Live a life of purpose -By Harvey Mackay T h e neighborhood kids had congregated in the front yard when a fire truck zoomed past.

Sitting on the front seat was a Dalmatian dog.

The children started discussing the dog’s duties.

“They use him to keep the crowds back when they go to a fire,” said a five-year-old girl.

“No,” said another, “they carry him for good luck.”

The third, a boy about six, brought the argument to an abrupt end when he said, “They use the dog to find the fire hydrant.”

Everyone has a purpose in life.

what is important to you, what you are passionate about, where you can make a difference – those are the factors that drive your purpose.

No matter how much money you make or how famous you become, living without a purpose takes the joy out of life. When the most important part of your existence is missing, the quest for material success becomes hollow.

My friend, Brandon Steiner, who runs Steiner Sports, one of the country’s largest sports memorabilia companies, has written a book, “Living on Purpose,” that should be required reading for every young person starting out in a career.

Brandon shares remarkable insights into how to win at the game of life when business success isn’t enough.

Brandon had worked hard his entire life since age 10 and sold his company in 2000 for more money than he had ever dreamed of. But he wasn’t happy. He was emotionally bankrupt. His health deteriorated, as did his friendships. He had lost his purpose in life.

It took a few years and with the help of some trusting friends, Brandon became a better husband and father, bought his company back and started getting more involved in charity work.

He sought to leave a legacy.

In his book, Brandon details some of his journeys from learning faith from New York Yankee great Mariano Rivera, how to deal with fear from WNBA star Brittney Sykes, getting his

“Jerry Maguire moment” with football star Otis Anderson and helping baseball great Alex Rodriguez, who sought redemption.

Not all of his stories are about sports stars though. He talks about motivational guru Brendon Burchard teaching him about the qualities of extraordinary people – not being afraid to ask for help, collaborating with other talented, committed people and always measuring results.

John Gray, author of “Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus,” told him: “Don’t buy your wife a dozen roses. Buy her one rose a dozen times.”

Daily touch points are better than occasional ones.

Brandon’s mother was his role model. She used to ask him, “How do you eat a big elephant?” And then she would answer, “One bite at a time.”

That’s why Brandon set up “snackable goals” on the way to the finish line.

Brandon also delves into a topic I care greatly about – relationships. He asks himself four key questions that help him take inventory of his relationships: 1. Do I trust you?

2. Do I really know you?

3. Do you understand me?

4. Are you what’s best for me?

“You want people in your life who are smart, kind, loyal and reliable,” Brandon writes. Above all, he looks for loyalty in people.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Where and Why People ask me two questions.

“Where do you get the information for your stories” and “why are you doing them”?

I try to answer them.

I get most of the ideas for stories from my readers. When we are talking, they will relate some memories from earlier years or things they remember that bring a chuckle to them. Some of the memories are of things that maybe wouldn’t be appropriate to write about, however by telling most of the story, we try to keep it interesting. Sometimes the stories include names of people that are still among us or the person telling the story doesn’t want their name included as part of the story, in these cases, the story is changed “To Protect The Innocent.”

Why am I writing about the good old days? Many of us can remember a time when we lived in much different living situations. We tend to remember pleasant things. For instance, we don’t think about the the work and mess involving a wood cook stove, but we remember walking into the kitchen and being greeted by the smell of Ma’s

chicken roasting in the oven on Sunday or Saturday’s smell of Kaffee Kuchen or Pa’s raised doughnuts. Maybe one remembers the smell of Pa’s pipe smoke.

In my own situation, I remember as a really small kid, my mother was in the hospital and my aunt was cooking and house keeping for us. One day she served garden lettuce and forgot to wash it. I remember how crunchy it was and that my dad made no comment about it. During this same time, I had a pedal automobile, which I felt needed washing. We had a “slop pail” on the front porch, which was used to collect the potato peelings and other kitchen items. I carried the pail off the porch and down to the driveway, loosing part of the contents along the way. I then slopped the rest of the contents on the car. My aunt came to the porch, stood there with her hands on her hips and said “now I have to clean up this mess and you aught to look at yourself.” Dumb memory, but it is mine.

Our memories, including stories told by our grandparents, go back about 100 years. As each year passes, those who have these old memories are no longer with us and they take these old memories with them. That part of history is lost. I feel that if there is some form of written record, at least a few personal memories will be preserved.

Maybe current and future generations can get a feeling about how we lived in the good old days.

Brandon starts each day with an MVP list – Most Valuable Priorities.

This helps him keep his priorities in check. Just as important, he recommends that you make a “Not-To-Do List, such as constantly checking your email. This will save you a tremendous amount of time.

Discovering your own purpose starts with two basic questions: • What do you do best? Focus on what you do well in your professional life, but don’t ignore what you like to do. This is not an exercise in setting goals or plotting a career path.

• What do you enjoy doing that helps other people? Getting outside of your own interests can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Combining these two elements is a good start to determining how to move forward to living a life guided by purpose.

Without a purpose, we are like the man arrested for theft appearing before the judge.

Judge: “When do you work?”

Man: “Now and then.”

Judge: “What do you do for a living?”

Man: “This and that.”

Judge: “Where do you live?”

Man: “Here and there.”

Judge: “Young man, you are going

to jail.”

Man: “When do I get out?”

Judge: “Sooner or later.”

Obituaries Gene B. Toenies

Gene B. Toenies, age 90 of Melrose, passed away peacefully Friday, December 7, 2018 at Pine Villa CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Rev. Marvin Enneking officiated with Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating, and Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the lunch.

EuGene Bernard Toenies was born February 18, 1928 in Freeport, Minnesota to Henry and Anna (Willenbring) Toenies. He was united in marriage to Janet Budde on August 21, 1950 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Gene worked at Stearns Electric in Melrose for 37 years. He also drove chartered buses and school bus for 24 years at Mayers in Melrose and for the Richmond Bus Company of Richmond. Gene enjoyed playing cards, hunting and fishing and driving school bus. He can be remembered for his sense of humor and his quick wit.

Gene will be deeply missed by his children, Nancy Rausch of Grey Eagle, LeRoy Toenies and his wife, Judy of Akeley, Bryan Toenies and his wife, Wendy of Brooklyn Park, and Steve “Scooby” Toenies and his wife, Sara of Melrose; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers, Al Toenies and his wife, Marty of Royalton and Rich Toenies and his wife, Phyllis of Kelliher; sisters-in-law, Jen Toenies of Melrose and Rita Toenies of St. Cloud; nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Janet (Budde) Toenies; sons, Gary Toenies and Dave Toenies; son-in-law, Jim Rausch; parents, Henry and Anna Toenies, sisters and brothers, Marie Rau, Cel Toenies, Ed Toenies, Harry Toenies, and Lou Ann Kemper; brothers and sister-in-law, Louie Rau, Audrey Toenies, and Arnie Kemper.

Serving as casket bearers were Christopher Toenies, Parker Toenies, Brad Toenies, Avery Toenies, Troy Breitenbach, and Greg Yeater.

Cross bearer was Nancy Rausch, scripture bearer was Tara Yeater and memorial flower bearer was Beth Breitenbach. Gift bearers were Xander and Brax Breitenbach and Sara Toenies. The vocalist for the Mass was Christine DuHoux.

David and Susan raised four sons, of whom they were very proud. David was an avid outdoors man. He loved hunting and fishing, a loved passed on to all of his sons.

David enjoyed spending time with his boys and his extended family. He enjoyed farming and was a skilled mechanic. David was an artful wood carver and rock collector.

David is survived by his four sons, Justus of Wasilla, Alaska, Andrew of West Union, Nicholas (Jennifer) of Wasilla, Alaska, and Robert of Wasilla, Alaska; grandsons, Liam, Tannin, and Flint of Wasilla, Alaska; mother, Rose Uphus of Sauk Centre; brothers and sisters, Deborah (Kevin) Boynton of Big Lake, Thomas (Donna) Uphus of Sauk Centre, Karen (Michael) Stack of St. Paul, Sharon (Ken) Benson of Anoka, Mark (Barbara) Uphus of Sauk Centre, Mary Saxton of Sauk Centre, Peggy (Mark) Raitor of Sauk Centre, Cynthia (Arthur) Pearson of Tucson, Arizona, Joseph (Kate) Uphus of Sauk Centre, Katie Uphus of Minneapolis, and Andrea Uphus of Lewes, England; and many nieces and nephews.

David A. Uphus, age 65 of Meire Grove, died peacefully, surrounded by his family in song on Saturday, December 8, 2018 at the St. Benedict’s Senior Center in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 14 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A family inurnment will be held privately at a later date.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m.

David Anthony Uphus was born August 10, 1953 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Sylvester and Rose (Goerdt) Uphus. David grew up on the family farm southwest of Sauk Centre. He attended Sauk Centre High School and graduated in 1971, and later graduated from the Alexandria Tech School mechanics program. David married Susan Middendorf on October 16, 1976 and shortly after moved to Alaska to farm near Delta Junction. In 1982 they began operating, and in 1988 purchased a farm southwest of Sauk Centre. In 1999 they moved back to Alaska where they owned and operated a travel trailer park in the Matanuska-

Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, December 8, 2018 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church for Anne Wettstein, 92 of Long Prairie, who passed away Sunday at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Long Prairie. Fr. Omar Guanchez officiated and burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Anne was born on July 25, 1926 to George and Anna Pachan (Lasco) in Browerville. She married Raymond “Ray” Wettstein on September 17, 1946 in Browerville. The couple farmed near Long Prairie for 48 years where they raised their 6 children. Anne’s faith was very important to her. She was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel and a longtime member of the Christian Mothers. Family and friends

Marie “Ann” Roering The mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Marie “Ann” Roering, age 72 of Holdingford, was held Tuesday, December 11 at the Church of All Saints- St. Mary in Holdingford. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Ann died Friday, surrounded by her loving family, at the St. Cloud Hospital from complications of pneumonia.

Ann was born January 4, 1946 in St. Cloud to Elmer and Johanna Marie (Athen) Aronson. She grew up in Rockville and married Kenneth Roering on July 30, 1966 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holdingford.

The couple lived in St. Joseph for a short time and then moved to Holdingford where

Raymond P. Woitalla, age 72 of St. Anna, died peacefully surrounded by family on We d n e s d a y, December 5, 2018 at his home near St. Anna, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, December 10 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna with Rev. Greg Mastey officiating. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.

Raymond Peter Woitalla was born February 15, 1946 in St. Anna, Minnesota to Alois and Mary (Kotzer) Woitalla. He graduated from Albany High School and after school joined the U.S. Navy for four years.

Ann lived the rest of her life. She was a homemaker and raised her 10 children. She enjoyed playing 500, bean bag, going to the casino, watching birds - especially eagles, fishing and spending time with her family.

Ann was a loving and caring person who will be missed by all. She was a member of the Church of All Saints-St. Mary and the St. Mary’s Christian Women.

Ann is survived by her children; Joan (Clint) Nelson, Henderson, TX; John Roering, Albany; Cindy (Wayne) Norberg, Royalton; Eugene Roering, Holdingford; Jim Roering, North Prairie; Jenny (Jason) Zwilling, Sauk Rapids; Judy (Robby) Schiffler, Albany; Josh Roering, Bowlus and Becky (Jeremiah) Smith, Albany. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Kenny in 2011; daughter, Lisa Gerads; brothers, Elmer Aronson, Albert Aronson, Harold Aronson and sister, Alvina Sandquist.

Raymond was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna from the day he was baptized into the church. He also served as an usher for 25 years. He was also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and the Legion Honor Guard.

Raymond enjoyed farming, gardening, antique collecting, and automotive restoration. He loved being “Papa” and spending time with his grandkids.

Raymond is survived by his wife of 45 years, Barb Woitalla of St. Anna; children, Mark (Mindy Stolley) Woitalla of St. Cloud, Jacqueline (Robert) Deters of Albany, Timothy Woitalla of Holdingford, Marilyn (Joseph) Laughlin of Craver, Benjamin (Jennifer Fischer) Woitalla of Avon, and Sarah (Dustin) Schroeder of St. Joseph; mother, Mary Woitalla of Albany; 13 grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, John, Helen Rakotz, Don “Butch”, MaryAnn Heitzman, David, Joe, Diane Lacey, Mark, Richard, and Duane.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, Alois Woitalla in 1972.

knew her as loving and caring. Besides the many family and farm responsibilities, Anne always remained active. She kept a beautiful garden and made the best homemade bread.

She and Ray loved to travel and were active in a snowmobile club. Anne enjoyed playing cards and bingo. She continued to bowl well into her eighties. She was able to live independently up until her last six months.

Survivors include three sons, Donald (Sue), Edwin (Nancy) and Anthony (Karen Glen) all of Long Prairie; three daughters, Karen (Lee) Busch, Browerville, Sandra (Tom) Voller, Long Prairie, and Ella (David) Koehn, Alexandria; a sister, Evelyn Jonckowski; brothers Edward (Doris) and Alex (Judy) Pachan, sister-in-law Margaret Pachan; brother-in-law Charlie Buhl; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray; daughter Carol Ann Wettstein; brothers John (Louise), Andrew (Charolette) and Joe Pachan; sisters Helen (Art) House, Emma Buhl and Mary (Gerald) Nelson and brother-in-law Bob Jonckowski.

However, to his uncle Jerry Pesta in Long Prairie and the Felling Farms in Elrosa he was more than a worker, he was family. Kevin was known for his funloving personality and kindness towards others. Even through all of his recent health struggles, Kevin focused on his concern

The Grey Eagle-Swanville Knights of Columbus Council presented Father Scott Pogatschnik, the Director of Vocations of the St. Cloud Diocese, with 6 checks totaling $3,000.00. Dear Motor Medics, I first heard of your show while reading our local newspaper and started to listen to the podcasts on your website. While listening, I heard you mention that some vehicles have circuit board failures of the wiper motors and this will cause them to not operate when it is wet but they will operate when it is dry such as using your windshield washers. My vehicle is a 1998 Chevy ½ ton 4x4. Is this one of those vehicles and if so, how hard is it to repair?

Your vehicle is one of the ones that can suffer from wiper failure when wet.

The cause is moisture intrusion into the motor circuit board housing that can hinder proper operation. To repair the wipers the board needs to be replaced.

You should check with a GM dealership because there may be some extended coverage to repair this item. To find out just call and give them your vehicle identification number and they can check for you. If there is no coverage you can do the job yourself with minimal tools and time. Make sure you verify that the board is the issue and not something else before you replace it. The board is a basic bolt on part. You may check with your local shop, the cost to repair the wiper board problem is usually very affordable to have done.

where it does not see road salt or really cold winters and with 60,000 miles it still looks like brand new. We have had all of the maintenance done following the severe service intervals in the owner’s manual and then some. Last week the brakes started to act up. While trying to stop, the pedal will get very hard to push down and you can’t stop without both feet on the pedal. We had it checked at a local shop and they said the brake booster which also controls the antilock brakes was failing. They found one they could order and the cost was over $1000.00 to replace it. We are considering the repair only because the van is so nice but the price seems steep.

The brake booster is part of the abs and electric. When it fails it is a very expensive repair but there may be a silver lining for you. On some of the vans there was an extended free repair due to the safety nature of the failure that was offered from the manufacturer.

Grey Eagle Township December 3, 2018 Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 pm. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 5, 2018 minutes to the board. Ray made the motion to accept the minutes. Mike made the second. Minutes approved.

Ron asked to change the order of the agenda to cover the Boxelder Trail issue. A representative for the Medingers explained that what was needed was to clear the title issue so that the Medingers can market the property. Discussion was had about access to the property and property lines. He asked about conveying the property to Medingers, then they in turn would be expected to further convey to Folta and Calls. The township could sell the property, however, that would not resolve the title problems. Also, the DNR would need to be informed. After more discussion it was decided to view the property so that board members could see the property in question. This will take place on 12-7-18.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November. Claims list included claims 3259-3275 for a total of $4,315.89. Mike made the motion to approve the claims; Ray made the second, Motion carried. Mail included CLC farm forum, medicare information, Drainage and water conference and a DNR letter. Two CD’s are set for renewal in December. Mike made a motion to let them renew. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Ray stated he was happy with repairs on 335th, but it was already damaged. Ron suggested that the Township send a letter to the land owner to get repairs done and that it be kept clean. Ray asked if he could have signs printed to inform residents that there will be no dumping in road right of ways. A question came up about campers on a property on Breezy Drive.

Erv H. talked about needing a signed document each time he does work in the townships roadways to determine whether or not a wetland is involved. Ray asked about the weight restriction signs, it was agreed to go with the same as the county has.

Erv H. presented the snow contract for the upcoming season – up slightly to $97.50 an hour.

Ray made the motion to accept the contract, Mike made the second. All in favor, motion carried.

Additional agenda item:

Mike reported on the fire board meeting. The department may purchase a new truck, however funds are available to cover the costs.

A resolution was made to designate the Town Hall as the Polling Place for elections in 2019. Motion was made by Ray, Second by Mike. Motion carried.

Adjournment: Motion by Mike to adjourn the meeting. Ray made the second. Meeting adjourned at 9:30 pm.

Upsala City December 3, 2018 The City Council meeting was called to order at Upsala City Hall by Mayor Rollie Johnson at 7:00 P.M. The pledge of allegiance was said. On roll call members present were: Mayor Rollie Johnson, Brian Lange, Dennis Westrich, Joan Olson, and Lana Bartells.

People present: Morrison County Record reporter Sheila McCoy, Councilmember elect Crystal Benson, Shelly Schumer, Wendy Rene, Fire Chief Jay Baggenstoss, First Responder Seth Strassberg, Fire Captain Bill Koopmeineres, First Responder Vice President Garrett Doucette, Public Works Director Frank Koopmeiners, and City clerk/ Treasurer Michelle Stevens.

Minutes: Lange moved to approve minutes from November 5, 2018 Regular City Council Meeting, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

Lange moved to approve minutes from November 8, 2018 Meeting certifying the election, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Presentation, Citizen Appeals: Snow Removal on Main Street: Wendy Rene questioned the procedure on clearing the snow on Main Street and expressed her concern about the safety. She also questioned whose responsibility it is to shovel the sidewalks.

Westrich explained how the Main Street gets cleared after the sidewalks are shoveled, the MNDOT plows are through, and the street is cleared of vehicles – usually in the evening after the snow is done falling.

Economic Development: Economic Development Specialist Reva Mische could not attend tonight’s meeting.

Maintenance Report: Koopmeiners reported on water and sewer levels.

He discussed the quote for an impeller for the lift station. He recommends to replace the impeller when the lift stations are serviced in the fall.

He discharged the sewer ponds only once this year and pre-

sented the lab results.

Koopmeiners also stated the water tower is due for cleaning and painting.

Fire Department Report: The Minutes of the Fire Department were presented.

Lange reported they held their meeting last week; the Fire Department recommends Jay Baggenstoss as Chief for 2019.

Olson moved to appoint Jay Baggenstoss as Fire Chief for 2019, 2nd by Bartells. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Chief Baggenstoss reported to the Council the following to be leadership in the Fire Department.

Baggenstoss also explained that the department needs to replace their outdated air rescue bags; he will bring quotes to the council at the January meeting.

First Response: The First Response Team recommends the following for officers on the First Response Team: President: Steve Hansen Vice President: Seth Strassberg Secretary: Garrett Doucette Treasurer: Amber Koopmeiners Safety Officer: Kyle Breth Training Officer: James Warga Bartells moved to approve the officers for First Response as presented, 2nd by Olson. Motion carried unanimously.

The First Response By-laws Committee will be meeting; they would like to know policies concerning board membership.

Council directed Stevens to create a proposed board membership policy for the January meeting.

The First Response Team will be hosting a meet raffle for Morrison County Food Shelf at Bullfrogs Dec. 7 at 7:00 p.m. Appreciation to Paul and Kathy’s Grocery, and Cindy Phillips for helping make this happen.

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the December Calendar.

Planning Commission: The commission approved a building permit for Hagstrom’s 32’ x 32’ shed located at 217 Hickory Avenue.

UCDC: The Upsala Community Development Committee is working on a theme for this year – they have fun plans lined up for Friday evening of Heritage Days.

Bartells reminded the Council of the annual Holiday Lights Contest will be held December 13 with the judges being last year’s winners: Mark Gilles, Larry Bartells and Jen Servatius. The winners of the contest will receive $100, $75 & $50 in Upsala bucks

respectively.

There will be a new contest this year with the businesses. The same judges will judge the store fronts on their holiday decorations on the same evening. With the winners receiving $100, $75 & $50 in Upsala bucks respectively as well.

Safety Committee: Safety Committee presented their report.

7:47 Public Hearing – Consider Proposed Ordinance # 28 Fire Dept.

Mayor Johnson recessed the regular City Council Meeting at 7:47 p.m.

Johnson opened the public hearing to hear comments or concerns about the proposed ordinance #38 – an ordinance relating to fire prevention and control, establishing a Fire Department, proving penalties for violations.

Comments from the Public: Shelly Schumer shared that the Hillcrest apartments do not have an address number on their building.

Lange moved to close the Public Hearing, 2nd by Olson.

Motion carried unanimously.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council Meeting back to order at 7:51.

amendments made to Ordinance #38, 2nd by Westrich. Motion carried unanimously.

New Business: Newly Elected Officials Training: Bartells and newly elected Councilmember Crystal Benson are registered for the League of MN Cities’ Newly Elected Officials Training in Brainerd.

Dogs Running at Large: Mayor Johnson shared concerns from the various neighbors about dogs running at large in the city.

Johnson explained the contract with the Morrison County Humane Society is expensive; and is hoping that the residents will take responsibility for their dogs so the City does not need to contract with the Humane Society.

Board of Appeals and Equalization Training: Johnson explained that everyone needs to go online before Feb 1, 2019 and become certified to be on the Board of Appeals and Equalization.

Inflow & Infiltration Ordinance: There are several homes that have sump pumps that pump their basement water into the sewer system. The City would need to have an Inflow and Infiltration ordinance in place before it chooses to check individual homes.

N o r m a n Reinbold, age 87 of rural Long Prairie passed away at his home on Thursday e v e n i n g , December 6, 2018 with his family by his side.

On October 28, 1931 a son was born to Joseph and Amanda (Voight) Reinbold in Reynolds Township, Todd Co., MN and they named him Norman Leslie. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. He loved farming and life in the country and continued to farm his entire adult life. On December 19, 1951 Norman was married to Letitia Jane Robinson at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie. They lived and farmed in Todd County west of Long Prairie on County 36. Norman also worked for the Reynolds Creamery for many years hauling canned milk. Norman loved working with his farm animals, especially the cows and always had a good farm dog close on his heels. He loved watching his children and grandchildren

grow. He also attended their sporting events and enjoyed playing card games when they were over for a visit. Norman also enjoyed listening to music at any event he attended, including fairs, festivals, and threshing bees. He always had the radio tuned to his favorite country stations.

Norman loved his family and was so appreciative of their help in allowing him to spend his final days on the farm, especially the care of Chuck, Connie, and Carolyn which made this possible.

He is survived by his children, Bob (Susan) Reinbold of Henning, MN, Paul (Fran) Reinbold of Long Prairie, Connie (Chuck) Sukola of Prior Lake, MN, Joseph (Luanne) Reinbold and Carolyn (Donnie) Middendorf, all of Long Prairie; 15 grandchildren; 6 honorary grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are his parents, his wife, Jane in 2014; 3 grandchildren, Becca Sukola, James & Andrew Reinbold; daughter-in-law, Janice Reinbold and sister, Doris Van Valkenburg.

Funeral services for Norman will take place on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church in Long Prairie. Interment is at the Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie with his grandchildren as honorary bearers. Active bearers are Reed Reinbold, Matt Reinbold, Anthony Reinbold, Adam Hansen, Michael Latzke and Jeffrey Mattson. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Dave Says -By Dave Ramsey Dear Dave, I’m on Baby Step 4 of your plan. I’m debt-free, and I’m currently putting lots of money toward retirement. Now, I want to go back to school and get an MBA. I could pay for school with cash, but that would delay buying a home.

My parents have offered to help out financially, so do you think I should accept their offer?

-Isaac Dear Isaac, I don’t have a problem with this, if they’re doing well enough financially to afford it, and the help comes in the form of a gift. If they’re borrowing the money to make it happen, then the answer is “no.” If they want to loan you the money, the answer is “no.” A loan between family members, or even friends, isn’t help—it’s a trap for both parties.

But hey, if they’re in good enough shape to gift you some money to help with the MBA or a home, that would be an incredibly generous thing to do.

I think it’s so cool when people work hard, make smart decisions, and manage their money well to the point they can do things like this for others.

It sounds like you’re in a really good place, Isaac. Pay cash for school, and if you can’t buy a home outright when the time comes, make a down payment of at least 20 percent. That way, you’ll avoid having to pay private mortgage

insurance!

I recently stopped contributing to my 401(k) temporarily in an effort to help us build an emergency fund, but things are moving slowly. We also have $25,000 in stock. Should we cash out the stock, and use the money for an emergency fund?

-Nate Dear Nate, Yes, that’s what I would do.

Basically, your emergency fund is in stock right now. That’s not a good place to keep an emergency fund, because you never know when life will throw unexpected expenses your way or the stock market will go down.

I would cash out that stock as soon as possible. Put the money in a simple money market account—one with check writing privileges and no penalties for early withdrawals. You always want your emergency fund to be safe and easily accessible. Then, make sure you keep pushing forward and take care of Baby Step 4, investing for retirement; Baby Step 5, save money for college if you have young children; and Baby Step 6, pay off your home early.

Baby Step 7 means building wealth and giving like crazy. These things are easy once you have the other Baby Steps out of the way. Good question, Nate!

• Older drainfields often become “water logged” and no longer drain efficiently creating a freeze-up potential.

Finally, here are a few more tips: • Keep the turf over your drainfield in good shape. A thick green lawn does a terrific job of insulating your drainfield.

• Do not park cars, boats, campers etc. over your drainfield. Compaction from heavy vehicles allows frost to go deeper into the soil and parked vehicles prevent snow from making contact with the ground. Snow is a great insulator!

Hopefully, we’ll get our share of snow this winter and few of us will have any problems. But if you do have issues, contact your local septic system maintainer for assistance. We hope you have a trouble free winter.

December 8: At 23:39 received a report of a vehicle in the ditch on 190th St., near County 59, Long Prairie. Deputies arrived and found Michelle Randall of Alexandria had fallen asleep and lost control of her vehicle. Randall entered the ditch and struck a tree. Randall was not injured and was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. Randall’s vehicle sustained severe front end damage.

December 12: At 10:18 Travis Ritter (37) of rural Sauk Centre reported a burglary at his property located in Leslie Township. The burglary occurred sometime between 12/10/18 and the morning of 12/12/18.

Bitz and Piecez -By Pastor Bitz Our Righteousness: Jeremiah 33:14-16

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord.” (Jer. 33:14a) The days have come. Jesus has come and He is our righteousness. Righteousness is the quality or state of being righteous. So what does it mean to be righteous? Being righteous is characterized by uprightness or morality. My preferred definition is that you are righteous when you are right with God.

Today the concept of being upright and morally good is up for debate and this is bound to happened when societies turn to source other than the Creator for moral truth. Societies and especially freer societies need a moral grounded population to function. Without divine authority right and wrong and even the laws that govern a population become subject to the whims of human desires. Jeremiah prophesied that the Promised One would “execute justice and righteousness in the land.”

During Jesus’ life and his followers after his resurrection have executed a certain level of social justice and righteousness in the land. To bad in our day Lady Justice can stand blind folded in our court rooms but the 10 commandments have to go.

The ultimate purpose of the Promised One was not to bring social justice and righteousness but to be our righteousness.

Once an individual is right with the Creator of heaven and earth he is free to help make the world around him more righteous and just and Christian do this. It is this moral truth that Christian carry out of our churches, into our homes, from our home into our workplaces and advocate to

be instilled in our societies laws. Through Jesus’s life, death and resurrection believers are made righteous in God’s eyes and want to live righteously in creation so why does our world insist we leave our faith in our homes and churches?

The problem is that those who have rejected God’s righteousness want the freedom to determine what is right and just themselves. Mankind desires to do what it feels is right and good even if it contradicts God’s design for His creation.

Therefore God, the creator of heaven and earth must go. This is exactly why Darwin developed a theory of origins that didn’t need God. Too bad life is far too complicated to ever be explained by pure chance and survival of the fittest. Doctrines our unbelieving world holds to because they don’t want God telling them what’s right and just.

The righteous branch of David has come and he is Our Righteous. As we prepare for the coming of the Promised One and his final return this advent season we use his first coming, his birth in Bethlehem to help us celebrate and share the reality of God. Without our savior, on his own it is understandable that people would want nothing to do with God because we have done a terrible job care for his creation.

In Jesus our Righteousness we are made right with God and can help bring righteousness and justice to our land. Amen.
