Putting the fun in fundraising -By Harvey Mackay A little girl asked to see the president of a large company. She explained that her club was raising money and asked if he would contribute.

Smiling, he laid a quarter and a dollar bill on his desk and said, “Take whichever one you want.”

The little girl said, “My mother taught me to take the smallest piece, but I’ll take this piece of paper to wrap it in so I won’t lose it.” Smart kid.

Fundraising is one of those necessary tasks that enable great causes and scare people silly, all at the same time.

Even when needs are great, asking for money is a daunting task. I’ve been involved in a variety of deserving organizations. The story is the same,

time after time. Volunteers eagerly fill the other committees, but the work can’t even get started until someone brings in the support.

That is why I see fundraising as a terrific opportunity.

First and foremost, the organization benefits because you have a chance to put your cause out in front of people who might be able to help, or know someone you can contact. It may take more than one appeal, so laying the groundwork is an important first step.

Second, you benefit because you can practice your sales skills in an environment that will open doors to people you might not otherwise have contact with. You learn to handle rejection gracefully, an essential skill that every successful salesperson must master. And as with any selling proposition, you get better as you practice your presentation.

While there’s no magic formula for attracting support, there are some guidelines that you should follow.

Your enthusiasm must be palpable and contagious. After you’ve made the same pitch dozens of times, you have to be careful not to get stale.

Make an appointment to personalize your request and present the project to its best advantage while respecting other people’s time and interests. Doing your homework about the people you meet with is essential.

Have printed material available, even if it’s a simple fact sheet.

Remember your manners. First, you say please. Then, regardless of the reply, you say thank you. Publicly acknowledge those who supported the project, whether in an annual report,

plaque or naming opportunity.

Whether you are raising a thousand dollars for a local school or millions for a new hospital wing, these rules apply.

Believe me, I’ve asked many people for large sums of money, and they are still my friends because I am respectful of their time and circumstances.

One of the most successful fundraising efforts I have been involved with is Celebrity Fight Night Foundation, which was established to promote ongoing efforts to eliminate sickness and poverty, supporting such institutions as the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center.

My friend Jimmy Walker founded this phenomenal organization more than 20 years ago, and with Executive Director Sean Currie has grown CFN from a one-night star-studded event in Phoenix, to now include a separate five-night gala in Italy.

I was privileged to join in the spectacular Italian event earlier this fall.

After performing at a Celebrity Fight Night in Phoenix, tenor Andrea Bocelli was inspired to gather a who’s who of international celebrities. One of the highlights for me was a limited seating concert in the Roman Colosseum featuring Bocelli, Elton John and Steven Tyler. Other megastars that performed during the week included Reba McEntire, Brooks and Dunn, David Foster, Smokey Robinson, Kristin Chenoweth, and the list goes on, all benefiting the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and Barrow Neurological Institute.

Together, these events have raised more than $142 million.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Christmas Tunes

Its again the time of year when many of us look forward to hearing some of the music which we heard and sang in past years. The sounds bring back memories of an earlier time when we were kids and were excited about the upcoming celebration and maybe a possibility of a gift that we just had to have. Looking back to the earliest memories, we didn’t question a very large man being able to travel the world on a sleigh distributing gifts to kids. We didn’t question the big guy entering and exiting through an 8 inch square chimney. But it was magic.

Today it is again socially acceptable to wish someone “Merry Christmas” without thinking that maybe someone will be offended by the greeting. Hopefully the greeting is the beginning of bringing back some of the joy and excitement from our earlier years. Recently it was reported that “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” was offensive because it was somehow racially unacceptable and that “Here Comes Santa Claus” was also racially unacceptable. One sometimes thinks that some individuals spend their entire lifetime trying to make everything we have as a basis for our lives is wrong.

We must not continue to base our lives on the religious, ethical or family values which formed our lives. Is this OK???

We must share the responsibility for some of these happenings. We are too busy to worry about how some individuals are slowly nibbling away what we are. We don’t take the time to express our dislike for some ideas which are totally against our actual being.

Lets look at the Christmas music we especially enjoy on some of our favorite radio stations and is the usual seasonal sound in shopping centers. The radio stations play Christmas music to hold the listeners to the station. The shopping centers use the music to create a feeling if Christmas and the desire to buy more merchandise. The music is usually the sounds that we remember from our early years. There seems to be a lack of new Christmas tunes.

We especially enjoy the music of Bing Crosby, Doris Day and Perry Como. Almost all of their songs are over 75 years old. For instance, Little Drummer Boy – early 1940’s, Sleigh Ride Song – middle 1940’s, Baby It’s Cold Outside and I’ll Be Home For Christmas – middle 1940’s, along with The 12 Days Of Christmas from 1909.

There are also much older favorites including Hark The Herald Angels Sing – 1739, Silent Night – 1818, First Noel – 1823 and Good King Wenceslas – 1853.

We aren’t adding really inspirational Christmas music anymore. Guess maybe Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is part of the new inspiration.

The war years created a feeling of unity, purpose and longing for loved ones, whether they were serving their country overseas, working in the factories in other states or being at home living with the concerns about the shortages created by the war or lost loved ones. These situations made us appreciate what we had and the music reflected “peace and goodwill to all.”

We still crave that comfortable feeling.

Granted, this is not your everyday fundraiser. Not every cause will generate this kind of attention, but all successful campaigns have one feature in common: excellent leadership.

So before you attach your name to an organization, check out the leadership and the board. If you find that you aren’t able to get behind the cause or the group, have no fear.

There’s always another group looking for your help!

John “Buddy” J. Urbashich Jr.

Obituaries James H. Schwanke

F u n e r a l Services were held Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Grey Eagle for James H. Schwanke, age 91, who passed away on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Rev. Michael Bitz officiated and burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Williams Dingmann Funeral Home – Stein Chapel, Long Prairie.

James Hartung Schwanke was born November 16, 1926 in Round Prairie, Minnesota, the son of George and Alvina (Hartung) Schwanke. He grew up and attended school in Grey Eagle. He married

Erna M. Kuehne on October 2, 1951 in Grey Eagle. They farmed near Grey Eagle until retiring.

Jim believed that wildlife conservation was an important part of farming. He believed that all landowners shared the responsibility to create and maintain beneficial habitat. He accomplished this by planting thousands of trees, providing food plots, and retiring marginal crop and pasture lands.

James was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served many years as an elder. He served on the Grey Eagle School Board and Todd County Zoning Board.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and spirited card games with his family.

James is survived by his children, Stephen (Judy) Schwanke, Sartell, MN, Christy Ploof, Brainerd, MN, and Timothy (Brenda) Schwanke, Grey Eagle; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Erna, his wife of 62 years, and sister Eleva Schwanke.

Pamela M. Ehrenberg Pamela M. Ehrenberg, 65 year old resident of Burtrum, MN passed away Thursday, December 14, 2017 at the Melrose Hospital in Melrose, MN. Funeral service was held Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church in Grey Eagle, MN with Rev. Gary Taylor officiating.

Burial was at the Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. Funeral Arrangements were with the Shelley Funeral Chapel.

Pamela was born on July 22, 1952 in Little Falls, MN to the late Estel and Mildred (Slimmer) Crain. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School with the Class of 1970.

Pam was united in marriage to Dale Ehrenberg on June 27, 1970 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN. She attended nurses training at Coon Rapids Nursing School

where she obtained her LPN license. Pam was employed as an LPN for Medtronic as an inspector for 15 years and later went to work for Fresenius Dialysis Center for many years retiring in 2006. After retiring in 2006 Pam and Dale relocated to Burtrum, MN where she was employed at the Coborn’s Grocery Store in Long Prairie, MN and served as the treasurer and sexton of Moses Dane Cemetery in Burtrum, MN. In her free time, she enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending time with her poodle dogs. Pam was a member of the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church and the Swanville Auxilliary. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of John “Buddy” J. Urbashich Jr., age 84 of Albany, was held Monday, December 18 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St Anthony.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

John was born on May 4, 1933 on the family farm in Krain Township to John Sr. and Theresa (Schmidt) Urbashich. John grew up on the family farm and attended school in St. Anthony. He married Mary Jane Job on August 23, 1958 in Freeport, MN. The couple made their home and worked on the family century farm in Krain

Thomas John Blais, the son of Anthony and Olga (Lawin) Blais, was born in Long Prairie, Minnesota on September 18, 1927. He attended school in Long Prairie, and he graduated with the class of 1945.

Tom worked for his father in the Chrysler/ Plymouth Dealership as a young boy. Tom served in the United States Navy after High School, and in the Army National Guard.

Tom was called to active duty in Alabama for 17 months during the Korean War. He attended the Minnesota School of Business graduating in business/sales. Tom married Roselyn (Schultz) on January 17, 1952, and they spent the first part of their married

He loved to travel, especially taking trips out west to cowboy country and to the mountains. Buddy enjoyed family time especially time with the grandchildren and was passionate about Massey tractors.

He took over the dealership after his father died in 1956, and he changed from selling Chrysler/Plymouth to selling Fords in 1957.

He also started a body shop on the West side of town in later years. Tom and Rose worked side by side in the business for many years until her death in 1991. He moved from Long Prairie to Little Birch Lake in 1996, and he retired in 1998. Tom moved to an assisted Living in Sauk Centre in 2016.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, golfing, dancing, boating, gardening, Vikings Fan, and he played in a whist card group for years. Tom was on the board for the Minnesota Auto Dealers’ Association, a Volunteer Fireman for 33 years, served on the City Council, American Legion Member, and he chaired the huge fireworks display for the American Legion every 4th of July. He was active in Commercial Club Meetings, and he faithfully supported Long Prairie businesses. Tom was a member of the American Lutheran Church of Long Prairie in previous years, and he was a current member of the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church where he was instrumental in the planning process for the new building.

He is survived by his daughter Leah (Peter) Klick of Maple Grove, MN, Son Tony Blais of Plymouth, MN. Three grandchildren Josh (Chrisy) Klick of Zimmerman, MN, Dan Klick of Big Lake, MN, Tom (Rachel) Klick of Minnetonka, MN. Seven greatgrandchildren Riley, Abbey, Natalie, Owen, Brent, Aaron, Nora. He is also survived by the family of his deceased friend Pat Denne, Joe, (Darla) Denne of Monticello, MN, Nikki, (Kevin) Gross of Maple Grove, MN, Moneque, (Dean) Downs of Elk River, MN, Melinda, (Nash) Alum of Maple Grove, MN and their families.

Dolores M. Bengtson F u n e r a l Services will be at 11 am, Friday, December 22, 2017 at American Lutheran Church, Long Prairie, Minnesota for Dolores M. Bengtson, age 90, who passed away Monday at the CentraCare Health Systems-Long Prairie. Rev. Bill Bakewicz will officiate and burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.

Dolores Muriel Nelson was born June 14, 1927 in Braham, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank Arthur & Nina Catherine (Peterson) Nelson. She grew up and attended school in Braham graduating in 1945. Dolores was confirmed at Siloa Lutheran Church in Braham. She worked as a secretary for the president of the Braham bank. She later moved to St. Paul where she was employed at Brown & Bigelow. Dolores was united

in marriage to Carl A. Bengtson on August 21, 1954 in Braham. Due to Carl’s job with the Government, they lived in Moorhead, Roseau, Baudette, Warren, and Pine City before settling in Long Prairie in 1964.

Dolores was a member of American Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid. She taught Sunday School for years and took part in Bible Studies with Carl as well.

She also enjoyed gardening and yard work.

Dolores also enjoyed camping with her family and traveling. She also was very interested in current events, politics, and reading biographies. One of the things she enjoyed most was cooking and entertaining family.

Dolores is survived by her children, Gary (Debra) Bengtson, Urbandale, IA, Janice Bengtson, Detroit Lakes, MN, Julie Bengtson, Long Prairie, MN, and Carol Bengtson, Minnetonka, MN; grandchildren, Luke Bengtson, Matt (Taryn) Bengtson, Josh Bengtson, Heidi (Saroj) Phuyal; and a sister, Shirley (Ted) Anderson, Plymouth, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, and sisters Marian Fruechte and Ardis Niemi.

Leona Loretta Schneider, 91 year old resident of Sobieski died Sunday, December 17 at her home with her loving family by her side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 29 at 10:30 A.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, MN with Father Jimmy Joseph officiating. The burial will be held in the parish cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 28 from 4:00-8:00 P.M. The Rosary will be said at 4:30 P.M. followed

by Parish Prayers at 7:00 P.M on Thursday evening at the funeral home at Emblom Brenny Funeral Service in Little Falls and from 9:30 until the hour of the service at the church on Friday in Flensburg.

Leona Warzecha was born October 26, 1926 in Royalton, MN to the late Philip and Frances (Pintok) Warzecha. She attended rural country school near Royalton as a young girl. At the age of 16 she moved to Minneapolis where she worked at an artillery company making ammunition to assist with the war efforts. Leona returned to Morrison County when she met her future husband, Alphonse at a dance near her home. Leona was united in marriage to Alphonse “Joker” Schneider on May 15, 1946. The couple made their home in Swan River Township, Morrison County, Minnesota for 59 years.

She worked as a certified nursing assistant for 31 years at Little Falls Care Center, formerly known as Lutheran Senior Citizens Home. The couple moved to Sobieski, MN in October of 2005. On July 12, 2006, Alphonse died and Leona continued living in Sobieski,

MN. Leona was a member of the Rosary Sodality, St. Anne’s Missions, funeral lunch program Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski. She enjoyed quilting, canning, baking especially her poppy seed coffee cakes, gardening, reading, picking berries, making homemade jams, 6-5-4 dice game, 500 Rummy card game and was known to hold her aces during that card game.

No Room For Scoffers -By Sheila Ripplinger The beautiful stage of the Christmas story that we are so familiar with has a wide variety of characters ranging from the wealthy Magi to the lowly shepherds~ the glorious Angels, a bright star, and sheep. It is wonderful to be reminded of these parts of the skit to give us a greater appreciation of what the true Christmas is all about. Somehow the materialism and greed has overshadowed what was meant to be a celebration of the birth of our Savior!

One astonishing thought that recently stood out to me after being a visitor at one of these particular children’s Christmas skits, was that there were no mockers or scoffers anywhere within the whole beautiful scene! Yes, there were troubles along the way such as not being able to find a decent place to stay being so close to giving birth to a child. And there were obviously the unpleasant crowds of people present due to the census taking place, and we can make assumptions and fill in the blanks on such things as the sore and swollen feet and smelly stable that they ended up in that night. However, when I went over the story in the Gospels, the marvelous birth of Christ, starting with Mary’s miraculous conception all the way through- is preserved with serene, and marvelous grace and beauty.

I presume that I noticed this now because lately I have been so saddened by the amount of mocking and scoffing that I am witnessing even among those who claim Christianity. It is not a surprise coming from those who blatantly deny Christ, but for those who put themselves in the Christian category, yet deny Him in most areas of how they live and how they speak so critically and hatefully~ do they not realize that they are indeed taking the Name of the Lord in vain by claiming to follow Him yet denying Him in their words and actions? Of course the Bible does say that this will happen, so we should not be too surprised. Yet, it saddens my heart for them because these modern day scoffers

and mockers do not even realize that they are the ones mentioned and warned about in the Sacred Scriptures. ‘In the last days they will follow their own evil desires and make fun of the promised return of the Lord.’ 2 Peter 3:3&4. They will even have a form of godliness- probably still going to a church for the duty and nostalgia of it, yet there is no power within them from the Holy Spirit because they have denied and ignored the Truth that could set them free. This freedom entails far more than simply ‘going to a church.’ It is not about a denomination title or affiliation. It is not even about not sinning any more but about being covered in Amazing Grace and being convicted by the Lord when we are sinning or in the wrong... a blessing and a gift that flows from that Grace.

God our Creator set the stage for all of the behind the scene events that took place surrounding the birth of Christ including His whole time that He walked among us in human form and was led to the cross to show us the horrendous state of sinfulness we were in. We could never have paid that sin debt without Jesus! We cannot get to this Holy God without truly knowing this truth and knowing by Faith the whole of what and why Jesus came to us this way. Yes, there are plenty of mockers and scoffers and bad guys that are listed throughout the Holy pages of the Bible outside of the Christmas Story; they had a purpose back then and they have a purpose even today. The story is not over.

Burglary northwest of Upsala

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 12-19-2017 they received a report of a burglary with three trailers, construction tools and a skid steer being stolen. The incident occurred at a property northwest of Upsala, MN sometime between October 24th and December 19th, 2017.

It is believed the suspect(s) gained entry to a shed on the property by breaking a window. Pictured are the trailers and skid steer that were stolen.

Enough to make their parents nervous!

Seriously, I think it depends on two things. First, are you two debt-free, or at least able to provide gifts without going into debt or hurting yourselves financially? There’s nothing wrong with spoiling the grandbabies once in a while.

But don’t use Christmas as an excuse to lose your minds, blow your budget, or go into debt every December. The amount you spend on gifts? I would suggest making it reasonable, not over the top, and relative to your income and that of the household in which the kiddos live.

The second thing I wonder about is the ages of all the grandchildren. I can’t imagine a four-year-old getting excited over a gift card. So, if that’s the general age range we’re talking about, have some fun with it! Head down to the store, and really put some thought into these decisions. On the other hand, it might be just the thing for a teenager — especially if you know where they like to shop and hang out. Older kids want to make their own decisions, so depending on the personality of the grandchild, a gift card might be the way to go.

But if your grandkids are still little, please don’t give them gift cards. No, grandma. No!

Dear Dave, What is the proper etiquette after the job interview process? I recently had an interview for a sales management position. I’ve sent a couple of follow-up emails in the last few weeks, and I know I’m still under consideration, but I’m not sure what to do now.

-Krista Dear Krista Next time, since you obviously have a sales background, how about treating it like a sales call? If you’re on a sales call, and the customer needs to perform some due diligence before deciding, a smart salesperson will ask to schedule a follow-up. Ask if checking back on a certain day in the next week or two will work. You don’t want to be obnoxious, but you want an appointment of sorts — a time frame — so you’ll know when to follow up without being pushy.

In this situation, I would recommend sending another email. You want to walk right up to that fine line that separates bold from obnoxious, because that’s one of the things a good sales manager should be able to do. Respectfully tell them you understand the decisionmaking process takes time, but you need to know when you can expect an answer.

Use the idea that you’re a great sales person, and you’re treating this as a professional sales call. And don’t be afraid to have a little fun with it. If you’re still under consideration, that means they like you. You could even hint at the fact they don’t want to hire a sales manager who doesn’t know how to follow up!

Grey Eagle City October 10, 2017 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Joe Arnzen at 7:00 p.m., on the 10th day of October 2017 in council chambers.

Council members present were Roland Ahrendt, Thom Muellner, Bill Pohlmann and Brian Hollenkamp.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Chico Hellmann, Lori Hellmann and guests Larry VanHout and Duane Towle.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve the minutes of the September 12, 2017 meeting as written. A second was made by Brian Hollenkamp and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Duane Towle was in attendance requesting approval to connect to city water for his home just outside city limits. The estimate for Ferguson Brothers Excavating to install the curb stop is $3,350 which would be the cost of the connection fee for Duane’s property. The DNR had no issues with a water line being bored from the curb stop to the home. The neighbor provided a written statement allowing an easement for Duane for the curb stop and the maintenance of his water line. Water shut off would be required before and after the meter. The City would provide the meter and remote as part of the connection to the city water supply.

The City would need to apply for a permit from MnDOT for work that will take place in the road right-ofway.

A motion was made by Bill Pohlmann to approve the Duane Towle’s request to connect his home outside of city limits with the cost of connection fee to be $3,350.

A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Larry VanHout from Widseth Smith Nolting was in attendance to discuss information provided

by Rural Development for the proposed sewer rehabilitation project.

The city competed nationally for a pool of money that was available for projects such as ours. Rural

Development approved the preliminary engineering report with some changes, which had a total project cost of $4,294,700.00. On September 26, 2017 Jeff Scholten from Rural Development met with Mayor Joe Arnzen, Clerk Lori Hellmann and City Engineer Bryan Bye. The purpose of the meeting was to report that the City would receive a $2,800,000.00 grant from Rural Development but the funds had to be obligated before October 1st.

It was at that time that Mayor Joe Arnzen signed the necessary documents to obligate the funds. This does not obligate the city to move forward with the project. The city would then be responsible for a loan for the project for $1,125,000.00, which would be paid for over a 40 year period through user fees of approximately $40 per month per service. In order to move forward, the city would need to approve an agreement for engineering services with Widseth Smith Nolting. Larry explained the agreement to the council regarding the services they would provide and the costs associated with those services.

A motion was made by Roland Ahrendt to approve engineering agreement with Widseth Smith Nolting for the proposed sewer rehabilitation project. A second was made by Thom Muellner and upon roll call vote the members voted as follows: Roland Ahrendt – aye, Thom Muellner – aye, Brian Hollenkamp – aye, Bill Pohlmann – aye, Joe Arnzen – aye, motion carried.

A motion was made by Brian Hollenkamp to move forward with the sewer rehabilitation project with total project costs of $4,294,700.00 with $2,800,000.00 being a grant from Rural Development and to-

tal loan amount of approximately $1,125,000.00. A second was made

by Bill Pohlmann and upon roll call vote, the members voted as follows: Roland Ahrendt – aye, Thom Muellner – aye, Brian Hollenkamp – aye, Bill Pohlmann – aye, Joe Arnzen – aye, motion carried.

Larry VanHout provided a copy of a sump pump inspection program for council review. There are many homes that currently have sump pumps piped into the sanitary sewer system which only adds to the current infiltration issues of an already aged system. The city has an ordinance which makes it illegal to have sump pumps being pumped into the sanitary sewer system. A sump pump inspection could be done in conjunction with the sewer rehabilitation project. Sump pumps should be plumbed so that the water would be pumped outside. The council will review the sump pump inspection program.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed: 1. The curb stop at the park can’t be dug up and repaired until it dries out.

2. The MPCA permit for the sanitary sewer system will not allow pumping of the ponds in any other manner than what is currently being done, nor can the permit be modified.

3. Locates have been received for the installation of the curb stop for Duane Towle.

The Fire Department would like to change out the sink in the Fire Department meeting room.

The council will consider once a plan on what is to be installed is presented to the council. Cost of the installation of the sink will be at no cost to the city.

Burnhamville Township November 28, 2017 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville Township was held November 28, 2017 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Mike Berscheit and Bruce Johnson; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener.

Sup. Louis Thompson was absent.

The board has received all the signed “Release of Damages” forms from land owners along Forest Lane and, as stated at the September hearing, the supervisors were satisfied with the road. Sup. Johnson made a motion to approve resolution #2017-01 to accept the platted road “Forest Lane” for maintenance by the township. The town will plow the road as deemed necessary by the townboard and grade the road approximately once a month or as deemed necessary by the supervisors. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. The contractor removed a lot of trees on 210th Street and added gravel in the road improvement project. Board will evaluate road in spring again.

The board looked into changing the fire service areas and found out the county and maybe the state would have to agree to the changes as the county computer system would have to be modified for any changes. As the land owner did not supply any more information, the fire service areas will stay the same. Also, from the Grey Eagle fire meeting was a notice of unpaid fire call that the board will pay and put on the owners taxes. The department requested that townships try to trim more trees on township roads.

Now is the time to talk to kids about the dangers of thin ice. As temperatures continue to dip below freezing, ice is forming on many lakes, ponds and rivers. But conditions vary across the state.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Hannah Mishler has already responded to multiple ice rescue calls.

“Ice, especially snow covered ice, is extremely deceptive. You can’t see dangerous cracks or the thickness of the ice under the snow,” Mishler said.

With many children out of school for holiday breaks, they may look toward the newly formed ice for entertainment.

“Teach your children that ice is never 100 percent safe,” cautions Mishler. “If your child is near the ice, you should be near your child.”

While adults and children are recreating outdoors, they should always take precautions around any body of water during the cold water season.

Lisa Dugan, DNR recreation safety outreach coordinator, advises in addition to checking conditions locally and being prepared with an ice safety kit, anyone recreating on ice should be wearing a life jacket. “A life jacket is the one piece of equipment that increases your odds of not drowning from cold water shock, hypothermia or exhaustion should you fall through the ice.”

Ice safety guidelines No ice can ever be considered “safe ice,” but following these guidelines can help minimize the risk: • Always wear a life jacket on the ice (except when in a vehicle).

• When a child is near the ice, an adult should be near the child.

• Caution children to stay off ponds, streams, and other bodies of water.

• A thin coating of ice on a pond or

lake does not mean it is safe.

The minimum ice thickness guidelines for new, clear ice are: • 4 inches for ice fishing or other activities on foot.

• 5-7 inches for a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle.

• 8-12 inches for a car or small pickup.

• 12-15 inches for a medium truck.

Double these minimums for white or ice covered with heavy snow.

Morrison County Sheriff’s Office

December 18, 2017: The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office, once again wants to inform residents of a new scam that is being reported. According to Sheriff Shawn Larsen, the most recent cases are targeting small businesses in the county.

According to recent complaints, a male party with a foreign accent will call businesses from the phone number 410384-8272. He will ask for prices to purchase large amounts of product and ask if they take credit card payments over the phone. If so, the businesses ship out the product after the payment goes through later to find out that the credit card number was stolen. The business is then out the money and the product.

Sheriff Larsen reminds local businesses to use caution and if you do business over the phone, make sure the transaction is legitimate. In these particular cases, the business owner looked into the request and discovered that the phone number listed was used in multiple reported scams.

December 14, 2017: At 07:22 Lisa Newhouse, 28, of rural Burtrum hit a deer with her 2009 Kia mini van on county road 2 east of Grey Eagle, the van had damage to the front driver side. Newhouse was not injured int he accident.

December 15, 2017: At 22:13 a report of a one vehicle crash on County Road 100 near Long Lake Public Access. Mitchell Tesch age 19 of Long Prairie was traveling eastbound on County Road 100 in his 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix when he lost control of the vehicle in snowy conditions going off road causing damage to his vehicle sustaining minor injuries in the crash. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the incident.

December 19, 2017: At 15:58 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens that ice conditions remain unpredictable on lakes throughout Todd County. There may be several inches in one area and only one or two inches just a short distance away.

Areas of open water have also been reported on many Todd County lakes, including the east side of Horseshoe Lake. Citizens are urged to take appropriate safety measures, including checking the ice at regular intervals, and having safety equipment.
