• Believe that together we can do anything.

• Invent.

That about sums up any doubts they had about what they were capable of doing! About the only rule that seems to be missing is “reinvent the wheel.”

Innovation seems to move at the speed of light in business and education. New products and methods pop up almost every day. Your phone/ computer/television is outdated as soon as you take it out of the box because of new systems constantly being developed. Your car can essentially drive itself. Your house can tell you whether the lights are on when you are across the ocean. Innovation affects every phase of our lives.

I’m way beyond wondering why I didn’t think of that myself – I’m just grateful that someone had the courage to tackle a seemingly impossible idea that made my life much easier.

Innovation is central to every organization’s growth. As a manager, it’s important to develop an environment where it will flourish. If you are working on your own, give yourself the gift of time to let your plans simmer.

Not all innovations have to be technical or expensive. Let me share a couple of innovations that we now take for granted.

When automobiles first came into common use, there were few roads and none of them were striped to denote lanes. When Dr. June Carroll, who lived in the California desert, made house calls, she couldn’t tell what side of the desert road she was on, especially at night. She bought a brush and a can

of white paint, and painted a line down the center of the road as a guide to other travelers. The California Highway Commission adopted her innovation for all the roads in California.

A Florida citrus grower lost 85 percent of his trees in a tropical hurricane. Instead of being discouraged, he formulated a plan. Before the storm, his trees had been planted far apart because land was cheap and he had plenty of space. But when he replanted after the storm, he put them close together, almost like a hedge, to protect each other. His yield was twice what it was before the storm destroyed most of his trees.

Where do you find inspiration for innovative ideas? Some days, ideas pop into your head without any effort at all. Other days you probably feel like you’re digging for them at the bottom of the ocean. Don’t get frustrated.

When you are looking to develop a new concept, there are some steps that will make it easier.

• Gather information. Do some research into whatever you’re trying to develop. Don’t worry about solutions right now; just immerse yourself in the subject. Put your concept into simple language that won’t limit your scope.

• Mix everything together. Look for underlying assumptions, common concepts and roads not taken. Don’t force any ideas, but take notes on anything that stands out.

• Brainstorm. Invest some time in generating more ideas from the information you’ve processed. Let ideas flow freely, because sometimes parts of ideas can blend together to lead to an even better result.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Christmas Memories

I’m sure many of you will remember “Christmas Bags.”

They were those paper bags which were given to kids at Christmas time.

The church would award the kids with a bag after they had said their “Christmas piece” in front of all of that scary audience on Christmas Eve. The bags were filled with about two cups of unsalted peanuts in the shell and a fruit item, either an orange or an apple. As we grew older and had received these bags in previous years, we learned that if the fruit was an orange, you didn’t leave the bag sit at home under the tree for a few days, since the moisture from the fruit would make the peanuts damp and they wouldn’t shell well.

Christmas Bags usually were also part of the gift from the grandparents.

They sometimes contained mixed nuts and maybe a cellophane package of hard candy including some multicolored ribbon candy and those miniature pillows with green, white and yellow stripes. There also may be some dark red, round candies, which were soft in the middle. They were especially good, since you could bite down on them and they would crush, giving an explosion of sweetness in your mouth. The inside of these candies was a mixture of raspberry flavored gush that really didn’t taste very good.

Along with the bags, there usually was either a couple of dollars, an item of clothing or if Grandma was darning prior to Christmas, there may be a pair of homemade wool socks. These socks were mildly appreciated at that time, but if we were to get a pair of them today, we would be really excited.

Being kids, we were more

interested in receiving toys, games or items which would help us pretend we were cowboys, frontiersmen or space travelers. The girls liked clothing items with fringe, dolls, jewelry and makeup items, seems their desires haven’t changed much through the years.

The Christmas gifts at home were usually one toy item and needed shirts, pants, socks mittens and underwear, which had come from Sears Roebuck or “Monkey Wards” during the weeks before Christmas and suddenly appeared under the tree as items left by Santa.

Mother usually made several different kinds of cookies and candies for the Christmas holidays. The fruit cake had been started just after the previous Christmas, wrapped in foil and placed in an upstairs back room to mature. Some of the loaves had parts missing, since the kids needed to taste the loaves at various times throughout the summer months, to see how they were maturing.

Herring was an item, which was usually part of the Christmas menu.

These special items were not purchased as a fully prepared ready to eat product.

The herring came in a one gallon jar.

They were preserved in salt water and included the heads and everything else except the intestines. They needed to be soaked to eliminate some of the salt, washed, fins and heads removed and cut into one inch diameter chunks. The herring was then placed into a pickling solution along with lots of onions, sliced dill pickles and allowed to set for a few days. I remember many suppers of herring and fried potatoes. Sure brings back fond memories.

• Take risks. New ideas usually involve failure. There’s no guarantee that everything you try will succeed, but sometimes you have to see what doesn’t work in order to see what will be successful.

• Share your idea. Run it past someone you trust for feedback. An outside perspective can help you shape and mold your idea into something you can put into action.

• Expect some frustration.

Remember the adage: “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” You will stub your toe, maybe even fall flat on

your face, a time or two before you are satisfied with your results. Innovation isn’t instant – it can take years.

Read Down Fines Program at Libraries “Read Down Your Fines” will take place Monday, Dec. 19-Saturday, Dec. 31 at all 32 branches of the Great River Regional Library.

This event is for children and teens younger than 17 who are unable to borrow library materials because of outstanding fines. It gives them the opportunity to regain library privileges just by reading at the library.

Since the program began in 2013, 924 children have taken part. Individuals record time spent reading at the library on coupons available at the library desk. They are allowed to read materials of their choice, but it must be physical print materials such as a book or magazine. For each 15 minutes spent reading, they eliminate $1 in fines. Parents will be allowed to read down the fines of their young children by reading to them in the library. Procedures at each library may vary. Minors who want to read down

their fines should speak with library staff.

Read Down can only be applied to fines for late return of materials. It can’t be applied to fines or processing fees for lost and damaged items. The program recognizes that children are not always at fault when materials are returned late.

The program is also a response to research that says children who read often and are library users are more likely to be successful in the classroom.

Read Down Your Fines is totally paid for through public donations. The average fine paid off is approximately $5. An average of 24 branches have patrons taking part each time the program is offered.

GRRL provides library services at 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. It provides Central Minnesota residents with nearly 1 million books, CDs and DVDs, 250 public computers, programming and information services.

Obituaries Bonita L. “Bonnie” Hughes B o n i t a L. “Bonnie” Hughes, age 76 of Melrose, died on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, surrounded by her family after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Thursday, December 15, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating.

Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery following the lunch.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Bonita Lucille Boutain was born June 28, 1940 in Benson, Minnesota to William and Gladys (Swanson) Boutain.

She graduated from Benson High School in 1958. She attended the University of Minnesota and graduated with a Home Economics Teaching Degree in 1961.

She married Francis Hughes on June 29, 1963 at St. Malachy’s Church in Clontarf, Minnesota. She owned and operated Hughes Real Estate and Appraisal Services in Melrose from 1975 until retiring in 2002. Bonnie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, past president of the Central Minnesota Chapter of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraiser from 1995-1997, Central Chapter Appraiser of the Year in 1996, State Director from 1998 to 2000, and State Appraiser of the Year in 2000.

married Jacqualine Palumbo on July 19, 1958 in St. Paul. Gerald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He owned and operated Blonigen and Sons, and later worked for TKI Incorporated for 12 years. Gerald served on the Board of Directors and later became President of the St. Martin Bank from 1982-2012.

He was the first Fire Chief in St. Martin, played St. Nicholas in St. Martin for many years and played baseball and softball. Gerald loved to sing, garden, fish, spend time in nature and his dogs.

Survivors include his children, Kevin (Joan) Blongien, Kelly (Andrew) Swartzentruber; sister-in-law, Pat Blonigen; grandchildren, Amanda (Jason) Berg, Joshua (Trista) Klaphake, Cortney Minette, Kailee Schaeffer, Logan Swartzentruber, Trent and Travis Blonigen.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie (2011); siblings, Cyril Blonigen, Jerome Blonigen, Clarice Lanz, Franices Blonigen, Lorraine Klesney, Donna Mae Memke, Virgl Blonigen, Mary Lou Blonigen, and Charles Blonigen.

Rita E. Gerads, age 64 of Upsala, died Sunday, December 11, 2016, after a long hard battle with cancer, at her home in Upsala, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 14 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Rev. Cletus Connors, O.S.B. officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.

Rita Ellen Wedel was born December 3, 1952 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Wilbert and Alice (Meller) Wedel. She grew up and graduated from Albany High School in 1971. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University for two years before moving back home to help her mother after an electrical accident involving her father. She worked as an aide at the Albany Hospital before receiving her LPN degree at Brainerd Area Vocational Institution in 1977. She then went back to work at the Albany Hospital. On September 1, 1979, she married Arnold Gerads at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Rita left the hospital after two years to help Arnie on the farm. The couple retired from farming in 2011 and moved to Upsala.

James H. “Jim” Obermiller James H. “Jim” Obermiller, age 76 of Freeport, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at his home in Freeport, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. A private entombment will be in the parish cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church in Freeport.

James Henry Obermiller was born March 9, 1940 in Albany Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Arnold and Madeline (Groetsch) Obermiller.

Jim graduated from Albany High School in 1958 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was united in marriage to Irene Heidgerken on January 26, 1960 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.

He worked at Champion Paper Company and retired after almost 40 years. Jim and Irene also owned and operated the Corner Store in Freeport for nearly ten years.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed cutting grass at the Albany Golf Course.

Saturday, December 17, 2016 at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin, MN for Elvin “Smiley” Lieser, age 82, who died Tuesday at his home surrounded by his family. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Friday, December 16, 2016 at the St. Martin Parish Hall in St. Martin. Parish Prayers will be at 4:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary with the St. Martin Fire Department, St. Joseph Society and Catholic United Financial.

Visitation will continue from 11:00-1:30 p.m. Saturday morning at the parish hall.

Elvin was born in Zion Township, MN to Berthold and Arcella (Lenz) Lieser.

He married Elnora Schaefer on June 20, 1956 in the St. Martin Catholic Church, St. Martin, MN. Elvin was a farmer and self-employed at Lieser Masonry for 50 years and was on the Board of Directors for the St. Martin National Bank. Elvin loved ice cream, baseball, fishing, bowling, softball, deer hunting, auctions, coffee and dice. He was a charter member of the St. Martin Fire Department, played for St. Martin Baseball team for 25 years

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Knights of Columbus Father Pierz Council #3628 in Albany for over 50 years, former member of the Freeport Lions Club, and was a retired Fireman with the Albany Fire Department. Jim enjoyed all sports, especially the Minnesota Gophers and Twins, and the St. John’s Johnnies. He loved fishing, playing cards, planting lots of flowers, and decorating the lawn for holidays.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Obermiller of Freeport; sons, Carl Obermiller of Crystal and Daniel Obermiller of Freeport; sister, Cathy Schmidt of St. Joseph; aunt, Mary Ann Groetsch of Albany; and many loving relatives and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold “Arnie” Obermiller in 2000 and Madeline Obermiller in 2002; brothers-in-law, Wayne Schmidt, George Heidgerken, James Heidgerken, and Charlie Heidgerken; sisters -in-law, Rita Heidgerken and Shirley Heidgerken; and Godchild, Steven Heidgerken.

John volunteered endless hours at the local care center, helping neighbors.

He also loved to take pictures, go snowmobiling and host a haunted Halloween house at the farm. One of John’s greatest enjoyments was dressing up as Santa Claus spreading joy during the Christmas season to many families around the area who knew he was the “real Santa Claus.”

Kate Bjorge was the guest speaker at the Little Falls Kiwanis Club. Kate is with CHI St. Gabriel’s Live Better Live Longer program. The mission of Live Better Live Longer (LBLL) is to “inspire Morrison County residents to live better and live longer through healthy eating (EAT), increased physical activity (MOVE) and positive social connections (BELONG).” One of their BELONG projects is infant kindness kits. Another norm, is respect for other people, their rights, and their property.

All that is violated when crowds take over streets and highways and start destroying government or personal property. That is criminal conduct punishable by law.

Some demonstrators, and news media people, claim they are afraid of Trump. But if they supported his opponent, they should instead fear God. She stood for some things God calls abomination.

You see, His Laws are just, but the

penalty for disobeying Him, will be eternal damnation. First in Hell and later in the Lake of Fire forever.

The Word of God, rightfully claims, that all of us have sinned. That we are condemned already. But because of His great love for us he sent Jesus Christ, his only begotten son, to die for us on the cross. His precious blood is enough to cover all the sins of the world.

Unfortunately, too many in America, and too many in the world, refuse to believe in God and The Word of God (Jesus). Jesus said few will go to Heaven. Seek God, believe and repent. Why reject God! President Trump’s first official act should be to order all flags be flown at half-mast until this country stops the ungodly killing of the innocent unborn.

And every day the heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. In a lifetime, it will create enough energy to drive it to the moon and back.

When we consider all that our hearts do for us, its importance cannot be measured. Without its constant beating we could not live. It sustains our lives. Its every beat is a gift from God but we rarely think about it unless we have “heart-problems.” Yet, physical-heart problems are not as serious as spiritual-heart problems. Only God can do miracles with “both” hearts.

The word “heart” occurs six times in Psalm 73. But in verse one it speaks of “those who are pure in heart” - those whose heart is completely committed to God and place Him first in their lives and love Him unconditionally.

Over this God-centered heart is the heart that Jeremiah describes: “a heart that is deceitful and beyond cure.” A heart in this condition needs the Great Physician to cleanse it, restore it, live in it and fill it with His love.

-Pat Dear Pat, When the rules of paying off debts from smallest to largest don’t apply, I look at things this way: If you have two debts that are of equal amounts, I would attack the one with the larger interest rate first. In your case, that would be the credit card debt.

I get what you’re saying about the car. You guys might be in a bind if something happened and you lost one car. But it’s also something you could work around if you had no other choice.

So yeah, knock out the credit card first then move on to the car. Going this route will serve two purposes: First, it will save you some money. And second, I’ve got a feeling it will fire up your wife and get her on board with the plan even more than she already is.

The stock market indicates this is true, and in the process, gold becomes worth less and less. Gold is essentially a fear-based product, and the less fear that’s out there, the cheaper gold is.

That’s not how you want to fund your IRA, Sandy. You want to fund it with something that has a long track record based on growth due to the performance of the companies involved — not someone’s greed or fear. Gold is a horrible investment, and I don’t own any except for one nice watch and a pair of cuff links. That’s it!

Burtrum City December 5, 2016 These are unapproved minutes.

The meeting of the Burtrum City Council was called to order at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5th, 2016 by Mayor Ronald Strassburg. The meeting minutes from the November 7th, 2016 meeting were read and approved by a motion made by Anna Payne and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich, upon vote motion carried and the minutes were accepted. Next, the finance report was read and approved by a motion made by Deb VanHavermaet and seconded by Beau Krueger. The council then discussed outstanding bills and upon a motion made by Kevin Wunderlich and seconded by Anna Payne, and the bills were paid.

With the upcoming year, the City Council will have a vacancy on the Council. We wish to fill this position as promptly as possible to best assist the residents. Those interested in the City Council position should send a letter of interest to the City of Burtrum or express interest via email to the city of Burtrum (cityofburtrum@gmail. com) and we will be able share more information at that time.

More information and details will be shared via our Facebook page and the community board outside the Town hall, if and when they become available.

Some community members of the City attended the meeting to express their frustration with the City roads not being plowed following the last snow fall. The City Council acknowledges that the roads may not have been the best, however; due to the softness of the road due to the warmer weather at the time and the weight of the plow truck, it could have potentially caused more damage to the roads and gravel being thrown into yards.

The City Council sincerely does apologize for any inconvenience this caused and will research alternative plowing solutions in the event this should happen again in the future.

In further new business the City Council approved to pay the City Clerk mileage for additional travels other than the routine monthly meetings for City approved purposes only. This was approved by a motion made by Anna Payne and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich, upon vote motion carried. The City Clerk has agreed to keep these additional trips to a minimum and to record all mileage and provide to the City Council at the next scheduled meeting. In addition, the City Clerk requested to consult with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for city tax purposes. This was approved by a motion made by Beau Krueger and seconded by Kevin Wunderlich, and upon vote the motion carried.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ron asked to have Mark Erdmann added to the agenda.

Ron made the motion to accept the agenda as amended. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 7, 2016 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to accept the minutes, Ray made the second. Minutes approved.

Mark Erdmann – along with his representative presented a petition to the Township requesting a vacation of a portion of the property known as the swimming beach.

The request was followed with a request to hold the public hearing on the 6th day of March 2017, giving enough time to notify the DNR as this property abuts the lake.

Motion was made by Mike with a 2nd by Ray to accept the petition. All in favor. Motion carried. Mike then made a motion to hold the public hearing on March 6, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Ray made the second. All in favor.

Motion carried.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included 14 claims 2993-3006 for a total of $9,108.49. This included costs for election judges for the general election. Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Mail included advertising and a letter from P & Z. Ron reported on the P& Z meeting he attended. Several changes were made in the wording and distance requirements, all can be viewed on the County website. Ray made the motion to let the CD renew at

CMCU. Mike made the second, Motion carried. Discussion began as to whether or not to take out a new CD this year. Mike made the motion to put $50,000. into a R&B CD for this year. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Discussion was had about the January Township meeting. Mike made a motion to move the meeting date to January 9, 2017. Ray made the second, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that he was not happy with the brush cutting that was done and that next time the Township should have something in writing before the work begins. At least one of the supervisors must approve the work before payment is made. Ray also shared a letter from the State of MN about a second driveway for a property owner and stated that it would have to be at the property owners’ expense and that he would need to contact the state.

Additional agenda items: Mike attended the Fire board meeting on November 22, 2016. He reported that the Township had a high amount of rescue calls which could be related to more older residents and more permanent residents on the lakes.

Mary Ann reported on the Fall Township Conference that was held in St. Cloud. Lots of new information and discussions about rural broadband.

Public Comment: None.

Adjournment: Motion by Ray to adjourn the meeting. Mike made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:10 p.m.

Did His parents even notice, were they both so still in awe? Did he fluff up his feathers, as he crowed to friend and foe? Did he get extra perky, as he put on his grand show?

Did he wake all the yellow chicks, with a shriek that wasn’t meek? Did he do it all on purpose, so that they all could get a peek? Did his great call awake the cows? Did they gather around to see?

Were they all astonished, that He

was the Holy Baby? Did the sheep gaze up sleepily, as they heard the rooster’s call? Or did the loud, shattered silence get them to their feet, one and all?

Did he wake the old donkey, snuggled close to Baby’s bed? Didn’t that noise bother donkey, because he had stayed up late, instead?

Did the rooster realize, on this splendid, wondrous morn, that he was chosen to announce, that our Lord, Jesus Christ was born? What an awesome privilege, our God, on him, did bestow.

What about now- when he crowsdoes rooster still want us to know?

Get involved: There are plenty of people and groups who could use your help during the Christmas season. One of the best ways to prove to your team that they’re involved with a caring organization is by getting involved in the community.

Lots of companies give products and services free of charge during this time of year, and that’s a good thing.

But how about taking things a bit further? Try holding a fund-raiser for a local school or charitable organization.

Better yet, give your team members time off to lend a helping hand in person.

DNR Issues Ice Warning for Serated Lakes The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources warns ice anglers, snowmobilers, skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts to use caution when going onto any lake covered or partially covered with ice, especially those that feature aeration systems. ”Open water areas created by aeration systems can shift or change shapes depending on weather conditions,” said Marilyn Danks, DNR aquatic biologist.

“Leaks may develop in air lines, creating other areas of weak ice or open water.”

Aeration systems are generally operated from the time lakes freeze until ice break-up in the spring. They help prevent winterkill of fish, but they also create areas of open water and thin ice, which are significant hazards.

Two types of signs are used to post aerated lakes: “Thin Ice” and “Warning” signs. The person who applies for the permit (permittee) is to maintain “Warning” signs at all commonly used access points to the lake. This sign warns people approaching the lake that an aeration system is in operation and to use extreme caution.

The permittee must also put up “Thin Ice” signs to mark the open water area’s perimeter. Some cities and towns may have ordinances that prohibit entering into the thin ice area or prohibit the night use of motorized vehicles on lakes with aeration systems in operation, or both.
