• Be more resourceful. Resourcefulness – using your brain to think outside the box and get the information you need or the project accomplished – is one of the traits that I really admire in people.

• Forge strong relationships. People aren’t strangers if you’ve already met them. The trick is to meet them before you need their help. Every person you meet should go into your contact file. A well-developed network is essential for any job.

• Anticipate needs. This includes those of your department and your boss.

Be a reliable source for your supervisor and team and provide solutions. Do research. Study the industry. Follow through and stay available. If you contribute to your supervisor’s success, you will position yourself as a team player and a dependable, valuable employee.

• Delegate to elevate. Delegating is a key management skill. But managers often mistake delegation for passing off work. Failing to effectively delegate wastes your time as well as the company’s time and resources. The most successful managers aim at making themselves unnecessary to their staff.

• Listen to learn. Listening is a critical skill in everyone’s life. If you want to be heard, you must know how to listen. We spend 45 percent of our waking time listening, yet we forget 50 percent of what we hear. Being a good listener can make or break a career.

• Be a better team player. Teamwork is consciously espoused but unwittingly shunned by most people in business because they are afraid that it will render them anonymous or invisible. Nothing could be further from the truth. Working together is critical for success. No one is more important than the team. The key is how to build the team and make it more successful.

• Encourage co-workers. Tell someone that they are stupid or dumb or bad at something and you have destroyed almost every incentive to improve.

However, encourage that person and he or she will work tirelessly to excel.

Encouragement is oxygen to the soul.

Ava weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and measured 20 inches in length.

Corey and Cori Ainali of Sauk Centre are proud to announce the birth of their son, Wyatt Joshua Ainali, born August 1, 2013 at 2:14 a.m. at CentraCare Health-Melrose.

Wyatt weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measured 22 inches in length.

Out of the Blue

On June 13, 1968, at 7:04 p.m., the first recorded F-5 tornado in Minnesota history swept through the small southwestern town of Tracy. The massive tornado destroyed several city blocks, killed nine people and injured more than 100 others.

may not be as good as you tell her she is, but she’ll try harder thereafter and achieve even more.

• Spread enthusiasm around. Encouraging words have tremendous power. Things you hear and read affect your actions. Don’t let others take away your dreams and wishes.

• Reap rewards from volunteering.

People who do volunteer work and help other people on a regular basis have a healthier outlook on life. They are more inclined to be go-getters and consistently report being happier. They also develop new skills like raising money, dealing with rejection, communicating and negotiating.

• Stay humble or stumble. Humility is becoming a lost art in an era of self-promotion and making sure you get all the credit you deserve. Humility is not difficult to practice. It doesn’t involve downplaying your achievements.

It does mean that you realize that others have been involved in your success and you are prepared to be involved in theirs. You start by giving credit where it is due. As humorist Will Rogers said, “Get someone else to blow your horn and the sound will carry twice as far.”

• Always be productive. Arrive to work on time or, better yet, early. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t let work sit on your desk for days on end. Let’s face it …

Obituaries Peter D. “Pete” Jennissen

Peter D. “Pete” Jennissen, age 66, of Sauk Centre, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 14, 2013 surrounded by his family at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Inurnment took place in the parish cemetery.

Peter DuWayne Jennissen was born July 17, 1946 in Melrose, Minnesota to Peter and Doris (Schramel) Jennissen. He married Marlene Lange on February 19, 1966 at the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Francis. They had a dairy farm from 1966 to 1988 and then Pete started his own Shavings Business; hauling wood shavings from his farm to area turkey farms until 2003. After selling the farm

Ione Mary Breth

The Mass of Christian burial celebrating the life of Ione Mary Breth, age 78 of Upsala, was held Tuesday, August 6th, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala.

Father John Odero officiated, burial took place in the parish cemetery following the service. Ione passed away early Saturday morning, August 3, 2013, at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.

Ione was born on February 19th, 1935 in Richmond to John and Eleanor (Ludwig) Braegelmann. She married Reinhard Breth on May 31st, 1955 in Richmond.

She was a nurse’s aide for the St. Cloud Hospital and a homemaker. She and her husband farmed together for over 35 years and raised 10 children. She enjoyed rug weaving. Ione was a member of Saint

in 2003, Pete started a golf cart business selling and servicing golf carts. He enjoyed ice fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, and playing cards over coffee with friends at McDonalds.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and American Legion Post 67.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Jennissen of Sauk Centre; children, Karen Jennissen of Sauk Centre, Donna Roth of Isanti, and Brenda (Brad) Hinrichs of Long Prairie; grandchildren, Ashley Tomsche, Samantha Roth, and Zachary Roth; greatgrandchild, Hayleigh Primus; brothers and sisters; Vie Wiebolt of Brainerd, Elaine (Don) Koester of Arizona, LuVern Bokinskie of Long Prairie, Clifford (Janet) Jennissen of Sauk Centre, Dorothy (Joe) Duevel of Elrosa, and Ray (Denise) Jennissen of Sauk Centre.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Francis “Fran” Jennissen.

Serving as urn bearers were his grandchildren, Ashley Tomsche, Samantha Roth, and Zachary Roth.

Honorary bearer was his great-grandchild, Hayleigh Primus.

Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. She was a Religion Teacher and a Eucharistic Minister she was also a member of the Christian Mothers and Legion Auxiliary in Upsala.

Ione is survived by her loving husband of 58 years Reinhard Breth, Upsala; her children, Mary Breth, Melrose; Sharon (Chuck) Weber, Blaine; Marvin (Bree Heidecker) Breth, Albany; Vernon (Jan) Breth, Holdingford; Val Gill, St. Joseph; Joyce (Ken) Hellermann, Sauk Centre; Lois (Rick) Fischbach, Avon; Denise (Ray) Sieben, Royalton; Dale (Stacy) Breth, Burtrum; Kathy (John) Schleper, St. Joseph ; 27 grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Alfred, Eugene, Ralph and Gerhard; sisters, Theresa Friedrich and Julitta Bromenschenkel.

She is preceded in death by her parents John and Eleanor Braegelmann; brothers, Harold, Wilfred, Eddie, Alvin and John Jr. and sisters, Rosetta, Alverna, Bernadine and Cecillia.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.

Friday, August 9 at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose with Rev. Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.

Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home in Melrose.

Dwight Winton Holmgren was born September 24, 1947 in Upsala, Minnesota

to Herbert and Evelyn Holmgren. On July 8, 1995 he married Rhea Lyon at their home in St. Paul. Dwight worked as an auditor for the state of Minnesota for 35 years and retired in 2008.

Winty enjoyed listening to music, tending his flowers, hunting, fishing, and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Rhea; step-children, Robin (Maynard) Zierden of Freeport and Dan (Dianne Welsh) Ilgen of Pine City; brother and sister, Kenny (Naomi) and Sandra (Jim); his beloved cats, Ginger, Tammy, and Midnight.

Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Beatrice Holmgren.

Serving as casket bearers will be Maynard Zierden, Alex Zierden, Dan Ilgen, and Nick Rosenow.

Arrangements were made with PattonSchad Funeral & Cremation Services of Melrose.

Six Boy Scouts of Melrose Troop 68 attended a week long camping trip at Many Point Scout Camp during July 14-20.

The Scouts began each day at camp by working on merit badges and advancement. During the afternoon they participated in troop activities which would include swimming, shooting sports, sailing, snorkeling, climbing tower, Scoutcraft skills, nature lore, and even engineering.

In the evenings the boys had the run

of the camp as they participated in open program activities. One of the Scouts even spent a night in a treehouse with other Boy Scouts from around Minnesota. All the boys had a great time. They also came home with lots of merit badges.

Attending camp this year were Kyle Douvier, Alex Engelmeyer, Noah Borgerding, Daniel Klassen, Zack Engel, and Adrian Massmann. Adults leaders were Eymard Orth, Peter Orth, and Paul Klassen.

Area student named to Dean’s List Emily Schulzetenberg, daughter of Carl & Kathryn Schulzetenberg of Freeport, was named with High Honors to the spring semester dean’s list at Northwestern Collegein St. Paul, Minn. The dean’s list includes full-time students with a grade point average (GPA) during the semester of 3.65 (out of 4.0) or higher. Schulzetenberg is pursuing a degree in Public Relations at Northwestern.

Highest honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.90-4.0, high honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.75-3.89 and honors are awarded to students with a GPA of 3.65-3.74.

Reconstruction project through downtown continues Motorists traveling Highway 238 through Albany will encounter a new detour and possible delays as Highway 238/Railroad Avenue closed between Fifth Street and Ninth Street Monday, Aug. 5.

A short detour will direct motorists around the work zone.

The closure is part of a project to reconstruct Highway 238/Railroad Avenue through downtown Albany. All businesses in downtown Albany will remain accessible throughout the project.

The project will be complete by November.

Meier Grove Community Band to perform at Music in the Park The Meire Grove Community Band will perform at Music in the Park Series in Staples on Sunday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m.

The Meire Grove Community Band represents a rich history and tradition that once flourished in nearly every Minnesota small town. Located in Stearns County with a population of only 125 people, this small farming community boasts of having the oldest, continuously-performing community band in the entire state of Minnesota. The band was organized in 1883!

The current director is Vern Meyer, who is in his 57th year of wielding the baton. After graduating from St. John’s University, Mr. Meyer served as a high school band director in Bertha-Hewitt and Melrose until the lure of the land and a life style called him back to the family farm.

The members have their family roots in the predominantly German heritage of Meire Grove. The love of music that exists among the band members and in the community, and because talent – and an instrument – seems to have passed on from father or mother to son and/or daughter, sister and /or brother, is an integral reason for the band’s contin-

ued success.

Band membership includes musicians of all ages 12-70 who work together to provide quality band performances.

The music the band performs focuses on traditional American marches, concert band pieces and folk music. For the younger musicians, playing with a mature ensemble expands their music education, sharpens their performance skills and gives them unique experiences to take back to their school bands.

The Music in the Park Concerts are held in the Northern Pacific (NP) Park on Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM and will run through August 18. An Upsala man was arrested after a crash left a Sauk Centre man in serious condition early last Saturday morning.

Christopher T. Lehner was driving his 1997 Pontiac Bonneville north of Freeport when he struck a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix on the driver’s side door, according to a report from the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Grand Prix driver, 30-year-old Joshua J. Ainali of Sauk Centre, was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital. He was listed in serious condition Monday, according to a CentraCare spokeswoman.

Lehner, who is 24, was also taken to St. Cloud Hospital and released. He was later arrested but released Monday afternoon.

Jeremy C. Becker and 27-year-old Cody J. Becker of Grey Eagle, were also injured. Jeremy Becker was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital and was in good condition, according to the spokeswoman.

Cody Becker was taken by ambulance to Melrose Hospital and has since been released.

Both cars were heading east on County Road 37 when Lehner attempted to pass a third vehicle not involved in the crash and struck Ainali as he turned left, according to the report.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, the report said. It happened shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Notes from the Capitol By State Rep. Paul Anderson

A newspaper headline this past week declaring that “property taxes could drop” in Minnesota made for interesting reading.

Although the figure mentioned, $121 million for next year, was only an estimate, my initial reaction was, “Yes, they should go down, because other taxes are going up.”

Keep in mind that property taxes are set by local governments, such as counties, cities and townships, school districts and other local units such as watershed or hospital districts. Members of those governing boards study their individual situations and determine the level of funding necessary to operate their

entity for the coming year. Then they set their levy, and the taxes are collected the following year based on the value of residents’ real property that lies within each taxing entity. Money from the state, mainly in the form of Local Government Aid (LGA), has long been used by cities and counties to help balance their budgets without relying entirely on local property taxes.

With the state facing financially difficult times in recent years, the amount of LGA received by local units of government has gone down. That, however, will be changing next year. Funded by the recently passed $2 billion tax increase at the state level, this state aid will increase by $80 million for cities in Minnesota and by $40 million for counties. Townships are also due for some of this state money as they will receive $10 million annually, starting in 2014.

But that’s not all. Also passed in the recently completed legislative session was an exemption for cities and counties from paying the state sales tax on most purchases. According to figures from the Department of Revenue, that should result in a savings to those local units of approximately $172 million. I carried a bill giving cities and counties that tax break, but I was surprised they received both the large increase in LGA and the sales tax exemption.

will also increase.

So, putting all those pieces together should result in lower property taxes.

But, again, it’s up to local officials to determine what they will do with the increased state funding. Many have actually cut employees or programs in recent years in order to balance their budgets, so it’s going to be interesting to see how they handle this.

Also keep in mind that increases in state spending must be paid for. The sales tax extension on the labor portion of farm and other commercial repairs went into effect July 1. A new fourth tier income tax bracket goes into effect this year, giving Minnesota one of the highest tax rates in the nation. And a new tax on commercial storage is set to go into effect next April, although there is much discussion it will be repealed before it

goes into effect. In addition, several other tax increases, ranging from car rentals to automobile registration, from digital downloads to satellite reception, and some internet sales, will be going into effect.

Fair Season, Harvest, and Taxes

Where does the summer go? I hope you have been able to spend some time with family attending community events. My own family has been blessed to

spend time together and recently my son and I traveled to Guatemala to work with poverty-stricken families. The mission trip reminded me once again of the value of education and family.

The non-partisan Minnesota Management and Budget office released a report recently showing that the all-funds budget from this session will be a truly historic $67 billion dollars, fueled by a 10% increase in spending, over $6 billion in total. Unfortunately, new taxes and laws passed this session mean more

Local Municipality Minutes Swanville City July 2, 2013 Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held in the Swanville Center on Tuesday, July 2, 2013. The meeting called to order 7:30 p.m. with the following members present: Sandy Peterson, AJ Johnson, Jim Molitor, and Tim Grittner.

Also present: Mike Rude, Bryan Allen, Mary Backlund, Brian Zapzalka and reporter Liz Verley.

Minutes of the Swanville City Council meeting held June 4, 2013 were read. AJ Johnson made a motion to accept the minutes as read.

Tim Grittner seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The treasures report was given. A motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by AJ Johnson to approve the treasurer’s report.

Mike Rude, city engineer, presented to the council the bids for the 2013 Rhoda Ave and Water Improvement Project. The city received four bids for the project.

WSN recalculated the bids and found Larson Excavating was the lowest bidder. After questions and comments were discussed, Jim Molitor made a motion approve resolution #130702 which states the City of Swanville will enter in a contract with Larson Excavating for the 2013 Rhoda Avenue and Water System Improvements Project.

Tim Grittner seconded the motion.

All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Bryan Allen, representing Red’s Pub, was present to explain to the council he does not intend to have big bands on the patio every Friday night, but to have music with a couple of guitars. If complaints

occur, Bryan stated, he will work with the council to have the problem worked out.

Council wanted to remind anyone who is interested in renting the park building, music in the park has an 11:00 pm shut down. The reason being the park is in a residential district and not a business. The 11:00 pm music shut down does not apply during the carnival weekend only.

Mary Backlund, city auditor, was present to explain the 2012 city audit. After discussion and questions were answered, Jim Molitor made a motion to accept the 2012 city audit. Tim Grittner seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The city park building break in was discussed. After discussion, Jim Molitor made a motion to have the two remaining windows repaired that were tampered with.

All members voted in favor, motion, carried.

Mayor Peterson presented the council with a letter from the Initiative Foundation asking for a 2014 contribution. After discussion, Tim Grittner made a motion to contribute $600.00 in 2014, which is the same amount as last year. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

Mayor Peterson informed the council that there needs to be a road sign on the corner of Rhoda Avenue and Balcony Road. The city maintenance man will check into getting a sign and putting it up.

The following claims were presented for payment. Members of the Council were furnished with a listing. Tim Grittner made a motion to approve the claims. Jim Molitor seconded the motion. All members voted in favor, motion carried.

The next monthly meeting will be held August 6, 2013, at 7:30 p.m.

There being no further business, a motion was made by Jim Molitor and seconded by AJ Johnson to adjourn. All members voted in favor, motion carried. Meeting adjourned 9:00 p.m.

These historic spending hikes were paid for by more than $2 billion dollars in new taxes and hundreds of millions in fees. Farmers and those of us in Greater Minnesota are going to be the hardest hit by the tax-and-spend free-for-all that went on in Saint Paul.

Many of the new taxes will make it more expensive for farmers to do business. A new maintenance and repair tax that began on July 1st means it now costs more to get your combine, tractor, or other piece of equipment fixed.

The warehousing tax may exempt certain products like soybeans and corn, but farmers will still have to pay more for fertilizer, fuel, and storage of any equipment that passes through a warehouse.

And it doesn’t stop there, non-partisan House research projects that agriculture properties will see a 6.5% increase in their property taxes.

The agriculture industry accounts for about 1 in 5 jobs here in Minneso-

ta. Agriculture is the backbone of our state, and one of the main drivers of our economy. Farmers are the ones that put food on our table and help produce fuel for our vehicles; raising their costs just doesn’t make sense to me.

When you increase costs for farmers, you increase the cost of a gallon of milk, a loaf of bread, or the price of ethanol fuel. That’s a hidden tax that families have been forced to pay as food and gas prices surged during the recession.

While these taxes should have never been proposed in the first place, I’m encouraged that Governor Dayton and some Democrats are already discussing the potential repeal of these harmful taxes next session. I hope that’s something we can come together to do next session.

Finally, with the harvest season upon us, I hope everyone gets a chance to attend the Morrison County Fair Aug. 8-12 or the Todd County Fair Aug. 1418. I will be at both fairs and hope to see you there. I’d love to hear from you and discuss the future of our District!

Some even have an odor.

A: By mid-summer many waterbodies turn green due to the growth of small microscopic plants in the water called algae.

Algae grow in all bodies of water when light and nutrients levels are sufficient.

In many lakes, algae abundance is determined by the amount of phosphorus dissolved in the water. The more phosphorus present, the more abundant algae become and the greener the water gets.

There are many different types of algae. During mid-summer one particular group of algae, called blue-green algae, are often particularly abundant. When this algal group becomes abundant, a strong musty or earthy odor many occur. Algae that have died and are decomposing cause the odor. Because algae abundance strongly depends on the amount of phosphorus

Many years ago, a Georgia farmer had one mule that was particularly stubborn. He would not go anywhere or do anything without a reward.

After much thought and planning, the farmer fastened a pole to the mule’s harness. It extended about one foot beyond the mule’s nose. Motorists will notice an increased number of bicyclists on central Minnesota highways Aug. 15-18 for the annual Bicycling Around Minnesota event.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds all travelers to share the road and follow all traffic safety laws.

Approximately 275 bicyclists will travel through Cold Spring, Albany, Spicer and Hutchinson on several trunk highways, local routes and bicycle paths during the four days.

The law is clear—bicyclists and motorists share responsibility. There are eight “rules of the road” to improve bicycle safety: 1. Bicyclists may ride on all Minnesota roads, except where restricted — such as interstates.

2. Bicyclists should ride on the road and must ride in the same direction as traffic.

3. Motorists must maintain a threefoot clearance at all times when passing a bicyclist.

8:00 am: Upsala 5K Run & Walk Pre-register at www.langoil.com

7:00 pm: Free Country & Gospel Concert Under the Tent in the park. Bring your lawn chair.

Food and refreshments available.

8:00 pm: College Night 2013 at Upsala School Auditorium with free pizza and pop.

All High School & College age students invited.

Check in and same day registration at Upsala School Commons.

9 am - 7 pm: Softball Tournament: at the Rec Building. Food and Beer available.

10:30 am: “The Best Central Mn Small Town” PARADE. Theme Ole and Lena & 130 years of Swedes in Upsala. Parade entries will begin at Gethsemane Lutheran Church with line up at 9:00 AM. There will be prizes for the BEST 3 Theme Floats.

Following the parade, visitors can head to the city park for the city’s “Party in the Park”.

11:30 am: the Borgstrom House will have lunch and tours.

1:00 pm: Presentation by Author Shirley Bergstrom “ Eyes in the Woods” a story of Early Upsala.

1:30 pm: Raffle.

All Day Long: Visitors can enjoy a Car Show, Food Booths, Beer Garden, Cake Wheel, Dunk Tank, Kids Games, Bean Bag Tournament and Big Inflatables and music.

12:30 pm: FFA Kids Pedal Pull.

2:30 pm: - Fire Department Water Fights followed by Kids Water Fights.

7:00 pm: Party at Rec. Building sponsored by UBA. Beer Garden, Concessions.

7:00 - 9:00 pm: Octoball.

7:00 - 8:30 pm Upsala Mn Wheelbarrow Race. Championship race at 8:30 PM. Fireworks 7:30 - 11:30 pm DJ Tina Mandel.

9:00 pm: Upsala Fireman’s Raffle.

10:00 pm: Fabulous Fireworks sponsored by Upsala Legion and Lions.
