What’s one of the hardest tasks in business today?

It’s not starting a business. It’s not raising money.

It’s not even making a profit.

According to The Wall Street Journal, it’s firing an employee.

If someone doesn’t fit into an organization, they hurt both themselves and the organization. If you put on a shoe that didn’t fit, would you still wear it? Obviously the answer is no, but when people don’t fit into an organization, it’s often easier to pretend the problem doesn’t exist.

However, pretending won’t make the problem go away. You either deal with the problem now or you wait for the problem to get worse much later. Which do you think is the smarter solution?

The best way to avoid firing someone is to hire the right person in the first place. From the beginning,

work and coach each new employee so you and that person know how they can reach their goals, dreams, hopes and vision by working at your company.

When people understand how they can benefit by helping the company benefit, everyone wins. Unfortunately, sometimes we do hire the wrong person and sometimes the right person changes goals so they no longer fit in the company.

Firing may seem like an extreme action – and it can be. If an employee is chronically late, does sloppy work, is dishonest, refuses to be a team player, or demonstrates general contempt or disregard for the job or company, it’s time to cut ties.

Sometimes, however, the person just doesn’t work out. And despite efforts to remedy the situation, firing becomes the best option.

But firing should always create a better situation for both parties.

First, look to see if there is a position that would be a better fit within the current organization. If that’s not possible, then help that person find a position elsewhere. The goal is to satisfy and improve both your company and the fired employee. When you can make the fired employee see greater opportunities, you’ll realize that firing doesn’t have to be painful for anyone.

In fact, firing can be the best thing you can do for your organization and for your employees. Think of firing as a way for everyone to move on to a better future. And who doesn’t want a brighter future for themselves?

James Whitaker, the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest, said: “You don’t really conquer such a mountain. You conquer yourself.”

Whitaker was a relentless trainer.

He tried to anticipate every challenge, emotional and physical. Obstacles came at him right and left: avalanches, dehydration, hypothermia, oxygen shortage at 29,000 feet and the fatigue it caused. “You overcome the sickness and everything else – your pain, aches, fears – to reach the summit.”

To reach your destination, achievers like Whitaker focus on the road rather than the bumps in it: • Lost the job of a lifetime? Were you right for it in the first place? How much time would you have wasted trying to make something work that should never have been?

• Failed in a flash? Experts say that the entrepreneurs who suffer most and who achieve the least are the ones whose businesses die slow deaths. Better to get it over with in a hurry and move on than to agonize for years trying to squeeze life out of a weak idea.

Managing Medicine and the Holidays- Pharmacist’s Advice The holidays bring plenty to look forward to, including time off work and school. These changes in daily routine may mean that medications may take a back seat. To make sure you stay on track and stay healthy, Amy Tiemeier, Pharm.D., BCPS, associate professor at St. Louis College of Pharmacy, has some advice.

“This is really the time to make sure you’re taking your medication as prescribed,” Tiemeier says. “Focus on taking medication as it is prescribed in the weeks leading up to time off, travel, or holiday gatherings. Establishing those good patterns now will help you keep them going through this hectic time of year.”

Forgetting Medication Medication for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes is often built into the daily habits of patients. A change in those habits could lead to problems remembering to take your medication. With so much happening at this time of year, it’s easy to forget to take a dose of medication.

“If you forget to take your medication at a particular time, call your pharmacist,” Tiemeier advises. “You may need to take the medication right away, or you might be OK waiting until the next scheduled dose. Your pharmacist can help you figure out what’s best for your situation.”

In the rush to pack everything for a trip to grandma’s house, or that dream holiday getaway, it’s also very easy for patients to leave needed medication behind. In many cases patients can obtain an emergency supply.

“Call your pharmacist as soon as you realize you don’t have your medi-

cation,” Tiemeier says. “The pharmacist will be able to advise you on the steps to take to make sure you get your medication as quickly as possible.”

Travelling with Medication When packing for a trip, keep medications with you in your car or in your carry-on luggage. Typically, medicine should be stored between 68 and 77 Fahrenheit unless it needs refrigeration.

Excessive cold in the cargo hold of an airplane or heat from the sun can make it less effective.

“Having your medication in freezing conditions for a few minutes should not change its effectiveness,” Tiemeier says.

“If your medication was exposed to extreme temperatures or humidity, check to see if it smells different than normal or if the capsules or tablets are look different than they usually do. When in doubt, have a pharmacist inspect it.”

If travelling through airport with liquid medication, check the TSA guidelines (http://www.tsa.gov/travelerinformation/what-expect-if-passengerneeds-medication) to make sure you can get through security quickly and easily.

Avoiding Complications Many overindulge in the last six weeks of the year. For some it’s too many home-baked cookies, for others it’s alcohol at a holiday dinner. Straying from a prescribed diet can be dangerous for patients with a number of diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure.

For patients who don’t normally drink, having some alcohol at a gathering can affect how medication works in the body. When a patient drinks, the alcohol can change how the medication works in the body or can increase the side effects of medications.

“Patients taking over-the-counter medications to help their cough or runny nose may feel especially sleepy after a couple of drinks at a holiday party or family gathering,” Tiemeier says. “Patients could also become dizzy. The older a patient is, the more likely he or she will feel these effects.”

Take Action Tiemeier says patients taking an active role in managing their health usually feel better and have a better understanding of their conditions. She advocates for patients to know and write down important health information like blood glucose levels, blood pressure, weight, and all prescription and over-the-counter medications.

“It can be difficult for patients to control their blood pressure or blood sugar on the average day,” Tiemeier says. “Add in holidays and all the stress and changes in routine that occur, and there’s an increased chance of medica-

tion problems which could lead to a serious health issue. However, with a little planning and assistance from your pharmacist if problems do occur, you can enjoy the holidays and stay healthy.”

Obituaries Michael F. Blenker

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Michael F. “Mike” Blenker, age 98 of Albany was held at 11:00 AM Monday December 15, 2014 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Honorary Pallbearers were the members of the Catholic United Financial Council #400. Father Brad Jenniges, OSB and Fr. Eberhard Schefers co-officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery. Mike passed away peacefully on December 10, 2014 at the Mother Of Mercy Nursing Home.

Mike was born on August 19, 1916 to Frank and Mary (Hiltner) Blenker in

Funeral services will be at a later date for Jane Becker, 63, of Albany who died Saturday, December 13 at her home with her loving husband by her side.

Jane was born February 19, 1951 in St. Cloud to Roman and Adeline (Christen) Tamm. She married Steve Becker on April 24, 1971 in Albany. Jane worked for Fingerhut for 15 years as an Administrative Assistant. Jane and Steve were very involved in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program.

Albany, MN. Mike grew up and worked on his farm outside of Albany and lived his entire life in the Albany area. He married Olivia Schefers on November 14, 1944 in Richmond, MN. He was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Catholic United Financial Council #400. Mike enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He also enjoyed spending time with this family and friends.

He is survived by his brother, Andrew Blenker of Albany, and a sister Frances Metzger of Kennewick, WA; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mary; his wife, Olivia; five siblings: Leo, Joseph, Roman and Herman Blenker, and Marie Schefers.

Funeral arrangements were made with the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home of Albany.

Jane is survived by her husband, Steve of Albany, siblings, Mary (Jim) Berning of St. Michael, Frances (John) Fischer of Freeport, Edmund (Diane) Tamm of Fort Ripley, Margaret Hirschfeld of Cold Spring, Catherine (Alcuin) Marthaler of Osakis, Sharon Moeller of Orange County, CA, Colleen “Pete” (Jim) Holien of Hibbing. She was preceded in death by her parents.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 17 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Rev. Jeremy Theis officiated with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Julianna June Weber was born June 23, 1927 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Leo and Mary (Tillman) Weber. On June 18, 1946 she married Alphonse “Al” Trisko at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple resided in Sauk Centre and Julie was employed

by Burger Hut for 23 years. From 1988 to 1999 she was a valued part-time employee at Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services, where she assisted the Patton’s in many capacities, retiring in 1999.

Julie enjoyed outdoor activities including camping, gardening, and bird watching. She also enjoyed knitting,

crocheting, and loved spending time with her family. She will be remembered as an honest, loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 Auxiliary, Sauk Centre Senior Citizens, and the Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her two children, Larry (Terry) Trisko of Melrose and Roseann (Darrell) Lewis of St. Paul; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Raymond (Irene) Trisko, Jerome Trisko, Clarence (Rita) Trisko and Richard (Carol) Trisko, all of Sauk Centre; sister-in-law, Viola Kramer of Alexandria; son-in-law, Donald Woeste of Melrose; and daughtersin-law, Doris Trisko-Kuehne of Avon and Sally Colegrove of Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alphonse “Al” Trisko on October 30, 2013; children, infant Mary Ann, Gene, Ron and Dennis Trisko, and Diane Woeste; brothers and sisters, Louis Weber, Emma Eckberg, Mary Barhorst, Julian Weber, Arthur Weber, Leona Pfeffer and Lucille Egan; and an infant sister.

Serving as casket bearers will be her grandchildren, Paul Woeste, Joe Woeste, Nick Trisko, Brian Trisko, Kayla Snow, and Teresa Woida.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I gave my wife $350 for Christmas shopping at WalMart. While she was there with our six-yearold daughter, she cashed her bonus check to put with the Christmas money. When she tried to check out, the money was gone. My wife even asked our daughter if she took the money out of mommy’s purse, and she said no. Later, we found the money in our daughter’s coat, and she didn’t seem sorry at all for having taken it. How should we address this?

-Jonathan Dear Jonathan, Most children that age really have no idea something like this is such a big deal. But this is more than just a money thing. It’s something of great value, and it’s someone else’s stuff.

Not only that, but she took it, lied about it and then showed no remorse. I’ve got a really short fuse when it comes to lying, but the lack of repentance and sorrow associated with something like this are my biggest problems.

First of all, you and your wife have to present a united front when you talk about this with your child. This is an incredible example of a teachable moment, but you two have to be on the same side and treat it with appropriate seriousness. You have to make your daughter understand that what she did was wrong and why it was wrong.

Perhaps you could also use an example of someone taking something from her — something that was very valuable to her — and ask how she would feel in that situation.

Lots of times this approach, especially with little kids, will touch their hearts and help them realize the magnitude of their actions. In a case like this, I think I’d hand out very little in the way of punishment. Regardless, you have to nip this kind of thing in the bud immediately. This is the kind of violation you cannot allow to happen unaddressed. And whatever the consequences of her actions end up being, you must make sure she clearly understands why she’s being punished

and why what she did was wrong.

I’ve been interviewing, and he started a twoweek training program for a new job the other day, but right now we’re in survival mode. We just cashed in an annuity, and were wondering if we should pay down debt and reduce the money going out each month, or just live on it?

-Veronica Dear Veronica, Right now, it’s raining and you need an umbrella. If it were me, I’d just sit on the money for the time being.

Don’t misunderstand me. You need to be honorable and pay your debts, but you may have to put that on hold for a while. Right now, it’s more important to have food in the house and keep the heat on. This kind of situation is scary and can be really stressful, so make sure you hug and hold on to each other a lot, too.

It’s been rough for you guys, especially right here during the holidays. But it sounds like things may be taking a turn for the better.

Your husband is about to start making money again, and you may have some possibilities on the horizon.

Through this stretch, honest communication can make a huge difference. Make sure your creditors know what’s happening. Let them know that you want to make things right, and that you will make things right as soon as you can.

Once upon a time, there was great prosperity in the world. People lived in extravagant self indulgence, luxurious living, immorality of all sorts, judicial corruption, and other atrocities aimed at destroying God’s people. The sanctity of human life and morals had dwindled down to mean pretty much nothing at all.

People grew farther and farther away from the Truth and belief in the One True God. They adapted and followed mythology and mystical teachings in an attempt to satisfy the spiritual part of the human soul that was filled with emptiness. It was much more enticing to go along with the culture and its many gods, more tempting to just go along with the majority. They possibly had the attitude of, ‘Well, everyone else is doing it’.

Year after year, there were less and less true followers to pass on the marvelous faith stories of their heritage. Fewer and fewer children grew up hearing the truth. Were they possibly too busy indulging in ‘other things’?

There were still forms of godliness and religious traditions being practiced, however, their hearts were far from God. Even the priests had become corrupt in doing detestable things. One could easily wonder if God had forgotten His people and turned His back on them.

There were no true prophets during this time period to cry out to God on behalf of God’s people. The world had become a dark and sin filled place.

But then... after 400 years of the Lord’s silence, in the midst of the darkness, God sent Hope! He found a faithful Jewish girl, Mary. Mary had been part of a ‘remnant’ of God’s people that had not blended in to the corrupt culture around her. She had remained faithful despite living in the darkness of the world. God chose Mary to be the Blessed mother of His One and Only Son, Jesus!

Jesus was the Light that shined in the darkness, John 1:5. People then, just like today, have not understood, that despite their prosperity, free living and self indulgence... they need a Savior!

Most reject Him not so much by their words about Him, but by their actions and how they live their lives and treat people around them.

In other parts of the world today, true Christ followers are being persecuted and even put to death because of their

faith in Jesus. Other religious groups that are trying to take over are trying to ‘Get rid of Jesus’. This is nothing new.

It was the religious leaders in Jesus’ day that played a key role in His death on the cross.

Jesus humiliated them by exposing who they really were underneath their fancy robes and religious talk. That is what light does; it exposes what is in the darkness. Jesus said in John 3:19-20 as He talked with Nicodemus, “Light has come in to the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil, they will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.”

Once upon another time, Jesus is going to return with His angels. He will take with Him all who have remained faithful to Him despite the darkness. All who have been truly born again into His family, John 3:3.

The only way to sincerely understand this Light in a dark world, is to look beyond the glitter and chaos and look in to God’s Word, the Holy Bible.

If you are a true seeker of the truth, you will find it. If you are a smug, liberal, faultfinder with the attitude of a pharisee, it will not make a bit of sense to you.

You will remain blinded to the truth and continue living in darkness.

When Jesus returns, it will be too late to change your mind. The time of His Saving Grace is now today.

This Christmas, may we strive to live like Mary, and be that faithful follower that does not blend in to the culture around us. Let’s be different and dare to be a light in the darkness!

A Mom’s Letter to Santa

Dear Santa, I’ve been a good mom all year. I’ve fed, cleaned, and cuddled my two children on demand, visited the doctor’s office more than my doctor, sold sixtytwo cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground, and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughter’s girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son’s red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I’ll find any more free time in the next 18 years.

Here are my Christmas wishes: I’d like a pair of legs that don’t ache after a day of chasing kids (in any color, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don’t flap in the breeze, but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store.

I’d also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy.

If you’re hauling big ticket items this year, I’d like a car with fingerprintresistant windows and a radio that plays only big-people music; a television that doesn’t broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use

a talking daughter doll that says, “Yes, Mommy” to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained toddler, two kids who don’t fight, and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools.

I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, “Don’t eat in the living room” and “Take your hands off your brother,” because my voice seems to be just out of my children’s hearing range and can be heard only by the dog.

And please don’t forget the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers.

It comes in three fluorescent colors and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet, making the in-law’s house seem just like mine.

If it’s too late to find any of these products, I’d settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don’t mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It would clear my conscience immensely.

It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family; or if my toddler didn’t look so cute sneaking downstairs in his pajamas to eat contraband ice cream at midnight.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you don’t catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table, but don’t eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

In the weeks before Christmas, the Morrison County Food Shelf held its annual “Make-A-Joyful Noise” fund-raiser at Coborns. During the event, volunteers preformed, or played, Christmas music while soliciting donations for the Food Shelf. The event is expected to raise a total of $3500, which includes $1000 in supplemental funds from Thrivent Financial. Think twice before going out on the ice With the recent weather fluctuation and inconsistent ice conditions, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is urging everyone to think twice before going out on the ice.

“Ice is never 100 percent safe,” said Maj. Greg Salo, DNR enforcement operations manager. “Don’t put yourself in needless danger. Check ice conditions before venturing out. No fish is worth unnecessary risks.”

Anglers and snowmobilers need to be cautious. Several ATV’s, trucks and fish houses have gone through the ice in recent days. Ice that is 6 inches thick in one area may only be an inch thick in another location.

So far this year, one person has died after going through the ice. Last winter, three people died after falling through thin ice.

Salo recommends anyone heading out on the ice should: carry a set of ice picks, check with a local bait shop or resort - ask about ice conditions - and measure the ice.

If ice at the shoreline is cracked or squishy, stay off. Don’t go on the ice during thaws. Avoid honeycombed ice, dark snow, and dark ice.

Ice is generally thinner where there is moving water, such as inlets and outlets, bridge abutments, islands, and objects that protrude through the ice.

The DNR clear ice thickness recommendations are: • Four inches for walking.

• Five inches for a snowmobile or ATV. • Eight-12 inches for a car.

• 12-15 inches for a medium-sized truck.

Some of those include joining a 4-H club, participating in an afterschool adventure in your school, community service projects, learning life skills and volunteering. Todd County has eight clubs, in all parts of the county that are always eager to have new families join them.

4-H clubs are groups of youth who meet regularly to work on 4-H projects, perform community service, develop leadership skills and learn to work together. Being a member of a club gives youth the opportunity to meet new friends and caring adults that will help them experience 4-H and have fun.

Whether youth are building rockets, raising dairy cows or writing musical plays, 4-H gives the life skills needed to be successful.

A Tufts University national study on positive youth development found that

4-H youth are: • More than 3.4 times as likely to be civically active and contribute to their communities.

• 47% less likely to have risky or problem behaviors.

• Have better grades and are more emotionally engaged in school.

• Nearly 2 times more likely to plan to go to college.

• 2.3 times more likely to exercise and be physically active.

• More likely to pursue courses or a career in science, engineering, or computer technology.

Birth Announcement Damien John Doll

Christopher and Kristy Doll of Elrosa are proud to announce the birth of their son, Damien John Doll, born Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 10:56 p.m., at the CentraCare Health-Melrose.

Damien weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Kresha Named Vice Chair of Education Finance Committee Rep. Ron Kresha, R-Little Falls, will serve as Vice Chair of the Education Finance Committee, Speaker-designate Kurt Daudt announced. Kresha, who begins his second term in January and was elected Assistant Majority Leader, served on the Education Policy Committee during the 2013-2014 session. Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-Eden Prairie, will serve as the Education Finance Committee Chair.

“Improving our education system for Minnesota students is at the top of the priority lists for members on both sides of the aisle,” Kresha said. “The status-quo isn’t cutting it for too many students, and I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on ways to address the challenges we face and work to give students, teachers, and parents the tools they need to succeed.”

House is Gearing Up for 2015 Session Preparations are being made for the opening of the new legislative session, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 6.

A new committee structure was announced

by Speaker-elect Kurt Daudt, and movers are busy as House members switch offices. I’ve wondered about the practicality of moving to a different office every two years, but it’s a longstanding tradition that the majority party locates its offices on the fourth floor of the State Office Building in St. Paul. It’s a good time to go through material that’s been in file folders for too long and discard what’s not pertinent. So, things are boxed up, walls receive a fresh coat of paint, and the move is made. It’s quite a process, and things are in a state of flux for the period when up to 134 offices, and more for staff, are made ready for new tenants. The transition should be complete by the end of December.

Republicans made strong gains in this fall’s election from outstate Minnesota. So, reflecting that strength, the new committee structure features an emphasis on issues that deeply affect those regions of the state. It had been a contentious move when the DFL combined agriculture finance with the environment committee two years ago.

Now, ag will have its own committee, in

fact there will be two that focus on one of our state’s leading economic drivers.

Rep. Rod Hamilton will chair finance, and I will lead the ag policy committee.

We have discussed the many issues pertinent to agriculture and will have full slates to take up when committee meetings get underway.

Water issues have long been the subject of discussion in ag circles. It can be too much water, such as drainage issues, or the threat of too little water, which brings up the topic of irrigation. The DNR has been conducting meetings in the Bonanza Valley all summer as they attempt to come up with guidelines for long term water sustainability. Although nothing has been finalized yet, there is a concern that water use may be curtailed in times when the need for irrigation is the highest. These meetings are dealing with both water quantity and water quality, which to me are two separate issues.

Other topics that my committee will deal with include transportation as it relates to ag commodities, the supply of fuels such as propane and diesel, education issues as they relate to agriculture, and farmer-lender mediation. Other topic such as the labeling of GMO foods may also come up as some want states to require such labeling. Oregon was the latest state to reject it, although the vote total was extremely close. There may also be bills introduced to allow the cultivation of industrial hemp, which several states, including North Dakota, have already done. However, until the federal government gives its blessing, the actual growing of the crop won’t happen.

His well-trained troops? His superior skills as a leader?

Indeed not. His confidence was in his Lord who was his light, salvation and strength. The word David uses for confidence in this verse means to feel secure or to be unconcerned. His confidence, the security he enjoyed, when facing the uncertainties of life and the certainty of death was in the Lord Himself.

David’s passion was to live in the Lord’s house and to behold His beauty.

Living in the Lord’s house means much more than being an occasional visitor.

It implies being a resident now and in eternity. To behold His beauty means to enjoy God’s goodness and blessings.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle City November 12, 2014 The regular meeting of the Grey Eagle City Council was called to order by Mayor Jim Gohman at 7:00 p.m., on the 12th day of November, 2014 in council chambers.

Council members present were Ralph Muellner, Andrea Kraska, Dennis Barrett and Thom Muellner.

There were no council members absent. Also in attendance were Lori Hellmann, Andy Bartkowicz, and guests Mike Allen and Bill Berscheit.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the amended agenda. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the minutes of the October 14, 2014 with the following changes: page 1501, paragraph five, first sentence: change the word west to east, page 1501, paragraph six, first sentence change Dan Berscheit to Dan Berscheid, page 1503, last paragraph, first sentence remove “a complaint”, and page 1504, third paragraph, first sentence, change the word vacation to the word vacated. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed complaints received of a wood stove that is installed in a resident’s garage that is alleged to also be heating the home. After speaking with the city attorney, it was determined that if this resident is also heating the home, then the wood stove would be considered an outdoor wood burning stove, which is not allowed by city ordinance. A certified letter will be sent to the resident regarding this issue, along with a copy of the ordinance. The property owner will be given fourteen days to comply with the inspection portion of the ordinance to determine that the burner is only being used to heat the garage. Failure to comply with the inspection requirements will result in the city applying for an application for a court order. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to send the letter, stating what is required by ordinance and giving fourteen days to comply with the inspection. A second was made by Jim Gohman and roll call vote was taken with members voting as follows: Thom Muellner-aye, Dennis Barrett-aye, Andrea Kraska-aye, Ralph Muellner-aye, Jim Gohmanaye. Motion carried.

Mayor Jim Gohman opened the public hearing regarding the vacation of Bovee Street North from North Lake Street West at 7:30 p.m.

The purpose of the public hearing was to allow input from affected property owners regarding the vacation of Bovee Street North from North Lake Street West. There were no residents in attendance for the public hearing. The public hearing was closed at 7:36 p.m.

A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve Resolution NO. 2014-20, A Resolution Vacating (a portion of) Street upon a Petition of a Majority of Abutting Landown-

ers. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and roll call vote was taken, with council members voting as follows: Dennis Barrett-aye, Andrea Kraska-aye, Ralph Muellnerabstained, Jim Gohman-aye, Thom Muellner-aye. The council discussed complaints they received about a resident that is keeping chickens on their property. The Clerk was instructed to send a letter along with a copy of the ordinance to have the chickens removed or the matter will be turned over to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

The council discussed the three quotes that were received to jet and televise the sewer lines to determine the condition of the lines. The council will look over the estimates more closely and will discuss further at the December meeting.

Fire Chief Bill Berscheit discussed the new chassis for the 5,000 gallon tanker. The cost would be approximately $130,000 $150,000 fully equipped. Between fire funds and investments there is $294,208.27 available to use towards this purchase. A motion was made by Dennis Barrett to approve the new fully equipped chassis for the 5,000 gallon tanker. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and a roll call vote was taken with the council voting as follows: Andrea Kraska-aye, Thom Muellner-aye, Ralph Muellner-aye, Dennis Barrett-aye, Jim Gohman-aye. Motion carried.

The following water/wastewater/maintenance items were discussed.

1. Update Building Supplies submitted a quote for a 9x14 fire proof room in the attic of the old city hall to store city records. The quote was for $1,969.61 for the cost of the supplies and does not include labor to build the room, electrical, taping and painting. The matter was tabled until other issues with the old city hall are repaired.

2. The council discussed the purchase of a commercial dehumidifier to help remove the moisture in the old city hall, as well a means to allow air movement while the building is unused. The Council will look over the situation within the next month and discuss at the December meeting.

3. Andy will check all the Christmas decorations and have them up by Thanksgiving.

4. The council discussed the first snow of the season and how it pertains to snow removal. Andy contacted Herdering and the streets will be widened.

5. The council discussed the use of the city ponds. It was brought to the council’s attention that someone had gained access without authorization or knowledge of city staff. Any unauthorized entry or access to the pond is considered trespassing. Residents are reminded that arrangements need to be made with city hall and that brush, leaves, grass clippings and garden vegetation are the only items allowed to be dumped. No wood, wood chips, cement, ap-

pliances, etc., are allowed to be dumped by the ponds.

6. A question was asked whether or not the city has received a water quality report for the city water supply. There has been no report received at this time.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to set Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., as the date for the Truth in Taxation Meeting with a continuation date of Wednesday, December 10, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., if needed. A second was made by Dennis Barrett and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

The council discussed whether or not to include recycling as offered by Tom’s Refuse for an additional $3.00 per month to city residents after the recycling dumpster had been removed in the City of Burtrum. If recycling were to be included to the residents, everyone would have to pay for it whether they used it or not. The council decided that they would not include recycling at this time.

The council discussed the water and sewer rates. The council will look at what the rates were before the increases and discuss at the December meeting.

The Clerk discussed the adding of late fees to the utility bills.

The Clerk will check into when the late fees would be applied to an account and what happens if payment is made by the due date but was not posted to the account on the due date.

The council received complaints on garbage cans that remain on the street after the garbage has been picked up. Residents are asked to not leave their containers at the

end of the driveway as a courtesy to other residents and for snow removal purposes. Letters will be sent to those that do not put their garbage cans away in a timely manner.

There were no building permit applications for council consideration.

There was no yard clean up concerns for council consideration.

The Clerk informed the council that Bob Lefavor would like to donate the sign by the school to the city. The city would have to find a new location for the sign and have it removed before May 2015.

A motion was made by Ralph Muellner to approve the various fund transfers as follows: $748.36 from the Fire Fund to the Fire Hall Debt Service Fund and $82.70 from the General Fund of which $24.70 goes to the Water Fund and $58 goes to the Sewer Fund for Fire Hall and Library utilities. A second was made by Andrea Kraska and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

A motion was made by Thom Muellner to approve the payment of bills as listed and to include a payment to Minnesota Revenue for $694. A second was made by Ralph Muellner and upon vote, with all members voting in favor, motion carried.

Keep safety in mind when enjoying darkhouse spearing After sawing a wide rectangle into the ice, a person holds a fish spear at the ready while looking through the water, past a small decoy meant to lure northern pike into range. A well-placed throw results in a pike on the ice and destined for the frying pan.

Darkhouse spearing has ancient origins, but the activity may be new for many. It’s become especially popular on the newly-formed ice on Mille Lacs Lake, which opened for darkhouse spearing this year for the first time since the winter of 1982-83. The current season for darkhouse spearing opened Nov. 15 and runs through Feb. 22.

For those new to spearing, there are some additional points of safety to keep in mind while out on the ice, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Once a block of ice is cut, it can be pushed under the ice or pulled out onto the surface.

If removed, the ice should be placed back into the hole and the hole marked when the spearer removes a darkhouse.

If the block of ice is pushed underneath the surface, the hole should be marked, as should any blocks that are left on top of the ice.

“It’s great to see the crowds come out for this new opportunity to spear northern pike on Mille Lacs. We’ve got an abundance of smaller pike which can make for a great day on the ice, and for a great fish fry,” said Rick Bruesewitz, DNR Aitkin area fisheries supervisor.

“Along with the popularity of spearing, we’re reminding folks to mark their holes when they leave them. Safety for

those spearing and others traveling on the lake is the most important consideration.”

Paul Lundeen, president of the Minnesota Darkhouse & Angling Association, said the organization stresses the importance of putting your block of ice back in and marking that spot with biodegradable markers, preferably in each corner of the hole.

“Push that block back in the ice and make sure you mark that hole,” Lundeen said.

Usually, Lundeen said, the practice of pushing the block of ice under the surface is easiest because the ice bobs after being cut free.

“It’s actually so much easier. Why lift the block on top of the ice? That thing is heavy,” he said.

The spearing association also stresses to make sure spearers know their target, to avoid spearing fish that aren’t northern pike.

“Just like deer hunting, don’t throw your spear unless you’re aware of what your target is,” Lundeen said.

Lundeen also said spearers might consider passing on the large fish. While small pike have increased in abundance in Mille Lacs in recent years, large pike are limited in numbers and worth conSpearing continued to pg 11

serving. Also, make sure to pick up any litter from the ice when leaving, he said.

Overall, Lundeen said, spearing can be a thrill, just like hunting. And there’s the craft of making decoys that attract fish, of living the history of spearing, and of getting kids and grandkids out on the ice to share in the fun.

“It’s just like deer hunting – you can sit there for hours and all of a sudden you can look and there’s a deer. It’s just like that with spearing,” Lundeen said.

Statewide, anglers and spearers can keep three northern pike, and one of those three can be over 30 inches. On Mille Lacs Lake, anglers and spearers can keep 10 northern pike, and one of those 10 can be over 30 inches. All spearers and anglers should check for special regulations that may be in effect for individual waters.

By Val Cervenka, DNR forest health program coordinator Q: When I hiked in the Black Hills of South Dakota recently, I observed the many dying trees related to insect infestation. We take all these precautions when using firewood, but is there cause for concern with Christmas trees being shipped from various places around the nation? It seems like a possible way to spread pests and diseases.

A: You are right to be concerned.

According to the lead nursery inspector at the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), most of our imported Christmas trees are from Michigan and Wisconsin, along with Fraser fir from the Carolinas. Gypsy moth is the main concern on trees coming from those states, and regional inspectors visually check Christmas trees as they come into Minnesota in bulk. The Agriculture Department also conducts spot checks on tree sales lots. The focus of these inspections is proper certification under all applicable state and federal quarantines.

responsible for killing pines in the Black Hills and in much of the western United States. This insect attacks trees that are 5 inches or more in diameter. Most Christmas trees you’ll find on sales lots are smaller than this. The MDA is considering regulations to prevent the importation of pine wood with bark on it from states where mountain pine beetle occurs. These regulations would be enforced through a state exterior quarantine tentatively scheduled to take effect Jan. 1.

Finally, consider buying Christmas trees grown in Minnesota. That way, you can be sure you won’t be importing an unknown pest.
