Let Lou Holtz turn your losses into lessons -By Harvey Mackay What’s on your A-list for reading right now? At the very top should be Lou Holtz’s autobiography Wins, Losses, and Lessons . . . It hit the New York Times bestseller list the first week it was off the presses. If you read just one book this year, pick this one. Its pages sizzle with the inside story of college athletics and coaching, but Lou’s real art is going through his list of life lessons with memorable clarity.

Lou Holtz is best known for having coached Notre Dame’s football team to nine post-season bowl games and a national championship over his eleven seasons there. Wherever he’s coached, the Lou Holtz magic shone at the helm of any campus gridiron squad. He’s the only coach in history to lead six different schools to post-season bowl games. Lou has been a personal friend for over 30 years, and I’ve always felt his character, determination and energy make him one of the most unique and outstanding individuals I have had the good fortune to know.

Winning has meant a lot to Lou. It often does to people who literally start with nothing. The West Virginia cellar home he was born in didn’t even have a closet. “We didn’t need one,” Lou recalls, “because I owned one pair of overalls and one flannel shirt.” Football was his passion from his earliest days, but looking at him, he was the last person you would expect to see on a football field. A scrawny eighty-pound kid with coke-bottle glasses, he begged to be in the lineup of his Ohio high school team. That meant facing tanks outweighing him by nearly 150 pounds! Lou was no star, but he made himself valuable by learning all 11 positions. That’s when he began developing his unforgettable list of lessons. Here’s a sampling:

“WIN is an acronym for, ‘What’s important now?’” If you want to win at anything, Lou asks, what sacrifices will you make to get the result? Some answers are easy. Even easy answers, though, can demand pain and hard work.

“Setbacks don’t define your goals, you do.” Lou’s path to a professional coaching slot included a job swabbing up blood off the floors of hospital operating rooms. He couldn’t even get a job as a high school coach at first. Later when he thought he had landed a spot at the University of South Carolina, the new athletic director fired him within an hour of their first meeting. “Have you thought about going into a different profession?” the director asked him. Still, Lou persevered.

“Discipline is not what you do to someone, but what you do for them.”

Discipline has been a passion with Lou from his Army days. He surely got enough of it apprenticing as an assistant coach at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. On his first day of spring practice at Minnesota, where he totally turned the program around, coach Holtz went ballistic after cringing at the sloppiness of the starting offensive huddle. “When the huddle broke,” Lou instructed them, “they were to clap authoritatively and in unison.” After the play, they were to speed back to the huddle, with no strolling.

You can tell a great book by its candor.

Lou shoots straight throughout. He tells all about his brief excursion into the pros, calls it the “most regrettable mistake” of his career and admits his “problems in the NFL were all self-inflicted.” He was also sacked as Arkansas’s coach for no apparent reason when his team achieved the best record in school history. Lou bore no grudges and held the man who fired him

in great esteem. That former boss helped Lou land the Notre Dame job years later.

Lou also remembers one poignant moment as Notre Dame coach when he sent in a young quarterback with a play and the admonition: “We have three points on the board, so don’t take them off.” It was one of the few games Notre Dame lost, but the lesson wasn’t lost on Lou: “When the last thought you give someone is negative, negative things usually happen.”

Lou Holtz today? “Grass is either growing or dying and so is a person,” he says. Folks like Lou Holtz never retire.

Currently he’s a top ESPN sports analyst and, according to the Washington Speakers Bureau, the leading motivational speaker in America today. Motivational? Lou shakes the thunder down for any audience privileged to hear him ... or read him.

Ever find yourself making a judgment regarding whether the husband or the wife was the boss of the farm you just passed? I find myself creating an imaginary judgment from time to time. If the farm buildings are numerous and the house is older, I think that maybe he is the boss.

However if there is a new house and tired, overused outbuildings, maybe she is the boss. Really makes no difference to me, but it helps to brighten up the boredom of the road.

When one looks back to rural housing, one will see fairly large families in homes that were less than 3 rooms. The original settlers didn’t have the financial ability to spend extra money on the dwelling. Due to the lack of medical advancements, the number of children in these houses seemed to rapidly increase. Somehow all of these children found a place to eat, sleep and find a bit of personal space. They had space to entertain visitors and relatives and history doesn’t tell us that everyone in the house had a terrible time because they were rather crowded.

One of my classmates in grade school, lived in a 2 room house with a loft in the roof area. The 3 boys crawled up a ladder to go to bed on the upper floor. They slept on the floor facing the open area above the kitchen for additional warmth. The newspapers tacked to the outside walls was the only insulation. These boys, plus one sister, grew up not thinking that they were somehow deprived because they grew up in a house that was quite small.

Fog Crash: December 7, 2020: At 6:06 a.m. the Stearns County Communications Center received a call from a female reporting she was involved in a single motor vehicle crash and had injuries.

Stearns County Deputies arrived on scene and found a Pontiac Grand Prix in the west ditch at the intersection of Co Rd 30 and Co Rd 174 in Oak Township, 4 miles southeast of the City of Freeport. Brianna Lange, 25 of Albany, was driving westbound on Co Rd 174 approaching the T intersection of Co Rd 30. Lange said she was unable to see the stop sign in time due to the dense fog limiting visibility and also causing icy roads. The Grand Prix slid off the embankment and landed upright in Getchell Creek.

The driver was transported to the Melrose Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Melrose Ambulance and Freeport Fire and Rescue.

My dad’s family had an upstairs in their house that had two sleeping rooms.

The four boys shared one bed in the first room and the two girls shared a bed in the other room.

Today many of these houses suddenly became inadequate when the kids left home. The new replacement home was much bigger and usually had most of the newest appliances available. The reason the new house was needed was so that there would be enough room for the grandchildren. Some discovered that while the grandchildren were younger the parents didn’t look forward to packing the kids, their food, blankets, clothes and all the rest of the necessities to spend a weekend at the grandparents.

In the years that followed, the grandkids formed their lives around the area where they live. Neighborhood, school, sports and their friends are now their lives and they don’t like to leave it, since they will surely miss something. Grandpa and Grandma now have a large new house that needs extra cleaning, heating and a yard that is bigger and needs much more care to keep in perfect condition due to “what will the people say.” Of course the insurance and taxes are probably much higher. Oh well, now there is extra room to hide from the spouse during disagreements.

There are some positive things to be said about getting back to basics, but in most cases we have gone beyond that way of life. Our older memories are frequently about living in the “basic life.” The youth of today frequently are unable to grow their own foods, sew their own clothes, preserve their own vegetables, process their own meats and maybe unable to plan and cook good food at home.

Hope those skills will not be needed for many years in the future.

FIRST RESPONSE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Upsala First Response Team is looking to add a few new energetic volunteer members to our team. No medical experience needed. The will to help community members when needed at any time of the day however is a must.

New members must complete all required training and be able to handle stressful fast pace situations. The Team is looking mainly for daytime availability and those looking to apply should live/work in the Upsala/Elmdale area.

Kerry Osberg, Art Instructor says, “I have known Sydney since she was in 8th grade- my first year as the art teacher here at Swanville. From the very start, I knew that she was an exceptional person. Sydney is bright, conscientious and she cares about the people around her. She always does her best and is willing to help others. I will miss her greatly after she graduates, but I am positive that she will move on to do great things!”

Sydney’s favorite thing about school is being able to see all of her friends. She advises other students “Corona isn’t fun, but make the most of it.”

Outside of school Sydney is active in her church youth group, volunteers her time at the Swanville Carnival and also at the Morrison County Humane Society.

Activities Director Aaron Gapinski adds, “Sydney VanRisseghem is an outstanding choice for the Student of the Month. Sydney works hard in her classes and is always willing to help out a student at school. She is great with the younger kids as well. Sydney is a leader in athletics and in the classroom.

She will go on and do great things because of her work ethic, her personality, and her leadership skills! Congratulations Sydney!”

Swanville Junior High Student of the Month

Swanville Public School is pleased to announce the November Junior High Student of the Month, ninth grade student Travis Bellefeuille. He is the son of Kris and Molly Bellefeuille. Travis enjoys participating in tae kwon do and hapkido, playing video games and collecting baseball cards. He states that he plans to go to college for criminal investigation and also plans on enlisting in the Marines.

Travis’s favorite thing about school is shop class. He has participated in football, track and theatre since seventh grade. He also recently joined the trap team and plans

to participate in robotics this winter. His advice to other students is “work hard at the things you believe in.” Outside of school he is extremely active in Boy Scouts. Travis is consistently on the A Honor Roll, has attained a second degree black belt in tae kwon do and an orange belt in hapkido.

Industrial Arts and Science teacher Joel Rieffer states, “I have had Travis in 6th grade Physical Science, 7th grade Life Science, Wood Shop and this year Super Mileage class. I am fortunate to have him in my class and look forward to having him in future classes. He always does his best when he is asked to do a project or assignments. I believe he is very deserving to receive student of the month. Travis not only does well academically, he is respectful and respected by his peers and teachers alike. He is a well-rounded individual and I feel he will do great things for our school, our community and himself.”

She participates in many school activities, serving on Student Council in grades 8 through 10, and also as a senior. She has been active in both volleyball and softball since seventh grade and played basketball in 7th through sophomore year. Beverly J. “Bev” Newman, age 77 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 at Bethany on the Lake in Alexandria, Minnesota.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, December 11 at River of Life Church in Sauk Centre with Pastor Kyle Peterson officiating. A family inurnment will be held at a later date at Hillside Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Beverly Jean Senenfelder was born April 28, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Joseph and Nora (Holm) Senenfelder. She attended Lyndale Elementary School, Jefferson Junior High School, and graduated from West High School in Minneapolis. Bev was married just out of high school and raised her six children. After getting divorced, she went to work on a dairy farm so she could be home with her children. Bev moved to Staples and attended Staples Vocational School and earned her certificate for Machine Technology. She worked as a machinist for over 25 years before retiring from Albany Machine Products in 2009. In 1998, Bev moved to Sauk Centre to be closer to her family.

She was a member of River of Life Church in Sauk Centre. Bev was passionate about animals and loved her cats, dogs, and horses. She enjoyed going fishing and horseback riding. She was also an avid collector of antique cookie jars.

Survivors include her children, William Newman of Savanah, Georgia, Jennifer (Mike) Kozee of Ohio, Rebekkah (Mike) Proell of Sauk Centre, Matthew (Janelle) Newman of Sauk Centre, Kathleen (David) Olson of Faribault, and Rachel Newman of Maryland; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her two cats and dog.

Bev was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marjorie Craft; and brother, William Senenfelder.

Beatrice B. Funk

Beatrice B. Funk, of New Munich, went to meet her beloved Lord on Friday, November 27, 2020. She passed away peacefully with her children by her side at CentraCare Health, Melrose, Minnesota. Beatrice was 101.

B e a t r i c e Bernice Rademacher was born November 8, 1919 in New Munich, Minnesota to John and Anna (Froehler) Rademacher. She was united in marriage to Edward Funk on June 2, 1942 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich.

Beatrice was a strong and loving woman, operating the family farm and raising 12 children for years after Edward died at age 50. She moved to the village of New Munich when her son, Art, took responsibility for the farm. There she had many friends, loved playing cards, tended her flower garden and fed her birds. She made it her mission to always have fresh flowers on the altar at the church.

Quilting was her hobby and she made over 100 quilts. Babies and brides got quilts. Family was everything to Beatrice and they adored her.

She had an amazing sense of humor, always willing to go along with mischievous antics of her fun-loving 12 children who helped fill her life with fun and laughter. She loved her grandchildren and always had time for them. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.

Beatrice was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in New Munich, the Catholic Aid Financial, St. Ann’s Christian Women Society, Saint Valeria’s Mission Group, Daughters of Isabella and she was a Crosier Apostolate. Her faith was very important to her.

Survivors include her children: Mary Ann (Mel) Kammers of Richmond, Dorine (Allen) Ebel of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Cel Funk of Alexandria, Rita (Roger) Scherping of St. Joseph, Rene (Tom) Pierskalla of Avon, Art (Kay) Funk of New Munich, Kathy (Tom) Ecker of Miltona, Ken Funk of New Munich, Ron (Carol) Funk of Sauk Centre, Fran (Elaine) Funk of Sauk Centre, Marlene (Tom) Altendahl of Villard, Vic (Patty) Funk of Clearwater, 49 grandchildren, 69 greatgrand children, 12 great-grand-stepchildren. She is also survived by her sister Mariette Mueller of Albany, and sister-in-laws Dorothy Rademacher of New Munich and Beatrice Rademacher of Sauk Centre.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward in 1970, parents, sisters, Aurelia Feldeward and Eileen Kuhl; brothers Virgil, Vernon, Silverius and Ralph Rademacher, brothers-in-law Nick Feldeward and Mark Kuhl and sisters-in-law Theresa and Marie Rademacher.

A private graveside service was held on Monday, November 30th at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in New Munich with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Joyce Krivanek

Joyce Krivanek, 83 year old resident of Upsala, MN, was called home to the arms of her savior with her husband, Bill and family by her side on December 4, 2020 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND. A Memorial service will be held in the spring of 2021 for all in the Upsala community, that she cherished so much, to attend.

Interment will be at the Community Covenant Church Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Little Falls, MN. Joyce Lorraine White, the daughter of Kenneth and Lucille (Sleight) White was born October 1, 1937 in St. Paul, MN. She grew up in the same small house with her parents and 6 siblings until graduation from Monroe High School in 1956.

After graduation, she worked for Montgomery Ward as a cook in their employee cafeteria and then for Univac until her marriage to her high school sweetheart, William (Bill) A. Krivanek, Jr. on September 6, 1958 at Olivet Methodist Church in St. Paul. The couple lived in St. Paul for a few years while starting their new family. Due to job promotions at St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Company where Bill worked, the family moved often. First to Detroit, MI; then Los Angeles, CA; and then Kansas City, MO. Their final move was to

David Lee Van Heel

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle for David Lee Van Heel, 73, of Grey Eagle who passed away unexpectedly surrounded by family at Sanford Health Hospital in Fargo, ND on December 6, 2020. The Mass Celebrant will be Rev. Robert Rolfes and the Concelebrant will be and Rev. Ronald Dockendorf. The family will receive visitors from 4-8:00 PM on Friday, December 11, 2020 at the church in Grey Eagle. Masks and social distancing are required while attending. Williams Dingmann Stein Chapel in Long Prairie have been entrusted for the arrangements.

David was born to Edward and Bernadine Van Heel in Little Falls, MN on June 15, 1947.

Growing up David helped his father farm near Grey Eagle, MN. He enjoyed anything with a motor and painting from an early age. He was an avid fisherman, especially loving to spear in the winter. David graduated from Grey Eagle High School in 1965. He enlisted in the US National Guard shortly after where he served 6 years. David was devout Catholic and was a lifelong member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

He was a brilliant idea man and inventor… a salesman that could sell you something you didn’t even know that you wanted. He invented and sold many different products for the motorcycle industry throughout the 1970’s. At one point, 2/3 of all motorcycle dealers in the country were his customers.

In the early 80’s, David did what was thought to be crazy by cutting a Cadillac in half and stretch it. Over the next 19 years he reconditioned and/ or built hundreds of limousines. In his later years he sold motorcycle eyewear, leather products, and accessories to motorcycle dealers all over the country.

David enjoyed spending time with his son

Upsala, MN in December of 1976. Soon after, the couple purchased the Trustworthy Hardware Store in Upsala, and the small town became their final and forever place to call home. Joyce demonstrated her love for Upsala and children by handing out candy to any children that came into the hardware store, babysitting for parents who had no other options, giving free haircuts to countless young (and not so young) kids, and most of all after retirement, playing Mrs. Santa next to her husband at the Upsala Lion’s Santa Breakfast every December.

Joyce was blessed with an angelic soprano voice and perfect pitch that allowed her to perform at countless funerals, weddings, church programs and patriotic ceremonies over many years. She was a devoted follower of Christ and member of the Upsala Community Covenant Church.

She demonstrated Christ’s love by volunteering at nearly every church function, taught Sunday school, and hosted anyone that had nowhere to go to join with her family for holiday meals. Baking was an enjoyed past time for her as she was known far and wide for her fabulous apple pies. When she did sit down and relax, it was to read her Bible, which was never very far from her reach.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bill of Upsala; sisters, Marilynn Kappelhoff (James) of North Branch, Sandy White of Albany; children, Bill (Ann) of Alexandria, Cheryl Warga (Bruce) of Holdingford, Tom (Stephanie) of Greenfield, and Susie Ripplinger (Paul) of Holdingford; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Kenneth, William, Roger, Robert; grandson, TJ Krivanek and infant granddaughter, Grace Ripplinger. whether it be sitting in the garage while Baron worked on something or going for a drive to no place in particular. He was an avid follower of politics. He also loved visiting with friends and family and reminiscing about “the good old’ days.”

David is survived by his son Baron of Grey Eagle, brothers: Dennis (Cathy Dunmire) of Grey Eagle, Daniel (Susan) of Alexandria and sister Sharon (Tom) Hell of St. Joseph, MN. He is proceeded in death by his parents Edward and Bernadine Van Heel of Grey Eagle.

He will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched and especially by the ones whom loved him the most.

Alma Marie Buerman

The Mass of Christian Burial, celebrating the life of Alma Buerman, age 75 of Albany, will be private. Alma died at the Mother of Mercy Campus of Care on December 3, 2020.

Alma was born April 29, 1945 in St. Cloud to John and Helen (Ressemann) Vogt. She married Theodore “Ted” Buerman in Richmond. The couple moved to St. Cloud for a short time and then moved to their farm south of Albany. Alma loved working with the animals and raising her children. She also loved dancing, gardening, making quilts, sewing and fishing. She worked for Betty’s Draperies in St. Cloud and then Dubow Textile. She loved her grandkids but never got to meet her grandson, Evan. She was a member of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church.

Alma is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ted Buerman, Albany; her children, Daryl (Krista) Buerman, St. Cloud; Brian Buerman, Minneapolis; Sandra (Roger) Gertken, Avon; and Gary (Jackie) Buerman, Mora. She is also survived by her brothers and sister, Eileen Blasius, Cold Spring; Ralph (Rita) Vogt, Richmond; Roger (Markell) Vogt, Aitkin; 5 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Cecile A. Zehrer

Cecile A. Zehrer, age 98 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A private Mass of Christian will be held at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rick Aubol officiating.

Cecile Ann Kleinschmidt was born March 22, 1922 in Lake Henry Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph, Sr. and Margaret (Laubach) Kleinschmidt. She married Conrad Zehrer on October 16, 1944 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and were married for 60 years. They lived in Sauk Centre where they farmed south of town for 40 years. The couple retired in 1984 and they moved north of Sauk Centre. After Conrad passed away, Cecile cooked for her twin brother for nine years. They both moved into assisted living at Fairway Pines at the age of 92.

Alberta E. Otte, age 94 of Sauk Centre, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, December 7, 2020 at the Fairway Pines Assisted Living in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 15 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Alberta Ella Gamradt was born February 20, 1926 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Albert and Ella (Kind) Gamradt. She was united in marriage to Harold J. Otte on November 28, 1944 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and was married for 57 years. They lived in Sauk Centre where they farmed east of town for many years.

Alberta also worked full time at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Sauk Centre for 31 years.

After retiring from the Home School in 1983, she managed the St. John’s Dining Hall in the Minnesota State Fair for 13 years, Gopher Prairie Dining Hall at the Stearns County Fair for 13 years, and was very active at St. Paul’s Catholic Church where she was a member and served as president of the Christian Mothers.

Alberta enjoyed gardening, flowers, and treasured the time she spent visiting with her friends and family.

Swanville City • November 10, 2020 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. The meeting was called to order 7:00 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Deb Wood, Norm Carlson, Jim Molitor, and Tony Maciej. Also present: Clif Allen, John Dragseth. Meeting recorded for reporter.

Minutes from the October 6, 2020 Swanville City Council meeting were reviewed. After discussion, a motion was made by Jim Molitor to approve the minutes. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Clif Allen, city engineer, reported on the city’s new water tower. The tower will be changing from the current 60,000 gallon tank to a 100,000 gallon tank. The loan would most likely go through MN Rural Development, with a grant for this project also. There was discussion where the new tower will be located. Allen is checking out the possibility of putting it in the Industrial Park to the north of Swanville. Allen will report back on the locations at the next council meeting. The Mayor and Council were in agreement to have the city engineer keep going with the water project analysis and to apply for the grants needed for the funding.

The CARES ACT funding was discussed.

Thus far, spending of the money include an automatic door opener was bought and installed on the Swanville Center, tv, electronic equipment and tablets for councilmembers to have Zoom meetings, sanitation stations, sanitizers for cleaning city buildings, and new park benches. There is $7,196.10 left to spend. Jim Molitor made a motion to give the city maintenance worker $1000.00 for extra cleaning that was completed in the park since the pandemic started, purchase an air exchanger and install in the park building and purchase more cleaning supplies. Darrel Peyton

Darrel Peyton, 86 of Long Prairie, passed away December 2, 2020.

Visitation will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 10 AM12 PM at Iten Funeral Home in Browerville; followed by a Graveside Service at 1:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Darrel was born December 30, 1933, in Lake View, Iowa to Leslie & Jennie (Jackson) Peyton.

He grew up on the family’s farm, enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing with his family, hunting, and trapping with his brother and friends. During his school years, Darrel enjoyed playing basketball with the FFA team. They lost only one game in three years. He was very active in 4-H and served as President of the FFA club. During the summer, he enjoyed exhibiting livestock and poultry at county fairs.

He married the love of his life, Darlene Johnson, on January 31, 1954. In April of that year, Darrel enlisted in the Army until March 1956.

He served in Germany and obtained the rank of Corporal. Soon after, Darrel and Darlene began farming near Sac City, Iowa. They were blessed with four children, Debi, Randy, Danny, and Jerry. In February 1963, they moved to a farm on Lake Latimer near Long Prairie, MN. Darrel crop farmed, raised black Angus cattle, and sheep. He also worked for Long Prairie Packing Company

in favor, Mayor Lange abstained. Motion carried.

The City Clerk informed the council letters have been sent to property owners with a 90 day overdue utility bill. The letters stated any property owner with an amount that is 90 days overdue will be sent into the county office and applied on their property taxes for 2021. This process can only be done once a year before the end of November.

The renting of the park building was discussed. At the end of the discussion, it was decided to not rent the building in the month of November. Executive orders from the State of MN will be followed for the building.

The unofficial votes were presented to council from the General Election. Out of 182 registered voters and 12 registered on election day, 170 votes were cast. The following is a summary of the total votes cast: Mayor 2 year term: Sandra Lange-150 votes, 4-write ins Two Council Members 4 year term: Norm Carlson received 139 votes, 23 write ins, the top write in: John Dragseth with 11 votes. Mayor Lange asked John Dragseth if he would accept the nomination. Dragseth accepted the vacant seat left by Deb Wood. When the official voting results are received by the clerk, the clerk will notify council members and the official canvassing paper will be signed by council accepting the returns from the 2019 general election.

Jake braking was discussed. It was decided that when there is jake braking observed, the license number of the trailer should be written down and the Sherriff’s office called and report the license number of the violator.

The purchasing of a new city lawn mower was tabled.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Norm Carlson made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Tony Maciej and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 8:25 p.m.

for many years. Darrel was a great steward of the land. He was awarded Todd County Conservation Farmer of the year in 1978 for developing terraces and waterways to preserve topsoil erosion. They raised their family to love and appreciate the great outdoors and farm life.

Family and friends enjoyed talking with him about hunting and reloading because of his vast knowledge. Darrel loved his restored antique tractors and was always ready to fire them up and go for a spin. He always looked forward to his annual Canada fishing trips that led to lifelong memories of remote camping, huge fish (caught and lost), scary rough water crossings, bears visiting camp, lost props on rocks, fishing in snowstorms, and allnight talks by the campfires.

Darrel loved to talk to people and always ready to learn something about them, where they lived, or about their culture. He and Darlene loved to travel, enjoying many exotic locations - from Alaska to the Caribbean to Europe. He enjoyed shooting sports, card clubs, cross-country skiing, and beating Darlene at cribbage.

Darrel had a great love for family and gave each of the grandchildren their own special nickname: Schnooks, Tutz, Red, Charlie, Speed, Buck, Squirt, Nic, Blossom, Shorty, Sam, Smiley, & Sparky. The pride and love carried with these names will never be forgotten.

Darrel is survived by his children: Deborah (Rodney) Garlock, Randy (Pam) Peyton, Danny (Deloris) Peyton, Jerry (Connie) Peyton; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and brother, Dale (Polly) Peyton.

Darrel is preceded in death by his loving wife, Darlene (Johnson) Peyton; parents, Leslie, and Jennie Peyton; sister, Sherry (Bob) Mason; and grandson, Preston Rohr.

John “Jack” Hasser

Military Honors were held Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Evergreen Cemetery, Long Prairie for John “Jack” Hasser, 73 of Long Prairie, who passed away November 30, 2020.

Jack was born August 2, 1947 in Long Prairie, MN to Gladys (Haskin) and John J. Hasser.

Jack attended Long Prairie High School, class of 1965. He joined the MN National Guard in 1966 and retired in 1988. He started with Hart Press in 1966 and retired from RR Donnelly after 42 years

in 2007.

On October 12, 1968 Jack married the love of his life, Una Kay Capkey. In their 52 years together, they had 3 children; Shelly Hasser of Dublin, OH; Cindy (Ron) Dalton of Long Prairie, MN and Jonathan (Rachel) Hasser of International Falls, MN; 4 grandchildren: Trisha Dalton, Cody Dalton, Naomi Dalton, Jack Hasser and 5 great grandchildren.

He is survived by his lifelong fishing partner, best friend, and brother-in-law Chuck (Delaine) Paul; siblings: Marilyn Tremblay of Pahrump, NV, twin sister Jean Nathe of St. Louis Park, MN and favorite “first cousin” Grace Jones of Long Prairie, MN. Jack was an active member at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. His favorite hobby was to spend time in his garden by the river and to keep up with his hobby farm, but also loved to fish whenever he got the chance.

Harlan & Lulu (Torkelson) Darkenwald

Harlan (age 95) and Lulu (age 92) Darkenwald, of Long Prairie passed away within hours of each other on the 7th & 8th of December after 71 years of marriage.

Harlan was born February 16, 1925 to August & Hattie ((Nyquist) Darkenwald in Edgeley, N.D. Harlan was drafted to the 67th United States Construction Battalion in September of 1943. In the Navy Seabee he fought and built airport runways in the Southern Pacific, which lasted until March of 1946. After the war, he attended the University of North Dakota graduating with a Business Degree.

Lulu was born on a farm near Strandquist on November 13, 1928 to Gunvol & Julia (Bjorlokken) Torkelson. She graduated high school in 1946 and moved to Grand Forks to attend Aaker’s Business College. Being persuaded by her friends to go roller skating at the local rink was where she met her future husband, Harlan.

They were married in Lulu’s country church near Karlstad on June 12, 1949. In 1957 they moved to Long Prairie and purchased a 4-lane bowling

alley. After a few years, they sold the bowling alley. Lulu worked at Cathedral Press in Long Prairie for 24 years. Harlan worked for the post office for 37 years before retiring.

Lulu was known for her amazing cinnamon and orange rolls and for being a wonderful cook and baker making sure everyone had a “little lunch.” Harlan enjoyed golfing and bowling. In his 80’s he would golf his age and play ultimate frisbee with his children and grandchildren.

Harlan & Lulu were both preceded in death by their parents and Lulu is preceded in death by 8 siblings.

They are survived by their children: Linda (Dick) Burg, Brian Darkenwald, Rhonda (Lee) Enger, Julie (Leif) Spore; grandchildren: Justin, Colin, Lisa, Mackenzie, Jocelyn, Caleb; great grandchildren: Ava, Eli, Noah, Jack, Harmony, Kaiden, Maisie, Octavia and Atlas.

A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie

and making things for his family. His pride and joy were giving rides to his grandchildren on the Ford tractor and some good-natured teasing. He is remembered for the love and care he gave to his wife and family, his smile, laughter and teasing, strong faith and his always telling his kids to “get home safe” when they were leaving.

He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Verena; children: Diane (Ken) Dold of Sauk Centre, Don (Audrey) Olmscheid of Paynesville, Rosann (Dave) Braegelman of Belgrade, Jim (Lorali) Olmscheid of Victor, Montana, Mark Olmscheid of Belgrade, Mary Beth (Dennis) Rath of Belgrade, Deb (Denny) Yoerg of Clear Lake, Ron “Butch” (Emmy) Olmscheid of Albany and Lisa (Jim) Meyer of Albany; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Olmscheid of Paynesville; 30 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; siblings, Rose Terres and Elmer (Marilyn) Olmscheid; sister-in-law, Norine Olmscheid and numerous nieces and nephew.

Joseph was preceded in death by his son, Steve; great-granddaughter, Addison; parents; brothers, Leander and Francis and sisters, Lidwina, Christine and Lucille.

Joseph M. Olmscheid, 93, of Melrose, formerly of Belgrade, died Monday, November 23, 2020 at the Melrose Hospital.

A private mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Joseph Michael Olmscheid was born March 18, 1927, in St. Martin, the son of Nicholas and Theresia (Bauer) Olmscheid. He attended country grade school near St. Martin. On October 19, 1948, Joe was united in marriage to Verena Kampsen.

This union was blessed with five sons and five daughters. They made their home in Elrosa where he farmed and hauled milk. In retirement, he worked at the Elrosa Elevator and did carpentry work. They moved to Belgrade in 2012 and just recently to Parkview Assisted Living in Melrose.

Joe was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was a member of Catholic United Financial. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, farming, and playing ball with the kids in the backyard. He especially loved time spent with his family, playing guitar for his family during gatherings, woodworking

The last thing you should do right now is steal from your future to buy more stuff. Find some kind of seasonal work. Even if you’re packing boxes or stocking shelves, you’re contributing to your household and easing

A couple of inexpensive gifts may not be out of the question, but as harsh as it sounds, presents are not a priority right now. It may be uncomfortable or disappointing for everyone, but it can also offer a bonding opportunity and a valuable life lesson.

Keep a positive outlook, and stick to your normal routine as much as possible in the days ahead. Wake up early every morning, and make a list of things you will accomplish that day. Update your résumé, start networking, and begin submitting applications like that’s your new job.

Dear Motor Medics, I have a question about radios. I have a 2014 Ford Escape and it has a radio in the dash that most of the time has no sound. When the sound is off the chime for the doors being open and lights on also do not work. Sometimes if I hit a bump the sound comes on but the display may go off so I can hear the music and chimes, but I have no way to control what is playing. I am used to the old-style radios with knobs to turn that come right out of the dash and have no idea what I am up against.

I thought about getting a used unit, but the local recycling yard says it has three parts and must be programed to work.

-Randy in Sioux Falls, South Dakota The radio set up you have is quite common now with a control panel and separate display screen which controls a unit behind the dash or in the trunk which is the actual radio receiver. Many times, there is also a separate amplifier too. In our own shop we see many of the screens fail and also the radio units followed last by the control panel but you must have it tested to know which one or ones need replacement before you install one. The radios in most vehicle must be programmed at a shop so keep that in mind when making repairs.

They have great heating and cooling systems to keep you comfortable wherever you want to drive. The engines also will start well in all temperatures if they are running well.

Keep that in mind though, running well.

Have you had this car tuned up lately? Are the filters all clean and belts and hoses in good shape. Parts that are weak from the heat will often fail in cold weather. Before you leave for the move or shortly after you arrive get the car checked over and prepared for the cold weather. Most people who have starting issues when moving to a cold climate have not done basic tune up issue or even a battery. Don’t forget to check that.

Looking in the mall for a cotton nightgown, I tried my luck in a store known for its hot lingerie. To my delight, however, I found just what I was looking for.
