Lessons learned from movies -By Harvey Mackay I am a movie fanatic and love to go whenever I get a chance. It doesn’t hurt that I have a son who is a film director in Hollywood. Plus I had the pleasure of serving on Robert Redford’s S u n d a n c e Institute Board for 14 years.

I ’ v e observed that we can learn a lot from the movies.

For example, lighting a single match in a dark room will provide sufficient light to see everything. Ventilation ducts are roomy enough to allow anyone to wiggle through them. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any Paris hotel room.

And, all police departments make sure to pair partners who are exact opposites.

Okay, so those might require a little artistic license.

Seriously, I have learned many lessons from the movies, such as the oft-repeated Michael Corleone line, “Keep your friends close, but your

enemies closer.” When I first saw “The Godfather Part II,” I thought that line was brilliant. I viewed my enemies as my competitors. That’s why I now have a speech lesson called “Know Thy Competitor.”

“The Intern” offered many lessons, including working with different generations and their contrasting styles, communicating and language, problem solving and leadership. It’s important to get everyone’s participation and perspective.

“The Bucket List” taught me the valuable lesson to live my life to the fullest. As I get older, I’m doing my best to fulfill some specific dreams. I had the good fortune to attend games six and seven of this year’s World Series with my son, and recently returned from golfing at Ireland’s greatest courses.

“The Founder,” the story of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc, was like deja vu for me. It brought back a lot of memories of experiences in building my envelope manufacturing company.

When you are an entrepreneur, you need to sell your vision, think big, be an innovator, hire well, select good partners, be able to handle rejection and frustration, negotiate with the best of them, and above all, never give up.

As the boss, you need to work harder than anyone else.

The importance of teamwork is a message that comes through loud and clear in “Ocean’s 11.” Danny Ocean and Rusty Ryan spent a lot of time recruiting a team with unique skills to pull off the heist of the century. Yes, they were thieves, but they were master planners!

I took away a couple business lessons from “Legally Blonde.” The first is to never judge a book by its cover. People can surprise you. The second is that no matter what other people think, you control your own destiny. If you are willing to work hard, you can achieve most anything you put your mind to.

Chief among the many lessons from the movie “Moneyball,” the true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, were bucking the system and tackling problems in an unorthodox way. The small-market team with a limited budget used analytics and statistical probabilities to build the team, going against coaches and scouts.

Yoda, the little green Jedi Master in the “Star Wars” movies had a number of great lines, but two in particular stood out to me. In “The Empire Strikes Back,” he said, “Do. Or do not. There is only try.” In “The Phantom Menace,” he uttered, “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”

Some movies serve as warnings, like “Wall Street.” We live in an instant gratification world, and this movie is a good example of this. Gordon Gekko has everything and always wants more, constantly looking for quick riches through any means necessary. Bud Fox is similar, but the two characters are at different stages in their careers.

Still, both are looking at short cuts to give them the results they want. And as we all know, there are few short cuts in real life.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Lights

There was a time in years past when the night sky appeared to be filled with so many more bright stars.

The stars were set off by the dark, almost black sky, which really intensified the stars. This wonderful sight is much less available in our current night skies.

As a youth, I spent many nights working up the field in preparation for the spring planting. The stars appeared absolutely brilliant. Some nights were even more special, since the northern lights put on a show which was as good as they were during the winter evenings.

When was the last time you saw the northern lights or the really dark sky to set off the stars? I’m sure there are as many stars today as there were 60 years ago. The northern lights are as brilliant today as they were in years past. We just can’t see them as well.

We are changing our night skies. As the use of electric lighting increases, it is creating more reflection into the night sky. Light reflected upward reflects back from the impurities in the air. The air has many particles floating in it, including dust, smoke and water vapor. When the reflected light hits these particles, they

again reflect back to earth. This makes the night sky appear more gray and the night’s beautification is not as obvious.

Our cities are now very concerned with “light the night” for security purposes. The residential bedtime communities are expanding further from the city center making more night lighting.

Before electric utilities came to the rural area, very few yard lights existed.

When “juice” came through, every farm had some kind of a yard light. Since it was new, it was used conservatively. The light was probably created by a 60 watt bulb and was shut off when it was not needed. It was turned on when the cows were making extra noise, a car drove on the yard, the chickens were being especially noisy, the dog was barking or some evening guests were going to the car to go home. Today the lights are at least 300 watts of intensive lighting and are on all night. The light or lights are bright enough to “read by.”

These lights have created another requirement in our living environment.

We have to have them, along with the TV, computer, cell phone and all the rest of the things we just can’t live without.

Quality rather than opportunity allows you to not only survive the unexpected but thrive because of it.

One of the best holiday movies of all time, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” shows the principles of leadership. George Bailey put his customers, employees and family first by taking responsibility.

It’s the way many great American businesses were built. George’s angel Clarence uttered an unforgettable line: “… no man is a failure who has friends.”

Obituaries Cecelia Lenarz

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Cecelia Lenarz, age 96 of Albany, will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 16, at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Cecelia died Sunday at Chateau Waters in Sartell. There will be a visitation from 4-7:00 PM Friday and after 10:00 AM, Saturday at the Seven Dolors gathering space. Seven Dolors parish prayers will be at 4:00 PM, Friday at the church. Seven Dolors Christian Women will pray the rosary inside the church at 10:30 AM, Saturday. Arrangements are being made by the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home.

Cecelia was born December 29, 1920 in Sauk Center to Frank and Mary (Sohm) Bushey. She married Joseph Herzog in 1940.

Ellen Meyer

Ellen Francis (Tirrel) Meyer of Long Prairie died December 7, 2017 at CentreCare Hospital in Long Prairie.

Funeral services for Ellen will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017, 11:00 a.m. at Peace United Church in Long Prairie. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held at Woodman Cemetery, Clarissa.

Ellen was born January 17, 1929 in George, Iowa to Frank and Ella Tirrel. She married Ernest Alfred Meyer on January 27, 1949 in George, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 4, 2008.

Alfred and Ellen lived in Luverne, Browerville, Northfield, Blooming Prairie, and Springfield, MN before moving to Clarissa,

The couple raised six children before Joe died in 1963. Cecelia married Carl Lenarz on September 16, 1965. He died November 30, 1992. She worked at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care for over 20 years. During her time there, she studied and became a physical therapist. Cecelia was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and the Seven Dolors Christian Women.

Cecelia is survived by her children; Tom (Dianne) Herzog, St. Joseph; Renee (Neil) Boreen, North St. Paul; Vonnie (Tony) Habermann, White Bear Lake, Judy (Jeff) Williams, White Bear Lake; Clare (Norb) Poepping, Cold Spring. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her special friend, Harold Imholte, Clear Lake.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph, her husband, Carl; her son, Loren Herzog; her daughter, Joan Bushey; her brothers and sisters; Bernadette Upton, Paul Bushey, Kay Bushey, Ruth Bushey, Louis Bushey, Jim Bushey, Ben Bushey and Dolores Johnson.

When they retired from the farm they moved to Eagle Bend where Ellen continued to live after Alfred’s death until 2015 when she moved to Long Prairie. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Clarissa and Peace United Church in Long Prairie.

Ellen was an avid gardener with large flower and vegetable gardens and was a member of the Hope and Hoe Gardening Club in Clarissa. Ellen was also an accomplished seamstress and baker. She and Alfred were members of the Sunday Night Bowling League in Long Prairie for many years. Ellen was always very active in helping her children and grandchildren with all their 4-H projects.

Ellen is survived by four sons, Randy (Vicki) of Long Prairie, Rick of Clarissa, Ronnie (Sue) of Sauk Centre, and Roger of Denver, CO; sister Thelma Sohl of George, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 38 greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother John Tirrell.

Theodore V. “Ted” Koehn

Theodore V. “Ted” Koehn, age 91 of Long Prairie, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on We d n e s d a y, December 6, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 13 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose with Rev. David Mommens officiating. Interment will be at Redeemer Lutheran Cemetery in Dresden, North Dakota on Saturday, December 16 at 2 p.m.

Theodore Victor Koehn was born on his grandfather’s homestead farm on June 30, 1926 in Dresden, North Dakota to William A. and Magdalena (Hahn) Koehn.

He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dresden. He married Doris Klein on June 27, 1953 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Albany. After their marriage, the couple farmed cattle and grain on the Koehn Family farm in Dresden, North Dakota until 1979. In 1976, they moved to Long Prairie and started a dairy farm while still farming the family farm in North Dakota

until 1979. Their son, Jeff took over the Long Prairie family farm in 1991. Ted continued helping on the farm for many years. He was a former member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Upsala and a current member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Melrose.

Ted enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and traveling in their camper; visiting many states. He also enjoyed tinkering in his shop.

He could put anything together and make it into something useable.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Koehn of Long Prairie; sons, Jerome (Missy) Koehn and Jeff Koehn all of Long Prairie; daughter, Nancy (Dan “Bubba”) Rahn of Grey Eagle; grandchildren, Josh (Tonie) and Tyler Koehn (special friend, Vonnie Torres), and Nathan and Amber Rahn; special greatgranddaughter, Alexis Wilson; sister, Gladys Koehn of Yankton, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.

Ted was preceded in death by his son, James “Jim” Koehn on April 19, 2015; sisters, brother, and in-laws, Katherine (Julius) Thon, Hildegard (John) Schilds, Otelia (Neil) Hoxsie, and William C. (Ruth) Koehn.

Serving as casket bearers were Josh Koehn, Tonie Koehn, Tyler Koehn, Vonnie Torres, Nathan Rahn, and Amber Rahn.

Survivors include her daughter, Kim (Bruce) Brix of Richmond; grandchildren, Stacy McIntosh-Brix and Joshua Brix, and brother, Floyd Stocker. She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Nora, Matias and Vivien McIntosh.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Everett in 2001, brothers and sisters, Edwin Stocker, Stanley Stocker, Sonny Stocker, Phil Rohms, Rosemary Zieglemeir, and Florence Nelson.

John Charles Albaugh John Charles Albaugh, 79 year old resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Upsala, MN passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at his residence. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Faith Lutheran Church in Little Falls, with Pastor Nate Bjorge officiating. Burial will be at Darling Cemetery northwest of Little Falls.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, December 15th and on Saturday from 10 to 11 AM, both at the church. Arrangements are with Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.

Albaugh was born on October 30, 1938 at St. Lukes Hospital Cedar Rapids Iowa.

John was the first-born child of Charles Alden and Helen Martha Albaugh.

He is preceeded in death by his parents Charles Alden Albaugh and Helen Martha (Johnson) Albaugh and his only sibling David Alden Albaugh.

John is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years Janette (Oslund) Albaugh. Four children and their spouses John (Chuck) Albaugh & Shannon, Ben Albaugh and Grace, James (Pat) Albaugh and Kari, Susan Knopik and David. 11 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren along with brother-inlaw and sister-in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces and countless friends.

Education was always very important to John. He is a graduate of John W. Hanes High School in Winston Salem, North Carolina, graduating with Honors. A Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Wake Forest University. A Master’s Degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Minnesota and a PhD in Administrative Management from Walden University. He continued learning his entire life, possibly holding the record for the most consecutive semesters of Spanish I at the University of Wisconsin, White Water, (He never gave up). Work was always a central part of John’s life. He started working at a drug store as well as driving a school bus to support his young family while attending Wake Forest University. After graduation, he took a job with Firestone as a District Sales Manager, being promoted to Regional Sales Manager. Due to the heavy travel demands and separation from his family he changed career paths and began his Health Care profession at Saint Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls

MN. He went on to become the Executive Director of Monticello-Big Lake Community Hospital. Moving to Worthington, Minnesota to become Administrator of the Regional Hospital. His last position was as President and CEO of Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services at Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. He retired as Life Fellow from the American College of HealthCare Executives. From the very beginning of his adult life, Community Service was a top priority. He worked tirelessly with many service organizations, Chamber of Commerce, Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis, United Way and many more, often serving as a Director and many times as the President of these many organizations. One of his great disappointments was when he had to stop serving at the local Food Shelf this past summer, (He thanked his friend Bonnie for taking over his shifts a few days before his passing). As a lifelong learner, he developed a great affinity for traveling.

He and his wife Janette traveled the globe visiting all 7 Continents, Asia, Europe, Australia, North and South America, Africa and even Antarctica, and always wanting to learn from the people during these travels. He developed a special bond with the people of southern Mexico and Central America while servicing several Missions to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras for over 20 years. He was a man of great Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Wherever he lived he worked with his Church in any position that was needed, from Greeter to Sunday School Teacher to President of the Church Council. He even attended Luther Seminary in St. Paul Minnesota so that he could help the Congregations that he was a part of.

He and his wife are founding members of Faith Lutheran Church of Little Falls and they were so happy to be a part of that wonderful, thoughtful, caring community where they loved to serve. With the benefit of technology, he was able to read Scriptures to the Congregation on November 26, 2017, he loved being able to give back a little for all the service that his Faith Lutheran family was giving to him and his wife. John, Dad and Papa John you taught us, inspired us, showed us by example, played with us, laughed with us and loved us. He loved his family and his family loved him. We miss you.

Ervin “Erv” Thielen

E r v i n “Erv” Thielen, age 80 of New Munich, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, December 11, 2017 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 16 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday and from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

Ervin Arnold Thielen was born July 22, 1937 in Freeport, Minnesota to Theodore and Olivia (Roering) Thielen. On October 7, 1961 he was united in marriage to Gloria Ann “Annie” Hiltner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Together, Erv and Annie raised a family of ten children in New Munich. Erv worked as a butcher, purchasing Thielen Meats in 1972 from his father and owned the business until his retirement in 1999. Erv also drove school

Max Molus, 88 year old resident of Fridley formerly of Elmdale Township died Tuesday, December 12 at the Estates of Roseville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, December 19 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale with Father Jeremy Theis officiating. The burial will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 19 from 9:30-11:00 A.M. at the Church in Elmdale.

Max was born March 14, 1929 in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Minnesota to the late Peter and Elizabeth (Dobis) Molus. He attended country school in Elmdale Township. He served his country in the United States Navy for four years during the Korean War. As a young man he worked on the Iron Ore boats on Lake Superior for a few years. He was united in marriage to Irene Klisch on August 6, 1962 at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Elmdale. The couple made their home in North East Minneapolis, Robbinsdale and Fridley. Max worked as boiler operator and in the maintenance departments for the Swedish Hospital, Methodist Hospital and Hennepin County. Max and Irene

Erv’s retirement gave him more time to play cards, especially his favorite game SKAT, and enjoy trips to the casino. Erv knew how to work hard and loved to have fun when the work was finished.

Erv was member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and St. Joseph’s Men’s Society. He was the mayor of New Munich for several terms, served on the New Munich Fire Department for 32 years, and did many years of service with the New Munich Lions.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria “Annie” Thielen of New Munich; children, Char (Maurice) Mayers of New Munich, Tim “Ox” (Kelly) Thielen of New Munich, Carol (Scott) Thelen of New Munich, Mary (Mark) Hasse of New Munich, John (Katie) Thielen of New Munich, Jim (Theresa) Thielen of St. Augusta, Peg (Kurt) Thelen of New Munich, Dean (Jenny) Thielen of St. Wendel, Robert (Tracey) Thielen of Sauk Centre, and Scott (Katrina) Thielen of Freeport; 16 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren; and one sister, Lenore May of Cold Spring; many other relatives and friends.

also owned and operated a mobile home park near Perch Lake in Brainerd, MN. Irene died on December 31, 2008 and Max continued living in Fridley after her death.

Max enjoyed wood working, crafts, fishing, hunting, enjoyed traveling especially to Alaska and Poland. He was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church in Fridley, Fridley Knights of Columbus, Spring Lake Park Post #6587 and the Bowlus American Legion Post # 642.

Left to cherish his memory are his siblings, Marion Bursey of Royalton, Arnie (Carol) Molus of Bowlus, Jeanette (Art) Ohotto of Fridley, Adeline Molus of Bowlus, and Arlene Fussy of Royalton, special care giver, Ann Copeland of Fridley and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irene; brother, Elmer Molus, brothers-in law, Eddie Bursey and Sam Fussy.

The Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Cyril J. Kuklok, age 95 of Opole was held Monday, December 11 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Cyril was born June 24, 1922 in Opole to Frank and Agnes (Philipsek) Kuklok. He married Bridget Kociemba and the couple raised six children together. Cyril farmed and worked at Franklin Manufacturing for over 37 years.

Cyril enjoyed spending time with his family, going to auctions, collecting International tractors, and making woodworking projects.

Elizabeth (Thull) Sand. Alcuin attended country school in Grove Township. For several years, Al played Right Outfielder for the amateur New Munich Baseball Team. As a young adult, Alcuin served in the U.S. Army.

Upon returning home from the service, Alcuin farmed the family farm in Grove Township his entire life and in 1999 moved into Melrose. In January 2016, Alcuin moved from his home to Pine Villa. Alcuin enjoyed playing cards, visits with his nephews and nieces, and truly loved living on the family farm.

Al was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and the Lake Henry American Legion Post 612.

Survivors include his sisters and brothers, Bertilla “Bert” Caspers of New Munich, Lee (Rita) Sand of St. Cloud, Severin (Jenny) Sand of St. Cloud, and Marcella Fichtinger of Melrose; and many nieces, nephews, greatnieces and great-nephews.

Alcuin was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Elizabeth Sand; and brothers, Clarence Sand, Romie Sand, Elmer Sand, and Alvin Sand.

St. Joseph Christian Women held their Community Christmas gathering at St. Joseph’s Hall in Grey Eagle on December 2nd. Music by Delores Wolbeck, games, prizes and food were enjoyed by all. Submitted by Evelyn Budde.

The Grey Eagle/Swanville Knights of Columbus Council recently donated $3,000.00 to 6 Seminarians who are studying for the Priesthood. Jim Sinclair and Ken Sinclair delivered the checks to Father Scott Pogatschnik, Director of Vocations, at the St. Cloud Diocese Vocations Office. The local Council started to support Seminarians when it formed in August of 2008. Since that time, the Council has donated $31,000.00 to assist young men that are studying to become Priests. For the past several years, the local Council has been the Top Council in the State of Minnesota in terms of the amount that is given to help these Seminarians. Submitted by Ken Sinclair.

Nine-one-one is the national number to use in the event of an emergency. When we use it, we know someone is there who will come to our rescue.

Though we have heard stories of the misuse of that number and reports of incompetent responders answering calls of people in a crisis, it is comforting to know that help is available.

Psalm ninety-one and verse one is a number for Christians to “re-call” when there is a need for assurance and reassurance. It firmly states that our God is on guard and “standing by” to guide us

through the crises of life.

The word “dwells” is such an important word for us to understand. It invites the believer “to remain, stay, tarry, endure, and find peace in one’s abode.” It suggests continuance and permanence. It is a place where God’s people can “live” - forever. How comforting it is to know that our God is a “shelter” and a “refuge” in times of life’s storms. For the Christian, He is our dwelling place for life.

Shortly after a submarine had been commissioned, the commanding officer took it to sea. It was to undergo various tests to make certain that it was trustworthy and ready for service. Shortly after leaving the christening he gave the order to “submerge.” Several days later after he returned to shore, the reporters besieged him with many questions. Asked one, “How did the storms affect you?” “Storms? What storms?” he replied. “We were not aware of any storms. We were dwelling in a safe and secure place in the valleys between the ocean’s mountains.”

Now, a collection agency is after her for the remaining $5,000.

We make about $90,000 a year combined, and our attorney recommended we file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The idea of filing bankruptcy scares me. Is there a better way to handle this?

-Jeffery Dear Jeffery, Your attorney doesn’t sound very bright. A bankruptcy stays on your record for years. It’s just plain stupid to consider trashing your financial life over $5,000.

This collector bought the loan for pennies on the dollar. It’s an old debt, and that means there are very low expectations for collection. At the same time, your wife did co-sign for the loan.

If you have the money, and you can pay it off without hurting yourselves financially, do it. That’s the right thing, both morally and legally. If you don’t have that kind of cash on hand, try haggling with them. See if you can get them to agree to settle for $2,500.

Remember to get this agreement in writing before you send them a dime, and do not give them access to your bank account.

Chances are they’ll threaten to sue and all that stuff, but my guess is you can work out something on an old loan like this. It may take a couple of weeks and a little patience, but that’s a small price to pay if it saves you $2,500.

-Dave Dear Dave, What do you think about online investing apps, and the way they allow you to jump in and out of stocks for really low fees?

-Anonymous Dear Anonymous, I don’t think about them, and I don’t use them. I don’t play single stocks — period.

There’s a ton of research out there showing that people who play individual stocks on their own — or with their broker, or with a golfing buddy — see a rate of return of about seven percent on average. You can make anywhere from 10 to 14 percent, on average, with good growth stock mutual funds.

I could probably play single stocks more intelligently than most people, but why? If the average is noticeably less than I’m seeing with my mutual funds, why bother going there? Plus, with a mutual fund portfolio, you’ve got someone who does this kind of thing for a living managing and researching your investments for you in your best interest.

I don’t have an app on my phone that lets me trade stocks, nor do I plan on getting one. There’s nothing wrong with apps, in general, but I’ll never recommend jumping in and out of single stocks as a method of investing.

Tis the season for STRESS!

By John Young The holidays can be a time of great fun, but in a recent survey, most felt that the holidays are more stressful today than they were years ago. Some of the reasons for this additional end of the year stress can be found in last week’s article on how Christmas has changed over the years.

If you find these holidays a very stressful time, here are a few tips that might help you make it through the next two weeks!

1. Take calm-down breaks: Whenever you get stressed out, anxious or feel overwhelmed during the day, take quick relaxation breaks of 1 to 5 minutes to calm yourself down. Conscious, slow breathing can help you when you’re feeling frustrated waiting in line at the supermarket, post office or drug store. It might be a simple trip to the coffee shop for a break, but remove yourself for a bit and take that calm-down break.

2. Look at the world through rose-colored glasses: When people try to push their bad habits on you during this holiday season, try to understand their motivations. For instance, before you get annoyed at Aunt Jane, who keeps urging you to try a piece of her apple pie, or your Uncle Frank, who keeps trying to get you a beer, first take a deep breath. Then, step into their shoes and realize that Jane is just showing that she loves you, and Frank is merely trying to be a friendly host. Then graciously thank them for their misguided attention. Rather than view your situation with annoyance, be grateful instead.

3. Get your body moving: Perhaps one of the best ways to overcome stress during the holidays or any other time is to exercise regularly. Research shows that physical activity not only boosts your fitness and energy levels but can also elevate your moods. In addition, exercise has been found to reduce anger, tension, fatigue and confusion. Despite the many demands on your time, this is not the season to stop exercising. When regular exercisers are inactive, they begin to feel depressed and fatigued after just one week.

4. Watch what you eat - go for real food: At this time of year, you’ll be tempted with sugary, empty-calorie “treats” just about wherever you go. But to be your most energetic, focused and happy self, it’s best to eat foods that grow on trees or on the ground (vegetables and fruits) and to choose healthy fats (such as olive oil and flax seeds), lean protein (such as fish and organic chicken) and legumes, nuts and seeds.

5. Watch your intake of comfort foods and drinks: During the holidays, it’s easy to “fall off the wagon” and use—or over-use—alcohol, sugar and

caffeine. It’s best to think before you treat your body like a trash can instead of a temple. The best way to help yourself is to limit your consumption of such comfort or pleasure foods and drinks such as apple pie, cookies, pasta and eggnog.

When offered these and other “goodies,” try to take three to five “polite” bites and sips—and only after having a well-balanced meal with smart carbs (vegetables, fruits or whole grains), fats and protein.

Be aware that if you’re a sugar addict (yes, this is a real thing), you must be especially careful when it comes to desserts and quickie carbs in candies and chips.

6. Make a ‘what I have to do’ and a ‘what I want to do for me’ list: Writing down all that you have to do during the holidays will help you realize how doable your tasks are. Be realistic as to what you put on your lists. Then start tackling one item from each list in turn. For example, after buying gifts for your mom or significant other, take time to work out.

By alternating between lists, you won’t feel deprived, because you’re being good to yourself. Knocking items off your have to do list is a great comfort for those of us in the crowd that like to make lists!

7. Get your rest: This should probably be the number one tip. Be sure to not over schedule your events so you can still accomplish those important tasks and allow you time to rest and recharge. I don’t think anyone in your family wants to spend the holidays with a tired, grumpy version of yourself!

8. It’s all about giving - of your time: Remember, that it is truly better to give than receive. Yet, where we struggle is when we think that the best thing we can give is a physical gift. This year, skip the stress of shopping for the perfect gift that will be returned two weeks later and plan to spend QUALITY time with loved ones.

This doesn’t mean just on Christmas day!

Quality time as a large group isn’t quality time. You can take your niece or nephew shopping, take the grandchildren to a movie, or go out for coffee with your siblings. Give the gift of your time in a quality time situation (one on one or in a VERY small group) where you can engage and build relationships that will be treasured for a lifetime!

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus and Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Mary Ann asked to include discussion on January meeting date. Mike made the motion to accept the agenda as amended. Ray made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 6, 2017 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes, Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included claims 3122-3131 for a total of $5,003.97.

Ray made the motion to approve the claims; Mike made the second, Motion carried. Mail included advertising and a email from an attorney regarding ATV use.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that the new culvert was installed on the approach along 335th. The driveways and approaches received gravel after the new tar project. Washouts on Cozy Cove were repaired. Ray did a road check and found them to be in good condition. Discussion on the new tar and tar projects- as there were some areas in need of repair, Mike made a motion to withhold $11,000 from the total claim for the road project. Ray made a second, motion carried. Discussion on which CD to use for the project. It was decided to use the three that will mature in December and to let CD 10 automatically renew. Mike made a motion to that effect, Ray made the second. Motion carried. Ray made the motion to pay the claim to Tri-City Paving for $219,774.14 leaving the $11,000 for next spring when the repairs are made. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Review of the snow contract with Herdering, Inc., Ray made a motion to accept the new rate at $95.00 per hour. Mike made the second. Motion carried.

Additional agenda item: Mike attended the annual Fire Board meeting held on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Mike reported no new changes. He did relay the concern for brush control on a minimum maintenance road that the fire department needed to access and would like the Township to do some trimming along.

Weed report is due in January and can be completed at the next meeting.

Discussion on the January meeting date- Ron made the motion to move the meeting date to January 8, 2018 due to the New Years Holiday. Clerk will post and publish.

Adjournment: Motion by Ron to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

Department Reports: Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels. Koopmeiners stated the main lift station is scheduled to be cleaned out; he is not sure if this will happen due to the weather.

Lange moved to approve a 5% increase for Julian Herbes, who works for the City during the summers, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Department Report: The Fire Department submitted their November minutes.

The Fire Department recommended hiring 3 new probationary firefighters effective January 1, 2018 pending their physical and passing their Firefighter I and II training; Amber Koopmeiners, Paul Kasella, and Brandon Voller.

Olson moved to approve the three firefighters as presented by Baggenstoss, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Jay Baggenstoss reported that he has not heard from Rodney Hayes and requests the council to terminate his position with the Fire Department.

Olson moved to terminate Rodney Hayes’ position on the fire department as of January 1, 2018, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Just a reminder, December 14th will be the Holiday Lights Contest date. The judges will be Brian Lange, Lisa Hansen, and Don Marty. The Winners will receive $150, $100 and $50 in Upsala Bucks.

Recreation Board: New keys and locks are on the doors. The repairs to the building are now completed.

Old Business: Maintenance Building: The steel is expected to go up on the new maintenance building this week.

New Business: UBA Raffle: Lange moved to approve a gambling permit for UBA with no waiting period set for January 27, 2018 at the Rec Building located at 320 Walnut, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Extratyme Lease Agreement: Lange moved to approve the contract with changed made in sections 4,7 and 9, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Fee Schedule: Olson moved to approve the Upsala 2018 Fee Schedule as presented pending the approval of the mayor once the fee for a lot split is determined, 2nd

F u n e r a l Services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Cloud for Elaine C. Vogel, age 90, of Avon.

Elaine passed away December 10, 2017, grateful that she could live life on her own terms and in her beloved home on the lake. Reverend Bruce Timm will preside. Burial will take place in the St. John the Baptist Parish Cemetery in Collegeville.

A visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 15 at the St. John the Baptist Parish Center in Collegeville. A visitation will also take place after 12 noon on Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Cloud.

Elaine was born October 25, 1927 in Stearns County, MN to Scott and Jorgine “Gena” (Olson) Mills. She graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School in 1945. While in high school, she worked in the concession stand at the Paramount Theatre and later as a salesperson at Fandel’s. After graduation, she went to Minneapolis and worked in the office of Boulevard Frocks. When Al, the love of her life, returned from serving in the Air Force, she returned to St. Cloud. They were married in 1947 and that happy union lasted 62 years until Al’s death in 2009.

Elaine spent the next four years as the secretary to the general manager of Herberger’s. From there she went to Stearns Manufacturing and spent ten years in their office. Her final 32+ years were spent at St. John’s Abbey and University. She was secretary to three Presidents and three Abbots. Because of her association with St. John’s, Al and Elaine developed some very close relationships with the monks. Through

Ronald M. Koczur, age 66 of Albany, MN died Monday, December 4, 2017 at St. Cloud Hospital. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 15, 2017 at Miller Carlin Funeral Home in Holdingford, MN. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, MN. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Ronald was born March 2, 1951 in Little Falls, MN to Walter and Ann (Mihalik) Koczur. He attended school in Upsala. Ron served in the US Navy. On May 20, 1978 he was united in marriage to Nancy Stachowski Continued from Pg 9

her association with St. John’s, she and Al made several trips to the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Mexico where they stayed at the missions. They also were host parents to 14 College of St. Benedict Bahamian students.

Elaine was a member of the St. Joseph American Legion Auxiliary Unit #328 for 45 years. She served as Unit President for 12 terms and was the Unit’s Poppy Chairman for 20 years. She also served as Veterans Administration & Rehabilitation Chairman under three Department Presidents. She was President of the East Stearns Council for a year.

After retirement, Elaine spent time volunteering at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Healthcare Center where she accumulated 12,971 volunteer hours.

She also served as a Deputy Rep for the American Legion Auxiliary in the Veterans Administration Voluntary Services.

One of her favorite pastimes was trying new recipes, entertaining and cherishing their many friends. She and Al were also able to enjoy trips throughout the United States. Elaine especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all holidays were family oriented.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Patricia Ann (Chris) Zimmerman of St. Cloud and Daniel Alfred (Kris) Vogel of Avon; grandchildren Mathew (Jennie) Zimmerman of Dallas, TX, Molly (James) Mann of Dallas, TX, Megan (Nate) Corrieri of Sartell, and Garrett Vogel of St. Joseph; great grandchildren Mason and Sophia Corrieri, Michaela and Joshua Zimmerman, Cori Lynn Vogel and Claire Rose Mann; sister Marlys Starr of Kennewick, WA; sisters-in-law Mary Backus, Jane Palmersheim, Mary Ann Vogel, Arlene Vogel, Lorraine Vogel, Robert Prose and Karen Vogel; and brothers-in-law Louis Vogel, Wally Backus and August Preusser.

Preceding Elaine in death were her parents, husband Al (May 17, 2009) and nine in-laws. in Minneapolis, MN. They made their home in Minneapolis before moving to Rice, and later Albany. Ron worked as a truck driver and was an avid fisherman.

Ron is survived by his wife, Nancy of Albany; Sons, Jason (Elaine) Koczur of Lakeville, MN, and David (Karey) Koczur of Chicago and three grandchildren, JT, Amber and Emma; brother and sister, Greg (Ginny) Koczur of Colstrip, MT, and Judy (Dave) Moonen of Holdingford.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Christmas Grinch?: On November 28th, there was a burglary alarm at Extra Innings Bar in Spring Hill where a window had been removed but nothing was taken. On December 4th, deputies responded to similar alarm at Extra Innings where a door was open. A search of the bar revealed a second story window broken out to gain entry into the bar. Deputies discovered that several bottles of alcohol were taken; two bottles of Crown Royal, one bottle of Philips Vodka, one bottle of McMasters whiskey, and two bottles of Absolute Vodka. Oddly, there was some cash left near the till that was not taken. Apparently, The Grinch found no need for the cash. Deputies obtained some evidence of the Grinch’s visit, which is being processed. Let’s rewind back to December 2nd. Deputies spoke with a Holdingford resident, who reported two decorative inflatables stolen from her patio overnight in the 100 block of 3rd Street. The same resident called again on December 4th to report yet another inflatable missing and others damaged. If anyone has information on either of these calls, please contact the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office at 320-259-3700.

December 6, 2017: At 07:48 Jerry Ager reported a burglary at an out building (turkey barn) at the address of 21655 County 39, Long Prairie. Unknown individual/individuals entered the barn and stole a number of tools. The incident occurred between 12/1 and 12/2. Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.

December 10, 2017: At 16:36 the Todd County Sheriff’s Office responded to an ATV accident on County 5 near 250th St., Long Prairie. Reilmi Castro, 25 of Long Prairie, was injured after rolling the ATV he was riding. Castro was brought to the CentraCare Hospital by a passerby. Castro was not wearing a helmet.
