long, perhaps it’s because you haven’t gotten the recognition you deserve.

At the risk of looking like a showboater, you have avoided taking too much credit or bragging yourself up.

You’ve done your job well – in fact, some projects would never have been so successful had you not been involved.

So how do you get people to notice?

Doing a good job isn’t enough to succeed at work. You’ve got to be visible to make a real impact. Here’s how to raise your profile in your workplace: • Talk to your boss. Make time to check in with your manager when you don’t have a problem to report or a question to ask. Don’t impose on his or her time; just discuss what’s going on, drop a suggestion or chat. This builds a routine of regular, informal communication that can enhance your boss’s opinion of you.

• Show up on time, or even better, be early. Regardless of how well you perform, if you aren’t there when the workday starts, you are missing prime time to connect and get organized for the day. Latecomers get noticed, but for the wrong reasons.

• Dress appropriately. Whether the office is formal or casual, your appearance makes a big impact. You’d rather be noticed for what’s in your head than what’s on your body.

• Network to share your expertise.

Get to know the most talented people in your organization, regardless of their job title or position. You’ll earn a positive reputation if you help them out whenever you can. You’ll establish positive relationships and gain a reputation as someone who puts the organization’s objectives first.

• Ask for help from people who can

mentor you. Seek advice on skills you need to develop from someone whom you admire and want to emulate. Let them know that you are ambitious and want to succeed.

• Be friendly. Your demeanor gives away your desire to get along. Make sure you project a pleasant attitude.

• Praise others. Sometimes the best way to gain credit is to give it. When you achieve something significant, make sure your boss knows who helped you (and that they know you’re sharing the information). Not only do you look like a generous colleague, but you’ll also be seen as a good team player.

• Volunteer. Don’t wait for your boss to ask you about joining a task force or committee. It’ll bring you into contact with colleagues outside your department and brighten your image throughout the organization.

• Take on projects that no one else wants. Every company has a few tasks that other workers are afraid to tackle.

The work still has to get done, and the boss is looking for a volunteer. Step up and get the job done, and you’ll be someone’s hero.

• Attend company events. Take advantage of opportunities to connect outside the regular workday and get to know your managers and co-workers on a new level. I love it when I see my coworkers mingle outside the workplace.

• Stay ahead of industry developments. Read trade publications and study market trends. Learn new technology that could benefit your organization. Be ready to move up the ladder before the next promotion opportunity arises.

10 Ways You’re Making Your Life Harder Than It Has To Be

Another driver cut you off. Your friend never texted you back. Your co-worker went to lunch without you.

Everyone can find a reason to be offended on a steady basis. So what caused you to be offended? You assigned bad intent to these otherwise innocuous actions. You took it as a personal affront, a slap in the face.

Happy people do not do this. They don’t take things personally. They don’t ascribe intent to the unintentional actions of others.

2. You’re the star of your own movie.

It is little wonder that you believe the world revolves around you. After all, you have been at the very center of every experience you have ever had.

You are the star of your own movie.

You wrote the script. You know how you want it to unfold. You even know how you want it to end.

Unfortunately you forgot to give your script to anyone else. As a result, people are unaware of the role they are supposed to play. Then, when they screw up their lines, or fail to fall in love with you or don’t give you a promotion, your movie is ruined.

Lose your script. Let someone else star once in awhile. Welcome new characters. Embrace plot twists.

3. You fast forward to apocalypse.

I have a bad habit of fast forwarding everything to its worst possible outcome and being pleasantly surprised when the result is marginally better than utter disaster or jail time. My mind unnecessarily wrestles with events that aren’t even remotely likely. My sore throat is cancer. My lost driver’s license fell into the hands of an al-Qaeda operative who will wipe out my savings account.

Negativity only breeds more negativity. It is a happiness riptide. It will carry you away from shore and if you don’t swim away from it, will pull you under.

4. You have unrealistic and/or uncommunicated expectations.

Among their many shortcomings of your family and friends is the harsh reality that they cannot read your mind

or anticipate your whims.

Did your boyfriend forget the six and a half month anniversary of your first movie date? Did your girlfriend refuse to call at an appointed hour? Did your friend fail to fawn over your tribal tattoo?

Unmet expectations will be at the root of most of your unhappiness in life.

Minimize your expectations, maximize your joy.

5. You are waiting for a sign.

I have a friend who won’t make a decision without receiving a “sign.” I suppose she is waiting on a trumpeted announcement from God. She is constantly paralyzed by a divinity that is either heavily obscured or frustratingly tardy. I’m not disavowing that fate or a higher power plays a role in our lives.

I’m just saying that it is better to help shape fate than be governed by it.

6. You don’t take risks.

Two words: Live boldly. Every single time you are offered a choice that involves greater risk, take it. You will lose on many of them but when you add them up at the end of your life you’ll be glad you did.

7. You constantly compare your life to others.

A few years ago I was invited to a nice party at a big warehouse downtown.

I was enjoying the smooth jazz, box wine and crustless sandwiches. What more could a guy want? Later in the evening I noticed a steady parade of well-heeled people slide past and disappear into another room. I peeked and saw a large party with beautiful revelers dancing and carrying on like Bacchus. Suddenly my gig wasn’t as fun as it had been all because it didn’t appear to measure up to the party next door- a party I didn’t even know existed until just moments before.

I do this frequently. Those people are having more fun. Mary has a bigger boat.

Craig gets all the lucky breaks. Ted has more money. John is better looking.

Stop it.

Always remember what Teddy Roosevelt said: “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

8. You let other people steal from you.

If you had a million dollars in cash under your mattress, you would check it regularly and take precautions to insure

Closure is a word for people who have never really suffered. There’s no such thing. Just try to “manage” your loss. Put it in perspective. You will always have some regret and doubt about your loss. You may always second guess yourself. If only you had said this, or tried that.

You’re not alone. Find someone who understands and talk to that person.

Reach out for support. If all else fails, try #10 below.

10. You don’t give back.

One way to deal with loss is to immerse yourself in doing good.

Volunteer. Get involved in life.

It doesn’t even have to be a big, structured thing. Say a kind word.

Encourage someone. Pay a visit to someone who is alone. Get away from your self-absorption.

When it comes down to it, there are two types of people in this world. There are givers and there are takers. Givers are happy. Takers are miserable. What are you?

it is safe. The one possession you have that is more important than money is time. But you don’t do anything to protect it. In fact you willingly give it to thieves. Selfish people, egotistical people, negative people, people who won’t shut up. Treat your time like Fort Knox. Guard it closely and give it only to those who deserve and respect it.

9. You can’t/won’t let go.

These are getting a little harder aren’t they? That’s because sometimes you have to work at happiness. Some hurdles are too difficult to clear by simply adjusting your point of view or adopting a positive mindset.

Do you need to forgive someone?

Do you need to turn your back on a failed relationship? Do you need to come to terms with the death of a loved one?

Life is full of loss. But, in a sense, real happiness would not be possible without it. It helps us appreciate and savor the things that really matter. It helps us grow. It can help us help others grow.

Obituary Joseph ‘Joe’ Wolbeck, Jr. Joseph ‘Joe’ Wolbeck, Jr., age 78 of Carlos, formerly of New Munich entered into eternal life on December 7, 2014 from Centracare Health in Long Prairie, MN. Joseph was born in Spring Hill Township, Stearns County, MN on January 7,1936 to Joseph B. and Mathilda (Straub) Wolbeck. He grew up in the country and helped his Dad run the family farm. Joe also worked at Franklin Manufacturing in St. Cloud.

On November 26, 1957 he was united in marriage to Marilyn Poepping. Joe worked for Eldred Fuchs Excavating doing caterpillar work in addition to dairy farming. After selling his dairy herd, he began his own gravel truck business called Wolbeck Construction.

Joe was proud of his large family of twelve children and worked hard to provide a good home for them. After Marilyn’s death in 1996, Joe worked another four years before selling his truck and retiring. He met Iona ‘Onie’ Schlosser (who had also lost her spouse, Melvin) and he soon danced his way into her heart. They were married on June 17, 2000 and made their home in rural Carlos, MN. Joe helped out at the family business, Rose City BBQ and enjoyed his time being a part of and watching the business grow. He was a member of Immaculate Conception parish in New Munich and belonged to a polka dance club.

Besides his favorite past time of dancing, Joe also enjoyed traveling, playing cards and going deer hunting each fall. He found great satisfaction

when working on wood projects out in his shop or watching a baseball game, for he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. He and Onie also enjoyed time in the kitchen making baked goods or doing garden canning. He was a kind and loving man whose presence will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. Blessed be his memory.

Joe is survived by his wife, Onie Schlosser Wolbeck of Carlos; eleven children, Andy & Sherrie Wolbeck of Sauk Centre, Gerald & Debbie Wolbeck of Hawick, Sharon & Lyle Barthel of Melrose, Danny Wolbeck of Grey Eagle, Linda (John Haberkorn) Wielenberg of Melrose, Dean & Jackie Wolbeck of Bowlus, Duane & Gail Wolbeck of Sauk Centre, Mark & Jeanne Wolbeck of Albany, Lisa & Jim Rudnick of Willmar, Lois & Shawn Mithun of Sauk Centre, Shawn & Stacie Wolbeck of Melrose; stepchildren, Mike & Karol Schlosser of Carlos and Eileen & Steve Goodwin of Eagle Bend; 32 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Ludwina Wolbeck of Grey Eagle; many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Church in New Munich with Fr. Roger Klassen officiating. Musicians are the polka band, The Nite Owls and flutist, Megan Rudnick. Megan will also lector along with Kelli Wielenberg. The Offetory gifts will be brought up by his grandchildren. Interment is at the church cemetery with honorary pallbearers being his many dancing friends. Active bearers are Brandon, Jason, Gerry, Justin and Eric Wolbeck, Ryan Barthel, Corey Goodwin and Shane Schlosser.

All Farmers Should Attend an area 2014 Farm Bill Crops Education Seminar in December and January In December and January the University of Minnesota Extension and the Farm Service Agency will begin a series of 73 free education seminars to help crop producers understand decisions necessitated by the 2014 Farm Bill.

Crop producers have until March 31, 2015 to make decisions required by the farm bill, including the choice among three new risk management programs. They will be locked into a decision that lasts five years.

Minors Get New Opportunity to Read Down Library Fines

Great River Regional Library (GRRL) is renewing the opportunity for teens and children to read down their fines and become active library users again.

The library system has planned a new Read Down Your Fines period for the two week holiday break beginning Monday, Dec. 22 and ending Saturday, Jan. 3. During that time, all 32 GRRL branches will welcome minors 16 and under with fines on their cards to read at the library. For each 15 minutes of reading, $1 will be waived from the fines on their accounts. In the case of very young children with fines on their cards, parents will be able to read down children’s fines by reading to them in the library.

“The new farm program is significantly different from the previous one and offers producers the choice of approaches to managing risk,” said Kevin Klair, University of Minnesota Extension economist and program leader at the University’s Center for Farm Financial Management. “This farm program is complex and making selections from the options will be challenging.

We encourage producers to attend an educational meeting, where we’ll cover national decision aid tools to run scenarios for their farm.”

Producers and landowners will need to work closely on program decisions, Klair added. For instance, yield updates and base acre reallocations are landowner decisions, he noted, while other program decisions are made by the farm operator.

The most recent was in October 2014, when just over 130 minors participated.

The average amount of time spent reading was one and one-half hours. The overdue charge on children’s materials is 10 cents per day. However, minors who check out adult materials are asked to pay adult overdue charges of $1 a day for DVDs and 25 cents per day for other materials. The maximum fine for each item checkout or renewal is $6.

Read down Your Fines is supported by library fundraising, which ensures that the loss of fines does not have a negative effect on budgets. It only applies to charges that have accumulated for late return of items. It does not apply to charges for lost or damaged materials. Young people who want to read down their fines should speak with library staff as local procedures may vary.

GRRL provides library services at 32 public libraries in Benton, Morrison, Sherburne, Stearns, Todd and Wright Counties. It provides Central Minnesota residents with nearly 1 million books, CDs and DVDs, 250 public computers, programming and information services.

He’s never been very good with money, so I was proud of him when he used his portion to pay off his debts. But then he went out and financed a van that I know he still can’t afford. I’m afraid he’s falling right back into the same old money problems, but I don’t know how to talk to him about it.

-Diana Dear Diana, I’ve learned, after years of writing books, doing a radio show and trying to educate folks about their finances, you can’t make people listen to you.

Even with what I do for a living I don’t throw my opinion around unless someone asks.

I think you’re smart for realizing there are some boundaries here. But there’s no reason you can’t create a situation where he can ask your opinion. You might begin with talking about some of the mistakes you’ve made in the past. This could help him connect with you, and feel more comfortable opening up about his own situation. Once he realizes you haven’t repeated the same mistakes, and have a better life for it, he might just ask how you did it. Then, the door is open!

But you can’t become preachy every time someone does something dumb. That will only hurt their feelings and cause them to tune you out completely.

Dear Dave, Our daughter wasn’t very responsible with money until she read your books. Now, she has really started turning her life around. Recently, she learned she needs to have some expensive dental work done. Since she just started trying to manage her money well, she doesn’t have enough saved up for the procedure or dental insurance right now. Do you think we should help by loaning her the money?

-Dianne Dear Dianne, I like what you’ve told me about your daughter. She doesn’t need to worry about dental insurance though.

You almost never get back what you put into those policies. It’s the kind of stuff a good emergency fund will cover. If she has invested her time and money into what I teach, I’d say she’s pretty serious about getting her finances in order.

If it were me, I’d make the money for dental work a gift, not a loan, for turning her financial life around. In your description you never mentioned anything about your daughter being lazy or unwilling to work. You talked about a young lady who’s just starting to build her life, and you’re rewarding smart choices. I think that’s a great idea and will have a major positive impact!

The Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 had fun practicing their rock climbing skills when they went to Halenbeck Hall at St. Cloud State University on Saturday, November 22nd. The Boy Scouts had the chance to try six different climbs, ranging from easy to quite difficult. One climb included walls that slanted outward, forcing the boys to really use their arms and legs to stay on the outcroppings. Another climb forced the Scouts to work through an overhang which presented its own specific challenges. Swanville Sr. High Student of the Month Tyler Evans has been chosen as the November Swanville Student of the Month for grades 10-12. He is the son of Kevin and Mary Evans. Tyler is a senior.

“Tyler Evans has been a student of mine for the past four years, and I feel he is an excellent candidate for student of the month,” states Margaret Peterson, Math teacher. Peterson continues, “Tyler comes into my classroom and makes me feel upbeat by just being there. He is willing to try the hard math concepts and he realizes they may not be completely understood without work on his part. He is taking college level courses and is willing to help his fellow classmates when they don’t understand.

Tyler is also an outstanding football player and he kept up with his schoolwork along with the extra-curriculars.

I feel he is a good role model for the younger students who I know look up to him both in sports and academically.”

Tyler has many interests including sports and just spending time with family and friends in a wide variety of activities. Tyler plans on attending college but has not chosen a school yet.

His school activities include serving on student council for all but one year of his high school career. Tyler is well

known for his athletic abilities, participating in basketball, football, and baseball throughout high school. He was a basketball captain as a junior and one of this years football captains. He was selected as All Conference in football for the past two years and last year All Conference for Basketball. He was also honored with being the Conference MVP in Basketball as a junior.

Adam Gerads, High School teacher and football and baseball coach states, “Tyler is an excellent student and an even better person. Being Tyler’s coach in two sports for the last four years, it is easy for me to see that Tyler will be successful in whatever he chooses to do in the future. Tyler often isn’t the biggest, strongest or most athletic kid on the field/court. However, he is usually one of the best players on the field/court because of his leadership abilities, positive attitude, competence of the game, and his drive to be the best that he can be. Those four things make him the great student and individual that he is today and will get him far in life!”

Tyler also volunteers his time and talents with coaching and helping with a variety of youth sports, and volunteering at his church and other events in the community.

Tyler is no stranger to awards having been an ExCel award nominee, Student of the Month honors three times previously, Social Studies Student of the Year and currently serving as Student Body President.

“Don’t stress about the little things, have fun and make memories that will last,” is his advice to fellow classmates.

Yogi Berra once said, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” That seems to sum up the journey before all of us in one way or another. We are constantly faced with making a decision about which way we are to go when we come to the “forks in life’s road.”

Each morning when we begin the day’s journey there is no assurance that what we intend to do will happen exactly as planned. Interruptions come from every side and what may have been peaceful and calm ends up being frantic and out of control. So, we are confronted with two ever present options: chose to have faith in God or be fearful of what is in us, in front of or around us. We are faced with the only two choices life has to offer: faith or fear. So, what does faith in God have to offer us?

In Psalm 27 David describes his Lord as his light, salvation and fortress.

As his light David knew that God would reveal His plan for him and dispel the darkness that might come over him. He also believed that God was, when he was writing this Psalm, his salvation.

This meant that God would deliver him from anything that would harm him or rescue him when things went badly. Not only at death, but as life unfolded before him. He also believed that the Lord was his strength - or stronghold - a place where he could take refuge and restore his soul when he was overwhelmed with life’s demands.

No wonder he proclaimed: Why fear anything?

Swanville Jr. High Student of the Month Freshman Alita Scherping has been chosen as the November Student of the Month for grades 7-9. Alita is the daughter of Allen and Tina Scherping. Alita is very active in school activities participating in volleyball grades 7-9, softball since the 6th grade, with plans to participate again this spring. She is currently in band. She has been active in theatre since seventh grade and recently participated in the play this fall. Alita is consistently on the Honor Roll.

Outside of school Alita is active in Just for Kix and Jr. Volleyball. She enjoys hanging out with friends and four wheeling. She volunteers during the Swanville Mid-Summer carnival.

Chantelle Frie, English teacher adds, “Alita is a pleasant, hardworking young woman. Alita arrives early to school every morning ready to face the day and its challenges. She works well with others, is always a willing and collaborative participant in class activities, and is one of the most diligent students I have ever known. Upsala Jr. High Student of the Month The Faculty of Upsala Area School is proud to honor Amber Biniek, daughter of Sheila and Charles Biniek, as the November Junior High Student of the Month. Amber also has two sisters, Ashley and Kristine.

Amber is involved in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She is also on the A honor roll. Amber is a great athlete and role model for our students. In her spare time, Amber likes to play basketball, softball, and volleyball. Her participation in these sports has contributed her success in the classroom by teacher

Amber’s favorite class is art. She likes art because she likes her teacher and says its fun. Road and Bridge Report: Ray reported that the 116th project was completed and that the new culvert should take care of the run-off issues. Mike made a motion to accept the new contract. Ray made the second. Motion carried.

Additional agenda items: Ron shared the variance notice received from Todd County, a landowner is requesting a parcel split.

The property owner with the posts in the road ROW did not respond and the Township Association suggested contacting the sheriff’s Department. Mike reported on the Fire Board meeting and informed the Board that the Fire Department has approved a new tanker truck.

Guests and Presentation: Department Reports: Maintenance Report, Frank Koopmeiners: Water usage was down for November and sewer usage is also down for the month at 3.57 hours/

day.

• Frank presented the pond testing results, all tests came back well below the limit.

• Frank informed the council that the light on the recreation building is out. It will be replaced with an LED light which is the most cost effective option for the time being.

• Frank continues to periodically flush the old school sewer line to keep it flowing while he looks to use a larger jetting machine to flush the line in the future.

• Both the Council and Frank agree that snow plowing and removal is going well so far this season • Public Works Assistant, Julian Herbes, wages were discussed with a positive review from Frank.

Motion made by Council Member Brian Lange and seconded by Council Member Joan Olson to approve a 5% wage increase beginning January 1st, 2015. Motion carried unanimously.

Fire Department Report, Lange: Minutes were presented to the council.

UCDC, Olson: The City will hold a Christmas Lighting Contest and judging will end Friday, December 19th. Prizes will be in the form of Upsala Bucks with first place at $150, second place at $100, and third place at $50. City Clerk Reva Mische will put an advertisement for the contest in the Hometown News.

Recreation Board: Johnson: Mayor Rollie Johnson informed the Council that the Recreation Building was replaced and converted to natural gas.

Unfinished Business: The Council held a discussion about updates regarding the 2014 Walnut Avenue Improvement Project. All construction work for the season has been completed and will recommence in the Spring with work on the lift station.

Haylee Vershure, Nic’s science teacher reports, “Nic Hollermann is a pleasure to have in the Biology classroom. He volunteers answers, asks questions, and offers entertaining anecdotes on a daily basis. His positive demeanor and smiling face contribute to a happy classroom environment. He is also the first student to ever convince me to eat a cricket! It is easy to see why Nic was chosen for senior high SOM. Way to go, Nic!” When asked what advice he has for his classmate, Nic said, “Do your homework, listen to teachers, and pay attention.” This advice seems to be working well for Nic.

Drive Safely this Snowmobile Season

As another snowmobile season gets underway, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources encourages snowmobilers to get this season off to a smooth, safe start.

Snowmobile trails in Minnesota opened Dec. 1.

Minnesota residents born after Dec. 31, 1976, must complete a DNR snowmobile safety training course before they can legally ride a snowmobile anywhere in Minnesota, including private land.

In a snowmobile safety course students learn about the machine, the laws, safe operation, ethics of the sport, and how to avoid the most common causes of snowmobile accidents.

DNR snowmobile safety courses can be completed by either attending a snowmobile safety training course from a DNR-certified instructor in a local community or by CD. To obtain the snowmobile safety training CD, or for general information, call 888-646-6367, 651-296-6157, or 800-366-8917, or email at info.dnr@ state.mn.us.

Snowmobilers should follow these safety tips: • Don’t Drink: Drinking alcohol before or during snowmobiling can impair judgment and slow reaction time. Snowmobilers who have been drinking tend to make poor decisions that can lead to injury or death. Alcohol also causes body temperature to drop at an accelerated rate, which increases the likelihood of hypothermia.

• Slow Down: Speed is a contributing factor in nearly all fatal snowmobiling accidents. Drivers should proceed at a pace that will allow ample reaction time for any situation. Remember, when

driving at night at speeds of 40 miles per hour and above you’ll easily “over drive” your headlight and won’t be able to stop in time to avoid a collision.

• Be Prepared: When traveling, tell someone the destination and return time.

Bring a map, a first aid kit, a flashlight, waterproof matches/lighter, compass and cell phone.

• Stay Alert: Fatigue can reduce the driver’s coordination and judgment.

Changing trail conditions are potential hazards to stay alert for to avoid injuries or death.

• Ice Advice: Avoid traveling across bodies of water when uncertain of ice thickness and strength of ice on lakes and ponds. Snow cover can act as a blanket and prevent safe ice from forming. Always remember that ice is never safe.

• Dress Appropriately: Use a fullsize helmet, goggles or face shield to prevent injuries from twigs, stones, ice, and flying debris. Clothing should be worn in layers and should be just snug enough so that no loose ends catch in the machine.

• Watch The Weather: Rapid weather changes can produce dangerous conditions.

• Bring A Buddy: Never travel alone. Most snowmobile accidents result in some personal injury. The most dangerous situations can occur if a person is injured and alone.

• Report Accidents: The operator of a snowmobile involved in an accident resulting in medical attention, hospitalization, death, or damage exceeding $500 must file a written report with the
