The world is but a canvas to our imagination -By Harvey Mackay Walt Disney was a giant in the world of imagination.

On Saturdays, Disney took his daughters to a local park to ride the merry-goround and play.

While sitting on a bench watching his children enjoy their rides, Disney imagined an elaborate family park filled with happy people. He put every detail into place – from the pirates of the Caribbean to Main Street USA. This pioneer of family amusement had no similar facilities to draw ideas from. He relied on his imagination.

Now, one particularly descriptive job title at Disney is “imagineer.”

Imagineering is the research and development arm of The Walt Disney Company, responsible for the creation, design and construction of Disney theme parks and attractions worldwide.

They are illustrators, architects, engineers, lighting designers, show writers and graphic designers. They

make the magic happen.

An article in “Bits & Pieces” claims each of us possesses a secret superpower that we can’t use enough.

Let your subconscious mind help you exercise your imagination. Try this technique used by Thomas Edison: Ten minutes before you go to sleep, organize your thoughts. Think about a problem you’re trying to solve, or ask your brain a question. Keep thinking about this as you drift off to dreamland.

Then, during the first 10 minutes after waking up, write down whatever pops into your head. You’ll often find that your brain has answered your question during your sleep. In the morning your mind is looser, and you’re more likely to remember dreams and connect them to your daytime reality.

The Internet Age has opened a world of opportunities that showcase imagination. One of my favorite examples is Snapchat, the app that brought photo sharing forward into the modern age and brought back a real interest in communicating through photos, CAIL.com explains.

“The Good Old Days” -By Tom Kuehne Early Hay Making When the first pioneers moved to this area, building a house was the first task they encountered.

The building process not only resulted in a building for heat and shelter, but it also required tree cutting, which ultimately resulted in small fields for cultivation. As a barn or granary was needed, more trees were cut and more areas were cleared of trees and more fields were created. Today we are accustomed to seeing fields of 100 acres, but the original farms were only about 40 acres in size and a field was maybe 1 acre in size.

The first farm animals were a team of horses to help with the heavy farm work. A cow was needed to supply milk and create an ultimate meat supply.

Chickens were added to supply meat and eggs. Pigs appeared last. They were able to eat roots and acorns during the summer months, but required corn for their diet in winter and corn needed more cultivation to produce a crop.

The cows and horses were fed over the winter with hay. This feed usually consisted of various grasses and weeds cut and dried during the summer months and stored near the buildings in a pile referred to as a stack. If the stack was constructed properly, the rain would run off of the pile leaving the interior dry, thereby avoiding spoilage.

The hay making process was very long and labor intensive. Originally, there were no sickle mowers and the hay was cut with a scythe. This tool consisted of a 3 foot curved blade attached to a curved handle with hand grips on the handle. The blade was extremely sharp and kept sharp by occasional stroking with a whet stone. The scythe required a swinging motion of the operator. A good day of cutting with the scythe would maybe cut about 1/3 of an acre.

After the hay had been left to dry for a couple of days, it was raked into piles or shocks. The raking was done with a hay rake. A hay rake was a wooden handle attached to a 4 foot wooden cross piece.

This wooden cross piece had wooden pegs extending from it’s bottom, which gathered the hay with a raking process.

The cross piece was made stronger by two metal strips, which were attached to the handle on one end and attached to the ends of the crosspiece with the other end. The wood used for the rake was usually poplar, due to it’s lighter weight.

The wooden pegs were made of white oak for durability.

The forks for loading the hay in wagons were sometimes made of wood.

Metal worked better, but wood was more easily available.

A large hay stack and a good sized wood pile showed that one was ready for the upcoming winter.

founded Snapchat were successful because they incorporated the social element and added ways to edit the pictures and add things to them that were even more fun for their audience.

They made it interactive, and found a way to make it temporary (so the evidence disappears!)

Even if you don’t think of yourself as the creative type, you can always amp your imagination up with a little effort. Here are some strategies I like to try when I’m searching for an original idea or an innovative solution: Meditate. Spend some time each day visualizing something pleasant and peaceful. It doesn’t have to relate to anything you’re working on – just picture a lake, a forest or even a loved one. You’ll relax your brain and body while creating a mental environment that makes way for fresh thinking.

Another brain stimulator for me is exercise.

Pretend. Look at ordinary objects around you and pretend they’re something different. Challenge your mind to look at things from a new perspective. Turn them upside down or sideways and see what they morph into.

It’s that time of year when many Minnesota families start back to school shopping. With a little planning, parents who save receipts for school supply purchases may claim valuable K-12 tax benefits on their Minnesota income tax return.

“Every year, parents across Minnesota invest in their children’s education by purchasing school supplies,” said Revenue Commissioner Cynthia Bauerly. “Parents should keep receipts for these purchases and claim the K-12 Education Credit or Subtraction to help save money when it comes time to file taxes.”

Two tax benefits can help Minnesota families pay expenses related to their child’s education: the refundable K-12 Education Credit (income limits apply) and the K-12 Education Subtraction (no income limits).

Last year, more than 33,000 families received the K-12 Education Credit, saving an average of $244. Over 178,000 families received the K-12 Education Subtraction last year.

These programs reduce the tax parents pay and could deliver a larger refund when filing a Minnesota income tax return. To qualify, the purchases must be for educational services or required materials.

The child must be attending kinder-

garten through 12th grade at a public, private, or home school and meet other qualifications.

Save those receipts Remember to save your receipts to claim the credit or subtraction. Visit the Revenue booth at the Minnesota State Fair in the Education Building to get special envelopes for your school supply receipts.

Most expenses for educational instruction or materials qualify, including: • Paper • Pens and notebooks • Textbooks • Rental or purchases of educational equipment such as musical instruments • Computer hardware and educational software • After-school tutoring and educational summer camps taught by a qualified instructor Taxpayers who are not required to file an income tax return must do so in order to claim a refund for any eligible education credit.

K-12 Education Subtraction There are no income limits to qualify for the education subtraction. Most parents qualify. Parents can claim the K-12 Subtraction for tuition paid to private schools or college courses used to satisfy high school graduation requirements.

Obituaries Jesse Baggenstoss

J e s s e Baggenstoss, 26 year old resident of Sartell, MN died Saturday, August 3rd at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 10th at 11:00 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Gary Hendrickson officiating. The burial will be held at the Elmdale Lutheran Cemetery in Elmdale, MN. A visitation will be held from 4:008:00 P.M. on Friday, August 9th and from 10:00-11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 10th, all at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls.

Jesse Ray Baggenstoss was born on January 5, 1993, in Dallas, TX to Jolie Baggenstoss. He was baptized in April of 1993 at the Elmdale Lutheran Church in Elmdale, and confirmed on May 20, 2007,

at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls.

Jesse grew up in Royalton, MN, where he graduated with the class of 2011. He will be remembered as a boy who loved his mom, adored his sister, and was a hard worker.

Jesse was always willing to lend a helping hand, especially to his grandparents, Dave and Benita, on the farm. He was employed most recently with Valley Cartage in St. Joseph, MN, as a Nighttime Platform Associate. He also worked for Unique Movers in Sartell, MN, which gave him the opportunity to experience new adventures across the United States. Jesse loved to travel, visiting well over 30 states. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, watching dirt track racing, and spending time with family and friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Jolie (Jay) Gombos of Rice, MN; siblings, Isabella Czeck, Jordan Gombos of Rice, and Jamie Gombos of St. Stephen, MN; grandparents, David and Benita Baggenstoss of Elmdale; uncles Jeff Baggenstoss and Jay Baggenstoss of Elmdale, aunt Sara (Nicole) Baggenstoss of Jacksonville, FL; cousins, Lynsey, Landon, Levi (Jesse’s Godson), and Lara Baggenstoss; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his aunt and Godmother, Sandy Baggenstoss.

Lawrence J. “Larry” Wiechmann age 90 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the Tree of Life Assisted Living in New Munich, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 12 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m.

Sunday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Lawrence Joseph Wiechmann was born May 10, 1929 in Melrose, Minnesota to William and Rose (Austing) Wiechmann.

He attended the country school (Petermeier School) close to home. On August 18, 1959 he was united in marriage to Mary “Mae” Niehaus at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They will be together on their 60th wedding anniversary as Mae just passed away on May 17, 2019. Together they farmed and raised four children on

Sheldon L. Budde

Sheldon L. Budde, age 80 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m. Thursday, August 8 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Melrose following the Mass.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church in Meire Grove.

Sheldon Lawrence Budde was born November 23, 1938 in Freeport, Minnesota to Lawrence and Helen (Rose) Budde. After high school, he served in the US Navy for four years. Sheldon married Joan Lizotte on October 20, 1962 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. He worked at Gebeke Transport and Loxtercamp Transport, both of Melrose. Sheldon then owned and operated Budde Decorating in Melrose until retirement.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose, Melrose Lions, and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. Sheldon served on the Melrose Fire Department for 25 years, being Chief and on the State Fire Board during that time. He also served on the City Council and St. Mary’s School Board.

Sheldon enjoyed fishing and deer hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Budde of Melrose; children, Paul (Penny) Budde of Phoenix, AZ, Gary Budde of Albuquerque, NM, Jodi Budde of Waverly, Tom (Kathy)

the Wiechmann family farm northeast of Melrose. After retiring from farming in 1990, Larry and Mae built a home in Melrose.

Larry loved to fish, play cards, go to the Niehaus Family cabin on Big Birch Lake, and spend time with family, especially the grandchildren. He was very proud to be great grandpa to little Angela Mae. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose.

Survivors include his son, Tom (Joanne) Wiechmann of Melrose; daughters, Mary Jo Katz of Bemidji and Karen (Greg) Hoppe of Big Lake, Alaska; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; sisters, Clarice (Julius) Massman, of Osakis, Carol Pohlmann of Melrose, and Margie Stroeing of Freeport; and brother-in-law, Al Schaefer of New Munich.

Larry was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Wiechmann; parents, Bill and Rose Wiechmann; infant son, Gary Wiechmann; son, John Wiechmann; brother, Ervin Wiechmann; sisters, Florentine (Jerry) Korf and Lorraine Schaefer.

Larry spent his last two months at the Tree of Life Assisted Living Center where he endeared himself to all.

Serving as casket bearers will be Adam, Aaron, and Evan Wiechmann, and Samuel, Jared, and Elijah Katz.

Denis H. Marthaler

Denis H. Marthaler, age 82 of Melrose, died peacefully on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, August 7 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment was in the parish cemetery.

Denis Herman Marthaler was born May 23, 1937 in Greenwald, Minnesota to Alphonse and Dorothy (Imdieke) Marthaler.

He attended grade school in Meire Grove and graduated from Melrose High School.

After high school Denis joined the US Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He worked as

a mechanic at A.M. Maus and Sons from 1960 to 1966 and then moved to the cities and worked at Len’s Standard until his retirement.

Denis was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove.

He enjoyed trapshooting, bowling, and any type of mechanic work.

Survivors include his brother and sisters, Melvin (Lucille) Marthaler of Cold Spring, Dorothy Lembeck of Spring Hill, Clarine Stalberger of Meire Grove, and Janice (Will) Kalstrom of St. Cloud; and 15 nieces and nephews.

Denis was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, LaVina Walz; brothersin-law, Cyril Stalberger, Allen Lembeck, and Lindy Walz; and nephew, John Walz.

Serving as urn bearer was Chuck Froehling. Cross bearer was Barb Froehling and scripture bearer was Mary Braun. Gift bearers were Ralph and Rosie Inderrieden.

Readers were Mary Marthaler and Jackie Dahl. Eucharistic Minister was Veronica Inderrieden.

Victor “Vic” J. Bromenschenkel

M a s s of Christian Burial was held We d n e s d a y, August 7, 2019, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna, for Victor “Vic” J. Bromenschenkel, age 93, of Avon.

Vic passed away July 31, 2019 at St. Benedict’s Senior Community in St. Cloud. Reverend Gregory Mastey officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery with full military honors.

Vic was born May 12, 1926 in St. Cloud to Alfred and Loretta (Feddema) Bromenschenkel. He graduated from St. Cloud Cathedral in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during both WWII and the Korean War. Between his military service he attended business college in St. Cloud.

He married Mary Ellen Hood on October 16, 1954 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell. He worked as a Letter Carrier for

the U.S. Post office in St. Cloud. He also dairy farmed in the Avon area for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Gold Wing Motorcycle Club in St. Cloud, riding with them until age 91. He was also a member of the VFW Post 428, American Legion Post 428 and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Anna.

Vic is survived by his son Randy (Jennifer) of Payson, AZ, daughter Lisa Donlin of Duluth, MN grandchildren Nakitta, Tanner, Tommy, Luke, Sarah and Jacob, great grandson Calum, sisters Rita Rassier of St. Joseph, Jeanie Heltemes of White Bear Lake, and Phyllis Thielman of Avon, and brothers Gib of Fargo, Leo of Mankato, and Jim of Minneapolis.

Vic is preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary Ellen (2011), son Ronnie, sisters Betty Traut, Edwina Ross and brothers Kenneth and Roger and one infant brother.

Jack is survived by his wife, of almost 60 years, Rosie; daughters, Nancy (Gene) Kalthoff of Albany, Mary (Ron Mumm) Shaver of St. Cloud; and his grandchildren, Krista, Alyssa, Clint, and Cassie; and great grandchildren; Ace and Lincoln. Also surviving are his brothers Norman of Des Moines, IA, and Paul of Swanville.

J o h n “Jack” George Zimmerman, age 87, of Albany, died Thursday, August 1, 2019 at the St Cloud Hospital. Mass of Christian burial service was held Tuesday, August 6th at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany.

Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at a later date.

Jack was born on June 18th, 1932 to Ferd and Zita (Klein) Zimmerman in Albany, MN. He graduated from Albany High School in 1950 and attended the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. Jack served in the US Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller. On July 2nd, 1960 he was united in marriage to Rosemary M. Buerman at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Farming.

The couple made their home in Albany where he owned and operated Jack’s TV Repair for over 35 years. Jack enjoyed

The Upsala/Swanville Legion post 313/350 took home the honors of the JR. Division II Northwest Substate Runner-Up. The Patriots opened up with the first two rounds of playoffs being held in Breckenridge July 22-23. Patriots fell to Aitkin in a close one 3-2 on the opening day. They returned to Breckenridge to face DGF, defeating them 13-6. The Patriots then had to face Parkers Prairie winning in 5 innings 12-1. The championshig game was held on July 29th in Parkers Prairie. The Partiots had to face Aitkin for a second time. The game ended in a close 4-3 loss. The Patriots had an outstanding season of JR. Legion with a regular season record of 8-3-1 and in playoffs a record of 2-2. Dear Motor Medics, I’m having trouble listening to your car show.

It’s not so much you guys but rather my car. If I listen at home or in my friend’s car it’s loud and clear but I just can’t seem to get good reception on my vehicle radio. The truck has only 60,000 miles and is a 03 Chevy.

I started getting poor reception a few years ago and it has become worse. The FM reception is poor and the AM is very poor. It has kind of a popping sound that changes speed of pops as the engine changes speed. Where would I begin to fix this problem myself?

-Scott in Clayton, New Mexico Dear Scott, It could be many things that won’t be too hard to fix if you have some basic mechanical skills. It could also be the entire radio but let’s start with checking the cheaper stuff first. A radio is only as good as its antenna so start there. Check the mast and the mounting. The antenna should be tight where it mounts to the vehicle. Check the cable as well. The cable needs to have no corrosion at any connector joint from the antenna to the radio. If all looks good try a test antenna that is not mounted to the vehicle. If it fixes the problem it is likely the antenna.

If not then it is time to have some diagnostics done at the local radio repair shop.

Heavy gauge jumper cables with large ends are good for jumping a car quickly and often. A rechargeable jump pack also works well for this. The difference is you need to get close with your vehicle to connect cables while the pack is self-contained. Very small gauge cables need more time to charge before cranking and the one for the lighter to lighter socket can take a very long time and not provide the needed cranking amperage.

Burnhamville Township June 25, 2019 The regular meeting of the Town Board of Burnhamville was held June 25, 2019 at the Burtrum Community Center. The meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m.

by Chair Mike Berscheit. Members present include Supervisors: Bruce Johnson, Mike Berscheit and Joe Muellner; Clerk Shirley Hulinsky; Treasurer Pam Throener. Jean Gustafson, Marlene Clark and Erv Herdering was also present.

The minutes from the regular meeting of May 28, 2019 were approved as presented on a motion

by Sup. Johnson. Motion was seconded by Sup. Berscheit. Motion passed.

For correspondence the township board members received letters about planning and zoning, board of adjustment, Swanville fire board and state household estimate. The board had no complaint on the planning and zoning request. The Swanville fire board had a meeting to discuss the building roof repair.

The township lawyer was present to discuss abandoned house in Pillsbury. The neighbors complained of rats on that property and lowered property value.

The attorney suggested we adopt an ordinance. She discussed steps needed to improve or remove the problem house. Sup. Berscheit made a motion to hold a special hearing at 6:30 on July 30 to discuss the proposed nuisance ordinance. Sup. Johnson seconded the motion. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to pay all bills numbered 5770 through 5782: Rev. $706.65; R & B $39,909.89; Fire. $11.18. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion. Motion passed.

In the road report the dust control has to be done at intersections and south of town where more gravel needed to be added and worked in. The contractor had to clear debris from culvert on 168th street again. The township was divided up between the supervisors to do weed inspection.

Ditch mowing bids were opened.

Sup. Johnson made a motion to accept the low bid from KB Specialties/Mike Berscheit. Sup. Muellner seconded the motion.

Motion passed with Sup. Berscheit abstaining.

A land owner of Dogwood Loop requested a speed zone by the lake homes there. Sup. Johnson viewed the area and agreed.

Since it meets the requirement for a rural residential area Sup. Johnson made a motion to adopt resolution 2019-1 setting the 35 MPH speed limit zone on Dogwood Loop. Sup. Berscheit seconded the motion. With all voting in favor, motion passed.

Treasurer’s report showed a balance of $141,984.53. Treasurer’s report was approved by Sup. Berscheit and seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed.

A motion was made by Sup. Berscheit to adjourn the meeting which was seconded by Sup. Muellner. Motion passed. Meeting was adjourned at 8:07 p.m.

After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the audit as presented. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The cult e sac on North Berkey Avenue was discussed. The sand is washing away from heavy rain. It was decided to have Maciej Construction put in catch basins to help with the water run-off. Mayor Lange informed the council the land surveying to the north of the cult e sac should be done by the end of the week.

Mayor Lange presented to the council a letter from the Initiative Foundation requesting the council to consider a contribution for 2020. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to contribute in 2020 - $700.00 to the Initiative Foundation. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Land use permits were presented to council. Planning and Zoning have approved both applications. John Gessell Sr. has applied to build a 30’x40’garage to the north of his property on North Berkey Avenue. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the land use permit for John Gessell Sr. Deb Wood seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried. John and Diane Borgert have applied to redo their cement driveway, walkway and steps by their home. Deb Wood made a motion to approve the land use permit. Norm Carlson seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Quotes for new council chairs were looked at. Council asked the clerk to have two different chairs by next meeting to look over.

Councilmember Carlson reported the roof is leaking in the southwest corner of the Center and the windows are in need of caulking. The city maintenance man will look over both problems and report back to council. The blinds in the center is in need of cleaning.

Council agreed to have Service Master clean the blinds when they come in to wax the floors.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the council were furnished with a listing. Jim Molitor made a motion to approve the claims. Tony Maciej seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 7:00 pm.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by Deb Wood to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Tschida explained the need to replace the Programmable Logic Controller for the computer at the Water Plant. Westrich moved to purchase PLC from Preferred Controls at a cost of $1500.00, 2nd

City Office Report: Stevens reviewed the August Calendar.

Planning Commission: Lange updated the Council on what the Planning & Zoning Commissioners have been working including a sump pump ordinance, have an open house meeting for the community, and home occupation permits.

UCDC: Benson shared the progress of Heritage Days which is set for August 9-11.

Recreation Board: Rec Board Minutes were reviewed. Toning Plus is looking for someone to become the owner operator of the business; they are hoping some younger people would be interested.

7:15 Public Hearing – First Response Team Ordinance Mayor Johnson recessed the regular city council meeting and opened the public hearing at 7:17 pm; a hearing on the City adopting Ordinance 60 - an ordinance regulating the city’s First Response Team.

Comments were heard from the community. Garrett Doucette offered some suggestions that were collated by a handful of First Response Team.

Lange moved to close the public hearing, 2nd by Westrich.

Motion carried unanimously.

Mayor Johnson called the regular City Council meeting back to order.

Unfinished Business First Response Team Ordinance 60: Lange moved to approve the proposed Ordinance 60 and to adopt the Ordinance with the changes as presented, 2nd by Benson. Motion carried unanimously.

Benson moved to add Kyle Breth as Safety Office of the First Response Team effective immediately, 2nd by Lange. Motion carried unanimously.

Crack/Fill/ Pothole Repairs: Johnson stated that Central Minnesota Paving finished filling in the potholes and dug up a section on Olson Boulevard to repair a service line.

Cleaning Up After Horses in Town: Mayor Rollie Johnson explained how frustrating it can be when the dog owners in town take care to clean up their pet’s droppings, but horse riders do not clean up after their horses. It is not the Public Works Department’s responsibility to clean up after the horses make a mess on the City’s streets.

Acknowledgements The Morrison County Sentenced-To-Serve Crew did an incredible job painting the City’s curbs and crosswalks. They are

a great group of people to work with.

Frank Koopmeiners has officially retired as the Full-Time Public Works Director for the City of Upsala. He has worked for the City for over 30 years and we are grateful for his dedication and service to our community for all these years. Here’s why you need a will, and how to get one

By Chris Hogan We all want to do nice things for our loved ones. We go on family trips and celebrate life’s wins together.

It’s sometimes difficult for us to consider the bad things that can happen in life, but we still have to be prepared.

That’s why having a will is so important!

Not having a will in place leaves room for arguments among your loved ones and anyone else who might pop up wanting a piece of your stuff. That’s not okay! The last thing you want to do is add more stress to their lives after you’re gone. This is your legacy we’re talking about here. Do you want to leave that to chance?

Protecting your wealth—and your family—with a will is one of the best gifts you can leave to those you love.

And with August being National Makea-Will Month, there’s no better time to get yours done.

What exactly is a will, and why is it important to have one?

Your grieving family members won’t automatically know what you wanted them to do with your money or your stuff—you need to tell them.

That’s where your will comes in.

A will basically establishes a plan for how your stuff is distributed after you die. It’s your way of saying exactly who gets what and what goes where— and getting it down in writing.

According to a recent survey conducted by Ramsey Research, almost three out of four parents with kids (74%) don’t have a will in place. That’s a big problem!

How do you make a will?

Yanking out a sheet of paper and scribbling “My family gets all my stuff” isn’t going to cut it. But making a will really isn’t that hard. And in most cases, you don’t even need to go to an expensive lawyer to get one done.

Here are seven quick steps that will help you create a will that sticks:

August is Child Support Awareness Month Gov. Tim Walz issued a proclamation declaring August as Child Support Awareness Month, recognizing parents who financially support their children, child support professionals who work with parents to help families be self-sufficient, and a program committed to improving the well-being of children.

In the 2018 Federal Fiscal Year, across 87 counties and 11 tribes, the State of Minnesota collected and disbursed $573 million in child support for 236,000 children, ranking in the top five nationally in percentage of current support collected, and in the percentage of cases with a payment toward past due support.

1. Decide what to include in your will. This includes a list of your savings and investment accounts, plus the paperwork for your home and any other real estate you own. You also might want to include valuable possessions, like jewelry or cars.

2. Select your beneficiaries. Now you’ll get to decide how your stuff is split up and who gets what. Maybe you want half of your assets to go to your surviving spouse while the other half is split evenly between your kids. Whatever it is, get it in writing!

3. Choose an executor for your will. The executor is the person who will read the will and make sure that your wishes explained in the will are carried out.

4. Name guardians for your children. If you have young children, you need to decide who will take care of them after you’re gone.

5. Sign your will in front of witnesses. Don’t forget this step! A written will is not valid unless it’s signed and dated by the one writing the will, notarized by a notary public, and signed by two witnesses.

6. Let everyone know beforehand.

Your will shouldn’t be a mystery novel. Do yourself a favor and read your will to your beneficiaries before you’re gone. Taking away the element of surprise could save a lot of headaches for them later on.

7. Store your will someplace safe.

Make sure you put your will, along with other important documents, someplace that is waterproof, fireproof and accessible for loved ones to find. I personally have a wooden box of folders

Old Age is a Gift

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body - the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging rear. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I don’t agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I’ve aged, I’ve become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I’ve become my own friend. I don’t chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn’t need, but looks so avant garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m, and sleep until noon?

I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 40s, 50s, 60s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love ... I will.

I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set. They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful.

But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten ... and I eventually remember the important things.

Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face.

So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say “no” and mean it. I

As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don’t question myself anymore. I’ve even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.
