Santa knows what’s good for business -By Harvey Mackay The holidays are full of tradition and are a time to gather with family and friends. But no matter if you are a parent or a child, everyone recognizes the big guy in the red suit – Santa Claus.

Business can learn a lot from Santa.

Santa is full of holiday spirit.

He is always the life of the party. He’s jovial and always in a good mood. Santa is forever positive. If you think positively, you will be more inclined to speak positively. Your positive words will spur you to positive actions.

If you get used to behaving in a positive way, you will form good habits. And your habits will help define the kind of person you are.

That will lead you to your destiny: what you will eventually become as a person. Positive thinking has no negatives.

Santa’s charm is unquestioned. In a perfect world, a course on personality development should be part of a business school curriculum.

Why? Because no matter how advanced our technology becomes, personal interaction often seals the deals. Charm is what you bring out in other people because you are genuinely interested. It’s a life lesson, not just a business strategy.

Santa has a great sense of humor. He appreciates a good story and has a jolly ho, ho, ho. He even laughs at his own jokes because he knows laughter is the best medicine. It makes people happy and links us together. Humor and laughter strengthen our immune system, boost our energy by destroying boredom, and keep stress at bay. A good sense of humor helps to overlook the unbecoming, understand

the unconventional, tolerate the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected and outlast the unbearable.

Santa is a giver. He is active in every community because he is everywhere. We’ve all heard the old adage that you can’t buy happiness. Well, it turns out that’s not exactly true. You actually can buy happiness – when you spend your money or your time on others. A great way to feel happy is to help other people by getting involved in volunteer work that supports your community. During this traditional time for giving, organizations are clamoring for all kinds of help. Sharing precious time may seem burdensome, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Santa is a great listener. Whenever I see Santa in shopping centers, he is patiently listening to children tell him the same gift ideas over and over and over. Santa knows you can win more friends with your ears than your mouth. Listening is a critical skill in everyone’s life. Hearing is one of the body’s five senses, but listening is an art. Being a good listener can make or break a career. Your success could hinge on whether you have mastered the skill of listening.

Santa is kind. Kindness is one of the strongest of all virtues. When you are good to others, you are best to yourself. Kindness is the oil that takes the friction out of life. And the best part of all, everyone can be kind – if they decide to be. Kindness is not weakness. Quite the opposite, kindness demonstrates a basic decency and respect that reflects a willingness to get along even when you disagree.

Santa maintains great relationships with his customers. Even when he can’t deliver exactly what they order, he tries very hard to satisfy their wishes. It isn’t easy for his elves to make every item or fulfill every request, but he’ll never stop trying. And he has been known to offer options to soften the blow.

Good salespeople know to do that too.

Santa treats everyone with dignity and respect. He is patient with crying babies and does his best to put frightened children at ease. Kids love Santa because he makes them feel important. A minutes-long encounter reinforces their faith in the goodness of people.

In business, customers are much the same.

They like to know that they are important and will be treated respectfully.

Santa always tells the truth. Sometimes Santa just can’t do what is asked of him, but he honestly explains that there are some things that even Santa can’t do. Businesses that are honest with their customers may disappoint briefly, but people appreciate that honesty.

And finally, Santa respects deadlines because he knows he has to satisfy his customers by Dec. 25.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Yesterday's School Bus

Seeing school buses today is a common occurrence. First, there are a lot of them and they all are painted to look alike. The buses may travel great distances to pick up students from other school districts under a program called “open enrollment.” Some towns report having buses from 5 different school districts traveling through their town to pick up students. This probably causes students to spend more time on the school bus, cutting into the educational time.

However, as one who did ride the bus in earlier times, there are also some varied discussions and educational opportunities on the bus, which may not be taught in the classroom.

Gone are the days when students in the rural country schools depended on their parents or their own energies to get to school. Gone are the times when a neighbor took his kids to school with the team and farm wagon and gave a ride to the kids along the way. Some of their trips to school have been reportedly over two miles and required going up hill both ways or in some cases having to go through a swamp to get there. Yes, it was different from today. My uncle went to high school 4 miles from home and would ski there whenever possible.

The larger consolidated schools offered bus service for the kids. The bus service originally consisted of a team of horses pulling an oblong box with a bench along the inside walls. The box was placed on a 4-wheeled farm wagon.

The box was a wood frame and usually covered with black painted tin. The identification of the school was usually painted on the side, so the “bus” must have been owned by the school district. The school bus drivers were paid by the school district.

Since there was no insulation in these old school buses, there was usually a wood stove attached to the bus to offer some heating in the colder winter days. The driver would start

the fire and one of the most dependable riders would fire up as needed. This was similar to the home heating system, no thermostat, if it's cold, fire up. If its too hot move away from the stove.

A lesson in common sense!

Some of these horse drawn school buses were used until the 1930's when the roads improved and a motor driven bus could be used.

The new buses had a heater, but it only heated the seats toward the front.

For those of us that rode the bus years ago, I'm certain that you have memories of some interesting bus riding experiences. The roads were improved, but in spring, the low spots in the road were covered with water. The snow plows plowed the roads for cars, but not the big bus. Frost boils created a sloppy trap for a front bus tire. Icy hills were sometimes the cause of sliding backwards and dropping a rear wheel in the ditch. Tire chains were installed when the conditions required, but there was usually a short length of chain that would bang against the fender, causing one to think the rear end was falling off. And then the spring came and the whole road was a muddy, greasy 6 inch deep mess, which caused the bus to jerk and sway, causing the riders to have a very exciting ride.

I think we should say a word of thanks to the bus drivers for their skill and patience for their contribution to helping us get educated.

were spread out and nailed to the cross. His life started in peace but ended in brutal agony.

Obituaries

Goldie E. Miland

Goldie E. Miland, age 92 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held Monday, December 13 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.

Goldie Elaine Dettler was born April 4, 1929 in Pillsbury, Minnesota, and was raised in Swanville. She married Raymond Gamradt on November 16, 1947, where they had a farm southwest of Sauk Centre. Following Ray’s death in 1954, Goldie moved into town with their two young sons.

Goldie married Kenneth Miland on January 19, 1958. Together they raised 10 children and, over 31 years, fostered 46 infants, children, and adults with special needs.

Survivors include her children, Bill (Gwen) Gamradt, John Gamradt, Lynne (BJ) Merten, Randy (Lynn) Miland, Bob (Sandee) Miland, David (Randy) Miland, Kim Miland, Byron (Jody) Miland, and Tami (Randy) Ruegemer; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; sister, Janet Koehn; and many, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Goldie was preceded in death by both husbands, Ray Gamradt in 1954 and Ken Miland in 1999; parents, Rudy and Hilda Dettler; sister, Lorna Koehn; and brother, Ervin Dettler.

She had a beautiful life filled with family.

And for anybody who knew her, you were part of her family, whether you knew her for 5 minutes or 50 years. She’s at peace now and will always be remembered.

Aloys H. “Red” Meyer, age 92 of Meire Grove, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, December 10, 2021 in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, December 16 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Aloys Herman Meyer was born June 26, 1929 in Meire Grove, Minnesota to Aloys C. and Elizabeth (Nietfeld) Meyer. He completed his education at St. Paul's School of Agriculture.

Red served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Arlene Rausch on August 9, 1958 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. The couple farmed near Meire Grove until their retirement. Red was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Knights of Columbus, and the Melrose American Legion Post 101.

Faith, family, and farming were the most important things in Red’s life. He enjoyed socializing, playing cards, spending time outdoors, and especially spending time with his loving wife and family. Red had a wonderful sense of humor and his laughter was contagious. He will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his children, Judy (Steve) Croegaert of Willmar, Sharon (Don) Kluempke of Melrose, Shirley (Randy) Willoughby of Holdingford, Karl (Geri) Meyer of Meire Grove, Marvin (Rita) Meyer of Meire Grove, Glen (Julie) Meyer of Freeport, Carrie (Tim) Kerfeld of St. Rosa, and Kay Kahler of Little Falls; 25 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; brothers, Arnold (Mary Ann) Meyer of Sauk Centre, David (Jane) Meyer of Sauk Centre, Bernard Meyer of Alexandria, and sister-in-law, Jan Meyer of Melrose.

Red was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene Meyer on June 12, 2017; parents; sisters, Anna Meyer and Marcella Lawler; brothers, James, Polycarp, Alban, and Leo Meyer; son-inlaw, Gary Kahler; and other in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Roland E. Musolf

Roland E. Musolf, age 78 of Sauk Centre, passed away on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. He was a doting husband, proud father, caring brother, and great friend. Roland was a dedicated veteran and faithful patriot.

A prayer service will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, December 17 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre with Deacon Larry Lawinger officiating.

Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Inurnment will be held at a later date. The service will be videotaped and placed on the funeral home website after the service.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.

Roland Earl Musolf was born May 11, 1943 in Dodge Center, Minnesota to Earl and Lucille (Robertson) Musolf. He grew up in Rochester, Minnesota, the oldest of four siblings. Hard working in his youth, he was active in many sports and a proud student of the Rochester John Marshall Rockets.

After a brief stint at Bemidji State, Roland enlisted in the Navy, serving on the naval ships U.S.S. Talladega and the U.S.S. Parsons during the Vietnam War and was a proud Shellback. He returned from the war and to Minnesota where he graduated with honors from the University of Minnesota Duluth.

“The Moose Man” had a one-of-a-kind personality rooted in love, respect, and honor. Roland was a proud family man that touched many lives with his joy, hard work, and loyalty. He experienced many life lessons, enjoyed endless fun, and cherished memories that he shared. Later in life, he married his wife and best friend, Sherry, through deep love and happiness. They later retired on Big Sauk Lake.

He found great joy and despair in the ups and downs of Minnesota sports and was a proud Minnesota Vikings ticket holder for 29 years. Roland had a passion for U.S. and world history, traveling the country, and enjoyed visiting many countries abroad. He shared many jokes, quotes or sayings, tracked and filed his family ancestry and records.

Roland loved living on the lake, fishing, hunting elk and deer, working in his garage and became a handyman who loved to fix things, taking many pictures, and treasured his family dogs. He loved having parties, dancing, music, and playing games.

Roland also enjoyed reading and jotting down notes, keeping a journal of his many experiences and life’s observations.

Roland had an over 30 year distinguished professional career in sales traveling the country with Motorola, Bemis, and Volm Bag Company, making Salesman of the Year with each company. He was a proud 24-year member of the honor guard, American Legion, V.F.W., and the Sauk Centre American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Musolf; children, Jeff (Tracy) Musolf, Julia (Royce) Buford, and Jay (Renee) Musolf; step-sons, Jay Storie and Joe Storie; grandchildren, Nevaeh and Sadie Storie, Marianne Shoen Storie, Maxwell and Geneva Musolf, Ava and Bennett Musolf; sisters, Regina (LeRoy) Timm and Brenda (Kenny) Prochaska; sisters-in-law, Marcy (Ken) Rogahn and Janet (Mark) Jones; brother-in-law, Tom Solz; honorary sister-inlaw, Wanda (Jim) Storie; and many loving family and friends.

Roland was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Brad; and sister-in-law, Holly.

Serving as casket bearers will be Tom Solz, Keith Weigel, Jim Storie, Nevaeh Storie, Maxwell Musolf, and Ava Musolf.

Mary Ann Boeckers, age 75 of Sauk Centre, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the CentraCare Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at a later date.

Mary Ann Ida Boeckers was born November 22, 1946 in Melrose, Minnesota to Leander and Amalia (Eibensteiner) Boeckers. She worked in sewing at Fingerhut in Sauk Centre, HEI in Sauk Centre, Hutchinson Technologies (HTI), and Koelln Homes. Mary Ann liked playing cards, especially 500 Rummy, Texas Hold’em, cribbage, and Bar Rummy. She liked doing puzzles, Suduko, playing BINGO, taking trips, bowling, taking cruises in the country, and enjoyed morning coffee with her coffee clutch friends. Mary Ann cherished the time she spent with her nieces and nephew; Mary Ann was like a big sister to them. Mary Ann would take them to movies, restaurants, and to various parks to feed the ducks. She truly loved spending time with them.

Survivors include her brother, Willie (Janet) Boeckers of Elrosa; sister, Darlene (Wayne) Hallermann of Sauk Centre; nieces, Janell Boeckers (significant other, Tom Langer), Emily (Andy) Heying of Elrosa, and Maria (Gerry) Wolbeck of Paynesville; and great-nephew and great-niece, Jackson and McKenna Wolbeck.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Gene Boeckers; and nephews, Tony Hallermann and Michael Boeckers.

Burial was in the Holy Cross Parish Cemetery in North Prairie, MN. Denise Violet Staneart was born on April 20, 1956 in St. Cloud, MN to the late Emerson and Dorothy (Beack) Staneart. After Dorothy passed away Emerson remarried Mamie Perry. Denise attended school in Sartell and after graduation, she was united in marriage to Donald Hurdt on June 14, 1975 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie.

Denise is survived by her husband, Donnie; children, Mike (April), JohnPaul (Stacy), Laura Posterick (Mark), and Danny (Pam); 8 grandchildren, Lacy, Lili, Hailey, Justin, Keeley, Kyson, Derek and Amber; great-grandchildren, Gabe, Allie, Elias, and Caleb; sister, Jean Folkerts (Ron); brothers, Bruce Staneart (Barb), Richard Staneart (Ellen); step-sisters, Ruth Brown (Roger), Linda Guinn (Don), Sue Stang (Jeff), and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Brian D. Lange, 55 year old resident of Upsala, MN passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN with Father David Grundman officiating. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Friday and from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Saturday all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala, MN. Brian David Lange was born on September 26, 1966 to Ralph & Audrey (Stenholm) Lange at North Memorial Hospital, Robbinsdale, MN. He attended school in Upsala where he graduated Valedictorian of the class of 1985. After high school, Brian attended St. Cloud State University majoring in Computer Programming. During that same time, he started a job at Stearns Bank Upsala. In the 14 years at this job he was a teller, loan officer and eventually the bank manager. On May 30, 1998, Brian was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Beth) Heim. In September 2001 Brian started his job at Woodcraft Industries making cabinet doors. He enjoyed making things with his hands. Together Brian and Beth help raise his niece, Brianna Lange. In January 2004 the union was blessed with a daughter, Jessica. Brian served his community for over 10 years on the city council. He also was a past member of the Upsala First Response, where he played a role in obtaining the rig still currently used. Brian was also an active member of the Upsala Fire Department, serving as a Captain for the past 6 years. A member of St. Mary's Church in Upsala, over the years he gave of his time on the parish council, as a lector, Eucharistic Minister and choir member.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 23 years, Beth; daughter, Jessica (at home); niece/ daughter, Brianna (Cooper Scott) of Willmar; brother, Greg; granddaughter, Arya of Willmar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph & Audrey; infant brothers, Ricky & Gerald; infant sister, Jessica; several aunts & uncles.

Michelle is survived by her husband, Eugene, Holdingford; her father, Ralph (Arlene) Clement, Avon; her children; Traci Ann Brenner, St. Cloud; Kayla Marie (Ben) Christen, Albany; Amanda Lynn Ostendorf, St. Cloud and Alexia Mary Ostendorf, St. Cloud. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jaylen Ostendorf, Caleb Brenner, Cara Brenner, Chloe Brenner, Mason Christen, Kash Christen, Aaliyah Ostendorf, Kam Christen; her sisters; Jeny (Mike) Meyer, St. Joseph; Becky (Tom) Klein, Fargo, Chris Rose, Fargo; and her furry companion, Minnie.

December 14, 2021: At approximately 3:03 p.m., received a report of a one-vehicle rollover on Great River Road, south of 170th Avenue, approximately six miles southeast of Bowlus, MN in Two Rivers Township.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Dylan Mckenzie from Bowlus, MN was traveling south on Great River Road.

Mckenzie’s vehicle hit some slush on the road causing him to lose control and roll the vehicle. Mckenzie was transported to St. Gabriel’s Hospital by Mayo Clinic Ambulance with minor injuries.

The Morrison County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Bowlus First Response Team and Mayo Clinic Ambulance.

Dear Motor Medics, With gas prices constantly changing but always on the slow creep upwards overall, I want to save as much fuel as possible. I have been researching kits to burn hydrogen in my car and other ways to increase my mileage with additives to the tank that are supposed to increase efficiency. Do you guys know which kit is the best one out there and how well they work? Is it something I can do myself at home? What about the additives to the tank?

When the cost of fuel gets a sudden spike, you will see more of these kits on the market and offers of pills and additives claiming to be magic fixes for fuel mileage. If there was such a thing it’s likely that the manufacturers would be making a good version of it to get their overall fuel ratings up. Not to say that someone won’t come up with something that does the job at a price that makes it worthwhile but for now we have not seen anything. It’s completely up to you to research these products and make a final decision but we very strongly recommend that you consult with your own local mechanic before making any purchase.

He said I was overfilling it and need to stop when the pump clicks the first time. The problem is it clicks off when it’s only half full and you must fill it really slow or keep clicking it. This is the way my dad had to fill it for the past couple years. What is this guy talking about and why does it click off so soon?

-Mark in Parachute, Colorado Dear Mark, The guy is right. The tank is designed to shut off the pump by backing fuel up the filler tube when it’s full. If you overfill the tank by forcing fuel into it after it shuts off it will spill over into the emissions system canister damaging it. You and your dad may not have caused what is going on now. While overfilling can cause damage to the emissions system and result in the premature shut off, a failed tank vent valve can also cause this even without canister damage. Have the emissions system checked and if it is a valve, they can replace it so you can fill the tank faster but remember to stop when it clicks.

The family of Bev Johnson would like to express our sincere thanks to our family and friends for the love and support shown to us during Bev's final journey and the passing of our wonderful wife, mom and grandma. Thank you for the prayers, memorials, cards, food and flowers. Thank you to those who stopped to visit in Bev's final days. A huge thank you to Mavis Buker for the beautiful service, Tina Gunderson, those who brought food and helped in the kitchen during the wake and the ladies of Gethsemane for the lunch following her service.

A special thank you to the CentraCare Hospice Team, medical staff and doctors at the St. Cloud Hospital and Coborn Cancer Center, and the St. Otto's staff on the 3rd floor for the wonderful care given to Bev.

A huge and special thank you to Kyle LeMieur and the staff at Shelley Funeral Chapel for helping us through this extremely difficult time.

Grey Eagle Township • December 6, 2021 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, Mike Rohe and Erv Herdering. Several members of the community and from Little Falls Township were also present.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Larry Bebus asked to be included. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda as amended. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: Ray made the motion to accept the November 1, 2021 minutes. Mike made the second. All in favor.

Motion carried.

Greg Smith from Little Falls Township was in attendance to explain the importance of the Township having a Comprehensive Plan. He spoke about the Little Falls Township Plan and offered to help Grey Eagle Township create a plan, stating that the County would be requiring one from all townships soon. Grey Eagle Township has a Comprehensive Plan that was created in 2003.

Larry Bebus was also present to represent BBL Association, he stated they would like to see the BBL access closed during the summer months, at least during the week.

He spoke of the importance of preventing aquatic invasive species from entering the lake.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included claims 3630-3638 for a total of $8,894.67. Ray made the motion to pay the claims, Mike made the second. All in favor, Motion carried. Mail included advertising for an air cleaning device and information from the Todd County Broadband meeting.

Ron suggested a new CD for this year. Mike made a motion to move $50,000 from R&B to a new CD. Ray made the second. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported on some of the brushing he had done and should be almost done. Some discussion on 311th. Ray also reported Erv had replaced a culvert on 130th East.

Additional agenda item: Fire Board meeting was held November 23, Mike attended and reported- no news, this was advisory meeting.

Resolution to designate the Township Hall as our polling place was read and Ray made the motion to approve. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:30 pm.
