. All prizes are provided by the St. Cloud Friends of the Library.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, the library will host “Escape the Ordinary” trivia, its second annual Winter Reading Program trivia contest. The trivia contest is for 6th grade and older. Obituaries Kenneth J. “Ken” Welle

Kenneth J. “Ken” Welle, age 77 of Meire Grove, died peacefully on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 30 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating.

Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Meire Grove. St. Joseph’s Men’s Society will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Kenneth Joseph Welle was born September 16, 1939 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to Wilfred and Ledvina (Berns) Welle. Ken graduated from Sauk Centre High School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. On February 8, 1964 he was united in marriage to Theresa Bzdok at Our Lady of Lourdes

Catholic Church in Little Falls. Ken was a self-employed carpenter who retired in 2002. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove and the St. Joseph’s Men’s Society. Ken enjoyed fishing, spending time at the cabin, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

Survivors include his children, Debbie (Steve) DeVries of Monticello, Tammy (Al) Koetter of Melrose, Scott (Melissa) Welle of Avon, Kim (Jim) Blonigen of Miramar, Florida, and Shawn (Vicki) Welle of Brooklyn Park; 15 grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren; brothers, Allan Welle of Waite Park, Tom (Marge) Welle of Sauk Centre, Roger (Joyce) Welle of Greenwald, David (Janet) Welle of Rockville, and Mark (Lola) Welle of Sauk Centre; and sisters, Diane (Rob) Moritz of Waite Park and Grace (Richard) Carlson.

Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Welle on October 24, 2003; parents; and brother, William Welle.

Serving as casket bearers will be Al, Tom, Roger, David, Mark and Nathan Welle, Noah and Nick Blonigen, and Jake Koetter. Cross bearer will be Sara Blonigen and scripture bearer will be Sydney Blonigen. Honorary bearers will be Sara, Nick, Sydney, and Noah Blonigen, Kelly Stellmach, Kayla and Katie DeVries, Kirsten Green, Jake and Katelyn Koetter, and Hannah, Nathan, Ben, Lauren, and Andrew Welle.

Jacob Dale “Jake” Wolbeck, age 21 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 19, 2016.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 27 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Jacob Dale Wolbeck was born January 9, 1995 in Willmar, Minnesota to Duane and Gail (Clear) Wolbeck. He graduated from Melrose High School in 2013 and earned his Commercial Driver License from Alexandria Technical College. Jake purchased a house in St. Cloud and was working as a truck driver

for Northern Metal Recycling.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Jake enjoyed working on his truck, using and fixing his RC cars and drones, and gaming with his brothers and cousin. He enjoyed the outdoors where he would spend time fishing, shooting clay pigeons, target practice with recurve bow, but most of all, loved spending time with his family, Chelsea, and his best friends, Justin and Travis.

Survivors include his parents, Duane and Gail Wolbeck of Melrose; long-time girlfriend, Chelsea Brunotte of St. Cloud; brothers and sister, Justin Wolbeck of Waite Park, Jessica Wolbeck of Waite Park, and Joshua Wolbeck of Melrose; and many loving relatives and friends.

Jake was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Marilyn Wolbeck and Harold and Geraldine Clear; and aunt, Edith Clear Feghoul.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Thomas J. “Tom” Arvig

to Leonard H. and Marie (Stundebeck) Arvig. Tom graduated from Melrose High School and attended St. John’s University. He was united in marriage to Emily Berscheit on December 1, 1977 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Tom lived on Big Birch Lake his entire married life. As a teenager, Tom started working in the family business, the Melrose Telephone Company; a family owned company for over 80 years. He retired as President of the company in 2010. Tom loved to travel, and was an accomplished private pilot, with over 4,000 hours of logged flight time. Tom’s generosity was well known by all who knew him.

Survivors include his son, Scott (Sara) Arvig of Grey Eagle; daughter, Elisabeth Arvig Kuhns (significant other, David Thorson) of Melrose; and seven grandchildren, Vanessa, Victoria, and Alexander Kuhns, and Myra, Silas, Claire, and Lynn Arvig.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Arvig on May 18, 2012; son, Blain Arvig on May 18, 2012; parents, L.H. and Marie Arvig; and grandson, Leo Arvig.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Thomas J. “Tom” Arvig, age 74 of Melrose, died Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his home on Big Birch Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m.

Thursday, December 29 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Last month we found out she has terminal cancer and only six months to live. We’ve been fortunate enough to become fairly wealthy during our lives together, and she wants to buy me a boat. We always went fishing together, and her last wish is for me to have the boat I’ve always wanted. Even with this prognosis, I’ll be okay financially when she’s gone. Still, I can’t stand the thought of this. It’s just too painful. Do you have any advice?

That is one amazing lady.

The first thing I’d tell you both is to make sure your faith is intact. Hug her a lot, and keep talking to, praying with, and loving on each other. Be there for her all you can, and keep in mind that doctors can be wrong. It happens a lot, believe it or not, so don’t give up hope.

If she brings up the boat again, just smile and let her know it’s all about her right now. Remind her that she did the nicest thing possible many years ago when she agreed to spend the rest of her life with you. If she’s really stubborn about this idea — something tells me she is, and in the very best way possible — promise her that whether you win or lose this fight you’ll buy that boat someday and name it after her.

In the real world, some hard hat will run into it with a piece of heavy equipment or drop a load of bricks off center and put some big time damage on this truck before he puts 1,000 miles on it. He wants to buy way too much truck. This kind of decision will wreck your finances and spell bad news for the business, too.

You can buy a perfectly good work truck for $6,000 or $7,000, and that’s what he needs to do. This truck is going to get destroyed, and trashing an inexpensive truck is a much better idea than trashing the family finances!

From January 16-21, 2017 Upsala High School students will be attending the 2017 Presidential Inauguration Ceremonies in Washington, DC. Seventeen 9th-12th graders and nine chaperones (Heather Johnson, Lynn Depa, Elisha Graves, Charlie Gunderson, Marsha Krebs, Brad McDermond, Julie Roerick, Sharon Rohde, and Julie Wensmann) will be led by UHS social studies teacher Roxann Lewis in a unique learning experience where each takes a personal role in our nation’s history.

During the week long adventure, students and chaperones will spend time visiting and learning about historic national monuments and memorials like the Pentagon, WWII, Lincoln, and Jefferson Memorials as well as other sites like the US Capitol, the National Archives, and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Early in the week, students will meet with Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s Eighth Congressional District who has provided official tickets for the group to witness the “Oath of Office” and “Inaugural Speech” of incoming president, Donald J. Trump from the grounds of Capitol Hill on Inauguration Day. The National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of American History, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and the Newseum are but few of the museums the group will visit. Other activities during the week include participation in a Wreath-Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

December 24, 2016: At 9:46 Todd County Sheriffs Office received a report of a deer being hit on County 47. It was unknown who hit the deer but a permit was issued to Wayne Kutter, Grey Eagle, to posses the deer.

December 27, 2016: At 10:02 Chris Gilyard of rural Little Falls contacted the Todd County Sheriff’s Office to report that on the night of 12/26/2016, several tools had been stolen from MGT Farms, Morrison Line Rd., Swanville.

December 27, 2016: At 10:22 Kevin Graves of Sauk Centre, was traveling East on Elk Loop with a 2016 Kennworth LP Gas truck owned by Rahn’s Oil and Propane, Inc. of Melrose attempting a home delivery when he slid off the roadway right and struck a mailbox and 911 Post at 18560 Elk Loop the Lester Bruder driveway. No damage reported to the truck the mailbox and post was destroyed. No one was hurt in the incident. Roadway was completely icy covered in that area.

Slovenian Immigration to Minnesota from 1855-1914: Author Shares Research on Local Immigration

Norm Setnicker will present “Slovenian Immigration to Minnesota from 1855-1914” at the Stearns History Museum’s Breakfast Club on Wednesday, January 11 at 9 a.m.

Most Slovene immigrants came to the United States between 1870 and 1924. Those that settled near St. Stephen and Brockway Township became farmers. Others established roots in northern Minnesota, working in the mines throughout the Iron Range.

By 1910, the United States was home to around 180,000 Slovene immigrants and their families.

What brought these hardy immigrants to the area? Setnicker will trace the importance of early Slovenian missionaries such as Frideric Baraga, Francis Pierz, and Joseph Buh in promoting immigration to Minnesota.

Gregor Pagacnik and Gregor Peternel arrived in the 1860s, homesteading what would become St. Stephen. Farming opportunities and the thick hardwood forest in the area were viewed as valuable characteristics. Twenty-five years later, the Iron Range area of St. Louis County drew workers into the growing economic boom of the 1880s.

This presentation ties in with Stearns History Museum’s current exhibit, “Farmers, Miners & Refugees: Slovenian Immigration in Minnesota

Since 1855” which has been extended through April.

Setnicker was born in the heart of the Mesabi Iron Range in the small town of Biwabik. A retired teacher, he is the author of Twin Cities Slovenians: A Ten Year History and has dual citizenship with Slovenia. Please join us for this fascinating presentation.

MnDOT Adds New Features to 511 Traveler Information System Motorists using the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 511 traveler information system this winter have several new features to help them know what the state’s road conditions are before they venture out on the roadways.

“Overall, the 511 traveler information system is getting better each year and more people are using it,” said Kelly Braunig, 511 program manager. “These new features will help the traveling public make good decisions about winter travel.”

She said one million more motorists used the mobile app from the 2014-15 to the 2015-16 winter seasons. There were also significant increases in the number of users on the truckers’ and full-featured web pages.

Some of the new features this winter are: • Personalize Your 511: Motorists can enter up to 20 routes they travel to see where incidents, such as crashes or construction, are located. Users can also click on a specific incident to see a camera view. This is available on the full-featured and truckers’ pages.

• Smart 511: This is the same as Personalize Your 511, but for a smartphone. Motorists sign up online and then enter their phone number to receive information.

• Citizen Reporting: Motorists can submit driving conditions to the 511 system along a saved route. To use this function, users have to have an account through the “Personalize Your 511” feature. Users take a short online course to get registered. Motorists are advised to report driving conditions after they reach their destination. This is available on the full- featured site, but soon will also be on the truckers’ site.

• Tell Me: Motorists receive handsfree and eyes-free audio notifications on their smartphones about traffic conditions. Users download and open the app before they start driving. The feature uses motorists’ GPS information.

• Traffic Delay: On the traffic map, there is now an orange glow around an icon when there is a traffic delay due to a crash, construction or other traffic-slowing incidents. When users click on the orange glow, information will be provided on delays, travel times and direction of the delay. This is currently available only for interstate driving and shows a delay within two miles in each direction of an incident.

This feature is on the truckers’ and full-featured sites.

• Road Weather Information System Alert: On the full-featured and truckers’ sites, motorists will see a red triangle over a weather station icon when weather conditions such as fog, high winds, rain, ice and snow exist.

Persuasive or Manipulative? -By Dr. John C. Maxwell All leaders are salespersons.

Though they may not be peddling a product, leaders are selling a picture of what the future could be and should be. They seek to persuade others to buy-in to a particular vision.

Unfortunately, skepticism toward leadership abounds throughout society.

Every year since 2004, Harvard’s Center for Public Leadership, in conjunction with Merriman River Group, has compiled the National Leadership Index (NLI) to gauge the public’s confidence in its leaders. In 2011 Americans’ confidence in their leaders hit its lowest point since the NLI’s inception. As a matter of fact, Americans have a lower opinion of their leaders now than they did immediately following the corporate scandals and financial meltdown of 2008.

All Leaders Are (Used Car) Salesmen?

Given how jaded people have become toward those in positions of authority, leaders face a stiff challenge in persuading others to link up with their vision. In today’s climate people distrust the motives

of leaders, disbelieve their promises, and are inclined to second-guess their decision-making. Increasingly, people perceive leaders as having the same detestable qualities as the stereotypical used car salesman: self-interestedness, underhandedness, and manipulation.

Leaders inevitably must convince others to support their vision and/ or decisions, but how can they gain influence with followers who hold them in suspicion? In short, how can leaders be persuasive without being manipulative? Let’s examine three primary ways in which leaders behave manipulatively, and then look at three alternative means of persuasion.

Tactics of a Manipulative Leader 1) They misuse or abuse power Leaders generally enjoy a positional advantage over their followers. That is, they have the authority to issue rewards or mete out punishments. Leaders abuse their power when they tilt the structure of incentives to secure personal advantages or to enhance their own prestige. For example, they may reward unethical behavior if it brings them financial gain, or they may leverage their power to sully the reputation of a subordinate who frequently disagrees with them.

2) They fabricate or withhold information Leaders manipulate people through misinformation. The past decade has

witnessed corporate scandals in which executives have fudged numbers or completely “cooked the books.” Yet, most manipulation happens far more subtly than financial fraud. Leaders may simply mislead their constituents by accentuating the positives of an arrangement while hiding its drawbacks.

For example, a used car salesman may not tell outright lies about the mileage or features of an automobile.

However, he may cover up aspects of the vehicle’s history such as accidents or flood damage. Hence, the resonance of the advertising slogan “Show me the Carfax!”

3) They prey on the emotions of others Manipulative leaders generally are not blind to the needs of others.

In fact, the most deceptive leaders are keenly aware of the wants and aspirations of their people, and they use this knowledge to control others.

To increase their influence, they appeal to hopes and fears while downplaying reasoning and logic.

Tactics of a Persuasive Leader 1) They leverage power to serve and empower others.

All too often organizations treat their employees as if they should be thankful just to have a job.

However, great leaders earn support by developing their people. Such leaders proactively serve as mentors, networkers, equippers, and coaches; they are always on the lookout for ways to empower employees to grow toward their potential.

Application: With respect to those following your lead, ask yourself: “What’s in it for them?”

That is, what do they stand to gain during the process of pursuing the vision of your team/ organization?

2) They speak truthfully, even when the truth hurts.

In the long run, people trust leaders who help them discover the truth, even if it is uncomfortable initially.

Often, the shortest path to

a trusting relationship crosses through some feelings of discomfort. The truth isn’t always pleasant. Leaders help people to get past temporary discomfort and to move toward decisions that will benefit them long-term.

Application: What unpleasant truths does your team presently face? Have you forthrightly informed your team about the unpleasant aspects of your current reality?

3) They underpromise and overdeliver.

Eager to close a sale or secure a commitment, leaders have a bad habit of promising more than they can deliver. By overpromising, they create unrealistic expectations, set up others for disappointment, and ultimately lose respect. The best leaders have selfawareness of what they can offer, and they refuse to enter into agreements based solely on optimism or best-case scenarios. Leaders not only are dealers in hope; they also have the wherewithal to ensure that the hopes they engender are not disappointed.

Application: What promises has your organization made to its customers or clients? Are you meeting, exceeding, or failing to reach the expectations created as a result of those promises?

AN ORDINANCE REGULATING WINTER PARKING ON PUBLIC STREETS

The City Council has determined that for safety concerns, a winter parking/snow removal ordinance is in the best interest of the City of Upsala.

Section 1. When snow has accumulated to a depth that requires plowing and/ or removal as deemed by the City Superintendent; all vehicles including trailers parked and/or standing on city streets and alleys in the City of Upsala shall be towed to an impoundment lot at owners expense.

Section 2. Any law enforcement officer or the Superintendent of Public Works may have a vehicle removed to an impoundment lot, or safe location if left unattended and constitutes an obstruction to traffic or hinders snow removal, or maintenance operations.

Such vehicle shall not be released until the fees for towing and storage are paid.

Section 3. The penalty for violating any provisions of this ordinance is guilty of a petty misdemeanor and may be punished by a maximum fine of up to $300.00 Section 4. The City of Upsala will post on its website and/or leave a recorded message on the City’s main phone number when the snow removal ordinance is in effect.

THIS ORDINANCE SHALL SUPERSEDE AND REPEAL ALL PRIOR AND CONSISTENT ORDINANCES. THIS ORDNANCE SHALL BE EFFECTIVE UPON PASSAGE AND PUBLICATION REQUIRED BY LAW. This 5th day of December 2016.

Winter truck load increases began Thursday, Dec. 22, on unrestricted highways in the central, metro, south and southeast frost zones, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Winter load increases are already in effect for the north and north central frost zones.

Vehicles will be allowed to operate up to 10 percent over the standard legal maximum loads on unrestricted highways during the winter load increase period. However, trucks must comply with current registration weight laws and not exceed registered gross weight tolerances.

Drivers should check with local agencies before increasing any weights on city, county and township routes.

The sign erected on the roadway governs the load limit in effect. A winter weight increase permit is required to take advantage of the 10 percent weight increase on interstate highways only; a permit is not required for state trunk highways.

By Linda Gormanson, DNR Wildfire Prevention Supervisor Q. Do I still need an open burning permit for my brush pile even though it is winter?

A: The snow and cold of a Minnesota winter generally make this time of the year a better and safer time to burn brush piles. However, when there is less than 3 inches of snow cover, open burning permits are required by law. Also, many communities require a burning permit no matter the time of year. Contact a local fire chief to see if a permit is required. Composting and mulching is an alternative to burning and a better way to prevent a potential wildfire.

Contact a local DNR Forestry office to find out if a permit is required before burning any brush pile. For more information about burning permits, visit the DNR website at www.mndnr.gov/ forestry/fire/questions.html.
