Be happy beyond the holidays -By Harvey Mackay

This time of year, we often hear the greeting “Happy Holidays.” Are we really happy just because the holidays are here? Or is there a way to be happy all year long?

We are as happy as we decide to be. No one can tell us to be happy. Happiness is a state of mind.

Benjamin Franklin was concluding a moving speech on the guarantees of the Constitution when a heckler shouted out, “Aw, those words don’t mean anything. Where’s all the happiness you say it guarantees us?” Franklin smiled and calmly silenced his critic.

“My friend, the Constitution only guarantees the American people the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself.”

That’s why my friend Wally “Famous” Amos said, “Happiness is an inside job.” By the way, Wally makes lots of people happy with his cookies!

I believe we were born to be happy.

The happiest people I know are not the richest or most attractive or even the best at what they do. The happiest people are those who discover that what they should be doing and what they are doing are the same things.

That’s because happiness doesn’t come from just doing what you like – it’s from liking what you do. True happiness lies in satisfaction, which has nothing

I recently received an email from a reader who wrote, “Happy people achieve better results and are typically more successful.” I like to say: Make it your business to be happy and your business will be happy.

As a customer, you can surely tell the difference between a business that practices happiness and one that merely exists to make money. Businesses that are serious about succeeding find ways to make customers happy. Why do you think McDonald’s sells Happy Meals?

What makes Disneyland the “happiest place on earth?” Certainly, happiness hasn’t hurt their bottom lines.

So where do you start on a path to happiness in business and life in general? Here are 10 commandments inspired by The Happiness Project that might improve your outlook if you strive to follow them daily: 1) Take it easy.

2) Be yourself.

3) Handle your responsibilities.

4) Exercise understanding 5) Face your fears.

6) Leave your worries behind.

7) Live honestly.

8) Behave positively.

9) Open your heart and mind.

10) Share your time, attention and talents with others.

There is an ancient Indian legend about a little-known tribe that was constantly at war with other Indian tribes. They abused their religion and their families, had no morals or feelings for others, laughed at any kind of order.

The violent tribe seemed doomed to wipe themselves off the face of the earth.

It troubled the old chief to see his tribe self-destruct, so he gathered a few of his trusted braves and held a council to discuss how they could save their tribe from themselves. The wise chief decided the only thing to do was to take the secret of happiness and success away from those who abused it. They would hide it where no one would ever find it again, but where?

One brave suggested they bury the secret of happiness and success deep in

the earth. But the chief said, “No, for man will dig deep down in the earth and find it.”

Another said to sink the secret into the dark depths of the deepest ocean.

But again the chief replied, “No, man will learn to dive into the dark depth of the ocean and will find it.”

A third thought they should take it to the top of the highest mountain and hide it there. But again the chief said, “No, man will eventually climb even the highest of mountains and find it.”

Finally the old chief had the answer: “Here is what we will do with the secret of happiness and success. We will hide it deep inside of man himself, for he will never think to look for it there.”

And the chief was correct. To this day, according to that old Indian legend, people have been searching all over the earth – digging, diving and climbing – searching for something that they already possess within themselves.

Lucky for you, you now know the secret.

Todd County Sheriff’s Final Newsletter Senior Dining Menus: Dec. 30-Jan. 3

By Todd County Sheriff Peter J. Mikkelson Due to circumstances affecting my benefits, I have chosen to retire from my position as Sheriff effective 12-30-2013.

The County had offered a health insurance benefit to retirement eligible employees where they would pay for single health insurance coverage for three years upon retirement. The County Board took that benefit away. Todd County elected Officials went to the Board and asked if we could be exempt, finish our current term, and still receive the benefit. The County Board did not exempt us. Because of the loss of this benefit, I need to retire this year to still be eligible for the benefit. I had always planned on finishing my term prior to this decision by the Board. Initially I was upset that I would have to leave before my term was up.

Now I am looking forward to retirement.

I have a total of 34 years of experience in the Law Enforcement profession and the job has been very good to me.

I was first elected as Todd County Sheriff in 2007 and I am currently in my second term. Throughout my tenure as Sheriff, we have successfully handled many major incidents. I definitely can’t take credit for everything that we have handled. There are many excellent employees that have made my job easier.

The technology that is used in the Sheriff’s Office has seen major improvements and there are large projects that continue to be pursued. We have had to spend a large amount of time updating the radio and paging systems and are currently in a cooperative joint powers agreement with Douglas and Wadena County’s to upgrade the 911 phone an-

swering system. In 2009, we installed computers in our squads and updated every aspect of our records system. This was a major project and we were able to get a discounted price with a company that was new to the business because we were the first agency in Minnesota to sign up with their product. At that time, they had 4 employees. They have now grown to over 50 employee’s and are implementing their product in numerous Minnesota Law Enforcement Agencies.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my years in Law Enforcement and have especially enjoyed serving as the Todd County Sheriff. I will miss many of the people that I have worked with through the years. I truly appreciate the support that I have received from the citizens of Todd County who had the faith in me to elect me to the position of Sheriff.

My retirement has come a year before it was expected so I haven’t had a lot of time to make plans for my retirement. I do have hobbies that I enjoy and I look forward to spending more time with family and friends.

I truly appreciate everyone in the Sheriff’s Office and throughout Todd County for the support that you have given me. I have really enjoyed it but I do realize it’s time to move on.

Obituaries Norbert John Heinen

Cold Spring Granite Company, and he farmed for awhile near St. Francis. In 1966, he purchased his dad’s farm and farmed there until he retired in 1995.

Norbert enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He was a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church.

Norbert is survived by his wife, Marie Heinen, Albany; his children, John (Lori) Heinen, St. Joseph; Mary (Rick) Rosen, Albany; Ann (Ed) Willenbring, Richmond; Theresa (Joe) Ritter, Sauk Centre; Rita (John) Lahr, St. Joseph; Darlene (Andrew) Vossen, Litchfield; and Marlene (Mike) Seerup, Cottage Grove.

He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Anna Boeckers, Albany; Dorothy Bloch, Albany; Dolores (Robert) Weyer, Sauk Rapids; Mildred (Richard) Nienaber, Freeport; Arnold (Lorraine) Heinen, Albany; David (Margaret) Heinen, Waite Park; Gerald (Ione) Heinen, Albany; Rosemary (Thomas) Nienaber, Burtrum; Vernon (Karen) Heinen, Albany; and 23 grandchildren.

Norbert is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Marcella Heinen, his sons Donald Heinen and Ronald Heinen, his daughter-in-law, Lisa Heinen, his granddaughter, Kaitlyn Berg and his sister, Margaret Chock.

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Norbert J. Heinen, age 82 of St. Anthony, will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 27 at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, north of Albany.

Fr. Michael Naughton, OSB will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. Norbert died Saturday at the Melrose Area Hospital. There will be a visitation from 4-8:00 PM Thursday and again after 10:00 AM Friday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany. St. Anthony parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home in Albany.

Norbert was born May 7, 1931 in Albany Township to Martin and Anna (Eiynk) Heinen. He married Marcella Fischer on November 15, 1956, she died in 1968. Norbert married Marie Wolbeck on October 25, 1969. Norbert worked for Meyer Construction, drove truck for Landy Packing Company, worked for

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Marie Vos, age 87 of Albany, will be at 11:00 AM December 28, 2013 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Michael Naughton, OSB will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Marie passed away peacefully at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany Friday. There will be a visitation from 4:00-8:00 PM Friday December 27, 2013 and again after 10:00 AM Saturday at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany. Parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM followed by the Christian Mothers praying the rosary at 4:30 PM Friday night at the funeral home. Arrangements are being made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home.

Marie was born on April 21, 1926 in New Munich, MN to Joseph and Josepha (Middendorf) Hiltner. She married Raymond J. Vos on October 19, 1948 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. The couple lived on a farm near St. Anthony until 1997 when they retired and moved to Albany. Marie was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and Seven Dolors Christian Mothers in

She was an Avon Lady from 19662008. Marie was an avid bowler; she was on a league from 1988-2000. She loved playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; they often requested that she make her famous homemade pancakes, chocolate chip cookies and lemon bars.

She is survived by her loving children Glenn (Joan) Vos, Avon, Janet (Roger) Blenker, Avon, Janice (Ken) Linn, St. Cloud, Mary Lou (Tom) Groetsch, Avon, Marlene (Bob) Serfling, Buffalo, Beverly (John) Overman, Albany, Bonnie (Randy) Karsch, Albany and Neal Vos (Julie Pratt), Albany; 17 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond in 2003; grand-daughter Rachel Dallman; brothers Joseph Jr. and George Hiltner; sisters Edna Cherne and Louise Loxterkamp; brothers-in-law Tony Cherne and Tony Loxtercamp.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I live in Los Angeles, and my daughter makes $3,000 to $5,000 a month modeling.

I don’t want her to become spoiled by this job and the income, and I need advice on what to do with the money.

Should it be put aside for a car, and do you think she should have to pay for something like that herself?

-Lisa Dear Lisa, So how do we keep a high-income, high-profile job from ruining this little girl? I think a lot of it has to do with her interaction with you, and how you gently mold her work ethic and attitude. Don’t let her become a diva.

She’s not there to be fawned over or placed on a pedestal. She’s there to serve. That means working hard and doing the best she can. That’s her job whether she’s flipping burgers or making $5,000 a month modeling. The money’s nice, but what we’re really doing is making sure she learns some important life lessons. And you’re still being a parent, not a friend or peer, through every moment.

When it comes to the money, you guys should sit down and discuss some goals for the future. I think it’s important that any car purchase be reasonable, because the best thing a kid this age could do with that kind of money is save up for college. Even if she goes to school on a full scholarship, she should be driving something lowkey. Just because she gets a free ride in college doesn’t mean she gets to cruise the streets in a Lamborghini. Set the rest of it aside for when life really begins—after college.

As her mom, it’s very important that you teach her these lessons now.

It’s essential, too, that you don’t surrender the position of parent, teacher and leader. Chances are when this young lady is 34, no one will give a flip that she modeled for a while as

a teenager. The most important things here are the lessons taught and learned, not the money.

-Dave Dear Dave, My husband and I have about $60,000 in federally insured student loans. Can our wages be garnished if we’re paying less than the actual payment amount? If so, how far behind do we have to be for that to happen?

-Jennifer Dear Jennifer, To the best of my knowledge there’s no set formula for making this determination. In counseling people, we find some folks who are two years behind making payments before anything is done, while others are flagged at just a couple of months.

In reality, they can garnish you immediately if you’re paying less than the agreed-upon amount. But in most cases they won’t mess with you as long as there’s reasonable activity on the account.

The thing most people don’t realize about student loans is that a lawyer doesn’t have to be involved for them to garnish your wages. It’s a lot like the IRS in that they don’t have to sue you in order to take your wages. Congress gave them that power because it’s a federally insured loan. And in my mind, that’s way too much power.

If you’re having trouble making your payments, don’t just throw up your hands and default. Talk to them about a deferral, and keep sending them whatever you can. It’s always better to be proactive than reactive in situations like these. Let them know you want to make good on your obligation, and ask what you can do to make this happen under terms you can afford.

Emily Beseman has been chosen as the December Student of the Month for grades 7-9. Emily is in seventh grade and is the daughter of Tom and Theresa Beseman.

Emily is very active in school activities participating in volleyball, basketball and softball. She was on the Honor Roll for fall quarter.

“Emily is a wonderful student to have in class. She sets high expectations for herself and works hard to achieve them. She is a very mature young lady who never complains, or makes excuses when things do not go as planned,” states Social Studies teacher Tom Bzdok. He adds, “She has a positive attitude, an eagerness to learn, and encourages classmates in a positive manner. Emily is the type of student who will make the right decisions in life, and is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face.”

Outside of school Emily is active in her community, often volunteering her time for clean up days. She participated in the 2013 Knights of Columbus State Free Throw contest. She attended We Day this fall. She has been awarded the Presidential Award in Physical Fitness all throughout her elementary years. She enjoys playing basketball, hanging out with her

friends and spending time outdoors with her brother.

Liza Hasse, Math teacher adds, “Emily Beseman is a remarkable student to work with. She always has a smile and a kind word to share with those around her. In class, she is a conscientious student and she works hard to always do her best. Emily will seek help when she needs it and is willing to offer help to those in need. She is respectful towards the staff and her peers. Emily continuously displays positive leadership and a positive attitude. She is a wonderful student to have in class and I look forward to continue working with her over the years to come.”

Emily plans on attending college and majoring in veterinary science.

She would like to play college basketball also. She wants other students to know “Participate as much as you canyou get to meet new people and make new friends.”

Upsala Students Win Region 5A Triple “A” Award

We journeyed long. We journeyed hard. In our great efforts to comply. We all needed to be counted, Unborn Baby, Mary, and I. The long trip would soon be fulfilled. Over the hill we would find rest. The inn would be warm, inviting, And for them I would find the best.

I knocked on the door, no room there. My Mary was looking so worn.

I checked several other places- She said baby soon would be born.

I begged for someone to help us. To

give us a room for the night. One beared, kind, gentle old man said, rest in his stable we might.

Some individuals teach and preach a “Dalmatian Theology.” They believe that the Word of God is only inspired in certain “spots.”

How dangerous. If we pick and choose what we like and pick and choose what we do not like, it is not God’s Word that we believe, but what we want to believe about God’s Word.

Paul wrote that “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.”

To pick and choose what we think is right or wrong in the Bible would leave gaps in the Gospel and leave out steps in salvation. It would be living on my terms and not God’s terms.

While this may be comfortable and convenient, it is not God honoring or Christ exalting. It would not lead me into God’s likeness, but into my selfishness. It would be doing what I want to do, not what God expects me to do.

Minnesotans Still Unsure About MNSure

By Senator Paul Gazelka It’s been a busy week in St. Paul.

The day after Republican lawmakers demanded answers from Governor Dayton as to how Minnesotans will continue to be covered with health insurance, MNSure’s Executive Director resigned from her position. It appears it was because she took a vacation to Costa Rica during the critical rollout period of a new website that affects the lives of every Minnesotan.

While her apparent negligence would certainly make her resignation acceptable, it still doesn’t provide the answers we’re looking for to keep Minnesotans covered with health insurance.

Minnesotans expected to continue to have health insurance when Democratic lawmakers voted to implement Obamacare in Minnesota earlier this year.

My colleagues and I in the Senate and House Republican Caucuses have repeatedly voiced our concerns to the Democratic creators of this legislation.

To quote an article I read recently from columnist Bill Randall of the Washington Times, “Democrats created Obamacare in their own image. They own it absolutely, in a way that no other party has owned such a major piece of legislation before.”

Problems with MNSure have persisted for 77 days. With that said, for the

sake of the well-being of Minnesotans, I believe it is critical to help Democrats and Governor Dayton find a solution to the problems they’ve created.

Partisan bickering at such a critical time will only hurt Minnesotans further.

We need to come together to find solutions to the fact that with little time remaining until the deadline to complete enrollment and to make sure Minnesotans receive coverage, Minnesotans are still unsure about MNSure.

Here is where MNSure currently stands: • The MNSure website cost of over $150,000,000, and continually crashes.

• MNSure call center wait times are often over an hour long.

•1,000 Minnesotans who completed MNSure enrollment were told they need a “do-over.”

• 140,000 Minnesotans were forced off plans they liked by Obamacare mandates.

• MNSure deductibles are the highest in the nation, meaning higher costs for Minnesota families.

• MNSure has yet to issue a single insurance policy card, meaning no one is enrolled yet.

• All of this is a result of adopting Obamacare in Minnesota, a state which was once able to claim a nation-leading health insurance system.

At the end of the day, I stand ready and willing to work with anyone, Democrat or Republican, to find a solution to the problems Minnesotans are facing with MNSure.

Talent Search on for Upsala’s Community Variety Show VI A talent search for the “finest and funniest” from the Upsala area is now underway to fill the program for the Upsala Community Variety Show VI set for Sunday, February 23. A wide variety of acts are being sought, including musical numbers, skits, stunts, lip syncs, and dances. Four prizes will be awarded: $100 for “Best of Show,” $75 for second place, $50 for third, and $25 for fourth.

Audience vote will determine the winners.

Limited to five minutes each, all performances must be in good taste and be appropriate for the entire family. Both comedy and serious entries by area residents of all ages are welcome. Applications are subject to audition to control quality and show length. All program decisions will be made by the Variety Show Program Committee. Sign up deadline is February 1.

Upsala’s first Community Variety Show, sponsored by the UP*TEAM, was held in February 2003 with great success and enjoyment. “Elvis” and his Upsalaires captured first place in a memorable Variety Show II in 2006. A pillow dance team won the 2008 “Best of Show” and in 2010 the “The Beached Boys” surfed their way to the honor. The 2012 winners, a group of Upsala high school friends, called themselves “The No Name Band” and won the crowd over with a fun collection of love songs.

Five years later: a promise of cleaner water, healthier environment

By Tom Landwehr, Commissioner, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Five years ago this month, Minnesotans went to the polls and took a bold action and approved a landmark conservation initiative known as the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.

On the eve of Thanksgiving, I’d like to reflect on this important constitutional amendment. During the past five years, the amendment has been fulfilling its promise of creating lasting investments in clean water, healthier habitat, better parks and trails and a robust arts and cultural heritage. It is something we can all be thankful for.

In approving the Legacy Amendment, Minnesota voters imposed a three-eighths of 1 percent tax on themselves for 25 years until 2034. Just five years later, that tax has generated more than a billion dollars for Legacy projects, of which the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has been allocated about one-fifth of Legacy dollars – or roughly $215 million.

The DNR has invested your Legacy Amendment dollars wisely to protect, maintain, and enhance natural landscapes, healthy watersheds and the public places that make it possible to experience them to the fullest. Legacy funds are also providing opportunities like never before to “open doors” to outdoor recreation, particularly for young people.

You can learn about these investments on the DNR website at www.mndnr.gov/legacy, but I’d like to highlight a few of them here: The DNR oversees 689 wildlife management areas in the agency’s 32-county “southern” region of the state. While these public lands comprise only 1.19 percent of the total land in these counties, they represent some of the most ecologically diverse and important lands in the region. The DNR is working hard to improve and expand on these lands using Legacy dollars from the Outdoor Heritage Fund.

During the last three years, three roving “habitat crews” have enhanced 23,000 acres of grasslands through controlled burns, plantings and restoration - nearly doubling the DNR’s capacity to make this habitat better. Additionally, Legacy dollars have been used to enhance large blocks of grassland by removing woody invasive species and seeding new prairie. In the southern part of the state alone, 6,500 acres of grassland habitat have been enhanced and 820 acres of new grassland have been seeded.

In our Parks and Trails Division, more people than ever are having positive experiences in nature as a result of Legacy funding for expanded programming, such as the “I Can Camp” and “I Can Climb” events, which teach skills to newcomers to the outdoors. Participation in these and other interpretive programs totaled 285,620 in 2012, a 37 percent increase since 2008, the year before Legacy funding became available to the Parks and Trails Division.

In another example of a long-term investment, the DNR used Legacy money from the Parks and Trails Fund to update and enhance the River Inn, a state building at Jay Cooke State Park that is listed on the National Register and hadn’t been significantly remodeled since the 1970s. Originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1939 and 1942, the structure was built with local rock and white pine trees. Among other things, the building has been updated with new ADA-accessible restrooms with hot water, energy-efficient lighting and power-assisted exterior doors and new interpretive exhibits.

Minnesota’s forests and your access to them have been bolstered with Legacy funds. Legacy dollars were used to protect 190,000 acres of working forest land in Itasca, Aitkin, St. Louis, Cass, Beltrami, Koochiching and Clearwater counties called the Upper Mississippi Forest Legacy Project.

They were also used to protect another 20,000 acres through several smaller projects. By using Legacy funds to secure easements and acquisitions, existing public forests are connected to create several thousand square miles of contiguous, protected habitat for wolves, black bear, white-tailed deer, ruffed grouse, woodcock and countless numbers of other animals and plants. This investment keeps the lands open forever for outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing, hiking and snowmobiling.

The DNR is also making investments in clean water using the Legacy funding from the Clean Water Fund. During the next 10 years, restoration and protection strategies will be identified and implemented for 81 major watersheds through state and local partnerships. Along the Buffalo River, one of 10 major watersheds in the Red River Basin, the DNR helped find the most effective places to use Legacy money for managing water quality issues and flooding. Closer to the Twin Cities, the DNR is using Legacy money to develop a computer model that can be used to track water flow through the 70-square mile area of the Shakopee Creek headwaters watershed, which will help local implementers reduce the flow of pollutants that threaten the lakes, streams and wetlands in the region.

The agency is also using Legacy funds to map groundwater resources and monitor groundwater levels to ensure long-term sustainable groundwater use. Legacy funds are being used to create “county geologic atlases,” collections of maps and other in-

Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Jacob Johnson has been chosen as the December Student of the Month for grades 10-12.

He is the son of Wade and LaRae Johnson. Jacob is a junior.

MnDOT relies on parents to teach children about dangers of snowplows

Playing in the snow is a great winter activity for children, but the Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds parents to ensure children are safely away from the road while snowplow drivers are working.

“Playing near roads is never a safe choice, including during winter,” said Jamie Hukriede, MnDOT Maintenance Engineer. “Building snow forts near the street is dangerous, and snowplow operators will have difficulty seeing children if they are hidden behind a large pile of snow, or if they slip and fall on to the road in the path of an approaching vehicle.”

Snowplows can weigh as much as 20 times more than the average car and take longer than a car to stop. Snowplows have a large, 12-foot blade in the front and a wing blade on the side, which creates a large danger zone for anyone nearby.

“Snowplow drivers continue cleaning up for days after storms pass through, so children need to continue to be alert for plows,” said Hukriede. “Anyone who sees or hears a snowplow approaching should move well back from the road to

Daniel was so excited he just had to tell his parents, “I learned in Sunday school today all about the very first Christmas. There wasn’t a Santa Claus way back then, so these three guys on camels had to deliver all the toys. And Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer with his nose so bright wasn’t there yet, so they had to have this big light in the sky to find their way around.”

His school activities include playing football as a sophomore and junior and running track as a freshman. He plans on going out for the speech team this winter. He has participated in theatre and band since seventh grade. He was elected to be on Student Council this year and also joined the Healthy Communities Collaborative this fall.

He is on the Honor Roll and has lettered in theatre and band. He was also awarded Outstanding Performance for his role in one of the theatre productions.

Jacob is very active in helping out the Lion’s club in Swanville by cleaning ditches, and helping in a variety of ways with the Swanville Carnival and Prairie Fest.

“Impossible isn’t just a word, it’s an excuse. If you want to do something in your life, you’re the only one holding yourself back,” is his advice to fellow classmates.

DNR: Warning, ice is not strong enough for vehicles With recent reports of vehicles breaking through the ice from Douglas to Beltrami counties, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is cautioning everyone about driving on the ice.

“Ice is never 100 percent safe,” said Capt. Greg Salo, DNR enforcement manager. “Winter recreationists need to think twice before driving out on the ice because the ice in many places is still not strong enough to support vehicles.

“No fish is worth your life,” he added.

Last winter (November to April), six people died in Minnesota from breaking through the ice. All the deaths involved either a snowmobile or vehicle.

If a vehicle breaks through the ice, the owner is responsible for removal and must report it to the county sheriff.

If the vehicle is not removed within 30

days, the owner is subject to fines.

The DNR recommends anyone heading out on the ice should check with a local bait shop or resort - ask about ice conditions - and measure the ice.

The DNR clear ice thickness recommendations are: • 4 inches for walking.

• 5 inches for a snowmobile or ATV. • 8-12 inches for a car.

• 12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.

When the temperature rises above freezing for six of the last 24 hours, double the recommended minimum thickness. And remember, if it stays above freezing for 24 hours or more, stay off the ice - it is not safe.

Snow affects deer in many ways. Like the hair on a deer’s back, fluffy snow can also trap air and provide good insulation for any animal that beds down in a deep snow drift. Snow can also be a detriment to deer because it can make food more difficult to find. In winter, deer often shift from typical grazers feeding on grasses and herbaceous plants to browsers that feed on buds and rely on fat reserves gained during the summer. Deep snow can also make travel more difficult for deer, meaning that they may alter their movement patterns or try to find areas where food and cover from wind are nearby one another. This can cause deer to “herd up” in winter as they congregate near an available source of food or a windbreak.
