Hard work is the most important key to success. Without a willingness to work hard, business success is nearly impossible. No matter what industry you work in, hard work is most often the secret to success. Take it from Thomas Edison, who said success is “One percent inspiration, 99% perspiration.”

One of the keys to hard work is motivation. But how do you stay motivated to do the hard work necessary to be successful? For some it’s accomplishing small tasks in order to achieve big goals. For others it’s focus, consistency, dedication and

perseverance.

For me, it’s a three-prong approach: I keep physically fit to accomplish what I need to; I start out each day with my most important task; and I reward myself often for working hard. I like to surround myself with positive, motivated people who encourage me.

The harder you work for something, the greater you’ll feel when you achieve it.

Working hard becomes a habit, a serious kind of fun. You get self-satisfaction from pushing yourself to the limit, knowing that all the effort is going to pay off.

Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, said: “If you love your work, you’ll be out there every day trying to do it the best you possibly can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch the passion from you – like a fever.”

Work isn’t work if you enjoy it. I’m so convinced of that notion that the subtitle of one of my books is “Do what you love.

Love what you do, and deliver more than you promise.”

Sam Ewing, former professional baseball player, said: “Hard work spotlights the character of people: Some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.”

To work hard you need to minimize distractions. Interruptions are a killer because you lose focus and productivity.

That’s why I set aside time at the end of the day for returning phone calls and emails.

Many people talk about multi-tasking, but I think it’s detrimental to accomplishing your goals. It’s hard to constantly start and stop what you are doing. Finishing the task at hand is tremendous motivation to move to the next.

Author David Bly offers this assessment: “Striving for success without hard work is like trying to harvest where you haven’t planted.”

In a small village lived a hardworking farmer who owned a vast vineyard. Year after year the vineyard provided a rich harvest, and the farmer became very successful.

He had three sons who were young and energetic but never bothered to work hard.

As the farmer grew old, he began to worry about his sons’ future.

Then he fell very ill and realized his death was fast approaching. He called the sons and told them: “Dear sons, I see my death nearing me, but before I bid goodbye to all of you, I want to share a secret. There is a treasure hidden under the fields. Dig the entire field after my death to find it.”

The old farmer died. After the funeral, the sons began to dig for the treasure without leaving any part of the field untouched, but they found nothing. However, their digging of the field led to a healthy crop and resulted in huge earnings. This made the sons realize what their father meant: Hard work pays off.

Fruits of hard work are always sweet, whether or not they are in the form you expect.

Mackay’s Moral: Pray for a good crop but don’t forget to hoe.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Wood Cook Stoves

They were the modern kitchen appliance, replacing the hanging of the kettle over the fireplace.

Wow, new and improved and even included a temperature thermometer for the oven.

Cooking on a wood stove required some training, but were quite efficient.

The main problem with their use was that during the heat of the summer, the cook had to do the baking and some of the cooking at 5 AM, to avoid some of the heat in the kitchen.

There usually was a slight smell of kerosene in the kitchen from the corn cobs soaking in kerosene in an old paint pail located behind the stove. The cobs were good fire starters, since the fire in the stove lasted only about an hour without “firing up.” When not being used, the stove was allowed to “go out,” allowing the kitchen to cool down.

Fire was located in one end, the heat moved across the inside top of the stove, to the other end to heat the water reservoir. A constant supply of some hot water to wash dishes—great! The heat in the oven and on the stove top was controlled by the cook using dampers to control air to the fire box.

Callie Schaefer, an Apparel, Merchandising, and Design major from Melrose, was awarded the Textiles and Clothing Scholarship Fund from the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences and its academic units. Schaefer was recognized for exceptional academic performance. The College of Human Sciences is pleased to support Schaefer’s academic journey and pursuit of innovation in their field.

More than $1.4 million in student scholarships are offered each year by the College of Human Sciences and its academic units, in addition to monies awarded by Iowa State at the university level.

Programs in the College of Human Sciences focus on fields of study that expand human potential and improve people’s lives. The college encompasses academic units that include the School of Education and four departments: Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management; Food Science and Human Nutrition; Human Development and Family Studies; Kinesiology and Health.

There was usually a warmer box across the top of the stove about 2 feet above the top heating surface. This area was used to keep cooked food warm. Bread was put there before serving to give it a fresher taste.

The slight smell of wood smoke, along with the smell of fresh bread, made the kitchen the area where the family and guests gathered. German coffee cake was made on Saturday, along with bread and baked beans.

Sunday usually included a roasted chicken and all the “fixins.”

Many wood cook stoves were replaced when electricity came, but a few of the cooks who had used them for so many years continued to use them until the cooks quit working.

Obituaries

Richard A. Trisko

Richard A. Trisko, age 83 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 14 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Richard Alphonse Trisko was born May 4, 1937 in Greenwald, Minnesota to Carl and Anna (Kemper) Trisko and was raised on the family farm. He was united in marriage to Carol Rademacher on May 3, 1974 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Richard worked at Lambert Lumber and at the Stearns County Highway Department, retiring in 1997.

Richard enjoyed his work and keeping his home and belongings in good order and repair.

He enjoyed waking up early, going to bed early, and finding satisfaction in what he was able to accomplish in between. He enjoyed games of logic, watching Westerns, caring for his lawn, and maintained a sizeable vegetable garden for many years, having harvested over a thousand pounds of potatoes during one unusually lucky year. A country person at heart, Richard lived his entire life in the Sauk Centre area and thrived in being surrounded by his family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers - with much overlap between them.

Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Carol Trisko of Sauk Centre; six sons, Mark Trisko of Pine Island, Dale (Bridget) Trisko of Chaska, Joel (Bobbi) Trisko of Rice, John (Jessica) Trisko of Avon, Daniel (Lauren) Trisko of De Pere, Wisconsin, and Curt Trisko of Minneapolis; 13 grandchildren; brothers and sister, Raymond Trisko of Sauk Centre, Viola Kraemer of Alexandria, Jerome Trisko of Sauk Centre, and Clarence Trisko of Sauk Centre; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Trisko of Sauk Centre.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alphonse “Al” Trisko and Raphael Trisko; sisters-in-law, Juliana Trisko, Irene Trisko, and Rita Trisko; and brother-in-law, Frank Kraemer.

Adolph F. Wensmann, age 83 of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, December 14 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating.

Interment was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Adolph Fredrick Wensmann was born November 13, 1937 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Elizabeth (Kolb) Wensmann. He was united in marriage to Mildred (Zierden) Wensmann on October 15, 1966 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Adolph farmed on the family farm east of Melrose until his retirement in 2000.

He also worked on the Millwood Township Board for over 30 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and St. Bernard’s Society. Adolph enjoyed playing cards, putting together puzzles, driving tractor, and loved visiting with his family and friends.

He had a wonderful sense of humor that will be remembered by all who knew him.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Mildred Wensmann of Melrose; children, Bernice (Merlin) Koester of Upsala, Janice (Rick) Brenner of Avon, Kevin (Karen) Wensmann of Melrose, and Keith (Brooke) Wensmann of Melrose; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Kathleen “Dorothy” Roering of Melrose; and brother-in-law, Bernard Brisk of Pierz.

Adolph was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Aubrey Wensmann; brothers and sisters, Mildred Winkels, Rose Mary Steffens, Jerome, Herbert, and LeRoy Wensmann, Marian Brisk, Marcella Bueckers, Donald Wensmann, and Veronica Smude; sisters-in-law, Rita Wensmann, Mary Ann Birr, and Beatrice Wensmann; brothers-in-law, Al Bueckers, Paul Winkels, Butch Smude, Bernard Roering, and Roger Steffens.

Serving as casket bearers were Matthew Koester, Mark Koester, Nate Brenner, Ryan Brenner, Kirby Wensmann, Karter Wensmann, Kendall Wensmann, and Peyton Wensmann.

Cross bearer was Jeff Wensmann and scripture bearer was Jenni Kremers. Honorary bearers were Jean Welle, Nikki Myogeto, Kinsey Wensmann, and Kris Wensmann.

Peggy A. Ruegemer

Peggy A. Ruegemer, age 60 of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 7, 2020 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 18 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date.

There will be no public visitation prior to the Mass. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Peggy Ann Harmeling was born December 10, 1959 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Aloysius and Donna (Baker) Harmeling. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School. On April 29, 2000 she was united in marriage to Sylvester Ruegemer

in St. Cloud. Peggy was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and was president of the Senior Citizens Group in Sauk Centre.

Peggy loved having coffee with her friends and enjoyed reading.

Gordon B. “Gordy” Hannaman

Geneieve Schmidtke on November 20, 1953 in Seattle, Washington. Gordy worked at Kraft in Melrose, Sears in New Ulm, and Montgomery Wards in Fairmont. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose and the Melrose American Legion Post 101. Gordy loved the outdoors where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and hobby farming. He was a day trader and also enjoyed playing cards and poker with family and friends.

Survivors include his loving children, Larry Hannaman of St. Cloud, Jennie (Michael Schaab) Schmidtke of Melrose, and Kim Schwieters of Waco, Texas; 11 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren; sister, Bonnie Bochinski; and brother, Chuck (Judy) Damerow.

Gordy was preceded in death by his wife, Gen Hannaman on April 6, 2016; parents; and brothers, Don Hannaman and Jim Damerow.

Mike enjoyed fishing, gardening, drives out in the country, and above all, spending time with family and friends. He will be greatly missed for his kindness and wonderful sense of humor (no one could deliver a better one-liner).

Gordon B. “Gordy” Hannaman, age 91 of Melrose, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 19 at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. A private inurnment will be held at a later date in Oak Hill Cemetery in Melrose.

Military Honors will be provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m.

Gordon Blaine Hannaman was born July 20, 1929 in Guckeen, Minnesota to John “Jack” and Alice (Wilke) Hannaman. He attended Blue Earth School through the eleventh grade and then graduated from Mankato High School. Gordy served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict with a rank of Private First Class.

He was kept stateside because of his impeccable handwriting. He was united in marriage to Michael J. Frank peacefully left this earth on Saturday, December 12, 2020, to join his wife, Louise and our Lord Jesus in heaven for Christmas this year.

A public graveside service was held Monday, December 14, 2020 at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sauk Centre. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

Mike was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota on September 23, 1917, where he grew up fishing and spending time with his siblings Anne, Joe, and Spic.

In his early 20s, he took a job at a gas station and also delivered groceries whereas fate would have it, he met the love of his life, Louise “Lou” Hanrahan. They were married in 1941 and celebrated 69 wonderful years together until her passing in 2011.

As the U.S. entered WWII, he enlisted, and as luck would have it, he remained state-side when his naval unit missed the train they were supposed to catch. It was there, in California, that he became a letter carrier, a career that he loved and that lasted until retirement.

Eventually he and Lou settled back in Sauk Centre, building a lifetime of memories with their three children. Mike adored his family and loved being a member of the Sauk Centre community. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.

Special thank you to all for your support in the trying times of 2020.

Ty D. Poppenhagen

Ty D. Poppenhagen, age 16, of Upsala, was a phenomenal son and a great friend who lost his struggle with anxiety on Friday, December 11, 2020 at his home in Upsala, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 17 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala with Rev. David Grundman officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Ty Davon Poppenhagen was born April 7, 2004 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Chad and Amy (Burggraff) Poppenhagen. He was currently a sophomore at Upsala High School and part of the graduating class of 2023. Ty enjoyed going camping with his family every summer, fishing,

hunting, and had a passion for photography. While out enjoying nature, he loved discovering new things and would climb rocks, hills and trees to get where he wanted to go. He also enjoyed a good cup of coffee or tea and conversation with his family. He loved to be at grandma and grandpa’s home in Little Falls where they had their own room called the “cuz cave.” He would hop on a bike and cruise around Little Falls with his camera as he recently took up photography as his passion.

Ty was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Survivors include his parents, Chad and Amy Poppenhagen of Upsala; brother, Ari Poppenhagen; sister, Kira Poppenhagen both at home; grandparents, David and Linda Burggraff of Little Falls, step-grandmother, Sonja Kaufman of Reno, Nevada; aunts and uncles, Brian Burggraff, Linda Wrobel, Sherrie Wieling, Lori (Carl) Brown, Tracy (Lyle) Kill, Crystal (Greg) Nichols, and Dave (April) Peterson; and many cousins and friends.

Addie Lucille Young, age 99 of Sauk Centre, formerly of Grey Eagle, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2020 at St. Benedict’s Care Center in St. Cloud due to Covid-19.

Addie Lucille Dickinson was born June 26, 1921 in Hewitt, MN. She was one of 11 children born to Asel and Dora Dickinson. In 1939 she married William (Pat) Young of Grey Eagle, MN. They farmed in the Grey Eagle area. They had three children.

Addie was very active in her community.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Senior Citizens and the Sunshine Girls. She enjoyed cooking and baking for these groups. Addie was a mail carrier for the USPS for several years in the Grey Eagle area.

Addie is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, her husband Pat, and two children: Patsy and Gary.

She is survived by one child, Jenyce Young, 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Addie will be missed for her great attitude, her humor and her compassion.

There will be a graveside service this coming summer or fall of 2021.

Weldon J. “Jimmy” Brendon

Weldon J. “Jimmy” Brendon, age 78 of St. Cloud, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Weldon James Brendon was born March 30, 1942 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Weldon and Fern (Nelson) Brendon. Jimmy lived and worked in St. Cloud for many years. He loved his family and enjoyed being around people.

Survivors include his brother, Bruce (Mary Lu) Brendon of St. Louis Park; brother-in-law, David Kallenbach of Sun City, Arizona; and many nieces nephews.

He joined the Marines and later met and married Mildred Ann (Sieg) Taylor on July 1st, 1950 in Minneapolis. They lived most of their lives in New Brighton, MN. Norman worked for over 40 years for Burlington Northern Railroad for the Operations Dept. He retired in 1987 on Big Birch Lake in Grey Eagle, MN. He is survived by his children, Dennis (Trish) of Annandale, Ronald (Yvonne) of Forest Lake, and Curtis (Beth) of Grey Eagle; 6 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a few great-greatgrandchildren; brother and sister, Jerry (Rosie) Taylor of New Hope, and Betty (David) Johnson of Shoreview.

Upsala City • December 7, 2020 Call to Order/Attendance: The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Johnson at 7:00 PM. Mayor Johnson led the Pledge of Allegiance.

On roll call members in attendance: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Council Members Lana Bartells, Dennis Westrich, Brian Lange, and Crystal Benson.

People attending: Councilmember Elect Mitch Lange, Darlene Maciej, MC Record reporter Tyler Ohmann, Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss, First Response President Andrea Douvier, First Response Team Vice President Garrett Doucette, First Response Team Members Seth Strassburg and Bill Koopmeiners, Public Works Director Mike Tschida, and City Clerk/Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from November 2, 2020 City Council Meeting, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Bartells moved to approve minutes from November 19, 2020 Special Council Meeting certifying the election results, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to approve minutes from November 23, 2020 Special Council Meeting conducting performance reviews, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Department Reports: Fire Department Report: Baggenstoss reported Central MN Avate donated $1500.00 to the Upsala Fire Department. The department did not receive the FEMA grant for turnout gear. He is looking at ways to finance new turnout gear for the entire department.

Bartells moved to approve the following 2021 Officers for the Upsala Fire Department: Chief: Jay Baggenstoss, Asst Chief: Nick Johnson, Captain: Steve Heesen, Captain: Brian Lange, Captain: Mike Kremers, Training: Joe Trettel, Secretary: Brian Lange, Safety: Steve Hansen, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

First Response Team: Doucette reported on the calls for November. The Team received a Morrison County CARES Act dollars grants of $6,000, they also received a grant from Sourcewell $5000.00 for communications equipment.

The County Audit with UFR Team will be next week.

Benson moved to approve the following 2021 Officers for the First Response Team: President: Garrett Doucette, Vice: Andrea Douvier, Secretary: Amber Koopmeiners, Training: Danielle Haus, At Large (safety): Kyle Breth, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

The Team has also created an information packet for new members that includes By-laws, Standard Operating Guidelines, Team Constitution, Confidentiality Agreement, and Privacy Regulations. Doucette requested the Council review the By-Laws and SOG’s to be approved in January.

Maintenance Report: Tschida reported on water and sewer levels. He also updated the Council on the monthly activities.

Tschida explained the end of the year discharging for the sewer ponds.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the Sales & Use Audit for the last three years with the Department of Revenue.

Stevens reviewed the December Calendar.

Planning Commission: Lange reported the Planning & Zoning reviewed the Senior Living property, also discussed the approval of a garage on Borgstrom Street.

Recreation Board: No meeting was held.

Bartells moved to donate $4,000.00 to the Heritage Days Account, 2nd by Lange. Motion Carried unanimously.

Christmas Lighting Contest: Johnson reminded everyone of the Holiday Lighting Contest with last year’s winners being the judges this year will be held December 17.

2021 City Calendar: Stevens shared the 2021 City Calendar with the Council.

Acknowledgements: Dennis Westrich for serving as Councilmember since 2013. Your knowledge of the City’s history, infrastructure and excellent judgement has been priceless!

Jason Malisheske came up with the idea of Upsala Bucks as Christmas Gifts. What a wonderful idea!

Michelle Stevens, Clerk/Treasurer Grey Eagle Township • December 7, 2020 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe & Erv Herdering.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda.

Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 2, 2020 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims for November. Claims included claims numbered 3516-3528 for a total of $4,573.77. Claims were reviewed and Ray made the motion to approve the claims as presented. Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included letters from Todd County P & Z- they are looking for individuals to serve as an alternate on the Todd County Board of Adjustments.

Also, notice of public hearings for Dec. 3rd. A letter was received to offer help for small businesses do payroll and other reporting forms. Several of the Township’s CDs are up for renewal- Mike made a motion to let them renew. Ron made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated not much to report on, however he still has concerns over the stumps that were left in the road right -of-way along 130th. It was stated there are several along 337th as well, left after the sentence to serve crew cut trees.

After some discussion Ray made the motion to have Erv work on removing the stumps from 130th and 337th. Mike made the second. Motion carried. The weed report was discussed and will be completed at the January meeting.

Additional agenda item: The fire board meeting has not been held at this time.

Mary Ann presented a resolution to establish the Grey Eagle Township Polling Place as the Grey Eagle Township Hall. Mike made a motion to approve the resolution, Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Public Comment: A resident from 140th St. was present and asked the Board about removing a tree on 140th St. Ray will check this out.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

James M. “Jim” LeClaire, age 74 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at the CentraCare Care Center in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, December 21 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Andrew’s Cemetery in Greenwald. Military Honors will be provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

There will be no visitation prior to the Mass at church.

Eric Mergen, 48, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2020 with family by his side. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, December 14th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Interment followed in the St. Catherine’s

Cemetery in Farming.

Eric was born March 12, 1972 to Joseph and Marilyn Mergen. He is the second youngest in the family of ten children. He graduated from Albany High School in 1990; began working for Kraft and remained employed at Kraft for over 30 years, until his death. He married Brenda Bican in 2016 and they resided near Albany. Eric is known for his quiet demeanor, patience, always willing to lend a helping hand, and more than

Dorothy Ann Lowe

A longtime resident of Holdingford, Dorothy Ann Lowe, 94, died on December 9, 2020 at Monticello Care Center due to complications from COVID-19.

Dorothy was born on July 1, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Edward and Marie Gurney.

She graduated as valedictorian from Mahtomedi High School and on June 28, 1947 she married her high school sweetheart, Edward. In the first months of their marriage they lived in a Quonset hut in Willernie, and in 1950 they moved to Holdingford. While working as a library assistant at school, Dorothy found the time to sew dresses for her three daughters, garden and can, sew Raggedy Ann dolls, and work complicated cross stitch works of art. She was generous, always thinking of others first. Her daughters recall an epic weekend involving hours of work by their willing mother: Barb’s wedding for which she made the wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses and all of the reception food; Pat’s high school graduation party, requested by Pat at the last minute, and helping Ann prepare to study abroad in Egypt. When she and Ed travelled to Mexico, Dorothy spent hours collecting school supplies and clothes to give to a girls’ orphanage. Dorothy celebrated every holiday with festive meals and was known for her crescent and caramel nut rolls, barbecued ribs and

1946 in Melrose, Minnesota to Arnold and Dorine (Thielen) LeClaire. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1964 and served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1965 through 1971. Jim worked for the Melrose Telephone Company, LeClaire Electric in New Munich, and Aaron Electric in Blaine, Minnesota. In 1976, Jim moved to Bemidji and worked as State Electrical Inspector for 25 years. He started working at Home Depot in 2002 until retiring in 2019. Two of Jim’s favorite hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his children, Paul LeClaire of Sacramento, California and Kelli Seitz of Bemidji; step-daughter, Kristen Nelson of Bemidji; two grandchildren, James and Juliana LeClaire; step-grandson, Wyatt Nelson; brothers and sister, Tom (Barb) LeClaire of Woodbury, Lola (Mark) Welle of Sauk Centre, and Perry (Kathy) LeClaire of Spring Hill.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and son, Michael LeClaire.

Arrangements were made with Patton-Schad Funeral & Cremation Services of Sauk Centre. anything his humble and simple life. He loved hunting, campfires, online & live auctions, and searching the internet for great deals.

Eric is survived by his loving wife Brenda, his stepdaughters Nicole and Kali Bican-Job, his mother, Marilyn Mergen of Farming, motherin-law Darlene (Orin) Baxter; his brothers and sisters: Kerry (Barb) Mergen of Farming, Tim (Lynn) Mergen of Litchfield, Tom (Kim) Mergen of Fountain Hills, AZ, Michelle (Brad) Fleischacker of Winsted, Maureen (Ron) Schaefer of Melrose, Joe (Joani) Mergen of Albany, Margo (John) Mackedanz of Lakeville, Kurt (Janice) Mergen of Maple Lake, Lee Mergen of Burtrum and many nieces and nephews that were very special to him. He is also survived by his in-laws Judy Branum of St. Paul, Trudy Bican of St. Paul, Jack (Kelly) Bican of Clarissa, Dawn (Billy) Brown of Eagle Bend, Vicki Goad of Sartell, Brian (Jackie) Bican of Monticello.

Eric was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Mergen, his grandparents Joe & Hedwig (Haddie) Winter, John & Gertrude Mergen, his father-in-law Jack Bican, Agnes & John Bican, Lelah & Lowell Swanson. baked beans. We remember young teachers just happening to stop by the house on Saturdays to enjoy thick slices of homemade bread slathered with butter and homemade jam. In her later years, she loved gathering with friends for a monthly afternoon of crafting. She was a member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church and started the funeral lunch group there and decorated the altar with garden flowers for many years.

A private service will be held with burial at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, Minnesota. A gathering to celebrate Dorothy’s life will be held at a later date.

She will always be remembered with love by her children: Barbara Pladson (Paul) of St. Augusta, Ann Lowe (John Falconer) of Red Wing and Pat Hintz (Greg) of Missoula, Montana.

Dorothy had six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward in 2014 and a young son, Thomas.

Memorials are preferred to Helping Hands, Holdingford or All Saints’ Catholic Church, Holdingford.

Also, make your goals measurable. If you want to lose weight, don’t simply write down “lose weight” as a goal. How much weight do you want to lose?

How many pounds would you have to lose per week in order to see the desired result in a specified amount of time?

Setting a time frame will help you develop more realistic goals, too. And last, always put your goals in writing. Write them down, and review them often. This will provide you with added motivation to make your goals a reality.

Successful people examine and reassess their lives on a regular basis. When they realize changes need to be made, they start living intentionally, in writing, on paper, and on purpose!

Burglary: December 14, 2020: At approximately 7:55 a.m., received a report of a business burglary at Elmdale Creamery, located off Highway 238, in the city of Elmdale, MN. Sometime between 12:10 p.m. on Saturday 12-12-2020 and 7:30 a.m. on Monday 12-14-2020 the suspect(s) made entry inside the building through the back door. According to the initial investigation, cash from the register was reported stolen.

This case is still under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance if they witnessed any suspicious activity at the creamery during these time frames. If you have information regarding this burglary, you are asked to call the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office at 320-632-9233.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a 2011 GMC Yukon with 4-wheel drive and auto transmission.

For several years I have been having issues with the 4x4 not working. Sometimes it will work but other times I get a service four-wheel drive message on the dash and it will not engage. There have also been a couple times where I was driving down the road and it has switched into 2-wheel drive from 4 on its own. When I have been to a shop, they cannot duplicate the issue so they cannot fix it. Are their any things I should look for?

- Anthony in Reading, Pennsylvania The four-wheel drive systems in these vehicles are not deeply complicated but if a shop cannot see the issue when it is in their shop they will not have anywhere to start looking. The four-wheel drive uses an electric shift motor on the transfer case which is also a feedback sensor to the 4x4 module. If that sensor fails it cannot tell where the motor is, and it will act like yours. This is just one possibility and is quite common. A shop will scan the system for codes and if any are related to the shift motor and no wiring issues are found we often start there. Other items like the shift module can be problematic or the electronic coupler and its wiring on the front axle. These areas should also be checked closely for failed parts.

-Richard in Kalamazoo, Michigan The first thing we do is make sure it is in good shape going in which you have done. Fill up the fuel tank to prevent rust and make sure to add the proper amount of fuel stabilizer with rust protection additive.

Change the oil if not done already and drive the vehicle for over half hour to burn off any moisture in the oil then park it. Once cool, fog the cylinders with fogging oil and drain the carburetor. Disconnect the battery put jack stands under the frame to take pressure off the springs and tires. We also like to seal the exhaust and intake to prevent rodents from entering. Ask you local shop for more details.
