Resourcefulness = “of coursefulness” -By Harvey Mackay A firm needed a researcher.

Applicants were a scientist, an engineer and an economist.

Each was given a stone, a piece of string and a stopwatch and told to determine a certain building’s height.

The scientist went to the rooftop, tied the stone to the string and lowered it to the ground.

Then he swung it, timing each swing with the watch. With this pendulum, he estimated the height at 200 feet, give or take 12 inches.

dropped the stone from the roof, timing its fall with the watch. Applying the laws of gravity, he estimated the height at 200 feet, give or take six inches.

The economist, ignoring the string and stone, entered the building but soon returned to report the height at exactly 200 feet. How did he know? He gave the janitor his watch in exchange for the building plans. He got the job.

Of all the skills I admire, being resourceful is among the most important.

I don’t want to be surrounded by ordinary thinkers. Rather, I want to be with people who, if they don’t know an answer, know how to get it. Or if we have a problem, know how to solve it.

Resourceful people think outside the box and visualize all the possible ways to achieve things. They are scrappy, inventive and driven to find a way to get what they need and want.

As one of my very favorite authors, Napoleon Hill, said: “A resourceful person will always make the opportunity fit his or her needs.”

Here are some characteristics I look for when determining a person’s resourcefulness: • Open-minded. Know what is and isn’t possible. Embrace different possibilities, people and views to

broaden your perspective. Expand your comfort zone by trying different things.

• Self-confident. Believe that you can handle any problem you encounter or that there is a solution for any problem you encounter. Visualize yourself overcoming any obstacle.

• Innovative. Resourcefulness is about optimizing what you have to work with. A fun example is the old TV show “MacGyver” starring Richard Dean Anderson. There wasn’t any situation that MacGyver couldn’t handle, any problem he couldn’t fix, be it with his Swiss Army knife and a roll of duct tape.

Think: it’s the hardest, most valuable task any person can perform.

• Adaptable. Don’t box yourself into doing things a certain way. Experiment.

• Persistent. Try things many different ways until you succeed. Never give up. Many things can get in your way, but don’t let them until you get what you want or achieve your goal. Practice until you get it right.

• Optimistic. If you have the right attitude, the solution is easier to find.

You have to believe that you can get through any issue and come out better and stronger.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne The Plane He drove to town in his Model ‘A’ almost every day.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s a Model ‘A’ was rare enough that you would stop to take a look as it drove by. It’s appearance was not uncommon, but one would find a little grin on your lips wondering what the occupant of the vehicle would share as the news subject of the day.

This fellow would try to get a current copy of a newspaper, find an unusual story and try to impress someone with the fact that he knew much more about the subject than they did. For instance, one day he said they were now “putting nails in tires.” Actually the new discovery was studded tires. Usually the other person had not yet read the story and did not care enough about the subject to read a story about it anyway.

His appearance was somewhat memorable. His height was just above 5 feet and his width was about 4 feet.

His usual attire was bib overhauls along with a long-sleeved flannel shirt worn in all seasons. He wore wire-rimmed glasses, which supported extremely thick lenses. He also constantly carried a 3 inch stub of cigar, never lit, but used as an aid to point at a listener to help share an intellectual point he was making.

He typically stopped at a gas station in town to buy either $.75 or $.85 of gas, which allowed him to share his ideas with those at the station. He frequently told those at the stations that they should come out to his place and “look at my airplane.” Since many in town had heard about the plane, some individuals began to wonder if he actually owned an airplane or possibly had built a plane.

He also could be seen taking motion pictures with his “movie” camera. It was a camera which needed to be wound up with a crank, after which it would be aimed and able to take pictures until the wound up spring made the photography stop until it was rewound. The film was then sent to be developed and placed on the back seat of his Model “A”, which included about 79 other developed films. He had a problem, which was that he didn’t have a projector. He discovered one of the service station

owners had a projector and after about a year of harassment the station owner’s son took him to the owner’s house, so he could look at his movies. There were many more developed films than the son expected and they were primarily boring, uneventful street scenes from around town and especially no pictures of an airplane.

After several years, one of the guys in town decided that it was time for someone to go out to his place and take a look at the airplane. It was a warm summer Saturday afternoon and since sometimes one needs to look around for some excitement in his life, he decided that he would take his camera out to the fellow’s place and bring back some pictures to satisfy the local curiosity.

When he arrived, he was told that they would have to walk through a grassy hay-field, then crawl through a fence to a wooded area. After some searching around in the woods, they found his “airplane.” It was some kind of a motor along with a jumble of small framework. The visitor said, “is this your airplane?” Whereupon the guy said, “ya, all I need are wings and a fuselage and she’d fly.”

Rev. Dave Christenson to serve Grey Eagle UMC and Peace United of Long Prairie

By Robert Kutter, GE UMC Lay Leader Bishop Bruce Ough of the Minnesota Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has appointed the Reverend David Christenson as pastor of the Grey Eagle United Methodist Church and Peace United Church of Long Prairie, and acting on the behalf of the congregation the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee has confirmed the Bishop’s intention.

Rev. Christenson began serving the churches on August 5, 2018, as an interim pastor for the next 11 months.

Christenson grew up on a farm in the Benson area and has been an ordained ELCA Lutheran pastor for over 25 years. As an intentional interim ministry specialist, he has served congregations in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska.

In addition to his ministry experience, he has over a dozen years of professional experience in the field of corrections and criminal justice serving as a probation officer and a counselor for the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

He brings to the pulpit a unique style of preaching that combines sto-

ries, visual aids, role-plays and the use of “surprise guests” to bring the gospel to life in new and exciting ways. He completed his Doctorate Degree in Ministry in 2008 with an emphasis on preaching. His leadership style is one of involving everyone in the process and open and honest communication with one another. He says he will bring energy and excitement to the congregations and challenge them in new and exciting ways.

When not engaged in ministry, Christenson likes to spend time with his wife and two adult daughters. He is an avid sports fan of the Minnesota professional teams and his beloved Mankato State Mavericks. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, cross-country skiing and “double” golf.

His wife is an Advanced Practice Nurse at the VA hospital in Sioux Falls and teaches at Augustanna University in Sioux Falls.

He assembled many other peasants with spades and timbers, and they began digging a deep hole next to the rock. The rock was propped up to prevent its rolling into the hole. When the hole was deep enough, they removed the props and the boulder dropped into the hole, where it rests to this day below the street level.

The rock was covered with dirt, and the rest of the earth was carted away. Since he could not remove the rock above the ground, he put it underground.

This story, shared by Vladimir Karapetoff, is a perfect illustration.

When Leningrad was laid out in the early 18th century, many large rocks had to be removed. One especially large piece of granite was lying in the way of a main road. Ralph Joseph Marty

LeRoy W. Hoeschen, age 90 of Freeport, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, August 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Daniel Walz officiating and Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Albany American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m.

Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Saturday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the St. Joseph’s Society and Catholic United Financial at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.

LeRoy was born and raised on the family farm which he took over until 1988. The couple moved to St. Anthony for ten years and relocated to Freeport in 1997, while LeRoy hauled livestock until 2004.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Albany American Legion Unit 482, Catholic United Financial #101, and St. Joseph’s Men’s Society. LeRoy enjoyed playing cards and recycling metal and aluminum cans.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Hoeschen of Freeport; children, Bonnie (David) Kellner of Cold Spring, Ann (James) Stommes of Albany, John (Tamra) Hoeschen of St. Paul, Randy (Karen) Hoeschen of St. Louis Park, Steven (Sondra) Hoeschen of Sartell, and Michael (Monica) Hoeschen of Bloomington; 16 grandchildren with one on the way and seven great-grandchildren with one on the way; brothers and sisters, Charlene (Jack) Petermeier of Albany, Shirley Uphoff of Melrose, and Judy (Ray “Skip”) Kmitch of St. Cloud.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Thomas Hoeschen; grandson, Shane Meyer; brother, Roger Hoeschen; and sisters, Donna Kerfeld and Lorene Pfau.

Ralph Joseph Marty, 83, of Steamboat Lake near Laporte, MN passed away on Monday, August 6, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Stanchfield.

He was born April 27, 1935 in Grey Eagle, MN to George and Wilhelmina (Frie) Marty.

Ralph attended elementary school at the Burtrum Country School and graduated from the 8th grade at the Nary School near Bemidji. After his schooling he worked at the family farm and cutting wood.

On October 1, 1955 he was united in marriage to Janice Miller at the Presbyterian Church in Bemidji. They lived for a short time in Bemidji. Ralph would move to Osseo where he worked for Couriers Concrete.

Janice and their first-born Robin moved there about a year later. Three daughters joined the family over the next few years. In 1968, Ralph and his brother Donovan started Marty Brothers Excavating Service, working out

and around the twin cities area. They sold the business in 1996 and retired. Ralph and Janice remained in Osseo and Janice passed away on April 30, 2005. After Janice’s death Ralph moved to the cabin on Steamboat Lake near Laporte, MN. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, wintering in Zapata, Texas with his brothers, putzing around in the woods, picking berries, and cooking maple syrup.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, wife Janice, son Robin and brother Jerome. He is survived by his daughters Laurie Buckingham of Cambridge, Melanie Marty of Cambridge, Darcy (Rob) Rylander of Stanchfield, daughter-in-law Linda Marty of Champlin, six grandchildren David (Rose) Buckingham, Michael (Jenni) Buckingham, Matthew Marty, Rachel (Tony) Reynero, Leah Moberg, and Zachary Lockhart, two great granddaughters Laura Buckingham and Olivia Lane, siblings Evelyn, Donnie (Helen), Davie (Sandy), Marvin (Donna), Audrey, and Alquin (Bev), special in-laws Loren (Cleo) Miller, Caren Staples, as well as many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM, Friday, August 10, 2018 with a Sharing Time at 6 PM at the CarlsonLillemoen Funeral Home in Cambridge.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waite Park for Lorraine L. Denne, age 94 of Waite Park who died on Wednesday, Aug. 8. Rev. Timothy Gapinski will officiate and burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery in Grey Eagle. Family and friends may call from 4-8 PM on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the Williams Dingmann Funeral Home, St. Cloud and one hour prior to the services Tuesday at the church in Waite Park. St. Joseph’s parish prayers will be at 5 PM Monday evening at the funeral home.

Lorraine was born October 9, 1923 in Grey Eagle to Edward and Vivian (Walker) Rohde. She married Robert H. Denne on November 27, 1941 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Grey Eagle. Lorraine was employed in production at X-Cel Optical in Sauk Rapids for many years until retiring.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic

church in Waite Park. Lorraine loved being at her cabin and spending time with her family. She enjoyed the outdoors, going fishing and bird watching.

She is survived by her children, Neil of Las Vegas, NV, Jim (Peggy) of Richmond and Dianne Dorn of Waite Park; sisters and brother; June Waldvogel of Grey Eagle, Linda Rohde of Grey Eagle, Gerald (Luetta) Rohde of Burtrum and Harold (Pat) Rohde of Grey Eagle; 8 grandchildren; 9 greatgrandchildren and 4 great-great grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert (1996); sisters, Vera Denne, Virginia Denne, LaVerna Rohde and brothers, David Rohde, Glen Rohde, Frederick Rohde, James Rohde and Myron Rhode; son-in-law, Douglas Dorn and great-great granddaughter, Kylie Dorn.

Services celebrating the life of Ellsworth Barnes Jr., age 80 of Albany, was held Tuesday, August 7 at the Miller-Carlin Funeral Home Chapel in Albany.

Pastor Steven Olson officiated, burial was in the Our Saviors Cemetery.

Ellsworth died at his home on

Lawrence Drevlow

Lawrence Drevlow, 90 of Long Prairie died Monday, August 6, 2018, at CentraCare Health in Long Prairie. The funeral for Lawrence will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 10, 2018 at the American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie. Friends may begin calling one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

Lawrence was born in Little Sauk Township November 18, 1927 to John and Alvina (Mueller) Drevlow. He lived on the family farm until 1947 when he and his brother, Ernest built the Drevlow Repair Shop. On

and entered the U.S. Navy in 1955. He married Bertha McCombs on July 20, 1957 in Inkster, MI. The couple lived near Long Beach, California for over 50 years. Ellsworth worked in the assembly area of McDonnell Douglas for 33 years, retiring June 23, 1993. The couple moved to Albany in 1997. Ellsworth is a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and he is Past President of ANVETS in California.

Ellsworth is survived by his wife, Bertha, Albany; his children, Cathey Rodriquez, Albany; Connie Roche, Bakersfield, CA and Lonnie Barnes, Albany. He is also survived by his brother, Chuck (Cheryl) Barnes, Holdingford, 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his son, Ronnie Barnes; his sisters, Lois Horner and Caroline Thatcher and a brother, Jonathon Barnes.

June 21, 1950 he married Beverly (Peggy) Shinabarger and in December of that year he joined the U.S. Army. Lawrence was honorably discharged in May 1952 and he returned to Long Prairie and ran the shop until 1994 when he and Peggy built and managed the Long Prairie Super 8 Motel. Lawrence retired in 1999 but soon started Larry’s Stained Glass and created many beautiful pieces. Larry enjoyed bowling, stained glass, socializing and traveling.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Peggy, children Lauren (Nancy) Drevlow, Ann (Bradley) Gulstad, Kathi (Terry) Johnson, 11 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and sonin-law Larry Ebert.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Alvina, son Mark, daughter Carol, granddaughter Stephanie O’Roarke, great grandson Carter Gordon Mitchell, siblings Alvin, Richard, Louis, Gertrude, Ewald, Johanna, Wilma and Ernest.

Florence L. Westerberg F u n e r a l services were held Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Long Prairie for Florence Westerberg who died Friday at the Long Prairie Hospital. The Rev. Paul Twist and Rev. Matt Stacey officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Long Prairie.

Florence was born July 9, 1924 in Little Falls to Ferris and Bessie (Elshire) Hardin.

She married Ralph A. Westerberg on January 25, 1947 in Long Prairie and she has lived her entire married life in Long Prairie. She worked as a bookkeeper for her husband at Long Prairie Plumbing and Heating and also worked in the bakery and deli at Holiday.

She is a member of First Baptist Church in Long Prairie.

Survivors include her children, Ralph (Betty) of Romana, CA; Roger of Nimrod, Patty (Randy) Anderson of Alexandria; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her sister, Betty Schuster of North St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Charlie, brother, Lloyd Hardin and sister, Gladys Rahn.

Richard “Dick” P. Manlove F u n e r a l services were held Monday, August 6, 2018 at American Lutheran Church in Long Prairie for Richard Perry Manlove who died Tuesday, July 31 at CentraCare Hospital in St. Cloud.

Pastor Bill Bakewicz officiated. Burial was in Hubbard, MN. Dick was born on his father’s birthday, February 17, 1931, at home in Hubbard Township, the second child to Clinton Clair and Minnie Rebekah (Christensen) Manlove. He attended the Hubbard School through eighth grade, graduating in 1948 from Park Rapids High School. He worked on the family farm and drove school bus for Park Rapids until 1952, when he was drafted on February 27th, during the Korean conflict, into the United States Army. He spent 18 months overseas in Germany, receiving his discharge on February 16, 1954. In the fall of 1954, he began college at Bemidji State University graduating in 1957 with a B.S. degree in Industrial Arts Education. He later returned to complete a master’s degree. He started his teaching career at Deer Creek, MN in 1957. He moved to Long Prairie, MN in 1965 where he taught for 32 years of the 40 years he was in education, retiring on June 1, 1997.

Dick met his wife, also a teacher, at Long Prairie. He married JoAnn Carol Oak on August 2, 1969 in McIntosh, MN. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter Jill Elizabeth and a son Jason Perry. Becoming grandfather to Jackson Perry and Jenna Kathryn Grace was a huge thrill.

dad spent many Sunday afternoons playing baseball with his sons. Dick played a lot of baseball during his Deer Creek days.

He enjoyed watching the MN Twins and especially the MN Vikings. He officiated HS basketball and was “Keeper of the Clock” for Long Prairie athletics for 40 years, continuing into retirement. He bowled for 40 years in Wadena with Deer Creek friends & also teams in Long Prairie.

Dick enjoyed many fishing trips to Lake of the Woods and Canada. Fall brought deer hunting on his property near Ponsford, MN. The family enjoyed travelling all over the United States in their RV during the summers. Dick had been to all 50 states having driven in 49 of them. Spending time with family at their cabin on Long Lake in Hubbard held many memories. Dick loved working with wood and doing construction projects. Together, Dick and JoAnn built their home, garages, and cabin. He will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, strong work ethic, organizational skills, promptness, and doing the job right the first time.

In retirement, Dick drove the Todd County Veterans van for 10 years and did bread runs for the LP Food Pantry. He was a life member of the Wadena VFW and a 60year member of the Long Prairie American Legion. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, JoAnn; daughter Jill of Alexandria; son Jason (Joelle) of Valley City, ND; grandchildren, Jackson and Jenna; sister in law, Gail Manlove, brothers in law, Wayne (Jan) Oak, Gene (Judy) Oak and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Kathryn Manlove, brothers, Winston (Margaret) Manlove, Paul Manlove, brother in law, Larry Oak and mother and father in law, Johnnie & Adeline Oak.

This whole event is a lesson on discipleship. Jesus shows the disciples how to follow him in good times and bad. The disciples just returned from their preaching and teaching journeys. They are tired and worn out, they want to decompress and relax and yet they had no leisure to even eat. So Jesus takes them to a desolate place with a plan to get some peace and quiet but that doesn’t happen. Discipleship rarely fits neatly into our plans and expectations. What interfered was that Jesus saw a need and he was compelled to filled it. They were like sheep without a shepherd. Good thing Jesus is the Good Shepherd who lays his life down for the sheep.

To be like Jesus, to be his disciples,when we see a need we should have compassion and help. Doing things for people and helping them are very different. Usually people want things done for them. Disciples help them learn and grow.

The disciples notice that it is getting late and they want to disperse the crowds. “You give them something to eat.” Jesus says. You, the disciples, the followers of Jesus, feed them. But we don’t have enough resources. It will take thousands and thousands of dollars to do it. We don’t have that kind of money. Jesus’ answer, “How many loaves do you have?” What do you have? What do we have that can help?

We have our Savior with us in his Word, in the Water in Baptism, in/with/ and under the Bread and Wine in the Lord’s Supper. We have something to give the people. It doesn’t look like much but it will be enough, it is enough. Not just enough but when all is said and done there will be extras. Enough that each disciple can have a whole basket of their own. Enough for ourselves and many more. All this because we live as disci-

by His faithfulness and the fulfillment of His covenant with His children. That was then.

This is now. Years ago God sent His only begotten Son to be born in a manger, live a sinless life, die on a cross and then be resurrected from a borrowed tomb. Once again He made “His salvation known.” This is His love that we can see: it is “love with skin on it.”

If the world cannot see this love, we who are His disciples have only ourselves to blame. All around us are people waiting and wanting to see “love with skin on it.”

Dear Motor Medics, I’m looking at several cars in the two year old range with around 10k miles and after deciding on all the features that I like about each one I think I have come down to two of them and they are both the same model but one has a 4 cylinder engine and the other a six. Both vehicles have automatic transmissions and have very similar features and I would like the best possible fuel mileage so I’m leaning heavily towards the 4 cylinder but I’m not sure if that’s the right choice. Do 4 cylinder model cars always get better mileage than a six cylinder?

Scott in Larchwood, Iowa Dear Scott, You are correct in not assuming that a 4 cylinder car always gets better fuel mileage because they don’t. Often a 4 cylinder car is either too heavy to efficiently pull the load of the car and it lugs trying to move it which lowers the economy, or the car is geared lower than the six so that it can make up for lost power which also cuts down fuel mileage. We suggest that you look at consumer reports and look online for real world fuel mileage reports from folks who have driven the models you are looking at and compare before you buy. You may find the six cylinder is the better choice but not always.

Researching any vehicle you buy is always imperative before making a car buying decision.

They want to replace things like the hood and trunk and a fender with a salvage yard part which matches correctly according to them and on the roof they want to do painless dent repair. -Robbie Dear Robbie, Based on the wording in your question, I can only believe you don’t think the adult child should be “burdened” to provide this assistance.

My guess is you’re talking about one of your own parents. I understand that you might be aggravated with a parent who has been irresponsible with their money. But in my mind, there’s a bigger question. How big is the burden?

I talked to a guy recently who was making $1.5 million a year. He was questioning whether he should help his dad — an older man in poor health, who didn’t handle his money well — by giving him $1,000 a month.

There’s no question you give that guy money. You’re making millions, but you don’t want to help your sick dad?

Come on! But if you bring home $2,000 a month, and your family is barely getting by, you’re not morally required to financially take care of a parent who was irresponsible with their money.

Aug. 4, 2018: At 13:04 received a call of a one vehicle property damage accident that occurred on County 10 west of Highway 71 in Long Prairie TWP. 64 year old Byron Haskell, Long Prairie, was eastbound on County 10 when he went off the road into the ditch on the north side of the road. Byron was not injured and his Dodge SUV received moderate damage to the front end.

Aug. 5, 2018: At 21:04 received a call of an ATV accident on Akela Drive in Kandota Township. Witnesses stated that the driver of the ATV, later identified as Russell Beilke, was traveling south on Akela Drive when he left the roadway and crashed into the trees.

Beilke was transported to the Sauk Centre Hospital then air lifted to the hospital in St. Cloud. Assisting Todd County at the scene were the Minnesota State Patrol, Sauk Centre Police Department, Sauk Centre Fire and Rescue and the Sauk Centre Ambulance. The condition of Beilke’s injuries were unknown. The crash is currently under investigation through the Todd County Sheriffs Office.

-Dave Dear Dave, I’ve going to be debt-free with a full emergency fund in pace by the end of the year. I’m going to get a dog after that, but I wanted to make sure I did it the right way and was in good financial shape before making that move. Is a separate emergency fund for pets a good idea?

-Scott Dear Scott, My wife and I love animals. We’ve had a least one dog the whole time we’ve been married. Still, I think a full emergency fund of three to six months of expenses will cover you and your pet.

You go through some expense as a pet owner, along with happy, wonderful times and heartbreaking things, too. We lost our Golden Retriever recently, and I can tell you that was really hard on everyone. You love them like they’re family, but you still have to use common sense sometimes, and remember that they’re animals and not human beings.

Part of that includes spending reasonable amounts of money on them — and in some unfortunate cases — doing things with the animal’s best interest, not our own desires, in mind.

What is a reasonable amount?

That depends on how stable you are financially. It’s really a ratio question of expense to means. But no, I wouldn’t recommend a second emergency fund just for pets.

Swanville City July 10, 2018 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. The meeting called to order 7:00 p.m.with the following members present: Sandy Lange, Jim Molitor, Norm Carlson and Tony Maciej. Absent: Deb Wood Also present: Jon Archer, reporter Sheila McCoy, and Lonny Hutchins.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held Tuesday, June 5, 2018 were reviewed.

A motion was made by Norm Carlson to approve the minutes as printed. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasure’s report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Norm Carlson to approve the treasurer’s report. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Jon Archer, from Schlenner Wenner & Co, was present to go over the yearly audit. Jon explained the audit in detail and answered questions from council members. Archer advised council that raising water, sewer, refuse and recycling rates would be a good plan with the growing operating costs. Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the audit as presented. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Water, sewer, refuse and recycling rates were looked over and discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to raise each rate 3% on August 1, 2018. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Council agreed water turn offs will occur as notified in a delinquent letter sent to the resident according to water policy. No partial payments on an overdue account, must be

Swan River clean up is now complete. Mayor Lange said that a land use lease agreement needs to be signed between the City and Loxterkamp Farms and Rainbow Acres. Jim Molitor made a motion to have the Mayor and Clerk sign the agreement. Norm Carlson seconded the motion.

Anderson bill becomes law to address fuel issues As of Aug. 1, people who use straight No. 1 diesel, particularly in very cold weather, are among those benefiting from new law authored by Rep. Paul Anderson, R-Starbuck.

Anderson earlier this year successfully led to enactment a bill (H.F. 3523) which, in part, makes permanent an exemption from the biodiesel blend for No. 1 diesel fuel which was set to expire.

“Straight No. 1 is helpful to truck drivers and farmers who use diesel tractors in the winter time because it can help mitigate problems bitter temperatures have on other forms of diesel fuel,” Anderson said. “This new law should reassure drivers that No. 1 will be available to help them avoid issues during cold snaps.”

The bill also eases the annual transition period for fuel refiners and blenders to make their seasonal switch from one type of biodiesel fuel to another.

sold in Minnesota must contain a certain percentage of biodiesel, a plant-based fuel that can be made from soybeans.

The percentage was set to grow over time as biodiesel production capacity in the state increases and, on May 1 of this year, the percentage of plant-based biodiesel that must be included in No. 2 diesel fuel was increased from 10 percent (B10) to 20 percent (B20).

A lower blend of biodiesel (B5) is to be used from October through March due to concerns over how diesel fuel with the B10/B20 blend performs in cold weather. Anderson said the annual transition is challenging to refiners and blenders and his new law will ease the pressure by now allowing a two-week period – April 1-14 – to ramp up production of B20. A B10 blend must now be reached by April 1, then rise to a B20 blend after April 14.

“The final language that became law didn’t go quite as far as some would have liked, but it was the result of compromise and the leeway that will be provided should help,” Anderson said.

“This change should be an improvement and make for a smoother process.”

Volunteers from across Minnesota are needed on Saturday, August 18 to participate in a statewide search for starry stonewort, Minnesota’s newest aquatic invasive species. Hundreds of volunteers will gather at rendezvous sites statewide to learn how to identify starry stonewort and other aquatic invasive species and search for them in area lakes.

Starry stonewort is an invasive algae that was first found in Lake Koronis in 2015 and has since spread to eleven Minnesota lakes. Early detection of this species is critical for control. By Patricia Seifert, Frustrated Delegate Regardless of which of the two dominant political parties you support or align with in Minnesota, your endorsement process is being spit upon by a large number of candidates this year.

Yes, all the time and expense of the endorsement process means nothing to the candidates who have forced the primaries on us. They don’t think that the people who took the time to become delegates and/or alternates to the various conventions have any idea who would be a good candidate. Most delegates and alternates investigate and question candidates before the various conventions.

Maybe some or most of these candidates did not want to answer the questions of the delegates and alternates.

Classified Ads

The primary will always favor the candidate who has the most money.

Why? Because the more money the more they can pay for advertising on tv, Facebook, Google, Twitter, Messenger, print, etc. And unfortunately, there are many voters who vote for the name they remember, so the more times a candidate’s name is seen or heard the more likely to get a vote.

There are candidates who rely on having the most money and better name recognition than the endorsed candidate.

Most people don’t remember from one year to the next why a particular name sticks in their head when they step into the voting booth.

There is a purpose for the endorsement process.
