You control your emotions -By Harvey Mackay
You are driving to work when suddenly another driver cuts into your lane and nearly clips you. You immediately get mad and it sets you off for the morning. One of your co-workers calls in “sick” - again meaning you will be doing double duty for the third time this month. Your own work is piling up while you try to cover for her. You head to the manager, ready to explode. You have tickets for a ball game you’ve been looking forward to attending with your family, but the dark clouds overhead open up and ruin your plans. Your kids are disappointed, and you curse the weather gods for spoiling your day. Wouldn’t it be great if you could control your emotions and shake these things off, along with all the other things that might happen to you on any given day? It’s natural to be upset when things don’t go according to plan. But all too often, we overreact and start a domino effect that prevents us from seeing the positive side of anything. George Foreman, former heavyweight boxing champ, makes a great
point: “Being angry and resentful of someone is like letting them live rent-free in your head.” Controlling emotions is a challenge for people of all ages. But it can be done! You are the only person directly responsible for your emotions. You are responsible for how you act and react. No one makes you respond in a certain way. “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives,” said American philosopher William James - in the late 1800s, no less. Clearly, the problem has existed for ages. Fortunately, there are some very effective strategies for getting a grip on your emotions. It takes practice, to be sure. But the payoff is unmistakable. And your blood pressure will thank you too. • Practice good self-care. Take care of your own physical, emotional and mental needs. Someone who does this on an ongoing basis will better be able to handle negative emotions - and not become a threat to others. • Identify what anger and frustration feel like - both in your head and in your body. If people are cut off from their feelings, there is a much higher chance that
they will act rashly. • Get out of the stressful situation and take a walk. Take the time you need to process your feelings and emotions.Perhaps it’s enough for you to take a deep breath and count to ten - slowly. • Vent to someone who will listen without judging. • Find a temporary distraction. Engage in an activity that will take your mind off the upsetting subject. • Take action. Think about how the situation could be positively changed, and then encourage steps to help solve the problem. • Communicate your desire for change to others who can help make the change a reality. • Think about “what’s right,” rather Harvey Mackay continued to pg 3

than “what’s wrong.” A gardener ran a business that had been in the family for several generations. For as long as anyone could remember, the current owner and previous generations of owners were extremely positive happy people. Most folk assumed it was because they ran a successful business. In fact it was the other way around. A tradition in the business was that the owner always wore a big lapel badge, saying “Business Is Great!” even though it went through tough times like any other. What never changed, however, were the owner’s attitude and the badge. Everyone who saw the badge for the first time invariably asked, “What’s so great about business?” Sometimes people would also comment that their own business was miserable, or even that they personally were miserable or stressed. The badge always tended to start a conversation, which typically involved the owner talking about lots of positive aspects of business and work. Even the most miserable would usually end up feeling a lot happier after just a couple of minutes listening to all this infectious enthusiasm and positivity. It is tough to measure an attitude like this, but to one extent or another it’s prob-
ably a self-fulfilling prophecy. The business owner freely admitted: “The badge came first. Obituaries Dennis “Pete” V. Kircher D e n n i s “Pete” V. Kircher, 65 year old resident of Burtrum, MN passed away Friday, August 3, 2012 in Todd County, MN as a result of an automobile accident. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville, MN with Rev. Marty Porter officiating. Burial will be at Bearhead Cemetery in Pillsbury, MN. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Military Honors will be conducted by the Swanville American Legion Post #313 and VFW Post #6037. Pete was born September 26, 1946 to Vernon “Shorty” and Betty (Galligan) Kircher near Grey Eagle, MN. He was a 1964 graduate of Swanville High School. On August 20, 1964 he enlisted in the Marine Corps. Pete served 13 months in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1968, after 4 years of active duty. In 1970, Pete started farming with his dad, Shorty, and then took over the family farm. Pete loved his John Deere green. For 30 years he milked cows and continued to crop farm
after that. In 1996, he became manager of the Swanville Co-op Creamery/ Produce. Pete was married to Cindy Schultz on April 2, 1977 in Long Prairie at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Pete was a member of the Valhalla Marine Corps League Detachment 171, and Swanville VFW Post #6037. He enjoyed playing softball, skydiving, deer hunting in Wyoming, elk hunting in Montana. He also had many memories of a safari in South Africa. Pete loved to spend time with family and friends. He lived life to the fullest and always had time to help out anyone that needed it. Pete is survived by loving wife of 35 years, Cindy Kircher of Burtrum, MN; sons, Tom Kircher of Murrieta, CA, Keith Kircher of Prescott, AZ, Nate (Kristine) Kircher of Lakeville, MN; daughter, Shelly Kircher and special friend Simon Waltman of Little Falls, MN; grandchildren, Daniel and Paige of Murrieta, CA, Bradyn and Ivan of Lakeville, MN; brothers, David (Kathy) of Burtrum, MN, Randy (Gretchen) of Owatonna, MN. Jody (Nancy) of Browerville, MN, Brian (Nancy) of Rice, MN; sister-in-law, Mary Kircher of Little Falls, MN; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; Vernon and Betty; brother, John; and sister-in-law, Lynnette. Pallbearers will be Andy Kircher, Chris Kircher, Joey Kircher, Dean Schultz, Jason Schultz and Ben Schultz. Arrangements are with ShelleyGibson Funeral Chapel of Swanville.

Dennis Has Found a Home By Saralee Perel I now understand why new mothers say to their partners, “If you wake the baby, I will kill you.” Last Sunday, my husband, Bob, and I were at an Animal Rescue League. A gal named Alysia put a kitten in my arms. He weighed all of 2 pounds. He purred the second he saw me. Bob and I fell instantly in love with our new family member. We named him Dennis. “He’s so snuggly,” Bob said. “He’ll cuddle all the time.” At home in our bedroom, we let Dennis out of his carrier. I held my arms out so he’d nestle in them. I ask you: What is it about animals who put on a demure, “Please take me home,” act at the shelters, then turn into raucous whirring flying saucers once in their homes? Dennis zoomed past me and flew up every curtain, bookshelf and tall lamp he could find. After his first round, he did it again … and again, at breakneck speeds even a NASCAR driver couldn’t match. Bob can’t catch him and he’s won trophies in sprint competitions. Dennis had clearly been trained in electrical engineering. He shuts down computers with one paw. He turns on printers. He sends faxes. Dennis is … a menace! On the day prior to what we now call D-Day, we emptied our bank account buying every kind of cat toy at PetSmart. Dennis nixed the toys and spent hours jumping in an out of the paper bag they came in. Dennis will not nap. Bob, exhausted, finally corralled the kitten into a huge luxurious crate, at which point Dennis let out a non-stop vocal rendition of July 4th fireworks, and I mean the grand finale when each rapid-fire explosion can be felt throughout our whole bodies and we begin to wonder if our insurance companies cover permanent hearing damage. Each lion-sized roar was accompanied by him banging the metal door, adding the lovely, lilting effect of bombs detonating at split second intervals. Do you know what this ball of light-
ening darts to and then grabs with his sharp teeth if we’re playing in bed and I’m not wearing any top? Well, let me just say I’m sporting 2 Band-Aids. This kitten is no bigger than a sweet potato. But I have to tell you something … he’s even sweeter than one. This morning when I opened my eyes, I watched Bob holding Dennis in his arms. Bob didn’t know I could hear
him softly singing: I’ll love you till the bluebells forget to bloom. I’ll love you till the clover has lost its perfume. I’ll love you till the poets run out of rhyme. Minnesota Holstein Association Field Day to be held August 11 in Grey Eagle
Opening their doors for this year’s Minnesota Holstein Association Field day is Jeff and Korinna Rohde, Rohde Dairy. Registration will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the farm. The Minnesota House released a taxsimulation report recently that shows property taxes payable in 2013 will increase statewide by $153 million. Of that total, about one-third or $56 million, will be assessed on new construction that will appear on the tax roll for the first time. On a statewide average basis, residential homesteads will see a slight decrease of 1.6 percent in property taxes. The rate in the metro area will be slightly higher as property values there are declining at a faster rate than in greater Minnesota. Agricultural land values are projected to increase by 14.2 percent with taxes expected to increase 10.6 percent. Changes in other major property types include an increase of 2.7 percent on
commercial/industrial and 5 percent on apartments. Resident non-homestead property will see a 0.4-percent decrease in taxes, while seasonal-recreation property will see a 0.6-percent decrease. Oral arguments on Secretary of State Mark Ritchie’s changes to the titles of the two constitutional amendments set to appear on the November ballot were heard by the Supreme Court last week. A decision by the Court could be released yet this month. With FEMA working to finish up its damage estimates from severe flooding earlier this summer in parts of Minnesota, a special session of the Legislature will be called by Gov. Dayton later this month. We Minnesotans certainly do talk about the weather. And most of it is negative, such as being “too hot” or “too cold,” or “too dry” or “too wet.” However, conditions Saturday and Sunday were just about perfect as hot weather was ushered out of the state by refreshing northwest breezes. A storm system pushed across the state Friday evening,

dropping much-needed rain over most of the region along with high winds that unfortunately caused some crop and property damage. The city of Albany had its big parade Saturday evening, and conditions were very comfortable for the large crowd lining the streets. Greenwald hosted its annual “Barley Days” celebration Saturday and Sunday, and one couldn’t have ordered more perfect weather for the parade Sunday morning. Sunny skies, moderate temps, and just the right breeze made for a beautiful day. We also took in the parade at Forada Saturday morning, so it made for a busy weekend. Civic celebrations continue throughout the area even though back-to-school and football seasons are rapidly approaching. Belgrade hosts its parade and celebration this weekend, with festivities also set for Garfield. Starbuck’s big Dragon Boat Festival is also scheduled for this weekend on Lake Minnewaska. Rep. Upsala Community Education presents PFCT’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre and Upsala Community Education presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Walk-in registration will be held on August 13, 1-2:00 pm in the Upsala Area School Commons. Auditions start promptly 2:00 p.m. following registration. Up to 70 local young people are needed to play the roles of Buck, Luck, Yuck-Yuck, and the rest of the Groundlings; Titania, Oberon, Pease Blossom, Cobweb,Moth, Mustardseed, and the rest of the Sprites; Quince, Flute, Starveling, Snout,Snug, and the Understudies of the acting troupe, The Duke, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, Helena, and the rest of the Noblemen and Noblewomen. Two professional actors/directors from Prairie Fire Children’s Theatre’s staff will direct the production and play the roles of the mischievous sprite, Puck and the colorful Nick Bottom. The week long program is open to anyone age 7 - 12th grade. Auditions

Albany Library closing August 18 for renovation The Albany Public Library is planning to close for one week in order to complete renovations. The last day the library will be open prior to the renovation is Saturday, Aug. 18. The library will be closed the following week and reopen on Monday, Aug. 27. Renovations at the library include painting and new carpets. The shelving system will be rearranged and new units added so that more books and other items can be kept on hand. In addition, the circulation desk is being remodeled to provide for a more efficient workspace. No items checked out from the Albany Public Library will be due back during the week of closure. Heritage Days celebration planned in Burtrum August 25-26 Plans are in full swing as members of the Central Minnesota Heritage Club of Burtrum prepare for their annual “Heritage Days” celebration on August 25th and 26th. This event, which began in 2008, is held on the club grounds, ¼ mile northwest of Burtrum on County Road 13. Featured both days will be saw mills, threshing, flea market, gas engine displays, sawing contest, tractor games, concessions and a beer garden, car and tractor shows and a pedal tractor pull for kids up to age 9. Saturday will also feature an ATV and garden tractor pull beginning at 4:30 p.m. In addition to all the other activities, Sunday will also feature a church service at 10 a.m. Exhibitors

Lane closures planned on five highways in Little Falls, Brainerd, Motley and Upsala Motorists will encounter delays and intermittent lane closures on five area highways beginning Aug. 15 while crews resurface segments of each roadway. The schedule is: • Aug. 20-24: Both directions of Highway 371 between Crow Wing County Road 27 (the entrance to Crow Wing State Park) and Highway 210 in Baxter will be reduced intermittently to a single lane as crews resurface shoulders. The same segment of Highway 371 again will be reduced intermittently to a single lane Sept. 6-14 when crews resurface the driving lanes. • Aug. 20-23: Highway 27 between 127th Avenue and 9th Street Northeast in Little Falls intermittently will reduce to a single lane with flaggers controlling traffic beginning at 7 p.m. daily. All lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. the following day. • Aug. 24-28: Highway 238 between Walnut Avenue and 3rd Avenue in Upsala

In addition to this celebration, the club members continue to do the lawn maintenance on the 2 acre cemetery on the east side of Buck Lake. The land was originally deeded to an area church in 1902 and some of the original tombstones show burial dates in 1897. Through the years as churches dissolved or merged and the Moses Dane Cemetery was started, the old cemetery was not maintained and become overgrown with brush. The club began in 2008 according to Wes Klaahsen, club president, and has approximately 40 members that come from the local area as well as members from Pillager, Melrose, Little Falls, St. Cloud area and Royalton.
