Break your own rules -By Harvey Mackay My friend Sam is an avid golfer. He plays every chance he gets. He also makes a practice of working out at the gym on weekends, and prefers to get an early start there.

O n e Saturday, the forecast called for a warm and sunny morning with heavy rain developing by noon. Still, Sam kept to his usual schedule and worked out in the morning, knowing his afternoon golf game would get rained out. When I asked him why he didn’t play golf first, he shrugged and said, “I never work out in the afternoon.”

“Seriously?” I asked. “You are allowed to break your own rules, you know.”

I suspect many of us have rules, or habits, that we follow without giving

any thought to why we adhere to them.

Rules bring order to life. They give us permission to do the things we want to do, and excuses not to do the things we don’t. They are handy.

And sometimes very limiting.

Simple rules, like “I need my morning coffee in order to be productive” or “I always pay my bills on time,” are fine. Others, like “I never make plans that I can’t break if I get a better offer” or “I need a couple drinks to unwind after work,” can be destructive.

Many of us also adhere to rules that jeopardize success at work. Do any of these apply to you?

Bad Rule #1: I always eat lunch at my desk to save money and get more work done. Break this one right now!

Find another way to economize and jump at the chance to network and hear the latest scoop on what is happening around the company. It needn’t be an everyday event – but shoot for once or twice a week.

Bad Rule #2: I don’t need to talk up my accomplishments. I’m sure my boss and everyone else knows what I’m capable of doing. You can take credit without bragging. Own your work, and be proud of it. Keep your boss, or whomever you are working with, up to date with emails or meeting updates.

And on the occasion that someone else takes credit for your efforts, be gracious but firm in reminding that person that you shared responsibility for the success.

Bad Rule #3: I never disagree with my boss. I go along with whatever he or she says. If you have information or a different idea that would make a project work better, share it. Your boss may or may not act on your suggestion, but you have demonstrated your willingness to step up when needed.

Bad Rule #4: I wait to be asked to join committees or take on extra work. Break this rule ASAP! Jump on opportunities

to stretch your limits or showcase your talents. Volunteer for a new challenge and increase your visibility within your organization.

Bad rule #5: I never mix business with pleasure. That’s like denying that you work with other people. Your work time is a big part of your life, and it should bring you pleasure. Getting together with co-workers away from the office is a great way to forge stronger relationships. It’s important to have friends outside your work life, but it is also important to see other dimensions of those you spend so many hours with.

That’s why many companies schedule regular company outings or volunteer opportunities.

Bad rule #6: I take myself very seriously. Please, please, please break this rule immediately. You can take your work seriously. You can take problems seriously. You can take your boss seriously. But you have to be able to laugh at yourself. You need to step back and see yourself as others see you.

You will do yourself a great favor by maintaining a sense of humor and letting go of the need to be in control.

As the old saying goes, rules were made to be broken. Better yet, review the rules you have imposed upon yourself and evaluate whether they are useful or destructive. You could actually be sabotaging your own success by adhering to bad rules.

Christmas Tree Memory -By Jan Klug In the rooms northwest corner was where the Christmas tree stood. Tree was given strength and height by a base tooled from hard wood.

Ample in the atmosphere, the lingering scent of pine hung. Long, silver tinsel shimmered on the limbs where it was strung.

Ornaments were far between. The viewers there knew no slight. Angel at the very peak enraptured their stricken sight.

Twisted red and green candles stood tall with an air of grace. Clipped on the firm, fresh branches, in their tarnished silver base.

Hark-the angels then did sing, in the flicker of their light. Seven souls sent their wishes into the stillness of the night.

In the minds every corner, twisted candles yet shine bright. Bestowing goodwill wishes as they did that Christmas night.

He was preceded in death by his father, John Landowski; wife, Doris Landowski; son, Jason Landowski; granddaughter, Brooke Landowski; mother-in-law, Rita Wensmann; brothers-in-law, Wayne Wensmann, Mark Wensmann, Joseph Wensmann and a cousin, Jim Koehn.

The honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren of Steven Landowski.

The casket bearers were his children: Chad, Shannon, Joshua, Sherry, Eric and Danielle.

S t e v e n Landowski, 60 year old resident of Swanville, MN, formerly of Burtrum, MN, died Wednesday, December 9 at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by his loving family. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 12 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Father John Odero officiating. The burial was held in the parish cemetery.

Steven Landowski was born April 26, 1955 in St. Cloud, MN to John and Arlene (Klein) Landowski. He attended school in Albany, MN. He worked various jobs after high school. Steve was united in marriage to Doris Wensmann on August 2, 1974 in St. Cloud, MN. The couple made their home in Browerville, MN where Steven and Doris farmed for fifteen years. The couple later moved to Plentywood, MT where Steve worked for M & T Repair as a mechanic. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling with Doris, singing, karaoke and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Sylvester J. “Ves” Stroeing, age 92 of Freeport, died peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, December 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m.

Thursday at the church.

Sylvester John Stroeing was born November 8, 1923 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Anna (Buettner) Stroeing. He attended Country School south of Freeport through 7th grade. After school, Ves worked on various farms doing various jobs. On May 14, 1951 Ves married Anna Mae Wensmann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

They moved to St. Paul where Ves worked at Whirlpool. In 1960 they moved back to Freeport and took over his father-in-law’s business as a Standard Oil bulk agent until his retirement in 1985. Throughout his entire employment career, he worked as a mechanic at various shops. He resided in his home in Freeport for 54 years until May of 2015 when he moved to Parkview in Melrose.

He was a member of Sacred Heart

Reverend Walter Ambrose Bednark Father Walter Bednark, 98 year old resident of Melrose, MN, died Thursday, December 10 at the Melrose Hospital in Melrose, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 15 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN with The Most Reverend Donald Kettler presiding.

He was the son of Joseph and Mary Janey Bednark. Father Bednark attended public grade school and high school in Little Falls, MN. He continued his studies at Crosier College, Onamia, MN. He received his seminary training at Saint Paul Seminary, Saint Paul, MN. Father Bednark was ordained on May 31, 1947, at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, Saint Cloud, MN,

by The Most Reverend Joseph F. Busch. He celebrated his First Mass on June 8, 1947,

Ves enjoyed fishing with his buddies and family, coffee clutching at Charlie’s Café, gardening, lawn care, playing cards, woodworking including remodeling his house with son, Glenn and making various pieces of furniture for family and friends. Ves also made the rosary that is on display at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his children, Glenn (Bev) Stroeing of Alexandria, John (Sharon) Stroeing of New Ulm, Kathy (Ken) Luethmers of Freeport, Lori Ann (Mike) Pohlmann of Melrose, Lisa (Garron) Orton of Foley, and Amy Stroeing of Sauk Centre; 14 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren; special friend, Rose Pundsack of Melrose; brothers and sisters, Leora (Pete) Honer of St. Joseph, Vernon (Margie) Stroeing of Freeport, Marvin (Marlene) Stroeing of Freeport, and Rita (Fred) Stang of Minneapolis.

Ves was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Stroeing on April 5, 2000; son, Tim Stroeing on July 28, 1963; parents; brother and sisters, Wilfred Stroeing, Celestine Stroeing, Dorothy Stroeing, Mary Ellen Rosen, and Evelyn Voller.

Serving as casket bearers will be Eric Luethmers, Dan Luethmers, Brad Luethmers, Cari Altmann, Adam Stroeing, Jamie Pohlmann, Timothy Stroeing, and Heather Orton. Cross bearer will be Cole Stroeing and scripture bearer will be Chloe Orton. Readers will be Emily Orton and Craig Stroeing. Serving as honorary bearers will be Ves’s fishing buddies.

John H. Binsfeld

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of John Howard Binsfeld, age 62, of Holdingford, was held Monday, December 14 at the Church of All Saints-St. Hedwig.

Father Greg Mastey presided.

Burial followed in the St. Hedwig’s Cemetery. John died at home surrounded by his family, after a 3 1/2 year battle with stage 4 cancer.

John was born August 6, 1953, in Groton, Connecticut at a Naval Submarine Base Hospital to Arthur and Marjorie (Fernandez) Binsfeld. John grew up in a Naval military family, living in various areas of the United States including Connecticut, Brooklyn, NY, Key West, FL and Milwaukee, WI. John was a 1971 graduate of Holdingford High School. He spent much of his teen years helping at his family’s restaurants in Holdingford and Bowlus. After graduation John worked in many capacities managing restaurants, working in the offices at Polar Manufacturing, as a security guard and in the dairy industries. John was a member of the Merchant Marine on the ship “Charles M. Beagley” in 1974 and 1975. He married Deborah (Czech) Binsfeld on April 5, 1975 at St. Hedwig’s Church in Holdingford.

In 1982, John entered St. Cloud State University at the age of 29. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1989. Ten years later John graduated with a Master’s Degree in Information Resources/Human Resources from St. Cloud State University. John then worked at the St. Cloud Technical College, as a Reference Librarian and a Project Manager in partnership with the St. Cloud Technical College Transportation Faculty, which lead to a MNGREAT Award in 1999. From 1999-2001 John worked at Winona State University as a TeachNet Manager. In 2004-

2005, John worked as an AMERICORP VISTA volunteer, working with Holdingford Helping Hands and was instrumental in setting up the Rural Stearns Faith in Action Program, which he also served as a board member for many years.

In 2006, John began his doctorate in Psychology, and as a psychology student began teaching as an adjunct faculty at the Minnesota School of Business. In 2010 became an online professor at Upper Iowa University. John finished his doctoral dissertation on September 12, 2012, and graduated from Capella University, with a PH.D in Philosophy of Psychology in August, 2013. John taught at Upper Iowa until October 2015, when his cancer didn’t allow him to teach any longer.

John was a member of the church of All Saints-St. Hedwig’s, the American Psychological Association, and for many years a member of the Holdingford Commercial Club as a main street business owner. As a local entrepreneur John’s businesses included Gifties-N-Goodies, IRIS Productions, Binsfeld Gallery and rental units.

John had a passion for painting, especially charcoals, which he began at a very young age. John’s greatest loves were teaching, music, (playing instruments and singing) as well as reading, building and designing things, but most of all spending time with his children and grandson.

John is survived by his wife Deborah of 40 years; his children Gregory, San Francisco, CA; Michelle Kiley Little Falls; grandson Grant Kiley; his father Arthur Binsfeld, Richmond; his brothers and sisters Rebecca (Jim) Stanoch, Holdingford; Dawn Marie (Jay) Brown, Paynesville; James (Jennifer) Binsfeld, Paynesville; and Thomas (Kris) Binsfeld, Cold Spring.

John was preceded in death by his mother Marjorie Binsfeld, his sister Barbara Binsfeld, his grandparents Nick and Alice Binsfeld, Ed and Minnie Fernandez, and his uncle Neal Fernandez.

John’s greatest love were for God, Family, Education and Community.

Jeanne Vander Heyden J e a n n e Vander Heyden, of Holdingford, MN, passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, MN. She was 68 years old.

Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am

on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Isle with Rev. Paul Brown.

Memorial Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Inurnment will be in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Isle.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, D e c e m b e r 14, 2015 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Avon for Lorraine A. Himsl, age 87, of Avon.

Lorraine passed away peacefully on December 11, 2015 at St. Benedict’s Center in St. Cloud with family by her side. Reverend Blane Wasnie, OSB officiated. Entombment took place in St. Benedict’s Parish Cemetery.

Lorraine was born August 7, 1928 in St. Anthony, Minnesota to the late Joseph and Gertrude (Ostendorf) Cherne. She married Amor Joseph Himsl on April 19, 1949 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Lorraine was a loving wife of 63 years and a dedicated mother who worked alongside Amor on their farm in the Avon/Collegeville area. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Parish.

Lorraine enjoyed spending time in her gardens, quilting, baking, playing

the son of Jerome “Jerry” & Mary Ann (Bienek) Cichon. He grew up on a farm near Swanville and graduated from Swanville High School, Class of 1995. He attended St. Cloud Vo-Tec and received an ASE Certified Master Mechanic degree. He was currently employed with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He enjoyed working on cars, woodworking, watching movies, deer hunting, looking for a good bargain and playing with his dog, Keylo.

Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Kathy (Brian) Burgardt of Little Falls, Jim (Shannon) Cichon of Swanville, David Cichon of Little Falls; nieces and nephew, Kayla (Craig) Bohnsack, John Cichon, Dani and Niki Cichon; greatnieces, Addison and Emma Bohnsack and girl friend, Tina Malone of Wadena.

Man charged for sexually assaulting four minors A 54-yearold Randall man is being accused of sexually assaulting four victims under age 16 in Morrison County over a period of 15 years, court documents

Vernon Bob Hintz was charged Monday in Morrison County District Court with four felony counts of seconddegree criminal sexual conduct with a significant relationship with a minor under age 16 where multiple acts were performed. Each count has a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and/or a $35,000 fine.

According to the complaint filed against Hintz: • On Dec. 11, a victim under age 16 reported she was sexually assaulted by someone whom she had a significant relationship with, who was identified as Hintz.

A Morrison County social worker and an investigator took a statement from the victim, who said it started when she was 6. The victim said he sexually assaulted her a couple of times in the past week and he did it about 10 times

when she was 6.

• The investigator took a statement from Hintz who admitted to having sexual contact with a number of children under age 16, all of whom he had a significant relationship with. Hintz said he sexually assaulted a second victim when she was around age 16 and it happened about 20 times at her residence.

• Hintz admitted to sexually assault-

ing a third victim under age 16 that started about two years ago. He said it happened mainly in the victim’s bedroom.

He then admitted to assaulting a fourth victim under age 16 that happened a couple of times with the last time occurring six months ago.

• Investigators took statements from the third and fourth victim about the sexual assault that all occurred in Morrison County at the victims’ residences.

As the disease progressed and his health deteriorated his faith continued to grow. And as his faith grew so did his willingness to witness and he gained a boldness about sharing God’s grace. On one occasion he said, “Cancer brought me to my knees and I realized I had no control over my life.”

During a visit with one of his physicians he was asked, “Do you want to live a short time for God or a long time for nothing?” He responded by saying, “Whether I live a short time or a long time it will be for God. My life is in His hands.”

Shortly before his death his mother would walk into his room and ask, “David, are you still here?” Each time he would answer, “Yes, Mother. I’m still here.”

On the last day of his life she went into his room and asked, “David are you still here?” His reply that day was, “Yes, Mother, but not for much longer. I’m going home.” He looked around the room and said, “Mother, faith is a lighted room.”

Where does a faith like David’s come from? “God will redeem my life from the grave,” said the Psalmist, “he will surely take me to Himself.” It comes from faith in Christ.

David lived his life knowing he was ready to die.

A Closer Look at State Budget Surplus Now that media attention surrounding the state’s $1.87 billion budget surplus has subsided, questions are still being asked.

Namely, how is the Legislature going to spend all that money?

And, are residents going to get rebate checks in the mail? Well, it’s not that easy, and it won’t all get spent. And I don’t think you should hold your breath waiting for a check from the state accompanied by a note saying “thanks” for the use your money, interestfree.

First of all, the November forecast is just that, a projection of what the state checking account will look like at the end of the current two-year cycle, which ends June 30 of 2017. We had been rolling along on a streak of 14 consecutive months of above-forecast revenue coming into the state, and that’s what led to the projection of the large surplus. However, the latest actual numbers for the month of November marked the end of that streak as revenue coming in was $9 million below forecast. In the overall picture, that’s a relatively small number as it represents 0.6 percent less than projected. However, it does make one wonder if the booming state economy is slowing down. We in Greater Minnesota know full well that

the ag economy is contracting, and agriculture along with its related industries account for nearly 20 percent of the total state economy.

Falling gas prices have been given credit for boosting the economy as they give consumers more dollars to spend on other items. Those prices are still dropping, with signs at filling stations now proclaiming gas for a buck-eighty-nine. However, as the new year approaches and families need to make decisions about health insurance, I think that’s going to put a damper on discretionary spending. Premiums, for the most part, have taken significant increases, and folks are scrambling to keep those costs somewhat in check. Scaled back coverage, along with higher deductibles, are two of the strategies being used to hold down health care costs.

As far as my thoughts on the budget surplus, keep in mind that the actual number is around $1.2 billion because onethird of that higher number must be set aside in the budget reserve. The two main drivers that will account for most of these funds are transportation and a tax-relief bill. When the surplus was announced last month, Gov. Dayton said the gas tax increase, which he had earlier been insisting on, was dead. That should clear the way for the two aforementioned bills to get through the Legislature and become law.

I’ve been listening to you for a long time, and I don’t want to fall in the trap this year of paying outrageous prices for things just because I have waited until the last minute. Can you give me some tips on how to save on Christmas gifts and not overspend?

-Ali Dear Ali, My first piece of advice is for next year. Decide now how much you want to spend on Christmas gifts and then divide that number by 12. Set aside that amount each month starting in January, and then you won’t be in a panic when Christmas rolls around next year. Planning ahead always reduces stress when it comes to financial matters.

As for this year, my advice is to be aware of last-minute shopping traps.

Many stores understand that people start getting desperate as Christmas draws nearer, and their prices reflect that. Also, stay away from the malls. Some folks may think I’m un-American for saying that, but I don’t care. Our culture has become one of shoppers who run to the mall, pay 120 percent of retail for something, and think they got a bargain because there was a sign that said SALE hanging over the table.

Also, don’t be afraid to negotiate.

It may not be comfortable at first, but you can find some great deals if you’re willing to do two things: pay cash and walk away. Once you get in the habit of

approaching purchases this way it will become second nature—and fun!

Finally, there are great websites out there like eBay and coolsavings.com.

Thinking differently and changing your gift-buying behaviors may be a little tough at first, but trust me, it’s worth the effort. Merry Christmas, Ali!

But if you started hiring people or doing something year round, you’d probably need a formal business license.

Regarding the tax bill, one of the main features of the plan offered by the House is a state credit to help farmers cover their cost as it relates to school capital referendums. Currently all agricultural land is levied for capital costs, with the result being a much higher percentage of capital levies being paid by those who own ag land. The House proposal would not shift any of that burden to other taxpayers, but rather would have the state paying 50 percent of those capital referendum costs currently assessed to farm land.

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month

Freshman Jayna Johannes has been chosen as the November Student of the Month for grades 7-9. Jayna is the daughter of Steven and Shawna Johannes. Jayna is very active in school activities participating in volleyball grades 7-9, softball since the 7th grade, with plans to participate again this spring, and basketball since sixth grade. She is currently in band. She has been active in theatre since seventh grade and recently participated in the play this fall. Jayna is consistently on the Honor Roll. She has lettered in the play.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township December 7, 2015 These are unapproved minutes.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mike Rohe & Mary Ann Primus.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were any additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 2, 2015 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Mike made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included 7 claims numbered 2875 thru 2881 for a total of $7,862.41. These claims included an unpaid fire call and the purchase of township camera. Ray made the motion to send a letter to the property owner of the unpaid fire call before having it put on the property taxes. Mike made the second, motion carried.

Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Mail included a letter from SWCD thanking the Board for their input, an invitation to a Region 5 summit, and a letter from Rinke Noonan law firm about a wetland conference coming up in February.

Discussion on putting some monies into a certificate of Deposit before the year end. Mike made a motion to put $50,000 into a General Fund CD and $50,000 into a R&B CD. Ray made the second.

All in favor. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported the 450th St. stumps have been removed and cleaned up. A letter was sent to Chippewa Rd property owner that Ray had checked into the culvert situation and will follow up in the spring. Discussion of the Stearns Line Road: A representative from the Millwood Township board was present and discussion was had as to which township

takes care of the brushing and mowing on a shared road and whether something should be in writing. It was decided to leave things as they are with the township alternating maintenance for the road surface and each township taking care of their ditches (mowing, brushing, signs, etc.). Erv H. stated the terms now are from April to April with Millwood taking the odd years and Grey Eagle has the even years starting in April. Mary Ann will draw up a resolution for each Township to sign so that we have documentation of the agreement.

Additional agenda items: Mike attended this years’ fire board meeting on November 17th. Mike stated that the Fire Dept. is still dealing with a lot of repeat calls for falls.

Grey Eagle Township had 4 fire calls and 17 rescue calls for 2015.

Public Comment: None.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 p.m.

need for repairing the water washout from the roof off of the Rec Building. The Lion’s Club has offered to pay 1/3 of the cost provided that UBA pays 1/3 and the City pays the other 1/3.

Mel Larson made another chair cart and Merlin Koester built a table cart for the Rec Building.

The Council would like to thank each of them for their ideas and labor for building the carts and making the building run smoothly.

Unfinished Business: Barn, hen house and granary razing: Johnson presented two bids to raze the buildings on the City property located on West Walnut Ave. They are to remove all trees and brush and to contour the land to be planted. Thompson Excavating’s bid came in at $23,800, and Kieffer Contracting’s bid at $25,570.

Lange moved to approve the Thompson Excavating bid at $23,800; to pay $18,800 on completing of the razing of the building holding $5,000 until the project is complete on or before June 1, 2016 with the contractor billing the City, 2nd Maciej. Motion carried unanimously.

Region 5 Elected Officials Summit: Johnson expressed interest in attending the Region 5 Elected Officials Summit in Staples on Dec. 10th and directed Stevens to register him for the Summit.

City Hall Roof Repair: Stewart Johnson from Reis lumber showed Mayor Johnson how the roof cap is peeled back towards the north creating leakage on the City Hall building. The council requested Johnson to get bids for new a steel roof.

Tobacco Licenses: These are provided by Morrison County. The City does not need issues these.

Enterprise Funds: Stevens present figures on the City’s Enterprise Funds, explaining the need for an increase in the Sewer Fund as well as the Refuse & Recycling Fund.

Lange moved to approve an increase of $ 5.00 per sewer account per month as of January 1, 2016, 2nd by Maciej. Motion carried unanimously.

Holiday Lighting Contest: Westrich moved to hold a Holiday Lighting Contest for residents inside the City limits with the first place winner to get $150 in Upsala Bucks, second place to receive $100 in Upsala Bucks, and third place to receive $50 in Upsala Bucks; judging will be the evening of Dec. 21, 2015; winners will be posted on the City’s website; Judges being: Joan Olson Robert Maciej and Michelle Stevens, 2nd by Lange. DNR Reminder: Avoid Early Ice, Wear Life Jackets on Cold Water With daytime temperatures still climbing above freezing even in the northern parts of the state, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding outdoor enthusiasts to stay clear of early ice and use extreme caution when recreating on dangerously cold water.

Although some locations in the northern and western regions of the state were reporting ice formation at the end of November, the recent fluctuations in weather have led to degraded ice conditions and warnings from public safety officials to stay off the ice until at least 4 inches of new, clear ice is present.

“No fish is worth the risk of going through thin ice,” said DNR conservation officer Lt. Adam Block. “At this point, it is going to take several consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures before enough solid ice has formed to support foot traffic, and even longer before snowmobilers should be on the ice.”

Last winter, five people died after breaking through the ice, including one toddler. No deaths have been reported yet this winter, although several emergency ice rescues have taken place in the last few weeks.

Block stressed that once ice formation picks up again, it will be important to stay vigilant about safety on the ice, since conditions can be unpredictable and vary greatly even on the same body of water.

“In addition to checking conditions locally and being prepared with an ice safety kit, anyone recreating on hard water should be wearing a life jacket,” Block said. “A life jacket is the one piece of equipment that exponentially increases your odds of not drowning from cold water shock, hypothermia or exhaustion should you fall through the ice.”

Open water danger The lack of ice cover means many bodies of water in the state still have open water accessible to boaters. However, late season anglers, boaters and paddlers are cautioned that a life jacket is an absolute must on cold water.

“A fall into extremely cold water can incapacitate you within seconds,” said Debbie Munson Badini, DNR boat and water safety outreach coordinator. “Air

temperatures have been relatively mild for December, but don’t let that deceive you.

Water temperatures are dangerously cold across the entire state, which means it’s more important than ever to wear that life jacket.”

State statistics show that one-third of boating fatalities typically occur during the “cold water season,” and that in the vast majority of cases the cause of death is drowning due to not wearing a life jacket.

So far in 2015, nine boaters have died on cold water, and 18 total boating fatalities have been reported. The last time state boating fatalities surpassed 18 deaths was in 2005, when 23 occurred.

“The 2015 boating season was excellent in terms of the number of days boaters have been able to get out on the water. But with a longer season came an increase in boating deaths, and we’re regrettably looking at a 10-year high,” Munson Badini said.

“Ten of the 18 deaths involved male boaters 20-60 years old who sadly drowned while not wearing a life jacket. This is a continuing and troubling trend that will only plateau or reverse if boaters in that high-risk demographic choose to put safety first by putting on their life jacket.”

General ice safety guidelines No ice can ever be considered “safe ice,” but following these guidelines can help minimize the risk: • Carry ice picks, rope, an ice chisel and tape measure.

• Check ice thickness at regular intervals – conditions can change quickly.

• Bring a cell phone or personal locator beacon.

• Don’t go out alone; let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.

• Always wear a life jacket on the ice (except when in a vehicle).

• Before heading out, inquire about conditions and known hazards at a local bait shop or resort.

The minimum ice thickness guidelines for new, clear ice are: • 4 inches for ice fishing or other activities on foot.

• 5 inches for a snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle.

JOB DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: SHOVEL SNOW, RUN SNOWBLOWER, RUN SNOW PLOW WHEN NEEDED, MOWING LAWN WITH BOTH RIDING MOWER AND PUSH MOWER, WEED TRIMMING OF PARKS AND CEMETERY, PAINTING CURBS AND FIRE HYDRANTS AS DIRECTED, PERFORMING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT, CLEANING OF THE LIBRARY, AND COLLECTING TRASH FROM CITY PARKS AND STREET RECEPTACLES.
