Get the passion again -By Harvey Mackay Practically every team in professional sports has one or perhaps more players who were not high draft choices, but have excelled. Look at the National Football League.

Quarterback Tom Brady was drafted 199th in the 2000 NFL draft and has led New England to six Super Bowl titles. Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to four Super Bowl victories, yet was only a third round pick. John Randle from my Minnesota Vikings wasn’t even drafted, yet the defensive tackle is in the NFL Hall of Fame.

How can draft experts and team executives be so wrong?

Easy. You can’t always gauge passion, desire, effort or heart.

As author T. S. Eliot put it, “It is obvious that we can no more explain a passion to a person who has never experienced it than we can explain light to the blind.”

You can detect passion in someone, but trying to predict how far it will carry or what will result are more intangible.

But without real passion, a job is just a place to go.

Passion is at the top of the list of the skills you need to excel at whether you’re in sports, sales or any other occupation.

If you’re in sales, you can have a great product, a tremendous territory

and a fabulous marketing campaign, but if you don’t have passion, it’s hard to make a sale. When you have passion, you speak with conviction, act with authority and present with zeal. When you are excited and passionate about a product – or anything for that matter – people notice. They want in on the action. They want to know what can be so good.

In my decades of experience, I can attest to this simple fact: A salesperson without passion is just an order taker.

There is no substitute for passion.

If you don’t have a deep-down, intense, burning desire for what you are doing, there’s no way you’ll be able to work the long, hard hours it takes to become successful.

The subtitle to one of my books is, “Love what you do and do what you love.” That pretty much sums up passion.

However, I will offer one caveat about passion. If you’re not good at what you are passionate about, it doesn’t matter. I was passionate about becoming a professional golfer at one time, but my mother helped me realize that because I lived in Minnesota where you can only play golf about half the year, it would be difficult for me to catch up with young golfers from warmer climates. Now I’m passionate about golf as a hobby.

Fortunately, I discovered that I was pretty good at selling also, and had been developing that skill since I was a kid.

I loved being able to make customers happy and reaping the benefits. I loved spending time with the old pros that taught me, inspired me and challenged me to get better. I was passionate. And

I still am.

When you start to discover your own passion, my advice is to surround yourself with people who are passionate about their jobs. You’ll catch their passion. And remember that you can’t be passionate when you feel like it. You have to be passionate about your job, product or cause all the time. There’s no off switch on a tiger.

I have always admired the passion demonstrated by the late Steve Jobs, who said, “You have to be burning with an idea, or a problem, or a wrong that you want to right. If you’re not passionate enough from the start, you’ll never stick it out.”

But what do you do when you lose the fire and passion that fueled your ambitions when you were younger?

You can regain your enthusiasm by doing a little introspection.

• Reflect on the past. Draw up a timeline from the very beginning of your childhood and figure out when you were happiest and what got you the most down.

• Find your guideposts. List five or six principles that guide you in life, and decide whether they are values you truly live by or ideas you merely talk about.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Christmas, Looking Back Heading home after a Christmas gathering for most of us involves riding in a heated automobile with padded seats and a total protection from the cold wind.

Our minds drift back to a couple of special people at the party who we found to be the most memorable due to their ability to share experiences with us or their seniority because of age. It is probably quiet in the car, due to the improved roads and a lack of discussion by the passengers. Some of the passengers will be messing with their cell phone. It probably is sort of a Silent Night.

Lets go back to Christmas Eve just over 100 years ago. The family took the wagon to Grandma’s house, because there was only about 6 inches of snow on the ground. The pair of work horses pulling the wagon had been dressed for the season with a belt of tingling bells tied on their necks. There was lots of joyful chatter among the family, which involved many more people than today’s families. The family was excited to take the one hour ride to Grandma’s house to sing some Christmas Carols, open gifts, visit the Grandparents and aunts, uncles and cousins they hadn’t seen in months.

The gifts were usually of little economic value, but are frequently hand made items of clothing. In those days the handkerchiefs, knit socks and scarfs were much appreciated. Many of the clothing items worn by the kids were previously worn by older members of their family. Something new was definitely special.

Part of the celebration included the lunch before returning home.

Grandpa said a Christmas Prayer and then everyone enjoyed the meal, which consisted of home-made bread, several kinds of sausage, kaffee kuchen, pickled fish, jello, jellied cranberries and milk, coffee or cider. Some families near Upsala may have also offered lute-fisk, lefsa and krum-kaka. What made it fun

was that some foods were special, since they usually only appeared at Christmas.

Especially the fruit cake and cookies.

Now it’s time to go home. The stones the family brought into the house to warm up by the stove were gathered up by the warmly clothed family. These were put on the floor-boards of the wagon to keep the feet warmer during the trip home. Everybody seated themselves in the wagon and waited for the blankets to be removed from the horses and used to cover everyone’s lap for extra warmth.

Lots of calling goodbye as the wagon headed toward the very rough road.

(Remember, snow plowing was not part of the township services.)

It will take an hour to get home and everyone soon covers their face and nose to keep out the freezing temperatures.

Soon the kids began to sing some Christmas Carols and the whole family soon joined in. It was definitely not improper to sing loud so that anyone in hearing range would know that the wagon was filled with happy people expressing happiness for the Christmas Holiday.

When they arrived at home, the men-folk took the harnesses off the horses and put them in their barn. Others went to the barn to push the hay up for the cows and re-adjust their bedding.

The girls went to the house to fire up, put away the gifts and get ready for bed, which included standing close to the stove to warm up before all four of them getting into the cold bed.

It was all fun, but I think Christmas Past would be more memorable.

• Make it real. Write down your thoughts, feelings and hopes and share them with your family, or tell them to a trusted friend. That way, there’s someone to witness and hear you out, and you’ll feel responsible for making some changes.

• Don’t panic. You may discover you have developed a new passion for a career change. Follow your dream!

Library Winter Reading Program Begins January 2 “Snow Better Time to Read,” the Winter Reading Program at Great River Regional Library (GRRL) begins Thursday, January 2, 2020.

The program provides fun incentives for readers to settle into cozy winter reading habits. It is designed primarily for teens and adults and is open to anyone in the 6th grade or older.

Each of the 32 branch libraries in the GRRL system will have prize drawings for participants. Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Julie E. Wiecks, age 50, of Wilmot, SD, who died on December 6, 2019, at her home.

A private family memorial service, and inurnment, will be held at a later date.

Julie Elizabeth Massmann was born on August 13,1969, in Sauk Centre, MN, to Frederick and Beatrice (Marthauler)

Massmann. She attended school in Sauk Centre and graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1987. Julie married Tod Wiecks on September 9, 1988, in Little Falls, MN. Julie and Tod lived in many places, eventually settling in Wilmot, SD. She was an artist in many mediums, including oil painting and sketching. A common thread that wove through her life was her love of animals: she loved animals. She loved her dogs, and her chickens, and even raised pheasants. Her favorite animals were eagles, horses, and wolves.

Julie Wiecks is survived by her husband Tod, of Wilmot; daughter, Katie Wiecks, of Bismarck, ND; son Shane Wiecks, of Bismarck; grandson, Wyatt Wiecks; parents, Fred and Bea Massmann of Sauk Centre, MN; sisters: Sharon Henderson, Carol Langer, Mary Boettger, Kim Weishair; brothers: Mark Massmann, Tom Massmann, Greg Massmann; and many nieces and nephews.

Sartell for 35 years, retiring in 1993. He lived in the Avon area most of his life. After retirement he moved to Pine River and later moved back to Avon. His last years were spent at Mother of Mercy Assisted Living in Albany.

Meinie was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon, the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Joseph Court 733, Avon Sportsmen’s Club and a Lifetime Member of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association.

He was an avid baseball fan and especially enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards.

Meinie is survived by his brothers, Steve Raab of Sartell, Joe Raab of St. Joseph, Martin (Pat) Raab of Yankton, SD, Louis Raab of St. Michael; brother-in-law, Stephen Schirmers of Avon; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leo Raab; sisters, Betty Clary, Hilda Chmielewski, Marie Schirmers and infant sister, Agnes.

Betty liked to do “word find”, play bingo, embroidery, patchwork, dancing to old time music and traveling. Betty also enjoyed baking homemade bread and cookies. She loved to spend time in her flower beds and garden. Daily mass was very important to her. She always wanted her children and grandchildren to come visit her. Betty was a long-time member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN. Mary Elizabeth Gerads was born to Joe and Regina (Cremers) Gerads on October 6, 1928 in Albany, Minnesota. She was raised in St. Francis, Minnesota and attended school in Upsala until the 10th grade. Betty married the love of her life George Suska on August 29, 1950 in Sobieski, MN, where they lived and farmed until retirement. They moved to Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls in 2005.

Betty then moved to Alverna Apartments in 2015 where she resided until her death. She loved the staff at Alverna, especially Joyce and Kathy. Betty worked at Munsingwear for a few years. She enjoyed spending

DNR officials stress snowmobile safety as Albany man jailed after rear-ending US fatal crashes trend up Postal Service carrier’s vehicle Conservation officers from the Department of Natural Resources are reminding all snowmobile riders to make safety their priority as the number of fatal crashes around the state has trended upward the past few years.

Three riders have died so far this winter and there have been other close calls, including snowmobiles that have gone through the ice and an instance in which a person was hit while walking on the ice. Last winter, 10 riders lost their lives in snowmobile-related crashes, five died the year before and three people died in 2015-16.

“We want people enjoying the Minnesota winter, but we want them to do it safely,” said Bruce Lawrence, recreational vehicle coordinator with the DNR’s Enforcement Division.

Snow cover throughout Minnesota, including on many of the 22,000 miles of trails that traverse the state (varying local conditions mean not all are yet groomed), have led to a surge in the number of people taking advantage of a fun and unique way to enjoy Minnesota’s outdoors.

“Passing along your passion for the outdoors is one of the greatest gifts you can give another person,” he said. “By modeling safe behavior, you can ensure that passion lives on in youngsters and new snowmobile riders.”

Lawrence offers the following tips to ensure a safe ride:

Stay on marked trails. The state’s snowmobile clubs work hard to keep trails in good riding condition. Riders who stay on groomed trails are less likely to strike an obstacle or trespass onto private property. In parts of the state, wet conditions where trails go through low areas or across lakes mean trails aren’t yet groomed. Riders should plan ahead and check trail conditions before heading out.

Leave the booze at home. Drinking and riding is one of two main factors in crashes, and plays a role in about 60 percent of those that are fatal.

Watch the speed. Going too fast is the other main factor in crashes. Many serious and fatal crashes occur when a speeding snowmobiler loses control or strikes an object.

Be careful on the ice. During the past two winters, every through-the-ice fatality but one has involved people who were riding a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle when they fell through. There must be at least 5 to 7 inches of new, clear ice to support the weight of a snowmobile and rider.

Take a snowmobile safety course. It’s required of anyone born after 1976 and recommended for everyone. People with snowmobile safety certification are less likely to be involved in serious or fatal crashes.

On Friday, December 20, at approximately 5:24 p.m. the Stearns County Communications Center received a report of a crash with injuries at 21245 County Road 154. This location is just east of County Road 10, and northeast of Albany city limits.

Alice Theisen, 60, of Albany was driving a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and was delivering mail for the US Postal Service.

She was stopped at a mailbox and was struck from behind by a 2005 Ford F-150. The driver of the F-150 fled the scene.

Deputies located the F-150 and identified the driver as Jonathon Boundy, 31, of Albany. Mr. Boundy exhibited signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested.

He was booked into the Stearns County Jail on charges of Criminal Vehicular Operation resulting in injury-gross misdemeanor, 2nd Degree DWI, and Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Crash.

Automotive Advice from The Under the Hood® Show

Dear Motor Medics, I used the remote start on my 2004 Chevy Silverado to warm it up the other morning and came out to find my interior filled with smoke. I did not see smoke coming out of any area, so I aired it out and drove to work. I have checked all the electrical functions and the only thing I find that does not work is the heater fan high speed. Could this be what was smoking?

-Steven in Kalamazoo, Michigan Dear Steven, The interior HVAC blower fan system could have been the source of the smoke. Blower resistor failures are common as vehicles age. The blower windings break down over time and the resistance on the circuit increases, this extra resistance causes the resistor to run much hotter than it should. Eventually the resistor can fail and sometimes it will let off smoke. In addition to the resistor failing some vehicles have issues with the wires that attach to the resistor and the connector plug melting. In the case of the Silverado it is a common issue and some of them were subject to a recall so check with your local dealership for more information.

Most important of all to remember is to stop driving a vehicle when you see or smell smoke. Fire spreads quickly in a vehicle and you can be overcome by the fumes of the many materials used in its construction. Always think about your safety first.

The thermostat is responsible for keeping the engine temperature at a steady level so that you have proper heat available for the interior and proper operating temperature for the engine to operate efficiently. When a thermostat does not allow the engine to warm to a certain level on OBDII vehicles the computer responds by turning on the check engine light. Another effect of low temps is a decrease in fuel mileage due to continued fuel mixture enrichment. In the past, our vehicles used carburetors with chokes on them to enrich the fuel mixture for proper running until the engine was warm. Around the early eighties this changed to electronic fuel injection and is now controlled by the engine computer. If the thermostat does not regulate the engine temperature properly the computer may continue to enrich the fuel mixture causing the vehicle to have poor mileage.

Thermostats should be serviced when the coolant is flushed or when they fail to operate as designed.

Burtrum City November 4, 2019 The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 pm on Monday, November 4th, 2019 by Mayor Ron Strassburg. Those in attendance included: Ronald Strassburg, Carrie Wiechmann, Deb VanHavermaet, Mitchell Bruggenthies, Sharon Erickson, and Kevin Rohde.

The meeting minutes from October 7th, 2019 were read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet, seconded by Kevin Rohde, upon vote motion was carried and the minutes were accepted.

Next the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Kevin Rohde and seconded by Deb VanHavermaet.

The City Council then discussed outstanding/routine bills and upon a motion made by Mitchell Bruggenthies and seconded by Kevin Rohde, the bills were paid.

Regarding old business, no old business to discuss Next, in new business, a resolution has been made for the Burtrum City hall to be the polling location for the 2020 elections, vote motion made first by Deb Vanhavermet and seconded by Mitchell Bruggenthies As there was no further topics to discuss the meeting was adjourned with a motion first made by Sharon Erickson on and seconded

Some residential property clean up will be done this month.

-These are unapproved minutes Carrie Wiechmann, Burtrum City Clerk Grey Eagle City November 12, 2019 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joseph Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 12th day of November 2019 in council chambers.

Council members present were Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann, Roland Ahrendt and Brian Hollenkamp. There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Dan Berscheid, John Call, Lori Hellmann and guests Meaghan Wieber and Greg Stang.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the October 8, 2019 meeting with one change as follows: page 1731, item #3, change the word repaid with the word repair. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Greg Stang from People Service provided the council with three possible options for the water and wastewater system contract. Option #1: $9,764 per month would include the following: full time operations and management of the water and wastewater systems, responsible for locates and customer turn on/off, perform routine maintenance, testing and reporting and maintain certification compliance. Option #2: $1,760 per month would include the following: Monday through Friday daily visits and operational oversight/certification compliance. This option would not include locates or customer turn on/off. Option #3: $625 per month would include the following: one time per week visit for certification coverage, required sampling and testing. This option would not include locates or customer turn on/off. With option #2 or option #3, the hourly rate of $70/$105 applies for call-outs or anything

else outside of the scope requests.

The council will discuss the matter further and make a decision at the December meeting.

Meaghan Wieber was in attendance to ask for a variance to the number of dogs per household. She is moving into the City and currently has three dogs. One is in bad health, all are spayed and/or neutered and all shots are up to date.

Meaghan stated that she will clean up after her dogs. A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the variance for Meaghan to keep three dogs with the understanding that the dogs will be licensed and if something happens to one of the dogs she would not be allowed to replace it. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Dan Berscheid provided the following Fire Department update: 1. Bayer has the barrel done and is requesting 30% completion payment. Chassis should be in at the end of the month.

2. The Fire Department currently has 2 Registered Nurses on the roster.

The council discussed the information from People Service and requested the Clerk to obtain more information regarding the scope of services that will be provided under Option #2. Once the information is obtained, the Council will have a better idea of what the job duties would be for the part time employee.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve Resolution No. 2019-11, A Resolution Authorizing and Providing for the Incurrence of Indebtedness for the Purpose of Providing a Portion of the Cost of Acquiring, Constructing, Enlarging, Improving, and/or Extending It’s Sewer System Facility to Serve an Area Lawfully Within Its Jurisdiction to Serve. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. A copy of the resolution will be permanently attached to these minutes for future review.

The Council discussed snow removal on sidewalks within the City. Current ordinance requires that snow and/or ice must be removed from ANY sidewalk within 24 hours after the fall or accumulation. Residents are reminded that it is up to each individual property owner to make sure that snow and/ or ice is removed from the sidewalk.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the Double R

Saloon Liquor License application.

All fees for the liquor licenses must be paid before any license will be given, and the licenses must be picked up at City Hall during office hours. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the Tobacco License applications for the Double R Saloon, the Junction, Dollar General and Grey Eagle Gas and Grocery. All fees for the tobacco licenses must be paid before any license will be given, and the license must be picked up at City Hall during office hours. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk reported on the information she received regarding the windows in the Old Village Hall. Any windows replaced must be replaced with wood. Vinyl and aluminum are not desirable material on a building with historical value.

The Council directed the Clerk to send a letter to a resident, informing them that any vehicles, trailers, etc., must be parked a minimum of ten feet from the edge of any alley or road, that no cleaning of snow may take place within any road or alley, that snow is not to be pushed across any road or alley and that the trailer parked at the end of the dead end road must be removed immediately.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve Resolution

No. 2019-12, A Resolution Amending the $1,125,000 General Obligation Temporary Sewer Revenue Note, Series 2018A and Providing for its Reissuance. A second was made by Bill Pohlmann and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. A copy of the resolution will be permanently attached to these minutes for future review.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the Financial Consulting Agreement with Northland Securities, Inc. A second was made by Roland Ahrendt and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The Clerk provided information to the Council from a meeting held in Long Prairie regarding the 2020 Census. The purpose of the Census is to count every person one time and one time only. The Census count helps determine how much money a community may be entitled to that comes in many different forms. The Census forms have been shortened and most people can do it online from home or at any public library. Census information will start going out in March of 2020.

There were no building permits for council consideration.

The Council discussed the Main Street Christmas decorations.

It was decided to use what we have and look at other options in the future.

Chico reported that the cutting blades on the snow plow truck and the turbo have been replaced. He also reported on information from

his recent Minnesota Rural Water Association training on winterizing your water system.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the fund transfer of $148.12 from the General Fund of which $31.12 goes to the Water Fund and $117 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall, Old Village Hall and Library utilities.

A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include the payment of the following additional items: $310 to Minnesota Pollution Control, $125 to Minnesota Rural Water Association, $200 to Central Minnesota Credit Union, $1,936.19 to Minnesota Power, $207.13 to First State Bank of Swanville, $23,320 to Central Minnesota Credit Union and $18,708.53 for Grey Eagle Volunteer Relief Association. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

U of M Cow/Calf Days Event to be held in Staples on January 21 University of Minnesota Extension will be holding the annual Cow/Calf Days workshop in Staples on Tuesday, January 21st starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Commons Area at Central Lakes College. This event has been held for over 45 years and continues to be the leading information, technology, and research outlet for cow/calf producers in the state of Minnesota.

This year’s event will feature information on: opportunities to evaluate carcass genetics in your beef herd, scours prevention in beef cattle herds, improving profits, and managing calves pre & post weaning. The corresponding tradeshow will feature vendors with new information, technology, and products with a wide-array of practical uses for the operators in the cow-calf sector.

The program is directed at cow/calf producers, allied industry representatives, and is open to the public. A meal

will be served with the program and a registration fee of $10 per person will include the meal, proceedings book, and program materials. The program is approximately three hours long.

My fiancé and I are in agreement about how to handle money, and we both follow your plan. Do you recommend pre-marital counseling?

If so, what do you feel are some of the important areas of agreement for couples before they get married?

-Allison Dear Allison, Congratulations! I’m glad you’re both on the same page with your finances, too.

I’ve worked with thousands of couples and numerous marriage counselors over the years. In that time, I’ve learned fights over money—and the resulting problems from those disagreements—are probably the biggest cause of divorce in America.

In my opinion, in-depth pre-marital counseling is an absolute must. The idea of entering into something that’s supposed to be a lifelong commitment, without thoroughly addressing all the issues—and potential issues—is a really bad idea.

With that said, it’s been my experience that couples have a high probability of a successful marriage if they agree on four things, in detail, before the big day—kids, money,

religion, and in-laws. With kids, the big question is do you want them?

If so, how many and when? Are you going to let them run wild, or are you going to provide structure and make them behave?

When it comes to money, something it sounds like you two are already in agreement on, get all your cards out on the table, and construct an intelligent game plan for your finances that you both agree on. Staying away from debt, living on a written, monthly budget, and saving for the future are important parts of this.

Also, be in agreement on religion.

Statistically speaking, two people from the same faith have a better chance of making a marriage work. And finally, when it comes to your future in-laws, you need to learn who they are and what you’re getting into. What are they really like? What are the boundaries when it comes to their influence on your lives?

All these topics should be discussed at length, dealt with, and agreed upon before the rings are exchanged. God bless you two, Allison!

Common angler question: Does my ice shelter need a license?

As more anglers prepare for ice fishing, the DNR sometimes receives questions about ice shelter licenses.

Minnesota fishing regulations recognize two types of shelters: portable and nonportable. A portable shelter is one that collapses, folds or is disassembled for transportation. Portable shelters only need licenses and identification when left unattended, which is defined as all occupants being more than 200 feet away. In contrast, all nonportable ice shelters must be licensed. Wheeled fish houses are not considered portable and must be licensed.

Birds make surviving winter look easy

By Val Cunningham In the bird world, there’s no such thing as down time, no kicking back or chilling out. Being a bird is a dangerous and energy expensive business, with some big, new task always on the horizon.

Summer was busy with raising a brood of youngsters and getting them launched into the world. Next on the calendar is molting, replacing their plumage with sturdy, fresh feathers for winter. Many bird species also add to their downy base layer to help hold body heat.

Both raising young and molting are major drains on a bird’s energy budget, but an even bigger one lies ahead—surviving winter.

Many fewer birds are in the woods and in our backyards after the majority migrated to warmer areas, and those that do remain are in for a tough season. Getting through winter requires large stores of endurance, resilience and luck.

I think most of us don’t give much thought to the sheer effort birds put into surviving each winter day. The fact that we can observe birds going about their daily lives outside our ice-rimmed windows doesn’t mean that winter isn’t life-threatening or that birds don’t have to throw everything they’ve got at the cold.

Serious business After a night spent huddled up in a tree hole or clinging to a conifer branch, birds emerge in the morning desperate for calories to keep their metabolisms racing in high gear. Most songbirds maintain an internal temperature of around 104 degrees, and this requires large and regular inputs of food.

According to naturalist Donald Stokes, “Relatively few bird species have adapted to survive winter in the North, and their most important adaptation may well be the ability to find food.”

Winter’s birds have to be masters of foraging out in nature, and chickadees are at the top of the class. They cling to twigs and bark, searching for sleeping spiders and insect larvae. They roam a feeding territory, which may include our bird feeders, on a regular basis, snatching up whatever’s available. Weighing less than a third of an ounce, chickadees need to be about 11 percent fatter by nightfall, then they burn that fat layer as they shiver all night to generate heat.

A number of birds hide food in scattered spots to retrieve later in the winter. Chickadees do this, as do blue jays and nuthatches. Studies have shown that a chickadee remembers where it has stored each bit of food, its hippocampus growing by about 30% each autumn precisely for this seasonal task (and then shrinking each spring).

and suet, while hairy, downy and red-bellied woodpeckers peck at and drill into trees for insects but also are regular visitors to feeders stocked with peanuts and suet. Brown creepers spiral up tree trunks in their hunt for insect larvae, while nuthatches spiral down the trunk, each bird finding items the other may have missed.

A number of readers express concern that bird feeders may make birds dependent on human handouts, but this doesn’t happen. Birds flock in to feeders because they are a “resource patch,” providing easy, quick calories. But birds continue to circulate along their feeding routes each day, never putting all their eggs in one basket.

In wintertime, feeders are a boon to birds, not a crutch. Each peanut, nutmeat and suet bit helps a bird survive the day. And that’s what it’s all about in wintertime, putting on enough calories to survive the cold nights, then waking up to do it all over again.

The next time you look out the window at a little junco hopping over the frozen ground, a blue jay snatching a peanut or a brilliant cardinal perched on a snowy branch, you might offer a salute to valiant creatures who put it all on the line, every single day.

Build a sheltering brush pile for shelter out of tree and shrub prunings.

Side Note: For downy woodpeckers that live near fields of Canada goldenrod, December is feast time: The small woodpeckers prize the fly larvae that create those lumpy galls on goldenrod stalks, pecking a hole and pulling out the juicy treat.

By Val Cunningham Mix your own high-energy treats: 1 cup rendered suet, butter, lard or vegetable shortening 1 cup chunky peanut butter 3 cups ground cornmeal ½ cup flour Melt the first two ingredients together, then mix in the cornmeal and flour. At this point you could add some chopped, unsalted nuts, and/or chopped dried fruit and/or birdseed. Pour into a pan or ice cube trays, refrigerate, then break into smaller pieces and freeze, offering portions in a suet feeder or platform tray.

Here’s a thought: Forget about failure as some giant monster lurking around the corner just waiting to crush your dreams. Yes, we will all experience failure on some level from time to time, but it doesn’t have to result in a death spiral.

The best thing you can do to decrease the intensity of a failure is to get feedback. Look for people who work in and have experience in the industry you want to move into. Trust me, they’ve made their own mistakes. And if they’re

Going South for the winter?

Senior Cathleen Rieffer has been selected as this year’s Swanville High School Triple ‘A’ nominee.

The Triple ‘A’ award recognizes top high school seniors who have excelled in Academics, Arts and Athletics. Every member school of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is invited to nominate one female and one male for the Triple ‘A’ Award.

Cathleen Rieffer, daughter of Joel and Gail, has participated in band, theater and speech during her time in high school. She has also participated in Ten-

nis, Track and Field and Just for Kix dance. Cathleen is consistently on the ‘A’ honor roll and has been taking college level classes during high school.

Her future plans are to attend either Hamlin University or The University of North Dakota with an intended major of Forensic Science.

Triple ‘A’ Award winners are selected through a multi-level process involving member schools of the League, the League’s administrative regions, and a special committee of educators, business leaders, and members from fine arts and athletic communities. The Triple ‘A’ Award On-Court Recognition Ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Boys’ State Basketball Tournament in March. The top two award finishers from each region will be invited to the banquet. League Officials will announce the four Triple ‘A’ Award recipients at the banquet.
