Remembering a legend, Zig Ziglar

When I was cutting my teeth in the sales game right after college, I made sure to read or listen to everything I could get my hands on from a handful of sales and motivational legends - Napoleon Hill, Earl Nightingale, Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale, Jim Rohn and Zig Ziglar.

I, like many people around the world, was saddened to hear about the recent death of my friend Zig. He was one of a kind. I was fortunate to share the stage with him several times - and I will be forever grateful for those opportunities.

His inimitable style was contagious.

If you were lucky enough to have heard him speak, you understand how he stayed at the top of his game for more than 40 years. As he was fond of saying, “People often say motivation doesn’t last. Neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.”

Zig was simply one of the greatest motivators and sales trainers of all time.

tremely positive attitude. Who can forget his classic line, “I’m so optimistic I’d go after Moby Dick in a rowboat and take the tartar sauce with me.”

He espoused the theory that everyone can develop an enthusiasm for life.

He told a story about a woman who was the top salesperson in her company of 1,200 salespeople. She broke every single record in the industry. Zig asked her, “How did you do it?” She said, “God didn’t make me with an off-switch.”

Another big subject for Zig was balancing work and family, which was so important to him. One of his pearls of wisdom on this subject: “Many marriages would be better if the husband and wife clearly understood that they are on the same side.”

We were both active in the National Speakers Association and members of its Hall of Fame. We shared a similar speaking philosophy. Both of us realized that in order to educate, you need to entertain. Make your audience laugh every five to 10 minutes. Introduce a new lesson, concept or idea to your audience every few minutes as well to keep their attention.

Zig was genuinely friendly to everyone. After every speech, he hung around and answered any and all questions until the lights went out. Motivational speakers come and go, but his work will live on because he practiced what he preached.

Zig also loved comic strips and sports, especially the amazing feats of teams. He also collected anecdotes because he knew stories can be great teachers.

Obituaries Loren Henry Bergmann

Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Loren Henry Bergmann, age 79 of Albany will be 11 AM Saturday, December 22nd at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa. Father Roger Klassen OSB will officiate, and burial will take place in the parish cemetery following the service.

Loren died peacefully in his sleep Sunday evening at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

There will be a visitation for Loren from 4-8 PM, Friday, December 21st at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home in Albany, and again from 10 AM until the time of the service Saturday morning at the church in St. Rosa. Parish prayers will take place at 5 PM at the funeral home Friday evening.

Loren was born on March 17th, 1933 to John and Hilda (Bruns) Bergmann on the family farm in St. Rosa. He married Marcella “Sally” Blommel on May 12, 1954 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. After marriage the couple

Marie C. Schoenberg Marie C. Schoenberg, age 86 of Melrose, died peacefully on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Pine Haven Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 20 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 to 10:30 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Marie Christine Olmscheid was born May 8, 1926 in St. Martin, Minnesota to John and Frances (Hemmesch) Olmscheid.

She was united in marriage to Gilbert Schoenberg on September 3, 1946 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin.

The couple farmed near the Spring Hill area. They retired in 1987 and moved to Melrose. She enjoyed playing cards, baking and bowling.

Marie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the

moved to Minneapolis where they lived for twenty plus years before moving back to the Birch Lake area, and eventually retiring to Albany. Loren worked his life as a machinist where he owned and operated Bergmann Machine Works and U.S. Machine. He was a member of the Lions Club, he was a past President of the Steel Workers Union at ThermoKing, a member of St. Joseph’s Society, and a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Loren is survived by his loving wife Sally Bergmann, Albany; his children John (Jayne) Bergmann, Bradenton, FL; Cindy (Jack) Sandberg, Hutchinson; Judy (John) Schulte, Eden Prairie; Gregg Bergmann, Albany; Jason (Lindsay) Bergmann, Bowlus; Lisa (Eric) Roling, Brooklyn Park; his sixteen grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; and his siblings David Bergmann, Melrose; Duane Bergmann, Grand Rapids; Laverne (Edwin) Duclos, Big Birch Lake; Joan Haws, Little Birch Lake; Kenny (Marilyn) Bergmann, Big Birch Lake; Audrey Westbrook, Savage; and Janet Gibbons, St. Anna.

He is preceded in death by his parents John and Hilda Bergmann, his siblings Irene Lee, Melvin Bergmann, Ellen Lambrecht, Darlene Schiffler, Eugene “Gene” Bergmann, and infant sister Norma Bergmann.

Survivors include her children, Roger (Joyce) Schoenberg of Greenwald, Marilyn (David) Welle of Greenwald, Margie (Kevin) Mohr of Paynesville, James “Gib” (Sharon) Schoenberg of Spring Hill, Mark Schoenberg of Spring Hill, Irene (John) Hafner of San Diego, CA and Randy (Cindi) Schoenberg of Spring Hill; 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; sisters, Catherine (Joe) Primus of Melrose and Anna Backes of St. Cloud.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gilbert Schoenberg on March 2, 1992; infant sons, Joseph and Michael Schoenberg; daughter-in-law, Lisa Schoenberg; two grandchildren; brothers, Nick Olmscheid and Gilbert Olmscheid; sisters, Elizabeth Schlangen, Theresa Schaefer and Alverna Enneking.

Serving as casket bearers will be Doug Welle, Brandon Wensmann, Michael Schoenberg, Brooke Lieser, Shawn Schoenberg and Eric Schoenberg. Cross bearer will be Austin Schoenberg and scripture bearer will be Kari Diederich.

Promise Fulfilled, Jeremiah 33:14 On November 2nd when this message was presented it was the first Sunday of Advent which begins a preparatory time for Christmas. However in our day and age Black Friday has become the start of the Christmas season. Whether you believe it or not some people already have their Christmas shopping done before this first Sunday in Advent. Each year around this time we make all kinds of preparations in anticipation of Christmas.

We make all these preparations because Christmas is so special -- but what makes it special? Some might say it is the time we get with our families and friends, or the spirit of giving and the joy that is so prevalent. Others may insist that it is all the lights, decorations, cookies and the eggnog. For me Christmas is so special because of something else.

Image what the “holidays” would be like if people didn’t keep their promises.

You might arrive at a family member’s house expecting a nice dinner and time with family only to find that no dinner has been prepared and they are away for the weekend. Or you plan a party and everyone who said they were coming doesn’t

come. Or what happens when little Johnny is promised a certain gift and once the gifts under the tree are all opened the promise made to him was not fulfilled?

Throughout the Old Testament Scripture God made a promise to Adam and Eve, Noah and his family, Abraham and Sarah, and all of the people of Israel that he would send a Savior to save them from their sin. In Jeremiah 33:14 God tells His people that He will fulfill the promise He has made to them with these words, “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah.”

Sometimes we go to some extreme measures to make sure that Christmas is special. We might buy more gifts or go to more parties or sing more songs but does that make Christmas MORE special?

Maybe you haven’t gotten caught up in the presents and lights but maybe for you it’s a tastier meal or more delicious cookie or even more quality time with your family.

The reality is that Christmas is special because of a promise fulfilled. God’s promise of a Savior to save us from our sins was fulfilled on the first Christmas day. God himself tells us through Jeremiah that He will fulfill His promise and He did.

This Christmas I will remind all of God’s people that God has fulfilled His promise He made to you in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Undoing Christmas Whittling

By Saralee Perel When my husband, Bob, and I were hanging out with our friends, Kerry and Rick, we longingly reminisced about the many years we walked our dogs around a pond nearby called Eagle Pond.

Then it dawned on me that we were all being insane. I’ll explain later.

“Were you the secret Santa of the pond?” Kerry asked Bob, referring to over 20 years of Christmases when someone would place bags of biscuits, decorated with ribbons, for all the “good dogs” on Santa’s list.

Bob, too shy to acknowledge he was the jolly fellow, shuffled his feet while I gladly boasted, “Yes! Yes!” We all stopped going to Eagle Pond.

We lost our beautiful dog, Gracie. And Kerry and Rick lost their wonderful dogs, Onyx and Owen. The memories made it way too sad to continue to walk those glorious trails.

While seeing the joy on our faces as we remembered the magical paths, I realized, “If we stop going to places that remind us of our loved ones, then we’ll

eventually be shutting out one wonderful part of our lives after another. What the heck is the point of that?”

Bob and I no longer eat fried clams in the small New England town of Ipswich. He grew up in that area. With his family now gone, it’s been too somber to enjoy those fried morsels dunked in the ambrosia of lemon juice and tarter sauce, while we’d sit overlooking the exquisite marshes. I ask you: “Are we out of our minds to have stopped doing that?” Well, of course!

If I keep closing doors because I allow sad memories to overtake the goodness of the times, I’ll be continuously whittling my life away.

On our ride back from Kerry and Rick’s house, Bob tearfully said, “I can’t go back to Eagle Pond because I’d feel like Gracie was right there. I’d see her looking back at me over her shoulder hoping I’ll give her the ‘It’s OK!’ sign to keep prancing through the woods.”

“Sweets. Would that be a bad thing?”

He thought for a long time. Then he cried the happy tears of freedom that come along with finally allowing Gracie’s or any loved one’s being to be a welcomed constant presence in life – forever. And then he laughed – loud and strong.

He began to allow himself to relive memories rather than to block them the second they entered his mind.

“I remember the year another mysterious stranger put out a decorated Christmas bag filled with dog treats,” he said. “And this particular bag was right from Gracie!”

“Well, I remember that you, I mean Santa used to always say, ‘They may be naughty; they may be nice, but they are all good dogs.’ Those were great times, Bob.” We both nodded, not only in agreement, but because we shared the spark of knowing that what has been missing for so very long, no longer needs to be gone.

Hmmm. I wonder if, on this Christmas Eve, a certain Santa will once again quietly tiptoe through the woods when nobody will see him hanging his holiday

Pelzer Tops 2000 in Upsala Girls’ Win over St. John’s Prep

By Bill Abeler When a pony-tailed seventh grader named Aimee Pelzer stepped onto the court to replace an injured varsity teammate on January 15, 2007, no one could have guessed the journey ahead.

One-hundred-forty-eighty games and thousands of practice hours later, that journey passed the 2000-point milepost last Friday night in Upsala’s 7544 victory at St. John’s Prep School’s historic Guild Hall. Pelzer finished the game with a game-high 29 points as Tracy Herzog and Alissa Zehrer added 16 and 14 respectively.

The senior guard’s fifteen-foot jumper late in the first half also made Pelzer the first player in Upsala High School basketball history, girls or boys, to reach the 2000-point threshhold.

To celebrate the moment officials stopped play as Pelzer’s teammates presented her with a game ball and fans from both sides of the court gave her an extended standing ovation.

“I’ve had an amazing time playing basketball with all my teammates,” Pelzer said. “I love being a Cardinal and I feel it’s a privilege to wear the red and white.”

The Ultimate Christmas Gift

By Sheila Ripplinger Christmas is a time of giving gifts to those whom we love and care about. We wait in eager anticipation for that special person to open that special gift! It is even more exciting when you know that you are giving a gift that they really need or want.

More than 2000 years ago, the world was given a Gift from a Holy God. A Gift that He knew we needed. This was the Ultimate Gift because it would save our souls from eternal condemnation.

God created each human soul as our first gift to us you might say - the gift of life. Even if we choose to deny the Truth in Scripture, our life still remains a gift from God, our Creator... fact.

The problem however, is that sin is in the world, and it is in us and sin separates us from God. The only way to atone for our sin is with blood. The Old Testament teaches the rituals of ‘sin cleansing’ by the killing of pure animals, such as a lamb, and having the High Priest be the mediator as he used the blood to purify the people from their sins. This had to be done over and over again. The Lord says, “The life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to make atonement for yourselves on the alter; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.” (Leviticus 17:11) Since Jesus was given to us as the Perfect Lamb, there are no other ways to be cleansed from our sin. No person, from present or past can bridge the gap between us and a Holy God. “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men; Jesus Christ.” (1 Timothy 2:5) This is why Christmas is such a big deal! Our Gift from God was a pure, perfect Lamb, born to a humble virgin, born in a stable where a lamb would typically be born. John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, Jesus, that whoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life.”

When our human, physical life is over, our created soul will still live on- remem-

ber, it was a gift to us from God. What we do with the gift of our physical and spiritual life is individually up to each one of us. We will each stand alone one day before a Holy and Just God. If we have denied His Gift of Jesus as an unwanted gift, we will remain separated from God and we will be justly sent to pay our own penalty in a place of eternal torment- which is not an everlasting party place as some may hope.

If we have accepted His Ultimate Gift, the Lamb of God, our soul will be cleansed and will be a light in this dark world, and we will look forward to spending eternity in that Beautiful Land that the Bible calls Heaven! Hallelujah!

The St. Olaf Christmas Festival is one of the oldest musical celebrations of Christmas in the United States. Started in 1912 by F. Last week’s horrific school shooting in Connecticut left our nation stunned and deeply saddened once again.

Our hearts and prayers are with those directly involved. To lose a child, so young and innocent, must surely bring grief beyond belief to a parent.

So many questions need answers.

Why would anyone do such a thing? Why are these incidents taking place so often in this country? Would stiffer gun control laws stop this kind of calamity from happening? Can people with serious mental problems be identified and given the help they need? And does intense media cov-

erage actually encourage “copycat” mass killings?

I don’t have the answers to those questions, but I do have opinions. In recent weeks, we have had the killing of a policeman in Cold Spring, the shopping mall shooting in Oregon, and now this awful school shooting. There are calls for tougher gun control laws, but will that really make any difference? Law-abiding people will follow gun control laws, but that’s not the kind of person committing these acts. One thing that does bother me though, and that’s picking up a Christmas gift catalogue and seeing what appears to be semi-automatic assault weapons advertised for sale.

Does media coverage make any difference in this country? That’s a hard one to answer, but think back to Columbine.

petrators’ entire lives are thoroughly analyzed in the national media. Then someone ranks these awful incidents based on the number of lives taken. It isn’t too much of a stretch to imagine some troubled person planning to out-do another and going out in a blaze of gunfire.

There’s another thing that’s bothered me for a long while, and that is the constant bombardment of sex and violence our young people are exposed to in video games, on television and in movies. Video games especially, are so realistic, and kids seem to be infatuated with them. They commit acts of violence in these games, but there are no consequences, except that they win or lose the game. There is no pain, no suffering; just move on to the next game. Could any of these senseless acts of

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City December 11, 2012 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 11th day of December, 2012 in Council chambers.

Council members present were Dennis Barrett, Andrea Kraska and Joe Arnzen. Council member Thom

The following water/wastewater items were discussed: 1.Completed the pond discharge in November, and did not need to treat with alum.

2.The chlorinator in the water plant is not working properly and will need to be repaired.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to purchase a new PH/DO meter for testing at the ponds. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Andy informed the council that he completed his first snowplowing of the season and everything went well.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve Resolution No. 2012-19, A Resolution Adopting Final Levy. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried. The resolution reads as follows: Resolution No. 2012-19: Resolution Adopting Final Levy; Payable in 2013.

Therefore, Be It Resolved, that the following proposed budget for 2013 was approved and adopted by the Grey Eagle City Council on this 11th day of December, 2012.

A test cut was done on the roof of the old city hall to determine what was there. It was found that there are two roofs and that there is buffalo board between them. It was suggested that it would be best to wait until spring to replace the roof.

It was the consensus of the council to wait until spring and obtain new bids from Buttweiler-Do-All and Herzog Roofing.

The council discussed the estimate from Darryl Rekowski to trim up the nine Chinese Elm Trees behind the Fire Hall. It was the consensus of the Council to leave the trees as they are and will consider removing the trees should they become an issue.

There were no building permit applications for council consideration.

There was no yard clean up issues for council consideration.

However, the council would like to invite the new owner of the school property to the January meeting.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to submit a pay request to the Grey Eagle Burtrum Lions Club in the amount of $3,500 for upkeep of the ten acre park property. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and roll call vote was taken. The roll call vote is as follows: Joe Arnzen - aye, Andrea Kraska - aye, Dennis Barrett - aye, Jim Gohman - aye. Motion carried.

A motion was made by Joe Arnzen to approve Herdering Inc. request to store a Michigan loader in the equipment storage shed at the cost of $100 per month to cover the cost of power and storage, with stipulations. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve $1/hr wage increase for Andy effective January 1, 2013 after completion of the six month probationary period. A second was made by Joe Arnzen and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The annual Fire Board meeting was held on November 20, 2012 with representatives from Burtrum City, Burhamville Township, Birchdale Township, Grey Eagle Township and Round Prairie Township in attendance. The 800 MZ radio system is up and running and the pagers are now narrow banded.

A dish was installed on top of the water tower as part of the 800 MZ system. There was no change in the Fire budget for 2013 and each entity saw their portion of the fire budget either stay the same or noticed a small decrease.

The Mayor thanked Council member Joe Arnzen for his many years of service on the City Council and for all the service he has provided to the City.

A motion was made by Andrea Kraska to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $112 from the Sewer Fund to the Sewer Rehab Fund, $768.36 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund, $71.15 from the General Fund ($16.15 to the Water Fund and $55

to the Sewer Fund) for Fire Hall and Library utilities, and $12,392.24 from the Central Minnesota Credit Union checking account to the First State Bank of Swanville checking account for ACH payment of utility bills. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A Gift of Giving -By B.J. Cassady Looking forward to Christmas 1995, to me, described a paradox. How can one enjoy Christmas when their loving spouse recently passed away from cancer, and yet Christmas is a time for celebration...

I had a friend, recently divorced, who was going through his first Christmas without his children that he loved so dearly. I called my friend and invited him over to my house for Christmas.

He didn’t seem overly thrilled, but had nothing else to do. I did the same for another divorced person who had a day without family or friends. I told them to dress nice but withheld my plans from them.

The three of us, at my house, made Christmas canes from pipe cleaners, and after an hour I told my friends to get in my van, as I had a surprise for them.

So off we went.

First stop, a nursing home, left few dry eyes. We visited the ones who had no company, prayed with them and left them little Christmas canes and some

candy. One lady, feeling really bad, asked us to pray for her. So we prayed with our hands on her body, and we felt a Power hard to describe.

Second stop, Presbyterian hospital... cancer wing. First you need to understand how hospitals work with the sick.

If possible, patients are sent home for the holidays. The ones remaining in the hospital live too far, are too ill, or have no support from family or friends. About half of the cancer wing was deserted.

We visited the staff and gave them candy and our little Christmas canes, then we visited the dying and ill. How can one describe being humbled? The patients asked for our prayers. We visited with every patient in the wing. We left the patients with a smile. When we left the hospital, we had nothing else left to give, but we received much. Our emotions were drained, we were exhausted, in tears but felt elevated to a ‘high’ impossible to describe. We all thought “But for the grace of God’...

Giving continued from page 10

“Mommy,” asked a small child, “how long did Baby Jesus stay in the manger?”

Puzzled, the mother answered. “Not too long, I would imagine.”

Unfortunately, there are far too many individuals who leave Jesus in the stable, seeing His birth as an end, not the beginning. Not everyone realizes that this day is the day that the journey to the cross actually began on earth. This One who was born on this day of days is often left wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. It seems that many have no understanding of the spiritual significance or importance of Christmas.

But for those of us who accept and acknowledge Christ as our Savior, we rejoice and say with the Apostle Paul, “Thank God for His Son - a gift too wonderful to describe!”

This Gift is the gift of God Himself: His only begotten Son. It is the source of His grace, the expression of His mercy, the revelation of His plan, the meaning of His purpose, the passion of His love, the assurance of His presence and the provision for our salvation. He knew what we needed then and what we need now. In Him we have faith to fight our fears and hope for a life in His presence. “Too wonderful” indeed.
