Te a m w o r k might seem like a complicated subject, but to some creatures it comes naturally as a way to survive and to expend the least amount of energy.

According to a BBCNews Online story, scientists taped heart monitors to great white pelicans.

These birds had been trained to fly behind a light aircraft and a boat, and a team was able to observe them during their flight.

Pelicans, it is known, fly in “squadron” formation, or in a “V,” and they flap in time with their leader. Scientists, now able to observe and gather data from the heart monitors found that the birds’ heartbeats were lower when they flew in formation than when they flew solo. This was because they were able to benefit from each other’s air streams. They were also able to glide more.

It seems that there is a lesson here, and it’s not for the birds. Animals of all types evolve certain behaviors because it helps them to migrate, feed or survive more easily. The entire group benefits because less energy is required to perform the great task at hand.

In human terms, even the most seasoned pilots need a control tower and ground crew.

Why is that? I can think of no single feat that was accomplished without a little help. From the greatest minds in the world to the most successful corporations, no one can honestly claim they did it all alone. It’s often said it takes “a village to raise a child.” I believe that village is also necessary to contribute to any level of success in adulthood as well. This world

is simply too big a place to go it alone.

A story in the Harvard Business Review illustrates the importance of teamwork at every level. While many Westerners might think that consensus is characteristic of Japanese culture, institutionalized conflict is an integral part of Japanese management.

“At Honda, any employee, however junior, can call for a “waigaya” session.

The rules are that people lay their cards on the table and speak directly about problems.

“Nothing is out of bounds, from supervisory deficiencies on the factory floor to perceived lack of support for a design team. “‘Waigaya’ legitimizes tension so that learning can take place.”

That example emphasizes the importance of every member of the team and how a real team should function.

Each member should be able to contribute strengths and ideas; otherwise the concept of team is meaningless.

Obituaries Lucille Alice Lemke

The Mass of Christian burial, celebrating the life of Lucille A. Lemke, age 78 of Sartell, formally of Albany, was held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 9th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Fr. Michael Naughton, OSB officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery. Lucille died, surrounded by her family, Wednesday at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell.

Lucille was born May 13, 1935 in Pierz to William and Florence (Perusse) Altenhofen. She grew up in Pierz and then worked as a nanny in the twin cities where she met Jerome Lemke. The two were married on June 11, 1954 in Mitchell, SD and they settled in Albany. Lucille was an Avon Lady and she tended bar at the

Lyle Alden Ahrendt, 88 of Long Prairie (formerly of Clarissa) died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the CentraCare Health System in Long Prairie. The funeral for Lyle will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2013 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend; burial will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. The visitation will be on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Clarissa and one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Thursday.

Lyle was born November 1, 1925 in Hendricks, Minnesota to Albert & Emilie (Eickhorn) Ahrendt. As a young man, Lyle moved to Sioux City, Iowa and it was there that he met and married Vivian Marie Stoner

Lucille was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and a former member of the Seven Dolors Christian Mothers.

Lucille is survived by her children, Mike Lemke, St. Cloud; Pat (Lynn) St. Cloud; Bill (Brenda) Lemke, Melrose; Cheryl Nieman, Rockville, Tim (Mary) Lemke, CA; Greg (Corinda) Anaheim, CA; JoAnn (Steve) Boelz, St. Cloud; Charlie (Lisa) Lemke, Melrose; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Betty (Ron) Fyten, Pierz; Art (Jeanette)Altenhofen, Robbinsdale; Willie (Sam) Altenhofen, St Paul Park; and Jerome Altenhofen, Hopkins.

Lucille is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Jerome on August 14, 2008, her brothers, Leander Altenhofen, Charles Altenhofen, Vernon Altenhofen; and three grandchildren, Angela Marie Lemke; Sara Marie Lemke and Micah John Lemke.

Lyle is survived by his children, Lawrence, Roland, Steven (Eleanor), Mathew, Jeff (Liane), Timothy (Sara), Becky (Aaron) Kunerth, Michelle Lenz (Marlin Hukriede), 36 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild, brother-in-law Raymond Olejniczak and his good friend Randy Espree.

John A. Smieja, age 73 of Burtrum, died unexpectedly and peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2013 at his home in Burtrum, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m.

Friday, December 13 at St. John The Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville with Rev. Ronald Dockendorf officiating. Interment will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls following the lunch.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m.

Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Swanville. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.

John Alfred Smieja was born June 26, 1940 at his childhood home near Royalton, Minnesota to Frank and Emily (Kroll) Smieja.

He graduated from Royalton High School in 1958. John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps May 22, 1959 and was released with an honorable discharge April 12, 1963. On June 18, 1966 he married Diane Arnold at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton. He worked at S.J. Louis Company until his injury on May 1, 1990. At this time his life changed as he was confined to a wheelchair. This did not stop him; he chose to live a full and independent life. He

was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

John enjoyed hunting and being outdoors, and most of all, watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow.

Survivors include his children, Tony (Diane) Smieja of Burtrum, Ken (Lynette) Smieja of Burtrum, Ann Marie (Scott) Denzer of DeGraff, and Julie (Mike) Lambrecht of Burtrum; nine grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren; sisters and brothers, Valeria (Dave) Manders of Forest Lake, Irene Brown of Loveland, Colorado, Bernard (Annette) Smieja of Hackensack, Theodore (Darlene) Smieja of Fort Ripley, and Veronica Smieja of Loveland, Colorado; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Diane Smieja on April 15, 2013; brotherin-law, John Brown; and niece/Godchild, Tina Poegel.

Serving as casket bearers will be Ken Smieja, Tony Smieja, Austin Smieja, Avery Smieja, Kristen Smieja, and Kaelin Smieja.

Cross bearer will be Nathan Lambrecht and scripture bearer will be Kiley Smieja.

Gift bearers will be Tyler Smieja and Shane Lambrecht. Honorary bearers will be Ashley Fladung, Kiley Smieja, Tyler Smieja, Nathan Lambrecht, Shane Lambrecht, Remmi Jensen, Cooper Jensen, Nickallis Fladung, Miley Fladung, and Nathan Fladung .

Edmund “Eddie” Joseph Krych Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Edmund “Eddie” Joseph Krych, age 94 of Holdingford was held at 11 AM Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at the Church of All Saints– St. Hedwig in Holdingford.

Father Gregory Mastey officiated and burial took place in the parish cemetery following the mass. Eddie died unexpectedly at St. Benedicts Senior Community Thursday evening with family at his side.

Eddie was born October 3rd 1919 on a farm in Morrison County near Harding to Joseph and Agnes (Gallus) Krych. He married Rita Pintok on June 27, 1944 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic church in Opole. He has lived in the Holdingford area since 1935.

Eddie worked as a farmer his entire life. He also was a school bus driver, as well as a milk truck and bulk tank driver for Nentl’s and the Holdingford Creamery. He was an active member of St. Hedwig’s Catholic Church where he volunteered as an usher for over 35 years, and a trustee for over 8 years.

Eddie will forever be remembered as a selfless, compassionate, and hard working family man. He made a point to put others before himself his entire life. Eddie always enjoyed life. Music was a part of his life. He thoroughly enjoyed playing the guitar, trumpet, and harmonica. He also had a passion for sports, especially baseball and boxing. He will also be remembered for his unique sense of humor and strong hand shake. “Put her in the vice.”

What gave Eddie the most joy in life was his family. He treated each of his children and grandchildren as individuals which he loved so very much.

Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Rita Krych, Holdingford; his children Joseph (Karen) Krych, Plymouth; Jerome Krych, Sartell; Janet Berscheid, Foley; James (Jan) Krych, Holdingford; Jeffery (Ann) Krych, Holdingford; his 12 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Agnes Krych, his step-father John Marsolek, his brothers Peter, Stanley, Ted, and Leo Krych, his sister Frances Thomsen, step sister Agnes Marsolek-Jendro, step brother Albert Marsolek, and infant sisters Amilia and Eleanor Krych.

Jack McDermond

J a c k McDermond born January 4th, 1930 died December 6th, 2013.

J a c k McDer1mond, 83, of Nashwauk passed away Friday, December 6th at his home.

He was born to Mearl and Hilma (Marty) McDermond on Jan. 4, 1930 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. After graduating from Bemidji High School he served in the US Navy. Once his time in the Navy was complete he moved to Nashwauk where he lived for 57 years. Jack worked as an oiler for LTV Steel until he retired in 1986.

Marcia Mary Weber

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marcia Mary Weber, age 84, of Albany, will be at 11 AM, Thursday December 12, 2013 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany. Father Michael Naughton, OSB will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery immediately following mass. There will be a visitation at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church 1 hour prior to the service.

Marcia was born on December 30, 1928 to Warren and Regina (Gans) Weber in St. Cloud, MN. Marcia passed away peacefully under hospice care at The Legends of Heritage Place in Sartell on Saturday, December 7th. She attended St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing and became a registered nurse in 1950. She worked from 1950-1959 at the Charles T. Miller Hospital in St Paul; from there she spent 6 years as a Registered Nurse in Casper, WY. Her time in the nursing field involved caring for newborn and premature babies.

He is survived by his granddaughter Lucy (Eric Eilertson) McDermond of Bowie MD, brother Edward of Pengilly MN and special friend Emma Kapla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris (Peanuts) Olson McDermond; and one daughter, Gayle McDermond.

Jack loved the outdoors and anything with a motor. Jack and Peanuts were members of local snowmobile and fourwheeler clubs.

Jack could always be found in his fish house on opening day of ice fishing. During the summer Jack could be found at dawn on area lakes catching his limit of sunfish.

In recent years Jack and Emma enjoyed taking the bus to various local casinos. Jack was never much of a gambler, but enjoyed the social aspects of the trip.

Family and friends will miss his easy going, charismatic personality and the jokes he always had to share.

From 1965-1976, Marcia’s mother worked as the Stearns County Coordinator on aging, establishing new groups of senior citizens in their home areas. Marcia provided transportation for her mother’s organization by taking her everywhere she needed to go.

Marcia was a past President of the Albany American Legion Auxiliary, and was awarded the State Auxiliary Unit Member of the year in 2006. Marcia was very well known for the time she devoted to both the Poppy and Daffodil flower sales.

Marcia spent over 20 years in volunteer service in the Pharmacy Department at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in St Cloud, accumulating over 5,000 volunteer hours. She was an active member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and a member of Christian Mother’s Society. Marcia was elected a member of the School Board as well as the Albany City Council.

Marcia is survived by her brother, Paul (LaVonne) Weber, Le Center and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Warren and Regina Weber, infant sister, Mary; brother, Warren (Marian) Weber, sister Elizabeth (Richard) MacDonald, and nephew David Weber.

Dear Dave, What would you recommend for 401(k) contributions while getting out of debt?

-Chaz Dear Chaz, I recommend putting a temporary stop to investing while you’re getting out of debt. Lots of people are shocked by this advice, because they’re afraid of missing out on the wonders of compound interest or their employer’s match. But the key word here is “temporary.”

On November 13, the Upsala FFA chapter hosted the Region II Horse contest.

The contest is one of the largest in the region, hosting seventeen teams from all over Region II, which stretches from Upsala as the southernmost chapter, to Duluth, Grand Rapids, Blackduck, Staples, and beyond. Over sixty FFA members made the trip to Rocking R Farms in Foley, who were kind enough to host the enormous contest. Long Prairie won the team contest, with Brainerd at second, Upsala at third, and Staples Motley in fourth. With this finish, our team moves on to the state competition! In the individual contest, Brandon Bundy from Long Prairie placed first, and our own Audrey Schleper placed second, earning a trip to State Convention as an individual. Anna Woidyla placed 8th. This was Anna’s first year participating, and she is in eighth grade at Upsala. The Region II Horse Contest is one of the largest in our region, and we were happy to host it. Upsala Sr. High Student of the Month Upsala Area School would like to congratulate Josiah Lojovich on being selected as the November Senior High Student of the Month.

Josiah is the son of Steve and Lisa Lojovich of rural Upsala. He is the youngest of five children. His older siblings are Jason, Rachel, Ruthann,

and Raina.

Mr. Lojovich is involved in the Fall Play, Spring Musical, Knowledge Bowl, Choir, and Band. While these activities keep him active, he still makes time to work at Red’s Irish Pub in Swanville, participate in youth activities at his church, and work hard to be on the A Honor Roll.

One activity that he gains much experience from is directing movies at church.

He has also volunteered at the library and as a sound technician for various activities.

One of his favorite classes is choir.

He enjoys singing and ending his day with his friends. Choir Director, Denise Cheney states, “I have had the pleasure of having Josiah in choir for three years. It has been fantastic watching him mature from that timid young gentleman, who’s voice had just changed, to the confident leader he is today.”

Josiah has had many lead roles in the drama productions at UHS. He enjoys making people laugh. Drama director, Dan Cheney, says, “It’s been a joy to work with Josiah throughout his high school years in the drama club. He has so much talent and seems to be able to strike the perfect balance of having fun and taking the production seriously.”

When asked about his future plans, Josiah stated, “I would like to move to California, direct movies, win an Oscar, and live in a house.” If anyone can make it out in California, it would be Josiah.

Update of state economy, petro production & more

For the fifthstraight time, a budget surplus has been forecast for Minnesota.

These major projections are released two times a year, in November and again in February, and the one released last week was especially impressive.

It calls for a surplus of just over $1 billion at the end of the 2014-15 biennium, some 19 months away.

If these numbers hold true, it would allow the total payback of the school shift to the tune of $246 million and also the replenishing of the state Airport Fund for $15 million. And it would still leave a surplus of around $825 million.

Already, there are proposals for what to do with this potential “extra” money, but it’s far too early in the budget cycle to actually spend any of it. The first thing I would support is the repeal of over $200 million in business-to-business taxes that were passed last session. This includes the sales tax on farm repairs and tax on stor-

Addressing the annual meeting of CHS in Minneapolis last week, CEO Carl Casale told those in attendance that the “boom years are over” in the areas of grain and energy. He was referring to lofty profits made by both farmers and agribusiness in the buying and selling of grain and refined fuel products. “But,” Casale added, “we expected that to happen, and we must position ourselves and adjust to this changing marketplace.”

On another topic, he said that CHS, like many other companies, is having a challenging time in securing new employees to replace those who are retiring and also as they expand various segments of their business. Casale called it a “big challenge” and mentioned a program his company will be expanding in the future.

He said, “There are over 230,000 retirees from the military every year, and over half of them have some kind of rural connection. We see that as an excellent source of new employees for CHS.” Those of us old enough to remember

the gas crisis of the early 1970s and the long lines at filling stations have heard much talk over the years about the United States and its dependence on foreign oil. For a long time, well over half of our petroleum needs have been supplied by other countries, many of whom are not the friendliest to us. Well, that’s finally changing, and a big reason is the rapidly growing production in America. It’s estimated that by 2015, our country will be the largest producer of crude oil in the world. A major reason for the resurgence in American energy production is the Bakken field in North Dakota. It’s estimated that in the next five years, production in our neighboring state will GROW by 500,000 barrels per day. Nationally, that growth is expected to approach three million barrels a day and, as a nation, we should be producing over nine billion barrels a day by 2017.

An interesting note about the oil being produced in North Dakota is that it’s known as “light, sweet crude,” which makes it even more valuable because of its lower refining cost. That characteristic does have a down side however, as this type of crude oil, when refined, produces more gasoline and less diesel fuel

than other “heavier” types of crude. And with demand for gasoline decreasing in this country and the demand for diesel fuel growing, the challenge becomes one of producing enough diesel to satisfy the market and being able to sell all the gasoline that’s also produced. Research shows that vehicle-miles driven per capita peaked in this country in 2008 and have decreased since. That fact, along with cars getting better mileage, accounts for the drop in gas demand. Just the opposite is true of diesel, with nearly all large commercial engines using that type of fuel.

In addition, auto makers will introduce around 40 light-duty vehicles that run on diesel fuel by 2015.

Local Municipality Minutes Grey Eagle Township December 2, 2013 These are unapproved minutes.

Call to Order: Ron Frericks called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. The pledge of allegiance was recited.

Members Present: Ron Frericks, Ray Bense, Mary Ann Primus, & Mike Rohe.

Agenda Approval: A preliminary agenda was presented. Ron asked if there were additions to the agenda. Addition was the Aspen Drive. Ray made the motion to accept the agenda. Mike made the second. All in favor. Motion carried.

Approval of Minutes: The clerk provided copies of the November 4, 2013 minutes to the board. Mike made the motion to approve the minutes as written. Ray made the second, all in favor. Minutes approved.

Town Clerk’s Report: Clerk presented the claims list for November.

Claims list included 7 claims for a total of $104,679.83, includes new CDs. Ray made the motion to approve the claims. Mike made the second, Motion carried unanimously. Clerk shared mail received this month.

Treasurer’s Report: Mary Ann Primus presented the treasurer’s report as follows: Beginning Balance as of November 1, 2013: $218,525.19; Checks cleared: 10, $4,315.08; Deposits including interest: $100,839.23; Balance as of November 30, 2013: $315,049.34; Outstanding Deposits: 0.00; Outstanding Checks: 0.00; Cash Available: $315,049.34; CD Balance: $103,146.60.

Ray made the motion to accept the treasurer’s report. Second by Mike. All in favor, Motion carried.

Road and Bridge Report: Erv H. reported on the beaver problem on 116th, he put the screen up in front of the culvert. Erv H. still needs to install some curve signs. Discussion on the letter from attorney on Aspen Drive, it was decided to respond this was not a township road.

Additional agenda items: Ron shared information from Todd County Board of Adjustments on upcoming meeting, one, which will be dealing with solar energy systems, and commercial communication tower facilities will be held on Dec. 5.

The 2013 Fire Board Meeting was held Tues. November 19th at 7:00 pm. Mike reported there was some concern for calls that were not necessarily rescue but the 911call was made and they needed to re-

spond.

Swanville City November 5, 2013 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, November 5, 2013. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Jay Bartkowicz, Tim Grittner, AJ Johnson and Jim Molitor. Also present: Mike Rude, reporter Liz Verley, and Brian Zapzalka.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held October 8, 2013 were read. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the minutes as read.

Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given.

A motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Jim Molitor to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mike Rude, city engineer, gave a report on the 2013 water project.

Roads are near completion with tarring. Third Street east has first layer of black top, the second layer will be applied next spring. Curbs and sidewalks will be finished this week.

Black top entrances to the driveways on the project will be put in next spring. Alley by the mill will be completed next spring for the same proposal amount as quoted by Tri-City Paving.

Resolution #131105 Adopting Assessment for the 2013 Water Project was looked at and discussed.

After discussion Tim Grittner made a motion to adopt resolution #131105.

Jim Molitor seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Disbursement #4 in the amount of $324,868.53 for Larson Excavating was looked at. Tim Grittner made a motion approve disbursement #4.

AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, except Jim Molitor. Motion carried.

Mike Rude brought to council’s attention that Steve Lafontaine, from Minnesota PFA, will be making a project audit on Thursday, November 7 at 9:30am. Mike and the city clerk will meet with Steve and go

over paper work that has been completed thus far and make a tour of the project. Council is invited to attend if they like. The audit could take up to two hours.

The city maintenance man has given his verbal resignation notice to the Mayor. There was discussion; it was then decided to discuss the maintenance position in a closed meeting after the regular monthly meeting has adjourned.

Jessie Hedin has turned in 54 hours for watering the plants and trees on Main Street during the summer months. Mayor Peterson made a motion to pay Hedin $15.00 an hour for the work done and the use of her four wheeler. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. AJ Johnson objected.

The rest of the members voted in favor, motion carried.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Tim Grittner made a motion to approve the claims. Jay Bartkowicz seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held December 3, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by AJ Johnson and seconded by Tim Grittner to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:45 p.m.

Julie Hollermann, City Clerk/ Treasurer Swanville City Emergency Meeting • November 13, 2013 An emergency meeting was called on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. The meeting called to order at 6:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, Tim Grittner, AJ Johnson and Jim Molitor. Absent: Jay Bartkowicz.

The purpose of the emergency meeting was to discuss the resignation of the city maintenance worker.

The city attorney was contacted on this matter. After discussion, Tim Grittner made a motion to pass a resolution accepting the resignation of the worker, which was verbally given to the Mayor on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. AJ Johnson seconded the motion. All members present voted in favor, motion carried.

Jay Bartkowicz abstained over the phone. A letter will be sent to the worker accepting his resignation and thanking him for his many years of service and good work he has done for the City of Swanville.

A help wanted ad will be posted for a full time Water/Waste Water Operator/Maintenance worker.

“Ashley Maciej has been named Swanville High School’s Volleyball Athlete of the Month for October. She is a senior and captain on the Bulldog volleyball team this year. Ashley is a hard working individual during practice and a strong leader on the court. Ashley is our starting Libero and has seen front row play as well. As a Libero for our Bulldog varsity volleyball team, she has accumulated 241 digs, 20 kills from the back row, and has an 86% serve receive on the year.

Zachary Meer of Albany recently performed in the annual St. Olaf College Christmas Festival in Northfield, Minnesota. Meer is a member of the Chapel Choir. He is a Social Work major. Meer is the son of Daniel and Sandra Meer and is a graduate of Albany Area Senior High School.

The St. Olaf Christmas Festival is one of the oldest musical celebrations of Christmas in the United States. Started in 1912 by F. Water is a critical ingredient of a winter-feeding program. There are excellent birdbaths with heating elements and thermostats available from bird feeding supply stores. The heated water is primarily for drinking. Don’t worry about birds freezing if they bathe on a cold winter day because native song birds seem smart enough not to bathe when the wind chill is 40 below.

Proud to support ‘5 percent campaign’

By Rep. Ron Kresha, District 9B As your Representative, I am proud to support reforms and increased funding for our long-term care facilities, particularly in Greater Minnesota. I have long stood for legislation supporting families. That’s why I’m proud to join a bipartisan coalition in support of “The 5 Percent Campaign.”

The 5 Percent Campaign is an effort to provide a longer overdue and much-needed increase to those who care for our most vulnerable citizens. The average wage of a long-term care worker is near the federal poverty line, and an increase is needed to encourage more Minnesotans to pursue and stay in careers in long-term care.

committed workforce is imperative if we want quality care for our most vulnerable citizens in long-term care facilities. These residents have given so much and it is only right to step up and maintain their quality of care.

I believe a 5 percent increase would do just that, and would be a good first step to underscore our commitment to solving the “care gap” that exists in Greater Minnesota among our long-term care facilities.

As baby boomers continue to age, it’s estimated the number of people receiving disability services will rise to 83,000 by 2017 alone. Unfortunately, many facilities face high staff turnover, or are underfunded and at risk to close their doors in the next five years.

With recent news of a $1 billion budget surplus and an improved economy, we have the opportunity to have this serious conversation. Many long-term care workers haven’t seen a raise in six or seven years, even as prices have risen during the recession.

In 2013-2014 I supported multiple amendments reallocating parts of the state budget to give a small increase to our longterm care facilities. Unfortunately, those amendments were rejected, and long-term care workers were pushed aside in favor of wasteful spending like a $90 million new Senate office building, bailouts for the cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and more.

The 5 Percent Campaign enjoys bipartisan support, and I will continue working with any legislator of any party to go line-by-line through our nearly $40 billion budget to find the mere $86 million necessary to give our long-term care facilities the increase they deserve.
